Remember the good old days when you could post a message on your social media page and reach all your “friends” or “followers”? That has basically come to an end. Social media platforms like Facebook and others have come to realize that they have amassed such an extraordinary number of users that they can actually control what you say and to whom. This has political and business ramifications. On the political end, they control (or have the ability to control) how far messages and ideas spread around the world in favor or against their own interests and agendas. On the business end, they have turned the once free networking service into a “pay to play” operation. If you’ve ever wondered how Facebook and other social media platforms make money, the answer is simple: advertising. The more people that these platforms have access to, the more money they make from businesses wanting to sell those people their products. This means that growing an organic audience is becoming more difficult by the minute. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest want you to pay them money to reach your own contacts. You can build your page to 10,000 followers but Facebook may show your posts to only a few hundred. Facebook intentionally restricts how many people your page can reach organically. They want you to click that boost button, and they want you to do it as often as possible. In fact, on average, brands only reach 6% of their fans without using paid advertisements. In other words, not only is it difficult to reach your ideal audience, but it’s almost impossible to get them to engage. Your only option is to run paid advertisements. When over 60% of Americans have Facebook accounts and more than 75% of them check their accounts multiple times per day, it has become evident that businesses should use these platforms to promote and sell their products or services. Despite all of the above, social media is remarkable at finding and targeting your audience.Even though you now have to “pay to play,” as long as you use your shekels wisely, you can use social media to advertise your products and grow your business. Furthermore, the advertising rates are still significantly underrated. This means that you better put as much as you can into building your company and your brand now before the price reaches its natural peak based on demand. The four things you want to focus on are: understanding your advertising goals, choosing the right social media platform, targeting custom and lookalike audiences, and running retargeting ads. In order to accomplish your desired results and take your business to the next level you can take the time and effort to learn the skills of the new trade or hire the services of a reputable company to do it for you. Either way, get started now while the barriers of entry are still low. Then, and only then, will you get the best bang for your buck in the amazing opportunity that social media offers. Wishing you all a Chag Kasher v’Sameach, Ariel Topf ariel@biznessmag.com

Your Home Away From Home: Why Owning a Vacation Home in the Galil Is an Excellent Investment You’ve worked hard, raised a beautiful family, and the time has come to take some time off to relax and kick your feet up in the country. Where do you go to get some fresh air, privacy and tranquility?
N
orthern Israel is a popular vacation destination, with its rolling green hills and proximity to many popular tourist sites. You can dip your toes in the Kinneret, take a hike in the Golan, visit kivrei tzaddikim and browse the colorful artist’s colony in Tzfat. Or stop for lunch in one of the excellent restaurants of Tveria and then take a scenic drive up to the Golan to watch the sun set over the Galil. There are many hotels and tzimmerim to choose from in the area, but have you considered the advantages of purchasing your own vacation home in the north? THE FINANCIAL ASPECT Tzimmers and hotel rooms are fun, but they can get pricey, especially if you are a frequent vacationer. Prices can range from around 600 NIS per night at a cheap, simple place, to upwards of 3,000 NIS per night for something fancy. Large families often need several rooms or tzimmers to accommodate them. It can really add up. When you own a vacation home, not only do you not need to pay each time you stay there, you can rent it out to vacationing families when you’re not there, making it pay for itself—and become a potential source of income. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE Have you ever put down a significant sum of money for a tzimmer or hotel room, only to
find when you get there that it’s far from what you expected and what you saw on the website, or be up half the night because the mattress isn’t what you’re used to? When you own the place, you don’t have to worry about whether the beds will be comfortable or the layout will be convenient—you get to decide how the place will be furnished and decorated, with your own tastes and comforts in mind. You get to choose the location, as well, making sure that you’re in a convenient spot—far enough from the city to enjoy the views and the quiet, but not so far that you don’t have easy access to the services and comforts the city provides. You decide what kind of community you want to be in during your vacations and what neigh-
ABOUT THE PROJECT MANAGER Josh Adler is an experienced builder and project manager with almost 30 years’ experience. His current project, Achuzat Ha’shvatim, still has plots available for those with the dream of a family vacation home in one of the most beautiful and affordable places in Israel. bors you’ll feel comfortable with. Hotels mean a lot of navigating common spaces with other guests. Between the lobby, the elevators, the hallways, the pool, and especially the noisy, bustling dining room, they’re just not ideal for a tranquil vacation with your family. All the more so if you have children and grandchildren in the family who need to take naps or find wide open spaces to run around and play. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting stuck in a hotel room with a sleeping baby while the rest of the family is downstairs enjoying dinner in the dining room, or not finding a private quiet spot to spend with your family. Tzimmers provide you more flexibility, but there’s still the matter of not knowing whether the place will meet your standards and needs—especially if you plan to cook for yourself, and you keep kosher. When you have your own vacation home, you get to arrange the place exactly as you need it, so you can focus less on logistics and more on enjoying your family. And then there’s the matter of availability: you never know when your favorite tzimmer or hotel will be all booked just when you need a vacation. Your vacation home, on the other hand, will always be there waiting for you when you want it. THE PERFECT PLACE TO ENJOY YOUR FAMILY If you choose to purchase a vacation home, such as those available at Ahuzat Hashvatim in Yavneel, you also won’t need to worry about the logistics of a multi-generational family vacation. The villas at Ahuzat Hashvatim have five bedrooms and four bathrooms, with an option to expand. These homes are also all on one level, with no steps, making them particularly appropriate for retiring couples who want to be sure the place will stay accessible if their mobility becomes limited later on. Life is short, and research shows that developing close and meaningful family relationships is one of the most important keys to a happy life. What a wonderful gift to give yourself and your family: a place to create happy memories together, a place that can be passed down to your children and their children, so your family will continue making wonderful memories and enjoying each other’s company in an idyllic setting—and will cherish those memories for generations to come.

Simchas I Rachel Schreiber Simcha Coach
Simcha Planning with Soul and Sanity Rachel Schreiber is a professional simcha coach who has developed a holistic approach to preparing for a wedding.
E
ach wedding is a world of its own with unique dynamics and details that all have to fall into place when the chatan and kallah finally stand beneath the chupah together. Preparing for a wedding can be very stressful, since the burden of meeting the desires of all parties usually falls on the shoulders of the bride and groom’s parents. The pressure is further compounded when various people offer you contradictory advice, leaving you stressed, confused and losing sleep as you try to keep your balance in the whirlwind of preparations. But what about enjoying the simcha? Living the moment? Appreciating and cherishing the event as a significant milestone and joyous occasion? “There is definitely an alternative,” says Rachel Schreiber. “But it requires you to be proactive and do something for yourself so that you can ultimately give a lot more to all the parties involved.” You may have considered turning to a professional for help, but hesitate when you think about the time you’ll have to set aside for yet more meetings, the additional money you’ll be spending and the energy it will take to discuss the details of the wedding with yet another individual. While
some individuals choose to brave it alone, others eventually reach the conclusion that they could really benefit from some assistance. For many people hoping to make it through this rite of passage into shver and shviggerhood in one piece, having an impartial experienced person to support you, may be just the solution. Rachel Schreiber is a professional simcha coach who has developed a holistic approach to preparing for a wedding. Rachel’s role isn’t to help choose table centerpieces, but rather to share her secrets of macro-management. And she is always just a phone call or email away to give her clients the practical or emotional support they need throughout the process, particularly when crises arise. Rachel’s clients shed light on how her organized, pragmatic

