What skills are important for a successful career in fashion? The most important skill is the ability to not only adapt to change, but to fully embrace it. The ability to see something emerging is also important - whether it be new details, new shapes and textures, or even the next big color for the season.
How important is social media in connecting with your customer? Social media allows us to connect with our customer on a personal level. It allows our customers to have a close relationship with the brand, which in turn creates endless opportunities.
What is inspiring you right now? The playfulness of fashion that is becoming more and more predominate inspires me. Women are taking more fashion risks which is opening up so many new doors for us to explore. In today’s world we are able to be inspired globally. We can find inspiration from a blogger in Japan while sitting in a café in New York!

Are you self-taught or did you study fashion design? I am self-taught. I grew up in the beauty industry and am actually a hairdresser by trade.
What’s your greatest strength? I always strive to be humble towards everyone and about everything. We have been so blessed with the positive response towards the brand. I am in awe every day as I watch my vision grow.
Who or what has been your greatest fashion influence? I wouldn’t say there is any one person or location that influences me. I take inspiration from everywhere, usually the most unexpected of places.
What is your personal fashion philosophy? While this isn’t directly tied to fashion, it is a personal quote I live by: “Put your heart into your product and what you believe. Try to make people happy and you’ll always be successful.”

She made jewelry as a hobby for twelve years before starting Ornamental Things.
Sarah Cavender
Sarah Cavender Metalworks pieces are made in the USA and handcrafted in their studio in Oxford, Alabama by local artisans under Sarah’s direct supervision. Their focus is made in the U.S. of primarily domestic materials. They do not simply assemble components, they actually make many of their leaves and flower petals from pieces of metal wire cloth, hand form them, solder, plate and hand paint each piece.

What inspired her to launch this collection... I spent the larger part of my professional career in marketing, advertising, and PR. This afforded me the unique opportunity to work in many facets of the industry (commercial real estate, retail, and fashion marketing/branding) respectfully. That… along with a true love for both the business AND creative, launching FINCH seemed like a natural transition.
The best career advice she’s ever received... “Just do you.” Go with your gut and stay true to what feels right.
On the success of her line... I truly love what I do and it feels great to see each collection through. If we can continue to be well received by the industry and bring a little something special to the table each season, then we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.

“Laugh more, gripe less, ignore critics, order dessert, love life” are the words that embody the brand and how I want to live life. Brought up believing I could fly anywhere, anytime - both physically and mentally, my parents are aesthete intellectuals who had an enormous library in the center of our house overflowing with books. My love for ideas and beauty are in my DNA.
The most exciting milestone for the brand... At the beginning, it was introducing flower baskets. Then, of course, adding clothing to the line was so important and created a new business. We now have four of our own retail boutiques, and more on the way. Creating a store is all encompassing – it’s all in the details. Designing stores is one of my favorite things. And I like new. New is what drives designers.

Kollontaï
Gabrielle Tousignant chose the name Kollontaï to pay tribute to Alexandra Kollontaï; a pioneer of women’s rights in Europe and the first woman to be named ambassador of a European country. She was also responsible for the creation of International Women’s Day. Alexandra Kollontaï represents the determination and freedom of thought that Gabrielle strives to apply to her life and the brand is meant for a strong woman who takes her rightful place in our society.
Yala Designs
Recycling, reusing and capturing the energy of the sun. As members of Solar Pioneers, a program to increase solar generated electricity city wide, Yala Designs is using the sun to meet a portion of their energy needs. As a certified Green Business, they continue to conserve resources, limit waste as well as provide education for employees and the public.

MIXING BUSINESS What do you look for when picking up a new line? I’m mostly interested in creating a seasonal range that is fresh, exciting, and unique to Calico. Any store can stock name brands, but I want my store to have a point of view.

Calico started as a little vintage store back in 2005. At the time, I spent hours each week scouring thrift stores for hard to find pieces. After several years of selling one-offs, I wanted to provide my customers with different sizes and more of the styles they loved. Today, Calico is a premiere fashion destination for all of the current trends and new brands – both in the boutique and online at our website shopcalico.com. However, I still keep an eye out for those classic vintage inspired pieces!
What are you buying this season? We are really loving matching sets for Spring/Summer 2015, especially in fun novelty prints! What music does your store play? We lean towards upbeat sexy pop. Some current faves include Disclosure, Iggy Azalea, and Clean Bandit. What has been really popular (or flying off the shelves) recently? Rompers are having a serious moment. Women love the ease of getting dressed in one step and a romper seems less serious than a dress. What always sells in your store regardless of season or trends? Sunglasses and statement necklaces – both can pull a look together instantly and never go out of style!
WITH PLEASURE Black is the new black. Describe your style: My style is sort of edgy and cool, but with a softer, feminine vibe to it. I love wearing say, a vintage rock tee, ripped denim, ankle boots, and a leather jacket, but I have to throw on a giant rhinestone statement necklace, just because. Who is your fashion icon? Kate Lanphear, who is Maxim’s new editor-in-chief, is pretty much perfect in every way. Top styling tip: When in doubt, add red lipstick. (Ruby Woo or Lady Danger by Mac are my go-tos.) Fashion faux pas: Unless you’ve just had a pedicure or can literally touch the ocean, there is no excuse for flip flops.
