EA: Titanfall 2 is Call of Duty’s true rival, not Battlefield CMO Bruzzo says Battlefield 1 is ‘a whole other thing’ and will bring in new fans by Alex Calvin CALL OF DUTY’S biggest competitor this Christmas is Titanfall, EA has told MCV @ Gamescom. EA’s CMO Chris Bruzzo said that Battlefield 1 may be the bigger game, but it is actually a very different beast Titanfall 2 is also being developed by Respawn, a company founded by former Infinity Ward staff – the studio that is making this year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. “I think that the style of play that Call of Duty has become known for is a great fit for players who should be playing Titanfall 2,” Bruzzo said. “Honestly, the people at Respawn were one of the originators of that style of play. It’s way more strategic and thoughtful. Even though they are all FPS’, they’re all very different. “Battlefield is going to find a big audience. The reception to some of the content has been so strong. I hope we bring people in to the genre that have never played before.”

PlayStack wants to ‘fix the word publisher’ Games veteran Harvey Elliott named CEO O Firm targets 20 games for 2017 by Christopher Dring A new UK games business has emerged at Gamescom that wants to ‘fix’ the word publisher in the eyes of developers. PlayStack is a fullyfunded UK games publisher. It wants to release six games this year and sign a further 20 in 2017. Its first game, the smartphone title Nemesis: Air Combat, is out this week. The firm says it is already in deep negotiations over a number of promising titles across all platforms.
The new business will offer developers support with marketing, PR, technology and funding. The team currently consists of 20 staff, split across the UK HQ and a Polish office. Former Acclaim, EA, BAFTA and Marmalade executive Harvey Elliott is PlayStack’s CEO. “Publisher is not a nice word,” Elliott told MCV @ Gamescom. “I’ve been in the industry my entire career, either making games or making tech for games. That’s why I wanted to be a publisher, because I know how I would have liked a
publisher to behave. I want to fix the word publisher. “I want to redefine what publishing means to people. As a developer, you want to be supported, you want to be funded, you want to have people that know what they’re doing in terms of bringing a game to market, and who can give you the right advice. My job is to provide that, get developers backed, get their messaging right, get their games right, bring them to market with a great marketing campaign, and deliver them to the world.”

Richard Garriott: ‘If crowdfunding failed, my career was over’ Industry veteran suggests that indie Kickstarter campaigns will pave the way for better publisher support by Alex Calvin ULTIMA creator Richard Garriott has said that his four-plus decades of working in the games industry would have come to an end had the crowdfunding campaign for Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues failed to hit its target. Pitched as a follow-up to his hit ‘90s RPG series Ultima, Avatar raised more than $1.9 million on Kickstarter in early 2013. “When we started down the crowdfunding path, I looked at it with great trepidation,” Garriott told us. “If crowdfunding didn’t work, my ability to go back to a big publisher and say: ‘help, back me building the spiritual successor to Ultima’ when the community wouldn’t support it, when I was taking it directly to them, would go way down. “If this didn’t work, I actually thought this literally could be the end of my career. At least Thursday, August 18th 2016
Big publishers weren’t interested in Shroud of the Avatar, says Garriott
for making the thing I really want to make.” In the wake of other successful crowdfunded RPG revivals, such as Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity, Garriott suggested that publishers may look 05
to work more closely with independent creators who establish themselves through crowdfunding. “It’s unfortunate that if you’re doing a Monument Valley or an homage to your previous work, the big publishers won’t support you,” he observed. “Once we prove that this works, they might want to come in. We’ve talked to big publishers about doing this and they weren’t interested because it didn’t fit the formula. If this is successful, then they’ll want to talk to us.”

Creative Assembly hopes to convert new RTS fans with Halo Wars 2 Developer promises new interface and controls for PC version by Christopher Dring CREATIVE ASSEMBLY says it will introduce a new interface and new controls into the PC version of Halo Wars 2, but insists the game will remain one of the studio’s most accessible strategy titles. Xbox marketing chief Aaron Greenberg told MCV @ Gamescom yesterday that he believes Halo Wars 2 will convert some PC gamers into Halo fans, but executive producer David Nicholson also hopes to turn Halo players into RTS enthusiasts.
“First and foremost, we want to make a really good RTS game,” he said. “The platform it is on comes secondary to that. The platforms themselves bring their own challenges, so we are trying to make an ‘RTS for everyone’. If you’ve never played an RTS before, I would encourage you to play Halo Wars 2. We still retain the depth, so if you are a big RTS fan, all of that stuff is there, but we are bringing a lot of accessibility.” Nicholson added: “There will be significant differences between the two platforms, certainly with the user
interface and the control schemes. So people familiar with RTS on the PC will feel very comfortable with how it is presented. “People who have played great Halo games but have never been attracted to an RTS game may buy this for the story and the Halo connection, but they will also be introduced to the genre. There are several different modes that gives you an introduction to the core mechanics of an RTS game.” Halo Wars 2 arrives on Windows 10 and Xbox One on February 21st next year.

