he featured article in this issue of the Black Business News Group’s Travel Africa encourages us to Go To Egypt, Now! And we concur. Egypt (Kemet) is within the borders of the continent of Africa. While many of the citizens are of Middle Eastern descent, the nation is African. The precious history that is Kemet is the history of Black Africans. Also join tours led by African American scholars like Ashra Kwesi (http://kemetnu.com), Professors Mario Beatty, Greg Carr, and Runoko Rashidi, among others. These knowledgeable educators provide their tour participants with the Black perspective on the history of that unsurpassed civilization. Take the advice. Go To Egypt, NOW! Then send your Kemet tour experience story to the Black Business News Travel Africa and maybe we will publish your tale. And thanks for reading our publication.

combined portfolio of Protea Hotels and current Marriott International brands would create a platform for accelerated growth and new job growth in South Africa and across the continent.” Alex Kyriakidis, president of Marriott International for the Middle East and Africa, said, “The development cycle for opening new hotels in Africa is typically long due to the challenges posed by emerging infrastructure, so joining forces with Protea Hotels and their highly respected management team is the strongest way to jumpstart Marriott’s footprint in Africa. The Marriott Middle East and Africa management team can deliver value and greater growth for Protea’s hotel owners by leveraging these terrific brands, represented by 116 hotels and more than 10,000 rooms in seven countries, with Marriott’s global sales, marketing and development infrastructure. We believe this would also result in more job creation in South Africa and across the continent.”

Planning Your Next Journey
E
very journey begins with a dream. TravelSmith offers some Planning Tips which we detail here and a Packing Checklist available on the website (www.travelsmith.com/packinglist)
Tip #1 - Watch Your Passport Always check the expiration date of your passport will ahead of an international departure. Increased security means long wait times for passports to be issued or renewed. Also keep in mind that many countries require a possport to be valid at least six months beyond your dates of stay. Airlines may also bar you from boarding the aircraft.
Tip #2 - Avoid Highseaon It’s no secret that high summer brings out the traveling masses and higher prices. If you have time on your side, schedule your trip for “shoulder season” the months between a destination’s high and low seasons. Besides avoiding the tourist crust, you’ll find bargins and still catch some great weather. The key to finding deals is timing and choice of destination. Autumn travelers can save 15-20% in many areas of the world. Consult guide books, hotel websites and travel websites for hints on prices and best value seasons.
Tip #3 - After You Land Cabs and rental cars are the most obvious solutions to get from the airport to your hotel - but they’re not always the most practical or economical. Do some advance scouting to find out the options. Shuttle Service: Check with your hotel to see if they offer airport or downtown shuttle service. It’s often free and convenient. Public Transportation: Check airport
websites. Most major airports around the world have excellent public transportation connections. In modern, high-density cities with chaotic traffic it’s actually recommended to take public transport. Private Car: Hiring a car and driver eliminates any mystery and lets you ride in style without lining up, hailing or haggling hassles. Airport and car rental websites often provide options for limos and private cars. Ground Link (www.groundlink.com) lets you summon a private car in may parts of the world for immediate pick-up or within the hour.
Tip #4 - Choose Luggage That’s Right for the Destination If you’ll be staying in one place for your entire trip or traveling first class, a standard suitcase if fine. However, if you plan to move around, less is more. Think about where you’re headed. You don’t want to get stuck trying to navigate through dense crowds of people with a heavy bag. You may have to carry your suitcase up stairs. If you are staying at a small inn or B&B, it probably won’t have an elevator. If you’re headed on safari or the high seas, soft bags fit best in tight spaces, car trunks, overhead racks, and train and ship luggage compartments. Rolling bags are invaluable in airports and whenever extended walking is required.
Tip #5 - Visas
require you to submit your passport as part of the application. For specific entry requirements, visit: travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/ cis/cis_4965.html..
Tip #6 - Consider a Home Swap If you own a home, consider a house exchange to save thousands in hotel bills. Organizations such as HomeExchange, HomeLink and Luxe Home Swap offer inspiring country, city and suburb properties in countries around the world. Instead of paying for a hotel, simply trade your house and even your card with a fellow traveler and live the life of a local while have a built-in housesitter back home.
Tip #7 - Some Credit Cards Travel Better Than Others About 90% of credit cards quietly assess a foreign transaction fee (usually 2-3%) on each purchase or transaction made abroad. Debit card ATM withdrawals often incur an extra charge as well. Do your research and find no-foreigntransaction-fee debit cards and credit cards.
Tip #8 - Pack Right the First Time Pack smarter for your next trip with our handy free packing guides. Out expert outfitters have taken the guesswork out of looking good on the go with selections of the best travel clothes, luggage and gear for men and women. From business travel to cruisewear, we’ve preselected the items you’ll need to back in your bag: www.travesmith. com/pakcing-guides.
Many countries do not require tourists to apply for visas, but you should always check the entry requirements of your destination in advance to ensure you www.TravelSmith.Com have ample time to apply. Some countries CALL US ANYTIME: 800-770-3387 21 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013

