CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE Dear BITSians, I hope 2016 has been a year of growth and fulfilment for all of you. At BITSAA, we had set ourselves some challenging goals for the year, and I am happy to share with you that we have made remarkable progress. BITSAA organized a successful 4th edition of BITSians’ Day on 5th August 2016. Thousands of BITSians across 25 countries and total of 180 locations came together to celebrate the common thread that binds them – the spirit of being BITSians. The first ever BITSians’ Day in South America was organized in Rio. BITSian Fridays was launched on social media to rekindle the nostalgia of BITSians for their alma mater. Every Friday, a new contest was announced on social media, adding to the frenzy of BITSians’ Day. BITSAA International launched a brand new, modern official website(www.bitsaa.org) to host the community and everything related to BITS alumni. A unique sporting event- Burn a Million Calories(BAMC) was organized by BITSAA’s BITS2Fitness Team from 6th to 19th November 2016. BITSians’ across the globe came together to collectively burn 1 million calories over a span of 14 days. It was the biggest sporting event BITSAA had ever organized, spanning across multiple locations and sports. The event received a tremendous response! BITSAA disbursed approx. INR 22 lacs impacting 70+ students, 30+ alumni and faculty towards MCN scholarships, graduate application scholarships, faculty excellence awards, student projects awards, travel grants, trophies for excellence in sports, paper publication assistance among other purposes. I am happy to say that we managed to offer support to many BITSians and their families in their hour of need. The Chimpooji Fundraiser of approx. INR 30 lakhs this past year is one such example of how we could create an impact through generous giving. Our initiatives like Alumni Mentoring Program, BITS2MSPHD, BITS2BSCHOOL and the newly energized Career Center have also benefited numerous BITSian alumni, students and faculty. All of this has been possible only with the enthusiastic and incessant support of each one of you. I heartily thank you for being a part of this journey, and I am confident that your belief in us will help us rise to the pinnacle of success. I would also like to thank the volunteers whose tireless efforts have enabled us to achieve this success, and make a lasting impact on the BITSian community. From a 3 member organization founded more than 15
1
years back, it has grown to 150+ volunteers serving a community of 40000+ alumni. I hope you will all find it within yourselves to contribute to this vibrant community in your own way. I assure you it will be a very rewarding experience to see the impact you’ve made to your alma mater and the lives of your fellow alumni. Thank You Jayan Ramankutty Chairman, BITSAA International

BITSians’ DAY 2016 Every year since 2013, BITSians’ Day is celebrated on the first Friday of August, when BITSAA tries to recreate the magical feeling every BITSian first had when they entered the campus. As 5th of August 2016 dawned, BITSians across the globe gathered together to celebrate the 4th edition of BITSians’ Day. The final locations were announced through the unique Pokémon Go themed map developed by the Chapter Relations Team.
From New Zealand to Canada and Japan to Europe, BITSians’ Day 2016 was successfully organized across 6 Continents, 25 countries and 111 locations. Before the Olympians touched Rio, BITSians conquered it by organizing the first ever meetup in South America in Rio. They indulged in celebrations and nostalgia, reliving the best part of their youth and revelling in their bond of BITSianness. Old bonds were rejuvenated, new ones forged, and experiences shared over some delectable food. It was a day when every BITSian came face-to-face with his/her 16-17-year-old self. Offices and universities saw an unprecedented representation of the BITSian spirit, and there was a deluge of #BITSiansDay memories on the social media as well. This year BITSians’ Day was featured by The Hindu. QR codes were also introduced for registration to BITSians’ Day events.
9
About a month before BITSians’ Day, BITSian Fridays was launched on social media to rekindle the nostalgia of BITSians for their alma mater. Every Friday, a new contest was launched on social media-Talent Hunt, BITS ID contest, BITS Nostalgia contest, and the BITS One Liner Contest. It added to the frenzy of BITSians’ Day and received an overwhelming response. We were able to achieve a Facebook reach of 1 million and 0.4 million Twitter impressions this BITSians’ Day. Twitter especially, saw a huge jump in engagement by 940%. All BITSAA teams worked seamlessly with each other to make BITSians’ Day 2016 a resounding success!

