2) On the subject of talking: it’s something women love to do. (In fact, sometimes it can be hard to shut them up! 555.) Unfortunately, too much talking can also get in the way of business. Show her you value her opinion while also avoiding unnecessary chit-chat by finishing the end of all her sentences in meetings. 3) Prove to them that you too care about women’s issues by suggesting valuable new parliamentary posts just for women, like “Secretary of Fashion,” “Secretary of Sharing Our Feelings,” or just “Secretary.” 4) Make positive suggestions for challenging Thailand’s rape culture like telling women to wear an extra layer of clothing in public, and at all costs avoid staying out past midnight.

As by now you probably know, a bunch of old generals have decided that a bunch of old generals are the best people to vote on the new prime minister. But less wellreported than the one-third of senate-members linked to the military or police is the fact that 26 of them are women. 26 out of 250! How did that happen?

1) Studies show that women are more emotionally expressive than men. Avoid missing any small but important body language a woman might be giving off by slowly staring her up and down as she’s talking to you.

#GeneralsToo

With so many women in the workplace, Gen Somsak and the other lads from Army Club Viphavadi are going to have to be careful. We’re living in the #MeToo era. No more well-meaning taps on the butt as you pass a female colleague at the photocopier. Here are some tips to help our hard-working upper house avoid any sexual harassment claims—or worse, viral social media accusations.

5) It’s fine to criticize Yingluck. In fact, it’s encouraged. The new senate is a safe space where opinions on rice pledging and Shinawatra nepotism should be shared. Just remember to keep it professional and leave the PMS and mouse’s ear jokes for the golf club. 6) Always remember to kiss a female senate colleague at the beginning of each parliamentary session. It’s the little things that go a long way.

HOT OR NOT

PRIVATE DINING

For years “private dining” has conjured up images of awkward meals in strangers’ living rooms. Now, chefs without restaurants are looking to reinvigorate Bangkok’s dining scene— see Empty Plates (page 14) and Anita Private Kitchen (page 17). But they’ve got stiff competition. See page 14 to find out how you could get an invite to Gaggan’s home kitchen.

Nancy Chandler’s daughter on the end of an era INTERVIEW

Since 1974, Nancy Chandler’s Map of Bangkok has been a rich source of insider tips for visitors and locals alike. Marking the end of an era, a recent announcement stated that they will be discontinuing after 45 years. We spoke to Nima Chandler, 51, the daughter of Nancy Chandler, about the company’s history.

“Change is inevitable and I like finding the special places within the skyscrapers” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

NEW-Upfront-BK#763-24MAY2019_NEW.indd 4

Can you describe the early days of Nancy Chandler Maps? A month after our map came out, street signs suddenly got English translations—I think it was just a coincidence. In the early ‘70s, my mother started doing drawings for Sawasdee magazine. They asked her and her friends to do a story on Bangkok’s markets with a simple one-page map showing Sanam Luang, Chinatown and the central shopping area. They visited Sanam Luang and got completely lost, so my mom started to take notes of what was where—cock fighting, pigeon feeding for kids, snake charmers. The map turned into a fold-out because they loved the experience so much. How does the map relate to new gens, who tend to use Google Maps on their phones? On Google Maps, there are dots and highways but you probably overlook things since there are no descriptions. We do all your online research for you and put it all in one place, including cool things that you’d have never thought to look for that will make Bangkok personalized for you. For example, movie buffs can find luxury cinemas, special effects cinemas, places that show only children’s movies. We’ve personally picked “Fun Tour Options” that we think are really special, like taking a Thai dance lesson, street food cooking, spending a day as a fisherman, flower arranging, or visiting this boxing master’s home that’s been transformed into a cool cafe. Can you walk us through how each map is made? For Chatuchak, Chinatown and Khaosan we do it on foot and for Sukhumvit we usually drive. For the malls, we list what’s interesting on

what floor. A lot of our content now also comes from online posts by friends or BK Magazine, Bangkok Foodies, Richard Barrow and newspapers. Ideally, we update our map once a year, sometimes every two years. After my mother passed away, I think it was closer to three. It’s very labor-intensive and normally it takes about six months to do one map. Bangkok is chaotic, we try to make sense of the chaos and make you comfortable enough to explore with confidence. Is there a chance of relaunching in the future? We have had a few people putting out feelers to see if they could have us relaunch in some way but personally I need to get some perspective before I talk about opportunities. I’m going to Prague next month on a family trip; I looked at the map and I cried because it just has sightseeing. I can’t tell where the restaurants or the bars are, I can’t tell where the cool neighborhoods are. I love the concept that my mother created with her maps. But as a business concept, without advertising, it’s a labor of love, not a great business investment. How have Bangkok and the places on the map changed over time? My mother, as she got older, didn’t like the skyscrapers and the big shopping malls so much, she would always love the markets and the mom-and-pop shops. For me, I know change is inevitable and I like finding the special places within the skyscrapers and big malls. There is still so much character even in modernity. You’ll stumble across truly unique experiences. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

COCKTAIL COMPETITIONS Unanswered mysteries of the world: how did life begin, what’s the universe made of, and what’s the point in cocktail competitions? We’ve yet to see how mixing drinks can ever work as a spectator sport, which is why we’ve usually to be found in the bar next door drinking without the ridiculous queue. Next.

JAPANESE CULTURE Tasked with listing Thailand’s top 10 cultural destinations, the Culture Ministry resorted to a Japanese-style theme park. Only opened last October, Chiang Mai’s Hinoki Land is a replica of a tourist spot in Japan. Anything, it seems, to keep Thai tourists spending their hard-earned baht at home rather than on another Shibuya shopping trip.

