Thank you for celebrating with us at our Scholarship Ceremony. At the Dominican Day Parade Scholarship Award Reception 25 Scholarship recipients hailed from both private and public universities, from as far as California to as close as New Jersey, and New York. It was an honor to acknowledge their success and encourage their future achievements.

Christopher Platt is The New York Public Library’s Chief Branch Library Officer, overseeing the programs and services offered at all of the system’s 88 neighborhood branches, as well as the central customer experience, adult education, and youth education departments.

Angela Fernandez, Esq., is the Executive Director and supervising attorney of Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights. She was the Chair of the Board from March 2015 to March 2017.

Keynote Speaker • Leonel Elias Carrasco Abinader, MD Dr. Carrasco Abinader a young high achiever in the filed of medicine. Proud to be a Dominican. He graduated from INTEC – Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo. Upon arriving in the USA in 2010 and establishing himself in Florida he began as a research coordinator and quality improvement specialist and moved onto being a medical observer in Youngstown, OH. He specializes in Internal Medicine. His first interview for his medical residency was at Harlem Hospital Center. Presently he is ending a sub-medical specialty in Pulmonary Medicine at Harlem Hospital Center In Julio 2017, he will begin a second sub-specialty in Critical Care Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center.

Gale A. Brewer is the 27th Borough President of Manhattan, with a role in deciding land-use and zoning issues in the borough, appointment of members to the 12 community boards, and the ability to introduce legislation in the City Council.

DOMINICAN DAY PARADE AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS AND ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD LEADERSHIP

25 scholarships awarded to outstanding students of Dominican descent and Maria M. Khury inducted as Chair of the Board of Directors NEW YORK, NY, April 5, 2017 – The Dominican Day Parade, Inc. a nonprofit organization that promotes the culture and folklore of the Dominican Republic, today celebrated the power of education by awarding scholarships totaling $25,000 to deserving students of Dominican descent. The 2nd Annual Dominican Day Parade Award Reception was celebrated at The New York Public Library. The scholarship program was created to assist students of Dominican ancestry nationwide in obtaining a college degree. Scholarships were granted on a competitive basis to undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited higher education institution in the U.S. Scholarship recipients each received $1,000. They hailed from both private and public universities, from as far as California to as close as New Jersey and New York. “We’re proud to honor their success and encourage their future achievements,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Ramona Hernandez, Ph.D. “This scholarship program represents the firm mission of the Dominican Day Parade Board to underscore our focus on educational achievement, leadership development, and to promote Dominican values through what is now one of the main staples of our organization,” said former Chair of the Board of Directors Angela Fernandez, Esq. The ceremony also included the induction of Maria M. Khury as the new Chair of the Board of Directors. Ms. Khury, a committed community activist, served for the last two years as the Parade's Development Chair overseeing the Parade's fundraising initiatives. Ms. Khury is an entrepreneur in the fields of business consulting, travel, and insurance. She is also a registered M/WBE (Minority Women Business Enterprise). She has received numerous awards for her business success and community engagement. Ms. Khury was elected in accordance with the organization’s by-laws that limit each board chair to a two-year term. "I am honored to have been elected as Chair and look forward to continuing to work hand in hand with the board to fulfill our mission of Dominican pride in New York and across the globe," said Maria Khury. "My heartfelt congratulations to my partners on the Board of Directors. Our sincerest gratitude to Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Dr. Leonel Elias Carrasco Abinader, and Christopher Platt of the NYPL for participating in our program. Mostly, we celebrate and are overjoyed with our 25 Awardees. Much is expected of you. DOMINICAN DAY PARADE ENTREGA BECAS Y ANUNCIA EL NUEVO LIDERAZGO DE LA JUNTA 25 becas otorgadas a estudiantes destacados de ascendencia dominicana y María M.Khury es elegida Presidenta del Consejo The Dominican Day Parade, Inc. una organización sin fines de lucro que promueve la cultura y el folclore de la República Dominicana, celebró hoy el poder de la educación otorgando $ 25,000 a estudiantes merecedores de ascendencia dominicana. La 2 ª Recepción Anual del Desfile del Día Dominicano se celebró en la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York. El programa de becas fue creado para ayudar a los estudiantes de ascendencia dominicana a nivel nacional a obtener un título universitario. Las becas se otorgan en forma competitiva a estudiantes universitarios de pregrado matriculados en un recinto de educación superior acreditado en los Estados Unidos. Los ganadores de becas, quienes recibieron el monto $ 1.000 cada uno, provienen de universidades tanto privadas como públicas y de lugares tan lejanos como California y tan cercanos como Nueva Jersey y Nueva York. "Estamos orgullosos de honrar su éxito y alentar sus logros futuros", dijo la Dra. Ramona Hernández, Directora del Comité de Becas. "Este programa de becas representa la firme misión de la Junta de Directores del Desfile Dominicano de subrayar nuestro enfoque en apoyar el logro educativo, desarrollar nuevos liderazgos y promover los valores dominicanos a través de este programa, el cual adelanta uno de los principales objetivos básicos de nuestra organización", dijo Angela Fernández, Esq. Ex Presidente de la Junta. La ceremonia también incluyó la toma de posesión de María M. Khury como Presidente de la Junta Directiva. La Sra. Khury, una destacada activista comunitaria, fungió durante los últimos dos años como Directora del Comité de Recaudación de Fondos del Desfile. La Sra.