approach is so helpful: “Rachel was a calm and sturdy anchor during such an intense time. She let me unload the pressure and navigate the myriad of tasks in an organized way, giving me more time and peace of mind to appreciate the true essence of the occasion,” says one grateful mother. “She not only eases the burden, but also brings joy and meaning to the process,” echoes another. Rachel explains, “The ba’alei simcha do all the work. And although they do get credit for it at the end of the day, they are often lacking a toolbox for formulating a systematic plan, focusing on the details as well as the event as a whole, and feeling grateful for their role. They aren’t relaxed enough to see both the period leading up to the wedding and the wedding day itself as a time of opportunity and blessing, rather than an endless, laborious task list. My method of coaching teaches them how to tackle all the logistics, while processing the magnitude of the occasion and thereby being properly equipped to face everything it entails.” “We break down the event into manageable tasks, learn the mechanics of planning step-by-step, and amass tools for overcom-

ing the emotional challenges that accompany it,” Rachel explains. Her background in parenting, time-management and coaching enables her to offer clients a variety of practical tools, including Torah resources and hashkafic materials. This helps make the period leading up to the wedding an uplifting spiritual journey. For example, one of the exercises she does with clients is called “Expecting the Unexpected”. This focuses on the realization that despite all our planning, ultimately nothing is in our control. By walking clients through some realistic and common scenarios that could create a small hiccup or even spell disaster, she provides the tools to put “surprises” in perspective, let them go, and just get on with enjoying the simcha. Rachel also offers clients tools to find expression for all the emotional demands that arise during the wedding period. How to cope with your feelings when marrying off a child. How to transition into the My ultimate goal is new role of being parto ensure that after ents-in-law, and make all the arrangements a special connection with your new son or and logistics are daughter-in-law. And most importantly, how to truly enjoy and cherish this momentous event. Rachel knows that even with the best planning in the world, and attention to every minor detail, you will never achieve true satisfaction if you don’t have the emotional challenges under control. “The key to success is organization, empowerment and clarity in prioritizing,” Rachel sums up her approach. “If you know how to handle all aspects of the event in a methodical way, the basics will fall into place and you’ll be free to focus on the essence of the occasion. You should always keep in mind the holy aspects of this milestone in your family’s life. My ultimate goal is to ensure that after all the arrangements and logistics are taken care of, you are still left with enough mental and emotional fortitude to connect with HaShem as well as your family during this special time.”

Kfar Eden A New Affordable Anglo Community in the Burgeoning Negev Marketing has begun for a new upscale residential complex enabling you to own a home in Israel for as little at NIS 695,000!

randishing a selfie-stick and toting a bottle of mineral water, today’s new olim step off their Aliyah flight onto Ben-Gurion’s tarmac, and stride proudly and effortlessly into the country. But settling in Israel with a home of your own is often an elusive dream. While housing in general is expensive, a 25% minimum cash equity (required by law) makes it very difficult for most to obtain a home. Even those who can scrape together the required 25%, soon learn that in reality it’s even higher with purchase tax, lawyers’ and brokers’ fees, air conditioning and other home systems, kitchen and bathroom fittings, appliances, and other extras. “The Jewish Right of Return is also the right to own a home in Israel,” says Dov Jakobs, marketing manager of the Kfar Eden
project. “Kfar Eden, a new community in the Negev, will enable olim to afford a home in Israel with amazing amenities and quality of life” he asserts. Jakobs explains: “It’s natural for English-speaking olim to flock to existing Anglo strongholds such as Beit Shemesh, Modiin, Ra’anana or Efrat, but they often become disheartened with the high cost of housing. We’ve identified a region with enormous untapped potential and are developing a brand new project in one of Israel’s fastest-growing towns, Ofakim.” Kfar Eden is a meticulously-planned community that will include an incredible array For more information, email: info@kfareden.com Visit our website: www.kfareden.com/
of amenities, with 500 homes for sale. “For the first time in Israel, you can buy a home from as low as 695,000 NIS, with just 75,000 NIS as a down payment. Prices are all inclusive with a fully-fitted kitchen including premium-brand Bosch appliances, and inverter-technology air conditioning from Tadiran. And there’s more: Ofakim residents are eligible for tax-waivers. This can amount to 42,000 NIS a year in tax rebates, giving you even bigger savings in the long term.” From building quality and floor space, a Torah-centric community with Batei Midrash, Kollel, shiurim and various minyanim, a large community center, and a business center, Kfar Eden really does conjure scenes straight out of paradise. The planned sports facilities include a fitness center, two swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts, a running track, and a baseball field. A petting zoo, mini golf, games room and numerous playgrounds have been allocated as children’s recreational areas. Jakobs senses and preempts an important question: “We’re using the WeWork model to launch a full-service business hub to give residents the option of working close to home in a comfortable, convenient setting with all the facilities of an office. Employment opportunities are also available in Ofakim itself and a short drive away in neighboring cities like Beer Sheva. There is also a direct train to Tel Aviv, making central Israel more accessible. Most residents of Ofakim are Masorati, Dati and Haredi, with excellent educational institutions for each sector, various synagogues, and reliable kashrut certification.

Wooden Decks
A Beautiful Design Solution for Your Home and Yard
W
ooden floors, or decks, are a great aesthetic addition to the home or garden. Developments in design now allow for decks to be installed in almost any shape and for many different applications, including around the home, in business spaces, and to match with the surrounding environment. Technological innovations have ensured that wood products are much more resistant to weather conditions and deterioration than was previously the case. It’s ability to withstand decay over the years is greatly improved, and regular maintenance is much cheaper and easier than it once was. Wood is extensively used as a raw material for deck construction; it integrates naturally with the home garden and the natural environment and it provides warmth and beauty, style, is easy to maintain, and gives off a natural and luxurious look. Decks can bear a lot of weight, just like the floor in your home. Usually a deck will be raised from the ground and connected to the structure of the house. In this way, it expands the living space and creates a residential environment outside the home that harmoniously combines the interior of the house with nature. The transition between the spaces feels natural, just like moving from room to room inside the house itself. A deck will provide you with a cozy and comfortable seating area and a central space for hosting. Furthermore, a deck will match the design of your house—it suits al-
most any style! You can install a deck with geometric shapes in all or part of the garden space, and fit it around swimming pools, Jacuzzis, planters, walkways and more. Decks excel not just aesthetically, but in other ways, too. In Israel they are especially useful as an alternative to grass, because of water conservation concerns. Grass requires maintenance and irrigation, and decks are the most practical alternative, saving on ongoing costs as well. Wooden decks don’t heat up in the sun like other paving materials (marble tiles, stone, asphalt, etc.), so you can walk around barefoot without risking burns. Decks are also known for their ability to prevent slippage and are the ideal flooring type for courtyards and gardens where there is a pool or Jacuzzi. Before choosing the type of deck, it’s important to consider the terrain and surrounding environment, and especially ABOUT ELEMENT WOOD Element Wood Creations specialize in woodwork construction, design, and project management for every need. They provide shade and roofing solutions, deck and pergola installation, parquet, fences, landscaping, and even treehouses to order.

