HONEY IN THE ROCK
Chalk Horse 8 Lacey Street Surry Hills NSW 7 - 16 June, 2012
Artistic collaboration is fraught with risk. A dilution of ideas and compromise of individual identity are concerns that artists must tackle, and accept, for a successful partnership to thrive. While Melbourne based artists Ghostpatrol and Miso have distinctively independent styles, they clearly share convergent ideologies. Honey in the Rock marks their first major collaborative exhibition since 2008. In it, we find all of the characteristics that have helped define them as individual, practicing artists over the past decade. But more than that, we find a balance of aesthetics and methodology that results in a resoundingly singular, cohesive vision. In the galaxies of Honey in the Rock there are no absolutes, but an endless search for something greater than ourselves: a life in the dark. These works are not beacons signaling change, nor are they markers of warning. Instead, they play with the notion of physical and spiritual exploration as a means of discovering knowledge in another time. Heavy ink washes allude to a celestial depth; a true black. The emergence of patterns and shapes behind the central figures speak of distant galaxies, chemical structures, and the promise of undiscovered materials. These works address the innate human desire of striving for the unknown, shedding light on our fascination for discovery and conquest. They dispel our fears of catastrophic apocalyptical events and bring hope, wonder and an assurance of something beyond. Despite the enormity of their worldview, these works are intentionally sparse, avoiding over intellectualisation and boorish sincerity. In this way, they read less like artificial narratives and more like film stills - fragmented scenes from a near future that is, at once, elusive and inevitable. Ghostpatrol and Miso are masters of reduction. They engage with universal concerns and reduce them to an intimate scale. It is this binary opposition of whole and self, macro and micro, ethereal and corporeal that makes their work so compelling. Honey in the Rock is definitive body of work for Ghostpatrol and Miso. It is testament to a rare clarity of vision an unwavering dedication to the future of their art, their audience, and themselves. - Sean Irving
