BLACKARTPROJECTS & NATALIE RYAN PRESENT
SECOND SECOND NATURE NATURE B L A C K
SECOND NATURE Second Space Projects 7 Campbell Street Fitzroy, Victoria 17 - 26 March, 2017
SECOND NATURE Natalie Ryan’s practice is a study into the aesthetic representation of the cadaver throughout Western history and it’s inclusion in contemporary art. Drawing from existing methodologies used for preserving the human and animal body, she is interested in the process of imaging the natural world and the exchange between science and art that has allowed this. Ryan’s Second Nature extends this focus by considering the way the natural world is artificially reconfigured for display within institutions. Drawn from her studies into anatomical and natural history museum collections, Ryan presents an assembly of specimens from zoological, botanical and geological groups outside of their original environment, as a secondary mode in which to view and engage with displaced nature.