the appearance that is appropriate for your needs. Wooden surfaces can be installed in any shape and anywhere; on hard flooring, soil, or sand. A wide variety of types of decks are available. They can be ordered in different colors, styles, and textures. They also range in the level of quality and durability for different weather conditions (which may require different treatment methods). The type of wood selected for the construction of a wooden deck may affect the quality and price of the deck. For example, a softwood deck (e.g. pine) is more susceptible to damage from scratches and drag marks. On the other hand, a hardwood deck (e.g. teak, ipe/Brazilian walnut) is more resistant to such damage. Another thing to bear in mind is that a deck designed in a non-standard way or elevated significantly from the ground will, as a general rule, cost more. Therefore, when considering an unusual deck installation, it’s very important to consult with a professional who is experienced in woodwork, and conduct a cost-benefit analysis. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your deck. Choose the right material and design for your budget and lifestyle, then sit back and enjoy!
We care. Element Wood Expertise works with FSC green-standard materials upon request.

Bathroom Renovations All You Need to Know By Baruch Tenenbaum

hen we care for our bodies we feel good. But in today’s busy world, it’s easy to forget that we could do with a little pampering. While you could go to a spa every couple of months, that’s not always practical or cost-effective. With a little planning and investment, however, you can upgrade your own bathroom and enjoy the spa-experience at home, each and every day. Whether you’re looking at a full remodeling or just adding a couple of new features, here are some of the options available. Shower Options A good shower will invigorate you in the morning and relax you at night. With the right showerhead, you can transform your daily rinse into a luxurious experience. Rain showerheads are larger than standard and are mounted overhead. The water flow and pressure simulate the experience of showering in a soft rainfall. Rain showerheads are ideal for a relaxing shower experience, and as an added benefit, the size of the head ensures that the water reaches every part of your body. Another up-to-date shower option is the body-spray showerhead. These are mounted to the wall at several different levels and target different areas of the body simultaneously with multi-direction water sprays. Bathtubs Not just a place to wash, a bathtub is something to relax in; a place to enjoy a reprieve from the stresses of daily life as you soak. A quality bathtub also acts as a centerpiece for your bathroom that will lend it a unique feel. There are a variety of bathtub styles, shapes, and features available to match your specifications and taste. Regular
bathtubs can be fitted to utilize an alcove, or, in the case of drop-in tubs, fitted inside a framed enclosure. Alternatively, nothing beats the sense of old-time luxury evoked by a freestanding tub—provided you have the room for it—or even a clawfoot tub if you want to go for a real classic look. Whirlpool bathtubs (Jacuzzis) are jetted tubs that pump water to massage you as you bathe. With some models, you can swivel the jets to target a specific muscle group. Air jet tubs create air bubbles through many small jets. In contrast, water jet tubs have a few larger jets which move the water at high speed. Additional features can include multi-speed settings, micro-bubble jets, and even foot massage jets. Some models offer underwater LED lights that change color to suit your mood, and speaker panels so you can sync music from your computer and literally feel the vibrations! Home Sauna The health and stress-busting benefits of saunas are well-known; in fact they have been used in places like Finland for centuries. Surprisingly, installing an indoor personal sauna is not as expensive as you might think. Traditional saunas have

wood, gas, or electric stoves. Electric stoves are quick to heat up and are more popular because of their ease of use. Steam saunas use a lower temperature and higher humidity than dry saunas and produce moist heat. Alternatively, you might consider an infrared sauna, which uses infrared light waves to create body heat instead of raising the temperature of the air. In the end, the choice of sauna type often comes down to personal preference. Tiling and Flooring As many of us may remember, it used to be the case that every bathroom in Israel had the same tiling. Not anymore! There are almost endless options available nowadays, so here are some of my favorites: Use XL tiles for the wall. This will reduce the number of joints and require less grout, making the tiling very easy to maintain and giving a spacious appearance to the bathroom. Another trendy tiling option is the use of 3D like ceramic tiles. These are textured with interesting raised patterns and undulations. For the floor, you can combine large and small floor tiles and use different shapes, such as octagons and hexagons for a unique and attractive look. Remember, however, that tiled flooring can get very cold. There is almost nothing as pleasurable as stepping out of the bath or shower onto a warm floor, and underfloor heating is the way to go if you want that extra touch of comfort. In fact, the cost of adding underfloor heating is not that much, and will add to the resale value of your property. Because underfloor heating is also very energy efficient, you may find that you save between 10 and 30 percent on your monthly heating bills because it allows you to turn down your regular heating by a few notches. Don’t Forget the Toilet! Choosing the right toilet can really add to the overall design and comfort of your bathroom. Monoblock toilets have a sleek, modern, one-piece design. There are no cracks and crevices to trap dirt, and they look fantastic. Wall-hung toilets attach directly to the wall instead of resting on the floor. The advantage is that the tank is concealed within the wall cavity. This maximizes your floor space and makes it easier to clean underneath. The bathroom is a small room, but with some thought and planning it can be both aesthetically pleasing and functional for many years to come.

