W

elcome to the first edition of our High 5 newsletter for 2018. As we reflect on the past 6 months with pride, celebrating our achievements and our organization's positive impact on the agricultural industry, we also embark on our new financial year. May it bring you much happiness and success!

If there is one common theme running through this issue it’s the stories of men and women who are not just doing their job, but they are living their passion daily whilst constantly endeavouring to do small things right. Small decisions, small steps, small gestures. Small kindnesses. All of these small things brought together culminate in great things. Some of the main insightful features that resonate with me are: Our Internal Value campaign. The Internal Value campaign’s purpose is to create an emotive internal campaign to not only entrench the core values, which are underpinned by integrity, but also build trust between employees and management. The Awards evening was an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of colleagues for their exceptional contribution towards the prosperity of our company. When we celebrate our achievements, we encourage a company culture of high performance. The 10th World Merino Conference was a must attend for researchers, breeders and companies or institutions related to the Merino breed. The World Conference convenes every four years and this year the World Merino Conference was organised by the Uruguayan Merino Breeders Society with the support of the World Federation of Merino Breeders and held in Uruguay, Montevideo. One of the main objectives was to encourage the participation and massive networking of role players related to the breed as well as encourage the participation of students from different areas, as they will be the future Merino breeders. The 87th annual Congress of the IWTO convened in Hong Kong with 250+ wool textile industry professionals from around the world in attendance. Natural, sustainable, and biodegradable, "wool is as good as it gets," Mr Ackroyd, President of IWTO affirmed.

agricultural, entertainment and trade activities into one event with the largest showcase of over 5000 animals. Our cumulative Bloem Show sponsorship placed our BKB brand in front of over 100 000 visitors, raising the awareness of the BKB Group as a whole and entrenching our brand credibility as the Trusted Home of Agriculture. Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge (CTC) 2018, powered by Algoa FM is an event that grows in popularity each year and took place on Saturday 14 April at Hobie Beach. BKB proudly sponsored and entered 2 teams. The BKB Blitz and BKB Bullets did us proud. The Old Mutual Insure National Youth Show Championships is the highlight of Youth Shows throughout South Africa every year with more than 400 participants from all over the country taking part. The 18th National Youth Show was held towards the end of 2017 in Bathurst and was hosted by the Eastern Cape Youth Show. BKB understands the impact and importance of our youth and was honoured to once again be a key sponsor. The Championship rotates between provinces and qualified judges are selected from all over South Africa. Throughout this publication we have endeavoured to keep the stories authentic. As we assimilate these stories, we realize that they are possible because of the unique individuals in BKB that have practiced their values daily. People constantly doing small things right. Taking action in line with those values, and acting with integrity. Each of us from different backgrounds, but with common values within this organization that we call home. BKB, Our Trusted Home of Agriculture. #smallactsbigchange #integritypeople #bkbpeople #bkbourtrustedhomeofagriculture Remember, strive to be the best you can on all levels of life. Balance is the secret. Drink only fine wine, have fun, enjoy and treasure each moment. I would love to hear from you. Warmest regards,

The Bloem Show is a focal event on the agricultural calendar and has established itself as the number one choice for hosting championships by various small and large stock breeds in SA. This year Bloem Show hosted 25 Agricultural Championships, of which 7 National, 1 World Show and 17 Local and Regional Championships. Several international guests and delegates attended these outstanding events. The 10-12 day Show once again successfully combined

IWTO | WOOL ROUND TABLE 2017

PORT ELIZABETH

Annual

International Wool Textile Organisation's Round Table

COUNTERING COUNTERINTUITIVE RATINGS AND EMBRACING REGENERATION, WOOL SETS A COURSE FOR LONG-TERM CREDIBILITY AT ITS ANNUAL IWTO ROUND TABLE

W

ith the price of Merino at record highs, IWTO opened its annual Wool Round Table on 7 December in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, hub of the country’s wool and mohair industry. Wool hovers at just over 1% of the world’s total fibre production, but the wool message remains strong: throwaway culture is on its way out, and with the weight of both science and common sense around it, the wool industry is primed with the facts that support its sustainability and integrity.

SUSTAINABILITY IS THE BRIDGE, REGENERATION IS THE DESTINATION Speaker Chris Kerston of the Savory Institute agreed that modelling the LCA (life cycle assessment) does not always capture the full impact and not all systems are created equal.

Wool is regenerative: “It is really behind us, this story – because what story is there to oil? There’s no story to oil.” Chris Kerston, Savory Institute.

NONE OF THE OTHER FIBRES ARE TELLING THEIR WHOLE CRADLE TO GRAVE STORY. I SAY, WOOL IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS - IWTO PRESIDENT PETER ACKROYD

The brands in the Savory Institute’s new Land 2 Market programme are in fact moving beyond sustainability to regeneration. “Net zero is not going to save humanity,” said Mr Kerston. Brands in the L2M are looking for a “differentiated product” that shows net positive results on land. “Sustainability is the bridge, regeneration is the destination,” Mr Kerston stated.

