That Dinner in the Sky is really coming to Bangkok Test your fear of heights by strapping yourself into one of 22 seats at a dining table elevated 50 meters above The Emporium. This sky-high dining experience will see your hour-long, four-course meal served up by cooks from the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, who’ll offer two dining sessions per evening—”Sunset” at 6pm and “City Lights” at 7:30pm— priced from B4,990-5,390 per person. Running from Dec 20 until the end of February. www.dinnerinthesky.co.th That John Legend is heading our way The American soul singer/songwriter behind hits like “All Of Me” and “You & I (Nobody In The World)” will visit Bangkok sometime in March, 2018. Though the actual date and venue were not known before going to print, we’ve been told tickets will go on sale from the beginning of Dec starting at B2,800, via Thaiticketmajor.com. That Bangkok’s set to host “the world’s first gay sports day” On Dec 23, Bangkok’s gay community is taking over National Stadium for a sports day and pride parade. Bangkok Gay Festival 2017 is organized by Bangkokgay, who are claiming the event as “the world’s first gay sports day” to take place in a real stadium. The day’s highlights include a parade of muay Thai fighters led by Parinya “Nong Toom” Charoenphol, the first ever transgender muay Thai fighter, and a full roster of sporting contests. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketbox, starting from B500 with profits going to a foundation that treats people with AIDS. For more information, call 089-149-3175. That Boyy’s new store looks like something out of ‘70s Milan The power couple behind Bangkok’s globe-conquering bag brand now have a new flagship store and cafe in Gaysorn Village, and it’s sure to churn up your envy. The boutique’s classiness appears effortless, the result of clean lines and a modern aesthetic. A door transports you from the showroom into Boyy and Son Cafe, where mid-century pastels meet with smooth terrazzo. That a new farm-to-table dining experience is making waves At Haoma (www.haoma.dk), Indian chefs Deepanker Khosla (formerly of Charcoal) and Tarun Bhatia (winner of San Pellegrino’s Young Chef 2016 in Southeast Asia) have created a restaurant with a truly remarkable kitchen garden. On-site in Asoke, they grow 37 different edible greens, all of which go into veg-driven dishes like Stick to the Roots, which evokes a vegetable patch with delicate beetroot puree “roots,” 90-day black garlic “dirt” and heirloom carrots.

upfront HOT OR NOT
Hot: Ari now
Not: Ari then
If you flip to page 18, you’ll see a story about Ari and all the ways it’s hot right now. To be fair, we (and everyone else) have been saying that for a long time. But back when we started this job, “hot” meant a 20-minute walk from the BTS to Pla Dib, followed by a 30-minute wait for a table, followed by fusion sushi and the growing realization that things are kinda better over on Thonglor. Not any more.
INTERVIEW
Hot: Cleanliness
Not: Wires
For years, we blamed the wires. It was the wires that ruined Sukhumvit. It was the wires that stopped us being like Seoul. It was the wires that kept us in the third-world doldrums of the international subconscious. But now the wires are gone. And Sukhumvit still looks like a dump. And we still can’t embrace bike sharing or bringing our own bags to the grocery store or democracy.
Hot: Food trucks
Not: Heat
2014 called. It wants its Hot-Nots back. Don’t worry, you haven’t jumped into some kind of Bangkok dining trend time machine. Food trucks are well and truly back with us. Pizza Massilia, the banyan-tree shaded Italian pie-flipper extraordinaire, and Nitro Labs, a tuk tuk that serves coffee, are making bourgeois street-side dining cool again. Which will be great when the cool breeze finally decides to show up.
Hot: Italian diners
Not: Rustic industrial
There’s more than a whiff of Milan’s Bar Luce—created by Prada in league with director Wes Anderson—about Gaysorn Village’s new Boyy Cafe, which is exactly what we had to say about La Dotta pasta bar on Thonglor. But who cares when finally Bangkok restaurant designers have something to play with other than Edison bulbs and dangling ferns? We knew this day would come eventually.
THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

