Thankful for wise leadership

In my family, we will all gather together this Thursday for the traditional feast. One thing in particular that we will enjoy is hearing stories and experiences of the past from my in-laws as well as my mom and dad. Fun filled wisdom that can only come with gray hair.

This issue of Greater Fayetteville Business Journal takes time to reflect on this kind of applied knowledge. We’ve interviewed some retired businesspeople who have pearls of wisdom for all of us. I’m sure you will enjoy reading their answers to our questions in the pages ahead.

That brings me to my own ex perience of receiving advice and direction. My dad has been a great mentor of mine over the years. His career in electronics and communi cations spanned over 57 years until his retirement in 2017. An Air Force Veteran and the owner and leader of four different businesses, his advice has been lived, and still rings true to my ears today. Here are some of his words of wisdom.

It’s not what you can do, but it’s what others are willing to do. Dad recognized the accom plishments of others before his own. He did not subscribe to the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality that we see quite often today. But he was quick to give credit where it was deserved. His team of employees were loyal and hardworking. He knew any success he had, was due in large part to their willingness to do their best.

It’s not what you expect, it’s what you inspect. This might sound a bit micro-managerial in today’s business world, but it was not then nor is it now. Dad’s focus was about accountability and quality control. He believed that if you were going to do some thing, you should do it the right way and part of his job was to periodically test this expectation.

The bottom line. My dad would use these three words a lot, most often to crystallize a point, and it worked to keep his team fo cused on what was most import ant to our mission.

Later in my dad’s business career, he found faith in Jesus. It reinforced many of these principles but also changed him in how he delivered his advice, adding his newfound faith to the mixture of hard work. His favorite verse is Colossians 3:23. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.”

My dad is still actively living out his faith today. Teaching his family how to grow old and stay on mission. That’s the bottom line!

God bless you and yours!

Army Reserve. Following his military service, Keen held the office of Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development for the North Carolina Community College System for five years. He also worked as a business and industry development manager for the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, with positions as both a faculty member and educational leader at the community college and university levels.

Dr. Keen met his future successor Dr. Mark Sorrells shortly after arriving in North Carolina, and even before the two began working together at FTCC they worked together to achieve different goals.

“I think we met my second day in the state of North Carolina when I was in a different category,” recalled Keen. “I was the vice president for Economic and Workforce Development at the system office, and I was in charge of all the workforce development and continuing education activities all over the state; 58 colleges. We were working on a project of locating a company to North Carolina and Mark and I met, and so we started off very early on my arrival to North Carolina, working in concert with each other he had worked on a philanthropic organization, the Golden LEAF Foundation, and I work for the North Carolina Community Colleges and, collectively he could do things I couldn't do and I could do things he couldn't do, and so we complimented each other quite well.”

A few years later in January of 2019, Sorrells joined the FTCC staff as the Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Services. His arrival coincided with changes to college accreditation criteria, and Sorrells would go on to play a key role in keeping the college in line with standards set by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

“I think having worked with Dr. Keen before, I knew the quality of his leadership. I think he was right, we complemented each other very well. We learned to work together, and we knew each other well enough we built a level of trust. So, when I got here, one of the first things, we were right in the middle of our SACS re-accreditation, which is a big deal,” recalled Sorrells.

Sorrells said he joined a team of FTCC committee members, and the team was able to come together to get the job done.

“We recognized very quickly

that we had made the progress, we made some strategic decisions. We rebalanced the group and did some storming, forming and norming and identified very quickly the order of priority and one of the major areas that trips people up is the assessment standards,” said Sorrells.

Over the past four years, Dr. Keen and Dr. Sorrells have both worked together to help accomplish goals to push the college forward. The College has seen expanding opportunities in healthcare by partnering with local healthcare providers such as Cape Fear Valley and Womack Army Hospital, maintaining programs to help provide educated and capable members of the workforce and remaining a military friendly school are some of the improvements that have been achieved by FTCC in the post pandemic world.

“And we have example after example, after example of where we do that on a daily basis with our teams, so I think our capacity to work together, to listen to each other to stim ulate each other in terms of where we need to be going as an institution and as a people and to continually refine our systems and our people and their ability to perform has been very, very significant,” said Keen.

Keen said that one of the main reasons he feels ready to move on from his presidency is because he has a solid successor in place who he feels will continue to improve and progress with FTCC.