E-TAX Nights out keep getting more confusing. If your internal calculator struggles with the 10-percent service and seven-percent VAT, good luck predicting the price of your drink once you throw in the “E-tax.” A handful of Bangkok bars have been adding this onto the base price of drinks, apparently because they have live music or open past midnight. Not cool—and that’s what our lawyer tells us, too (bit.ly/2JGIpvG).

Everyday Retreat at AYDIN

ENVIRONMENT – a clean aesthetic and universal design that meets the Well Building Standard, 24-hour holistic concierge and tele-consultation

MIND – space and activities to keep residents mentally active, such as craft & hobbies workshops, activities with pets. There's also a 365day Everyday Retreat Program.

Dreams of a permanent healthy holiday This new condominium development in Bangkok feels like an everyday retreat that you never leave We’ve all heard of health and wellness resorts, now it’s time for health and wellness condos. The recently unveiled AYDIN Rama 9 Krungthep Kreetha condominium shuns the typical selling points we’re used to hearing in the wellness hotel & resort world in favor of programs and services focused on health and wellness. It’s typical of holiday retreats, but not so much permanent living spaces. The development is a partnership between Sansiri, the Tokyu Corporation—a Japanese developer with a sizeable number of noteworthy projects under its belt—and Samitivej Hospitals. One of the big-ticket selling points of the condo is actually its out-of-the-way location. It provides access to popular travel routes out of Bangkok, sure, but Sansiri is quick to point out something more important: clear air. The location AYDIN Rama 9 - Krungthep Kreetha is slightly further away from the

smoggy Bangkok core, but still close enough to transportation that you can get in and out easily. The condo’s approach to health and wellness is the star of the show, though. The building does this in a similar way to everyday retreat. It boasts five key concepts that heavily influence the facilities and services— environment, body, mind, soul and like-minded community. Currently, Sansiri constructs most of its projects to meet the WELL Building Standard, one of the world’s premier building standards regarding health and wellness. This basically translates to a bundle of fancy designs focused on well-being and tech like low-toxin color coating, circadian lighting, and tele-consultation, among others. In terms of services and activities, which gives residents easy and convenient access to a 24/7 holistic concierge trained by Samitivej. This all combines to make AYDIN Rama 9 – Krungthep Kreetha a wellness condominium that provides a high-end retreat experience with healthy and well-living facilities and services.

BODY – quality food, physical exercise and beauty. Fully equipped fitness facilities, private spa, Aqua treatment swimming pool.

SOUL – space and events to promote spiritual life, such as merit-making activities and a meditation area

LIKE-MINDED COMMUNITY – allow friendship and companionship to grow through a lobby & multifunctional area, all-day dining area with open kitchen, cinema and karaoke room. This is the new wellness condominium from Sansiri that provides you an everyday retreat with healthy facilities and services from AYDIN AYDIN Rama 9 - Krungthep Kreetha

BK ASKS

“Will I lose weight if I do exercise?” “How do I get a six-pack?”

What questions do fitness trainers hate their clients asking?

Nan Tohchoodee, Tribe People have to understand that exercise is only part of the game, you need to change the rest of your habits too, like what you eat, how much you sleep, etc. I want people to exercise to feel stronger and empowered, losing weight is a bonus.

“Is this going to make me bulky?”

NEW-CoverStory-BK#763-24MAY2019_5.indd 7

Jack Thomas, Base Women often ask this but in fact it’s very hard for them to get big and bulky if they’re not bodybuilding, as women produce a lot less of the hormones needed for muscle growth. In fact, “good shape” comes from having muscle and increasing muscle mass is very important for a healthy body.

Aurimas Juodka, Well With AJ Nobody actually wants to put in the work that is involved in having a six pack—this shouldn’t be the end goal of fitness. Body fat percentage that is under 15% for women and 10% for men is not considered to be healthy, so unless you’re a bodybuilder, striving for a six-pack is not healthy— physically or mentally.

»

Obstacle Course Races, or OCRs, are big business, promising urban professionals of varying fitness levels adventure, a sense of achievement, and endless social media posts of themselves caked in dirt. Among them, Spartan Race is probably the best known here in Thailand. Founded in the US and franchised to 30 countries, the race makes you carry boxes of stones, roll down cliffs and shift sandbags while running varying distances from 5-21 kilometers. But here’s its USP: you don’t have to be a crazy fitness freak to join. While the website might show barrel-chested dudes jumping over fire pits, the truth is they cater to a lot of fitness levels. I’m into training, but I never saw myself being into something like this—until I saw the cut-off times. Even the 5km “sprint” gives you up to seven hours to finish. And how hard can it be to run 5km in seven hours? I trained around four-to-five times a week, mostly doing CrossFit workouts that combine heavy weights and some cardio. I increased my cardio with a weekly 5km run on a treadmill, too. To top it off, I put myself on a keto diet—which seriously interfered with my job as nightlife writer—and did a healthy dose of 30-burpee stints while holding a seven-kilo dumbbell in each hand. (That’s the other thing about Spartan Race: for every obstacle you fail, you have to do 30 burpees.) The race was in Hua Hin, and I spent the car ride there feeling sick to my stomach with nerves while simultaneously staying well hydrated with water. The first obstacle comes before you even reach the start line: a wooden wall that you have to climb—a task that gets repeated about 10 times throughout the race, I kid you not. Generally, the obstacles were fun for me because I’m into lifting and CrossFit. It was the running part that bored me. I went at a comfortable pace, jogged a bit, walked a lot, and did a total of around 200 burpees—though the instructors allowed entrants to cheat by only doing half, I still attempted 30 each time. I finished in two hours and 30-something seconds and the whole experience was actually not too bad. During the whole race, I felt like I had never been so focused in my life—I was just in the zone. I faced an obstacle, I overcame it. Simple. No distractions. Spartan Race brands itself as a scary, challenging feat, which it can be. But it certainly doesn’t have to be. You could do it even if your have sub-average fitness. They haven’t announced when and where the next Thailand race is going to be yet, but they’ve had one here every year for the past two years, so you can count on it coming up shortly. When it does, I’ll be at the start line again. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj

