PS4 and Xbox One shine but physical gaming sales drop to £2.1bn in 2015 New console sales hit 5.5m O Five games top 1m units O Warner is third biggest publisher by Christopher Dring PS4 and Xbox One UK game sales shot up by over 50 per cent in 2015. GfK’s latest stats reveal significant growth for the new consoles. However, the overall UK physical games market is down by eight per cent, dropping from £2.294bn in 2014 to £2.1bn last year. That number includes all game, console and accessory sales. The drop in performance is almost entirely down to falling hardware sales. PS4 and Xbox One were also sold for a lower price, impacting the revenue figures. Retail reports say that there are now around 5.5m gamers in the UK that own either a PS4 or Xbox One. Xbox One software unit sales rose 51.4 per cent in 2015 year-on-year
(and 38.2 per cent in revenue). PS4 game sales increased by 53.4 per cent (40.2 per cent in revenue). Four boxed games sold over 1m units in 2015 – FIFA 16, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront. And another practically sold a million – GTA V shifted 999,000 units in boxes. There was also huge growth for accessories, with £495.6m (a 15 per cent increase) made from toys-to-life products, controllers, headsets and points cards. It was a major 12 months for Warner Bros, too. The firm was the third biggest publisher last year – in terms of units and value – thanks to the success of its LEGO titles, as well as Batman: Arkham Knight. Retail dismayed by £500 Oculus Rift THE Oculus Rift is too expensive and lacking in must-have games, UK stores have warned. But VR is an exciting new area for the global games market and, in time, Oculus Rift could still emerge as the market leader. MCV contacted leading games stores following the news that the first Oculus Rift units would arrive at the end of March for £500 including an Xbox One controller and two games: EVE Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale. “It’s too expensive. We were expecting £299, maximum,” said

products that weren’t easily accessible by the vast majority of gamers. Another commentator believes that it was ‘weird’ to launch the Rift without the Oculus Touch controller. However, stores remain optimistic about the prospects of VR. “It is very exciting and new,” said another games boss. “PlayStation VR is in the strongest position, as it has the momentum of the PS4 and a promising line-up. “But Oculus Rift, given a bit of time, could be the premium VR experience of choice.”

New-look Curve eyes more acquisitions in bid to rejuvenate UK publishing scene “It is a shame that there isn’t a big British games publisher anymore,” says new boss Dominic Wheatley by Christopher Dring THE new owner of UK publisher Curve says it is ‘absolutely’ open to further mergers and acquisitions. Curve was acquired by Kujuowner The Catalis Group last week. Kuju and Curve were then merged to form a new business: Curve Digital Entertainment. The firm’s new boss Dominic Wheatley - the co-founder of Eidos – says it is a ‘shame’ about the lack of great British games publishers. And is open to merging and acquiring other studios in an effort to create a new British publishing powerhouse. “We are not trying to recreate things from the past necessarily,” Wheatley, who was part of the Britsoft movement in the 1990s told MCV. “But the link is that there isn’t really a big British publisher anymore, and I think that is a shame. “It is a challenge in a way, and it is a little bit a case of picking up the flag and saying: ‘Come on, let’s try and do something that employs people here and gives creatives

a chance to get their products marketed from a company that will make decisions right here in the UK’. We don’t have to ask Japan or San Francisco for sign off, we are right here and able. Let’s band together.”
In terms of more acquisitions, he said: “If there was another company, particularly a developer, who wanted to join up and be part of the team, we would certainly look at that. We’re a publicly
quoted company, they could merge themselves with us and know that they have a great home from the publishing side, while they get on with the development. We’re absolutely up for that. “But the big charge we are making is in nurturing talent; build their skills and products overtime, so that they become stars. We are already doing that in a small way with Kuju, because we did this thing called Kuju Startup Fund, and we raised £350,000 - not a great deal of money - via crowdfunding. It was an experiment, and we wanted to see how the model worked. We have bagged three indie games and we are going to publish those.”

nDreams targets virtual reality publishing sector
WARNER BROS has revealed that LEGO Marvel Super Heroes has sold over 1m units in the UK. Its statement comes ahead of the upcoming LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, which arrives on January 29th. Marvel Super Heroes was the second-largest LEGO launch to-date, with 84,400 units. The only bigger launch was 2008’s LEGO Indiana Jones – which wasn’t published by Warner. “The game’s appeal is a unique blend of clever humour
VIRTUAL reality studio nDreams wants to release other developers’ VR games. The firm has only published its own products so far, but now CEO Patrick O’Luanaigh wants nDreams to become the Team17 or Curve of the VR space. “We are now looking for thirdparty titles,” O’Luanaigh said. “We’ve seen great companies like Team17 and Curve do some fantastic things in the publishing space in more traditional areas, and we’re very keen

We’re very serious about being a major UK publisher, focusing specifically on VR.” O’Luanaigh says that nDreams can help studios with funding, development, PR, and marketing. The company’s virtual reality title The Assembly will launch on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR later this year.