An Opinion: Go to Egypt. NOW! by Boykin Curry
E
GYPT – If you ever plan to see Egypt, go now. There are normally two ways to beat the crowds to a special spot. One is to get there first, before it shows up in all the travel magazines, but Egypt has been a popular destination since the early Greeks began visiting what were already ancient pyramids. Another is to go off-season, but Luxor is 110° in August. I propose a third way: Be brave. Skittish
tourists have abandoned Egypt, leaving the great monuments — normally crawling with people —

day. Far from evoking Ancient Evenings or Howard Carter’s age of discovery, modern excursions usually feel more like Disneyland at spring break. It is hard to take yourself to another era with fanny packs bumping you from all directions. But with tourism down 80%, your pharoanic or archeological fantasies are less likely to be interrupted today. This is perhaps your only opportunity to explore the tombs, the temples, and the Nile by yourself, to walk alone among the columns and to see a little of what people saw 4,000 years ago.
my wife Celerie and I never felt danger. Without being pollyannaish regarding the serious challenges that lie ahead, there is a nervous sense of excitement in Egypt and, for visitors, a chance to witness history up close. In the future, the moment will be lost. Either Egypt will collapse into chaos, rendering travel there foolhardy. In this case, the sites themselves may be threatened: Plundering is already evident from fresh holes in the sand. Or, more likely, in my view, the sense of danger will pass and the crowds will return. You will pay for your reluctance in the future as you stand in long, hot lines for a quick glimpse of an artifact over the shoulder of someone chattering
plans, and jump on the next flight to Cairo.
PLAN YOUR TRIP Itinerary If you are short on time, you can see a lot in a week. Spend a day in Cairo, three or four nights on a boat between Aswan and Luxor, and, if you have more time, explore the desert.
Where to Stay Instead of the floating hotel ships, consider the SS Sudan (www. steam-ship-sudan.com/en), the only remaining steamship on the Nile. Built in 1885, the Sudan was once King Farouk’s personal boat. Today, the dark wood panelling and the mismatched antique furniture is transporting. The good food and the small number of guests make it feel more like a dinner party than a cruise. In Luxor, Hotel Al Moudira is a designer’s take on an Egyptian palace.

Valley of the Kings Pharaohs of the Sedge & Bee
S
ituated on the ancient site of Thebes, on Luxor’s West Bank, the Valley of Kings is the ancient burial ground of many of Egypt’s New Kingdom rulers. A truly impressive site! There, you will find Tutankhamen’s tomb which was discovered almost intact in 1922 and the tomb of Ramses IV, among others. A ticket will allow you visiting 3 of the 63 tombs on site, except Tutankhamen’s tomb, which requires an additional ticket. Although the tomb alone is worth a visit, you will have to visit the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to see the treasures Tutankhamen was buried with.

Ulusaba, A Private Game Reserve
ULUSABA
S
ir Richard Branson’s Private Game Reserve is set in the heart of the Sabi Sand reserve on the border of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. At Ulusaba, we have set out to create the most beautiful game reserve in Africa. We have two lodges here at Ulusaba. One is perched high on the summit of a koppie and we call it Rock Lodge. Here you will find spectacular panoramic views over miles of Bush with the beauty of the lowveld below, all set against a backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain range far in the distance. Safari Lodge is built along the banks of the dry Mabrak riverbed. The rooms are built ‘tree house’ style and you really get the feeling of being in the heart of life in the Bush. Your room will provide fascinating views of the animals as they stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole. When you’re not out on game drive there are plenty of comfy spots in Safari Lodge where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere of the bush.
All Safari Lodge rooms are quiet and secluded, so take the chance to be at one with nature. Our bathtubs

very soggy. Squeeze the excess milk out and put to the side Add the mince to the onions and fry gently until cooked. Then add the curry powder, sultanas or raisins and apple and mix all the ingredients together Add the vinegar, 2 tablespoons of the chutney, bread, egg and the salt and pepper into the mince and cook for another 3 minutes over a gentle heat until the mixture thickens Put to the side and cool before wrapping with the spring roll pastry Make the sambals by thinly slicing the remaining onion, tomatoes and cucumber into equal sizes – about 5-6cm in length and sprinkle with salt and pepper When the bobotie mixture has cooled take one spring roll pastry sheet at a time and add a spoonful before rolling up like a cigar – just make sure the mixture is evenly spread and won’t escape during cooking Deep-fry the spring rolls when ready (or bake if you prefer) and serve with extra chutney and the fresh sambals Bobotie is a traditional South African mix of curried meat with fruit used in a variety of dishes. The origins can be traced back to some of the earlier European settlers in the country who brought back spices from the Dutch East Indies.