Surfing

Hot yoga

Practising yoga in a room heated to 40 degrees might not seem like the most appealing thing with summer in full swing, but at least it will make the great outdoors feel that little bit more bearable! Not only that, hot yoga also works to increase your heart rate, blood flow and metabolism, meaning you burn more calories. Try it at: Absolute You, various branches: Amarin, Silom, Exchange Tower, Ladprao, Crystal Park, Jas Urban and On Nut. Try 19/F, Liberty Square Bldg., 287 Silom Rd., 02-631-1996. First timers can get 10 classes for B2,200.

Latin Dance

Turn it out next time you’re on Havana’s dancefloor by brushing up on your salsa or cha cha skills. There’s no shortage of places to practice, either, with bars like Pura Vida hosting salsa night on Thursdays (B300/two-hour class) and Latin Thursdays at EmQuartier’s new club, Flamenco (free). Try it at: BIDA (Bangkok International Dance Academy), 9/F, 42 Tower, 65 Sukhumvit Soi 42, 02-712-1238. B500/person for a group class, or B1,500 for a private lesson. This month, get 10 private classes for just B13,000.

Do you like music and hitting things? Then with a little stretch of the imagination, this could be your calling. Incorporating an intense, sweat-dripping drumming session using lightly weighted drumsticks designed specifically for exercising, this full-body workout combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates-inspired movements. Try it at: Virgin Active, various branches: Empire Tower, EmQuartier, Siam Discovery, Central Westgate, Central Festival Eastville and Wireless Road. Membership at Virgin starts at B2,900/month (one-year contract).

Pole Fit

Surfing in Bangkok? Well, kind of. A simulated surf center is the closest you’re going to get to catching some barrels here, but it’ll still help you get beach body ready while honing your strength and balance. Try it at: Surfset, 2/F, Flow House, 120/1 A Square, Sukhumvit Soi 26, 080-936-7738 . B800/person for a group class.

Krav Maga

Pound

Want to feel like a badass without spending years unpacking the mystique of martial arts? A TRAINED EYE

Workout fads from a trainer’s perspective, with founder and CEO of BASE, Jack Thomas

Do these fun workouts count as “real” exercise? It’s certainly real exercise, but the focus with these workouts is more on having fun and getting moving rather than a well-designed program that has been designed for a certain goal.

Can these workouts be as effective as regular gym sessions? For your average Joe or Jane who needs to be more active, these kind of sessions can get them moving and get some basic results. However, if you’re really looking for big or specific results then a proper program with exercises and workouts designed specifically for that goal will yield better results.

Do you have any fitness advice for people who don’t like exercise? Find something that you enjoy doing, that isn’t a chore. This is crucial. Whether it’s sport, dancing, running or circuit training, you’re far more likely to stick with it and get long term results.

2 Months of Counting Macros—What it Did to My Body and Social Life Ask anyone even remotely into fitness and they’ll preach the same mantra: You cannot out-train your diet. As someone who usually works out pretty hard four-to-five times per week, I can vouch for this. That’s why I joined an eight-week fat-loss challenge at my gym, Crossfit Ten500. They run these “fat-loss challenges” pretty regularly at a cost of B7,500 for non-members and B2,000 for members (monthly membership is B4,200). Read that name correctly: “fat loss,” not “weight loss.” The course, said trainer Didac Cuevas, would be all about making sure I got the right daily nutrients to trim away the blubbery consequences of 12-course tasting menus while ensuring my strength and energy levels didn’t suffer. It’s called “macro counting” and it’s an alternative to calorie counting that gets espoused by people who look like race horses. Your body, they say, needs so many carbs, so much protein, and so much fat per day. Get the balance right and you’ll be a well-nourished ball of energy with the looks to show for it. After the first session I came away knowing two things: 1) That 20 percent of me was fat (athletic looking guys usually have around 10-14 percent and women 16-19 percent); and 2) that I should eat 140 grams of protein, 175 grams of carbs and 80 grams of fat per day. In real terms, that meant five meals of what felt like an exorbitant amount of protein (chicken breast, egg white, a mix of chicken breast and egg white) and very little else. This is not a diet that will make you feel hungry. In fact I was regularly full. The sacrifice comes more in cravings for anything sweet or indulgent. The other big sacrifice: social life. Doing this thing meant lunches became sad desk affairs and evenings out with friends were riddled with guilt and anxiety. After eight weeks I came away not only with the makings of a six pack (under the right lighting, at least), but also with the sense that such body obsession is, for me, not worth it. I looked better. I felt better. But I was bored. Now, five months later, that’s probably why I’m back where I started. Oliver Irvine