DON’T DWELL ON THE NUMBERS, 2016 WILL BE GREAT
W
hen we ran the story last week that UK physical software sales had fallen once again, we received some disgruntled emails. We were being too negative, apparently. We had missed the good points in what was a difficult but nevertheless affluent period for UK games retail. Conversely, a few months ago when we ran a story on how upwards of 90 per cent of triple-A game sales happen at physical retail, we were accused of ignoring the challenges facing the High Street. Both statements were true and both complaints were equally valid. That’s the difficulty with headline writing; it can be impossible to convey the nuance of a complex market like video games. However, those numbers, that £2.1bn figure on our front page, they’re already meaningless. We all know how good and bad 2015 was. We were there. Instead, what’s worth doing in this week’s MCV, is to compare our market analysis on pages 6, 7, 8 and 9, with our ‘Things to Look Forward to’ article on pages 16 to 19. The market data tell us that Nintendo games were all but absent from the charts, that PS4 and Xbox One game sales are increasing, and that accessories are more popular than ever. Our look at 2016 shows us that Nintendo is back with some big games and a new console. It highlights a ridiculous number of major titles for PS4 and Xbox One. And it also reveals that we’ve got some major

2016’s plan seems to tally nicely with what 2015’s data suggests we need. peripherals coming, not least the promising (if pricey) VR headsets. The plan for 2016 seems to tally quite nicely with what 2015’s market data suggests the games industry needs. So by all means study the charts pages, but make sure to take in pages 16 to 19, as well. I know which will become more important to me as we head deeper into this New Year. THE RETURN OF BRITSOFT I was asked this week: ‘Who would you say is the biggest British games publisher?’ After thinking about whether Jagex counts, and discounting King for being under Activision’s US flag, I suggested: Team17? It’s a shame to see how the British publisher has waned since the ‘90s. But the growth of certain indie publishers, and now this merger between Curve and Kuju, suggests a brighter future. Let’s not oversell it. We are not about to witness the overnight emergence of the next Eidos. But with so many small businesses struggling for attention in a crowded market, it makes sense that developers and publishers might start to unite. And that’s at least one positive to take from a challenging, and maturing, indie games scene. cdring@nbmedia.com

ANNUAL DATA 2015
The Year that was With fewer consoles and games sold year-on-year, 2015 might appear to have been a disappointing period – but that’s not entirely the case. Christopher Dring takes a closer look the UK games market in 2015
T
he headline news from this year’s GfK report is this: There were fewer games sold last year, there were fewer consoles sold last year, but accessory sales continue to rise. Yet there are some significant victories to be found in the data from 2015, and those triumphs are largely centred around anything to do with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The combined install base for these machines – according to retail reports – now sits at 5.5 million. GfK Entertainment’s data shows that over £700 million was generated from physical software sales on both of Sony and Microsoft’s latest platforms. That’s over 75 per cent of all physical game revenue from last year. If you look at the Top 50 on page nine, you’ll notice that almost every single game was a PS4 or Xbox One title. The single exception being Mario Kart 8 on Wii U (there were no 3DS, Vita or PC games in the Top 50). And in terms of accessories, nine of the Top Ten were for PS4 or Xbox One. PS4 was the dominant platform of the year once again, with the highest software and hardware sales. However, Microsoft did have the largest number of exclusive games in the charts with seven, whereas Sony just had two. In terms of new IP, it was a relatively poor 2015. Only three new IPs released last year made the Top 50: Evolve from 2K Games, Bandai Namco’s Project CARS and Warner Bros’ Dying Light.
January 15th 2016
Speaking of Warner Bros, the company has not just broken into Top Five physical publishers, but it is now in the Top Three. There were eight Warner Bros-published games in the Top 50 (and four LEGO games): Batman: Arkham Knight (No.6), LEGO Jurassic World (No.10), Dying Light (No.19), LEGO Dimensions (No.25), Mortal Kombat X (No.26), LEGO Batman III: Beyond Gotham (No.31), LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (No.38) and Mad Max (No.45). As a result of fewer releases, Ubisoft, Nintendo and Sony slipped down the publisher rankings. However, all three have significantly stronger release slates for 2016, so they’re likely to be back up amongst the leaders this year. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 software sales continue to tumble. PS3 software revenue, for instance, was down 61 per cent versus 2014. Although that’s not quite so severe when you consider that PS3 software sales also dropped 59 per cent between 2013 and 2014. It will be interesting to see what impact backwards compatibility on Xbox One might have on Xbox 360 software sales over the next year. Kids titles still perform strongly on previous generation machines, particularly titles such as Minecraft, the LEGO games and toys-to-life products. In fact, 55 per cent of Disney Infinity 3.0, Skylanders SuperChargers and LEGO Dimensions sales were made on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

OCULUS REVEALS £499 PRICE TAG FOR RIFT
$46m
VR pioneer Oculus has announced how much its Rift headset will cost. In the UK, the tech will set consumers back £499 – considerably higher than the $300-$400 price point that the firm’s founder Palmer Luckey previously suggested.
Activision has bought progaming company Major League Gaming to create the ‘ESPN of eSports’ for a reported $46m
@shahidkamal The Oculus Rift is just over £400 [in America]. VR is going to change everything. It’s not a lot of money for a taste of the future. (iPhones cost more) Shahid Ahmad, indie developer Wednesday, January 6th
@kezamacdonald The UK price for the Oculus Rift is £500. The controllers are going to be like £100 minimum when they release later this year as well. That’s a huge investment. Keza MacDonald, Kotaku UK Wednesday, January 6th
@MikeBithell The problem with VR is that there’s not any major competitors who will drive down price massively this year. Oh. No. Wait.
@Michael_French High cost to entry for VR actually helps a format like that. Go too cheap/mass market too early with not much content and people will abandon Michael French, UKIE/Film London Wednesday, January 6th
Mike Bithell, indie developer Wednesday, January 6th
@KyleOrl I don’t think Oculus will have much trouble selling to excited early adopters at $599. But it should come down before year’s end.
@TomHoggins That Oculus Rift price is a whopper, for sure, but claiming it’s the death of VR is rather premature, no?
Kyle Orland, Ars Technica Wednesday, January 6th
Tom Hoggins, The Daily Telegraph, Wednesday, January 6th
@greglockley Honestly, I don’t see £500 as that steep for Oculus. Plenty of folk splurged on the iWatch - a £300+ peripheral for an already £500+ device. Greg Lockley, BundleStars Wednesday, January 6th