Yooka-Laylee developers buoyed by Ratchet & Clank success Former Rare devs optimistic that platformers are coming back has given studio boss Gavin Price belief that there is more success to come. “Ratchet & Clank was just amazing,” he told MCV @ Gamescom. “It gives us a bit of hope that people are playing different things. Territory Report: Turkey Turkey is the biggest games market in the Middle East and Africa and saw 24.7 per cent growth in 2015. Marie Dealessandri reports THIS year, Koelnmesse has chosen Turkey as its partner country for Gamescom. According to data firm Newzoo, the Turkish games market was worth $755m (£573m) as of June 2016, and is the 16th biggest market worldwide in terms of annual revenues. Turkey is also the biggest market of the MEA (Middle East and Africa) region, and it has seen a 24.7 per cent growth between 2014 and 2015. Euromonitor reports that Turkish gamers are increasingly interested in digital games outlets, such as Steam. “Digital games stores enjoy the advantage of possessing a significantly wider range of video games, as well as offering competitive prices compared to physical retailers,” the data firm says. Chris Stanton-Jones, head of Catapult Business Solutions (which specialises in emerging games markets), confirms that physical sales are not the country’s area of growth anymore. Thursday, August 18th 2016
“The boxed software market has been pretty static over the last few years,” he tells MCV @ Gamescom. “It is dominated by PS4 and - to a lesser extent - PC, whilst Xbox One has struggled to gain much share. Digital segments, on the other hand, have seen substantial growth. It has real traction and is helped by the fact that - unlike in most other emerging territories payment for online transactions with credit cards is actually widely accepted in Turkey.” Stanton-Jones also adds that the price of boxed games are pushing players towards digital. “The main thing holding the boxed market back is the high retail pricing, which is one of the highest in the world. Some key titles this year are expected to cost more than £80 RRP when they launchdue to high import duties and channel margins.” THE TURKISH OPPORTUNITY The Turkish games market has also been influenced by the recent political instability in the country, Stanton-Jones says. 11

“Local reports suggest that in the two weeks after the attempted political coup, the boxed console market did dip down substantially,” he explains. “It seems to have recovered now, however, and console sales, led by PS4, are actually expected to grow this year. The games business always seems more crisis and recession proof than other categories and the current situation is no exception, with the upside of the currently enforced ‘state of emergency’ meaning that people are generally staying in more and playing games.” The Turkish market also represents a great opportunity thanks to the profile of its gamers, Stanton-Jones adds.
“The opportunity comes from the large and youthful population – the total at around 80m is similar to Germany’s and 25 per cent larger than the UK’s. Gaming, particularly PC online gaming, is highly popular with the masses.” In the end, Stanton-Jones remains optimistic for the Turkish games market, be it boxed or digital. “The boxed console sector should remain solid,” he concludes. “The PS4 business is strong and, due to the quota restrictions on many broadband packages, the preference is still for full games to be purchased in boxes in physical stores - although additional content via the digital PSN store is growing rapidly.” 12

KICKSTARTER INVESTIGATION
@ GAMESCOM SPECIAL INVESTIGATION
Low Kick The figures show that the amount of money raised by video game Kickstarters more than halved year-on-year. Is the platform running into issues once more? Alex Calvin speaks to the firm to find out

