Xbox bets on FIFA 17 to transform European sales Microsoft says new ‘S’ console has boosted sales across Europe by Christopher Dring THE 1TB and 500GB Xbox One S consoles will launch next month, with a free download of FIFA 17. Both bundles will hit shelves on September 22nd, that’s a week before FIFA is officially out. Fans will be able to play the game early via a one-month free trial to EA Access. The 1TB SKU will cost £299 with the 500GB model set at £249. It follows the launch of the 2TB Xbox One S, which has sold out across Europe. “According to NPD, we were the No.1 selling console in the US during July, which was great news,” Xbox marketing boss, Aaron Greenberg told us.

“Last week in the UK, we were also the No.1 console. So we have seen some really nice momentum post-E3. We have seen similar momentum across Europe, frankly, some really great sales.” He continued: “FIFA is the No.1 title across Europe, which is why we have a multi-year partnership with EA. This new Xbox, FIFA 17, the extra content that

adds a tonne of value, the ability to play it seven days earlier... that is a massive differentiator for FIFA fans, and for people looking to decide which console to buy - there are still millions and millions of people across Europe that haven’t bought a next-gen console yet. We believe this will help us drive share gains in those key markets.”

Microsoft: ‘There are over 139m PC gamers in Europe’ Platform holder guns for our massive PC user-base O Halo Wars 2 is almost ‘PC first’ by Christopher Dring XBOX is heavily promoting Windows 10 at Gamescom this week in a bid to win over some of Europe’s 139m PC gamers. The firm is showcasing some of its biggest PC titles at the show, including Halo Wars 2 – which marketing chief Aaron Greenberg describes as ‘almost PC-first’. The company also announced that Xbox Game Preview – currently only available on Xbox One – will come to Windows 10 later this year. The programme is similar to Steam Early Access, with studios able to let gamers play titles before they’re completed. The first game to use Windows 10 Preview is Rockfish Games’ Everspace. “We see Gamescom as a really big PC show, so it’s great going out there,”

Greenberg told MCV @ Gamescom. “There are over 139m PC gamers in Europe, so you will see us showing a lot of our top franchises on PC. That is the great benefit of Windows 10 gaming, because we can showcase what 4K looks like today for people that have those high-end PCs.” The move is seen as a way for Microsoft to expand its software user base, despite falling behind PlayStation in the latest console battle. ‘BEAM WILL ATTRACT NEW VIEWERS TO LIVE-STREAMING’

Microsoft expects Halo Wars 2 to introduce a lot of PC gamers to its flagship franchise

“We really want to take our titles to as many gamers as possible,” Greenberg added. “We’re bringing great triple-A titles that have traditionally been on the console to the PC, letting people play ReCore or Gears of War 4 or Forza Horizon 3 – that’s a lot of great content. “We also know that PC gamers have different preferences, so we’re also going to be there with titles like Halo Wars 2 as an action real-time strategy Wednesday, August 17th 2016

game – a genre that has done very well on the PC. We think of a title like that as almost PC-first for us. We can bring a lot of new fans to that franchise because it will be on PC.” In terms of Xbox Game Preview, he continued: “To let gamers play and give feedback is extremely helpful for indie developers. “What we’re doing around the whole network between Xbox One and Windows 10, we can now do that with our Game Preview titles.” 05

Microsoft’s acquisition of Beam can bring in more gamers to live-streaming, says marketing boss Aaron Greenberg. The live-streaming platform allows gamers to play alongside streamers. It is a competitor to Twitch, YouTube and Facebook Live. “What is innovative about Beam is it gives viewers the ability to watch and also play along with their favourite streamers in real time,” Greenberg said. “It is a small team that has created something really unique. They have won a number of awards and it has just been really, really fun to get to work with them. “What we like about it is that it moves traditional game streaming from a passive experience into a more, interactive, realtime participation. “We think that has the ability to bring in more people, and so we are excited to add them to the family, and do more things with them across Xbox Live.”