“My objective from the time I got here was create a succession plan. Whenever if I decided leave after a year or 15 years or 10 years that there be some people in the in the supply chain, if you will, that could come in and do a good job and carry on which is exactly what we've been able to demonstrate,” said Keen. “So, I'm quite proud. That relationship it's not only technical competence that you have to look at, but it's an understanding of what is needed that goes well beyond just the traditional educational realm and where we are in community college.”

Now, Keen said that come January he will be getting some well-deserved rest and relaxation and turn his attention to spending quality time traveling with his wife and family, writing, and stopping to smell the roses.

“I have been blessed in my lifetime in so many ways. I can't begin to count them all. But one of the true blessings I've had is my wife and my family, and they have done

everything to support me over the years.” said Keen. “I’ve probably run roughshod in some cases being too busy to do this or that and I've had to arrange times with them around schedules and so forth and so on. So, my first my first requirement is going to be spend time and dedicate my time to my wife.

After being chosen following a nationwide search launched in early 2022, Dr. Sorrells will be FTCC’s fifth president in the history of the college which was founded in 1961.

Prior to joining the College in 2019, Sorrells began his career as a Business Administration Instructor at Haywood Community College in 1985. Over the next few decades, he would continue to be promoted to other positions of leadership and responsibility including serving as Executive Director of North Carolina REAL Enterprises, and later moving on to the Golden LEAF Foundation Inc. holding the position as the Senior Vice President for 14 years. Now Sorrells said his time at the College and with Dr. Keen has prepared his for the next step in his career.

“Well, part of it is having a good mentor, and Dr. Keen has been a wonderful, wonderful mentor. He's guided, he's trusted, he's challenged me on a lot of things; but he's also been willing to take a risk, and as long as that is a managed and calculated strategy going forward,” said Sorrells. “And so, I couldn't have done it without him, and I will tell you, I when I left philanthropy, I been a finalist for a president's position years earlier in a small college. And I talked with my wife, my best friend, and we were plotting out, you know, what's next? What's that next step, that last step in the career?”

Sorrells said he and his wife discussed the possibility of applying at other small colleges and also achieving a president role, but instead decided to put his faith into Dr. Keen and the staff and students at FTCC.

“I chose to take that parallel move. Because I knew him, I trusted him. And I knew that if I wanted to reach my goal, he was going to be a key to preparing me for that opportunity. It was the best career move I've ever made.”

Dr. Sorrells will begin his tenure as president beginning Jan 1, 2023. He said he is ready to move forward while also upholding Keen’s legacy.

MU Nursing Student speaks at United Nations Headquarters

LADIBA SAID NAFE, an international student in Methodist University’s Nursing Program, was asked to speak to the UN about the ongoing conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front over the Western Sahara territory in October.

“I was invited by Western Sahara’s representative in the UN,” Said Nafe shared in a press release. “He happens to know that I’m studying at Methodist University and knows I’m very passionate about the case back home. I had to make a quick decision on whether to speak, and I’m glad I did.”

people have been living in Algerian refugee camps for nearly half a century due to political conflicts.

Growing up in the refugee camps, Said Nafe eventually earned a scholarship to the United World College’s International Baccalaureate program in Norway – a twoyear educational program primarily for teenage international students. Said Nafe worked hard to not only pass her classes, but also to learn English so she could attend a college or university in the United States.

“When I passed the program, I decided to apply to Methodist University,” shared Said Nafe in a press release. “Not only did MU offer great scholarships for international students, but I heard a lot of good things about the University from other international students.”

Said Nafe is on track to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. But in the midst of a demanding program like Nursing, Said Nafe is finding ways to prove herself outside of the classroom. After graduating in May, Nafe plans to gain experience as a nurse. But eventually, she hopes to give back to her people back home.

She is also a member of several professional organizations including The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners and The Pain Society of The Carolinas.

With over 15 years of clinical experience, Graham stated in a press release that it was an easy decision choosing to continue her professional career with PMC saying, “PMC is a natural choice for me, as that is who I chose to assist me with my own health care.” Graham continued, “I believe in their commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care.”

PMC’s Primary Care department providers are experts in promoting healthy living, disease prevention, health maintenance, treatment of acute and chronic illnesses and more. Graham has a passion for taking care of people and promotes a collaborative environment when caring for patients to help them achieve their best possible health and wellness.

Said Nafe’s plea to remove Western Sahara from the United Nations’ list of non-self-governing territories was heard by hundreds of officials inside the UN Headquarters.

