Letter from the editor
BRAND MANAGER: PUBLIC RELATIONS & CORPORATE MARKETING BKB
I
n our holiday edition of 2018 I cannot help but notice the prevailing feeling of accomplishment, and sense of pride that collaboratively shines through on each page. Success – the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.
Throughout the edition we have endeavoured to keep the stories authentic. It’s about sharing meaningful stories. Stories that make us feel something. Stories that make us remember and stories that make us proud. A few of the main features that resonate with me are: Our BKB Top Suppliers and Retail Shops award ceremony was held on the 30th of August 2018. The award evening was an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of retail stores and suppliers for their exceptional contributions towards the growth of our company. The guest speaker, Riaad Moosa, kept us in stitches with his on-trend humour. Wolf Edmayr, CEO BKB Group, emphasised that BKB’s success story will not be possible without each team member's input and responsible actions. Wool growers at the 2018 Phillipstown Maiden Ewe Show could hear first hand where their wool was destined for and what the global markets were expecting from South African wool producers. Mr Peter Ackroyd, Chief Executive Officer of the Campaign for Wool and President of the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO), told producers that he firmly believes that merino is positioned in a wonderful place at the moment and that demand for merino as preferred natural fibre will endure. BKB and CORE Merino were an official sponsor to Team SA that tackled the gruelling M2K 2018 cycling expedition from Manali to Khardung La in the Himalayan Mountains. What a challenge! #bkbpeople #coremerino #integritypeople #bkbpeople #bkbourtrustedhomeofagriculture. The fifth annual Agri-Expo Livestock expo and the “Groot Plaasproe” festival, which were held at Sandringham outside Stellenbosch from 11 October to 13 October 2018, attracted nearly 16 000 farm and food lovers this year. The beef cattle interbreed championships were won by a Simmentaler for the first time in the five-year existence of the show. The title BKB Beef Queen was awarded to Milagro Amy 1471, owned by Andrew Masterson of the Eastern Cape. It is the second year in a row that Masterson receives top honours in the interbreed championships.
The 2018 African Brahman Congress at the Afridome in Parys sponsored by BKB, Voermol, Cape Gate, FNB and King Price showcased superb animals. This week-long Expo encompassed a variety of activities in order to give breeders the opportunity to interact with each other, showcase their cattle and to exchange ideas. Nampo Cape was a huge success! This trade show allows producers to connect with others involved in the agriculture sector. Innovative machinery, products and services were on display. The awareness of the BKB Group was significantly raised and our brand credibility entrenched as the Trusted Home of Agriculture. The annual Swartland Show in Moorreesburg was an educating and fun-filled event for the whole family. Livestock championships were hosted, including horses, sheep and cattle as well as numerous horse drawn carriage parades. BKB’s involvement as sponsor of the show was invaluable and this platform created the opportunity to give back to a region that supports us tremendously in our Wool, Livestock & Auctioneering and Grain divisions. The “Old Mutual Insure” 19th National Youth Show was held for the very first time in the Southern Cape with more than 400 contestants from all 9 provinces. BKB understands the impact and importance of our youth and was honoured to be a key sponsor. BKB is proud of its longstanding relationship with the Agriculture Writers Association of South Africa. Our involvement as a sponsor of the Agricultural photo and photographer of the year competition spans over 35 years. This longstanding relationship underlines the vital importance that we attach to the image of Agriculture. Have a look at the winning photos on page 37. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your families joy, warm memories and peace. A very happy new year, filled with success and good health. Remember strive to be the best you can on all levels of life. Balance is the secret. Drink only fine wine, have fun, enjoy and treasure each moment. I would love to hear from you. Warmest regards,

IWTO Voorsitter praat op Phillipstown se Jongooiskou
PETER ACKROYD, PRESIDENT VAN DIE INTERNASIONALE WOLTEKSTIELORGANISASIE (IWTO).

weggeloop. Kraankuil was tweede en Phillipstown derde. Vyf klubs het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem. Mnre.
Dié jongooiskou is enig in sy soort in Suid-Afrika. Volgens Mnr.

