National Women's History Month BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION Throughout history, extraordinary women have fought tirelessly to broaden our democracy’s reach and help perfect our Union. Through protest and activism, generations of women have appealed to the values at the heart of our Nation and fought to give meaning to the idea that we are all created equal. As today’s women and girls reach for new heights, they stand on the shoulders of all those who have come before and carry forward their legacy of proud achievement. This month, we celebrate countless pioneering women and the victories they won, and we continue our work to build a society where our daughters have the same possibilities as our sons. Courageous women have called not only for the absence of oppression, but for the presence of opportunity. They have demonstrated for justice, but also for jobs — ones that promise equal pay for equal work. And they have marched for the right to vote not just so their voices would be heard, but so they could have a seat at the head of the table. With grit and resolve, they have fought to overcome discrimination and shatter glass ceilings, and after decades of slow, steady, and determined progress, they have widened the circle of opportunity for women and girls across our country. Today, more women are their family’s main breadwinner than ever before. Women are nearly half of our Nation’s workers, and they are increasingly among the most skilled. At the same time, more than 60 percent of women with children under the age of 5 participate in the labor force. This increasing participation of women in our workforce has bolstered our economy and strengthened our families, and it has demonstrated that the policies that benefit women and working families benefit all of us. But not all of the rules that govern our workplaces have caught up with this reality, and today, too many of the opportunities that our mothers and grandmothers fought for are going unrealized. That is why I am committed to tearing down the barriers to full and equal participation in our economy and society that still exist for too many women. All women deserve equal pay for equal work and a living wage; the Congress needs to raise the minimum wage and pass a law that ensures a woman is paid the same as a man for doing the same work. I continue to call for increased workplace flexibility and access to paid leave — including paid sick leave — so that hardworking Americans do not have to choose between being productive employees and responsible family members. And I have proposed a plan that would make quality child care available to every middle-class and low-income family in America with young children. These are not only women’s issues — they are family issues and national economic priorities. We know that when women succeed, America succeeds. The strength of our economy rests on whether we make it possible for every citizen to contribute to our growth and prosperity. As we honor the many patriots who have shaped not only the destinies of other women, but also the direction of our history, let us resolve to build on their efforts in our own time. As a Nation, we must join our voices with the chorus of history and push forward with unyielding faith to forge a more equal society for all our daughters and granddaughters — one where a woman’s potential is limited only by the size of her dreams and the power of her imagination. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2015 as Women’s History Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month and to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2015, with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. I also invite all Americans to visit www.WomensHistoryMonth.gov to learn more about the generations of women who have left enduring imprints on our history. Chairwoman and President On behalf of our Board of Directors, Greetings and Welcome to the Black Business Association (BBA) “Salute to Black Women Business Conference, Vendor Faire and Awards Luncheon.” This year's “Salute” holds historical significance for the BBA, the Women's History Movement and the National Women's History Project (NWHP). 2015 marks the 45th anniversary for the BBA and the 35th anniversary for NWHP; a combined eight decades of advocating for a just and level playing field for African Americans, Women and other minorities. This BBA congratulates NWHP, supports their mission and shares this year's theme, “Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives.” In that spirit the BBA presents you with an afternoon with empowering stories of African American women who have overcome the odds to realize their potential and tools to help you reach yours. This year's Business Conference continues our tradition of providing mentorship for women of all ages in navigating the current economic environment by offering workshops focusing on business & personal financial security, improvement, and empowerment. Take advantage of the Vendor Faire giving local businesses the opportunity to build their customer base and network with other vendors, and attendees. At the Awards Luncheon we honor women whose strength of character, dedication and sense of purpose are creating our history. These “Salute to Black Women” Honorees have continued the struggle for women's equality by demonstrating excellence in advancements ranging from achieving great success in the business world, breaking the glass ceiling in corporate America, to vast contributions in education, politics, science, community service, and entertainment. We are pleased you have joined us for this special event and welcome each of you to the “BBA 2015 Salute to Black Women Business Conference, Awards Luncheon & Vendor Faire”. March is a notable month for all women, and in particular, women of color, as we celebrate National Women's History Month. Today we extend congratulations to our esteemed “Honorees” in celebration of their outstanding contributions and achievements over the years. We recognize that to receive today's recognition; it takes dedication, perseverance, and the will to never give up or give in order to succeed. About the
Black Business Association Since 1970, the Black Business Association (BBA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, headquartered in Los Angeles, has championed thousands of African-American businesses. Nationally, the BBA has access and influence with more than 100,000 African-Americanowned and women/minority-owned firms via strategic alliances with W/MBE trade associations nationwide.