Digital Detox Asia

Counting Kilobytes Is it time for a digital detox? By Kankanok Wichiantanon According to the Global Digital Report 2019, Thais spend an average of nine hours on the internet daily, compared to the world average of just under seven hours—if you minus seven hours for sleep, that equals more time spent staring at a screen than engaging with the real world. We also rank eighth in the world for time spent on social media, at an average of over three hours each per day—these are some worrying, if not surprising, stats. “Smobies” (cell phone zombies) and “phubbers” (those who snub physical contact in favor of their phones) swarm Bangkok’s streets and restaurants, fueled by our rampant celebrity and influencer culture. Even the unwilling are indoctrinated by unfettered advertising blasting from screens on the BTS, outside malls and inside elevators. Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that digital addiction is a very real problem. Tapping into this emerging epidemic, digital retreats aim to approach the issue in the same way as other addictions or wellness disorders. Offering patients the chance to unplug from the online world and reconnect with real life, these Thailand getaways are your ticket to reducing your internet use—honestly, we can think of a lot stranger wellness trends (goat yoga, anyone?). If you think it’s time for a digital detox, here are some places to check out.

The Hideout Where: Phang Nga Bay The place: Nestled in a lush tropical forest on the secluded island of Koh Yao Noi, this little oasis features charming treetop villas with stunning views of the secluded coast. For those looking to detox, the sanctuary offers an all-round wellness experience in an eco-conscious living environment, as well as other packages like the seven-day Goddess retreat, which boasts a combination of yoga, meditation, embodiment, cer-

emony, hormone balance and healing classes. The therapy: With mindfulness as the main focus, the treatments foster awareness of the presence of devices and creating a balance when it comes to using them. The treatment mixes daily classes of yoga, meditation in the jungle, rejuvenating massages and a private discussion with consultants to create a suitable treatment program—all to help you develop mindful movements and behaviors. The package: The seven-day Digital Package, priced at B91,000/person, includes a six-night stay in the tree-top villa with three daily meals (vegan and Ayurvedic are available) and a trip to the stunning islands around Koh Yao Noi. www.hideoutkoyao.com

Digital Detox Asia Where: Khao Yai The place: Most and other locations of this company’s retreats are held at Parco by Bonanza—a 16,187-sq-meter property hugged by mountains—as three-day packages during the weekends, though sometimes the location changes depending on the client’s requests. Combining a luxurious vacation with a break from technology, the resort features clean yet rustic rooms that face out towards the stunning greenery of Khao Yai. Facilities include a golf course, swimming pool, outdoor camping and horse-riding. The therapy: The program encourages you to take a break from all devices and to engage in the present and your environment. You’ll relax your senses through daily activities like yoga and meditation, as well as making real connections with other human beings without the distraction of technological devices. Apart from that, there’s plenty of time for outdoor adventures like exploring Khao Yai National Park and visiting waterfalls.

The package: The cost is determined by how many people are in the group and the location. If it’s being held at Parco, the price for a twonight stay including all activities is likely to start at B7,500 for a twin room; B10,000 for a private; and B20,000 for a suite. www.digitaldetoxasia.com

The Dawn Rehab Where: Chiang Mai The place: This hideaway on the bank of the Ping River in Hang Dong is the perfect sanctuary for unplugging from it all. They only allow 20 people in the resort at a time to ensure the environment is as calm as possible. The treatments merge Eastern and Western holistic approaches, with therapists on hand to help you formulate a plan that suits you best. The therapy: Here, it’s not just a digital detox. Acknowledging that today’s society is inextricably intertwined with modern devices, their approach aims to create a long-term beneficial relationship with the internet, rather than cutting it out completely. A therapist will dig beyond the symptoms down to the root of your obsession, before teaching you mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy skills to help overcome it. In addition, therapies include tension-relieving massages, meditation, exercise, yoga, Pilates and art classes.

While excessive internet use is an important element, it doesn’t necessarily equate to addiction. We also consider whether it involves obsession and compulsion and what adverse effects it may be having on the user’s physical and psycho-emotional health, relationships, school or work performance. Though “technology addiction” is not yet officially recognized as a mental health disorder, it can destroy lives in a similar way to psychoactive substance addiction and is the subject of much research. Signs of “Technology Addiction” 1. Constant preoccupation with and urge to use the internet. 2. Spending increasing amounts of time on the internet to gain satisfaction (gaming/social media). 3. Using the internet to cope with certain emotional issues. 4. Repeated failed attempts to stop or cut back use of the internet. 5. Continued use of the internet despite negative consequences. 6. Feeling irritable, restless or moody when attempting to control or stop use of the internet. Do you have any tips for people to control their own internet use at home? Do a “Tech Timeout” by abstaining from any technological devices for a period of time (whether at home or at work) and instead read a book or interact with friends. Alternatively, challenge yourself to a “Digital Detox,” which is a similar approach but for an extended period of time—three days to a few weeks.

The package: The 28-day residential internet addiction program will set you back an eye-watering B394,900, though it promises treatment from an expert team of Western-trained psychologists and counsellors who are well-versed in treating both substance and behavioral addictions.

Yesterday Cafe (24/12 Nimmanahaeminda Rd., Chiang Mai, 095-686-9478) blends industrial-loft style with rustic, vintage elements— torn book pages pinned to raw concrete walls; retro cameras; soft brown leather banquettes— for a warm yet masculine feel. During the day, you can work your way through 20 varieties of coffee beans, sourced from Chiang Rai to Honduras. We recommend the drip coffee (B150), or their signature roasted coconut and coffee shake (B120), paired with inventive all-day breakfast bites like the spicy German sausage stuffed croissant with Sriracha mayo (B220) or homemade rosemary toast with beetroot salmon (B240). You can choose your prefered cut and breed from the onsite dry-aging room—we recommend the 30-day dry-aged, smoky charcoal grilled T-bone steak (B320/100g), the juicy wagyu beef burger with blue cheese (B420), or the tender beef short ribs braised and simmered for 72 hours in a green curry soup (B260). Fishing-inspired elements dot the blondwood and Sino-Portuguese tiled dining room, while outside the leafy garden is perfect for chilled-out evenings.

