Poetry inTheGrade 5 “I Am From” Poem A rhythm, a rhyme, a moment caught in time.” ~ Charles Ghigna on Poetry

“POETRY IS a song, that is sung slowly.” -Rafica

BISS Broadcast: Issue 4 September 6th 2013

What is poetry to you? Like Charles Ghigna, the Grade 5 students explored this question. They all agreed that poetry is all around us and can be expressed in many different forms including writing, music and paintings. For many of the Grade 5 students, however, poetry is much more! With brainstorming complete and an initial understanding of what “poetry is” formed, students began to write the first poems of the Grade 5 year! Through the power of imagery, symbols and senses, each student created a special poem that conveyed their experiences, memories, thoughts and feelings, problems and successes, from an entirely new perspective. Words became sentences, and sentences became stanzas and after some editing, each poem was brought to life. With her guidance and support, Ms. Davies helped each student turn their poem into art! Students presented parts of their poems at the Grade 5 assembly. The Grade 5 class would like to thank Ms. Davies for her help and support! Also, we want to say thanks to the entire BISS community who supported the Grade 5 Assembly. Thanks for making the first assembly of the year a success! Grade 6 Science Starting the Year With a Bang! We have started the year bang! The students have been learning how to be safe in the laboratory and completed a video on a particular rule for working on an experiment. Each student has had the opportunity to explore the equipment in the laboratory and they are beginning to understand the steps in the Scientific Method. Also as part of our laboratory rules, cleaning up is very important! As part of our unit we are learning all about independent, dependent and control variables in our part of science method and how to conduct an experiment. As a class we went outside and tested who would be the best thrower in the class, particularly looking at how to make the test fair and control all of the variables. We have looked at the difference between evaporation with a Bunsen burner and leaving chemicals in the window to see crystallization. All Year 6 students can now consider themselves budding, young Scientists!

BISSUnder ROCKS! 14 Girls Soccer Update Soccer sorcery was sizzling for the under 14 girls on Tuesday. Victory 4:1. This was our first game, with their boots still shiny and stiff, they were bubbling, but never bumbling, with the excitement, bounding backwards and forwards and creating havoc for our opposition, ACI. The game was played with heart and was a spectator’s delight. Our mothers witnessed their girls wiz around, powerful in their determination to back each other. Our new student Isabel, from the USA, chased the action with vigilance, and with the help of our forward pack of Arun, Sung Min, Syafiqa, and Merceedes, she managed to put away three goals. Sung Min, Syafiqa, Isabel and Arun never took their eyes off the ball or slowed their pace. The best friends of Merceedes and Syafiqa, combined like a duet to score a blinder of a goal. Our more experienced players led the way and our new players; Dhanya, Ji Soo, Miley and Kitty were passionate in their debut game, all of them displaying their enthusiasm and glimpses of their potential. The backs and goalies of our team were tenacious in their defense. Like fox terriers; brave and fierce. Rica has found her position as a back, focused and quick to react to a threat. Our shared goalies Tina and Yena were a brick wall and our team is grateful for their persistence and skill. BISS under 14 girls’ soccer ROCKS, and illustrates why our small school ensures your children have the opportunity to shine! So I extend an invitation to all the mums and dads, WIN or LOOSE, this team is an entertaining combination of verve and fun, and worth the trip. Special thanks to Jazz, our assistant coach, who shares her experience and knowledge generously. Thanks to Ms Dryer, our Athletics Director, who always finds the time to support coaches and players. A Great Start for U14 Soccer Boys! The U14 boys’ soccer team didn’t get a victory in their first match, but have shown some great improvements after the first two weeks of the season. They played against ACI in their first match. Their coach, Mr. Bourke, was happy with how the team played and knows they have some crucial skills to continue to develop in practice. This team is also small in numbers so each boy played almost the whole game. Their efforts were great and everyone played various positions on the field. They are looking forward to their next match and more excitement during the season!