WEEKLY SALES CHARTS
WEEKLY CHARTS IT’S a new year, but a largely familiar Top 40 chart. Call of Duty: Black Ops III claims its sixth No.1 since it launched in November and starts the year on top. It’s been a strong debut for ACTIVISION’s shooter as it nears 2m sales. One interesting element in the Top 40 is the return of Battlefield 4, over two years since its launch. EA’s shooter flew up from No.23 to tenth place after Argos sold the game for a mere £1.99. Another title from 2013 that remains in the Top Ten is Grand Theft Auto V in fourth place. ROCKSTAR’s crime title also takes the top spot in the Steam software rankings ahead of
VALVE’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Pre-orders for Rise of the Tomb Raider and XCOM 2 were also among the mostpurchased games on Steam last week. Minecraft continues to be popular in the App Store charts, with the two most purchased paid titles on iPad last week being Pocket Edition and Story Mode. Meanwhile, the highest-grossing game of the week on both iPad and iPhone was SUPERCELL’s Clash of Clans. The game has been backed by a major ad campaign, featuring famous faces such as Christoph Waltz and James Corden, including before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Things to Look Forward to in 2016
With the arrival of VR, and the maturation of the PS4 and Xbox One, alongside a burgeoning eSports scene, 2016 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting years for video games in a long while. With the help of the games industry, MCV rounds up the releases, tech, trends and events we expect will shape the coming 12 months
PAUL SULYOK CEO, Green Man Gaming I’m looking forward to seeing Lifeless the new game from Rigid-Soft on Green Man Loaded in 2016.
GURDEEP HUNJAN Games Manager, Sainsbury’s For me it starts with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. I’m a big fan of the series so really excited about the next adventure with Nathan Drake. SIMON KEMP GM, Nintendo UK Yo-Kai Watch on 3DS – a brand new IP for Europe. And the teasers for the new Zelda game on Wii U that we have seen so far look stunning. I’m sure it will have been well worth the wait. TIM WOODLEY SVP Global Brand and Marketing, 505 Games I’m looking forward to the next surprise mega-hits for our industry. The next Ark or Rocket League. The ones that (seemingly) come out of nowhere. JAMES COOKE Games Buying Manager, Argos I’m definitely looking forward to both Yo-Kai Watch and PlayStation VR.
SIMON MAXWELL COO, Gamer Network Q1 and Q2 are the best for some time. With titles like The Division, Hitman, Uncharted 4, XCOM, Dark Souls III and Total War: Warhammer, it’s going to be a busy few months.
January 15th 2016
(left to right) No Man’s Sky, Unravel and Quantum Break are among 2016’s intriguing new IP
01-19 NEW IP 2016 seems determined to make up for the relative slack of brand new franchises in 2015 with a plethora of new IPs coming to market. In just the first few months of the year, we have titles like Deep Silver’s Mighty No.9 (1), EA’s indie darling Unravel (2) as well as Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO (3) from Milestone. The new ideas don’t stop there, either. Further into the year, Sony is launching Guerilla’s sci-fi exploration title Horizon: Zero Dawn (4), the much-anticipated The Last Guardian (5) as well as Media Molecule’s new creation game Dreams (6). Meanwhile, Microsoft is releasing the longawaited cinematic TV show-cum-game Quantum Break (7) - featuring the talents of Hollywood stars like Shawn
16
Ashmore of X-Men fame, Lost and Lord of the Rings’ Dominic Monaghan, and Aidan Gillen and Lance Reddick from The Wire. That’s on top of Rare’s mysterious Sea of Thieves (8) and sci-fi title ReCore (9) from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune. Ubisoft’s The Division (10) and new medieval combat title For Honor (11) are set to launch in 2016, too, while Nintendo is also bringing Japanese 3DS hit Yo-Kai Watch (12) to the West. 2K is also releasing team shooter Battleborn (13), while Ninja Theory is launching Hellblade (14) for PS4 and PC. That’s on top of big new titles coming from the indie scene, such as Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky (15), 505’s Abzu (16), MDHR’s Cuphead (17), Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee (18), and Michel Ancel’s Wild (19).