One big reason for the low rankings is oversimplification – ratings specialists want to come up with a single score, and in so doing make subjective weightings to environmental impact assessments such as land use and eutrophication. Equally irksome is what the ratings fail to consider. Astonishingly microfibres – those invisible bits of plastic that have now entered the planet’s food chain – are not included in the data that leads to the ratings scores.

COUNTERING THE COUNTERINTUITIVE Since sustainability ratings have come into vogue in the past decade, wool has seen itself and other natural fibres ranked below synthetic fibres such as polyester, acrylic, and nylon. It’s a counterintuitive outcome that leaves many (just one example) scratching heads.

Amanda Millard (IWTO), Bonita Francis (NWGA), Lucy Leurs (BKB).

This is one of the most pressing environmental problems the planet is currently facing, and it must be considered, said LCA expert Dr Beverley Henry. “The environmental footprint score should include all significant impacts. Land use, biodiversity, microplastics – we may not have the methods, but they must be considered.”

Dr Beverley Henry of Queensland University of Technology.

Due to the high nutritional value of natural pastures in this area most farm animals and game adapt well in this unique ecosystem. The Smaldeel Fine Wool Club was founded in 1989 by like-minded enthusiastic growers of fine merino wool. Members are all registered Merino breeders and specialize in the breeding of top quality fine wools under natural conditions. They also breed Merino rams. These rams are offered to commercial merino breeders at the well-known annual Smaldeel Ram Production Sale.

Toutrekspanne neem deel in ‘n sekere gewigsklas. Soos bv. 680kg span. Kameelboom groete Johann Etzebeth

Boere Rally Wonderfontein O p Saterdag 17 Februarie was die jaarlikse 4-wiel-/ Motorfiets-dag gehou by Wondefontein, naby Belfast in Mpumalanga.

What is a QR-Code? ICT - INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Talk about easy access! QR Codes are an easy and efficient way to get information to you, quickly. These two-dimensional barcodes can be scanned by your smartphone and just like that it will link through to a webpage, or to videos, contact details, geo coordinates and more! Clever, right? QR or Quick Response Codes are fantastic because they can be encoded with way more information than a standard barcode, and there’s no more need for those chunky scanners. Just use your phone!

NEW ICT STAFF MEMBERS

T

he ICT department welcomed three new staff members in 2018.

On the 2nd of January Kudakwashe Don Junior Nyamutsambira joined us as Business Intelligence Analyst. Kuda hails from a small tourist town, Nyanga, on the Eastern side of Zimbabwe and has an older brother. He loves fishing and the Nyanga Trout Research is a favourite hang-out. In between hunting, reading fiction, mainly from the pen of Wilbur Smith, listening to rap music and clubbing he also finds time to spend with his family in Zimbabwe. In his own words: I am a food lover, but can’t cook to save my life. I am a meat lover, my favourite being lamb. I love game meat too, especially wildebeest. Favourite dish is Sadza (pap), coleslaw, chakalaka and any kind of red meat. I enjoy working out in the gym and running. I am a very fast sprinter. I dare anyone at BKB to challenge me. Favourite sport is rugby. I used to play wing back in school. I do road trips occasionally – last trip was to Oudtshoorn with the boys. I watch a lot of war and movie documentaries, especially those about snipers. Martin Calitz joined the team in March as Digital Business Analyst. A self-proclaimed exercise fanatic, this outdoor

lover loves lamb chops on the braai and in between his annual visits to his mother in Munich, he is studying for his MBA. He spent 6 months in the USA last year as part of his studies. He loves to stretch his mind by reading books on philosophy and is currently engrossed in a book about evolution. Long walks on the beach with his girlfriend is also a favourite pastime. Yusuf Ahmed joined in March as well. As Finance Intern he assists Ilana Joubert with administration with a main focus on assets and costing. Yusuf, a real people’s person, used to play soccer and is still an avid supporter, has a younger brother and loves having pizza and coke with his girlfriend Chinize, whilst listening to classical music or golden oldies. This perfect gentleman loves to take Chinize for a romantic dinner and movie. He loves learning new things and loves the analytical aspect of his job at BKB.