CONGRATS TO ANDREW, ESPECIALLY FOR WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIPS TWO YEARS IN A ROW!
T
he fifth annual Agri-Expo Livestock expo and the Groot Plaasproe festival, which were held at Sandringham outside Stellenbosch from 11 October to 13 October 2018, attracted nearly 16 000 farm and food lovers this year. Visitors could explore more than 150 exhibitions, meet 300 farm animals and watch top animals of various breeds compete with about 20 breeders’ associations involved.
According to Johan Ehlers, chief executive officer of Agri-Expo, they are pleasantly surprised by the growth in visitor numbers and the positive feedback from the industry as well as the public. “The value of Livestock and the Groot Plaasproe lies in the fact that over the last five years it has grown into one of the few opportunities where the public can experience the total value chain of a variety of agricultural industries in an accessible manner,” said Ehlers. “This year’s attendance underlines our success to bring the farmer and the public closer together by offering 20-events-in-one just 30 km outside the city during which visitors can experience farm life firsthand.” 20TH NATIONAL HOLSTEIN CHAMPIONSHIPS A highlight at this year’s show was the 20th National Championships of the SA Holstein Breeders’ Society, hosted only for the third time in the Western Cape in the 106 years of the society’s existence. Breeders from various provinces convened for the show, which
included a special function where recognition was given to legends in the industry. CS Puttergill & Son’s Holstein cow, Damion Iona 12077 was named the national champion. Hannes Pretorius, newly elected president of SA Holstein, described the show as one of the best ever. “We appreciate the professional standard with which Agri-Expo plans and executes the Livestock expo, as well as the contribution they make to agriculture as a whole,” says Pretorius. JERSEY CROWNED FNB DAIRY QUEEN Livestock is especially sought after for its dairy interbreed show, supported by the three largest dairy breeding societies, the Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey breeders’ societies. A highlight of this year’s dairy show, the largest in South Africa, was the participation of international judge Brian Carscadden from Canada, made possible by Semex South Africa and Holstein Canada. Tierwil Dimension’s Abbigail 13010, owned by Rikus van Wyk of Tierwil Jerseys outside Porterville, was crowned the 2018 FNB Dairy Queen, the highest honour awarded to a dairy breeder. According to Van Wyk, it was an “incredible privilege” to be part of Agri-Expo Livestock 2018. He described the facilities and organisation as “of international quality, with an exceptional atmosphere.”
Masterson describes Livestock as the “best marketing opportunity for the industry” with “first-class facilities and a “sky high standard where you can measure yourself against the best.” Masterson says the large number of visitors does not only provide excellent product exposure, but “also brings ordinary people into contact with our animals so that they can experience firsthand how well the animals are treated.” Basie Erasmus of Joyce’s Angus Stud won the second annual Landbouweekblad Groom’s Challenge. Other highlights included the biggest schools’ programme at an agricultural show with about 3 000 learners, the SA Sheepdog Auction where a working dog was sold for R30 000, the Western Cape Boerboel Show, the Cape Rabbit Club Spring Championship Show as well as International Pinotage Day tastings. The title BKB Beef Queen was awarded to Milagro Amy 1471, owned by Andrew Masterson of the Eastern Cape. Nelson Mandela Day FINANCE
T
67 Minutes of Hope
he Finance and Creditors Department successfully planned and executed our Nelson Mandela Day Initiative during the period of July-August 2018. The aim of this initiative was fuelled from our desire to contribute to the relief of poverty and negativity within our city. Our choice of charity recipient was Save-a-Pet, situated in Greenbushes. They are a nonprofit organisation that cares for unwanted and abused dogs and cats.
WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD AND MAKE IT A BETTER PLACE. IT IS IN YOUR HANDS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. - NELSON MANDELA
The outreach project was funded by means of a raffle and sponsors from two of our local suppliers. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people and institutions for their contributions: 1. Raffle contributors: Monetary contributions 2. Ever-Grow - Jean Blume: Dog and Cat food donations 3. Dinachem: Cleaning materials The proceeds from the raffle were used to purchase and donate dog food, cat food, cleaning materials and a cash donation. Three lucky winners won the following prizes: 1st prize: Gas Heater 2nd prize: Luxury hamper and a hot water bottle 3 rd prize: Winter throw, coffee mug and sweet treats.
STAFF FROM THE FINANCE AND CREDITORS DEPARTMENTS PREPARING FOR THE TRIP TO SAVE-A-PET.
On the 4th of August 2018 we were privileged enough to hand deliver our donations and engage with the animals at Save-a-Pet. What a humbling and enriching experience! It was, however, the adoption of a new dog, Reno, that was the highlight of the day. Carolina Stoltz and her family welcomed the furry baby into their home and added that special touch to a day that was already close to perfect. Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” May this noble gesture be the first of many more to follow. Christien Terblanche | Department Head: Finance

