Lost Mansions of Bismarck: Paging through the 1923 Bismarck Commercial Club Picture Book

Join us as Emily Sakariassen provides a then-and-now look at the Bismarck Commercial Club’s 1923 photo book. For decades, the precursor to today’s Chamber of Commerce produced promotional booklets highlighting Bismarck’s most attractive assets, to entice visitors and potential new residents. They depict our beautiful setting and scenic vistas, the parks and green spaces, civic institutions, and idyllic neighborhoods. One hundred years later, many of these places are recognizable, while others have been lost to the annals of time.

Penitentiaries, prisons, reformatories, and jails located across the globe are often prominent on lists of haunted places. The Italian Renaissance

Something spectacular happened in Italy during the 14th and 15th centuries. As Europe transitioned from what has incorrectly been called the Dark Ages, Italian city states became more urbane where education, art, politics, and humanism rose to new heights. As happens occasionally in history, remarkable individuals shared this same time and space to create what is called the Italian Renaissance.

Leonardo da Vinci (The Last Supper), Michelangelo (David and the Sistine Chapel), Machiavelli (The Prince) and Cesare Borgia (on whom much of The Prince is based) were all contemporaries who knew each other. This class will cover an overview of the Italian Renaissance with particular emphasis on the contributions of these four men and the remarkable interaction of their lives.