Our Mission The Black Business Association’s mission is to advocate and promote the development of African-American owned businesses with the goal of creating a firm economic base that support the self-determination and survival of the African-American and urban community by: C Identifying and creating financial opportunities for the growth and stability of African-American owned businesses; C Being a community voice that advocates for the success of small businesses; C Being a conduit for the merging of resources, values, profits, technology and people; C Promoting development and support of minority business enterprises within the domestic and international economies by encouraging and generating greater access to market opportunities and capital; C Providing training for entrepreneurial professional development; C Supporting and contributing to the economic base and progress of the AfricanAmerican community; and C Developing coalitions that support our political endeavors to effectively achieve public recognition and political influence for African-American business owners.
Advocacy The Black Business Association maintains very effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials for the support of African-American business development. Locally, statewide and in Washington, DC, we are constantly aware of pending legislation that might affect our member’s businesses, their growth and even their ability to conduct business. When legislation is being considered that affects our mission, the BBA quickly mobilizes to work with key policy makers to support, defeat or modify the bill and pursue the BBA position. As an organization, we are constantly at the helm, securing innovative means and policies that protect our constituency and their business interests.

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder, Branch of Christ Outreach Ministry (BCOM)
Dr. Gloria Zuurveen is a past Community-Based Business of the Year honoree as the Founder/Owner/ Publisher, of PACE NEWS since 1995. PACE NEWS, a Los Angeles county and city adjudicated newspaper of general circulation, which was started as a voice to call attention to the many critical issues, especially education, affecting the African American community in the Greater Los Angeles and surrounding areas, was featured recently on NBC4 Life Connected Black History series produced by Anchor General Assignment reporter Robert Kovacik. Dr. Zuurveen is the first African American woman appointed to the Los Angeles Press Club Board of Directors in its 100 years history where she serves as secretary. Dr. Zuurveen is a licensed ministered and founder of Branch of Christ Outreach Ministry (BCOM), an outreach ministry whose purpose is to halt biblical illiteracy among saints and unbelievers alike through its weekly Bible Literacy Training (BLT). Dr. Zuurveen is a member of Park Windsor Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Terrell Taylor. Dr. Zuurveen holds a Bachelor of Biblical Studies, a Master’s Degree in Religious Education and a Doctorate in Ministry all from the Ministerial Training Institute Bible College. Dr. Zuurveen has received numerous awards and recognition one of them being selected as the Black Business Association 2013 Community Based Business of the Year as well as the 2013 Small Business of the Year by California State Senator District #26, former Senator Curren D. Price, who now serves as Los Angeles City Councilman for the New 9th District. Dr. Zuurveen has also been selected to receive the Ida B. Wells Barnett Award on May 21, 2015 Los Angeles NAACP Roy Wilkins Freedom Fund Gala at the Biltmore Hotel. On this day, I too, salute and say congratulations to all the 2015 most deserving honorees and a special thanks to the Black Business Association (BBA) for allowing me the opportunity to have a role in this auspices occasion.