Some Trivia

The term Business Intelligence (BI) refers to technologies, applications and practices for the collection, integration, analysis, and presentation of business information. The purpose of Business Intelligence is to support better business decision making. Digital media is digitized content that can be transmitted over the internet or computer networks. This can include text, audio, video, and graphics. This means that news from a TV network, newspaper, magazine, etc. that is presented on a Web site or blog can fall into this category. Digital business is the creation of new business designs by blurring the digital and physical worlds. Digital business promises to usher in an unprecedented convergence of people, business, and things that disrupts existing business models.

place at the time and her “job” was to get all the necessary documents, processes and procedures in place at our sugar factory in Matsapha. Noma continued with her job and obviously involved management where needed. When an unfortunate fatal accident happened at our factory during March 2017, we realised the true value of the work she had done during the 14 months with regards to training, documentation, processes, procedures and passion for her colleagues, team and job. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS:

- Through training done early mornings and after hours with night staff, Noma communicated and demonstrated the importance of workplace safety, not just obeying rules but living and doing what is right.

N

Nomaqhawe Ndwandwe was born on the 2nd of July 1986 in Pigg’s Peak Swaziland. She matriculated at St Marks High School in Mbabane Swaziland in 2003. Her tertiary studies at the University of Swaziland included a Law Diploma followed by short courses in Occupational Health and Safety. Currently Noma is pursuing a LLB Degree. Noma started as the SHEQ manager with Atlanta Products at the Swaziland factory in February 2016. We had very limited processes and procedures in

- In the beginning it was a very big “mind shift” for most people and sometimes they would not even care to listen. Through persistence and endurance, she managed to change their beliefs and culture to start “looking out” for each other. The people eventually realised we are all one team and had to support each other in creating a safe environment. - These sessions are now very interactive and people are looking forward to them.

Create a Culture of Safety

omaqhawe Ndwandwe is our 2017 Values Awards winner in the Conserve the Environment category. BKB as an organization considers the interest of society by taking responsibility for the impact of our activities. It’s all about giving without selfish motivation and Noma did just that.

Continued and Persisted Even When Acceptance Was Not Great

- She had discussions with the staff on all levels to get their input and suggestions on how to improve operations at our factory in each working area. - Conducted regular inductions with new staff and after the December holidays with all staff to continue the focus on the importance of a safety culture.

Accident March 2017 - The professionalism and maturity she showed during this period inspired all of the team. - Noma, although very traumatised, managed to take care of all the paper work, investigations and information needed. What stood out most was the way in which she worked with the people and assisted them through the process. Big lessons Noma taught us all: - Continue to live your passion, even in the tough times and continue to do the right thing, always.

- Continued training of all safety aspects at the factory and different working stations.

- Support your colleagues, even if they do not ask and even if they do not support you.

Implemented “Toolbox” Talks on a Weekly Basis

- Importance of documentation of key activities, training and discussions in your role as manager.

- Weekly talks were implemented and documented with all the people on the factory floor to continue training, changing behaviours and created constant communication with the people. - Compounded impact of these weekly talks allowed her to complete a great deal of information during the year.

- To change a culture, start with you as the manager who lives it every day. - At work, we need to care for each other as humans, not for the position we occupy.

10 World Dohn th

Merino Confere 7 TO 15 APRIL 2018 URUGUAY

B

Pierre Vlok (BKB Bestuurder: Wol Wes) KYK WOL BY GABRIELE CAPURRO SE STOET IN URUGUAY.

obus Oberholzter, (General Manager Livestock, Auctioneering and Properties) received his second doctorate degree from the Nelson Mandela University on 23 April 2018. THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (DEVELOPMENT FINANCE) Thesis: POSSIBLE FUTURES FOR AGRICULTURAL FINANCING IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA TOWARDS 2055 The research presents four scenarios illustrating how conditions for agricultural development and agricultural financing can unfold and change towards 2055. Agriculture is presented as a complex and multidimensional sector, which continues to create negative perceptions regarding the perceived riskiness of agricultural financing. The scenarios aim to stimulate new thoughts on a broader developmental approach to agricultural financing, and to change the reluctance of the formal financial service sectors to effectively engage with previously unbanked customers. The preferred scenario, where financial inclusion is driven by multiple actors, demonstrates how a collective effort can create hope for all scales of agricultural producers.

Landbouskrywersvereniging VAN SA KOMPETISIE 2017

B

BKB Merino Riversdal, Classic Suid-Kaap VOLUME EEN | ISSUE ONE 2018

Wool for Future Markets

IWTO | 87TH ANNUAL CONGRESS 2018 | HONG KONG

THE 87TH ANNUAL CONGRESS OF THE IWTO TOOK PLACE IN HONG KONG, FROM THE 14TH TO THE 16TH OF MAY 2018 WITH 250+ WOOL TEXTILE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN ATTENDANCE.

THE FULL SOUTH AFRICAN WOOL DELEGATION.