U12 Soccer Compete in First Match The U12 Boys’ Soccer Team competed in their first match of the season against BCIS. The team anxiously waited, as their opponents were late to arrive at the Olympic Center. The boys practiced their skills, worked as a team and did drills while they waited. After BCIS arrived, they played a short match of 15 minutes. The athletes were very excited and it showed from their energy on the field. Each team member played nearly the whole game and played in various positions on the pitch. Coach John & Coach Langille were happy with the performance, but also know that each practice is very important for the athletes. The next U12 match is against The German School at the Olympic Center on September 17th. Good luck to all of the athletes.

MS Badminton Tournament Oct 12 The annual ISAC Middle School (grades 6-8) Badminton Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12th at WAB. This event is scheduled to take place from approximately 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. All of the details have not yet been finalized for this event. If you would like to participate, please sign up at the PE office or speak to Ms. Dryer about the event. Everyone must play in a doubles format, so please choose a partner for this event. HS Volleyball Teams Have First Match The High School Volleyball Teams are well into their busy season. The girls are competing in Division II and Division III again this year, while the boys’ team will compete in Division III. The first matches of the season were held at ISB on Friday, August 30th for all three teams. Although the girls’ teams did not leave with a victory that night, they were confident in the progress that has been made and can focus on a few key areas of their game. The boys’ team was victorious over ISB with the game going into the 5th set and the BISS team narrowly achieving the win. The team were excited about the victory, but also know there are many more games that they need to focus on. The boys’ team, coached by Ms. Dryer, and the DII girls’ team, coached by Mr. Ellmers, also participated in a pre-season tournament held at BCIS on Saturday, August 31st. This was a good chance for the teams to get more game experience in an informal setting. Every team member played in many sets and enjoyed the atmosphere of the day. The boys’ team was victorious over BCIS & HISB, while the girls’ team also achieved a victory over BCIS. This was a learning experience both for the students and coaches. Each team has practice and games every week of the season. The athletes are committed to making improvements in their game and have begun to practice at lunch and even stay after their scheduled practice time for more skill development. If any athletes would like to stay after 4:20 on Monday or Thursday for extra practice, there will be coaches available to help them. Good luck to all of the teams as they continute to compete in ISAC. The final tournament of the year is the ACAMIS event in Hong Kong from October 24-26. Ten girls and ten boys will be selected for this special tournament and parents will be notified by both email and a hard copy of the information will be sent home with the athlete. If you have any questions regarding ACAMIS or other BISS sporting events, please don’t hesitate to contact me; mdryer@biss.com.cn Ms. Dryer K-12 Athletics Coordinator

FCD Freedom from Chemical Dependency Dear Parents: Please join us for an FCD coffee morning on Tuesday September 10th 8:309:30 in the BISS Annex. As part of our health education program and ongoing commitment to prevention and wellness, we have invited Prevention Specialists from FCD Educational Services to join our community. FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools. Since 1976, they have taught over a million students of all ages. Their mission is to: • Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use • Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years. • Teach students and adults how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately • Educate students, parents, teachers, and administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs • Promote awareness of drug addiction, including alcoholism, as a progressive, chronic, and often fatal disease • Provide educational communities with the guidance and training necessary to implement comprehensive, effective approaches to substance abuse prevention FCD Prevention Specialists are highly trained professionals who have achieved long-term recovery from alcohol or other drug addictions. This unique perspective enhances the credibility of their message and provides students with role models for happy, healthy, drug-free living. The FCD Prevention Specialist will present a parent workshop to offer support and guidance in helping your children enjoy a drug-free adolescence. Some of the topics to be addressed include: Effective ways to communicate with your child about drugs and drug use Up-to-date facts about current drug use and trends What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug experimentation How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond. This program presents a perfect opportunity for discussing alcohol and other drug-related issues with your children. Parental involvement is crucial to our efforts to reduce the risks teenagers face. We want our students to hear from both school and home that we are concerned about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by adolescents, and that we are committed to keeping our children safe. Sincerely, Ms Karen Shrimpton School Counselor kshrimpton@biss.com.cn