KICKSTARTER INVESTIGATION
K
ickstarter is now a staple of the games industry. It has helped bring us new innovations such as Oculus’ Rift VR headset. It’s helping studios raise money to bring back classic franchises such as Elite and Shenmue. And it’s aiding the creators of iconic brands, like BanjoKazooie, Mega Man and Castlevania, to make spiritual successors (namely in the form of Yooka-Laylee, Mighty No.9 and Bloodstained). However, things are looking troubled for the crowd-funding platform. According to figures released by Ico Partners’ Thomas Bidaux, the amount of money raised by video game Kickstarters has fallen significantly year-onyear. In 2015, large sums were raised due to the triple threat of Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee and Shenmue III which made $5.5m, $2.7m and $6.3m respectively. In total, video game Kickstarters made $20m in the first half of 2015; for the same period in 2016, that figure fell to a mere $8.2m.
“The numbers are kind of wobbly this year compared to last year,” Kickstarter’s games boss Luke Crane admits. “But there is one bright thread through it all – the amount of money raised by projects with funding goals between $50,000 and $250,000 is up over last year. That’s an area I am really passionate about. Those are the small indie teams that haven’t got a huge support network, who are coming to Kickstarter to get their first game off the ground without a publisher. We’re seeing great games funding this year, over and above what we saw last year.” THE BIG DOGS As well as being optimistic about games on Kickstarter, Crane also points to the fact that projects funded on the platfrom are now being picked up by major publishers. “We’re now at this great point where lots of fantastic games that have been funded on Kickstarter

KICKSTARTER INVESTIGATION
Flaming Fowl’s Oman (top) and Kickstarter’s Crane (above)
are being released by publishers,” he says. “E3 was a bumper crop of games funded on Kickstarter that have been picked up by Microsoft or Sony or Devolver or whoever.” Kickstarter seems to go through cycles. In 2012/2013 there were big projects like Oculus Rift, Elite Dangerous, Mighty No.9, Shovel Knight, Broken Age... the list goes on. By 2014, that fell away and people were saying Kickstarter was no longer a viable means of funding games. This notion was, of course, proved false by the aforementioned trio of Shenmue III, Bloodstained and Yooka-Laylee in 2015. “It undulates in peaks and troughs,” Crane says. “But we are on a good trajectory. Every time people freak out about Kickstarter, the system kicks back in and we go from one of those valleys into having a Shadowrun, Bloodstained or Shenmue. I’m confident, everything is going to be okay.” FABLE’S MISFORTUNE Despite Crane’s confidence, there have been some high profile failures on Kickstarter this year. Doom creator John Romero’s Blackroom was cancelled after it raised just 18 per cent of its aim. Meanwhile Flaming Fowl – formed by ex-Lionhead staff – axed its crowdfunding push for free-toplay card game Fable Fortune after it raised just 23 per cent of its goal. Given that it was a new entry in a popular franchise being made by established developers, this should have been an easy win. The free-to-play business model was one reason for it not meeting 16
Flaming Fowl’s expectations as this model makes backing a less enticing prospect for potential consumers. But CEO Craig Oman says that there were other issues. “One of the complications was that it was a Fable title,” he says. “There’s a lot of people looking for the next Fable RPG. “We had a hard time with the messaging around actually who we are, what we are doing and why we’re doing it. Some people made some assumptions about what the game was going to be based on very little and ended up judging the book by its cover.” Both announcing and launching the Kickstarter at the same time also created problems. “You can’t underestimate the importance of building a communty ahead of a Kickstarter,” he says. “You need big numbers on day one. People won’t back if they don’t think it’s going to succeed. You really need that momentum in the first few days to start to get people’s confidence.” Regardless of its failure to secure funding via Kickstarter, Fable Fortune will still be coming out after attracting private backing, which proves the platform works as a promotional tool as much as a means to fund projects. “It gave us a great opportunity to learn more about the game and the reception Fable Fortune is going to get, and it gave us the chance to sit and watch people on Twitch and see them play the game,” Oman says. “Doing a Kickstarter is a bit allconsuming, but it is rewarding from the level of interaction that people get with the players and fans.” Thursday, August 18th 2016

HTC on Fallout 4, big publishers and the cost of VR games It was revealed at E3 that Fallout 4 is coming to HTC’s Vive exclusively. Christopher Dring speaks to the firm’s head of VR content, Joel Breton, about VR’s battle to win over big publishers