FRUITS DU SUD

Riaan Nel, verkrygingsbestuurder, ’n enorme rol. Landbouweekblad www.fruitsdusud.com

Wool Pellets used as Fertilizer I
n gardening, your primary role is nourisher. You analyze and plan for any potential threats that may inhibit the growth in your garden. You consider carefully your climate zone, the locations of planting, the relationship of plants in your bed, and how best to provide the premium environment for growth. Plants need soil nutrition, water, and aeration to grow. There is a way to improve your soil structure and provide the nutrients, adequate water, and porosity - wool pellets. What are wool pellets and how can you use them as a growing medium? WHAT ARE WOOL PELLETS? Wool Pellets are made from 100% raw wool. Wool is sheared from sheep each spring. The main fleece of the wool is sold to make clothes, but the belly wool and the "tags" (wool from around the back end of the sheep) are used to make pellets. The wool is compressed and formed into pellets. 1. WOOL PELLETS HOLD WATER Wool Pellets are able to hold 20x their weight in water. When added to gardens or potting soil, they help to reduce watering frequency up to 25%. By holding water, they also wick away extra water, protecting your plants from over watering.
2. WOOL PELLETS PROVIDE AERATION AND POROSITY As wool soaks in water, it puffs up and expands helping to increase porosity (oxygen) in the soil. This gives space for roots to spread out and grow becoming deeper and stronger, reducing the need for additives like Perlite.
4. WOOL PELLETS ARE ALL-NATURAL, ORGANIC, SUSTAINABLE, & RENEWABLE Wool Pellets are all-natural, organic, and chemical free. This environmentally friendly tool is a safe and fully renewable way for you to provide the nutrients your plants need, while keeping them free from chemicals harmful to you and your pets.
Have you had some of your favourite blooms die while on vacation? Using Wool Pellets in flower pots and houseplant containers eliminates packed down soil while allowing excellent aeration, reducing watering frequency and allowing optimal root spread.
Because it is the natural blend of nutrients that breaks down slowly, wool pellets will not burn your plants and lawn like other fertilizers can.
3. WOOL PELLETS ARE A SLOW RELEASE FERTILIZER Wool Pellets are naturally high in Nitrogen and take 6 months to break down fully. This makes wool pellets the perfect slow release, all natural fertilizer to help your plants grow all year long. • Wool Pellets have a fertilizer value of 9-1-2 NPK, • plus they have calcium, magnesium, iron, sulfur, • and other micro nutrients in just the right amounts. The nutrition in wool helps grow, strong, healthy, beautiful plants that need no other fertilizer. Talk about cost savings!
You won’t need to introduce man-made components to aerate, hold water, keep away pests, or provide nutrients to your plants. Wool Pellets make gardening worry free from seed to harvest. 5. WOOL PELLETS REPELS SLUGS AND SNAILS Wool Pellets, by nature, are a repellent to slugs, snails, and weeds. When placed around the base of plants and mixed into the soil. When viewed under a microscope, the wool fibres are barbed (think itchy wool sweater). This is the component that will keep those soft bellied pest away from your plants. No bug wants to climb through a barbed land field to munch on your plants. In problem areas we recommend placing wool pellets in a 6 inch circumference around your plants. Brahma AFRICAN BRAHMAN CONGRESS 2018
T
Celebration
he Afridome Showgrounds in Parys were turned into Brahman country at the end of August this year. There were beautiful Brahman cattle everywhere you looked and farming with these cattle was what every conversation was about during the 2018 African Brahman Congress.
Show class judging shared the congress programme with technical presentations by several experts. The excitement of celebrating the excellent cattle alternated with knowledge share aimed at improvement. For Sietze Smit, breed director of the Brahman Cattle Breeders’ Society of South Africa, the highlight of the congress was the significant attendance from our neighbouring countries. “We had delegates from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana. Although this was not a massive number of delegates, their involvement was significant and the interaction was priceless. Many of these visitors were also buyers at the Brahman National Auction that concluded the congress.” The congress was attended by approximately 250 delegates daily and more than 300 people attended the auction. Smit says that it was refreshing to interlude the show judging with technical presentations.”These presentations were very well attended and gave breeders the opportunity to better themselves with knowledge.” The Brahman Breeders’ Society of South Africa holds its national championships every four years, and this year it formed part of the African Brahman Congress. More than 400 halter-trained animals and 135 nonhalter-trained animals were judged during the various show classes.