2016 PREVIEW
ALISON FRASER Head of Commercial, ShopTo To name a few big hitters: Street Fighter V, The Division, Uncharted 4, Deux Ex, Doom and Mafia III. Some Nintendo updates will boost the industry too, let’s see what it has got for us next. STRAUSS ZELNICK Chairman and CEO, Take-Two 2016 is poised to be another exciting year. We look forward to delivering the highest quality entertainment experiences - such as XCOM 2 and Battleborn. RICH KEEN Head of Product Marketing, PlayStation UK I can’t wait for Uncharted 4 to land on PS4 and to see just how far Naughty Dog has taken the power and the capability of the console.
Uncharted 4 (top) was voted the title UK games retail was most excited for in MCV’s Annual Retail Survey
20-55 SEQUELS IT should come as no surprise that the next 12 months are also set to feature a number of high-profile sequels. Sony is launching the long-awaited next chapter in the Uncharted series – A Thief’s End (20) – in April. That title was what UK games retail was most excited for this year, according to MCV’s Retail Survey. 2016’s opening months also has Street Fighter V (21), Far Cry Primal (22), XCOM 2 (23), Doom (24), Dishonored 2 (25), Star Fox Zero (26) and a Ratchet and Clank (27) remake. Further into 2016 we have new entries in the Gears of War (28), Ghost Recon (29), Fire Emblem (30), Mirror’s Edge (31), Mass Effect (32), Mafia (33), Fable (34), Gran Turismo (35), Metroid (36), Deus Ex (37), South Park (38), Dead Island (39), Halo Wars (40), Plants vs Zombies (41) and Total War (42) series. Super hero title Crackdown 3 (43), shooter Homefront: The Revolution (44) and Tekken 7 (45) are all slated for a 2016 launch, too. Capcom also has three Resident Evil (46) titles on the way – 0 HD, Origins Collection
www.mcvuk.com
and new multiplayer shooter Umbrella Corps (and maybe even some more). Meanwhile, Nintendo is launching three Zelda games to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary (47) – the Wii U sees a remake of Twilight Princess HD and the long awaited new entry in the Zelda series, while the 3DS is receiving a handheld edition of 2014’s Nintendo/Koei Tecmo collaboration, Hyrule Warriors. That isn’t Nintendo’s only celebration, too. Pokémon is 20 years old this year (48) and the platform holder is launching the original Red and Blue for Wii U Virtual Console, as well as Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon for 3DS. Then there’s the usual suspects (49) – Call of Duty and FIFA. Destiny 2 (50) could well hit shelves by the end of the year, too. And rumours point to the launch of sequels for Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs (51) as well as mech shooter Titanfall (52). RPG fans are also in luck, with Square releasing Final Fantasy XV (53) and Final Fantasy VIII Remake (54). Bandai Namco is also publishing a third Dark Souls (55) title.
17
MARILENA PAPACOSTA PR and Marketing Manager, Koei Tecmo Uncharted 4 – I have wanted to reclaim the PS4 for months. It is one of my favourite series and the principal reason why I bought a PS4. TOM ORRY Editor, Videogamer Most people will say VR, Dark Souls III or NX, but I’ve been after a new Project Gotham Racing for ages, so the reveal of built up areas coming to DriveClub has me pretty excited. MATT CASTLE Editor, OXM It’s been too long since we got a proper Rare game – ignoring the 30 included in Rare Replay – but piratical MMO Sea of Thieves should be a return to form. CHARLOTTE KNIGHT Retail MD, GAME This year starts strongly with Far Cry Primal, Uncharted 4 and extension packs for LEGO Dimensions.
DARREN BOWEN Sales Director, Ubisoft I have to say The Division – it’s the most exciting product to come for some time, and with the beta and launch so close, it has made it a joy to come back to work after Christmas in anticipation.
January 15th 2016
2016 PREVIEW RUSSELL JONES Category Leader, Amazon Gran Turismo Sport, of course, a VR game, and the launch of VR across multiple formats is something that our customers are hugely excited about.
56-65 VIRTUAL REALITY
CHARLOTTE KNIGHT Retail MD, GAME It’s great to see that virtual reality is going to become increasingly available for gamers, with a number of headsets launching this year.
JAMES SCHALL Digital Distribution Director, Sega Europe I’m hoping to see new and immersive experiences bubble up as the much anticipated VR moves closer.
PHILIPP BROCK PR and Marketing Director, Nordic Games Looking beyond the VR Big Bang, I’m eager to discover whether or not it will fully realise its mass market potential.
IAN LIVINGSTONE Everybody is excited for VR so I’ll just add my name. Facebook didn’t buy Oculus just for immersive gaming, and VR looks set to become the ultimate social platform.
THE future is finally here. VR is launching this year alongside a wealth of interesting titles like Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey (56), Rock Band VR (57) and Adrift (58). First out of the gate is the Oculus Rift (59). The tech starts shipping in March, and costs £499 in the UK. That hardware is bundled with an Xbox One controller and two games – CCP’s space combat title EVE: Valykrie (60), platformer Lucky’s Tale (61). Next is the Vive (62), a collaboration between smartphone giant HTC and PC behemoth Valve. This is set for an April
HARVEY EAGLE Marketing Director, Xbox UK Last year was momentous for Xbox and this year promises to be even bigger and better. We’ll be continuing to provide gamers with the greatest games line-up in Xbox history, including Quantum Break, Cuphead and ReCore. I’m also personally looking forward to getting my hands on what’s next for the Gears franchise with Gears of War 4 and I am excited about what’s next for gaming on Windows 10.
ROBERT LINDSAY MD, Games Centre It will be interesting to see what Microsoft plan to do in order to close the gap on Sony in terms of console sales, and whether Nintendo’s NX will be a success compared to the Wii U.
January 15th 2016
PlayStation VR is set to launch in the first half of 2016
release and features a lot of neat tech such as Lighthouse, which means that player movement in real life is reflected in the game. The final major entrant in this new space is Sony’s PlayStation VR (63), which is due out in the first half of the year. This is probably the most accessible of the three given that it does not require a high-end PC to run. There’s also a number of titles coming out for PlayStation VR, including Guerilla’s multiplayer title RIGS (64), racing game Grand Turismo Sports and a new version of PS2 classic Rez (65).
RICHARD KEEN Head of Product Marketing, PlayStation UK There has been plenty of talk about VR’s potential: 2016 will be the year that players will get to experience it. LEE KIRTON PR and Marketing Director, Bandai Namco I’m looking forward to VR finally launching and the experiences that can be delivered by many great developers. ANTOINE MOLANT Marketing Director, Capcom I’m looking forward to seeing what VR will bring, how retail will evolve on digital offering, and knowing more about Nintendo’s NX.
66-70 HARDWARE
THE PS4 and Xbox One will continue to battle (66) well into 2016. And perhaps we’ll finally see price cuts for Xbox 360 and PS3 (67). But it’s Nintendo that we should be keeping an eye on this year. The Japanese firm is set to reveal and perhaps even launch the NX (68), its successor to its struggling Wii U. Speculation is running rampant in the industry about what we can expect from this new tech, with analysts predicting that the hardware
18
will combine aspects of both a home and handheld console. That’s not to say that the PS4 and Xbox One will not continue to dominate the conversion. The former has its VR headset on the way, while Microsoft is working on the HoloLens AR (69) device – which may materialise in 2016 – as well as cross-platform functionality with Windows 10 (70). And naturally, the two will continue to slog it out in the retail space and compete fiercely on price.