Nordic Games: ’THQ put us on the map’ CEO says THQ acquisition made Nordic an international player like: ‘Who the fuck is Nordic Games?’ – no-one had ever heard of us,” Wingefors said. “Suddenly, there was a lot of interest in us and it transformed the entire business into something else. “Before, we were a European player, not an international one. Overcooked coming to retail this Christmas by Christopher Dring HIGHLY-RATED cooking sim, Overcooked, will receive a boxed release, MCV @ Gamescom can reveal. It was made by two-person studio Ghost Town and is a co-op cooking title where players must satisfy diners in a series of unusual kitchens. It was released earlier this month digitally by Team17, and this Christmas it will Wednesday, August 17th 2016

come in a box via Sold Out on PS4 and Xbox One. The ‘Gourmet Edition’ will also include six brand new levels. “The reception to Overcooked has been phenomenal,” said Team17 MD Debbie Bestwick. “That’s why we knew we had to bring Overcooked to a wider audience as a boxed special edition. This is exactly the type of indie game retail should be supporting.” 07

Take-Two, Capcom and Ubisoft praise Project Scorpio and Neo Bosses say more powerful hardware is good for devs and consumers

by Christopher Dring THERE are ‘no negatives’ to PlayStation Neo and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, say leading publisher bosses. Speaking to MCV @ Gamescom, Strauss Zelnick from Take-Two, Ubisoft’s Alain Corre and Capcom’s Antoine Molant insist that far from splitting the fan base, the updated machines will only boost the console sector for everyone. Neo is the codename of Sony’s more powerful PlayStation 4, while Scorpio – which was announced at E3 and is due in late 2017 – is a much-improved

Xbox One. “It is definitely not difficult because of backwards compatibility, so the fact that we can do more in-depth, exciting, faster, better, cooler stuff is great. So there are no negatives,” said Take-Two CEO Zelnick. Capcom’s European marketing director Molant agreed: “It makes sense from both a business perspective and a consumer perspective. It is very expensive for hardware manufacturers to come up with completely new consoles each time, and the same with publishers because they have to adapt. [These machines] give the 08

consumer more choice in terms of what they want, how much they want to spend - you could go for an expensive, updated, VR-ready, 4K console, or you can get a cheaper older model, which might attract younger or casual users.” It’s also something that’s excited Ubisoft’s developers. “Our teams are very excited as there is more memory, more teraflops, and they can express themselves more and do bigger and nicer gamers,” said Ubisoft Europe chief Corre. “The rhythm of novelties and news has boosted our market for the last 20 years, and it is Wednesday, August 17th 2016

KOELNMESSE INTERVIEW INTERVIEW

‘Com on in Koelnmesse’s project manager Tim Endres tells MCV @ Gamescom about what we can expect from this week’s festivities What are Gamescom’s strengths this year? The event programme offers fantastic highlights. In Hall 10.1, the Gamescom award for best products at the show will be handed out on-stage. In Hall 5.1, indoor events such as Lasergame or the RC Drift Games will take place, and for the first time this year on P8 [outdoor area behind Hall 8], Red Bull will impress the spectators with the F-Fighters FMX Show. A target group-specific programme is available for families in the Family and Friends area (Hall 10.2). Gamescom campus will provide infotainment (Hall 10.2), and those who want to inform themselves about career opportunities in the industry are at exactly the right place with the Jobs and Career Fair (Hall 10.2). . What has changed compared to last year’s edition? As in 2015, Gamescom is covering 193,000 square metres. For the first time, in addition to Activision and EA, further exhibitors will be moving Wednesday, August 17th 2016

The fan shop area is additionally in Hall 5.2 this year. What would you like Gamescom to become? We are more than a trade fair; we’re a joint experience and an international industry meeting point. We will continue to expand upon this and work to formulate new concepts for making Gamescom even more attractive to everyone. 11

Territory Report: Italy The Italian industry has seen growth from all segments in 2015. Marie Dealessandri investigates this healthy market and its expanding development scene