Since its Oct 16 explosion across social media platforms, #MeToo has given a voice and support to victims of sexual harassment and assault. In Bangkok, the call-andresponse has been subdued, but local social media activists are making headway through their own movements. Thaiconsent is a platform that promotes healthy sexual relationships and education about consent. We spoke to its founder, Wipaphan “Nana” Wongsawang, 24, on her inspirations, mission and plans for the future. How did Thaiconsent begin? After I helped a friend who had been sexually assaulted to navigate the legal process, I began to encounter others with similar stories. My friends and I found we knew between 7-10 people who were the victims of acquaintance rape. We were also affected by the documentary Hunting Ground, screened by the Documentary Club. The term “rape culture” existed in Thai society but sex without bodily harm or screams for help but which left emotional and psychological pain was not yet understood. I wanted to disseminate the idea of “consent.” What were you hoping to achieve with the page? To encourage Thais to distinguish between “consensual sex” and “unwanted sex.” I also wanted to show couples a win-win situation where one’s partner feels empowered to say yes or no to sex, and boundaries are respected. Thai society needs to share knowledge and experience of sex in a way that is understanding and respectful. Where do you find inspiration? I pick stories to illustrate from those our readers share. I also let others
illustrate. The important thing is for illustrators to empathize with the stories or the storytellers, which sometimes means conveying a positive attitude. For example, if we’re careless in depicting a person in trouble, there’s a risk that the picture condemns the person as someone who cannot love themselves again. I need to prevent this negative attitude. How well has your work and its message been received? When it launched in 2015, Thaiconsent wasn’t well-received. Only in 2017, when I went back to do an edit of some unpublished content, did Thaiconsent become popular. At first, I received some negative feedback since the purpose of the page wasn’t yet clear. When I posted “One Night Stand,” the question arose as to whether or not I was trying to “romanticize” sex. When I started to post different stories, people came to understand that we have all different types of sexual experiences. How can Thai society combat rape culture? People should understand that there’s a range of sexual assaults, from physical to verbal to non-verbal. There’s often a lack of sympa-
thy, for example, in situations where the victims didn’t scream for help. People should also learn how to move forward. People who didn’t understand consent before must change their conception of sex to be more progressive. I don’t think penalties make potential victims safer. Society should look at the whole system, education and culture. The media should provide a real model for relationships, rather than dreamy representations. Do you think sex education goes far enough in school? No, not at all. Although our teachers are quite progressive, the conservative approach to education is a problem. It’s time to talk about sex and relationships, not just birth control. Do you have a favorite illustration? I like my intern’s work ,“Kham Uan Yang Diao” (Obesity). It’s about a person who ends a relationship because of their body shape— they lose confidence being naked with their partner. Mongkul Srithaviviroj, my intern, depicted that person in the story as Venus. His work shows an appreciation for physical pleasure. Pansita Ritthikarn www.fb.com/thaiconsent

This, coupled with the car’s aerodynamic front bumper, stylish rear spoiler, sport suspension and precision braking, make the new MINI John Cooper Works a performance beast perfect for enthusiasts who need style and extreme driving capabilities. The vehicle is an update of the classic John Cooper Works, the 1956 brain-child of car designer Alec Issigonis and racer and car maker John Cooper. Under assignment from the British Motor Corporation, the duo collaborated in the creation of a four-seat compact car that revolutionized early-'60s motoring. The status of the high-performance John Cooper Works was then sealed by race-car driver Roy Salvadori, who conquered the Aston Martin DB4 on his way to four championship victories at the Monte Carlo Rally.

Super Suite The Nai Harn Resort (www.thenaiharn.com) adds 16 new ocean view suites to its ultra-luxe grounds. Situated on a quiet stretch of beach, each suite (from B13,292/ night) comes with a private terrace and outdoor lounge overlooking the idyllic Andaman Sea. Indoors, the room is kitted out with king-sized beds, flat-screen TVs and huge, standalone bathtubs—ideal for holing up and escaping the outside world. Champagne can even be ordered at the touch of a button to make those sunsets extra special. If you can bear to leave the suite, head up to Hansha, the hotel’s recently opened rooftop sushi bar, for fresh sashimi and panoramic views.