2016 PREVIEW
71-75 EVENTS
AND what would a year in the games industry be without a series of huge events for the big (and small) companies to show off what is coming next. E3 (71) is taking place between June 14th and 16th and we can presume Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, EA and Ubisoft will be setting out what the future holds for games. Next up, and closer to home, is Cologne’s Gamescom (72) – August 17th to August 21st – where we’ll see some more Euro-centric news. Eurogamer’s EGX show is also returning to Birmingham NEC (73) from September 22nd to September 25th.
DR JO TWIST CEO, UKIE I’m excited to see huge growth in eSports and VR finally hitting the shelves. I’m also looking forward to growing games culture across the UK and globally.
In addition, MCV is holding a number of events in 2016. On March 3rd we’ll be bringing the UK games industry together to celebrate the successes that made up 2015 at the MCV Awards (pictured above). That’s before our indie game networking event Interface (74), which is set to take place in May. MCV will be playing host to a number of other events (75) in the coming year, including Women of the Year on May 19th, the eSports Pro Awards (September), the Games Media Awards (October) and London Games Conference (November).
CHARLOTTE KNIGHT Retail MD, GAME 2016 also looks set to be a year where eSports continues to go from strength to strength, establishing itself as a real game changer.
DEBBIE BESTWICK MD, Team 17 I’m looking forward to seeing how console digital stores develop. They’ve come a long way, but there are lots of opportunities being left on the table.
www.mcvuk.com
IAN LIVINGSTONE I’m looking forward to going to DICE, GDC, Develop and The London Games Festival, and to playing No Man’s Sky, Clash Royale, Hitman, Yooka-Laylee, Crackdown 3, Total War: Warhammer (obviously), and The Warlock of Firetop Mountain on iOS (even more obviously).
76-79 TRENDS SHAUN CAMPBELL UK Country Manager, EA I’m hugely excited by our new EA Competitive Gaming Division, which will enable global competitions in our biggest IPs including FIFA and Battlefield.
IAN LIVINGSTONE I hope the Department for Education finally gives me the green light for my proposed Free School where games-based learning and learning-by-doing will be encouraged.
SPENCER CROSSLEY Sales and Marketing Director, Warner Bros I’m excited about the growth of eSports and consumers watching games, irrelevant of how it’s being broadcast.
SIMON MAXWELL COO, Gamer Network As VR beds in, PC is stronger than ever and as next-gen consoles hit their stride this could be an E3 full of surprises. With a possible much rumoured Nintendo announcement, this could be an E3 not to be missed as it always presents something special. It’s great to experience first hand the next wave of developments and to be together as an industry – even if its too often taking place in the Saddle Ranch.
The likes of EA, Activision, Xbox and Capcom are trying to win big in eSports this year
ESPORTS is set to continue to grow in both the UK and abroad (76). Big publishers are trying to make the most of the eSports scene, too. Xbox and Capcom are spending big to make Halo 5 and Street Fighter V the next competitive gaming hits. Meanwhile EA and Activision have both opened dedicated eSports divisions. Multiplay’s Insomnia events are set to expand to both Ireland and Scotland, too. 2016 will also be the year in which we see the fruits of the partnership between Nintendo and DeNA to develop mobile
19
HARVEY EAGLE Marketing Director, Xbox UK A big focus for the UK games industry in 2016 is eSports. With the Halo World Championships UK finals in London, Xbox will be at the forefront of it.
games (77). The first title – Miitomo – is due in March. It’s a big year for movies, too, with Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet and Clank, Warcraft and Angry Birds films all coming to the silver screen in 2016 (78). These are being produced with their developers to ensure they live up to fan’s expectations. Expect the trend of letting gamers be creative to continue (79). Following Fallout 4 mods and Super Mario Maker, Sony is releasing creation title Dreams, while Bethesda has mod support for the upcoming Doom.

