T

he Black Business Association along with our publishing component The Black Business News Group offers this Shopping Gallery to our members, friends and supporters as a reminder, a convenience and, hopefully, a facilitation tool. This is the nationwide season for encouraging people to spend money on gifts, toys and Earl “Skip” Cooper, II celebrations - not a problem, Pubisher/Editor-In-Chief not a complaint. There is this consideration though - in how many ways do we, The Black Community - benefit from the annual economic flurry. Our position, as an agency that advocates for the success and protection of black-owned businesses and black entrepreneurship, is that we fully participate in the season. We encourage you to Shop Black in every way possible during the celebration season. Our celebration season includes: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years, Dr. King's Memorial and Black History Month November through February. We must employ Black Dollar Buying Power ($1.3+ trillion) in our businesses and communities to empower our quest for sustainable economic development. The articles on pages 8 and 9 offer profiles of our collective economic power and force. But each one of us has to harness our little bit of that economic power and direct the force for full effect on our local communities. Buy products and services from your local artists and crafts community, your restaurant owners and caterers, your toy makers, your clothing designers, your travel agents, your hotel owners, your book stores, your cultural entrepreneurs and on and on. Remember back when your aunts, uncles or grandparents would open a savings account in your name to get you started on saving for the future. Open bank accounits in local Black-owned banks in the names of your young relatives this holiday season. No Black Bank in your neighborhood - bank via the Internet. That's what technology is for. We now have the means to focus our little bit of economic prowess locally, nationally and internationally. Most of the black-owned retail companies promote their products and services somewhere online. Check the Shopping Gallery displays for email and website addresses. The Shopping Gallery publication does not even scratch the surface of what our business owners,

Season's Greetings

Top Holiday Season Digital Trends

By Sue Yasav

he holiday season is nearly in full swing. How will it be different than past seasons? The most striking difference is not in what consumers are buying, it’s how they are shopping. Consumers have been gravitating toward digital over the past decade, but this year, shoppers have indicated that they will pass a new threshold. For the first time, they anticipate making the majority (51%) of their holiday purchases online, according to a study by Synchrony Financial*. This has been steadily increasing over the past three years, up from 47% in 2015 and 49% last year. Which devices will they be using to make these purchases? Consumers indicate that one in five holiday purchases will be made on their mobile device. So, not only is shopping trending toward online purchases, many shoppers are planning to do it on-the-go. Shoppers like mobile because, quite frankly, it’s easy and always around. The mobile device is with the shopper continuously. Whether riding on a bus, waiting in line for coffee or binge watching your favorite Netflix show. If you think of the perfect gift for Aunt Helen, you can order it immediately. And, not to worry about keeping track of your purchases — half of mobile shoppers say they use mobile because they can easily view the confirmation in their email. And, discount hunting via mobile is ubiquitous. More than onethird (36%) of shoppers say they will shop via mobile during the

holiday season because they can more easily link their email offers and coupons to their purchases. So, bargain hunters don’t have to worry about missing out on a good deal. The ability to scan available coupons and download offers gives shoppers confidence that they are getting the best price. With the ease of shopping online and the widespread availability of next-day shipping, consumers may

be “hunting for a deal” on specific days like Thanksgiving, Black Friday or Cyber Monday. This is perhaps due to the prevalence of deal hunting throughout the season. Consumers have been less hooked on shopping on specific days, if they are certain they can find the best price on any given day. How are retailers responding to these trends? One way is having websites that are optimized no

be less rushed to get their shopping done early this holiday season. Only 44% of consumers say they will be shopping earlier this year. Last year, 53% said they would be shopping earlier than in the past. And, shoppers are less likely to

matter which device consumers use — laptop, tablet or mobile. Retailers are spending time and resources building websites that are easy to navigate and intuitive. The experience is important — the top reason shoppers delete a retailer