Pop Art Remember waking up at daybreak to catch the latest antics of every child’s favorite cat-robot, Doraemon? Well, our hero is back, or should we say, coming soon. It’s a century (ish) to Sep 3, 2112, Doraemon’s birth date, and to celebrate Fujiko Fujio (the cartoon’s creator) has invited 28 artists to collaborate in a Doraemon-inspired exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo. Brace yourselves: some of the interpretations, like the sexualized version of the little girl Shizuka, have outgrown the family-friendly filter of your childhood. The exhibition is open daily from 10am to 8pm (5pm on Tuesdays) and runs until Jan 8, 2018. Tickets are B525/person at thedoraemontentokyo2017. jp or at the museum itself. Fly with NokScoot for around B16,734 per round-trip.
CHIANG MAI
FESTIVE AFTERNOON TEA AT THE OKURA PRESTIGE BANGKOK 1 - 31 December 2017
Brew Break Coffee geeks: add this stop to your circuit of Chiang Mai, the hometown of Thailand’s coffee scene. 186 Cafe & Bar (www.fb.com/OneEightysix.Cafe.and.Bar) is worth the 15-minute ride north of the city. The red brick and naked cement of the shop combine for a modest industrial style which gives away nothing of the coffee prowess within. You’ll find the telltale coffee accoutrements here, from Aeropress to siphon, but that doesn’t mean the espresso-standards of mocha (B65) and cappuccino (B55) aren’t worth your time. The creme brulee (B85) comes in sharing-size and the strawberry mousse (B85) has a decadent quantity of dark and white chocolate. Sip your drink while taking in the sabai-sabai atmosphere and abundant light from the big glass windows.
Throughout December, celebrate the season of joy and meet friends for our special Festive Afternoon Tea. Sets include delicate Christmas pastries, savouries and sandwiches, all enjoyed with mulled wine or eggnog and Mariage Frères Noël tea. Available daily from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Priced from Baht 1,190 inclusive of coffee or tea for 2 persons For more information and reservations, please contact 02 687 9000 or email upandabove@okurabangkok.com Prices are subject to 10% service charge and 7% government tax.
SINGAPORE
Sleep Tight There’s nothing quite like your own bed. The next best thing, though, might be Singapore Airline’s (www.singaporeair.com) new first class suites. The carrier has refurbished its luxury offering, reducing the 12 old suites to six new ones, effectively doubling your personal room. Each suite has a bed (a real bed, not a manipulated chair), a leather armchair, a 32-inch HD screen and Bose noise-canceling headphones. Change has also come to Business class, where the seats are wider and more space-agey. Economy seats have been, uh, reupholstered. Admittedly, those seats weren’t bad to begin with. Fly the new first class from Dec 18 between Singapore and Sydney. The cost of a good night’s sleep? Approximately B407,142/round trip.

Love Signs Designer Pim Sukhahuta created the Sretsis Spring/Summer 2018 collection while planning her wedding, which might explain the line’s inherent romanticism. The Americana beachwear collection, called “Language of Flowers,” channels sweet innocence with floral prints and honey bee motifs. Our favorite look from this season goes to the set of silk-chiffon dresses with hand-drawn floral patterns (around B20,000); the blue, flower-print faux-leather jacket (B18,500) is also a spring wardrobe essential. 2/F, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5874. Pure Bling With gifting season right around the corner, look no further than the St. Louis crystal glassware collection for the perfect present. Now owned by Hermes, the 16th century glassmaker marks the 90th anniversary of its Tommy collection with a new line of candelabras, vases, lamps and more. Departing from glitz and gold, the collection lets the dazzling beauty of the crystal shine, while star-shaped bases, bead-cut hurricanes and diamond cuts show off exquisite craftsmanship. Vases start from B80,000, while a lamp will set you back B60,000. 3/F, Siam Paragon, Rama 1 Rd., 02-129-4577. Open daily 10am-7pm. BTS Siam.