and plunge pools are strategically placed, so you can lie back and watch a different kind of world go by. Then, discover the Treehouse Suite – a 15 minute walk from Safari Lodge along swing bridges and an elevated walkway. It’s a great place to get up close and personal with the animals that come to bathe and cool down in the nearby dam. Back at the lodge, take a dip in the fresh water pool or scan the Bush for passing elephants and Bushbucks from the gym.
Alternatively try a relaxing massage in the Aroma Boma Spa. In the evening stargaze at the Bush Observatory. You’re on top of the world at Rock Lodge! Survey acres of game-rich Bush as you stand eight hundred feet above the wilderness. Watch the locals wandering by or wallowing in the watering hole. The view inside is just as spectacular. The granite rock of the koppie is a key feature of the main house’s design, and each room has the colours of a different African tribe. Each time you walk on to the deck off your room at Rock Lodge you’ll be reminded just how spectacular nature can be. This is 34 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013

World Travel Market: Interview with William El Kaim of Carlson Wagonlit Travel William is the Marketing Technology Director, Innovation Global Marketing and Enterprise Strategy, for Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT). His responsibilities include developing CWT’s position on “Managed Travel 2.0” and driving key areas such as digital marketing, web 2.0, mobile, social, advertising, big data, open API and xCommerce. YUDU (www.yudu.com) sat down with William ahead of World Travel Market and asked him some thoughts about the nature of e-tourism and its future in an increasingly mobile-led world. 1) In your opinion, what are the best examples of digital publishing in the travel industry? I have to admit this is an area where I believe there is still room for some real innovation. Looking outside the industry I would say that products like FlipBoard or Pinterest are more visually appealing than any digital travel publishing that we have in the industry at the moment. I think the idea of customisation is at the heart of future innovations, with consumers able to adapt and personalise their experience. At CWT (www.carlsonwagonlit. com/en), we are constantly looking at ways to innovate, and personalisation is something we expect to see more of in future. The use of gamification and realtime data are also some things we are looking to evolve further. 2) What do you envision for
the future of the travel industry? Business travel has changed dramatically over the last decade. In the past, business travel could be seen as regimented and fixed, but now we have to see each client journey as fluid. Every element of the journey is changeable and shifting. The information, the technology and the support we provide has to be as mobile and agile as the traveller. In the future, I believe travel will be shaped by the following key areas: 1) The economic growth of emerging countries in the next 10 years and their cohort of new travellers. The new Asian middle class will start travelling, domestically first, then outside their countries. Asian business travellers prefer face-to-face business and are also more likely to extend their stay for leisure (known as ‘Bleisure travel’), so it’s a major opportunity for the whole travel industry – both business and leisure. 2) Online booking will become the norm, with the only exceptions being some countries where internet access is not so readily available or the labour cost is lower than online. Transportation companies will continue to sell direct and try to own the customers’ journey, with low-cost airlines, intercity buses and trains benefiting the most from this trend. 3) Smartphones generate a 36 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013
constant stream of data, as they record what a user does and their habits and travellers should consider their mobile devices as an extension of their digital identity. 4) The wall between business travel and leisure will disappear. Consumers will ask for the same tool to do both. This is a huge evolution if you consider the current landscape. 5) Mobility management will become mainstream. The travel industry will have to offer an omni-channel and seamless door-to-door experience for travellers. The door-to-door search engine will offer multiple modes of transportation (air, train, bus, bike, and walk) for going from one place to another, along with time schedules and pricing. Once booked, door-todoor will become the overall trip control centre. 6) All future travellers will have see About e-Tourism on page 37
About e-Tourism
from page 36
to be supported 24/7 by human and virtual agents; failure to support could lead to complaints and brand damage on social networks. To increase customer satisfaction travel companies will have to invest in predictive analytics and anticipate their needs or trip disruptions. They will then need to collect data (with the consent of travellers) to be able to take care of them. This is a ‘Big Mother’ approach (and absolutely not a “Big Brother” one). 3) What they hope to see/ achieve at WTM this year? This is my first year at World Travel Market (www.wtmlondon. com), so I will mainly listen and learn in conferences, network, and look for innovations and future possible partners. 4) What do you think is the biggest enhancement/most transforming thing seen in the travel industry this year? Online access and the ability to compare travel choices, followed by the “sharing” capability. Anyone can create digital waves that will ripple all around the world. Look at TripAdvisor with reviews or Airbnb for renting.
5) How important is digital in the travel industry? Our world has changed and the digital revolution is forcing all business and brands to reinvent themselves to stop their business being disrupted. This is true for newspapers and the music industry, but also for the travel industry. We are now living in a world where reasonably new companies (less than 15 years old) such as Airbnb, TripAdvisor, and Google, and products like Apple’s iPhone are all affecting the industry, because they’re digital. In the travel industry, everything is digital (from e-tickets, to flight schedules, to in-flight entertainment) unlike the retail industry which has to manage physical stock. Demand is volatile (mainly season-based) and the offer is pervasive and growing every day, due to the lateral power of hundreds of people selling their own tour activity or renting their house or acting as a chauffeur with their own car. The travel industry is the perfect industry for “Software to eat the world’ (like Marc Andreessen said). As an industry we have an enormous advantage across all the others, and we should embrace that advantage
and share knowledge. 6) How are digital enhancements helping consumers? The volume of data we can capture or process with our brain is constantly increasing. Scientists recently found changes in the human brain, showing a beginning of evolution to cope with the data deluge. We are now part of a new species: the Homo Connecticus. Any business (travel or nontravel) should invest in processes, products and tools that digitalise, capture, aggregate, or curate data, and learn or invent how to generate value from each consumer. Digital will also enable a “mass customisation” approach where each consumer is individually segmented. Digital enhancements will also be more frequently offered through dedicated devices: watch, wrist, glasses, etc. 7) Any other thoughts or ideas you’d like to share? In the entrepreneurial age we live in, innovation takes only one form, which is that of a new and valued consumer offer in a mass market, through the development of a new business model and sustainable digital ecosystem. http://blog.yudu.com/2013/11/04/ world-travel-market-interviewwith-william-el-kaim-of-carlsonwagonlit-travel/

