WINTER 2020
REFLECTING ON AN ERA PRESIDENT SKOGEN TO RETIRE JUNE 30
PAGE 16
EDITOR’S NOTE I look forward to winter. I’m a born and bred North Dakotan, and I’m not afraid of the cold or the dark. It’s a time to read more books, connect with family in front of the fire or with friends over a stew that's been simmering all day. It’s a time to slow down and, with the right anklelength down coat, knee-high boots, insulated gloves and fuzzy hat, I’m a happy hibernator. But this darn campus is throwing a wrench in all that. It’s busy here! First, President Skogen is retiring after 13 years. Not only will we miss him, some of us also envy the slower pace he’ll enjoy after June 30. With that departure, our presidential search is in high gear, involving many on campus and in the community. The new president will be named in late March, and I look forward to introducing her or him to you in the Summer issue of this magazine. In the midst of the search, our Mission Expansion Taskforce is meeting regularly to figure out how we’ll transition into a polytechnic model as directed by the State Board of Higher Ed. It takes a lot of strategizing to turn a ship this large, but our team of faculty, community members and employees is up to it. We’ve also launched an eSports team, expanded our Health Sciences programs with a new space, and, humming alongside all that is the ongoing, rewarding work of educating and supporting our 3,800+ students. Learn more about all of the above (and more) in these pages. Thanks for reading and keep warm!

MOM OF FOUR READY FOR THE
FRONTLINES BY MARNIE PIEHL
@
age 21, Donna Hogue became a widow. She buried her young husband on her younger son’s first birthday, and moved home to her parents in Hettinger, N.D. After a year, she started over, moving to Bismarck and working up to three part-time jobs at a time. Since that early heartbreak, Hogue has remarried, worked for the U.S. Postal Service and earned a medical transcriptionist degree. She and her husband had two more children and managed his extended military deployments. In 2017, Hogue enrolled in the BSC Cybersecurity and Information Technology program.
It’s never too late to learn new things and better yourself.
When she decided to leverage her husband’s G.I. Bill educational funding to return to school, she wasn’t sure what degree to pursue before she found her calling. While she had always liked computers, the greatest appeal of the Cybersecurity program was how it related to her family. “When I found out about cybersecurity, my first thought was about protecting my children.”
Her goal, according to her Palo Alto Networks Cybersecurity Scholarship application, is to teach her four children that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to learn new things and better yourself.
After graduation, Hogue would like to be on the front lines of the Cybersecurity field. “I want to look for exploits coming across the screen. I want to find the binary code that comes through and looks out of place — to see where and how it happens. What does it look like at the back door? When something comes through – I want to catch it.”
AFFORDABLE TUITION AND SCHOLARSHIPS GALORE Not only is BSC the most affordable college in North Dakota at about $4200/year, the BSC Foundation offers more than $400,000 in scholarships to students annually.
PALO ALTO NETWORKS CYBERSECURITY SCHOLARSHIPS BSC educational partner Palo Alto Networks offers two cybersecurity scholarships annually of $2500 focused on recruiting women and diverse candidates in the program.
Apply today at bismarckstate.edu/scholarships
PALO ALTO NETWORKS SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS • Woman or diverse candidate noting cybersecurity as interest area in application • Minimum high school GPA of 2.5 • Second semester scholarship requires BSC GPA of 3.0 • FT or PT student with minimum of seven credits

Now, at 42, Hogue is her family’s computer expert. She helps her aging father with his computer needs, even as she keeps a lockdown on her 11- and 12-year-old children’s Minecraft and Terraria download requests. She also works full time as a financial analyst while managing an average of 18 credits per semester and a busy family.
Ben Brick - Creatively Drawn
BY KAYLA SCHMIDT
Ben Brick is a self-described Swiss Army knife of illustration. Whatever you need, he can create it. He’s drawn his experience from a variety of sources. After graduating from BSC, he was a contributor for some pretty major names in the Bismarck area — from The Bismarck Tribune and Quality Printing to Agency MABU. “I’ve gotten to work at some amazing jobs, but I was always looking for my own way of doin’ things.” Ultimately it was Ben’s unique perspective that allowed him to begin working on his own as a freelance illustrator. “I was going to be an architect,” Ben says of his initial plans as a student at BSC. But after taking an educational hiatus to take a job in Disney World, he realized his interests required a closer look. “I’d sit and stare at the details on the outside of all the rides, and I found the decorations were more appealing to me than the actual engineering.”
Ben. “He was just really encouraging. When he looked at my work, he was the first person to say positive things about what I was making. Of course it wasn’t perfect, but it made me realize that drawing was something I could really do, and I decided to dig into that part of graphic design.” Recent projects Ben has tackled include creating beer labels for a brewery out of Watertown, S.D.; helping local business, Mighty Missouri Coffee Company, release a complete rebrand; and illustrating Pickles the Dog, a children’s book written by local author, Kat Socks. “The kids book was a pretty cool deal. I remember thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I can get paid for this.’” Ben is a member of the downtown artist collaborative, The Good Kids, and is a contributor and organizer with Makewell.
It was a class with BSC Graphic Design Associate Professor Sean Thorenson that really hooked