The African Brahman Congress concluded with the National Brahman Auction on 1 September 2018. Although some lots went unsold, excellent prices and averages were achieved. The percentage of lots sold was 82%. The average price for bulls was R82 500 with the highest being R200 000, as mentioned above. The average price on cows was R40 000 and on heifers R37 000. Visit BKB Wool Store
embers of Exporters Eastern Cape were treated to a rare glimpse into the mechanics of global wool trade when they attended an Exporters EC Site Tour of BKB’s head office in North End, Port Elizabeth, on Thursday, 25 October. BKB, a proud member of Exporters EC, is regarded as a leading player in the South African agricultural sector, with a focus on Wool and Mohair Brokerage Services as well as Livestock, Auctioneering and Sales. While it takes a full year to grow enough wool on 40 sheep to make up just one bale, the BKB head office in North End is far removed from the slow-pace of a sheep’s country life; as the multi-story warehouse is a hive of activity on all levels. Hosting the Exporters EC members during a site tour of the massive BKB warehouse was BKB Logistics Manager Rabe Nortje. With 34 auctions held per year by BKB and ramping up towards the busiest time of the year in December, the wool industry was currently doing well, according to Nortje. “There is a good balance of supply and demand, with no stockpiles worldwide. Wool and mohair are currently trading at good levels. A major market for our wool is China,” said Nortje. BKB handles a big portion of the wool clip in South Africa: this averages 30 000 000 kg’s of wool per season, amounting to 200 000 bales, which are sold and shipped
to markets across the world. “Around 1 700 containers leave our premises per year. 90 bales of wool fit into a 20-foot container, while 180 bales of wool fit into a 40-foot container. The wool is first compressed by our high-density presses to fit into the containers,” said Nortje.
The Site Tour included BKB’s quality testing facility, of which work is outsourced to the Wool Testing Bureau (SA). Exporters EC members also viewed the sorting facilities of BKB, offered as an additional service to producers. Motor Industry Customs Brokers (MICB)’s Allan Corbett said the tour made him realise that BKB’s head office was much bigger than what he originally thought. “Seeing the process from receipt to the wool being dispatched for shipping was very interesting,” said Corbett. A typical week at BKB Wool & Mohair involves auctions on Wednesdays, where-after shipping instructions are received from the buyers. World Net Logistics’ Teresa van Vuuren, who also attended the tour, said it was fascinating to see how the different departments processed the wool before shipping takes place. Exporters EC Committee Member Jane Stevenson thanked BKB for opening their warehouse doors to the members.