The Honorable Holly J. Mitchell California State Senator, 30th Senatorial District The Honorable Holly J. Mitchell has served in California's Legislature since 2011 and was elected in 2014 to represent the 30th Senate District, which includes the communities of Century City, Cheviot Hills, the Crenshaw District, Ladera Heights, Mid-City, Palms, USC, L.A. Live and the Fashion District in Downtown, Westmont, Culver City and portions of South Los Angeles and Inglewood. Policy efforts and legislative accomplishments include: 6 Expanded and protected access to contraception 6 Twice carried the bill to put a moratorium on “fracking” in California 6 Caylee's Law – parent/guardian must promptly report a missing child 6 Laws to prevent, prosecute and punish the sex trafficking of minors 6 Set same penalties for crack as for powder cocaine possession 6 “Health Homes” – alternative care services for frequent hospital ER users 6 Ongoing push to repeal CalWORKs' maximum family grant limit for poor families 6 “Hands on” UCLA training of foreign med grads in return for community service 6 “Mitchell Plan” helped secure 5% benefits increase for CA's poorest families Mitchell, known for a focus on reducing poverty, chairs Budget Subcommittee #3 on Health & Human Services and belongs to the Senate's official leadership as a member of its governing body, the Rules Committee, also serving on the Health, Insurance and Labor Committees. She founded the Senate Select Committee on Women and Inequality, and is a member of the Democratic, Black and Women's Caucuses. Mitchell previously represented the 47th and 54th Districts in the Assembly, where she also chaired the Budget Subcommittee on Health & Human Services, as well as the Select Committee on Foster Youth. Previously Mitchell was a field deputy in the Los Angeles district office of State Senator Diane Watson. As a policy analyst for the California Senate's Health and Human Services Committee she sought fiscally sound ways to expand vital services. As legislative advocate of the Western Center for Law and Poverty she helped develop the groundbreaking Healthy Families program, later serving as executive director of the Black Women's Health Project in Los Angeles. Mitchell's commitment to community service and social justice began in elementary school when she volunteered in a congressional campaign. That led to student activism and a Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs following her undergraduate studies at UC Riverside. As the chief executive officer of Crystal Stairs for seven years prior to taking public office she championed statewide family-focused policymaking. As the mother of a teenager, Holly Mitchell understands the concerns of working families and advocates legislative policy to meet their needs. She seeks to improve the quality and accessibility of the state's health and education systems. She focuses on job creation and balancing business, human and environmental needs to expand economic opportunity while protecting natural resources.

Felicia L. Hudson Director, Government & External Affairs, Verizon As Director of Government and External Affairs, Felicia is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, oversight of the Company's social responsibility efforts, and other strategic initiatives and programs. During her 13-year career with Verizon, Felicia has held positions within contract management, regulatory affairs and public policy. Felicia has been a strong corporate member of the Black Business Association (BBA) for over ten years in assisting the BBA in providing educational programs to the BBA and its members. In addition, she has served as a key liaison in linking BBA members to key resources in identifying procurement contract opportunities with Verizon. Her commitment and professionalism as a representative of Verizon is reflected throughout the minority business community as illustrated by her vast level of respect among all with whom she interfaces. Felicia is an active member of the community and serves on the board of directors of the Weingart Center for the Homeless, California Utilities Diversity Council and Asian Business Association of Orange County Corporate Advisory Board. Felicia earned a Bachelor's Degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Southwestern University School of Law. She lives in West Hills, California with her husband, Walter, and son, Nicholas.