From wall murals to stickers, Ben’s work is hard to miss at any scale. His three years at BSC provided the foundations for a colorful career. “It started as a stepping stone and ended up being a complete education. I didn’t need anything else. I knew what I wanted to do.”

Recovery as Discovery: Finding beauty in the ugliness of addiction
R
BY MARNIE PIEHL
etired BSC art professor and alumnae Michelle Lindblom paints big, vibrant abstract pieces. Her works can be found in several buildings on campus and
displayed in homes and galleries throughout the region. She begins her paintings without a clear idea of where they’ll end, and so the titles are important (Regeneration, The Clarity Within, The Ride, etc.). The titles “reveal … where I started.” " The beginnings of my work are often full of reckless abandonment, a free flow of color, movement, and shapes." – From Embracing My Beautiful Daughter, Lindblom's devised theater piece
During the creation of a piece, she’s releasing her subconscious, all the “cerebral mumbo jumbo” in her head. " For an artist whose intention is to delve deeper into a subject or issue, the ugly needs to be present on some level as a counterpoint to the beauty portrayed. Not denying ugliness and being aware of it, changes perception. Seeing, visualizing, feeling the ugly gives the beauty greater weight and meaning." – From Embracing My Beautiful Daughter The finished artwork is striking – big, bold and colorful. It is her long-time process – visualizing the ugly to give the beauty greater weight – that has helped her survive the long, gritty, journey she and her family have been on since January 2016 when she learned her daughter McKenzie Lindblom-Eggert (pictured here) had a substance use disorder.

So Lindblom made her journal a public facing blog (michellelindblom.com/blog) that incorporated her art. Last summer, she took part in a workshop that explored art, words and connection. Then this fall, all of those elements came together when she brought her family’s recovery journey home and to the stage at Recovery Reinvented, an annual event focused on ways to reinvent addiction recovery in North Dakota. “I just felt it was time to speak my truth in my home state. I left and didn’t want to look back. I loved my work at BSC, but I was ready to leave. I find it healing to come back and do this,” Lindblom says. Lindblom’s former BSC colleague, Dan Rogers, professor emeritus, had been asked by the North Dakota Council on the Arts to put together an 8-minute devised theatre piece for Recovery Reinvented. In his search for a topic, he realized that Michelle’s art and words fit the bill. Lindblom retired from BSC in 2015, and she and her husband relocated to Bend, Ore., They knew McKenzie was struggling but were stunned in January of 2016 when she asked them to join her at a counseling session and revealed she was using alcohol to cope with depression and anxiety.
“I looked at [Michelle’s] site, I read the blog, and I thought: Here it is. Multimedia, devised theater, and art as an extended metaphor for addiction and recovery,” Rogers says. “To take what was so [ugly] to create beautiful works of art is the best thing in life.”
Lindblom’s husband asked if she could just stop. Desperate to please her parents, she said yes. But after several months of self-imposed isolation during which, they later learned, she was drinking heavily, McKenzie landed in the hospital with liver failure due to alcoholic hepatitis. Lindblom and Eggert quickly came to understand that addiction is not a simple matter of self-control. It’s a life and death battle. Lindblom began to keep a journal “to keep straight what she’s gone through and we’ve gone through.”
" The question of beauty in art is a question I often contemplate when describing my own work. My intent has never been to create pretty pictures — pictures that match a couch." – From Embracing My Beautiful Daughter
McKenzie's physical health returned, but her recovery struggles continued. For that first year the family kept their experiences private, but Lindblom realized that keeping things quiet made their experience seem shameful. She needed to go public and find connections. “I knew that this is how I would survive. I have to talk about it; I have to connect with other people. I began talking to other parents. People need to know we’re not alone. We need to help each other. Compassion with addiction, it never ends.” “One in three families is touched at different levels by addiction. If she had heart disease, would there be shame? "
Together the former colleagues developed Embracing My Beautiful Daughter incorporating Lindblom’s words, arts and family story. She presented the piece on the main stage at Recovery Reinvented and said using Roger’s theater coaching tips (center, take a breath) helped her take her story to a live audience. “Art is what saves me,” Lindblom says. " So I paint. The slashing brown stroke, the bold yellow, the delightful runaway drip of heavy blue, the sudden burst of golden light. The wild roiling, the meticulous shadow … my tools of recovery, my reflections on meaning, seeds of hope … the act of embracing my beautiful daughter." – From Embracing My Beautiful Daughter
Dakota Media Access (dakotamediaaccess.org) will air a version of Embracing My Beautiful Daughter in the spring of 2020. Read Lindblom’s blog at michellelindblom.com/blog. Learn more about Recovery Reinvented at recoveryreinvented.com.