lack Americans are just 13 % of the U.S. population, and yet, we’re on trend to have a buying power of $1.4 trillion by 2019. A new Nielsen study hints that marketers may want to start developing a better consumer-producer relationship with African Americans if they want to make big bucks. Titled “The Multicultural Edge: Rising Super Consumers,” (www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/ reports/2015/the-multicultural-edgerising-super-consumers.html) the

report finds that the Black American sweet spot, in terms of buying power, lies in ethnic hair and beauty aids (surprise, surprise). African-American dollars make up a whopping 85.8% of the industry. The next product consuming Black American money is hot sauce. Yes, hot sauce. Sriracha and its ilk enjoy a 25.4% share of AfricanAmerican dollars. Yum. While we’re talking about food, when it comes app is due to poor functionality, according to the Synchrony Financial 2017 Digital Study. Also, shipping will be a big element of the online shopping experience this year. Many retailers have graduated from two- to threeday shipping to one-day, or nextday shipping. And, since shoppers say they will be shopping later in the season, this will be a big deal this year. Finally, and perhaps most

to unprepared meat, seafood and poultry, Blacks account for nearly 18% of the industry’s dollar volume. And here’s an interesting tidbit: We are the only ethnic group who take up a significant share of the molasses, table syrup, and sweetener industry — 14.4%. This is reflective of Black Americans’ proclivity to the “tastes and traditions of the American South.” Third, hygiene products and toiletries — such as soap, body wash and fresheners — win about 17% of our hard-earned cash. While knowing what Black Americans are inclined to buy is valuable, it’s also important to understand what motivates us to make a purchase. According to the Nielsen, nearly 40% of AfricanAmericans expect the brands they patronize to support social causes. A whopping 78% of Blacks say that their cultural and ethnic heritage is an essential part of who important, bargain hunting remains a key ingredient in the shopping habits of consumers, whether they are early bargain hunters or last minute deal seekers. The ability to check product reviews, compare prices and use coupons is a key part of the holiday shopping experience. If the consumer can do it all on one website, great! If not, off they go to the next retailer.  www.targetmarketingmag.com/post/topholiday-season-digital-trends/#ne=4a21b

they are, which, in turn, can affect the purchases they make. Nielsen adds that people of color have always been influential in attracting U.S. mainstream consumers to “ethnic traditions and tastes” such as hip-hop/rap music and fashion. The study pointed to TV’s cultural relevance shift, citing FOX’s Empire and ABC’s Blackish and their marketability. If advertisers were smart, Nielsen concludes, they will start to move away from appealing to the usual demographic cues. “Savvy marketers who have noticed this shift are responding with marketing efforts that recognize ethnic identity as much more malleable, fluid and contextual, while content providers create media strategies to reach these consumers with cross-cultural and linguistic dexterity,” the study said. To wrap it all up, the study says the ROI for consumers of color are greater than the majority group. “Culture is a key element in any effort to reach today’s diverse consumer markets,” the study concluded. “You can connect with […] a growing percentage of new mainstream non-Hispanic whites who share multicultural attitudes which are reflected in their viewing and shopping behaviors.” http://madamenoire.com/519548/what-do-wespend-our-money-on-the-buying-power-of-blackamericans/#

11 Young African American Entrepreneurs to Support this Holiday Season By Natural Hair Kids http://naturalhairkids.com/ author/admin/

I

just want to start off by saying that this is an article that you definitely want to read with your children if they are expressing interest in entrepreneurship. It’s never too early or late to develop an enterprising child. Children who think like entrepreneurs will develop leadership skills, heighten their creativity and become excellent problem solvers. In fact, there are plenty of kids in the African-American community who are making waves in the business world. Here are some that you should definitely support this holiday season:

Gabby's Bows Invented by a seven year-old and her Mom, Gabby’s Bows solves the age-old problem of disappearing barrettes and has now transformed into a highly successful barrette business for this mother/ daughter duo. Gabby is very involved with the day-to-day operations of the business, including: tackling inventory, data entry, sales tax coding, filling orders, writing thank you notes, etc. “She gets upset if I conduct any business without her.” Her mom says. It’s no surprise that Gabby was also recently named SC Young Entrepreneur of the Year (the youngest to ever receive this award). GaBBY Bows come in eight colors and are available for purchase in nearly 100 Walgreens, Bilo and Once Upon a Child stores in SC, GA and NC. Shop online or find a store near you at gabbybows.com.