Celestine Palmer Founder, LAAAWPAC/LAAAWPPI Celestine Palmer, Founder and President Emeritus of the Los Angeles African American Women Political Action Committee (LAAAWPAC); Founder of the Los Angeles African American Women's Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI); Co-Founder of the Women Building For The Future: The Future PAC; has a rich and diverse work background as a former educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), a former executive director of a non-profit organization (AbilityFirst); a former executive liaison to a bishop in the AME Church, and owner and CEO of Celestial Global Enterprises. Ms. Palmer is well known for both her political and her business acumen. She currently sits on the executive boards of LAAAWPAC, LAAAWPPI and The Future PAC; and is an Assembly District 54 Delegate to the CA Democratic Convention. Born in Texas, Ms. Palmer was educated locally; graduating from Dorsey High, earning her BA from CA State University, her MA from Chapman University, her Administrative Credentials from UCLA, and her Pupil Personnel Credentials from Pepperdine University. Employed by LAUSD as an Elementary Teacher, Reading Specialist, Pupil Services Attendance Counselor, and a District Student Expulsion Hearing Office; ever the activist, Palmer organized an after school program for high school seniors called the Youth Action League, where students learned about social issues, political action, and about local and state governmental structure through field trips and projects. Palmer retired after 33 years of dedicated service. Prior to her retirement from LAUSD, the private agency, AbilityFirst, recruited Ms. Palmer to serve as Executive Director of the Harry A. Mier Center for developmentally disabled, infants, and children. Palmer as business owner/operator of Celestial Global Enterprises, imported and exported many products from Africa and Europe. Palmer as the concert promoter for the popular recording group Kool & The Gang, got the group to sponsor a school attendance incentive program called, “It's Kool to Stay in School" as a creative way of motivating youth to “pay attention and stay in school.” Ms. Palmer became actively involved in the political process through her Los Angeles Teacher's Union (UTLA) when they elected her to the House of Representatives and delegate to conventions. She was also active with the New Frontier Democratic Club, serving as a Vice President of Fundraising. Inspired, she was then elected a Delegate to the CA Democratic Party, and went on to serve as the Vice Chair and Chairperson of the State Party's Women's Caucus. Noting the absence of African American Women leaders at the State Party level, Palmer was happy to see an African American woman elected to Chair the
California State Democratic Party, and another elected State Party Secretary. Palmer, while elected to the Los Angeles County Central Democratic Committee, chaired the 49th Assembly District Committee established and was the Administrator of a National Democratic Campaign Headquar ters for the Presidential campaign of Mondale/Ferraro. This Headquarters' operation, led by 2 women, was rewarded for its productivity and thus it was designated by the National Democratic Party as a regional headquarters for the DNC and coordinated the Presidential Candidates visits to Southern California. By late 1990, Palmer, aspired to increase voter and political participation rates among African American women, founded the first African American Women PAC; the Los Angeles African American Women Political Action Committee (LAAAWPAC). LAAAWPAC is committed to promoting candidates to public office and supporting issues which address the concerns of the African American community, by contributing financial resources and our collective voices for political impact. The only African American Women PAC, in California, is pleased to report direct responsibility for the elections of Congresswomen, U.S. Senators, State Assemblywomen and State Senators and local elected seats throughout the United States. During the tenth year celebration of LAAAWPAC, Palmer announced the launch of its 501(c)3; the Los Angeles African American Women's Public Policy Institute, (LAAAWPPI). The institute, a ten-week intensive training program for African American Women, was created as a separate, non partisan and non-profit 501(c)3 foundation. LAAAWPPI was created for the purpose of identifying and training future leaders in the Public Policy process, as leaders, candidates for office, campaign managers, consultants, fundraisers, activists and members of Boards and Commissions. Ms. Palmer received many honors from community leaders, groups and elected officials, including California Governor Gray Davis for exemplary leadership to advance diversity also an appointment to The California Seismic Safety Commission; U.S. President, Clinton; a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Betty Lamarr Founder/CEO, EmpowHer Institute Betty LaMarr, Author/Founder/Executive Director of EMPOWHER INSTITUTE, is passionate about serving others through coaching and mentoring. While living in South Africa, Betty saw the devastating effects poverty and powerlessness have on girls and women. She also saw what happens when girls and women are offered even modest opportunities for empowerment: Women discover independence; girls seek education and life changes for entire families and communities are positively altered as the cycle of poverty and dependency is broken. Inspired by her South Africa experience, Betty came back to the United States and founded EmpowHer Institute in 2003 with a mission to create self-driven success for low-income middle school girls to reduce the high school dropout rate of more than 50%. EmpowHer Institute's focus is on a holistic approach to transformation of the girl's character, self-worth and well-being. Betty earned a BA in Business Administration from California State University at Los Angeles, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. She is a featured author in books: Discover Your Inner Strength, The Heart of Women in Business, Million Dollar Conversations and Life Moments for Women. As an activist for change, the Mayor of Los Angeles and California's Lieutenant Governor honored Betty for outstanding community service as well as her contributions to a variety of youth organizations. Betty was most recently awarded Services to Youth Award by the Palos Verdes Chapter, Links, Inc. She has also received the Pepperdine Waves of Service Award to an alumna whose career demonstrates a life strengthened for “purpose, service and leadership� and she has been featured in various magazines, Black Enterprise and Origin Magazine, as examples.