INDIE INTERVIEW PIXELBOMB
How I learned to love the Bomb John Kavanagh is a video game veteran who has headed up major games businesses like Paramount and Crystal Dynamics. So what has brought him to a tiny studio in Manchester? Alex Calvin finds out about the allure of Pixelbomb
O
ver the last few years, there’s been a trend of video game veterans going indie. From Peter Molyneux to Fiona Sperry, past Cliff Bleszinski to Michel Ancel, we’ve seen a number of people who could walk into any job, go back to basics. And it’s not just creators, but business people, too. People such as industry vet John Kavanagh. Having held roles at the likes of Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, Kuju America and Paramount Pictures, Kavanagh made a return to the games industry in December as Manchester-based Pixelbomb’s MD. “Crystal Dynamics had about 120 people making a game. Now you need 200 people, and it takes three years to make something,” Kavanagh explains. “I’ll probably make three more games before I retire. I was really interested in the indie scene where you know the names of everybody working there and you’re very direct-to-consumer because it’s mostly digital. And you can get releases done some time before your grandchildren have grown up. That was the attraction.” This isn’t just a personal move for Kavanagh, but just what Pixelbomb was looking for in making its first game: Beyond Flesh and Blood. “John joining has opened up a lot of doors,” co-studio lead Phil Muwanga says. “I came from an indie background and I just focus on making the best games possible. But the games industry is a business and there was this whole other side to it. I didn’t know how to swim in those waters. With all of John’s experience, he has opened up a lot of doors for us and

to help get Beyond Flesh and Blood to where we want it to be.” In addition, Kavanagh’s business smarts and industry experience are going to help Pixelbomb realise its grander vision of becoming a digital publisher as well as a developer. “We have three things that we want to do which is create, curate and invest,” Kavanagh explains. “Over the coming year we are obviously going to publish our own titles, but we’re looking at other IPs and developers and see where we can add value to that process and get to market. We are interested in developers that need investment in order to move forward, too. We have a very ambitious growth plan.” BIG BREAK The studio was also one of the first British developers to benefit from UK tax relief when that scheme launched in 2014. But Muwanga believes more can be done to help out the development scene on a government level.

“The tax relief was a great boon to us,” he says. “But I would like to see more help for indies in the future – more transparency and awareness of all the grants that are out there. I spent a long time being indie and because I was just in my small isolated bubble, I wasn’t aware of all the help that the government could give.” Kavanagh believes that there is a gap between the triple-A and indie scenes that Pixelbomb can capitalise on. “Beyond Flesh and Blood is an indie game, so we’re not beholden to any publisher, but our budget is way beyond what most indie games would be. We’re in the middle,” he says. “We’re very lucky in that respect. We’re trying to capture that middle ground in the digital space between pure indie – bedroom coders – and teams of 250. We have about 25 people on this game. “That’s bigger than your average bedroom team.”

GERAINT EVANS, PQUBE INTERVIEW
Sebastien Loeb’s rallying cry After working for years on other racing IP, genre veteran Milestone is releasing a brand new franchise called Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO. Alex Calvin catches up with publisher PQube’s head of marketing Geraint Evans about the game’s four-month delay and how to keep pace in the crowded racing genre
S
ince the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, a number of new racing franchises have raced into stores. 2014 saw the release of Sony’s social racer DriveClub and Ubisoft’s open-world romp The Crew. Meanwhile, Slightly Mad Studios brought out hardcore sim racer Project CARS in May of last year. And now there’s still another on the way as racing vets Milestone prepare to launch a brand new racing franchise, Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO. “Milestone has worked on previous WRC titles with great success. However, the licence itself meant the studio was limited in what it could achieve,” marketing boss of publisher PQube Geraint Evans says. “Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO let the studio cast off the shackles and it has provided them with a blank canvas to include a staggering wealth of content – more miles of track, more cars spanning more of rally’s history and, crucially, really explore what can be done with the single player and career experience.”
www.mcvuk.com
The title was initially set for release in October 2015 but was one of many games to be pushed from last year into 2016. It is now hitting shelves on January 29th. “The delay has given us more breathing room. Christmas is always extremely crowded so shifting the release has allowed us to go out at a time when we can make a much bigger impact,” Evans explains. “The key thing is the additional time to polish the game. Being content complete in autumn of last year, it’s allowed the development team to focus entirely on polishing everything from physics and handling to the overall presentation. Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO is without a doubt one Milestone’s best games yet. He continues: “It also gives us some distance from the mad Christmas rush – and in particular allows us to make a greater impact with our marketing budget. We’re not going to pretend we can compete with the likes of Fallout, Star Wars, FIFA and Tomb Raider on marketing budget. We have to
be smarter so that we can get as much awareness as possible – going out in a quieter period makes perfect sense.”
There’s an insatiable hunger for racing games that offer a very different feel in terms of handling and physics. Geraint Evans, PQube Sebastien Loeb Rally EVO features 60 cars and 300km of rally tracks
21
RACING PILE-UP As well as the aforementioned new racing IPs, there are still the usual triple-A giants – such as Forza and Need for Speed – making it a significantly competitive genre. “It’s a great time for racing game fans and developers,” Evans says. “While you still have more prominent IP like Forza, there is plenty of room for more specialised racers, not just to succeed, but to thrive. Releases like Ride and MXGP have done incredibly well and continue to sell. There’s a huge appetite for racing games outside the more traditional titles. “We’re finding that it’s not just fans of the sport that are gravitating towards these games, but also more mainstream gamers who are looking for something that feels different to F1 or Forza.” It’s because of this that PQube has found its relationship with Milestone so fruitful. “Milestone’s racers continue to perform amazingly well in the UK,” he explains. “There’s an insatiable hunger for racing games that offer a very different feel in terms of handling and physics – but also for racing games that offer a high degree of authenticity and accuracy to the motorsport or vehicles replicated in game. “Milestone has a history of making incredibly deep simulations for racing fans – but also scalable handling models that allow those curious about more specialised motorsports to have a fun and accessible experience.” January 15th 2016