Population 59,801,000 Capital City Rome Currency Euro

THE Italian video games market is one of the healthiest in Europe, with a 6.9 per cent growth in 2015 compared to 2014. It reached a turnover of almost €1bn (£0.84bn), according the latest study by the AESVI (the Italian Games Industry Association) and GfK Italy. All areas of the industry saw growth last year, with software sales increasing six per cent, consoles rising 8.7 per cent and accessories gaining seven per cent. Physical sales remain the key segment of the market, representing 59.8 per cent of sales volume. But digital gaming is expanding rapidly and gained 21.6 per cent in 2015, the AESVI points out. It now represents 38.5 per cent of the market and a turnover of over €200m (£167m). In 2015, there were over 25m gamers in Italy – that is about 49 per cent of the Italian population over the age of 14. The market is perfectly divided between men (50 per cent) and women (50 per cent). “Today, the Italian games industry is quite active, vibrant and diverse,” 12

Thalita Malagò, secretary general at the AESVI, told MCV @ Gamescom. “Looking forward, we are confident in seeing significant growth for Italy’s development scene thanks to major studios’ plans to expand, the rise of startups and new university courses. What speaks in favour of Italian developers is a fine combination of technical competence and creativity, which already defines the ‘Made in Italy’ brand in many other fields of excellence such as fashion and design.” MADE IN ITALY Italy is the home of well-known indie IPs, such as Ovosonico’s Murasaki Baby, Storm in a Teacup’s N.E.R.O, MixedBag’s Futuridium and LKA’s The Town of Light. And that’s without mentioning triple-A studios such as Milestone, which developed famous racing titles such as the MotoGP and Ride franchises, as well as Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo and Valentino Rossi: The Game. “The Italian Government has hardly ever given any form of Wednesday, August 17th 2016

tax relief to support the gaming industry, but now things are changing. This is thanks to AESVI’s continued efforts, plus the growing interest in gaming as a cultural medium and a business in its own right,” says Giovanni Bazzoni, CEO at Digital Tales, a studio mostly known for developing adventure and racing titles. The Italian government just announced the creation of an investment fund and a tax credit in favour of developers (more about that in Friday’s edition). This should boost the Italian development community, which remains relatively small and young. “We are definitely proud and honoured to be part of the Italian Wednesday, August 17th 2016

video games industry,” says Andrea Postiglione, CEO at publisher Mangatar. “These are interesting times, where skills, culture, talent and Italian creativity perfectly match the opportunities this field can offer. “Therefore, we can experiment a lot, be incredibly competitive and innovative, and win over gamers and businesses ready to embrace a new dimension of entertainment.” For Italian developers and publishers alike, the place to be every year is the Milan Games Week, which is the most important video games show in the country. The event broke a record in 2015, when over 120,000 visitors and 500 journalists attended. 13

@GAMESCOM SPECIAL INVESTIGATION

Does eSports need regulation? As pro-gaming gets bigger, so does the risk of corruption and cheating. Alex Calvin investigates whether the Wild West of eSports needs a sheriff

A

(Top to bottom) Sheridans’ Nixon, ESIC’s Smith and Gfinity’s Upton

s the prize money in eSports grows, so does the pressure and desire to win. To this end, we’ve seen reports of players using drugs such as ADHD medication Ritalin to aid focus, or utilising software to hamper their opponents. Thus the question of whether pro-gaming requires regulation has arisen. Various bodies have been founded in order to keep an eye on the eSports scene, including World eSports Council, the World eSports Association and, recently, eSports Integrity Coalition. Meanwhile, government organisations like the UK Gambling Commission and the DCMS are looking into the sector in the UK. In Korea, where pro-gaming is almost the country’s national sport, the sector is looked after by KeSPA – an organisation with strong ties to the region’s government and police. “eSports needs regulation in a very specific way,” says eSports Integrity Coalition’s (ESIC) integrity commissioner Ian Smith. “I don’t believe that eSports needs

governance in the broad sense of a FIFA-type organisation. eSports doesn’t work that way. It’s more akin to an Olympics because it involves 20 different sports. There’s no crossover between CounterStrike and League of Legends, yet they fall under the same banner. “What eSports does need is regulation in certain, specific areas. For example, it should try to address things like child protection because we have a lot of young participants. But what ESIC is focused on is integrity. In particular, we’re very focused on cheating. There’s ‘cheating to win’, using software or hampering your opponent with online attacks, or doping – ways of trying to win unfairly. There’s also ‘cheating to lose’, match fixing and betting fraud, which is the danger that eSports has not properly confronted and is not adequately geared up to deal with.” What’s more, he says, lack of regulation is deterring sponsors: “eSports’ demographic and numbers indicate that it should