Proflight to Launch Lusaka-Dar Route
P
roflight Zambia (http://proflightzambia.com) is set to launch a three-times-a-week flight from Lusaka to Dares-Salaam in Tanzania. The new service to be launched on October 23, 2013 is the second international route for the Zambian airline, which started flying to Lilongwe in Malawi in June. Proflight Director of Government and Industry Affairs Philip Lemba said in a statement in Lusaka recently that Proflight was determined to ensure that Zambia becomes a regional aviation hub, enabling easy and convenient connections from its nine domestic destinations to cities throughout Southern Africa. “Dar-es-Salaam is the next step in a plan that we hope will see Proflight grow into the airline of choice throughout the region,” he said. Captain Lemba said flights would depart Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport at 08:00 hours on Mondays and Fridays, arriving at Dar-es-Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport at 12:20 hours, making it a journey of three hours and 20 minutes, given the one-hour time difference in Tanzania. The return flight would leave Dar-es-Salaam on the same days at 13:00 hours, arriving in Lusaka at 15:20 hours, enabling smooth connections on to Proflight’s afternoon flights to Mfuwe, Livingstone and Ndola. Captain Lemba said there would be a Wednesday flight, for which Proflight was awaiting confirmation
from regulators on the timing. An additional Lusaka- Dar-esSalaam flight would be operated on Thursday, October 24, to mark Independence Day. He said the Tanzanian capital of Dar-es-Salaam was an important seaport for regional trade and provided a gateway for Zambian traders importing goods among them, vehicles. The city was also the gateway for the exotic holiday location of Zanzibar. Capt Lemba said the new service would bring business and leisure passengers to Zambia, including traders wishing to do business, and tourists combining a beach holiday with a safari excursion. Proflight Zambia is also considering services to Harare, Tete and Johannesburg, subject to regulatory approval. In addition to the new route to Tanzania, which would be operated by the airline’s 29-seater Jet 40 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013
Stream 41 aircraft, Capt Lemba said Proflight would be increasing the frequency of its Lilongwe flights from three-times-a-week to four from November 16, to be operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Flights would leave Lusaka at 16:15 hours returning from Lilongwe at 18:25 hours on Monday, Thursday and Friday, while timing for the Wednesday flight was yet to be confirmed. He expressed hope that the airline would be able to provide smooth connections from Lusaka on to the Dar-es-Salaam service. With the introduction of the Tanzania route, Proflight Zambia will operate 11 scheduled routes using nine aircrafts, including a Boeing 737 aircraft which was recently added to the Proflight fleet as the airline’s first jet aircraft. http://ukzambians.co.uk/ home/2013/09/17/proflight-to-launchlusaka-dar-route