rowing up in the island nation of Tonga, located in the South Pacific Ocean, gave
Sikotilani (Koti) Sheffield Palanite the passion and skills needed to excel at BSC’s Lineworker program. Palanite’s village didn’t have electricity until 1995. “I remember my brother and I would fight over who would get to flip the one switch in our house that turned the light on or off. I was always thankful for the power people who gave us light at night. I told my brother that when I grow up I want to be one of those to send power to my other cousins who didn’t have electricity then.”

His upbringing not only gave him a passion for this field of work, but it also made Palanite very talented at one of the critical skills needed for the job – climbing. “As kids, we only went into our house to sleep, so the majority of our days was spent outside climbing coconut and mango trees and hanging out at the beach.” As a result, the heights involved in lineworking don’t bother him at all. His biggest challenge is remembering to use the safety gear instead of free climbing the poles. Palanite’s journey to attending BSC began when he first came to the U.S. in July 2008 on a two-year stint as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During that time, he met the Sheffield family in Minnesota. They were so supportive to him, he said he became part of their family. After he returned to Tonga, Charla Sheffield coordinated a student visa, enabling him to return to the U.S. for college. He attended Normandale Community College in Minnesota.
Through church activities, he met his now wife in 2012. After they were married, she got a job in Bismarck, which brought them here. As far as attending BSC, he said he knew he wanted to continue his education. When he found out BSC had a lineworker program, he was all in. Palanite said his lineworker classes are the most exciting part of his day, second only to being a dad to his three children. “My kids are my biggest motivation in school.”
His professors are impressed with him, and he is likewise impressed with BSC and the program. “I suggested BSC’s lineworker program to a couple of my friends for their high school children, and even to my relatives back in Tonga.” Palanite hopes to get a lineworker position right after graduating and would like to stay in Bismarck, a place that has become home.
He has so excelled at the program, his professor has encouraged him to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Energy Management. Palanite said he’s looking forward to continuing on to earn that degree.

BSC PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH – AN INSIDE JOB Rather than hiring an outside consultant, BSC’s presidential search is being led by Rita Lindgren, recently retired Chief HR Officer at BSC, along with Angie Friez, Lindgren's successor. By keeping the work of the search with an internal team, BSC will save as much as $50,000 in consultancy fees. Lindgren led the search that resulted in the hiring of current president Larry C. Skogen in 2007, as well as a successful Valley City State University search in 2014. Lindgren retired in January after 42 years at BSC. She says the search is a great way to cap her long career. The search kicked off in October and will conclude in March. The Search Committee consists of nine members representing the community, BSC, business and higher education.

MOVING TOWARD MISSION EXPANSION A Mission Expansion Taskforce was established this fall to provide oversight as BSC moves to meet the mission change directive of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education (SBHE). In September 2018, the SBHE, directed BSC to develop the structures necessary to respond to workforce needs with a new mission as a polytechnic institution. Specifically, the college is to offer bachelor of applied science degrees while at the same time maintaining the college’s current certificate, diploma, and associate degree offerings. “Simply put, they directed the college to do everything we currently do but with more four-year technical bachelor degree options,” says Dr. Dan Leingang, Vice President for Academic Affairs and task force chair. BSC currently offers bachelor of applied science degrees in Energy Management and in Cybersecurity and Information Technology.