Chiang Dao, Chiang Mai
Get out of Bangkok Three amazing Thai destinations to lead the good life.
Railay Beach, Krabi
Kallerna
Chiang Dao, Chiang Mai
Although it’s a step in the right direction, downing a couple chicken salads and Instagramming your meal prep every Sunday isn’t exactly what we would call a balanced lifestyle. Bangkok’s blaring traffic whistles, whizzing motorcycles and crowded streets take a toll on your body that a healthy diet doesn’t necessarily fix. The odd escape from metropolis madness is a must, but that doesn’t mean drowning yourself in Leo and bar snacks while on an island retreat. Instead, get some fresh air in your lungs and see the best natural wonders Thailand has to offer at any one of these amazing, activity-focused destinations.
Hiking up Doi Chiang Dao Doi Chiang Dao is arguably Thailand’s most spectacular summit. The 2,175-meter mountain is impossible to miss on the road to Chiang Mai and has become the go-to place for Thailand hikers keen to get their nature fix and collect some Instagram ammunition once they reach the top. It’s not the highest mountain in the country, but thanks to its lush greenery, eye-opening views and range of nearby attractions, Doi Chiang Dao is definitely our choice for the best hiking spot in the North. There’s a decent selection of stores and coffee shops at the mountain’s base if you need to fuel up pre-journey (highly recommended since there are no tourist facilities once you get started). Also, do spend some time exploring the trademark Chiang Dao caves near the base of the mountain. You can search the passages on your own (B40), but will need a guided lantern tour (from B200) if you want to examine the relics deeper inside. Where to stay: Hotels in Chiang Mai (from B400/night) Get to Doi Chiang: Bus (B40), air-con minivan (B150) or private van (B400/day) Extras: Chiang Dao National Park Pass is required (B200)
Rock Climbing in Krabi Krabi’s plethora of beautiful limestone karsts make it Thailand’s most popular destination for both foreign and local rock climbing (and cliff jumping) enthusiasts.
Unlike hiking, rock climbing leans towards the “extreme” side of things and that means you need to be in at least moderate physical condition to give this a shot. Your actual experience with the sport matters less, as the area is home to a host of internationally certified training centers with beginner classes (from B1,000) and day trips to some of the region’s most popular rock climbing spots (B1,000-3,000). You don’t have to leave the mainland to give this a try, either. Krabi’s Railay Beach has been one of the world’s top rock-climbing destinations for decades thanks to its craggy limestone cliffs boasting more than 600 challenging climbing routes. Other popular climbing spots include the cliffs on Phranang Beach and those bordering Ton Sai Bay. Where to stay: Railay, Ao Nang or Krabi town (from B600/night) Get to the cliffs: Most tour companies offer complimentary pick-up on request. Local transportation runs B50-150 depending on destination
Cycling in Kanchanaburi T h e va s t ro c ky a re a s o f Ce n t ra l T h a i l a n d ’s Kanchanaburi province make it one of the country’s premier destinations for cycling tours. If you’ve ever wanted to dirty up that fancy mountain bike, this is your spot. There are countless developed bike paths with varying degrees of length and elevation to suit your level of experience and physical conditioning. If you’re particularly savvy and adventurous you can cycle your way around Kanchanaburi without a guided tour, but it will take a bit of work to find must-see spots like Kao Poon cave, Death Railway Museum, picturesque Erawan waterfall and the bridge over the River Kwai. For cycling newbies, we recommend trying one of the area’s many bike tours (single day from B1,500 and allinclusive multi-day adventures from around B15,000) that delve deep into the region’s beautiful scenery, local culture and WWII history. Where to stay: Hotels in Kanchanaburi town (from B500/night) or resorts close to River Kwai (from B3,000/night)

Club Class Colorful, delicate and generous with the premium produce, Issaya Siamese Club’s revamped dishes bring new life to the Asia’s 50 Best staple. You’ll recognize the names of most dishes, though perhaps not the way that long-time Issaya chef, Ian Kittichai, has reinvented them—a whole Maine lobster adds protein to a classic kaprao (here made with cumin leaves, not basil, B1,800), a condensed presse of crispy-on-the-outside-moist-in-the-middle veal cheek sits in a mild gaeng kua (red coconut curry, B790), capon chicken (reared in Khao Yai) comes as moist gai yang and diced into a dry and spicy, Northern-style laab (B990). 4 Soi Sri Aksorn, Chuaphloeng Rd., 02-6729040-1. Bangkok's brunch pioneer Roast celebrates six years in the business with a six-course set dinner menu. For two nights only (Dec 1-2), join them at The Commons branch for a culinary journey celebrating their past and future. The menu promises a mix of best-sellers like their jalapeno poppers and strawberry waffle, plus exciting new dishes. In addition to the food, diners will receive a journal filled with recipes, the stories behind the dishes and news of future projects. The dinner costs B1,350/peson, with the option of upgrading the main course to Australian grain-fed ribeye for an extra B350. Reservation is a must. It's been 14 years since Bangkok last saw an on-the-bone cut of Certified Black Angus (CBA). Thanks to efforts by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and premium food importer Gourmet One, this fine meat is available in Thailand again. On-the-bone CBA disappeared from our menus during the height of the BSE scare (otherwise known as mad cow disease). For now, though, there's only one place to get it: JW Marriott Hotel's New York Steakhouse. The beef is served in three cuts: a grilled CAB Prime T-Bone (22 oz) for B2,800, the Prime Porterhouse (32 oz) for B4,900 and the Prime Rib Bone In (26 oz) for B5,400. All steaks come with two side dishes and in portions best shared between two. 2/F, JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, 4 Sukhumvit Soi 2, 02-656-7700.
Since it closed down in 2015, cult favorite Opposite Mess Hall has teased its Bangkok devotees with sporadic pop-ups and hints of returning. Now, the OMH team is getting ready for the December launch of their new project, 12:51 by Jess Barnes. But in the meantime, Barnes is treating us to another Opposite pop-up, this time at Viva Market Thonglor. Through Dec 17, Barnes will be bringing back old classics like the pork belly bao, bone marrow dumplings and duck waffle, as well as some exciting new dishes. For those who don't remember Opposite, the restaurant first opened in 2013 and heralded a shift in Bangkok food culture from hotels and fine dining to rustic industrial styling and produce-driven small plates. 387 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor). info@oppositebangkok.com