Home I Interview I David Shafner The Furniture Doctor
W
e sat down with David Shafner, better known as The Furniture Doctor, to find out more about his fascinating story, the ins and outs of furniture repair, and how he returns beloved family treasures to their original beauty. David, how did you get started in the furniture industry? My family has been in the furniture business since they immigrated to Connecticut from Europe in the 1890s. We have pictures of my great-grandfather, my grandfather and his brothers standing beside the words “Shafner’s Furniture” emblazoned on the side of their horse-drawn wagon. They opened the store in 1898 and it was in business until 2002! When I was a child, I loved to romp around the store and spent as much time there as I could. I joined the business in 1979. How did you go from sales to repair? When I first joined my father’s firm, he started me off in the prep department. The prep department is where the furniture first arrives at the store. The containers need to be carefully unpacked and every item has to be judiciously checked for any damage, nicks or scratches. Additionally, we had to make sure that any moving parts, such as drawers or doors, worked properly. I was trained to skillfully prep, fix and retouch the furniture. I then became the go-to guy who was sent to customers’ houses to fix any furniture that was damaged during the delivery or unpacking. While I was also trained in sales and every other aspect of the business, it was very obvious that I was particularly good with my hands, so repair and restoration became my niche. All the furniture we sold carried a lifetime structural and mechanical warranty, so having a skilled repair person on hand was a necessity. A lifetime warranty? That’s not something you hear often these days! When people bought from Shafner’s, we guaranteed the furniture for life, even if it was passed to their children and grandchildren. That was how business was conducted in the old days! In fact, I continue to honor that lifetime warranty to this day. You would be surprised how many clients I have been called to in Israel that own Shafner’s furniture. It’s always a thrill when I turn a chair or table over and see the Shafner’s label. The clients are always happy to hear that any structural or mechanical repairs are completely free of charge as we honor the Shafner’s warranty across generations and continents!
Nusrsing Your Furniture Back to Health
Congratulations, you have just inherited your great-great-bubby’s dining room set that has been used for countless shabbatot, smachot, chagim and family gatherings for generations. The sentimental value is immeasurable, but the wobbly chairs, peeling veneers and scratched table scream Lag B’Omer bonfire more than Rosh Hashana dinner.
How are you able to give a lifetime warranty on regluing? Many years ago, in Connecticut, we discovered a rare, unbelievably strong glue that wasn’t being used for furniture. This glue was stronger than anything we had used to build and repair furniture at the time. This is the glue I use to this day. When we reglue a shaky chair or an unstable table, we guarantee the repair on that particular part for the lifespan of the furniture. Whether you pass it on to your family or sell it, our transferable warranty goes with it. Interestingly, we have heard that people who have had their chairs or tables reglued by us, are able to ask for a higher price when they sell them. That is because the furniture is much stronger than it was originally, and because it comes with a transferable lifetime warranty on the regluing. Did you consider any other line of work when you made Aliyah? It was 1998, and for the first year after we came to Israel, I was commuting back and forth to work at Shafner’s Furniture in Connecticut. Our Aliyah was kind of sudden, so I hadn’t thought of anything else.
Then, while visiting neighbors and talking to friends here in Israel, I realized that many of them had brought over high-quality, American furniture, some of which now needed fixing. They were either sitting on chairs that were wobbly and dangerous, or they stored these beautiful pieces of furniture in their machsan because they could not find anyone they could trust to expertly fix them. It was then that I decided I was going to build my own furniture repair business right here in Israel, and I have never looked back. What sets you apart from other repairmen or handymen or even carpenters who attempt to fix furniture? Our high-level knowledge of furniture repairs, our lifetime warranty on regluing, and our expertise with fixing and restoring high quality or antique furniture. What constitutes the bulk of your repair work? We glue somewhere in the vicinity of 5000 chairs a year for customers all over Israel. We also glue tables, especially legs that have become loose, and we fix couches where the wood has broken inside.

APRIL 2019
I love the smile that appears on a customer’s face when they see the severely damaged, but cherished, furniture they can’t part with, beautifully repaired and restored.
Another big part of the work we do is table enlargement. We happened upon the idea almost by accident. When we started importing heavy-duty steel table mechanisms, instead of the typical wooden ones, to fix and strengthen weak tables, we realized that the tracks were so strong they could actually support extra leaves. People were thrilled with the idea that not only could we make their tables stronger, we could also make them much longer; sometimes, even double their size! Can you tell us about the cosmetic and restoration work you do? Simply put, we repair, refurbish, refinish, and restore. Our experts specialize in fixing wood surfaces with visible imperfections like simple scratches and gouges, to burns and water damage. We can also do the cosmetic repairs according to the customer’s budget. Depending on what a client feels comfortable spending, we can make a piece look brand new, we can refurbish it to make it look a lot nicer, or we can just correct the areas that bother the client the most. We also import and sell special furniture markers customers can use themselves to fill
in scratches and small markings from regular wear and tear. They come in three different varieties, many different colors, and are of the highest professional-grade quality. These markers are incredibly popular—we sell thousands of them! Over the years, we have earned an excellent reputation for our restoration and repair work. We get calls from shipping companies, insurance companies and moving companies all over the world. If furniture gets damaged during any stage of the shipping process, they call us in to assess the damage, and to do the repair work for the client. What is the most interesting or challenging restoration you have ever done? We received a call from someone in the Old City who owned furniture that had been in their family for 400 years. Needless to say, it was in terrible shape. Some of the chairs were in pieces and some had parts that had rotted so badly, we literally had to replicate them with new wood. The curved arms of the chairs were the most challenging! But in the end, we managed to not only fix the chairs, we restored them back to their original beauty. In another case, we restored and reworked an 80-year-old console, the kind that sits against a wall, into a retractable dining room table for ten. Not only was the structural work extensive, but this repair entailed huge amount of cosmetic work as well. The finished product looked magnificent, and it was ten times stronger than when it was first built. The customer was so thrilled, she tasked us with fixing and restoring seven absolutely gorgeous and unique antique dining chairs. Do you do all the work yourself ? Luckily, I have a talented team of restoration, cosmetic, and structural experts who know their stuff and help me achieve these incredible—almost miraculous, furniture transformations. Additionally, because we have been in the industry here in Israel for so long, we are also able to refer clients to the best and most honest experts in areas we don’t work in, such as reupholstering furniture.

What can people do to make their furniture last longer , or are those guarded trade secrets? Oh, not at all! I’m very happy to share. We are like doctors; we hope people don’t need our services, but when they do, we’re there for them. First, I suggest that people buy the best quality furniture they can afford; preferably American-made wood furniture from the 50s, 60s and 70s. This furniture will last much longer than anything you can get here, and it will also be easier to repair if anything breaks. Shop around and do some research. Don't necessarily take the advice of the salesman who will say anything to get the sale. Be a well-informed consumer! Secondly, don’t be swayed by fancy names or by the country the furniture comes from. For example, Israelis seem to have a love for Italian furniture because they equate Italy with high fashion, glamour and luxury. The problem is that, while these chairs may look good, they tend to fall apart very quickly. Often, Italian-made chairs have the fabric attached to the chair rather than to a removable cushion. To fix the chair, we must remove the hundreds of staples that hold the fabric in place, and then staple the fabric back on after the work is done. This adds up in terms of the labor required and makes what would otherwise be a simple repair, very expensive. This is also why we recommend people only purchase chairs with removable cushions. Thirdly, don’t lean back and rock on the legs of a chair, and remind everyone in your household (teenagers, anyone?) not to do it. We carry special tips to attach to the bottom of chair legs to make them glide easier on most floors. Not only do the tips reduce the noise the chair makes when you move it, they also extend the life of your chairs by minimizing the vibrations a chair receives that lead to premature loosening of the joints. What do you love most about your work? I would say the best part is when I hear from my customers that they are happy to be enjoying their furniture again; the items are stronger, sturdier and safer than before. I love the smile that appears on a customer’s face when they see the severely damaged, but cherished, furniture they can’t part with, beautifully repaired and restored.

ow that you’ve cleaned for Pesach, it’s time to clean up your insurance. In that spirit, we offer you the Egert and Cohen Pesach / Insurance Cleaning Manual. 1) Simplicity Do you have “layers” of insurance policies? Some from old places of employment, some from pesky telemarketing salesmen, some from the “Old Country” and even some from Egert and Cohen! It’s always a good idea to get all the paperwork together and have your agent or financial advisor look over it. 2) Pensions/Life Insurance Through a government website, we can now get all of the pension and life insurance policies from all your previous and current workplaces. We will study, advise, and give you a written report. 3) Health insurance This is an area that is full of confusion for most. What does Kupat Cholim give you and what do private insurance plans offer? At Egert and Cohen we advise all our clients to purchase a basic private health policy, covering operations overseas, transplants and medicine not covered by the