“I simply asked UN officials to call the people at the refugee camps to know about our situation,” said Said Nafe in a press release. “But afterwards, the chair of the UN meeting said he was impressed with my strong words and the passion I brought forward.”

UNCP Rocket Team to compete in NASA Student Launch Challenge

The team, led by captains Caleb Locklear and Hector Felix, features 25 members, and has been competing in the First Nations Launch national rocket competition since 2018.

“Last year, we began with three team members and ended with eight, but I guess winning prize money and awards changed that,” shared physics professor and team advisor Dr. Steven Singletary in a press release. “This year, we have 25 participants,

with more students asking daily if they can participate.”

UNCP has a full NASA team, an FNL team, a social media team, a safety team, and a STEAM outreach team. They will also compete next year at the First Nations Launch competition in Wisconsin.

Students are currently working on the design and construction phase of a high-powered rocket capable of flying to an altitude between 4,000 and 6,000 feet.

Competition experiences have led to collaborations and networking

with NASA engineers and major aerospace corporations such as Blue Origin and Lockheed Martin.

“They get to see someone who has gone through the process they are going through and what the end state can look like,” Singletary said in a press release. “It makes them want to work harder in their classes to be like the people they have met. I'm excited about both teams, as I think they will perform well. This is big because it proves that UNCP students can compete with the big boys.”

Locklear, who is enrolled in UNCP's 3+2 dual engineering degree program, said the competitions provide a way to connect with a variety of engineers within the field of aerospace.

“It allows students to be set in a professional, career-related environment on campus to complete our objectives. Although I didn't have aerospace engineering in mind, participating in these competitions has helped me understand what engineers must do concerning designing, building, and writing reports,” Locklear said in a press release.

INNOVATION ECONOMY

Tickets are on sale now for the final Power Breakfast of 2022.

Our Innovation Economy

GUESTS ARE INVITED TO NETWORK, LEARN AND GROW AS BUSINESS LEADERS

The Greater Fayetteville Business Journal is gearing up for the final Power Breakfast of 2022. The upcoming sixth quarterly Power Breakfast taking place on Dec. 1 at Fayetteville State University will focus on “Our Innovation Economy,” giving a platform to the businesses and people in the community whose ideas help move the economy forward.

With the Fayetteville region seeing significant growth in new businesses and business expansion, three panelists will engage in thoughtful discourse about what’s driving the latest economic trends, what’s holding us back from further growth and how our innovation economy can fuel further job creation in the future.

PANELISTS FOR THE POWER BREAKFAST INCLUDE:

FRED SURGEON has served in the capacity of Chief Executive Officer since February 2006. He is the Founder of Surgeon & Associates, Inc., and the founder of several other LLCs, and businesses throughout the Fayetteville area. At an early

age, the Surgeon family noticed Fred possessed a special gift which has developed him into the CEO that he is today: the gift of entrepreneurship. He always had a love for people and for making a difference in their lives.

JUSTIN HEMBREE is a North Carolina native originally from Mitchell County. Hembree currently serves as Executive Director of Mid-Carolina Regional Council. Mid-Carolina Regional Council is a multicounty local government planning, economic development, and human services organization that serves three counties in southeastern North Carolina. Hembree has over 20 years of professional public service experience at various levels of government management including serving as County Manager of Mitchell County, Assistant County Manager and Interim County Manager of Henderson County, and Town Manager of Taylorsville, NC. Before joining Mid-Carolina, Hembree served as Executive Director of the Land of Sky Regional Council based in Asheville, NC.

JAMES FREEMAN is the founder and president of Emerging Technology Institute (ETI), an integration hub for the Department of Defense. ETI is located 28 miles south of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and operates a Force Modernization Technology Range. They test drones, robots, AI, and data analytics with a focus on Unmanned Aerial Systems and Counter UAS. Through ETI, Freeman has built a strong collaborative connection between academia, industry and local partnerships that help future technology integrations with the Department of Defense. His dedication has deeply impacted Robeson County, from STEM projects in public schools to internships and apprenticeships with universities, he is committed to uplifting his community.

“I wanted to make sure that we had both the private and the public sector covered,” said Greater Fayetteville Business Journal Publisher Marty Cayton. “Justin represents the public sector, and then, of course, Fred represents the private sector very well. James is really a good

The final power breakfast will be held in the Rudolph Jones Student Center at FSU. The event will be returning just over a year after FSU hosted the second ever Power Breakfast in November of 2021.