“My favorite bar is Baan Dok Kaew (Rama 6 Soi 28)—the friendly crowd makes me feel like I’m in the series Cheers. Lhao Lhao (Phahon Yothin Rd.) restaurant is an institution in Ari, great for poo dong (spicy fermented crab) and just drinking. As for cafes, I head to White Rabbit (Ari Samphan Soi 5). I’m not a coffee guy, but they make great coconut sorbet.”

Bar Storia del Caffe Judging by the foot traffic, this Thonglor-born eatery’s reliable Western offerings and photogenic interior have won over the neighborhood. The kitchen serves breakfast all day (B200-390) as well as heartier dishes like the roast baby chicken (B380). Our favorite of the “sweet things” is the fig almond clafoutis (B170). Ari Soi 4, 02-057-9448. Open Sun-Thu 9am-11pm; FriSat 9am-midnight. BTS Ari
Dok Kaew House Bar
BK Taking over an 80-year-old, twoPICK! story house out the back of Rama 6, this ramshackle beer bar boasts rotating taps and a fridge packed full of local brews. Reach and grab the house-made Nher brand’s Weizen (B180), or get them to pour you a Wheat Bomb (B180), and wash it down with plenty of ma la—spicy marinated barbecue sticks of white-pepper sausage and pork belly (B30 each). 71 Rama 6 Soi 28, 096-886-4104. Open daily 5pm-midnight
Goodcery Cafe Pull up a seat in Ari’s healthy food bistro and grocery store and enjoy a portion of Good Toast, topped with fresh veg, ham and a fried egg (B75), or a “Cheat“ steak, featuring slow-cooked pork with riceberry and salad (served Wed-Thu, B149). The skinny brownies are made with chickpea and almond (B140). End with a refreshing juice at B79 per glass. Centric Ari Station, Phahon Yothin Soi 5, 061-3866824. Open Mon-Fri 8am-8pm; Sat 10am-7pm. BTS Ari
One Dee This tiny two-story cafe serves Thai-inspired coconut desserts amid earthy decor to the sound of Thai classical songs. Try the ice cream with roti, tapioca pearls and jelly at B99, or with a toddy palm cake alongside soft-and-chewy tong muan rolls at B189. To drink, the sweet Violet Milk (B70) features

Ong Tong Khao Soi
BK
The people behind Chiang Mai’s PICK! beloved Ong Tong noodle shop have opened a Bangkok restaurant devoted to khao soi (Northern-style curry noodles). The highlight khao soi gai (B69) comes with a creamy yet spicy soup and a tender chicken drumstick, while the khao soi haeng sai oua (B89) is a stir-fried version starring homemade Northern-style sausages and a slightly burnt aroma. 21 Phahon Yothin Soi 7. Open daily 10:30am-9pm. BTS Ari
Pakalolo This cocktail bar takes its Hawaiian theme, adds a dose of the Florida Keys and punches it into something fun and fresh. The Lilia (B320) is a hit of elderflower, thyme, pear vodka, gin and pink guava juice. Though the space definitely screams “bar” louder than “restaurant,” you can still have a proper fill with the Hawaiian Loco Moco (panfried minced beef and fried egg topped on Japanese rice, B240). Ari Soi 4, 02-075-0939. Open Mon, Wed, Sun 5pm-midnight; Thu-Sat 5pm-1am. BTS Ari