P
resident Larry C. Skogen will retire from BSC on June 30, 2020. A Hettinger, N.D., native and career U.S. Air Force officer, he became the sixth president of Bismarck State College on March 1, 2007. The author of a legal history of federal Indian policy, as well as articles and reviews in historical journals, Dr. Skogen describes himself first and foremost as a historian – one of the things he will turn his focus to upon retirement.
What first drew you to this job?
Did you know you wanted to be a college president?
I was the vice president for academics at the Air Force Academy in New Mexico. I’d been there five years and had recently moved my parents from Arizona to the Black Hills. I thought, if I could find a job closer to them and home, I would apply just for the heck of it. So, I looked, saw the BSC ad, and thought that could be kind of fun. I left North Dakota in 1980; I was ready to come back.
Not initially. When I left the Air Force, I wanted to teach history at the college level, but I never got an interview, despite the fact that I had a wonderful circle of mentors writing me reference letters. Finally, one of those mentors told me that faculty hire faculty. He said, ‘you know how to follow rules and impose order — be an administrator instead.’ I was hired for the first administrative position I applied for – Dean/VP at New Mexico Air Force Academy. I had the opportunity to teach a little history and philosophy during that time.
Who has been most influential to you as a president? My biggest influence was Brigadier General Rodney P. Kelly. He always treated everyone with respect, which is not the case with all generals. He listened. He’s the one person I worked for and I said, ‘General Kelly is the guy I want to be.’ He had respect for everyone, whatever their position in the organization. He never held himself above the people who worked for him. We all would have taken the hill for him. Of course, I learned a lot from negative leadership too — leaders who felt the only time that counted was their time. From 1989-91, Skogen attended Arizona State University as a doctoral candidate in history. I’ve had leadership opportunities that made a difference: When I was at the Air Force Academy, I was chosen out of 625 officers and faculty to get my Ph.D. Each division got to nominate two faculty members. It was pure luck the year I was selected. My division, the humanities division, got an extra slot. Skogen earned full pay and benefits during his doctoral studies. The academy paid his tuition, books and fees.
What did you think this job would be like? I thought it would be a good opportunity to work with people. The way I see it, the campus hired me, and my job has been to serve the campus. I always have felt that the job of president is to provide resources and latitude for people to do their jobs. In the main, that’s worked out pretty well.
In what ways has being the president of BSC changed you? I have grown old in the service of my country here. I was a young man when I arrived — I was 55 years old, and I’m 67 now. I would hope I’m the same person as when I got here. The job isn’t supposed to be about me, it’s about the institution. I hope people will say when I leave that BSC is a better place than when I got here. I feel like I’m part of a well-oiled machine. My predecessors did a great job in setting up the college to go to the next level. I’m hoping that I set things up similarly for the next president.
I was the richest grad student on campus. It was always my turn to buy beer and pizza.
17