JOEL BRETON, HTC INTERVIEW Could Bethesda’s Fallout 4 be a killer app for Vive? It sure could be. There’s 120 hours of content, and if people are after something that is going to give them repeat play, and let them play as long as they want to, then this is that sort of game. Ubisoft is also making some very exciting VR content. I have been lucky enough to check out many of its games and they are all fantastic. Those are just some of the companies leading the charge and we certainly applaud and give them all the help and support that we can. Is it important to get some of these games exclusive? We are not pursuing exclusive arrangements. They are bad for consumers. While it may be better for a platform holder to try and block content in the short term, what we find is that, long term, that may not be the best strategy, because we are trying to make VR really take off. We can compete on our platform features. We are encouraging folks to use Vive as the reference platform for development. If you are going to make a cross-platform piece of content, it is a much, much simpler task to de-feature and take things out, rather than add them in or upscale. It is far easier to go down than go up. We want folks to start with Vive, and then they are free to go to other platforms, and they will have a much easier job of doing that if they started at the top rather than at the bottom. Thursday, August 18th 2016
Ubisoft and Bethesda are supporting VR, but most of the big publishers are still waiting to see if it takes off, or are being a bit more cautious. What do you say to them? If this is potentially the future platform for your business, then right now is a great time to stake out your place in the market. If they wait and see, then they will be a follower again. What may end up happening is that new companies appear who are so aggressive, and get so good at VR, that these big publishers will end up with massive new competitors that they didn’t have before. That is a considerable risk. You don’t have to look that far back to see this happen, because it happened in the mobile and social space quite recently - to all of the big boys. Some of them had to go out and spend billions of dollars to acquire the leaders in the mobile and social space. What advice do you offer studios when it comes to how much they should charge for VR games? An easy way to look at it is: ‘What is the depth of your content? What is its replayability?’ If it is a single time thing that you play through and it like lasts 30 minutes, that should probably be at a lower price. If it has multiplayer, a story mode and 20 or 30 hours of content, you can price that a bit higher, because people will view that as being better value. Look at the engagement to measure the price. 19

Sing for the moment Wired, Nordic and Le Cortex have teamed up to bring We Sing back. Wired CEO Leo Zullo tells MCV @ Gamescom more Why bring We Sing back? Sometimes a break from an IP or franchise is needed. The people involved get stale. Ideas run out. The commercial landscape changes and things need a reassessment. That was the case with We Sing. The net result was that Wired, Le Cortex and Nordic Games (now together as We Sing Productions) were in discussions for a long time about direction and vision and wanting to deliver something that was groundbreaking and future proof. The result of that was We Sing Now – the first on-demand premium singing game – literally sing anywhere and on any internet enabled device. We have been working on We Sing Now for two years and are in a test phase at the moment, but are hugely excited by the prospect. We Sing is a family title. How do you think this market has been served on the current consoles up until now? The Xbox 360 and PS3
surprisingly didn’t have a casual tail like the PS2 did. Thankfully the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are features of the living room now. There isn’t a barrage of
Singing games don’t review well historically, but We Sing punches above its weight. badly made casual titles, but there is definitely room for fun, non-hardcore genres. At the end of the day, the consoles are entertainment 24
devices. Fewer but better quality titles are the way forward. What are your expectations for We Sing? We are expecting the first console version of We Sing to be a marker title. We are re-establishing distribution and PR channels, and so far the response has been overwhelming. A lot of effort has gone into the game, the songs, the look, feel, packaging, and peripherals. Traditionally, singing games don’t review well, but thankfully We Sing punched above its weight. All of us involved are excited, and also a little nervous, but that’s what drives us on. PREVIEW REGALIA
Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs Polish studio Pixelated Milk is playing homage to classic JRPGs with this new PC title. MCV @ Gamescom takes a closer look
Studio Pixelated Milk says Regalia is inspired by JRPGs like Persona, but with a Western twist
evasion – and as a result, Kay’s ancestors have left behind a convoluted mess (not to mention a massive debt). Oh, and what’s more, Kay is no hero. The game boasts of having more than 30 hours of content, with a town that needs managing (complete with buildings to construct, diplomacy to conduct and resources to gather). It is also a pretty game, with hand-drawn 2D backgrounds, which was one of the key selling points from the game’s Kickstarter campaign. The title also has professional voice acting and an orchestral soundtrack that has been put together by Game Audio Factory, which has worked on such games as Endless Legend and Endless Space. You can find out more about this game by visiting Hall 4.1 and booth D-030 at Gamescom.
REGALIA is an old-school JRPG (except, not made in Japan) that boasts everything you would expect, from robust turn-based battling to a huge cast of more than 20 characters to meet, recruit and befriend. The title is the brainchild of independent Polish studio Pixelated Milk, who funded the game’s creation via Kickstarter – where it raised over $90,000 (hitting all of its stretch goals). At the time it boasted of being a mix between Disgaea and Persona, but with a Western twist, and it will get a global launch with the help of Klabater – a new Polishbased games publisher (part of CDP.pl). In the game, players control Kay of House Loren, who finds himself unexpectedly in charge of a proud and ancient kingdom. The evil overlords have retired, the Great Old Ones have moved to pastures new and the crusading churches have switched to tax 42