BK PICK!
The well-priced, fiery and authentic Isaan dishes stand at odds with the chic decor of cool blue tones, marble tabletops and plantlife. The heady somtam pu plara (B60) comes topped with plentiful kratin beans for a burst of freshness to balance out the fermented fish. On top of booking a table (lunch and dinner), you’ll also want to call ahead to reserve dishes like the komoo yang (grilled pork neck, B90). Phahon Yothin Soi 8, 098-263-5715. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-8pm. BTS Ari
Zoulviet
Schneider Haus With links to Bavaria’s Schneider Weisse brewing company, Ari’s latest beer garden is set in a spacious house that comes with a nice garden, perfect for this time of year. Pretend it’s properly cold out with a heartwarming bowl of German venison stew (B390) and a big glass of the eponymous beer (B260/500ml).
ANDREW STROBRIDGE CINEMATOGRAPHER AND FILMMAKER
“Some Time Blue Cafe (Phahon Yothin Soi 2) does some of the best coffee in Bangkok, has comfortable seating and always plays the best music. My favorite bar is O’glee (Ari Soi 1). Taproom (Noble Reform, Phahon Yothin Soi 7) has good beer too but not the same atmosphere. Also, I really like the new khao soi place called Ong Tong (Phahon Yothin Soi 7).”
24/2 Ari Soi 4, 098-426-9456. Open daily 5pm -11:45pm. BTS Ari
Some Time Blue Cafe Sutida Srirungthum, winner of the National Thailand Brewers Cup 2016, serves a rotating drip coffee (B150 and up), which you can take hot or shaken cold with ice. Try the yuzu lemon drink (B70) for a refreshing alternative to caffeine. The space itself shuns current coffee shop cliches in favor of more classic, Victorian furnishings. 55/5 Phahon Yothin Soi 2, 087-907-0099. Open MonFri 9am-7pm; Sat 10:30am-8pm; Sun 10:30am-5pm
Tacochela
JARADWAN “PEACE” AMRATISHA OWNER, O’GLEE (ARI SOI 1) “My favorite bar in Ari (except mine) is ob-
viously Jim’s Burger (Ari Samphan Rd.) because of its friendly atmosphere. For restaurants, I love Sousaku (Ari Soi 4 South), especially their sushi and nabe—super yummy and reasonably priced.”
Danish microbrewery Mikkeller has opened an Ari bar and restaurant specializing in tacos. The space’s rainbow-colored chairs and brightly painted window frames are contrasted with white brick walls. Try the beef steak tacos (B220) with herby chimichurri sauce prepared by Mexican-born chef Jimmy Rojas Lopez to wash down with one of the 20 beers on tap (from B160). Ari Samphan Soi 1. Open Tue-Thu 5-11pm; FriSat 5pm-midnight. BTS Sanam Pao
Zoulviet Thonglor’s propaganda-strewn Vietnamese restaurant has been reemerged in Ari with a country-house atmosphere of retro tiles and dangling ferns. The menu lists staples like nem nueng (grilled pork with flour wrap and condiments, B220), bun hoy (lemongrass-grilled pork belly with rice vermicelli, B220) and beef pho (B180). Phahon Yothin Soi 9, 02-077-7214. Open Tue-Fri 11:30am-2pm, 5pm-12am; Sat-Sun 11:30am-12am. BTS Ari
NATCHANON VANA, INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER
“I’ve lived in Ari for 24 years. For coffee, I usually go to Aran Bicicletta (128/10 Phahonyothin Soi 2)—spacious and with a good restaurant. And when I want good coffee, I go to Some Time Blue (55 Phahon Yothin Soi 2). If you want my secret eating tip, it’s Soi Voodoo (Ranong 2 Rd.), which has a homey atmosphere and very, very good prices. It’s getting difficult to find cheap drinks in Ari, but Baan Dok Kaew (71 Rama 6 Soi 28) does the job.”

