Bismarck State College 82nd Commencement Program BSC by Bismarck State College

Created in 1939 in response to a community need for a local college, BSC was originally known as Bismarck Junior College (BJC). The first students started classes on Sept. 4, 1939, on the third floor of Bismarck High School with 107 full- and part-time students and 12 instructors. By the late 1940s, a new location became increasingly urgent as college enrollments soared with GIs returning from the war. In 1951, the North Dakota Legislature responded to an appeal from community leaders to grant the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site. BJC moved into its own building at 900 Boulevard Avenue in 1955. Within a few years, the college had outgrown the Capitol site, and in 1959, Harold Schafer, a local entrepreneur and founder of the successful Gold Seal Company, offered the college land overlooking the Missouri River at the northwest edge of Bismarck. Classes began on the new campus in the fall of 1961 in a single building, Schafer Hall. That windy hill has been transformed over the years with the addition of dozens of buildings and residential halls, countless landscape improvements, the MDU Resources Community Bowl, parking lots, sidewalks, walking paths, and more. The most recent addition, the BSC Health Sciences building, brought a state-of-the-art virtual hospital to campus to train students for healthcare careers. BSC has two satellite campus locations across the river in Mandan. One campus is a training facility for the Mechanical Maintenance Technology Program, and the Lineworker program campus provides an outdoor forest of poles for hands-on learning. Over time, BSC has also developed

satellite education sites in six rural hospitals in North Dakota and Montana to allow nursing and medical laboratory technician students to stay in their community, obtain their degree, and join the workforce in their hometown. After operating as part of Bismarck Public Schools for many years, BJC joined the North Dakota University System in 1984 and changed its name to Bismarck State College in 1987. BSC has always maintained a strong focus on affordability and highquality transfer programs, even as the mission expanded. In 2018, BSC became North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution, expanding its technical program options and enhancing its focus on hands-on learning, industry partnerships, stackable industryinfluenced certificates, and K-12 pathways that lead students to degrees in high-priority occupations. In 2021, BSC unveiled plans for the region’s only polytechnic education center to be built on campus to encourage project-based learning, collaborative work environments, and skill building that will result in workforce-ready graduates. As North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution, BSC is the third largest institution in the North Dakota University System and offers over 100 technical and transfer program options that are flexible, affordable, and accessible. By linking talent with opportunity, BSC builds workforce, drives the economy, and contributes to the strength of the communities we serve at a local, national, and global level.

BISMARCK STATE COLLEGE 2022 COMMENCEMENT

Commencement Speaker ALAN DOHRMANN

Major General Alan Dohrmann was appointed Adjutant General of the North Dakota National Guard by Governor Jack Dalrymple in October 2015. As Adjutant General, Dohrmann commands nearly 4,100 North Dakota Air and Army National Guard men and women, with approximately 1,100 full-time federal and state employees, and oversees state and national missions. He also serves as Director of the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, which is comprised of the Division of Homeland Security and the Division of State Radio Communications. Dohrmann served as North Dakota’s deputy adjutant general for eight years and was responsible for organizational assessment, strategic planning, process enhancement, and the execution of all construction and services contracts for the North Dakota National Guard. Between 2009 and 2010, he served as commanding general of the Multinational Task Force East that supported NATO’s mission in Kosovo. As commanding general, he commanded more than 2,200 soldiers from seven nations and served as the senior U.S. officer responsible for security, force protection and life support for all the assigned forces. His military service began in 1983, when he accepted his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. While on active duty, he was assigned to 1-48 Infantry, Gelnhausen, Germany, as an infantry officer, and the 1st Special Forces Group, Okinawa, Japan, as a signal officer. He left active duty in 1990, joined the North Dakota National Guard and transferred to the Engineer branch. His assignments included operations officer for the 164th RTI; operations officer and executive officer for the 141 Engineer Battalion; staff judge advocate for the North Dakota National Guard; and chief of staff for the North Dakota Joint Force Headquarters. He has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He is a member of the State Bar Association of North Dakota and a life member of the National Guard Association of the United States and the National Guard Association of North Dakota. He serves as a board member of the North Dakota Veterans Home Governing Board, president of the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery Foundation and vice president of the North Dakota National Guard Foundation. Dohrmann lives in Bismarck with his wife, Becky, and their four children.