If you’re already feeling suffocated by Bangkok summer, then here’s some good news: Thai Air Asia has announced direct flights to Cambodia’s breezy beach paradise, Sihanoukville. BK Brunch Club promises delicious weekend feasts GOOD MORNINGS

We, like you, know that Saturdays and Sundays are best spent around a dining table, preferably one sagging with wholesome sharing plates alongside awesome company. That’s why, for our next big Bangkok foodie event, we’re putting the spotlight on brunch. For five consecutive weekends starting Jun 15, The BK Brunch Club partners with over 20 of the city’s lightest, brightest, most daytime-friendly dining spots to roll out sensational sharing menus of the finest produce. The BK Brunch Club isn’t your run-of-the-mill Sunday brunch with long buffet lines and the same old cooking stations. We’re talking at least four courses at every restaurant, most or all of them served family-style just for your table, with menus starting from just B1,000 per person. And what’s brunch without booze? Plenty of the Brunch Club venues will also be offering alcohol packages for an additional B500. Who’s taking part? Many of Bangkok’s top fine-dining and fine-casual restaurants, including Ocken, The Meatchop and names that don’t normally do brunch or even lunch, such as 80/20, Jua and Sensi. This is their opportunity to create special dishes—and for you to sample them. Pre-booking starts May 27 for Citibank credit card users, while general booking for all card types opens on Jun 1. 13 Here’s a reason to spend Saturday night in Nonthaburi

14 Bangkok’s supper club trailblazer is now hosting vegan nights

15 Summer is coming at 80/20

Son of one of Australia’s most famous surfboard shapers, Bob McTavish, and the head of sustainable local seafood restaurant North Bondi Fish, Aussie chef Jesse McTavish is something of Bondi Beach royalty. He’ll be dropping by suburban Bangkok’s Sweet Poppy on May 25 for a five-course wine-pairing dinner (B2,600, including six wines). The menu draws on staples from the North Bondi a la carte menu like ceviche with coconut and cucumber, and tuna-on-betel-leaf appetizers, while adding in some meaty appeal in the form of beef fillet with wakame (edible seaweed) mustard and burnt onions. 7pm, May 25. Sweet Poppy, 90/10 Samakee Rd., Nonthaburi, 02-005-5206.

Over the past year, Empty Plates has ingeniously transformed a Ladprao apartment into a warm and intimate, under-the-radar 10-seat fine dining institution. Always seeking new challenges, Swiss-Thai chef-owner Steven John has recently launched a monthly vegan tasting dinner (B2,000/person for seven courses plus welcome cocktail) that centers around organic, local vegetables, herbs and fruits. The social atmosphere encourages you to interact with fellow diners as you experience creative takes on plant-based food. Next vegan event: May 26, 7pm. Ladprao Soi 18, 093-324-0078. To book, visit emptyplatesbangkok.com

Following 80/20’s upscale reinvention earlier this year, Charoenkrung’s hipster hangout has now launched its second tasting menu with summer in mind. Small bites throughout the 11-courses (B3,000) are designed to tickle your appetite, incorporating watermelon, gourd and eggplant with a number of dishes served at room temperature for cooling effect. Fermentation remains at the fore, while all ingredients are sourced from Thai farmers and fishermen, from the beef in the red koji curry to the pickled threadfin fish, served with gourd, herb sauce, smoked bottarga and 10-year aged honey. Biodynamic wine pairing is available for an additional B1,500 (five glasses). 10521054 Charoenkrung Soi 26, 099-118-2200.

AT HOME Asia’s most famous chef, Gaggan Anand, announced via his Instagram page that he will be opening a monthly supper club, which will take place in his home with his family. The cost of entry? A bottle of natural wine or small-batch whiskey, a non-Bollywood vinyl of your choice, a donation to his chosen charity and a DM explaining why you want to attend. Go!

HIGH SOCIETY Though you won’t find any cannabis products at Ladprao’s new Highland Cafe, the legalization activists have ensured a munchie-ready supply of cakes and smoothies to help you relax in a community of like-minded people. They also plan to run workshops on weed related topics.

SMOKIN’ W hotel’s chic signature restaurant The Kitchen Table has unveiled new dining concept “Tipsy Cow,” where 1kg tomahawks (B3,900), ribs (B890/1,600) and briskets (B890/1,600) get treated to State-side techniques like slow cooking, grilling and smoking.