C

ommunicating wool's sustainability emerged as one of the key themes of the event. In his closing, IWTO President Peter Ackroyd urged attendees to serve as ambassadors for wool's environmental credentials, taking the message across the board from consumers through to textile buyers. Natural, sustainable, and biodegradable, "wool is as good as it gets," Mr Ackroyd said. Stephen Wiedemann, Principal Scientist at Integrity Ag Services and Chair of the IWTO Wool Life Cycle Assessment Working Group, presented on the work being done by the industry to improve the way wool is rated by environmental agencies.

JEANETTE COOK (IWTO) AND MONICA EBERT (CORE MERINO).

WOLF AND BIRGITTE EDMAYR.

The Congress coincided with yet another rise in prices for Merino and fine Crossbred wool, with the Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) passing the 1900 c/kg mark in what was described as a “supercycle” by Chris Wilcox, Executive Director of the National Council of Wool Selling Brokers of Australia, and Chair of IWTO’s Market Intelligence Forum. The last supercycle occurred in the late 1980s. This one has now gone on for 112 weeks, taking the wool industry into new territory. While seasonal conditions in Australia and South Africa may see supply remain at current levels in the short term, “demand wins the war and the key driver of demand is consumer confidence,” said Mr Wilcox. Demand for finer wool in activewear and next-toskin continues to grow, while a low price for broader wools, relative to other fibres, should contribute to an improvement there, he reported.

ELIZABETH VAN DELDEN (WOOL ACADEMY) PARTICIPATING IN A PANEL DISCUSSION.

GEOFF KINGWILL (BKB VICE CHAIRMAN), ISAK STAATS AND MONICA EBERT.

“Past supercycles, when they have turned down, have always been due to events external to the industry. We hope to be enjoying this for the next year,” Mr Wilcox concluded. Of the delegates, 21 attended as part of the IWTO Young Professionals Programme, marking another successful year for the initiative. Next year's application period will open in early 2019 for the 88th annual Congress in Venice, Italy, 9-11 April 2019. www.iwto.org

Q What was the last book you read? A I love biographies of politicians and sport stars. I recently read the biography of AB de Villiers. Q Do you have any hobbies? (What do you do for relaxation?)

Green Living IN THE PR DEPARTMENT

A I love sport, especially rugby and cricket. Since we stayed in Lichtenburg, we had to travel long distances every week-end to support our children in their different sport events. This became my hobby. Q If you were president of our country who would you choose as your deputy? A I believe running a country is the same as coaching a sports team. For this reason, I would ask Gary Kirsten to be my deputy. He proved himself as an excellent strategist and leader when winning the cricket world cup as the coach of India, a country where he first had to understand the different cultures and subsequently managed it. Q If you could invite a celebrity for dinner who would it be? A I would love to spend some time with Mark Shuttleworth. Q How long have you worked for BKB? A I started at BKB on 31/1/2018.

Q Best advice ever given and by whom? A When I was a young graduate, a wise engineer told me that if you would like to give advice to someone, you first need to walk in that person’s shoes. It practically means that you need to spend time in that person’s world before you can understand why he/she thinks or acts in the way they do.

Your Health WEARABLE DEVICES: DO THEY REALLY MOTIVATE YOU TO EXERCISE MORE? Wearable devices have become an integral part in the lifestyle of many fitness conscious members of society. Wearable devices are available in all different shapes, colours and sizes. With the promise of tracking your steps, helping you to monitor your sleep, counting calories, getting fitter and losing weight, who wouldn’t want one of these amazing little devices around their wrists? But do they really work? What does research say?

becomes a chore, boring or monotonous, the motivation fades and they’re back to their old habits. The takeaway message here is to approach your fitness and health in a holistic way. Without changing habits, your fitness tracker isn’t likely to give you the results you’re seeking. Use your device as a tool to help you reach your weight loss and fitness goals; not as the ultimate solution.

One study, conducted at the University of WisconsinMadison, provides evidence that they are effective. During the study, half the group of post-menopausal women wore a fitness tracker, while the other half wore just a pedometer. Those wearing the tracker showed serious progress after just a month. Their activity levels increased by an hour a week and they did more vigorous exercise during this time. Lead researcher for the study, Lisa Cadmus-Bertram, explained that the wearables increased the participants’ motivation to get healthy. They could use their wearables’ website platform or smartphone app to carefully monitor their progress, input other information such as calories consumed and set short and long-term goals, all while receiving social support from their peers with whom they had connected. When buying expensive fitness trackers, one might think it’s the answer to your weight loss and fitness problems. You may be drawn in by the initial novelty of the idea and the challenge of getting 10 000 steps or burning 2 000 calories a day. But for many consumers, the minute it

“Daar is baie geleenthede regoor SuidAfrika.

Presisie Beesboerdery Dag MANIE LOUWRENS GESELS OOR HULLE NUWE HOËVELD AANGEPASTE SANTAS

KOOS LOUWRENS VERDUIDELIK DIE ROL VAN SANTA GERTRUDIS BY KRUISTELING

K