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS Annual Update The scholarships team at BITSAA is dedicated to support and encourage students by managing alumni supported scholarships and awards. The scholarships cover tuition fees, international conference travel cost and graduate school application fees. The awards recognize the excellent work done by students in various fields of academics and entrepreneurship. The team aims to encourage the students to pursue excellence and ensure that no student at BITS Pilani is denied a holistic educational experience due to lack of funds.
1.BITSAA MERIT-CUM-NEED SCHOLARSHIPS The Merit-cum-need (MCN) scholarships are a category of scholarships offered by BITS to students from weaker financial background based on their academic performance and merit. Testimonials show that the students have greatly benefitted from the MCN scholarships, as a part of their financial burden is alleviated and they are able to concentrate better on their academics. This motivates us to look for more avenues for providing such scholarships to deserving students. Thanks to the generous donations from BITS alumni, BITSAA currently manages ten MCN scholarships helping 24 students in total in 2015-16. The table presents the list of winners of various MCNs in the academic year 2015-16.

We highlight some of the awards in detail below: PROF. SURESH RAMASWAMY AWARDS This award is to honor the memory and lasting impact of Professor Ramaswamy in the lives of students he mentored. It aims to institutionalize his legacy, and promote activities that embody his spirit and enthusiasm for nurturing students. A prize of Rs. 40,000 is awarded every year to a team of students (max. 6 students) from any department of Goa campus, in order to encourage and nurture them to work on a student project. The recipients of the award are chosen by a competitive peer-review process in the previous semester to the award. For the year 2016-17, proposals were judged on their innovation and feasibility. Winners(2016-17) 1.Sanket Deshpande (2014B5A3599G) 2.Lucky Kapoor (2014B5A3449G) 3.Pankaj Tiple (2013B4A7381G) 4.Vibhav Joshi (2013B1A1935G) About the Project Cosmic rays and comprising particles are of extreme importance to scientific pursuits involving high altitudes and space exploration. They have harmful effect on the human body and cause anomalies in electronic devices. In our experiment we aim to study the variation of the flux of cosmic rays with altitude. We know that these particles on interaction with the atoms and molecules initiate reactions which might be harmful to the overall system whether it might be a human body or an electronic device. Hence precautions are taken to ensure that such interactions are kept to a minimum. However, exposure to cosmic rays varies with altitude, so, shielding from these cosmic rays will have different requirements depending on the altitude. Our experiment strives to provide the data which will ensure that the shielding is done according to the altitude at which the device will be used. We intend to carry-out this assignment in near-space conditions. The aim is to develop a payload which will reach an altitude of 25kms above sea level and develop a cosmic ray flux versus altitude profile. R P VAID AWARDS The R. P. Vaid Award was instituted by the alumni in honour of Prof. Vaid. The first award coincided with Prof. Vaid's retirement. A cash prize of Rs. 5,000 is awarded to a deserving Chemical Engineering student, studying in Pilani campus. Winner(2016) : Srujan Reddy Yara (2013A1PS469P)

Prof. I J Nagrath retired as the Deputy Director after serving at BITS in educational, administrative and managerial roles. He is an excellent academician who taught many generations of BITSians and also the author of several well known books in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. 3. Graduate Application Scholarship The BITSAA Graduate Application Scholarship provides financial assistance to students for their applications to MS/PhD programs. This initiative is a small step towards ensuring that the financial burden of applications does not get in the way of the students for securing admission to an ambitious program at top universities. The cost of applying to graduate programs has risen considerably in the last few years. Even for people applying to just six universities, the cost of tests and application fees can be easily over 1000 USD. There are additional costs for getting transcripts and applying for visas. Since application process has become expensive, BITSians face greater financial pressure and are often discouraged from applying to many of the top universities. The idea is for BITS alumni to pay for a significant part of the costs, making the application process more affordable, and encouraging more students to apply to top schools. The number of applications for the Graduate Application scholarship increased significantly in the past year. Currently, BITSAA awards three graduate application scholarships of 500 USD each, in every academic year. BITS2Fitness Annual Update BITS2Fitness Team was constituted in March 2015 as an expansion of the BITS2Marathon Team, to promote healthy lifestyle among BITSians across the globe. The team did not want to restrict itself to just one sport “Running”. The BITS2Fitness team has successfully diversified itself to encompass a range of fitness activities and events, and has attracted a huge following of 1750 members on its Facebook group. The various initiatives and events organized by the team has lead to a jump in its Facebook engagement which are described ahead BURN A MILLION CALORIES (BAMC) A unique event-“Burn a Million Calories” was organized by the team from 6th to 19th November 2016, wherein BITSians’ across the globe came together to collectively to burn a million calories over 14 days. Each one was free to choose the exercise of their choice-walking, jogging, running, swimming, cycling or anything else.
The event featured an enthusiastic mascot, and three apps developed in-house from scratch viz. Android OS, iOS, and Web OS along with reliable backend supporting all three.
The event was well received, and the team received a lot of positive feedback and congratulatory messages from the participants. A list of winners from the event is given below:

OTHER INITIATIVES Exercise of the month This initiative aims to promote a healthy lifestyle by naming a particular activity as exercise of the month, disseminating information about it and encouraging BITSians to adopt it in their life. Meet BITSians in Sports: This is a series of interviews with BITSians who are significantly involved in sports and can serve as role models to inspire a health consciousness among the BITSian community at large by sharing. The interviews are shared regularly on the BITSAA blog, and the BITS2Fitness Facebook group.