BeeSweet Lemonade The world first learned of Mikaila Ulmer when she fearlessly entered ABC’s show Shark Tank with her BeeSweet Lemonade. At just 10 years old, she secured a sweet deal with investor Daymond John, who put up $60,000 for a 25% stake in the company. But the deal didn’t end there, in addition to his investment, Daymond stated that he would mentor Mikaila. But Mikaila has been enterprising for a long time. She got

bit by the enterpreneurial bug at just four years old, when her family encouraged her to enter a children’s business competition. Not only is Mikaila serious about her business, she’s also serious about providing a sustainable life for others. She makes her BeeSweet Lemonade with local honey, and a percentage of her earnings go towards saving the honeybee. Support Mikaila’s business at beesweetlemonade.com.

E & C Popcorn Company Ethan and Collier run an online store that specializes in gluten-free gourmet caramel popcorn. There parents set out to teach the two about entrepreneurship and thus, the E & C Popcorn Company was born. Their popcorn contains only the freshest ingredients with no preservatives or high fructose corn syrup. Their popcorn is also air-popped making it free of fatty oils. Yum! Get your popcorn fix at www.eandcpopcorn.com.

Super Business Girl Asia Newson, aka Super Business Girl, started her candle business when she was just five years old. She learned how to make candles from her father, and instantly began turning her creations into profit. As the youngest entrepreneur in Detroit, she would eventually gain worldwide recognition when 20/20 cameras caught her selling her candles to people on the street. Asia states that her goal is to “recognize the potential in every child and develop intrinsic security that makes optimum use of their individual talent.” Today, Asia’s business Credit:ellentv has expanded into a fullfledged empire. In addition to candles, she now sells t-shirts, accessories and more on her online store. You can also catch Asia giving motivational speeches

her entire collection.

Mr Cory’s Cookies

Moziah Bridges, also known as Mo, started his company Mo’s Bows at nine years old, when he struggled to find fun and fashionable bow ties that suited his personality. He took initiative and created his own, using his Granny’s scrap fabric. You may have seen Mo on ABC’s Shark Tank. He didn’t secure a deal, but Shark Tank investor Daymond John was so impressed with Mo and his business that he offered to mentor Mo for free. Mo states that bow ties make him look and feel good, but more importantly, he believes designing the bow ties allow him to help make the world a better place. View Mo’s Bows at http://mosbowsmemphis.com.

Credit: Mr Cory’s Cookies Mr. Cory is such a little gentleman. He takes his business so seriously, that he called himself Mr. Cory, and this was just at nine years old! And thus, we now have Mr. Cory’s Cookies. The cookies, which practically melt in your mouth, are all-natural and only made from high quality ingredients. lympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad made history in 2016, when she became the first member of the U.S. Olympic team to compete in hijab. Now she's making history again by teaming up with Mattel to create a Barbie designed after her. But this is more than a special-edition doll: It's the first-ever Barbie to wear a hijab, which makes it a crucial win for inclusivity and representation. Mattel released the doll as part of its “Sheroes” collection, which features a line of Barbies modeled after a diverse range of accomplished women. Gabby Douglas (Olympic Champion), Ava DuVernay (Director, Author, Documentarian), Ashley Graham, and Misty Copeland (Prima Ballerina) are among the famous figures who have been given the Barbie treatment.  www.glamour.com/story/first-ever-hijabwearing-barbie-ibtihaj-muhammad http://nytlive.nytimes.com/ womenintheworld/2017/11/14/in-afirst-mattel-introduces-a-hijab-wearingbarbie-doll http://barbie.mattel.com/shop/en-us/ba/ sheroes-dolls Ava DuVernay & Barbie 31  2017  Black Business News  Shopping Gallery  1-323-291-7819

Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken is Incredibly Good By Shirley Hawkins

I

f you like biting into juicy, succulent, mouth watering chicken just dripping with fall-off-the-bone flavor, look no further than Honey’s Kettle Chicken located in downtown Culver City. People travel from miles around just to savor Honey’s Kettle Chicken, voted “Best Chicken in L.A.” by Los Angeles Magazine and the Huffington Post. And no wonder—its owner, chef Vincent Williams, has spent 45 years frying up millions of pieces of chicken just oozing with that unmistakable Southern flavor. Founded 17 years ago by husband-and-wife team Vincent and Arlene Williams, the duo only uses farm-fresh, hormone and antibiotic-free chickens dipped in a secret-recipe batter and fried in 100% peanut oil. The result is a light and crispy

battered fried chicken is nongreasy and made from scratch. ‘I fry about 600 pounds of chicken a day,” boasted Vincent, who said that he uses only the finest quality ingredients. He always keeps his ingredients top notch because one of his goals was to build “one of the greatest restaurants ever made.’’ The chicken will knock you out-but don’t forget to order Honey’s magnificent sides. If you like handmashed potatoes, freshly prepared. coleslaw, lip-smacking macaroni and cheese, sautéed green beans, scrumptious catfish, delectable corn on the cob, tasty pecan pie, iceshaker lemonade and homemade biscuits dripping with honey, make a bee-line to Honey’s. There is always a lunchtime crowd eagerly lined up and trailing out the door, patiently waiting to get their Honey ‘fix.’ Customers have been known to tear open their orders in the paper bag and start munching the crackling, golden pieces right there on the curb. Fans have even driven from as far away as Las Vegas and San Diego to bite into Honey’s famous bird, and celebrities such as rapper Kendrick Lamar, singers Keisha

Cole and Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, Stevie Wonder, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and former model Tyra Banks have all ordered from Honey’s. Believe it or not, William’s business was not an overnight success. “I went through 30 straight years of pure hell,’’ Williams recalls in his efforts to keep his business afloat. ‘’But my goal now is to build a multi-billion dollar company and to make sure to keep it in the family.” Williams is a long-standing member of the Black Business Association. ‘’The chicken is outstanding,’” said Earl ‘Skip” Cooper II, publisher and editor of the Black Business News and the CEO and president of the Black Business Association. “Their sides, including their mashed potatoes and green beans, are outstanding. And I really have a thing for their original blueberry biscuits.” Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken is located at 9537 Culver Blvd. in Culver City. Parker House Sausage (www.

parkerhousesausage.com) was started by Chicago entrepreneur, Judge H. Parker who came to Chicago from Montgomery County, Tennessee with little more than the conviction that there was a potential market for homemade sausage products prepared according to his mother’s recipes. By 1919 Judge Parker began selling his unique blend of herbs and spices mixed with flavorful, savory sausage from a horse drawn cart on a retail basis. Recognized as one of the oldest family owned businesses in the U.S. In 2014 Parker House expanded its product line to include chicken products including breakfast sausage, hot links, and smoked sausage.