SHELF LIFE Steve Walker from Insane Games in Wells tells MCV about customers slightly shifting away from traditional video games, developing more business lines, and about his (high) expectations for virtual reality. How has your business been lately? Around Christmas we were as busy as ever but we have seen quite a bit of a shift away from traditional video games lines to new things such as accessories and collectibles. What games have been selling particularly well recently? Battlefront did exceptionally well for us along with Fallout 4 as well. They have predominately been sold on PS4 for us.
PRE-ORDER CHARTS
And obviously trading cards are massive for us as well.
What are your prospects for 2016? We’re basically developing more lines, probably scaling back from video games slightly but it will still be our predominant business line. Remaining competitively priced is probably our biggest issue. We’ll get more into collectibles, a larger range of accessories for video games, more of table games, board games and that sort of thing.
Which platform do you think will perform the best in 2016? So far, for what we know, I would say PS4. But obviously we are on the very early days and Microsoft is playing its cards very close to its chest so it might have an ace up to its sleeves.
I’m hoping VR will do really well as it has the potential to bring something extra to games. Steve Walker, Insane Games Wells

The release of Morpheus, now known as PlayStation VR. Concerning games, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is probably the next title I’m looking forward to now. And personally, apart from the business, I’m looking forward to LEGO Marvel’s Avengers. How do you think virtual reality will do? I’m hoping it will do really, really well. Obviously I’m a bit

worried about the entry cost of the actual machine, as it will prevent a lot of people from buying it but, I think it has the potential to bring something extra to games. What are your thoughts on £499 price point announced for the Oculus Rift? It’s quite pricey, which I think is going to hurt its sales.I’m hoping the PlayStation VR will not come out as expensive.

MARVEL
MARVEL With the release of LEGO Marvel’s Avengers at the end of the month, Marie Dealessandri takes a look at the newest Marvel merchandise on the market
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers hits the shelves for all platforms on January 29th, with the difficult task to cover the story of 6 films: The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Along with more than 100 playable characters, Warner’s game will feature eight open worlds: New-York City, Asgard, Barton Farm, Malibu, S.H.I.E.L.D Base Exterior, Sokovia, South Africa and Washington D.C.
Warner Bros was the third top-selling video game publisher in the UK in 2015.
Guardians of the Galaxy’s characters will not be featured in this game in spite of the huge success of the movie. Perhaps the Guardians will get a LEGO game of its own. In 2015, Warner Bros was the top-selling video game publisher in the US and the third in the UK, thanks to hits like Dying Light, Mortal Kombat X, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and, of course, LEGO: Jurassic World and LEGO Dimensions. Heroes also performed very well and has just broken the 1m sales mark in the UK, becoming the bestselling LEGO title on both PS4 and Xbox One. “The game’s appeal is a unique blend of clever humour and high quality gameplay from BAFTA Award-winning TT Games, along with the universal charm of LEGO and the hugely popular Marvel Universe,” commented Warner Bros sales and marketing director Spencer Crossley. In the meantime, Marvel
cinematic universe became the highest grossing movie franchise of all time, with $7.787bn, surpassing Harry Potter ($7.723bn). Marvel has been releasing at least one movie every year since 2008 (2009 being the only exception). From 2017, three movies will be released each year. Phase Three of the Marvel cinematic universe will begin with Captain America: Civil War, which will be released on April 29th, 2016.

IN 2015, the Brazilian video games market’s revenue reached $1.5bn (£1.02bn), with a 23 per cent growth compared to the previous year. Sony Brazil is currently the market leader, according to data firm Euromonitor, which states the company’s value sales grew by 18 per cent within video games in 2014. Surprisingly, Sony’s PS2 remains one of the best selling consoles in Brazil because of its affordable price. Currently the 11th largest games market worldwide (and no. 1 in Latin America) according to the research firm Newzoo, the Brazilian video games sector has been influenced by the prohibition of imports until the 1990s. Video games have been labelled as ‘non-essential products’, leading to high taxation that prevented manufacturers entering Brazil’s market. A 2011 law introduced an exemption on certain taxes, allowing the Brazilian games market to blossom. Still, prices for video games in the country remain high, leaving the door open to

Sony’s PS2 is still one of the bestselling console in Brazil because of its affordable price piracy. The average annual spend per player is £29.68, according to Newzoo. In 2015, Nintendo pulled out of the market, as a consequence of the high prices on electronics: the Wii U launched in the country in 2013 for about R$1,899 (£560). The PS4 still costs nearly £1,000 but Sony will shortly begin to manufacture it in Brazil, which should reduce its local price. Around 82 per cent of the nearly 34 million Brazilian gamers play on smartphones. 32 per cent of them even consider smartphones as their favourite platform for gaming, according to an analysis by developer Sioux and research company Blend.