ESPORTS INVESTIGATION have 30 and 40 per cent nonendemic sponsors, the likes of Emirates, Coke, Toyota, Visa, Mastercard, AMEX and so on. “But eSports has less than five per cent. The biggest reason for this is a complete lack of regulation, in particular, around integrity issues. Major sponsors have been stung by scandals, like FIFA, in the past.“ DRUGS DON’T WORK Gambling and drugs are the two areas that Andrew Nixon, partner at law firm Sheridans, identifies as big potential issues. “Integrity is a key part of any industry, in particular one in which betting markets exist,” he says. “By next year it is anticipated that all major bookmakers will offer markets on pro-gaming events – that creates

commercial opportunities, but it opens the industry up to the risk of match manipulation. “Another area is doping: it is different in eSports compared with traditional sports, with the issues revolving around psycho stimulants and relaxants rather than physical enhancers, but it is an issue that needs to be regulated.” However, Peter Lewin, an associate at law firm Purewal and Partners, believes some of these problems have been exaggerated: “In some form, on certain issues, eSports probably does require regulation. While anti-doping and match-fixing are often flagged by the media as two of the key areas requiring regulation, there’s little evidence that either of these are actually systemic problems within

the industry. Other areas that are actually more at the forefront of recent eSports problems include player protections, tournament organisation and visa issues.” WATCH YOURSELF Spike Laurie, the boss of progaming league ESL, agrees that eSports needs to be monitored, but not by an outside force. He believes that the industry is already doing a good job of keeping its house clean. “The industry is setting best practice and that’s really important because in this instance, a handsoff approach is working in terms of regulation,” he says. “The industry is self-regulating and doing what’s best for eSports and what’s best for the players.” Gfinity CEO Neville Upton agrees: “We have our Gfinity Code of Conduct. We have very high standards and rigorous checks with our online anti-cheat systems. We have over 100 admins and they 16

are very well trained so they can properly adjudicate on games. At the moment we’re just building our own standards. We’d like to share those with other tournament operators.” The fact that the industry is growing up and approaching things with a greater deal of professionalism is something that Purewal’s Lewin is keen to highlight. “While eSports regulation is a worthwhile topic of discussion, it’s important not to forget the massive leaps that the industry has made in terms of professionalisation,” he concludes. “We now have eSports appearing on places like ESPN, we have larger tournaments, prize pools and player salaries, there has been an influx of nonendemic investment both in terms of sponsors and team owners, and an increase in the involvement of traditional business advisers. “Although there is room for improvement, there’s certainly already a lot to celebrate.” Wednesday, August 17th 2016

INSIGHT LUCID SOUND

Grown up gaming audio Big Boy PR’s Alex Verrey explains why his client Lucid Sound wants to bring gaming headsets into the 21st century FROM a man with fifteen years’ experience in gaming hardware PR, I find it curious how peripheral design seems eternally stuck in the 1990s. Let me explain: gaming has never been more mainstream. Modern technology has turned most of the planet into owners of powerful gaming devices via smartphones. Why then are we still designing gaming headphones that look like they belong in a direct-to-TV sci-fi movie? BLAST FROM THE PAST Our modern gaming devices are aesthetically beautiful, designed to seamlessly blend in with daily lives, but if I want to wear a quality set of gaming headphones, I’m forced to look like a reject from Tron. With flashing lights, slabs of plastic in-line remotes and made up audio technologies that your average eight-yearold would see through, the design of most gaming headphones is demeaning enough, but for too long

the consumer has been forced to accept sub-par audio quality in exchange for the convenience of using their cans with a gaming console. Little thought is put into how gamers actually