I'm Judging You is her debut book of humorous essays that dissects our cultural obsessions and calls out bad behavior in our increasingly digital, connected lives—from the cultural importance Luvvie Ajayi of the newest Shonda Rhimes television drama to serious discussions of race and media representation to what to do about your fool cousin sharing casket pictures from Grandma's wake on Facebook. Hacks: The Inside

Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns that Put Donald Trump in the White House

I

by Donna Brazile

n the fallout of the Russian hacking of the Democratic National Committee-and as chaos threatened to consume the party's c o n ve n t i o n- -D e m o c r a t s turned to a familiar figure to right the ship: Donna Brazile. Known to millions from her frequent TV appearances, she was no stranger to high stakes and dirty opponents, and the longtime Democratic strategist had a reputation in Washington as a onestop shop for fixing sticky problems. What Brazile found at the DNC was unlike anything she had experienced before-and much worse than is commonly known. The party was beset by infighting, scandal, and hubris, while reeling from a brazen and wholly unprecedented attempt by a foreign power to influence the presidential election. Plus, its candidate, Hillary Clinton, faced an opponent who broke Donna Brazile every rule in the political playbook. Packed with never-before-reported revelations about what went down in 2016, Hacks is equal parts campaign thriller, memoir, and roadmap for the future. With Democrats now in the wilderness after this historic defeat, Hacks argues that staying silent about what went wrong helps no one. Only by laying bare the missteps, miscalculations, and crimes of 2016, Brazile contends, will Americans be able to salvage their democracy.  www.amazon.com/Hacks-Inside-Break-ins-Breakdowns-

We're Going to Need More Wine:

Just Mercy: A Story

of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice— from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time

Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True

G

by Gabrielle Union

abrielle Union gives us a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman. The forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting when in 2016, with honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real." In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and selfdiscovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.  www.amazon.com/Were-Going-Need-More-Wine/ dp/0062693980

B

r y a n Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. 

ore than forty years after President Johnson signed the landmark Fair Housing Act into law, residential segregation in America remains unresolved. Designed to help dismantle the nation’s racially divided housing patterns, the act has gone largely ignored by every presidential administration— Democrat and Republican alike—since 1968. In Living Apart, ProPublica investigates this failing, particularly how subsequent leaders, following President Nixon’s lead, have declined to use the billions in grant dollars awarded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development as leverage to fight segregation. Their reluctance to enforce a law passed by both houses of Congress and repeatedly upheld by the courts reflects a larger political reality. Again and again, attempts to create integrated neighborhoods Nikole E. Beyond the Messy Truth: How We Came Apart, How We Come Together

V

by Van Jones

an Jones burst into the American consciousness during the 2016 presidential campaign with an unscripted, truth-telling style and an already established history of bridge-building across party lines. His election night commentary became a viral sensation. A longtime progressive activist with deep roots in the conservative South, Jones has made it his mission to challenge voters and viewers to stand in one another’s shoes and disagree constructively. Now, in Beyond the Messy Truth, Jones offers a blueprint for transforming our collective anxiety into meaningful change. Tough on Donald Trump but showing respect and empathy for his supporters, Jones takes aim at the failures of both parties before and after Trump’s victory. He urges both sides to abandon the politics of accusation and focus on real solutions. Calling us to a deeper patriotism, he shows us how to get down to the vital business of solving, together, some of our toughest problems. “The entire national conversation today can be reduced to a simple statement— ‘I’m right, and you’re wrong,’” Jones has said. But the truth is messier; both sides have flaws. Both parties have strayed from their highest principles and let down their core constituencies. Rejecting today’s political tribalism, Jones issues a stirring call for

a new “bipartisanship from below.” Recognizing that tough challenges require the best wisdom from both liberals and conservatives, he points us toward practical answers to problems that affect us all regardless of region or ideology: rural and inner-city poverty, unemployment, addiction, unfair incarceration, and the devastating effects of the pollution-based economy on both coal country and our urban centers. In explaining how he arrived at his views, Jones shares behind-the-scenes memories from his decades spent marching and protesting on behalf of working people, inspiring stories of ordinary citizens who became champions of their communities, and little-known examples of cooperation that have risen from the fog of partisan conflict. In his quest for positive solutions, Van Jones encourages us to set fire to our old ways of thinking about politics and come together where the pain is greatest.  www.amazon.com/Beyond-Messy-Truth-ApartTogether/dp/0399180028