Kupah. Cost is reasonable and this fills in the gaps left by the Kupot Cholim coverage. 4) Mortgage insurance Check with your agent to ensure that you have the best deal here for both life and property coverage. 5) Travel insurance Here I would not necessarily go for the cheapest cover! The travel insurance through Kupat Cholim could be the cheapest but if you have a claim, who will deal with it? Who will issue the policy you for-
got about as you board the plane? You want someone who will personally deal with all your claims. 6) Motor Insurance This is probably the most competitive area of insurance in Israel today. It’s certainly worth comparing prices but at the same time think of the following scenario: It’s a rainy Jerusalem night and your car has broken down. Do you have an insurance agent who will answer (politely!) and help you? It might be worth the extra few hundred shekels. 7) Claims In the past month alone, we have had two clients who “lost” expensive diamond rings, were paid out, and then found the rings! (I’m not sure if it’s to do with Pesach cleaning or not.) Please check your own policy’s requirement for expensive rings—usually they have to be worn or be kept in a safe. 8) Life Insurance For all those with US policies, please get in writing from your company that you are covered: a) in Israel; and b) for active and passive warfare (or take out a slightly more expensive Israeli policy). We wish all of our friends and clients a Chag Kasher V'same'ach!

any of us take these tasks for granted, and never give much consideration to the complexity involved. If you’re the parent of a child with developmental delays, you may have given it a great deal of thought.
First Beginnings How Feldenkrais Helps Children with Special Needs Have you ever thought about how much fine-tuned coordination it takes to perform a simple physical task, like moving from laying down to a seated position, and from there to standing?
LEARNING TO MOVE The process of human development and the way we learn to interact with our environment is a slow and deliberate process of exploration and experimentation that begins the moment we start moving in our mothers’ wombs. While other animals are born with an instinct for the basic movements necessary for their survival, human babies are born with high potential, but poorly equipped for movement: they don’t have instinctual movement patterns the way animals do. It takes them years to figure out how to navigate their environments and become self-sufficient. Most developmentally normal children advance through a series of milestones which are roughly predictable but vary from child to child, both in execution and in sequence. They roll, crawl, sit, learn to fall and then stand and walk. Some children reach a sitting position before they can crawl, while others come to a sitting position from being on all fours. Even within each milestone, there are small steps of evolvement, based on the finer interaction with the environment. For example, a child usually reaches the standing position with his legs spread wide apart, and you may notice that his thigh muscles are quite chubby. Gradually, the child learns to improve his balance through his vestibular system (which controls our sense of where we are and our position relative to the floor) and his muscles; he’s much more able to regain stability and avoid falling if he wobbles or sways from the upright position. At that point, he no longer needs to place his legs that wide, nor does he require such strength in his thigh muscles. His legs are placed closer together and look slimmer, and his gait becomes smoother and more elegant. Growing from one milestone to another is an active, gradual, and playful process of learning by exploration and by trial and error. It is this process that builds the necessary connections in the brain. One should bear this in mind when trying to

help a child with special needs. No matter how big their difficulty, the caretaker’s first and most important role is to discern what works well for the child despite his difficulties, and then find a way to connect with that action and help the child process that action—which is the key to development. THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD The Feldenkrais method is based on the process of learning that begins when we are infants. Through a series of gentle exercises, participants practice and experiment with new patterns of movement that help them use their bodies more efficiently. For children with special needs, this method is especially helpful, because it helps give their bodies and brains a chance to practice types of movement that they were unable to achieve on their own, thus increasing their mobility and independence. Feldenkrais practitioners begin to work with children with special needs by observing the child’s abilities, focusing on what they are able to do, rather than on their limitations. These can be even minimal movements—emerging signs of potential actions. We use these emerging movements as a door, as a starting point, for the process of learning and developing. We create an environment where the child senses the outcomes of these emerging movements, both through physical sensations and through the practitioner’s reactions and communication. The practitioner then works with the movement by introducing variations, constraints, and other ways to facilitate further exploration. This approach helps put us in direct touch with the child’s nervous system, helping it integrate the movements into new patterns of action and communication. Parental participation in this process is crucial for a number of reasons. Parents know their child better than anyone else, and they can see things a practitioner can’t see. By involving the parents in the process, the practitioner helps them become more attuned to their child’s abilities. Furthermore, a parent can take an active role by keeping these issues in mind at home—not just active exercises, but also in choices such as which baby carrier to use, which toys to introduce and how to adapt the home environment to challenge the child to use more variations of movement. Through this work, we can help children improve balance, fine and gross motor skills and muscle tone; but it goes much deeper than that. The work is done
APRIL 2019
through fine-tuned communication, which inherently involves developing the child’s communication skills. Allowing the body to move with greater ease creates more cognitive and emotional flexibility, too. Sometimes, working on one particular movement will set off a chain reaction that improves a child’s function in many other areas.
We help children improve balance, motor skills and muscle tone; but it goes much deeper than that. WORKING WITH, NOT AGAINST, THE CHILD’S INSTINCTS Take, for example, the story of a baby brought to me around eight months of age with a diagnosis of mild hypotony. He was unable to crawl or roll from back to front, which is a significant delay for a baby of his age, and had been previously treated with physical therapy. The parents told me that they were advised to lay him on his stomach, prone, every day, to encourage him to lift his head and strengthen his back muscles. They came to me because the child did not like being on his stomach. He complained whenever they positioned him that way, and his development actually came to a halt as a result. First, I observed the baby as he lay on his back. He was communicating with me, smiling; he reached for a toy that I presented to him and played with it happily. Then I asked the parents to show me how they had been putting him on his stomach.

In that position, the child was stuck. He tried to lift his head from the floor, but it was almost impossible. He managed, at great effort, to do it for a moment, but then his head would fall down again. The parents explained that though seeing him struggle like this was difficult for them, they understood that they should insist, because it would eventually strengthen his muscles, leading him to be able to roll over. What they didn’t notice was that the child wasn’t actually using his back muscles in his attempt to lift his head. Only his neck muscles were working. The rest of his body was flat on the floor. I explained to the parents that the child must have a chance to coordinate the back muscles with the neck muscles, and in fact, the rest of his muscular system, to wire the nerve synapses to work together in harmony. The best way to start would be in the posture in which he feels most free—lying on his back. In this posture, he would be able to operate using the normal process of exploration so necessary for the following steps; this is how he will learn how to learn. I suggested refraining from placing him on his stomach until he turned there himself. Instead, we would focus on exploring the rolling from back to side, looking around with his eyes, and other available actions that would eventually bring him to lying on his stomach—but this time, using all the parts of his body harmoniously. From that point, he would continue naturally to the subsequent steps: all-fours, sitting, etc., all by himself. That’s how we proceeded. I worked with him twice a week for two months, always playing with what he could do and focusing on where he felt free and curious. Thanks to my professional experience, I notice details of small changes in a child’s organization of movement; that helps me see and focus on what does happen, rather than what isn’t happening yet. Within a few weeks, the child was harmoniously and happily rolling onto his stomach—but this time, he reached that position with his head already vertical, as a continuation of a long curve along his spine. He was supporting himself very little on his hands, so he was free to lift them and use them to play with toys as he lay on his stomach. At the same time, he was able to roll back onto his back whenever he liked. From that point on, we worked less frequently together and he soon caught up developmentally with his peers.