Why are we still designing headsets that look like they belong in sci-fi films? interact with their devices, let alone concentrate on delivering a well-tuned and rounded audio experience. Don’t get me wrong, there are exceptions of course, nor 20

am I blind to the truth that the more outlandish designs do have a committed audience. But generally gaming headphones appear to be created by committee; manufactured to hit a price point and designed by those who think they understand what will appeal to a gamer without ever realising that most of us just want an attractively designed, practical product which fits in with our daily life. It sounds simple doesn’t it? I have a point to my minor rant, of course, and should you agree with me, I politely invite you to visit Lucidsound. com, where you’ll find gaming headsets (like the LS-30, above) for those who don’t do gaming headsets. OMNYEX INTERVIEW

Omnyex’s foray into digital Business development manager Paul Collins tells MCV @ Gamescom about the trends boosting Omnyex’s business Tell us about Omnyex for those who are unfamiliar with your work. We’re a leading independent company specialising in digital media, with a global reach – our HQ is based in Dubai, but we have offices around the world. This helps us to maintain strong relationships with the most influential online retailers, publishers and other key industry figures. We focus on businessto-business and wholesale distribution, emphasising the importance of secure delivery and market-leading prices. That’s us in a nutshell. What successes have you seen recently? As digital downloads continue to grow, clients want the reassurance of safe, secure delivery and competitive prices. With this in mind, we’ve seen interest in both triple-A and independent titles increase within the past year. VR is obviously the next big trend in gaming, so we’re looking into our options there. It’s never been more exciting Wednesday, August 17th 2016

to be a gamer – we’re moving deeper and deeper into living games, rather than just playing them.

We’re moving deeper and deeper into living games rather than just playing them. What are you highlighting at Gamescom this year? We’ll be looking to forge great working relationships with new publishers and explore fresh possibilities, to help diversify our services. Gamescom is a fantastic 23

place to meet people from across the industry, and there’s always a great atmosphere. What are the biggest trends affecting you? Digital media sales have increased as buyers discover the advantages of streaming and downloading, so this is definitely a trend that’s working for us as wholesale distributors. This has evened the playing field for independent developers, too: independent games are easier to make than ever today, and because they’re cheaper to produce, players get to explore innovative games at bargain prices. PREVIEW ATTACK ON TITAN

AOT: Wings of Freedom Massive manga and anime IP Attack on Titan is being made into a game by the developers of Dynasty Warriors. Alex Calvin finds out more

Players are tasked with dispatching the giant Titans

flying around using the omni-directional mobility gear [waist mounted grappling hooks], and a battle system that draws upon allies and items to confront the powerful Titans to replicate the tense battles of the manga and anime.” Koinuma also believes that this game will appeal to consumers who enjoy action titles; not just Attack on Titan fans. “We wanted to please the many fans of the anime so we felt that it was necessary to keep its cruel and catastrophic world,” Koinuma says. “On top of that, we included visual flair that only a game can depict, and aimed for a fusion of realistic and anime-like design. It is a game that not only fans of the original manga and anime will enjoy, but action game fans as well.”

ATTACK ON TITAN is arguably the biggest anime and manga property right now. The graphic novel series – which tells the story of mankind’s fight against giant humanoid monsters called Titans – has sold well over 52.5m copies worldwide, 50m of which were in Japan. Now Koei Tecmo is preparing to give it the video game treatment with AOT: Wings of Freedom. The title is being developed by Dynasty Warriors makers Omega Force, and is set for PS4, Xbox One and PC. “The story focuses on the first season of the anime, but adds Titans and battles that have not yet appeared in the anime to make the game unique,” producer Hisashi Koinuma tells MCV @ Gamescom. “With regards to gameplay, there is the exhilaration from 42

SOUTH PARK PREVIEW

South Park: The Fractured But Whole MCV @ Gamescom goes down to South Park to have itself a time