OPEN DOOR
Zoom Sky Lounge The buzz: Zoom Rooftop Bar has added a lounge to its 38th floor perch at Anantara Sathorn Hotel, dishing out modern Asian fusion alongside innovative cocktails. The decor: The vibe is slick and modern, accented with gold but tempered by warm orange couches and dark wood. Floorto-ceiling windows, elegantly framed by long drapes, look out onto Sathorn and the city skyline. Sit at the bar, or in the cushy, booth-like sofas. Despite the five-star milieu, the lounge doesn’t enforce a dress code so rock up in whatever’s comfortable. The food: Chef Adtavorn ‘’Gibb’’ Charoonpontithi (formerly of Pattaya’s Mantra Restaurant & Bar), takes influences from Japan, Italy and everywhere in between for his unashamedly modern menu. We fell in love with the starters: Tuna and Japanese Friends (tuna, salmon caviar, seaweed salad, freshwa-
20
ter eel, miso, lychee foam and ponzu, B600); Black Scallop No. 2, with black lentil, squid ink puree, and lime and porcini butter sauce (B550); and Snow White, burrata cheese with white tomato and Parmigiano (B520). For your main, we suggest the boneless rack of lamb served with basil, garlic and artichoke puree, deep-fried asparagus topped with seaweed and a cherry reduction (B1,100). Finish it all off with the Deconstructed German Black Forest Cake (B300). The drinks: Saranjes ‘’Tum’’ Aiamudomchok, a World Class Cocktail finalist this year, is the brains behind the boozy goodness here. Kick off the evening with Senorita (B330), a play on sangria that blends gin, rose wine, lychee juice, rose syrup and lime. Standing in for ice cubes are frozen fruit, which impart further juicy flavors while thawing. Mango Tales (B340) imitates mango sticky rice, mixing whiskey, Cointreau, mango
puree, sugar palm and lime, all topped off with homemade sticky rice whipped cream. The real highlight has to be the molecular masterpiece Frost Calypso (B330): ice cubes made from Jamaican Calypso coffee are shaken with rum, Tia Maria, maple syrup, Creme de Menthe liquor, milk foam and gassed with mint essence. A twice-daily happy hour (5:30-7:30pm; 11pm-12:30am) which gets you TK deal is the cherry on top. Why you should care: The stellar views, slick service and impeccable food and cocktails make this lounge a sound choice for celebrating special occasions. TABLE TALK
NEW AND NOTED
Happy Days Next door to the Woof Pack building (Bangkok Screening Room, BStore boutique), Silom’s new Vietnamese-themed bar, Happy Endings (1/5 Sala Daeng Soi 1, Silom), goes beyond just pho. Amid an en-vogue mix of pink neon lights and raw concrete, the space serves wild leaf wrapped pork or beef (B150/180), fried fish in herbal wraps (B190) and lemongrass chicken banh mi (B220). There’s also a delicious Australian beef pho (B200). The B340 cocktails include the 100 Dong (spiced vodka, sweet vermouth, roselles syrup, lemon juice and tonic) and Asian Delight (Chinese herbs, vermouth, Aperol, bitters and gin).
Fork Out 4k Cafe (X2 Vibe Bangkok Sukhumvit Hotel, 10 Sukhumvit Soi 52, 063-474-5485) welcomes people for a lazy Sunday brunch. Steel-framed windows, whitewash-brick and turquoise accents set the scene for fusion takes on international and Thai food. There's a tortilla-wrap phad kaprao moo (basil pork, B150), and a twist on pizza with the addition of sai-oua (Northern spiced
sausage) topped with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce (B190). To drink, ask for the cocktail of the month, or get The Barbadian Pirate—a mix of dark rum, Amaretto, pineapple-passion fruit juice and Angostura bitters (B190).
Industrial Size Cast Iron Burgerhaus (Noble Reform, Phahon Yothin Soi 7 [Ari], 062-920-0300) is Ari’s latest spot for a burger and steak fix. Acres of bare cement, exposed ceilings and piping tick the industrial checkboxes, while dim, orange lighting ensures you can chomp down on burgers in relative anonymity. That’s good because things could get messy with the Chunky Blue Cheese Burger (B280) thanks to its juicy, dry-aged beef patty cooked to medium-rare and oozing cheese. Slightly tamer is the Bacon Cheese burger (B240), though the thick cut of crispy bacon won’t do anything for your conscience. They serve their steaks sizzling on cast-iron pans—B800 for Australian ribeye or B660 for New York strip, both of which come with chimichurri sauce. Draft Vedett IPA (B200), Menabrea (B190) and La Chouffe (B220) make the ideal pairing. BK Staff