Who has been a mentor to you here?
days [executive assistant] Janell [Campbell] keeps me on track.
[Bismarck legislator] Bob Martinson loves BSC and has been willing to use his influence to mentor me through [the legislative] processes. And Vern Dosch [retired CEO of NISC] has been a good friend who has been important to my success.
I believe in management by walking around. And because of that, everyone’s been a mentor to me. I walk into offices and talk to people. That’s been really important.
For the first eight or nine years, I had a kitchen cabinet that included Vern, Niles Huschka and Clay Jenkinson. It was good to have a non-threatening environment to talk about ideas and share thoughts.
What are you most proud of?
[Retired senior VP] Dave Clark has been incredibly important to this campus and to me. He knows the ins and outs of state government and how the system works.
I’m proud of a lot of things. When I got here, people were still saying ‘high school on the hill’ or ‘high school with ashtrays.’ I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve left all that behind. Now they say, ‘wow that’s quite a campus up there!’ BSC is really on the map. We, as a campus, have moved from a negative attitude about coming to BSC, to an attitude of BSC pride.
[Retired executive assistant] Debbie Van Berkom was great when I was coming in. She knew where all the bodies were buried. I was clueless – I didn’t know what I should know. She would tell me to go do this, to make sure I knew a certain person…These
I’m very pleased that the board has recognized BSC as a polytechnic. That is an accomplishment that is in the best interest of the college, the community and our students. We went from a junior college, to a community college, to a community
college that offers four-year degrees and now to a polytech. It’s a great milestone to achieve.
CAMPUS BUILDING ADDITIONS & UPDATES 2007-2020
When I got here, the talk of the community was that BSC needed to be a four-year college. Frankly, that made no sense to me… the last thing we needed was another fouryear. As a polytech, we’ll be everything we are, plus more BAS degrees — meeting what the community wanted 13 years ago.
During President Skogen’s tenure, BSC grew in students and capacity. In 2013, the college’s enrollment exceeded 4,000 for the first time, cementing BSC as the third largest college in the North Dakota University System. Additionally, the college, often in partnership with the BSC Foundation, completed 16 major building projects since 2007, creating, as Skogen says, “the most beautiful campus in North Dakota.”
What were the hardest times of your presidency?
▪ BSC Foundation/Alumni House Purchased 2007 ▪ Mandan Mechanical Maintenance Campus Added 2007 ▪ Lidstrom Hall Completed 2008 ▪ National Energy Center of Excellence (NECE) Completed 2008 ▪ Meadowlark Building Leased 2010 ▪ BSC Aquatic and Wellness Center Completed 2010 ▪ Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy Completed 2010 ▪ Mystic Hall Remodeled 2010 ▪ BSC Technical Center Remodeled 2012 ▪ NECE 4th Floor Completed 2014 ▪ Robert A. Kuntz Physical Plant Completed 2014 ▪ Ritchie Hall Completed 2015 ▪ Gate City Bank Hall Completed 2015 ▪ Student Union Addition Completed 2015 ▪ Library, English and Arts (LEA) Hall Completed 2015 ▪ BSC Health Sciences Building Phase I Completed 2019 Phase II Completion Spring 2020
Our one really bad budget cycle hurt a lot. When we knew we had to cut our budget by 20 percent and we understood that equated to 52 people. I personally asked people to retire. We let go of a couple people when we eliminated positions. That was really hard. The other day that is forever in my head is the day in 2011 that [Chief Buildings and Grounds Officer] Bob Kuntz died. He died out of the blue and totally unexpectedly. That was a terrible day.
What have the greatest challenges been? The time just prior and during my time as interim chancellor – those were very hard times. I said at a meeting at one point, prior to my appointment, “If there’s any way that I can help, I will.”
What was your best day? My best day was in November of 2006 when the State Board of Higher Education offered me the job. [Former SBHE board member] Eddie Dunn called

Then I got a call asking me to be acting chancellor. After three months I was asked to serve as interim chancellor. I agreed as long as my contract allowed me to return to BSC. I didn’t come back to North Dakota to be part of the political process every day, which is what that is. I came back to be the president of BSC.

me up. That was really an exciting day for me, personally, but I’ve been part of so many great days for BSC. The other day, the governor, two senators and the U.S. Secretary of Interior were all on campus and talking about how great it is to be at BSC!
finished. I hope to have the time to do scholarship. I have a lot of projects in my head – some Native American history, some history of North Dakota. I plan to stay here, but we’ll travel.
We’ve had so many good days here: the first day of classes every year, commencement and shaking hands with our graduates, just going around talking to students, when we got funding for the Cybersecurity program, the day the governor signed legislation for $8.9 million for our health sciences building, when Governor Dalrymple signed legislation to finish the 4th floor of the NECE — I remember so well when that space was unfinished, and I’d pull a chair up to the windows and think, ‘how are we gonna get this finished?’
How has life changed for you?
What advice would you give to the next president? I would advise anyone who will be president to get out and around on campus. Get out and talk to faculty in offices, interact with students in the Union, attend the athletic events and concerts, go to the student art shows. I think that is so important. In a job like mine it’s easy to spend hours in the office doing what you’ve got to do, but interacting with the people working here and our students is important. They need to know who you are, and you need to know who they are and what their concerns are.
When I began, I was part of a family of five – both of my parents and two siblings. Now I’m in a family of two, that’s part of growing older. I’ve seen my youngest son get married
The job isn’t supposed to be about me, it’s about the institution. I hope people will say, when I leave, that BSC is a better place than when I got here.
They used to call it management by walking around, and I do it because I like it. This week I was over talking to Rich Bahm in auto collision, and he told me about the wonderful opportunities his students are being offered – I don’t hear about that in a staff meeting.
What’s special about BSC’s students? I think our students are really genuine. They’re here regardless of age or income. They’re here focused on whatever their personal goals are, and those are so varied. I like talking to them, interacting with them – they are truly genuine people.
I think there’s a strong sense of community here. BSC is not a pass-through juncture in a career. The overwhelming majority of employees are committed to this institution and community. Maybe that’s why presidents stay to retirement. Another strength is that much of our leadership team is home grown and connected to the college and community. They aren’t recruited in, they’ve come up through the ranks, and that’s worked for BSC.
What does retirement hold for you? My real passion is historical scholarship. That was pushed to the side when I become an administrator. I started working on a history project in the early 1980s that’s still waiting to be