The hotel in question, the madcap Siam@Siam, tells you Taan serves “hyper-local cuisine.” When we say we’re a hyper-local magazine, it means we only cover things in the city center. When Taan says it’s a hyper-local restaurant, it means it sources ingredients from up to 1,000 kilometers away from Bangkok. Like most marketing, then, it’s bollocks. Thankfully for Taan, however, head chef Monthep Kamolsilp’s food isn’t. Uncompromising, inventive, soulful and balanced, the nine-course B1,700 “Sam Rup” set menu is the polar opposite of most hotel Thai dining experiences. Take Taan’s interpretation of a massaman curry, which places large chunks of proper Thai chicken—what you lack in spongy white flesh you gain in texture and flavor— amid a pool of rich and well-spiced gravy. Alongside it as part of your four main courses (this might be the most food we’ve ever eaten

in a single set menu) are two gloriously wellstewed hunks of Thai wagyu beef shank in a southern-style golae marinade, a pad kaprao (basil stir-fry) made with sweet-and-tender Nan pork, and a pair of grouper fish cutlets breaded in popped rice and turmeric. Aside from the grouper, which cries out for some citrus rather than the buttery quenelle of clotted coconut milk with which it comes, we finish everything—and that’s after having already feasted on fermented chicken sausage, king mackerel with stir-fried chili dip and brackish water prawns tossed with tamarind and chili oil. Other missteps are limited only to the goat’s milk-simmered millet that comes with dessert (no thank you) and an awkward and forgettable crispy prawn head filled with bone marrow. We ate alone, but dishes on the “Sam Rup” menu are served family style, so order as more than one person and they’ll scale up the portions a la Nahm. There’s also a B2,100 tasting menu (also nine courses) that’s half dainty bites and half sharing dishes, as well as a lengthy a la carte menu. It’s big, busy and a lot to take in, so follow this advice: order from the sets, pair the starters with the rumchili-and-mango Ku-Sa-Ma cocktail (B330), then move onto a bottle of Christoph Hoch’s Hollenburger Riesling (B1,800). Budget B3,000 per head and you won’t be disappointed. You might, however, need a doggie bag.

16 Old Street Bak Kut Teh continues Singapore’s takeover of Bangkok The buzz: Bak kut teh , Singapore’s much-loved herbal pork soup dish, is having a moment in Bangkok. Joining CentralWorld’s recently opened Song Fa is this almost-decade-old chain with over 22 branches spread across its homeland, China and Indonesia. The decor: Located in the hectic MBK mall, the restaurant gives off the vibe of a spruced-up Chinese tea-house. The high-ceilinged room is enlivened through orange brick walls, retro floor tiles and the occasional touch of greenery. Take a seat at the counter facing the window to watch MBK’s tourists go about their shopping while slurping on your soup or take the wooden staircase upstairs for more privacy. The food: Piping hot and packed full of peppery goodness, the clear broth here is as comforting as they come. A small bak kut teh will set you back B156, or it’s B208 for a large. (Good news: there’s free refillable soup.) Protein comes not only in the form of pork rib, but also chicken, fish and even frog. The signature dry bak kut teh (B182/B234) is also

NEW-New+Noted-BK#763-24MAY2019.indd 16

a must-try, packed with rich, saucy flavor in a clay pot. The adventurous can also opt for the dry mala frog bak kut teh (B400) for a spicy, sweat-inducing meal. Get some veggies in the form of delicious sides like pan-fried kale in oyster sauce (B144) or the pickled cabbage with minced pork (B78). Rice goes for B16. Don’t leave without trying their dessert beancurd (B46) that’s got just the right sweetness. The crowd: Tourist drop-ins, Chinese families and a smattering of Siam cool kids. Why we’d come back: The bak kut teh is legitimately addictive— we could easily eat it on a weekly basis. Choltanutkun Tun-atiruj 1/F, MBK Center, 444 Phaya Thai Rd. 17 This has to be 18 Drink cocktails Bangkok’s most afford- in a mid-century able private dining “recording studio” Leaving behind her Chinese restaurant on Phuket after four successful years, chef Anita Tang’s objective is to experiment with Anita Private Kitchen (Young Place, 118/77-78, Sukhumvit Soi 23, 094-597-3756). Her tucked-away but welcoming open kitchen feels more like dining in someone’s home. Here, parties of up to 16 people can feast on homespun, tailored fusion menus (six-courses from just B1,000) that journey through Anita’s rich past, from Hong Kong to Italy—think plump scallops on a bed of asparagus with ginger and carrot puree; Chinese dumplings stuffed with garlicky mushrooms and thyme; billowing raspberry souffle with crunchy pistachio; and tangy homemade lemonade.

NEW-New+Noted-BK#763-24MAY2019.indd 17

Exiting the lift on the 30th floor, you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into something between a Tokyo record bar and a mid-century recording studio. Lennon’s (30/F, Rosewood, 1041/38 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-080-0088) entrance hall is lined with 6,000 records that visitors can browse, play and even buy. Tear yourself away, because inside, a stunning speakeasy awaits, replete with sultry Art Deco light fixtures, retro brown leather sofas and a spiral staircase leading up to a clandestine cigar lounge. Ontheme drinks adopt song names like Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” (B420), a sweet take on a negroni with whiskey, amaro, Cacao Blanc and Mancino Rosso.

19 Check out the city's first Greek yogurt bar Picking up on one of the top food trends Stateside, Pleased Yoghurt Bar (B/F, EmQuartier, Sukhumvit Rd.) is giving frozen yogurt and ice cream a run for their money. While the shop is small, it’s chock full of healthy goodness along with a few naughty indulgences. Creamy, cool and sugar-free homemade Greek yogurt is served in a variety of cup sizes. Order the Snack Me (B119) in fruity flavor ways like Once Upon A Supermoon, loaded with mango sauce, fresh mango chunks, lime and crunch granola, or decadent Caramel Macchiato, swirled with coffee sauce and topped with caramel and English biscuits.

Perched within stumbling distance of Phra Khanong’s heaving W District, Rintaro (Pridi Banomyong Soi 3, 092-464-1644) is the third branch of a Chiba-born gelateria that boasts of seasonal ice creams. The gold-and-black store displays around 20 flavors at a time (B100 for two) with a list that’ll have Japanophiles drooling—think green tea, yuzu milk, Japanese strawberry, sakura cherry blossom milk, Hokkaido lavender tea and Dainagon red bean. Also expect some local additions like mangosteen. Choose between two cone types, maple (plain) or cacao, which are cooked to order one at a time.

