Created in 1939 in response to a community need for a local college, BSC was originally known as Bismarck Junior College. The first students started classes on September 4, 1939, on the third floor of Bismarck High School with 107 full- and part-time students and 12 instructors. By the late 1940s, a new location became increasingly urgent as college enrollments soared with returning GIs. In 1951 the ND Legislature responded to an appeal from community leaders to grant the college 15 acres on the Capitol grounds for a campus site. BJC moved into its own building at 900 Boulevard Avenue in 1955. Within a few years, the college had outgrown the Capitol site. In 1959 Harold Schafer, a local entrepreneur and founder of the successful Gold Seal Company, offered the college land overlooking the Missouri River at the northwest edge of Bismarck. Classes began on the new campus in the fall of 1961 in a single building, Schafer Hall. That windy hill has been transformed over the years with the addition of dozens of buildings, countless landscape improvements, the MDU Resources Community Bowl, parking lots, sidewalks, walking paths, and more. The most recent addition, the BSC Health Sciences, brought a stateof-the-art virtual hospital to campus for students studying for careers in healthcare.
How it all started.
BSC has two satellite locations. The Mandan Campus at 1831 Twin City Drive S.E. in Mandan opened in 2007 to house the Mechanical Maintenance Technology program, and the Lineworker program on the Old Red Trail in Mandan provides an outdoor forest of poles for hands-on learning. Part of the Bismarck Public Schools for many years, the college became part of the North Dakota University System in 1984. The college’s name changed to Bismarck State College in 1987. BSC has a strong focus on the affordable, high-quality transfer programs, even as the mission has expanded. In 2018 BSC became North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution, expanding its technical program options and enhancing its focus on hands-on learning, industry partnerships, and stackable, industry-approved certificates as well as K-12 pathways that lead students to degrees in high-priority occupations. As North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution, BSC is the third largest institution in the North Dakota University System and offers more than 100 technical and transfer program options flexibly, affordably, and accessibly. By linking talent with opportunity, BSC builds workforce, drives the economy, and contributes to the strength of the communities we serve at local, national, and global levels.

With all that you are juggling, I am humbled by the determination you have shown during this difficult time and all you have done to remain on your academic path and finish your programs at Bismarck State College, North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution. Commencement Speaker MICHAEL LEBEAU
Michael LeBeau, MD, serves as the president of the Sanford Health Bismarck region, overseeing the administration of health services and is responsible for the successful planning and implementation of operational and strategic goals for the Bismarck region. Dr. LeBeau has been with Sanford Health for more than 10 years. He began at Sanford as a physician specializing in kidney care as a nephrologist. Prior to his current role, he served on the Sanford Board of Trustees and was a physician leader as the vice president of clinics. Dr. LeBeau graduated from the University of North Dakota and completed his residency in internal medicine at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Foundation in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and serves on the board of trustees for the University of North Dakota School of Medicine alumni foundation.
Student Speaker KAYDEE HAGER
Kaydee Hager is graduating with an Associate in Arts degree from Bismarck State College. She will attend the University of North Dakota in the Fall of 2021 to pursue a political science major and criminal justice minor. She plans to go on to law school and a career as a criminal defense attorney. Kaydee, who will celebrate four years of sobriety in September 2021, earned her GED from the Adult Learning Center in Bismarck in 2019. For the past three and a half years, Kaydee has been a resident at Hope Manor, a home for sober living that she credits with saving her life. Kaydee is the president of the BSC Student Government Association (SGA), carries a 4.0 GPA, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and has been named to the President’s Honor Roll for several semesters. Her volunteer activities include overseeing the BSC Little Food Pantry, working at the Runners Against Destructive Decisions (RADD) Santa Run annually, and sorting and packing food for the AID, Inc. Food Drive. Kaydee also established and now facilitates a 12-step program at the Bismarck Transitional Center. In her free time, she likes to paint, draw, and read spiritual literature. Kaydee is the daughter of Carolyn Engh and Andrew Hager of Minot.

NICK HACKER
Nick Hacker serves as President/CEO of Guaranty and Title Co. Founded in 1955, Guaranty & Title is the state’s largest title insurance and real estate closing company with operations in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana. Nick continues to drive new growth through strategic partnerships, acquisitions and leadership development within his team. Before joining Guaranty and Title, Nick spent three years in Washington, D.C., in Government Affairs. Prior to his time in Washington, D.C., he was a business development manager in the Red River Valley focused on real estate development. Nick served in the North Dakota State Senate from 2004-2008. While in the Senate he was Vice Chair of the Political Subdivision and Industry Business & Labor committee. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Real Estate from the University of North Dakota in 2005. His passion for service continues as Chair of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, Greater North Dakota Chamber Board, Delta Tau Delta Education Foundation, and several committees of the American Land Title Association.
DOUG JENSEN
Dr. Doug Jensen became the seventh president of Bismarck State College on July 1, 2020. Prior to BSC, he served as president at Rock Valley Community College in Illinois and before that as the president of the Alabama Technology Network (ATN) in the Alabama Community College System. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and is a proud community college graduate, earning an Associate of Science degree from Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, P.A., his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, P.A., and his Doctorate of Education from Edgewood College in Madison, W.I. He and his wife, Karen, have two grown sons and enjoy exploring the region with their dog, Oliver.
DAN LEINGANG
Dr. Daniel Leingang is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bismarck State College. He joined the faculty in 2000 as an assistant professor of mathematics and was appointed Dean of Academic Affairs in 2014 and later Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences. He held that position until he was named Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2017. Born and raised in Mandan, N.D., Dr. Leingang has a B.A. in mathematics from Concordia College in Moorhead, M.N. He holds a M.S. in mathematics and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership (Higher Education emphasis) from the University of North Dakota.

Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges. Graduates with preceding their names have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5, completed 12 or more semester hours in residence and have been enrolled either part-time or full-time.
BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE The Bachelor of Applied Science degree combines career-technical course work with general education. The recipients of this degree must complete a total of 120 semester hours of course work, with a minimum of 30 semester hours of upper division level courses, and at least 30 hours of the required semester hours from Bismarck State college. They must also satisfy specified requirements in communications; arts and humanities; social and behavioral sciences; and business, math, science, and technology courses. The granting of the Certificate of Completion indicates the student possesses basic knowledge necessary for entrance into a specific career field.
