It’s ironic that creative agencies all look the same. How can we keep pushing this further?

INITIAL RESEARCH

As a non linear thinker, it is often difficult for me to follow a standard process. By creating these research journey maps, I can track the way my thought process goes in real time. Looking back on how I get from point a to point b helps to put context to the material and solidify conclusions.

ADVANCING RESEARCH QUESTIONS

As alternative methods of education have been a large contributer to my research, I decided to incorporate my findings into my process as well. Thinking by hand allows for more freedom of creativity. I printed stickers of my key research topics and applied them to Caroline Pratt Unit Blocks. Keeping myself on a Tabata timer of 30 seconds on: 3 minutes off, I spent 30 seconds pairing blocks with different topics then 3 minutes writting down thoughts and connections, then repeat. After 6 rounds I narrowed it down to these three pairings in order to develop my three advancing research questions.

#1 How can we apply alternative education to an outdated work environment structure?

#2 How can facilitation techniques be incorporated into the work flow to promote thinking by hand and collaboration?

#3 How can the work environment be a representation and driver of the company mission?

Three-dimensional thinking was obviously an essential phase of rethinking the physical workspace. With the objective of making it as malleable and responsive as our ever-changing needs, the solution didn’t emerge from a singular design solution but from a dynamic design system made of polyforms, solid figures that form by joining one or more equal cubes face to face.

MULTIVERSE

FURNITURE CONCEPT PROTOTYPING

The use of 3D-printing was a key element in the process of translating the Molecubes from the two dimensions of a screen to an actual physical furniture concept. By prototyping the shapes at a 1/100 scale, I could then manipulate them with ease to see how they interconnect with the constraint of gravity, try different configurations. Not only it was a way to put the modularity of the system to the test, but also to simulate its playfulness.

PRODUCING THE FURNITURE After designing the Molecube furniture concept, I needed to find a furniture company that would be able to produce it. I knew I wanted to produce locally and that there was a tight budget and deadline attached to the project. Having met with 4 furniture makers and a 3d printing company I decided to work with Amsterdam based TWO-O. Since their workshop is close to the 72andSunny office, I was able to jump over to check in on the process. The Molecubes had to be lightweight enough to carry and pair well with the current office design, to get a second opinion on this matter I brought in a colleague who specializes in the architecture and has been managing the design and expansion of the agency. After showing the project overview and my auto-cad drawing to the TWO-O team we decided to go with colored MDF for the larger blocks and with oak for the smaller blocks since the oak is heavier. I decided to keep to this simple palette so that the work space would not be distracting for the teams while the different tones would still allow the blocks to create a pattern. Throughout the production many problems arose from weight issues to unavailable material, but this allowed me to think on my feet and try to work in solutions. There is a fine line between sacrificing aesthetic and function. We toed that line it with this furniture concept.

DEFECTIVE CANDIANI DENIM DONATED BY THE AMFI DENIM MINOR

GRANIGO

As and accessory to the Molecubes furniture concept, I created Granigo; A slab of compressed denim that acts as a connected between the shapes, like a tabletop.

COLLECT + CUT IMBUE + COMPRESS

1. Collected defective denim from the Amsterdam fashion industry. 2. Built a mold and cover in wax paper. This mold was made to with specifications that would ensure there would be 0 wasted denim. 3. Cut 15 layers of denim and put to the side.

SAND + POLISH

4. Combined the the bio resin + hardener, mixing until smooth. 5. Placed a layer of denim into the mold. 6. Soaked a layer of denim in the resin, covering it completely on both sides. 7. Added a second layer and pressed it down into the one beneth the repeated the above process. 8. Once all 15 layers were applied, a board wrapped in wax paper was applied to the top and copressed with clamps.

9. The mold was left to set for 7 days. 10. Once the solidified denim was taken out of the mold it was left outside to dry out and residue for 1 day. 11. The used a power sander until the fabric texture peaked through. 12. The material was then finished by hand polishing with light grain sand paper.

PORTAL EXPERIMENT 1

Using the shapes of the Molecubes, I recreated the QR code in 3D with a laser cutter. This worked but was not responsive in certain lighting. The shadows from the pieces were causing the camera to misread the edges of the design.

PORTAL EXPERIMENT 2

Flattening the QR code eases the experience, but to try and bring back the depth of the first experiement, I created larger versions of the shapes that will serve as an indicator of which portal it is. For this experiment, I worked with the left over material from the furniture.

FINAL PRODUCT

Each of the portals are hand made using scrap materials from the furniture. I first sketched the shapes out onto the material then cut them using an electric bandsaw. With wood glue the pieces are fitted into each other then sanded down to create a flat outline. The QR code labels are printed onto the wood using a UV printer.

DESIGNING A DYNAMIC DESIGN SYSTEM

It was important to me that this project keeps the for the people by the people mentality. It only made sense to create an identity that allows the community to become a part of the design process. In order to create this dynamic system I created hundreds of shape combinations in Adobe Illustrator that would be randomized through code so that no two titles would come out the same. I knew how I wanted it to look but didn’t know how to make it work so I collaborated with a 72andSunny colleague on writing the code for this system. Staying close to the development, I was able to understand what is possible.

Having experience with designing in 3D programs like vectorworks and sketchup, I challenged myself to learn basic animation. I learn best when there is a task that needs to be achieved. I wanted the logo to start in the position of the compact furniture positioning and explode to become a new version of the 72andsunny logo. This bursting movement reflects the big bang theory, calculated while still randomized enough to look natural.