Dishes like the falafel (B130) and mousaka (B245) will be familiar, but get your taste buds tingling with delicacies like the khinkali (B70/piece)—plump dumplings filled with organic beef and aromatic spices that hail from Georgia’s mountain regions—or the unusual satsivi (B190), a cold chicken dish served in walnut sauce. Don’t miss the acharuli khachapuri (B250), a boat of dough cradling oozing cheese and a runny egg yolk.

Crossing 18th-century theater with '40s jazz club, To More (945 Charoenkrung Rd., 095-593-9661) drapes Soulbar's narrow old home with thick red curtains, vintage-look tables and stools, a narrow wooden bar and dim bauble lighting. Full jazz bands return some of the bar’s former flavor every Friday and Saturday, while the rest of the week you'll find DJs spinning jazz, hip-hop and swing. In tune with the decor, signature cocktails are inspired by plays, like the Miss Saigon (B320), a light mix of gin, elderflower, thyme, olfactory lemongrass and foamy egg white, and the spicy, tequila-based Phantom of the Opera (B320) with Thai chili, jalapeno and paprika.

Who makes the best… kombucha? China’s millennia-old fermented tea has made its way onto Bangkok’s health food scene with promises of detoxification and improved digestive health. It’s made by fermenting green or black tea with sugar and scoby—a culture made up of bacteria and yeast. The result? A funky-yet-addictive probiotic- and antioxidant-rich drink that’s sweet, tart and slightly effervescent. We put some local brands to a blind test to see who makes it best. By BK Staff

Pure Luck

Winner!

Who: This New York-hailing brand claims to have been Bangkok's first kombucha brewery and produces 11 flavors of organic kombucha, including raspberry mangosteen and silver jasmine. The taste: Despite having the mildest scent, this is by far the tangiest and funkiest of the lot and also the darkest in color. When you twist the lid, it foams up like soda. On first sip, it hits you with a sharp tang before mellowing out. Verdict: Hit me up! Where: Oleaf Organic Silom (281/19 Silom Rd., 02-234-6139); The Organique (388/18 Sathupradit Rd., 062-465-1699); Wallflowers Cafe (31-33 Soi Nana, 090-993-8653); Farmer Fresh (561 Sukhumvit Soi 1). Price: B125 www.fb.com/pureluckbangkok

NEW-New+Noted-BK#763-24MAY2019.indd 19

The Green Greek Who: This organic shop and cafe stocks everything from fresh produce to natural beauty products but the star of the show is its slow-brewed kombucha, in flavors from raw wild honey to lychee with chia seeds. The taste: This reminds us of drinking a flat Strongbow cider—it's not so bubbly and is the least complex in terms of flavor. That said, its slightly sweet and not so tangy taste means it’s very easy to drink. Verdict: Easy does it. Where: Habito Mall (G/F, 45/19 Sukhumvit Rd., 098-954-6216); Tonic (Q House Lumphini, 1 South Sathorn Rd.). Price: B80 www.thegreengeekbkk.com

Kombucha Bangkok Who: After struggling to find kombucha in Bangkok, this brand’s French owner decided to make his own. Preservative-free and organic, the kombucha comes in flavors from hibiscus to lemongrass—they even make kombucha soap! The taste: Though it has the sharpest vinegary smell, this kombucha yields a clean, mild flavor and a sweet aftertaste. It still packs in some tang and a light fizziness that tingles in your throat. This would be the perfect introduction for newcomers to the drink. Verdict: Test drive. Where: Various pop-ups across Bangkok, or order through their Facebook page. Price: B120 www.kombucha-bangkok.com

Le Kombucha The place: Opened in 2014 by two siblings with a love for kombucha. They brew in small batches and keep the tea raw and unpasteurized to encourage the live probiotic and enzymes. The taste: Quite a strong, full flavor with pleasant tingly fruity notes, though at the same time it almost tastes like it's been diluted with water. Verdict: Water buzz. Where: Sourced Grocers (The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17); Radiance Wholefoods (20/16, Sukhumvit Soi 39); Sunshine Market (28 Sukhumvit Soi 22); Oleaf Organic Shop (281/19 Silom Rd., 02-234-6139). Flo Napasab is from Bangkok and works as an account strategist for a marketing company.

Cherm Nualnim is a marketing research manager as well as being one of Thailand’s strongest female powerlifters.

When she’s not strength training, Nopparat “Nok” Rerkpisut is a lawyer for a city-center firm in Bangkok.

What exercise did you do before strength training?

What exercise did you do before strength training? All I did was yoga.

What exercise did you do before strength training? I did a lot of cardio. Why did you start strength training? I got bored doing the same workout without seeing any results, so I decided to try a strength class at BASE. Why do you enjoy strength training? I love how you see measurable progress—in terms of body shape it gets the best results. Did you have any reservations at first? I thought that lifting heavy weights would make me look big, bulky and less feminine. My perception has completely changed—I’ve seen many positive changes in my body and am stronger and leaner. I’ve also learned about strength training principles, like progressive overload and rate of perceived exertion (RPE). What’s been your biggest achievement in strength? I competed in the recent Thailand Open Powerlifting Competition; to lift at national level was a proud achievement and a fun goal to aim for. On a personal level, I’ve gained strength while losing eight kilos, proving you can build muscle without “bulking up.” What have been the main benefits of strength training? Losing weight (I even had to bring my watch rings in a few notches!), improving my body shape and butt, burning more calories, better posture and providing my body with a strong foundation for all activities. I’ve literally never felt better. Do you think Thais’ attitudes towards strength training are changing? A typical approach in Thailand is to try and lose weight through intense cardio as it’s often perceived that lifting heavy weights is not for women. In fact, it’s pretty difficult for women to get bulky—they would need to consume excess calories or do specific training.