Lost a Tooth?
Dental Implants to the Rescue!
H
ave you ever had a nightmare about losing your teeth? If you have, you’re not alone; this is a type of anxiety dream that is extremely common, just like dreams about falling. No one knows exactly why we have these nightmares; a 2018 study suggested that it may happen because of dental irritation and the way our brain interprets that sensation while we’re dreaming. In any case, it’s clear that we find these dreams disturbing, because the idea of losing our teeth is a scary one. Why is that? Well, first of all, depending where the missing tooth is, it can be unsightly. The gap could cause neighboring teeth to move, and this could change your bite and cause food trapping, which is uncomfortable and can negatively affect the health of your other teeth. Losing several teeth may affect support of the lips and cheeks, which makes people look older than they are. A changing bite might lead to jaw problems and discomfort as well. Most of all, until modern times, loss of a tooth was permanent: you could never grow one back, and any problems mentioned above would persist for the rest of your life. Thankfully, in our day, we no longer have to live in fear of these nightmares coming true. Even if we do lose a tooth, we have a
way to replace it: the dental implant. A dental implant is essentially a screw placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a tooth. Once this screw is in place, the dentist can replace the top part of the tooth with a crown—or, if necessary, a bridge or dentures, using several implants. Implants are made of titanium. Titanium has two advantages: it is corrosion-resistant, and it has a very high strength-to-density ratio. This is also the reason titanium is used for hip and knee replacements.
ABOUT DR. GIL GARALNICK Dr. Gil Garalnick has been serving the Beit Shemesh community for 12 years. He offers general, cosmetic and implant dentistry. His uncompromising professionalism and pleasant manner makes him one of the most sought after dentists in the area. To book an appointment or for a free implant consultation call: 02-992-4267 Located at Park Center, 3rd floor, Ramat Beit Shemesh Alef
Dental implants are a well-established treatment method that have been used for over 30 years. Their longevity depends to a large extent on how well they are maintained, both by the patient and by the patient’s dentist. In ideal conditions, implants can last for decades. Once an implant is inserted, it needs to fuse to the jawbone to become stable. This process, called osseointegration, involves living bone cells attaching to the artificial implant. To allow osseointegration to occur, it is often best to leave an implant unloaded (without installing a crown) for 3-4 months. Sometimes, though, it is possible to immediately load an implant with a crown. Usually, in cases involving front teeth, we will find a temporary solution to ensure that the patient doesn’t need to walk around without front teeth—often using neighbouring teeth for support. Implants can replace a single missing tooth or a whole arch of teeth, for which four to six implants might sometimes be sufficient. Whether the implant will be successful depends on a number of factors. You can have implants placed at any age, but there needs to be a sufficient amount of bone present to accept the implant, and that bone needs to be healthy and strong enough. Smoking and a vitamin D deficiency, for example, may impair the bone. Other factors depend on the skills and knowledge of the surgeon: placing the implant with too much force, or overheating the bone when preparing the implant site, may negatively affect the success of the implant. Lastly, good oral hygiene is imperative. The procedure itself is usually painfree, thanks to local anaesthetics, and it often takes around the same time as having a large filling placed. Post-treatment pain is usually minimal, and patients can usually return to their normal routine the following day. Dental implants, when maintained as one cares for their teeth, provide stability and confidence in your smile. Therefore, the long-term value of dental implants can often exceed traditional treatment options. You may not be able to get rid of the losing-teeth nightmares, but at least in waking life, you can rest assured that if that scenario does come to pass, modern dentistry has you covered.

Your Child’s Teeth By Dr. Eli Prenzlau D.D.S.
Y
our child’s teeth are important for their health and well-being. Without healthy teeth, your child wouldn’t be able to chew or speak properly! Although some people might downplay the importance of baby teeth since they will eventually fall out , the truth is, these teeth are crucial—not only for your child’s current health and comfort, but also to hold adequate spaces for the permanent teeth that will grow in their place. Teething Baby teeth normally emerge between 6 to 10 months of age, though they may come in earlier. The telltale signs of a teething baby are fussiness, excessive drooling, as well as vigorous chewing, which helps relieve any discomfort the baby might be feeling. There are many teething toys available that are safe for a baby to chew on. I recommend the hard and solid types. If your baby is really in pain, consider a safe dose of children’s Tylenol, but steer clear of any topical products that contain benzocaine. The latest update from the FDA states that these products can make your baby sick, and therefore should not be used to reduce pain during teething. Tooth Brushing When is the best time to start brushing children’s teeth? Before the teeth emerge, consider wiping the child’s gums with a clean, damp washcloth or gauze pad after feedings. Then, when the first tooth appears, the parents should brush the child’s teeth twice a day, with a soft child-sized brush, using no more than a smear of toothpaste—the size of a grain of rice. Children older than three years of age can use a drop
of toothpaste about the size of a pea. Older children will be able to handle tooth brushing on their own, but should be taught by their parents, and then monitored, both to observe their technique, and to make sure they use the right amount of toothpaste, spit out as much as possible, and not ingest too much toothpaste. Fluoride Fluoride is a chemical that keeps the outer layer of the teeth strong. There are multiple ways to help your children receive an adequate amount of fluoride. One way is to use fluoridated toothpaste when brushing. Another way is by drinking fluoridated water. Your dentist can help you find out if the water in your area is fluoridated. If it isn’t, your dentist may recommend fluoride tablets or drops to help your child get the most benefit from fluoride. Sealants Sealants are highly recommended once the first permanent teeth emerge. These are usually the child’s 6 year molars. A dentist
ABOUT ORAL HEALTH CENTER Dr. Prenzlau’s Oral Health Center in Jerusalem offers the full range of dental and oral health treatments, including oral rehabilitation, implants and esthetic dentistry. They are located on Rechov Azza 26 in Jerusalem and can be contacted at 02-566-0669.
can apply these bonded sealants directly to the grooves of the child’s teeth, which will help prevent deeper cavities from forming in the future. Sugary Snacks and Drinks Teeth are covered with a thin sticky film of bacteria, which produces acid when exposed to sugar. This acid is what causes cavities. Sugary drinks and juices should be avoided during a baby’s first year. These may easily lead to what is known as “baby bottle syndrome”, a form of childhood tooth decay caused by prolonged exposure to sugary liquids, especially overnight. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends not feeding young children juices throughout the day, and certainly not giving them “sippy cups” or bottles filled with juice in bed. Even drinking a milk bottle at night can induce “baby bottle syndrome”, so only give your baby water bottles if they need to drink as they are falling asleep. Using a juice bottle as a pacifier can also be problematic, as it increases the risk of tooth decay at a very young age. People are also unaware that cavity-causing bacteria can be passed from the mother (or caregiver) to a baby through saliva. Sometimes a mother might put her baby’s feeding spoon or pacifier into her own mouth (to clean it), thus unwittingly passing bacteria to her baby. Visiting Your Dentist Generally speaking, children should see their dentist sometime after their first tooth comes in, so the dentist can check that the teeth are developing on schedule. The dentist may also: 1. Perform an oral examination 2. Asses your child’s risk of tooth decay 3. Make sure that habits like thumb sucking or pacifier use are not affecting your child’s oral development Conclusion Taking care of your child’s baby teeth is extremely important. Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they pave the way for healthy, properly aligned permanent teeth and help with proper chewing and healthy digestion. Baby teeth also make it possible for the child to speak clearly. See your dentist early enough to avoid complex problems in the future, and to get your children started on the path to good and preventive oral health routines, that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