The Fractured But Whole takes a satirical look at the superhero genre

2014’S South Park: The Stick of Truth arrived on PS3 and 360 four months after the PS4 and Xbox One launched, and as a result it really didn’t get the attention the game deserved. Lovingly written and drawn by the creators of the show itself - Matt Stone and Trey Parker - the game told the story of the New Kid who had just moved to South Park. The game was effectively an RPG with the kids playing a town-wide fantasy adventure, and featured many of the TV show’s famous characters - all while mocking and embracing video games. The Fractured But Whole takes place the very next day with the kids this time playing superheroes. Why? Because they want to create a multi-billion dollar movie franchise like Marvel. Yet disagreements emerge between the children over their strategy, Wednesday, August 17th 2016

and they fall into two factions - igniting a ‘civil war’. The game looks just like an episode of South Park and, unlike the first game, players can now play as a girl. The gender you choose will impact how the other kids react to you. The developer has also significantly improved the game’s combat system. Players can now take cover, use more environmental traps, and push and move enemies around the battlefield using attacks. All of this has resulted in a deeper and more strategic combat system, and is a big step up over the previous game. The game’s satirical humour is now aimed at the superhero craze dominating Hollywood, although video games will still be in for a gentle mocking, too. It’s out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on December 6th. 43

PREVIEW MARK MCMORRIS INFINITE AIR

Mark McMorris Infinite Air MCV @ Gamescom takes a look at the latest snowboarding release to hit shelves, courtesy of Maximum Games and developer HB Studios

Publisher Maximum says Infinite Air is the most authentic snowboarding game to date

to date’, with fluid controls and physicsdriven animations that allow for skill-based tricks, and let players to do what they want. With this level of focus on realism, media outlets have drawn comparisons between Infinite Air and EA’s grounded and realistic Skate series of skateboarding games. Trick animations are done via a physics model, but developer HB Studios also invited McMorris (and another pro-snowboarder) into the studio for the full motion-capture treatment, to ensure character movements are spot-on. This title launches later this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

NAMED after Canadian snowboarding superstar Mark McMorris, Infinite Air is one of the first big triple-A games since 2012’s SSX to let players carve up snow on the mountain. Players can take control of a number of well-known professional snowboarders in a series of real-word competitions, such as Slopestyle and Big Air. Gamers are also able to craft their own courses using the level editor, which allows fans to place features including jumps, cliffs, rails, ramps and slaloms. These levels can be shared online with friends. Publisher Maximum Games describes this as the ‘most authentic snowboarding game 44

PREVIEW YOOKA-LAYLEE

Yooka-Laylee Christopher Dring goes hands-on with Playtonic’s Yooka-Laylee, the project that raised a massive £2m last year on Kickstarter

Yooka-Laylee draws inspiration heavily from Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie

game’s story, which sees Yooka and Laylee attempt to thwart the evil Capital B and Dr Quack from absorbing the world’s literature. On the one hand (based on the demo we played), Yooka-Laylee lacks innovation - we immediately knew what we were doing as soon as we loaded it up. However, it’s been 15 years since we played a game like this, and in a market awash with angry action titles, Yooka-Laylee offers a fresh diversion. There are innovations, of course. Each one of the game’s worlds are expandable, so players can choose to either spend collectable ‘Pagies’ on making their favourite level bigger, or unlocking a new one. They can also acquire moves rather than simply being rewarded them, which allows players more flexibility in how they tackle the challenges. With a delightful soundtrack, beautiful environments and dialogue laden with dad jokes, Yooka-Laylee is a nostalgic return to a forgotten genre that we can’t wait to explore further.

ANYONE who has played 1998 platform classic Banjo-Kazooie will know exactly what they’re getting here. Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor in pretty much every way. From the familiar fonts, to the soundtrack, the way the characters talk, look... the gameplay mechanics. In fact, if it weren’t for the distinctly green and purple protagonists, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was the long-awaited Banjo Threeie (the proposed sequel to 2001’s Banjo Tooie). This isn’t a surprise. Yooka-Laylee’s lead artist, programmer and composer are all from that same Banjo team. Much like its predecessors, players control the dual heroes in a series of open worlds and collect items that will, eventually, unlock other levels. Challenges range from shooting at switches, winning races, climbing up mountains and navigating treacherous mine cart tracks. New weapons and abilities are unlocked as players progress through the 46