and have three children. I have six grandchildren, and I’ve reconnected with an old friend in Hettinger. We’re having the time of our lives together. I used to see my 60s and think ‘there’s not much left,’ but I’m having more fun than I’ve ever had.
Charleston, West Virginia] as a community, that epitomized exactly why we’re in education – to celebrate students. When I go to plays or concerts, I go backstage to talk to the young people and thank them. Those things bring me so much joy. I’m really going to miss the students.
What will you miss the most about BSC? Interacting with the students. They are why people are in education. They are our future, and to me, they are what it’s about. When we welcomed back our volleyball team [from the 2019 NJCAA Div II National Volleyball Tournament in

As BSC worked to bring all the health science programs to campus over this last year, more than $3.5 million in grants and donations were awarded for equipment, supplies and technology, as well as a renovation that created a 30,000 square foot virtual hospital training facility providing state-of-the-art training to BSC’s healthcare students. “Our BSC Foundation and Property Holdings Boards had the foresight to purchase this property more than five years ago to ensure we could provide for the future growth of Bismarck State College,” said Kari Knudson, Executive Director of the BSC Foundation and Vice President for College Advancement.
Rural Development Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program to expand and improve the college’s ability to educate nurses in surrounding rural communities. Additionally, the Otto Bremer Trust awarded a $200,000 grant to the BSC Foundation for building renovations. “We couldn’t have met our goal without these important partners that value improving quality of life for all citizens through access to good healthcare and a trained workforce,” said Knudson. “The project is close to completion, and students are now enjoying the space, thanks to our generous donors, loyal BSC supporters, and the grants that we’ve received for this project.”
We couldn’t have met our goal without these important partners.
“The financial support we’ve received for this project has been critical in reaching our goal and providing the best in healthcare training. We’re especially grateful to Sanford Health who established the lead gift for our project”
In addition to Sanford Health, the project received broad support from a variety of organizations and donors who saw the value of how high-quality healthcare and a skilled healthcare workforce can positively impact a community, including the North Dakota Legislature which provided BSC with the funds to purchase the building from the Foundation. More than $830,000 was awarded from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration to purchase equipment and supplies for Health Sciences programs, with BSC providing a 50 percent match on funds. $247,366 was awarded to BSC from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of

The renovation of the Health Sciences building was completed last summer, and students in Nursing, Surgical Technology, Emergency Medical Technician and Paramedic Technology began attending classes there in August 2019. The campus and community celebrated with an Open House Oct. 9. The Medical Laboratory Technician program will move into the building in April, following completion of the second phase of remodeling. With that move, all healthcare programs will be under one roof and in a position to grow.

FUNDING SUPPORTS RURAL NURSING EDUCATION A $247,366 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Office of Rural Development Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant program is making a difference to the nursing education BSC offers in the rural North Dakota communities of Ashley, Garrison, Harvey and Hettinger.

“This grant will really improve the experience of students in our rural sites. We’re there to train nurses from these communities, in their communities, so they may continue to live and work there upon graduation,” says Dan Leingang, BSC Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Thanks to this grant, we can create even better access to nursing degrees in these areas. “ The IVN equipment in the satellite locations is nearing the end of its lifespan, and the grant allows BSC to upgrade the systems and install identical technology at the new Hettinger site. BSC provides a 15 percent cash match to the three-year grant.

Challenge Grant
Career Builders
The BSC Foundation can access a 50% match on endowed gifts through the N.D. Challenge Fund. Matching funds will be added to your endowment, maximizing your gift to the college. Donations can come in a variety of ways – as a direct gift of cash or pledge (up to seven years), stock, IRA, or a commitment for a future gift through a bequest in a will or life insurance policy. Donations of $5,000 to an endowment are eligible for a 40% state tax credit.
This opportunity provides for a direct scholarship to students pursuing technical programs at Bismarck State College. Donations to Career Builders are matched 100% by the State of N.D. through the North Dakota University System. This program was created to help alleviate workforce needs and keep trained students in North Dakota through a commitment to work in the state for three years following graduation.
Your contributions help us further our mission of offering high-quality education and workforce training that is attainable for everyone!