Ten Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture
n traditional Chinese medicine we, the practitioners, inspect the face as it reflects what’s going on inside our bodies. When we detect an internal ailment on a patient’s face, we will treat the body and internal health will be mirrored externally. The permanent solution to breakouts or sagging skin is a healthier, more balanced body; and this can be achieved through acupuncture. Cosmetic acupuncture is also sometimes called an acupuncture facelift. It’s the use of traditional acupuncture to slow down the signs of aging, tune up your skin, and bring back a youthful glow to your cheeks. Cosmetic acupuncture is a great choice for those who want to give their skin a little boost, but don’t want to inject Botox or take the surgical route. It also works well for those who want their skin to look its best, since it combines traditional acupuncture points on the body as well as problem points on the face. HERE ARE TEN BENEFITS OF COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE: 1 Cosmetic acupuncture improves the circulation to your skin. Your circulation tends to get a little sluggish as you age. Acupunc-
ture brings the collagen and elastin back to where you want it—in your face and neck. 2 The increased circulation tightens and tones your skin resulting in better skin tone, fewer fine lines, and even some lift in your neck or baggy eyes. Acupuncture also helps relax the deeper tissue muscles that may be tight, and tighten the ones that are RACHEL KOENIGSON Rachel Koenigson understands that life can be dynamic and stressful. loose. It’s really good for lifting and sculpting the cheeks and jawline, and even for lifting eyebrows and drooping eyelids. 3 It’s safe. There are no side effects, other than the occasional bruise, which heals in less than a week. You don’t have to worry about scarring, lumps, or botched procedures. 4 The sessions will benefit your overall health as well. During treatment, other health concerns will also be addressed. Your skin won’t improve if your health is suffering. Acupuncture boosts your complexion by triggering local healing processes in your face and by recalibrating bodily systems. 5 Cosmetic acupuncture is effective in treating acne, eczema, and rosacea. Acupuncture rebalances the body, which calms breakouts, whether they are chronic or caused by monthly hormonal fluctuations. Rosacea, according to Chinese medicine, is often a result of digestive issues and by clearing up these issues; the treatment will minimize redness and irritation in the skin tissue. 6 It’s relaxing. You may not think that an acupuncture treatment can be relaxing, but it can be and it increases the release of endorphins to your brain which means that from your treatment to a few days after, you’re likely to feel mellow, rested, and less stressed. 7 Cosmetic acupuncture is chemical-free. There are no acid peels, Botox, or injectable fillers involved in the process. The creams that are used are all natural and derived from herbs that have therapeutic benefits. 8 Cosmetic acupuncture helps you to depuff. A swollen face could be a sign of internal problems that acupuncture is designed to address. Digestive problems, allergies, or poor lymphatic drainage, may lead to face puffiness. Acupuncture will not only correct the puffiness but will heal it from the inside out. 9 The effects of cosmetic acupuncture can last years with just minor tune-ups needed every six months or so after the initial 10–12 weekly treatments. 10 Cosmetic acupuncture doesn’t have a recovery time. You can have a treatment at lunch and head back to work glowing and feeling relaxed. Health & Wellness I Eliyahu Shechter Naturopath I Expert
The Real Cause of ADHD
By Eliyahu Shechter
A
DD, ADHD, hyperactivity. Who hasn’t heard these concepts? Until around 20 years ago, they were not wellknown, and very few people were diagnosed with these conditions. Today, Ritalin use is skyrocketing. Many children are diagnosed with attention deficit disorders, due to a difficulty to sit still and listen properly in the classroom. In many cases, this expresses itself through hyperactive behavior, restlessness, impulsiveness, lack of patience, lack of discipline, and so on. I won’t get into a discussion of the merits or lack thereof of Ritalin; I’ll only say that the goal of Ritalin treatment is not to treat the child, but to give him the ability to sit quietly in class for a few hours, until the drug’s effects wear off. Naturopathy has a very different approach. The most fundamental principle of nutritional medicine is that the purpose of food is not simply to make us feel full, but rather to nourish the systems in our body so they can function properly. If they don’t function properly, the first thing to examine is whether the food we are consuming is appropriate for our bodies. And if it is not, we must ask ourselves why, and adjust our diets accordingly. There are a number of foods that stimulate the nervous system and impair our
ability to focus, and in some children, these foods cause a feeling of restlessness. For example, chocolate and other sweets are known to cause hyperactivity. A sixth-grade boy was once brought to my clinic. It was not hard to see that he suffered from hyperactivity. He couldn’t keep his hands to himself or sit still in his chair, and exhibited many of the classic behaviors of ADHD. I was told that he had also behaved violently in school. During my assessment, it became clear that he was consuming inordinate amounts of pastries, chocolates, Coke, and other foods and drinks full of sugar. What was interesting was that the child himself felt bad about his situation and did not want to take Ritalin. His treatment involved building him a nutrition plan that excluded sugar from his daily intake. We also minimized his consumption of pastries made from gluten, which more and more studies have shown has a negative influence on brain function. I also recommended adding a daily supplement of Omega 3. Within three weeks, the child was unrecognizable. He was completely transformed. In another case, the parents of a 5-yearold brought their child to me after they noticed that he was exhibiting restless behaviors after eating sugary treats. They knew that two hours after consumption of sugar, they would need to take their son out to an open field to work off all his energy, because he was unable to sit and play or behave calmly.
ABOUT ELIYAHU SHECHTER Eliyahu Shechter is a naturopath with 15 years experience. Among the techniques he uses are Sujok and iridology. Eliyahu sees men, women and children at his clinic. He also lectures at various colleges and to the general public. This phenomenon has been studied, and research has shown that children react to sugar differently than adults do. One study compared the responses of children on one dose of sugar to adults on the same dose. Their glucose and adrenaline levels were measured every half hour for five hours. The tests showed that the blood sugar levels of both the children and the adults stayed within the normal range. However, the children’s adrenaline levels were ten times higher than normal for up to five hours after the dose of sugar. That is, children who have consumed sugar are not in control of their physiology. There’s no point in trying to “educate” them to behave calmly in this situation. It’s not them, it’s the sugar and the chemical chain reaction it causes that influences their behavior. Other food components can contribute to hyperactivity as well. Aside from the sugar, chocolate also contains a chemical called theobromine—a powerful stimulant which, in excessive amounts, can cause restlessness, anxiety, and hyperactivity in sensitive individuals. Dyes, colorings, and flavorings often found in abundance in children’s snacks may also increase restlessness. Up to this point, we have discussed the foods being consumed in excess that may contribute to the problem; but it’s important to also consider what foods are missing from our diets. When children fill their bellies with junk food and empty carbohydrates, they don’t have room for high-quality foods that actually nourish their bodies and nervous systems. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and almonds and other nuts contain important chemicals such as vitamins and minerals. B vitamins, for example, are essential for healthy function of the nervous system, and have a calming effect on the body. Magnesium is also crucial for neurological health and allowing the body to relax. Many children don’t eat enough healthy oils, such as Omega 3, also essential for brain function. Lacking these components, the brain and nervous system enter a sort of state of starvation, and the result is behavioral dysfunction. How can we expect a child to sit and study calmly when his nervous system is starving? It’s labeled as an attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity when really, it’s nothing more than a nutritional imbalance causing chemical chaos in the brain.