Evelyn A. Reeves President/Ceo, First Security Investment Company, Inc. (FSICO) Chair of the Board, NAREB Foundation Evelyn Reeves embodies the very essence of what it means to be a powerhouse in business, a trusted leader in her community, a vital force within her profession, and an organizational trailblazer. Her many honors, recognitions and professional awards are testimony to her deep belief in excellence, perseverance, and goal-setting. Based in Los Angeles, CA, Ms. Reeves holds the distinction of growing the successful First Security Investment Company (FSICO) into a multi-faceted, full service real estate brokerage firm and being elected the first woman president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), recognized as the nation's oldest minority real estate trade association. She is a valued and trusted expert advisor to municipal, state and federally-appointed and elected officials on issues affecting real estate industry practices, housing and homeownership opportunities. Under Ms. Reeves' direction, FSICO offers its clients an array of real estate and investment services that include sales, acquisition, financing, new development and re-development project management now in excess of $50 million. In addition, FSICO currently manages more than 2,000 private sector apartments, and maintains fiduciary responsibility for personal asset and trusts totaling more than $12 million. Always a multi-tasker, Ms. Reeves attended California State University, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and at the same time, obtained a California Real Estate Certificate that served as her entry into the profession. Ms. Reeves subsequently earned her California Real Estate License in 1964 and her California Brokers License in 1966. Ms. Reeves complimented her ever-increasing business achievements with membership in the real estate industry's professional associations. Her evident organizational skills and grasp of key issues positioned Ms. Reeves as the overwhelming choice to occupy and serve in leadership positions. Although far too numerous to list, she has held leadership positions in NAREB at the chapter, state and national levels including President, Consolidated Realty Board of Southern California (CRB), Vice President and Board Member of the California Association of Real Estate Brokers (CAREB), first woman president of NAREB (1989-91) and the association's first woman board chair since the organization's founding in 1947. Currently, she serves at President of NAREB's Past President Advisory Board, and Chair of the NAREB Foundation. Honors and recognition of Ms. Reeves' service to her profession, her chosen affiliation with NAREB, and to her community are tangible indications of her professional achievement, business success, and dedication to her community's well-being. She includes among her wide-ranging honors: being named by former Congressman Edolphus Towns as the recipient of the Businesswoman and Pioneer Award; receiving a "Special Commendation" from the California State Senate; recognition by the Louisiana State Senate for "Remarkable Leadership as NAREB President"; gubernatorial appointee to the Real Estate Advisory Commission for the State of California; Educational Testing Service Advisory Committee Member; NID Technical Assistance Advisor for the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC); South Carolina House of Representatives Commendation, and Member, Washington Mutual Bank Community Board of Directors, to name just a few of her honors and appointments. Ms. Reeves' expertise and advocacy on behalf of equal housing opportunity has also been showcased and permanently captured in the Congressional Record when she testified before the U.S. House of Representatives during the proceedings of the 101st Congress.

Dijanna Figueroa, Ph.D. Marine Biologist Dr. Dijanna Figueroa is a marine scientist and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) education specialist. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Marine Biology from University of California, Los Angeles and a PhD in Marine Science from University of California, Santa Barbara. Her work as a deep sea marine scientist and educator has been featured in various science documentaries, nature programs, and publications. She is committed to inspiring young people of diverse backgrounds to embrace science and engineering. She recently served as Global Director of Green S.T.E.A.M. for National Geographic Society, MUSE School, and DeepSea America's cross country tour for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. As an advisory board member of various science and S.T.E.A.M. enrichment non-profits, her work is evident throughout the science education community. Her work with Make it Education brings hands-on science and engineering programs to students of all ages. She loves science and enjoys combining science with art and design to inspire young people to see the science in all things. She has over 10 years of experience teaching science, engineering in K-8 schools throughout greater Los Angeles. Her goal as an ambassador for science is to inspire and prepare all students for the science and technological discoveries of the future. When she is not teaching she enjoys traveling with her husband and three children.