BITS2MSPhD VISION • To help BITSians make a well informed decision on pursuing higher studies abroad. • Establish a community of BITSians (students and alumni) to engage in communication about graduate studies and programs. • Guiding BITSians on ways to improve their profiles and get better admits. BITS2MSPhD forum [1] http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bits2msphd [2] https://www.facebook.com/groups/bits2msphd The Yahoo group still serves as the primary communication forum between aspiring BITSians and BITSians currently at graduate school. The forum has more than 5000 members and increasing. The group contains 1000+ messages over the years on various aspects of the application process. There is also a Facebook group for similar discussions. The Facebook group has more than 3900 members of the BITS community. Of late, the Facebook has picked up in terms of messages and is poised to take over as the primary form of communication in some time. Campus Talks BITS2MSPhD team conducts one main campus talk before the application process starts, for MS or PhD to make sure the juniors on campus aspiring to study abroad have all the information and resources to guide them through the application process. Starting with selecting the right universities, we focus on all the major categories of the application like Statement Of Purpose, resume, recommendation letters and also, on the job prospects after graduation. This approach, we believe, gives an overall perspective to the ones who want to pursue higher studies. Campus talks were held at all 4 BITS campuses. We also try to address the students in their initial years at BITS by helping them prepare themselves best for getting an admit in their dream school. We hope to achieve this by talking about the opportunities one can make use of, while they are at BITS. In this regard, we talk mainly about internship opportunities in India and abroad. Monday Learning Articles A popular weekly article series for the graduate school applicants to throw light on all aspects of the graduate school application process. 15 Articles were published as a part of this and they can be accessed here.
26
Discipline Talks Apart from this main talk which covers all the general aspects of the application process, we also organized and planned many discipline-wise talks for the coming year. A pilot talk was conducted by Anirudh Wodeyar at the Pilani campus on Cognitive Neuroscience in April 2016. These talks concentrate more on a particular stream or discipline in collaboration with many BITS alumni who are interested in sharing their experiences and giving advice to the juniors. Thus, through this campus talk initiative, we try to reach as many students on campus as we can and provide them with reliable information before they make their decisions and to let them all be aware of the resources (BITS2MSPhD yahoo group, Facebook group, MLA series etc.) we provide as a part of BITS2MSPhD initiative, to help them with this whole process.

2016 Highlights The BEF has grown over the years (since its inception value of approx. $10,000 in April, 2003),via a combination of investment returns and new endowments, to $2,42,820 (12/31/2016 close) reflecting an average annualized return of +5.0% since inception.
29
• The BEF, which has investments diversified geographically and by asset class, generated a time-weighted return of +3.7%, during the year, for an unrealized gain of +$8,488. The returns were weighed down by the larger than normal short-term investments owing to the nature of a couple of new initiatives as described above. The equity-only return in the portfolio was +6.8% in 2016, if one were to adjust for the cash and short-term investments, and fixed income investments in the BEF. • YTD 2017, as of March 31, we are chugging along with the BEF up +3.5% for an unrealized investment gain of ~$8,300, before disbursements. • Since inception in April 2003 through 12/31/16, the BEF generated an average return of 5.0% p.a. • During the year, the rupee depreciated 2.7% from 66.2/ USD on Dec 31, 2015 to 67.97/USD on Dec 31, 2016. The academic year 2016-2017 saw an increase in tuition to the tune of +8.4% (from Rs. 2.00 Lakhs p.a. to Rs. 2.27 Lakhs p.a.), a rise in our obligations tied to tuition fees, offset by the depreciation in INR/USD exchange rates. • We continue to remain in shape to meet our current and future obligations. Two new Endowments came into effect in 2016, as follows: 83 Batch-Anjali Seth Initiativeand SuRa Award and contributions towards these to the tune of $20,090 were made in 2016.
Publication of Investment Policy Statements All BIC’s/BEF’s activities (including principles and parameters guiding these actions) and obligations are published in detail via periodic reports that are available online at www.bitsaa.org under the endowments section.