Health & Wellness I Dr. Sara Genstil PhD Psychologist
Family Matters: Shalom Bayit and Fertility Many of us live in communities where building a bayit ne’eman b’Yisrael and rearing a large family are central values and mitzvos held in high regard. The problem begins when either of these don’t exactly go as planned. If the former isn’t functioning properly, the latter is negatively affected, and vice versa.
E
very individual is part of various systems, such that the degree to which these systems are healthy or unhealthy stems from the role of each individual in it.” says Dr. Sara Genstil, who holds a Ph.D in Psychology and specializes in Intersubjective Systems Theory. “Family and marriage are complex systems,” she adds. “If a couple hits a rough patch in their relationship, it means that both spouses have contributed to the kink in their system.” “In a marriage, each spouse brings his or her very being,” says Dr. Genstil. “Each spouse’s perception of the world is based on experiences from early infancy and throughout life, which shape their individual world view (defined as their “organizing principles”). In order to improve their system, we need to identify the organizing principles (both from the distant and recent past) that influence each spouse’s behavior—especially in cases when this behavior causes friction or conflict—and work on changing them.” Healing a relationship means healing the system that was fashioned from both spouses’ input. Having a full understanding of and responsibility for this input is essential for change. Alter one part of the system and the entire system will be affected as a result. Dr. Genstil’s Marriage Counseling Treatment Model allows couples to share feelings and thoughts, build trust, learn how to be responsive to each other, accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and thus facilitate change. Over the years, Dr. Genstil has worked with numerous couples who had trouble conceiving. “Unexplained infertility is a condition that I have encountered throughout my ca-
reer and is the diagnosis given to about 25% of couples who are having trouble conceiving after all medical problems ruled out." In addition to various other professional roles, Dr. Genstil has served as a psychologist in a fertility clinic and has developed a Fertility Treatment Model based on the principles of Intersubjective Systems Theory. Believe it or not, extreme tension and stress can impact fertility for both men and women. Research has found that pregnancy is much more likely to occur when couples reported feeling happy and relaxed than feeling tense or anxious. A whole slew of hormones including adrenaline and cortisol—released naturally during stressful times—signal to the body that conditions are not ideal for con-

She has experience working with clients both privately and through organizations such as The Ministry of Defense and National Insurance, working with terror victims and their bereaved families. ception. Adrenalin inhibits women from utilizing the hormone progesterone, which is essential for fertility, and causes the pituitary gland to release higher levels of prolactin, which may prevent conception. Sometimes, stress can be caused simply by a demanding job. “Our bodies haven’t changed over time, but stress levels have. Combined with the ticking of women’s biological clock, people put unrealistic demands on their bodies, and place their sense of worth in the hands of achievement or social acceptance,” she explains. A tense or unstable home environment—or social pressure to have children—can exert pressure on a marriage. A prolonged inability to conceive can exacerbate an already strained situation, which then intensifies the stress. Through therapy, Dr. Genstil’s Infertility Treatment Model helps couples identify the subconscious issue that is sabotaging their fertility. “First we recognize the organizing principles (such as compromised shalom bayis, past traumatic experience such as a miscarriage, anxiety regarding the responsibility of becoming a mother, depression or other unknown emotional issues) and their impact on a couple’s behavior and physiological functioning. We confront a couple’s confusion, sadness or frustration, enable them to let go of their former organizing principles and replace them with new ones.” Eventually, the treatment process allows couples to build the emotional readiness to become pregnant which affects the rest of the system—including removing barriers for healthy physiological functioning and cultivating the relationship with their spouse. Often well-meaning friends or family offer counterproductive advice by telling you to “just relax” or “pull yourself together.” In fact, this could generate even more stress. “Telling a person to calm down rarely results in them actually calming down,” says Dr. Genstil with a smile that says she’s been around the block more than a few times. What she does recommend, however, is for both spouses to look into their own lives and try to find tiny spaces where they can each give their body and mind a respite from the stresses of everyday living and family demands. “Don’t just try to relax because you think that it’s going to help your fertility but relax because it feels good. When you feel good, you’ll see your relationships from a new perspective and you’ll be better equipped to work on your input in your various systems.”
Is your child consistently left out of games or conversations and doesn’t know how to join or shmooze with others? ••• Is your child smart, personable and mature but never gets invited over by friends? ••• Did you move to a new apartment, but it’s already two years and you can’t seem to connect with the neighbors? ••• Is your daughter leaving for seminary but is scared she will not develop any friendships? ••• Are you going to shul or riding the bus, sitting next to the same people day after day, but have no idea how to communicate with them? ••• In short, do you see the world moving around you, with people connecting to one another on all levels and participating in life, while you seem to remain on the sidelines?

WHO IS MRS. SHAINDEL COHEN?
Mrs. Cohen is an internationally acclaimed educational consultant and social skills specialist who has lectured in Israel, England, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the United States. She specializes in nurturing the shy and selective mute child and has designed and taught programs related to this field such as communication and friendship issues, assertiveness training and self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution and much much more. She is available to work with children, teens and adults on any related social skills challenges. Question: Does my child really need friends? Aren’t her sisters or brothers enough? Answer: When trying to create a barometer of “who is most likely to succeed in life,” people often think that externals are most important. What kind of car you drive, how big your house is, what kind of (designer) clothes you wear—these are the things that attract people. Others think that academics are the most important factor in determining future success; the straight-A student is guaranteed to be the future CEO. Yet others think that a family’s name or yichus is the most determining factor. In reality, study after study has shown that the ability to get along with all kinds of people and make friends wherever one goes is the single most important area which determines one’s future success in life. So the basic answer to the above question is yes, we need friends besides our siblings. Question: What are the advantages of having friends? Answer: In short, friendship is earned, while family just happens. Friends provide an external validation of who we are, while with family, the love is more apt to be unconditional. A good friend is a sounding board for us, and helps keep us in balance. With friends, we get to appreciate people who are different from us, and thus, our horizons are broadened. People without friends are more known to drop out of school and engage in alcohol and substance abuse. People without good friends are very often lonely adults. Chazal tell us “Kneh licha chaver,” but some people struggle to do this. Chazal also tell us beforehand, “Aseh l’cha rav.” Some people need a rav, a mentor, in order to learn how to make a friend, how to join a group or a conversation, how to bond with another. I’d be happy to give you some tools to enable you or your child to find the right friends and vastly improve your quality of life!