Bangkok’s ramen lovers were queueing up for hours to get a taste of this Tokyo import back in July, 2017. Menya Itto rode into town boasting of being the no. 1 ranked ramen shop on tabelog.com (Japan’s Wongnai, basically). However, half a year later and, outside the bristling office lunch trade, you can safely walk in and immediately claim a seat. That, we’d argue, speaks more to the fickleness of trends than anything to do with quality. Tucked underground in one of Siam-Phloen Chit’s lesser-frequented malls, this minimalist, light wood affair is about as zen as a fast food venture gets. Saying “fast food” is under-selling Menya Itto, though. The specialty here is a seafood and chicken broth that’s smoother and less greasy than the tonkotsu (pork bone) version which has come to typify ramen in Bangkok. What else stands out here are the two sizes of freshly made noodles and the incredibly tender trio of sous-vide meat toppings (chicken, pork belly and

Tucked down a vibrant, multicultural Silom backstreet, this little cafe revels in the simple pleasure of wellm a d e h o l y b a s i l s t i r- f r i e s . I t s blond-wood furniture and twee pop soundtrack are straight from the cutesy-cafe playbook , but there’s no denying it makes a comfier place to sit of a lunch hour than out on the street or in some godforsaken food court. You’d also be hard pressed to find a kaprao made using better ingredients. Kaprow Khun Phor makes big on the fact they use Company B’s dry-aged Australian beef in the kao kaprao nuea (B129) and kurobuta pork in the kao kaprao moo sub (B79), along with a recipe that relies on only young holy basil leaves and a mix of Thai bird’s eye and prik jinda daeng chilies. Some dishes are simply delicious. The minced beef kaprao relies only on its meat to provide moistness, the stir-fry itself being

authentically dry. Holy basil and garlic all taste excellent and pungent, while Kaprow Khun Phor’s sliding heat scale lets you specify very unholy levels of chili—level 2 (out of 4) would challenge many. It’s on a similar par to the awesome kaprao nuea at Thitid Tassanakajohn’s Baan, and that’s saying something. The chicken kaprao (B79), by comparison, is on a more everyday level—no denying that the meat is succulent, but we could name two dozen spots to get something tasting exactly the same. But at just B79, who’s expecting more? Even the fanciest of kaprao, like one made using fresh scallops, will only set you back B179, despite the amply portioned seafood tasting plump and fresh. Complaints are few. Various kaprao dishes take up about 80 percent of the menu, and what little else there is provides few fireworks—a plate of crispy belly pork (B120) tastes past its prime, a lemongrass salad of raw oysters (B160) slimily offputting, the chrysanthemum juice (B20) too sweet—and service can be painfully slow (we suspect there’s only one wok working behind the scenes). None of this detracts from what’s the lunch cafeteria of many people’s office-break dreams—comfortable, cheap and serving good produce prepared well. Thanks to the bottled local beers at B100, we might even return outside work hours.

pork shoulder). The signature tsukemen (dipping ramen B270/B350) is one of the absolute best around, with a rich and complex broth that unfurls with the flavors of chicken and shellfish, and carries a touch of natural sweetness. To go with, the cold, wholewheat noodles are springy and almost as thick as udon: perfect for dipping. Swimming in the soup, a pair of ground chicken balls carry the satisfying crunch of cartilage and a touch of yuzu. If it’s all a bit intense, there’s a thermal kettle of light dashi stock to water down your broth. The similarly robust soup of the Noko Gyokai ramen (B195/240) should appease even the staunchest pork-bone aficionado, though the mouthfeel is far cleaner and a fine match for the thinner noodles. Be sure not to deprive yourself a deliciously fudgy half-boiled egg (B35). I n co m p a r i s o n , t h e S h i o ra m e n (B230/280) comes in a clear chicken soup that’s lighter and yet slightly saltier, doused in a fine layer of scallop oil. It’s a strangely wholesome tasting bowl of ramen; maybe why we find it a teeny bit boring. We’d definitely recommend the gyoza (B90/5 pieces), though: thinskinned dumplings with almost xiao long bao levels of juiciness. Where things fall down, perhaps, is that this is not at all a place to eat and drink the night away (those 9pm closing times), though the B89 weekday deal on draft Asahi takes the edge off. With slick, smiling efficiency, Menya Itto not only adds a curious new dimension to Bangkok’s ramen scene, it’s a contender for the crown.