“I just can't say enough about Chancellor Allison and what he's done for our community and how he's reaching out to different aspects of our community, the business aspect being a significant factor with the new Entrepreneurial and Business HUB that they've created is just a huge step forward for our business community,” said Cayton.

“I'm just looking forward to seeing all of the other things that we as a business community can do together because of that. It's also a great place to have our power breakfast, and I'm thankful that they're willing to have us back.

Tickets are going fast but are still available for the Power Breakfast; you can order them online at fayettevillepowerbreakfast.com.

Leaders sharing their wisdom

West has been an active member of the community serving on 28 boards, Associations, Commissions and more.

GFBJ: What are you up to these days?

GFBJ: What is one thing you’ve enjoyed most over the course of your career?

West graduated from Stedman High school where he met his wife of 55 years, Iris West. After graduating with Methodist University in 1969, West entered the world of insurance by starting his first position at Metropolitan Life as a sales manager in 1970 and continued with the position until 1975. West went on to buy Metropolitan Life and turn it into West Insurance which expanded to three locations between 1975 and 1992. In 1992, West Insurance merged with BB&T, now Truist, and he saw another transition in his career, becoming Senior Vice President of BB&T Insurance where he remained from 1992 until he retired in 2019.

West has helped to share his nearly 50 years of insurance experience by speaking at the National Insurance Convention, joining the National Faculty of Certified Insurance Counselors, and becoming a Continuing Education Instructor for the NC. Dept. of Insurance.

Arecognizable name and a long-time Fayetteville resident, Bill West is a businessman that can’t be stopped even in retirement. With a career in insurance spanning from 1970 to 2019,

Now after retiring, West is still an active member of the community and continues to find ways to serve and support his clients outside of the world of insurance.

WEST: I’ve been retired now for almost four years, I’m just as busy as I always was it’s just a different kind of busy. And the big difference is, now I can do it on my schedule rather than someone else’s. So that makes it good from that point of view but today I'm very involved in church work, also very involved in my family. With my three children and their spouses and eight grandchildren, there's always a birthday or a dance recital or a ball game or some event that you need to participate in. So, I've been very, very blessed to be able to do that today now at retirement when I didn’t before. I have a subsidiary business, West Rentals, we handle various residential rental properties and commercial rental properties, I’ve had that for years and basically manage residential and commercial rental property, so that has kept me busy from a business point of view. That matched up with the family life and the church life and the community life. Today, I’ve retired from most of these boards and all but I’m still active with the Methodist University Trustee Board and I’m also president of the Methodist University Development Corporation.

WEST: The people, absolutely the people. And the people may be clients, they may be even competitors, friends, acquaintances you come within contact with, but the people. And in retirement the thing that I miss the most is the people. I don't particularly miss the day-to-day operations, even though I enjoyed that, it was what I did all the life, but I do miss my clients. And I still got clients all over North, South Carolina I see a lot of times just drop in and say hello, you know, carrying some donuts, whatever when I'm in the areas.

GFBJ: Any golden nuggets of wisdom you would like to share?

WEST: Whatever your vocation, whatever it is, try to educate yourself to that to where you know what you’re doing, be honest with your clients and just plain old work hard. You know, I don't have any apologies, but over my career, I've worked hard, but I enjoyed it, it’s what I wanted to do. It’s an age-old adage but, put your client first but that's the truth. Put what’s right for your client first and you get in here and you work hard, and you know what you're doing.

New hotel construction

PINKERTON & LAWS HAS TWO PROJECTS IN THE WORKS COMING TO FAYETTEVILLE AND LUMBERTON

Pinkerton & Laws has a new project under construction as progress continues on a new Home2 Suites hotel in Fayetteville on Ramsey Street.

The company is currently working on the installation of the roofing system, exterior envelope system and installation of MEP rough-ins. It's scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of next year. When completed this property will be a four-story hotel featuring 109 guest rooms.

This is Pinkerton & Laws’ third construction project in Fayetteville.

Their two previous projects were for the same client who has seen great success running hotels in the Fayetteville area.

“I can tell you the hotels we've built up there and talking to the owner have done phenomenal...it's a great town, great little town, charming, and the people there have been really accommodating and great to work with,” shared Vice President of Pinkerton & Laws Grant Ward.

Pinkerton & Laws will also be building a TownePlace Suites hotel by Marriott in Lumberton, NC. This construction project is for a repeat client who is a developer based out of Atlanta.

