BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution is at the center of building sustainable communities. Workforce development leads to economic development, which leads to community development. With each of these entities working together, both community resources and human potential is maximized. Through collaboration, we can: •
Boost the economy and enrich our communities through industry partnerships
•
Improve the health and wellness of our community through educational opportunities
•
Create a highly skilled workforce to strengthen any industry
BUILDING WORKFORCE TO DRIVE THE ECONOMY
For every advanced-degree professional within a community, two individuals with a bachelor’s degree are necessary to support that professional, and seven highly skilled technical individuals are needed to make up the entire team. For example, a physician who needs a nurse and a physician’s assistant may also need to hire a business manager, an IT specialist, custodial staff and lab techs. Successful communities require teams of people with various skill sets. BSC educates the 7s and the 2s while preparing people to be the 1s through our business and industry partnerships.

INTERNET OF THINGS
The Internet of Things connects everything-impacting lives daily. Being connected is advantageous; however, the rapid growth of technology and its complexity offers challenges, too. These challenges can be overcome by adhering to the Industry 4.0 standards.
INDUSTRY 4.0
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) is the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern smart technology. The world is in the middle of the fourth industrial revolution with the continued expansion of computers into our operations, and the interconnectivity that results. It is imperative these standards be considered when developing curriculum and learning experiences, whether in the classroom, hands-on-training or through experience. The standards shown in the 4.0 spiral include all occupations, so graduates need to be prepared. BSC is actively engaged in embedding these standards within our five sector program pillars: Health Sciences, Agriculture, Manufacturing/Automation, Cybersecurity and Energy.

K-12 PATHWAY MODEL
The K–12 pathway creates a model for both students and educators to follow. Pathway fundamentals include internships, Work-Study programs and integrated learning environments. The pathways help students identify and enroll in courses leading to specific career fields or occupations. Clearly defined pathways between K-12 and BSC enable students to prepare themselves for higher education. Students can even earn college credit and industry credentials while in 10–12th grade.

CAREER PLACEMENT
CAREER PLACEMENT – 98% of BSC graduates are employed or continuing their education. Programs offered by North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institution are developed in partnership with employers, alumni, other working professionals and the BILT. These groups provide strategic advice and feedback to BSC faculty and leadership on industry trends directly impacting curriculum for programs and courses. This direct access to industry leaders and employers is one of the reasons why polytechnic graduates have such a high employment rate. To better serve the employment needs of BSC students, an online career service system is available for students and alumni seeking employment with local, regional and national companies. Students may also seek assistance with finding part-time, summer or permanent employment. BSC Career Services also provides reliable tools to assess the interest of students; offer education and career options; prepare students for job searches; and connect students to employment opportunities.