ALICE VR PREVIEW
Alice VR MCV @ Gamescom delves into the mysterious world of an alien planet in Alice, a new game from Polish studio Carbon
Carbon Studio’s Alice VR is due out in October on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
The player will have to overcome a series of puzzles (designed specifically for VR) and make decisions in a bid to understand what has happened to the planet’s citizens, with those decisions impacting their future. The game’s Unreal Engine 4 technology has been put to good use to create a beautiful world to explore, with multiple distinct locations – from ancient cities to futuristic buildings. The game uses a first person perspective, with multiple paths available (offering some replayability). As for the name Alice, the game is somewhat inspired by Alice in Wonderland, with puzzles based around growing and shrinking. Players can even walk across walls thanks to variable gravity, which creates for a rather unique VR experience. Alice VR is due out in October this year.
WHETHER you believe virtual reality is about to change the world or not, there’s one thing you can’t really deny – there’s a lot of cool, unusual, original games coming out of this space right now. And a lot of it is emerging from the indie scene as well. One such game is Alice VR which, as the name suggests, is a PC VR game that utilises Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to tell its tale - although gamers who don’t quite have the cash to invest in such a device can still play this game without a headset. Created by Carbon Studio in Poland, Alice is an adventure sci-fi game built using Unreal Engine 4. The game tells the story of someone that has landed their spacecraft on an alien world in order to replenish supplies. However, this simple task is complicated by the fact that the entire planet’s inhabitants have disappeared. Thursday, August 18th 2016

PREVIEW LOADING HUMAN
Loading Human The first part of Untold Games’ episodic virtual reality adventure is set for launch this October. MCV @ Gamescom takes a closer look
The game encourages tactile interactions using PlayStation Move or Oculus Touch controllers
space in order to find a powerful energy source called the ‘Quintessence’. This, he claims, will save his life and let him cheat death. Untold also promises that Loading Human will feature difficult moral situations, which test how far you will go to save someone you love. Loading Human was initially funded via Kickstarter. The developers had a $30,000 goal in mind, but managed to raise $40,000 before its crowdfunding round ended. The title is being published by Maximum Games, with the first chapter set to launch on October 13th for PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.
COMING this year to PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, Loading Human is an episodic virtual reality title set in the 22nd century. Developer Untold Games has placed an emphasis on the tactility of the new medium, with players asked to use either PlayStation Move controllers or Oculus’ Touch gamepads to interact with the world. One example of this, cited by Untold, is the user operating a record player within the game using their ‘hands’ in VR to help set the mood with Alice, the protaganist’s love interest. Consumers play as Prometheus, a young astronaut who is asked by his dying father – a brilliant scientist – to travel across 44

PREVIEW RECORE
Recore Alex Calvin discovers what happens when the creator of Mega Man meets some of the developers behind Metroid Prime
Gamers play as Joule, a scavanger accompanied by her robot dog, Mack
mechanical creatures, who can help Joule in numerous ways, such as attacking enemies. In the demo MCV @ Gamescom played, we had to explore a network of caves and were greeted by a variety of nasties. The combat is heavily reminiscent of Metroid Prime – gamers simply lock onto targets and let loose. It’s a simple but smooth combat system, and the platform sections are equally easy to get to grips with. While Recore features some serious triple-A development pedigree, it is being sold at a sub-premium price point of £30, which may help this new IP reach a wide audience. Recore is being launched for Xbox One and Windows 10 on September 16th.
RIGHT, let’s get something out of the way now: yes, Microsoft’s Recore is being made by Comcept and Mega Man maker Keiji Inafune, the team that released this year’s pretty disappointing Mighty No.9. However, this project features a variety of development talent, including alumni of Metroid Prime studio Retro, now under the Armature moniker. Thus, Microsoft tells us, this is an entirely different beast. Recore feels more like the Metroid Prime games than Mighty No.9. Players are cast as Joule, a scavenger stranded on a desert planet called Far Eden, tasked with exploring an open-world. Joule is accompanied by Mack, a robotic dog, and later a variety of 46