The hotel will sit on two-acres of land and stand five stories tall with

107-units. Construction is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter this year. The anticipated completion period for the hotel is the first quarter of 2024.

Both the Fayetteville site and the Lumberton site are about 55,000 square feet according to Ward. Ward also confirmed that both hotels are efficient, extended stay brands.

Pinkerton & Laws is a Southeast Regional company conducting work up and down the eastern seaboard. According to their website, Pinkerton & Laws is nationally recognized as a leader in “multi-unit” construction.

Leaders sharing their wisdom

Brooks has a lifetime of service to the community including holding several leadership roles including the Pembroke Gospel Chapel, Lumbee Guaranty Bank, and the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He established the Brenda B. Brooks Distinguished Professorship at UNC-Pembroke in honor of his late wife, as well as the Howard Brooks Endowed Scholarship at Medical University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy.

Mr. Brooks was also given North Carolina’s greatest individual distinction as the first inductee into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2017.

Now, after retiring, Howard Brooks has passed the torch to his son Tim Brooks who has taken on the role of President of HealthKeeperz.

GFBJ: What are you up to these days?

The town of Pembroke, North Carolina is familiar with the name Howard Brooks. For more than 50 years, Mr. Brooks has been serving the healthcare needs of members of the Pembroke community and beyond. The Founder of what is today known as HealthKeeperz, Brooks began his extensive career in healthcare back in the 1960’s after he graduated from what is now known as the Medical University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy in 1966. Brooks opened a hometown pharmacy originally called the Pembroke Drug Center on West Third St. in Pembroke in 1967, and with the help of a large community base in the western part of Robeson County, the drug store was able to add other healthcare disciplines such as a personal care program, which allowed 300 patients to receive in home care, a medical equipment department, and expand their medical team and leadership. Throughout it all, Brooks has worked to ensure that HealthKeeperz continues to give the company’s patients higher quality of life, dignity, and the clinical excellence they deserve, while also representing the Love of God, love of family, and love of community.

BROOKS: What we do now is, we have two bible studies during the week and church activities most days and that’s mostly what we do, and we enjoy doing that. Here in Fayetteville, we go down to the Lumber River. We’ve got a boat, but we don’t fish. We like to eat fish, but we don’t do much catching them.

GFBJ: What is one thing you’ve enjoyed most over the course of your career?

BROOKS: The most satisfying thing, we have patients who come up and now say ‘You extended credit to my parents when they couldn’t pay.’ That was when they were children and they remember how much they needed it back then, and now we have them come to me and say ‘Well, you did so and so for us,’ and it’s something that I don’t even remember. And it’s those testimonies, and those kinds of things just make your day.

GFBJ: Any golden nuggets of wisdom you would like to share?

BROOKS: Just do what your heart is leading you to do, whatever your vocation may be.

Pat Corso served as the president of Pinehurst Resort and Country Club for 17 years. After this he started his own business. He and three other people he’d worked with in Pinehurst ran PGA National in Florida and the Mount Washington resort in New Hampshire. He then came back to the Fayetteville area and opened several Dunkin Donuts franchise locations. He and his business partners ended up with 10 stores and sold them about a year and a half ago. He also served as the economic developer for Partners in Progress, in Moore County.

GFBJ: What are you up to these days?

CORSO: Well, I'm retired. I am busy with grandchildren. I’m still a trustee at University of North Carolina at Pembroke—this is my eighth year— and I chaired it for two years. So, I've been busy with that. That's been great, and we travel, you know my wife and I travel, so between traveling, UNCP, some volunteer work and we have a cottage in Michigan, that's where I came from originally was Northern Michigan, and a resort destination up there in Traverse

City so we go back up there in the summers we love it here just July and August aren’t our favorite in the heat, but that's what I do you know it's great, really. I mean, I'm 72 and enjoying life.

GFBJ: What did you enjoy most about your career?

CORSO: The highlight really was reestablishing Pinehurst as a premier American golf destination, really positioning it as the cradle of American golf and all that went with that— physical restoration, golf courses, hotels, a spa and also the reputation which was a result of major championships that have been played there during that era. So, I was in the right place at the right time. I was lucky that, you know, things frankly couldn't have been worse. So that sometimes is the best opportunity, when things are really struggling, and it was. But today, you know few remember that nor should they. Today we look at Pinehurst as this iconic golf destination.

GFBJ: Any golden nuggets of wisdom to share?