Student Speaker ABRIELLE SCHANTZ

Abrielle Schantz is graduating with an Associate in Applied Science degree in nursing from Bismarck State College. Upon graduation, she will work as an operating room nurse at CHI St. Alexius in Dickinson, N.D., and plans to continue her education to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. In 2021, Abrielle earned her Practical Nursing certificate from BSC and is currently working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at a local skilled nursing facility, where she cares for elderly residents. While in college, Abrielle visited local high school health classes to give health-related demonstrations and promote the nursing profession to adolescents and young adults. She also collaborated with community agencies on women’s health and hygiene presentations for young women. Abrielle was named to the President’s Honor Roll and participated in intramural volleyball at BSC. She says her favorite classes were the clinical experiences. She loved the hands-on learning, but not so much the paperwork. In her free time, Abrielle enjoys spending time outdoors and at the lake where she loves to fish, go boating and tubing. Originally from Beulah, N.D., Abrielle is the daughter of Rick and Tina Schantz.

NICK HACKER Nick Hacker serves as CEO of The Title Team which was founded in 1955 in Bismarck, ND. Under his leadership the company has grown to include operations across North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, and Wisconsin. Nick continues to drive new growth through strategic partnerships, acquisitions, and leadership development within his team. Before joining North Dakota Guaranty and Title, Nick spent three years in Washington, DC, working in Government Affairs. Prior to his time in Washington, DC, he spent five years as a business development manager in the Red River Valley. Nick served in the North Dakota State Senate from 2004-2008 in District 42. During his tenure, Nick vice-chaired both the Political Subdivisions and Industry Business and Labor committees. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Managerial Finance and Real Estate from the University of North Dakota in 2005. His passion for service continues through his leadership in numerous organizations including The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, Greater North Dakota Chamber, Delta Tau Delta Education Foundation, and the American Land Title Association.

DOUG JENSEN Dr. Doug Jensen became the seventh president of Bismarck State College on July 1, 2020. Prior to BSC, he served as president at Rock Valley Community College in Illinois and before that as the president of the Alabama Technology Network (ATN) in the Alabama Community College System. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and is a proud community college graduate, earning an Associate of Science degree from Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, P.A., his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, P.A., and his Doctorate of Education from Edgewood College in Madison, W.I. He and his wife, Karen, have two grown sons and enjoy exploring the region with their dog, Oliver.

DAN LEINGANG Dr. Daniel Leingang is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bismarck State College. He joined the faculty in 2000 as an assistant professor of mathematics and was appointed Dean of Academic Affairs in 2014 and later Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. He held that position until he was named Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2017. Born and raised in Mandan, N.D., Dr. Leingang has a B.A. in mathematics from Concordia College in Moorhead, M.N. He holds a M.S. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (Higher Education emphasis) from the University of North Dakota.

Alumnus of the Year BRENT EKSTROM

Living a life of service, Brent Ekstrom serves as the executive director of the Lewis & Clark Development Group – a collaboration of three nonprofit organizations: Lewis & Clark Regional Development Council, Lewis & Clark Certified Development Company, and CommunityWorks North Dakota. In this role, he says he is “actively and directly involved in community and economic development that improves individuals’ quality of life and enhances local economies.” Ekstrom and his team have helped to create and retain over 4,700 jobs and have developed or maintained 3,000 affordable single- and multi-family housing units in the state. They’ve also provided assistance on more than 2,000 small business and housing projects across North Dakota, totaling more than $794 million. In addition to serving the community through his career, Ekstrom is actively engaged in volunteer service as a youth leader at United Methodist Church and as a Boy Scout leader. He has also served on the BSC National Alumni Association Board of Directors for six years beginning in 2001 – as chairperson, vice president and board president. In 2018, Ekstrom received the National NeighborWorks Association Emerging Leader Award.