Charity Soccer Day B
KB Supported the Charity Soccer Day, organised by BLC Attorneys, in aid of Missionvale Primary School. The event was a great success and BKB sponsored a team entry to the tournament held on Saturday 10 November 2018. The tournament was made up of four matches after which some teams entered the knock-off stages to play a further three matches.
more importantly, they holistically embraced the short-lived title of “soccer player”. BKB played their first four matches and made it to the first round of knock-outs. Thereafter our dream of being the victors was rudely obliterated.
The BKB team played exceptionally well,

Landbou: Lelike Eentjie Tot Swaan
'n Goeie voorbeeld is genetika.

NASIONALE JEUGSKOUKAMPIOENSKAP - GEORGE
Old Mutual Insure"
Nasionale Jeugskoukampioenskap
2018 GEORGE | 30 SEPT - 3 OKT
D
Daar is oudergewoonte in 15 kategorieë meegeding: vleisbeeste, melkbeeste, wolskape, vleisskape, vleisbokke, sybokke, melkbokke, wedvlugduiwe, sierduiwe, varke, kulinêre kuns, suiwelbereiding, konyne, pluimvee en perde.

Conquer Himalayas ON TANDEM, AGAINST ALL ODDS
BKB
and CORE Merino were an official sponsor to Team SA that tackled the gruelling M2K 2018 cycling expedition from Manali to Khardung La. What a challenge! #bkbpeople #coremerino Not only was it a triumphant African first when media personality Liezel van der Westhuizen successfully piloted blind fellow cyclist Cindy Jacobs on a tandem bicycle over the famous Himalayas from Mandali to Khardung La in India last month but the pair also had to battle the elements of wind, rain, sleet and sub-zero temperatures whilst being severely challenged by every imaginable technical problem.
refractive error services and prescription spectacles to people without access to affordable vision care. “Cycling this distance on some of the highest roads in the world, is a daunting challenge, especially because the roads are non-existent at some places, and you have to be physically and mentally prepared to complete it,”said van der Westhuizen. What further sets the event aside, is the fact that it allows for participation of visually impaired and other physically challenged athletes.
They covered the mean distance of 550km in 10 days at altitudes of up to 18 330 feet.
Some of the technical problems the women had to endure included Liezel’s ‘camelback’ (water backpack she carries for nutrition) breaking, her left-hand cycling glove being blown away and everything getting wet – all on day one.
Liezel describes it as that ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event that cyclists around the world dream of. The expedition starts at Manali, which is known as the door to the heaven of the Himalayas! It makes you cross five passes with a maximum altitude of 5602 metres reached at Khardung La.
On the second day Cindy contracted a bad eye infection, followed by the tandem’s left crank breaking on day 3 which meant they had to walk a far distance before they had access to technical assistance. A crank from a spare bicycle that was fitted to their tandem came off every time they hit a bump in the road!
Both being extremely passionate about philanthropy, the two had decided to use the event to raise funds for two medical charities namely Operation Smile South Africa and OneSight. Beste van die Beste

Veeboere word Aangewys
D
Hy is beide as borg en beoordelaar by die kompetisie betrokke.

Groete,
Dr Michael Bradfield Convener: Aldam Stockman’s School
Behind the Scenes OF A RECENT PHOTOSHOOT IN THE WOOL STORE
Marike Brits, AgriOrbit

Be part of our BKB Instagram following by adding the hashtag #bkbpeople to your BKB related Instagram posts. How Instagram Hashtags Work: Every Instagram post you create can be accompanied by a short message or caption and a few hashtags. The hashtags help organise and categorise photos and video content, which aids the process of content discovery and optimisation. For example, you might post a picture of a BKB group of people, and then use the hashtag #bkbpeople when it’s uploaded to Instagram. By using this hashtag, the image is catalogued so other Instagram users who are interested in or are following BKB can find it.