CORSO: Well, it may sound a bit trite, but it's true, it's like with Pinehurst, never give up. No one ever would have thought we could have hosted a US Open Championship. It was not in the cards. It just wasn't.

We started the journey, and we decided that if we never achieved the ultimate goal, a lot of good things will happen along the way. So, we never lost our perspective on what we were trying to do…I think that the key thing is keeping your perspective. Particularly when others or other things are going on around you. You have to kind of, you know, we used to call it putting the blinders on like, if you know horse racing at all, you know, they put blinders on the horses so they can't see the crowd, they can't see the other horses, they can't be distracted. That's what you have to do, in my opinion, if you have a goal in mind, an objective in mind, put on the blinders, stay focused and don't

Computerized Tomography Scanner

CAPE FEAR VALLEY HEALTH UNVEILS A NEW TOOL FOR NEUROSURGEONS

New, cutting-edge technology at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center has made precision in neurosurgery the name of the game.

Cape Fear Valley has recently introduced a Airo TruCT scanner, a state-of-the-art game-changer when performing surgery in the operating room. Computerized Tomography, or CT, scans are a method of making multiple X-ray images of the body or parts of the body. The new scanner provides diagnostic-quality CT images of patients’ brains and spines with unprecedented precision.

“Let's say you were a neurosurgeon, and you wanted to access some part of the patient's brain or spine to do some kind of intervention,” said Director of Neurosurgery at Cape Fear Valley Charles Haworth, M.D. “Once you got there, you could do a much better job if you were in the right place or knew exactly how to get there.”

The scanner’s portability, Haworth said, is a huge plus.

“We're able to do things with confidence now that we weren't able to do even just a few years ago,” he said. “So, it's all right there. We don't use it for every surgery that we do, but by having it portable, we can wheel it into the room. It's much smaller than a conventional CT scanner.”

Haworth used an example of a broken spine procedure where different instruments can help the spine heal in the right place.

“Well, even just sometimes putting the retractors in the spine can make it bob around, or move, or shift because it's broken,” he said. “We can scan you the right way, the way you were at that time. We can recheck our position and correct the position of the spine. The scanner improves the accuracy tremendously.”

Haworth praised the scanner for its increased ease of use. Additionally, he said, the new equipment allows for added patient safety.

“For the first time we can image the brain during surgery. Let's say for example you had a blood clot in your brain, and we wanted to go in there and take it out urgently, but maybe it was kind of deeper, hiding behind some important structures,” Haworth said. “And there's different ways to get to it. We could scan you on the table and then decide what would be

the safest way to get to it.”

Haworth said the added efficien cy is also a significant boon to both medical personnel and patients alike. Using an example, Haworth said that in prior instances of patients dealing with blood clots, patients would have to return for additional scans before

Neurosurgeons and other medical personnel in the operating room also stand to benefit from the new scanner’s increased safety measures.

“One of the things that [the scanner] also did for me was to cut down on the amount of radiation I was getting,” Haworth said. “When I was using a regular X-ray, or fluoroscopy, I was getting a lot of radiation and so were the people that were working with me.”

The new scanner offers a competitive edge to Cape Fear Valley, Haworth said.

“Not all of the hospitals have this. Even some of the bigger hospitals in the Triangle may not have the latest iteration of this device,” Haworth said. “Because we got ours recently, we got the newest version so to speak. The other thing is that we were hoping that as the manufacturer and the vendors come out with other updates to this, there may be things like robotics that we can add onto the scanner.”

done, it would be nice for you to get that done in your own community,” Haworth said. “As a patient, you want to have the reassurance that surgeons and physicians will do a good job. You want to make sure that it's done with some sort of sophistication and safety. I think that if we can assure people of this, the margin of safety will be what people expect.”

Haworth believes the improvements to procedures brought on by the new scanner will continue to build trust between community and medical staff.

“I’d like to think people are finding out that not only do we have good physicians and personal physicians, but that we're using technology daily to do an excellent job and lower the risk of complications and problems,” he said.

In the end, the new upgrades to the hospital’s equipment could also prove to be cost-effective.

being sent to a recovery room or the intensive care unit. The new equip ment allows for quick rescans to look for postoperative complications.

Not only does the new scanner provide a technological advantage, but it also brings in added convenience for patients.

“I think it makes us competitive, but it is also my impression that if you wanted to have a procedure

“I can assure you that by making smaller incisions, resulting in no nerve injuries and causing less trauma to the muscle, this is saving the hospital system a fortune in terms of injuries,” Haworth said.