Rising Star CAMERON FLECK

Cameron Fleck used the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Electronics/ Telecommunications he earned at BSC to build NewVision Security, a business he started in a garage and grew from the ground up. Today, as owner and president of the company, he provides home and commercial security to residents and businesses across the state of North Dakota. In 2021, NewVision Security was recognized as Best Security Company and Best Audio/Video by The Bismarck Tribune’s “Best of the Best” Awards. Fleck himself has been recognized as one of North Dakota’s top 20 professionals under age 40 by The Bismarck Tribune and was featured in the 2021 Faces of Bismarck-Mandan publication. Fleck supports the community through his involvement with the Tracy Sanctuary House and Century Baptist Church as well as serving on the BSC Electronics/ Telecommunications Advisory Board the past two years. NewVision Security gives back to the community with enrichment and internships for BSC students and “Donuts and Denim,” a fundraising charity event for Closet 701.

Legacy Family THE TSCHIDERS

When Morris Tschider was stationed in Korea during the war, he received a newspaper from back home, and inside a picture of St. Mary’s homecoming queen Irene Boehm caught his eye. He decided then that once he returned, he would ask her out. She turned him down a few times, but he eventually got that date. The two later married. Both Morris and Irene attended BSC—Morris in 1952 and Irene in 1957 – and the two continued their education at the University of North Dakota (UND). After college, Morris co-founded Tschider & Smith law firm in Bismarck, and Irene returned to BSC to teach business education. The Tschiders have always been proponents of higher education, instilling the legacy in their three children, Tom, Dave and Brenda. Tom attended and played football at UND. Dave and Brenda attended both BSC and UND. Today, Dave is a partner in his father’s law firm and Brenda’s husband, Sean Smith, is a cofounder of the family law firm, where their daughter Amber Smith-Heinert, is also an associate attorney. Besides family and work life, the Tschiders have also been involved in the community. Morris has helped with fundraising for Bismarck Catholic churches and schools, and he helped to start a booster club at St. Mary’s Central High School. Irene serves on the BSC Foundation Board of Trustees, started the Project Care emergency fund for BSC students and helped organize many BSC Foundation Ball fundraisers. The Tschiders were named the 1997 BSC Alumnus of the Year and both are 1939 Society Lifetime Members.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges. Graduates with preceding their names have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5, completed 12 or more semester hours in residence and have been enrolled either part-time or full-time.

BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE The Bachelor of Applied Science degree combines career-technical course work with general education. The recipients of this degree must complete a total of 120 semester hours of course work, with a minimum of 30 semester hours of upper division level courses, and at least 30 hours of the required semester hours from Bismarck State college. ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE The Associate in Applied Science degree is awarded to students who are following a prescribed curriculum in a career and technical area. BSC ACADEMIC MACE The mace dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was used as a weapon of war. Over time, the mace was adopted as a regal symbol of authority. Academic maces symbolize an institution’s authority to grant degrees. The Bismarck State College mace was first used in 2008 at the request of President Larry C. Skogen. Designed by Michelle Lindblom, Professor of Art, the mace was crafted through a community endeavor led by the Dakota Woodturners and several BSC alumni. It is carved from North Dakota Badlands cedar, a wood native to the state. The staff on which the mace is carried represents educational stewardship. Its three rings denote important dates in the growth of the college: September 4, 1939, the first day of classes; February 12, 1951, the day the 32nd Legislative Assembly granted the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site; and April 27, 1987, the day the 50th Legislative Assembly changed the college’s name from Bismarck Junior College to Bismarck State College. The three-sided pyramid signifies BSC’s commitment to serve the community, state, and nation. Each side of the pyramid contains symbols of BSC: the college seal, the tree of knowledge, and the state Capitol building. The top of the pyramid is adorned with a bronze prow representing lifelong learning.