I used to do yoga, trail running and some boot camp-style classes before I started lifting. Why did you start strength training? I suffered from office syndrome and knee pain from trail running. Strength training helped me get through the pain—now it’s completely gone! Did you have any reservations at first? A little bit. I was scared of doing anything that could make my conditions worse but my coach gave me a program to ensure they slowly got better. What’s been your biggest achievement in strength? Having a well-functioning body! I also won the best female lifter in the Thailand Powerlifting competition recently, which was a nice bonus. What have been the main benefits of strength training? For me, living pain-free has been simply life-changing. I am stronger and healthier than I’ve ever been. Do you think Thais’ attitudes towards strength training are changing? Yes slowly, as more gyms in Thailand are now offering lifting classes and equipment. However, there are still many myths surrounding strength training. What would you say to anyone who’s thinking of starting strength training? Be open-minded and do your research. Find a qualified, professional coach who really knows strength training and try it out.

Why did you start strength training? I joined a strength class as I was curious why it was so popular and I’ve been hooked ever since! Now my husband even lifts with me. Did you have any reservations at first? Not really, more like curiosity as to what it was all about. What’s been your biggest achievement in strength? My biggest improvement would be my deadlift—when I first started it was only 80kg, now it’s increased to 140kg. I also competed at the National Thailand Open for Powerlifting recently. What have been the main benefits of strength training? I used to have knee pain whenever I walked— sometimes it got so bad that I couldn’t bend my knee at all so I’d have to walk like a penguin. Now, it’s completely gone! Do you think Thais’ attitudes towards strength training are changing? I think it’s starting to get better slowly. I do hope that in time people would understand the benefits of strength training and would stop believing myths like lifting would make you big and bulky. I can deadlift three times my bodyweight now and I’m still very small! What would you say to anyone who’s thinking of starting strength training? Do it. Don’t be scared or intimidated. Everyone has to start somewhere. Be consistent and you’ll see big benefits.

Coffee & Breakfast

Despite being one of the poshest addresses in Bangkok and situated between two of the city’s swankiest malls—Central Chidlom and Central Embassy— Soi Somkid has remained pretty under the radar, until now. Thanks to the arrival of Siri House by property developer Sansiri, this leafy urban oasis is starting to turn heads. By Dhipkawee Sriyananda Selley

The chic and picturesque Luka (Siri House, 14/2 Soi Somkid, 094-8682639) serves salted caramel green tea lattes (B140) and cold brew coffee (B120) alongside hearty all-day breakfast dishes (try the French toast B270 and acai bowls B280), as well as books, clothing and records from Olympic Digger. Hop over to the quaint Bonnie Dolly’s Tea Room (2/4 Witthayu Rd., 080-080-0003) for towering afternoon tea sets (from B890). For all-American egg and cheese biscuits (B150) and breakfast burritos (B275), head to Central Chidlom’s Flour Shoppe (G/F, Phloen Chit Rd., 091-229-0764) or Central Embassy’s Dean & Deluca (2/F, 1031 Phloen Chit Rd.) for eggs Benny (B325).

Lunch & Dinner You can’t make dinner plans on Soi Somkid without stopping at the second-coming of Quince (Siri

House, 14/2 Soi Somkid, 094-8682639), which has returned with a sleek new mid-century look. Chef Charlie Jones’ updated menu of Mediterranean-inspired dishes relies heavily on the open kitchen’s imposing new wood-fired oven— think soft barbecue octopus (B310) with Jerusalem artichoke ajo blanco and wood-roasted coquelet (a young chicken served whole, B750). At nearby Nai Lert Park Heritage Home, you’ll find Lady L (4 Soi Somkid, 02-655-4446) for classic Western dishes like beef Wellington (B1,250) and slow-cooked lamb shank in red-wine sauce (B780), or for a taste of delicious Thai cuisine, Ma Maison (4 Soi Somkid, 02-6554773) doles out river prawns in red curry sauce (B1,200) and hormok (steamed fish curry pudding wrapped in banana leaf, B160). Primed for special occasions, Spirit Jim Thompson (16 Soi Somkid, 02-017-7268) combines fine dining with authentic Thai recipes.

Jacqueline

Drinks Soi Somkid has just one drinking spot, but trust us, you’d be happy to kick back at Jacqueline (Siri House, 14/2 Soi Somkid, 094-868-2639) through the night. The elegant new cocktail bar is the brainchild of nightlife impresario Sanya Souvanna Phouma and takes influence from former First Lady and ‘60s style icon Jackie Kennedy, serving spirit-forward drinks like the Jackie O (Absolut vodka, Iron Balls gin, Cointreau, lychee liquor, lychee and lime, B340). Neighboring Central Embassy adds some variety with Park Hyatt’s rooftop Penthouse Bar + Grill (34-36/F, Park Hyatt, 88 Wireless Rd., 02-011-7480)—try their spirit-forward 250 CC cocktail (B360)—and the beach club-like Siwilai City Club (5/F, Central Embassy, Phloen Chit Rd., 02-160-5631).
