Continuing Education has been an active part of the Bismarck State College campus since the 1980s and has been known by many names during that time – Corporate & Continuing Education, Continuing Education, Training & Innovation and Continuing Education & TrainND. Those titles are all quite long, so we’re best known by just CE (our unofficial nickname!) Since the department’s inception in the 80’s, we have offered a wide variety of opportunities for the community to become involved on campus. From our enrichment program to professional development, custom workforce training and conference management, you can say we do a little bit of everything! Our ultimate goal is to help fulfill BSC’s mission, to be “an innovative community college, offering high quality education, workforce training, and enrichment programs, reaching local and global communities.” The look of the department, projects, objectives and goals have changed over the years, and we are again seeing a shift as we look to support the Polytechnic initiatives that the college is pursuing. With that shift will be new opportunities, steps toward new career pathways and much more. To learn more and see how you can be part of the BSC community – as a community member – we encourage you to check out the courses in our catalog. As Milton Burle once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door!” And we are hoping you use the catalog and classes as your opportunity to try something new in 2022!

OLLI LECTURES Remembering the Roaring 20s
Using the slang of the 1920s…this class will be “the bee’s knees” (translation: the ultimate event)! We will touch on these things from the “Roaring 20s”: advertising, music, writers, radio, sports heroes, fashion, slang, fads, inventions, important events, and more. The class will conclude with a “Focus on Prohibition” (and everything that came with it) in the U.S., North Dakota, and the Bismarck-Mandan area. 2/3 Thu 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Ann Vadnie Fee: $30 Course ID: 7070053
The audience enjoys Ann’s
lectures so much because you know she loves her job, which flows over to us! - Becky Roesler
Inspired by True Events? Movies vs. History
Did that really happen? Movie audiences enjoy seeing “real events” on the “big screen.” To expect every movie with a historic base to be 100% accurate would be unrealistic. However, if a filmmaker is producing a “historical movie,” then accuracy is important because it will shape the viewer’s perceptions of history. To make this topic even more interesting, some movies covered in this class have an unexpected “connection” to a real event or person. 2/10 Thu 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Ann Vadnie Fee: $30 Course ID: 7070051

during World War II. Their stories are riveting and uplifting, highlighting their accomplishment when bravery is an essential component of the equation. 2/17 Thu 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM BSC NECE, Auditorium, Room 304 Instructor: Ann Vadnie Fee: $30 Course ID: 7070049

Resolving Workplace Conflict
Today‘s business environment presents new and growing challenges forcing organizations to continually increase productivity, improve quality, shorten cycle time, and reduce costs. Survey after survey confirms that people are working longer and harder at jobs that are more complex and have a wider range of responsibilities. At the same time, the way people work and communicate with one another is changing, creating added stress and complexity. The homogenous, singlefunction, co-located group is being replaced by dispersed, cross-functional teams with diverse areas of expertise. An unfortunate but natural byproduct of these challenges is conflict. While conflict can lead to discoveries such as new ideas and innovative breakthroughs, it can, if allowed to escalate, result in damage to critical working relationships. This course teaches leaders how to recognize the signs of escalating conflict and take appropriate action to minimize damage. Leaders are introduced to two resolution tactics—coach and mediate— and practice using the Interaction Essentials as they coach an associate to resolve a conflict. Class fee includes course materials. Class registration closes two weeks before the class to allow for supplies to be purchased.

Emotional Intelligence: Honing the Skills that Drive Your Influence
Influence. It can be an illusive concept but we know it when it occurs. And in today’s world, it’s a critical need. But what are the skills that that create influence and better yet, how can we embrace them? Researchers and business experts agree that people with high emotional intelligence are consistently the top performers in their organizations. They’re more resilient and flexible when things get tough, and they’re held in the highest regard by their leaders, peers, co-workers and others. In this interactive session, participants will learn why emotional intelligence (EQ) is far more than just a set of “people skills” and instead intentional behaviors with self and others.
