Concept I am interested in the relationship between emotion and space. Human being’s emotion can give a definition to a certain place. Is the space capable to bring emtions to people, too?

Concept -Movie Emotion SectionBefore creating a space or a city with a specific emotion and evoking certain memories of people, I try to study “the emotion” first. What is the definition of emotion? How is the relationship between people and their emotions? How to transform the abstract feeling into three-dimensional space? To understand that, I start a series of analyses about transforming the emotions from a movie into a two-dimensional section. I choose two movies, <Pan’s Labyrinth> and <Fargo>, which are more complicated in the composition of emotion. I select the specific clips which contain stronger or more contrastive emotions, then draw a section with certain rules. There come two different sections. This analysis is quite experimental, but something interesting does happen from the abstract feeling to a physical drawing with two-dimensional space.

Emotional Space Take few precedents to do the case study of “emotional space”. To understand what kind of architecture contains the space which I call “emotional space”, and how to form an emotional space.

Emotional Space -Emotional SpacePeople in the big city always become cold and detached to each other. For me, a city without feelings will be nothing but a big machine. It is horrible for human being to live in a machine and behave like a robot. Therefore, my idea is to build a building of emotion, like a memory museum, for the cold city and detached city people. People who come to the building could feel the emotion the space provides, or further more, create their own emotion based on their memory. Different materials or the change of light could stimulate people to remember buried memories in their brains deeply and help them find back the emotions they lost a long time ago.

-PrecedentsI chose three precedents to study the relationship between architecture and emotion, they are Diana Memorial Fountain, The Brion Tomb, and Church of Light. The main idea of my ambition is searching memories in the city and evoking emotions of people. The city is growing everyday, and people in the city become colder and colder because they all dedicate to pursue material satisfaction, and ignore the important of emotion. That is the reason I found it is important to find back our emotions.

City as a Journey Use King’s Cross, the centre of London and the single node in Europe to which the most people can reach within a two-hour period, as the starting point for mapping exercise to construct my own personal journeys within the capital. The aim of this project is to understand the city as a dynamic construct.

City as a Journey -Mapping the CityThe definition of the centre of London has been a shifting target over the centuries, but today it is perhaps fairest to label King’s Cross the true centre of London. Not only does it connect to the tube and bus network, but to Paris also. As the oldest means of getting around, walking has historically had primacy as an experience. This project is a process to help place the design in its urban context. During the journey, I was pedestrian, commuter, or adventurer, and recorded as much information as I could sense from the environment.

City as a Journey -The TranscriptsInspired by Bernard Tschumi’s “The Manhattan Transcripts”, along the route I record the location I stopped, the scene which got my attention, and the movements happened here. Movement is an essential feature of the modern metropolis, therefore it is crucial to analyze the movements to understand the city.

City in a Building Design an architecture which based on the potential of the city and the comprehension of the designer. Through this abstract project to reflect the personal perspectives and interests to the city.

City in a Building -Princess Diana Memory PavilionIn the “City in a Building” project, I take the iconic character, Princess Diana, as a subject of study and create ten spaces which are based on different specific emotions at specific moment in her life, I call them “The Memory Pavilion”. The ten emotions are Insecure, Ecstatic, Kind, Depressed, Lovestruck, Respected, Shocked, Sad, Complicated, and Hopeful. Each space could contain 10 to 20 people, and they will be used as exhibition venue, museum, cafe, or playground, as I intend to make activities happen in these spaces and build a stronger connection between the buildings and the environment. I used various forms, solid or void, and the change of light, to create these emotional spaces. The space is aimed to provide some specific emotions to the users.

1969

Insecure Princess Diana’s parents were divorced in 1969 and had a messy battle of custody after the divorce. This event left Diana an emotional scar deeply.

29.Jul.1981

Ecstatic The wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles took place on 29 July 1981 before 3,500 invited guests and 1 billion television viewers around the world.

1987

Kind Princess Diana was the first well-known celebrity to be photographed with a victim of AIDS during the period when most people still believed that AIDS will be infected by contact.

28.Aug.1996

Depressed During the early 1990s, the marriage fell apart. After a lot of scandal being reported by world media, Princess Diana and Prince Charles were divorced on 28 August 1996.

1994-1997

Lovestruck Reportedly, the respected heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan is “the love of her life”. But the whole romance still keeps mysterious until now because Khan never reveals a word to the public.

20

Jan.1997

Respected In January 1997, pictures of the Princess Diana touring an Angolan minefield in a ballistic helmet and flak jacket were seen worldwide. She helped pave the way towards a global ban on landmines.

31.Aug.1997

Shocked On 31 Aug 1997, Princess Diana was fatally injured in a car crash in Paris because of the chasing of paparazzi, which also caused the death of her then boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed.

6.Sep.1997

Sad Princess Diana’s funeral took palce in Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997. People left public offerings of flowers, candles, cards and personal messages outside her previous residence, Kensington Palace, for many months.

4.Apr.2005

Complicated On 4 April 2005, Prince Charles and Camilla have finally become husband and wife after more than 30 years since their romance first began.

2011

Hopeful Prince William and Kate are engaged and will marry in 2011. The couple showed the engagement ring, which belonged to Princess Diana, to the public.

Masterplan Based on the studying projects I did previously, I propose a masterplan of my design, Memory Pavilion. The Memory Pavilion is located at Hyde Park. It is composed of a series of buildings which show the life of Princess Diana in the architectural aspect.

Kensington Gardens - The Queen’s Gardens Kensington Gardens began life as a Kings playground but it was three royal women who created the elegant landscape we still enjoy today.

Kensington Gardens nowadays

1689 Queen Mary Queen Mary and King William bought Nottingham House and renamed it Kensington Palace as their main home in London. Mary created the garden with Dutch style for William who came from Holland. 1702 Queen Anne Queen Anne took 30 acres from Hyde Park and asked her landscape designer, Henry Wise and George London, to create an English-style garden. Anne also added the Orangery next Kensington Palace. 1728 Queen Caroline Queen Caroline took 300 acres from Hyde Park and employed Charles Bridgeman to produce a new design. Bridgeman dug Round Pound in front of Kensington Palace. Caroline and Bridgeman also dammed the Westbourne Stream to create a natural-loking lake called the Long Water. Cake Model Bake a cake site model to present the celebrating atmosphere by the colour and smell of the real cake. The idea refers to the worldwide famous royal wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in the past, and the wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate nowadays. This cake model indicates the concept of my project, the memorable moments, in a different way.