ASIA TERRITORY REPORT Sponsored by
Territory Report: Asia Console gaming may no longer be in fashion in some parts of Asia, but its biggest markets are home to a thriving mobile gaming scene. Alex Calvin reports
T
he Asia region is responsible for roughly 46 per cent of the revenue generated by the global games industry. That’s according research firm Newzoo, which estimated the region would rake in a huge $41.6bn (£28.6bn) in 2015. However, the region is not without its challenges. Just take the recent figures released to MCV by Japanese games publication Famitsu. Those indicated that the region’s console games market was in fact 13 per cent down year-on-year for 2015, and had reached its lowest point since 1989, with only ¥321bn (£1.9bn) generated in revenue. This data only takes into account physical games – still dominant in the console space in the region. However, while the physical games market is faltering in Japan, the mobile market is more than making up for it. According to research firm SuperData, Japan boasts the world’s biggest mobile games market, generating a whopping $6.2bn (£4.2bn) in revenue during 2015 – more than double the value of the console games market in the region. This is certainly a factor in Japan still being the third biggest games market in the world in terms of revenue, according to Newzoo, which predicated the total revenue of the Japanese games sector would be $12.3bn (£8.4bn) in 2015. The average annual spend per player stands at a relatively high $312.97 (£214.55), too.

China, they are less willing to spend money than their Japanese counterparts. In general, Newzoo says that Chinese gamers spend on average $141.38 (£96.90) per year, less than half of what Japanese gamers spend. 35 per cent of players in China are willing to spend money, compared with 59 per cent in Japan.
Asian territories dominate Newzoo’s chart of games markets by revenue, China being the biggest market in the world, with South Korea coming in fourth place. ENTER THE DRAGON With a population of 1.4bn, it should not be a surprise that China also boasts the most profitable games market in the world. Newzoo claims that the Chinese games industry generated $22.2bn (£15.2bn) in revenue in 2015, with 29 per cent of this coming from mobile devices. Though that’s a relatively low portion of the country’s
Despite this, China’s games market is expected to grow 16.1 per cent between 2014 and 2018; Japan’s market is predicted to grow 1.2 per cent. However, while the mobile market in China is booming, consoles are
£28bn Revenue expected to be generated by the Asian games industry in 2015 games revenue, China in fact boasts the largest mobile player userbase in Asia. SuperData reports that the country is responsible for 62 per cent of the total Asian mobile market with 785 million smartphone gamers. The Chinese mobile market is worth $5.2bn (£3.6bn), the second biggest in Asia and beaten only by Japan’s $6.2bn (£4.3bn). These figures highlight that although there are more mobile gamers in

failing to take off. In 2014, China temporarily lifted its ban of console sales before axing the ban for good. Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in the territory, but reports suggest that neither machine has performed well. In July, estimates from analyst Nike Partners suggested that the two consoles would struggle to sell 550,000 units between them by the end of 2015. PlayStation CEO Andrew House blamed the region’s famously strict censorship legislation on the PlayStation 4’s weak performance. China is also home to the world’s biggest games company, Tencent, which saw profits of $1bn (£686m) in its first financial quarter of 2015. MOBA-CRAZY The third biggest territory in Asia is South Korea, which is also the fourth largest games market in the world according to Newzoo. In 2015, the country was expected to generate $4bn (£2.7bn) in revenue. South Korea boasts a mobile market of $1.3bn (£892m) in 2015, with 46 per cent of the country’s revenue coming from smartphone titles. Google’s Android operating system is dominant in both South Korea and China thanks to big local companies such as Xiaomi and Samsung using the mobile platform. But, one of the biggest aspects of the South Korean games market is the blockbuster success of Riot Games’ MOBA League of Legends, which has taken the country by storm. That title – alongside Blizzard’s StarCraft IP – has encouraged a thriving competitive gaming scene in the region, with the Federal Game Institute predicting that around 10m South Korean gamers are interested in eSports. The Korean Internet and Digital Entertainment associating trade body goes as far as to

OFF THE RECORD
OFF THE RECORD This week, one kid has a Christmas Day outburst, Nomad’s boss wields some futuristic weaponary and the BBC commissions a brand new crime drama (maybe) FESTIVE RAGE IN-BETWEEN endless images of floods, and the suggestion that somehow Syria was to blame, the Daily Mail found time to tell the story of an upset young lad who didn’t get the right copy of WWE 2K for Christmas. The tragedy occured on Christmas morning and ended in full-on gamer rage. It’s okay, 2K offered to step up to the plate to ensure the not-at-allungrateful kid was able to lay the smackdown on things other than the game packaging.
SWORD PLAY AS a part of its 40th birthday celebrations, Warhammer firm Games Workshop opened its doors to the public. During this event, indie publisher Nomad Games announced it was releasing a Warhammer 40,000-themed version of its digital board game Talisman. While on site, Nomad boss Don Whiteford was caught on camera wielding a Space Marine’s ChainSword (above). Reports suggest he was escorted off the premises by the Imperial Guard. Oh, who are we kidding, the Imperial Guard would run a mile (Is this a Warhammer joke? -Ed).
TRUE DETECTIVE ONE of the biggest stories during the last week was the news that indie publisher Curve Digital and developer Kuju would be merging together. The release was accompanied by the following picture, featuring Curve’s new boss Dominic Wheatley and the firm’s Chair Stuart Dinsey in what appears to be a promotion shot for a brand new BBC crime drama. Or as one industry PR (ok, it was Steve Merrett) described it: ‘Monkfish and Monkfish: Coming Soon to BBC2 (after the Snooker). When an upperclass Dandy meets a down-atheel private eye, chaos ensues...’.