I’m Black and I Travel! …on the radar! Greg Gross @imblacknitravel
“Dreaming out loud — a pilgrimage of Africans” This is a blog entry from I’m Black and I Travel! Enjoy. Nigerian Christians make annual pilgrimages to the Holy Lands the way Muslims annually make the hajj to Mecca. What an experience it would be if black American Christians could join them in prayer.
B
eing totally addicted to travel, it’s probably fitting that even my mind likes to wander. Reading some recent stories on the Web about Eid al Fitr, the Muslim festival that celebrates the end of the month-long Ramadan fast, it struck me that Ramadan is now almost as well known among non-Muslims as the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. That, in turn, started me thinking about a Christian pilgrimage I’d recently learned about, a 1,000-year-old pilgrimage across northern Spain, what looks like a grueling but ultimately spiritually rewarding trek known as El Camino de Santiago — or in English, the Way of St. James. Then I began cruising the Internet for more information on Christian pilgrimages, and stumbled across this on allAfrica.com: “Ahead of this year’s Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem, President
G o o d l u c k Jonathan has approved two airlines for the airlift of intending pilgrims, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.” Come to find out that this is an annual tradition among Nigerian Christians, who travel by the thousands to both Israel and Rome. I’m only beginning to learn about this tradition, but I intend to learn more, a lot more, and soon. Meanwhile, however, that little tidbit got me thinking. I know there are black churches in the United States that have organized trips for worshipers to the Holy Land over the years. Have any of them ever hooked up with their Christian brothers and sisters in Nigeria, and worshiped together on the same pilgrimage? How’s this for a fantasy: Major black religious organizations link up with the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission and organize a joint pilgrimage. Black American Christians fly to the Holy Lands, where they meet, break bread and worship together with their Nigerian brothers and 47 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013
sisters, then maybe some days visiting Nigeria, and worshiping there, before returning home. Or do it in reverse, fly first to Lagos and connect with their fellow Nigerian Christians in Nigeria — and then accompany them to the Holy Lands. Think of it. Brothers and sisters from both sides of the African Diaspora, coming together in faith. Wouldn’t that be something? Maybe it could be done every three or four years, to give everyone time to prepare for the enormous
logistical challenges involved — not to mention giving the American worshipers a chances to save up the money needed for the journey. And I’m sure logistics probably would be the least of the challenges involved. Still…wouldn’t it be something? Uplifting. inspiring. Maybe even life-changing. I know, I’m just dreaming. But like I always say, small dreams are a waste of sleep. JetBlue and South African Airways Announce Bilateral Codeshare Seamless connections between the U.S.A., South Africa, and Senegal
J
etBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU), New York’s Hometown Airline(TM), and South African Airways (SAA) have announced a bilateral codeshare agreement to seamlessly connect the carriers’ networks via New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Washington’s Dulles International Airport (IAD). The agreement is pending U.S. DOT regulatory approval and subject to receipt of foreign government operating authority. The partnership – an expansion of an interline agreement first inked in 2010 – allows customers to purchase a single ticket combining SAAand JetBlue-operated flights and enjoy day-of-travel conveniences such as one-stop check-in and baggage transfer. JetBlue intends to place its “B6” code on South African Airwaysoperated
flights between the U.S. and both Johannesburg, South Africa, and Dakar, Senegal, as well as on connecting flights to select destinations beyond Johannesburg, including Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Tickets will be available for sale at a later date, pending regulatory and government approvals. The fastest way to more of South Africa and southern Africa, SAA flies nonstop each day between New York and Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport and daily between Washington and Johannesburg via Dakar’s Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport. SAA has had a similar arrangement in place with JetBlue since 2011, placing its “SA” code on JetBlue-operated flights from its U.S. gateways to top destinations including Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida. “We are excited to expand our successful relationship with South African Airways through this new codeshare via
Washington and JFK, where JetBlue is the number one domestic airline,” said Scott Laurence, JetBlue’s vice president of network planning and partnerships. “South African has been a terrific travel partner for JetBlue, consistently delivering a great experience for our customers. We look forward to working with 52 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013
them to offer even more travel options in the years to come.” “South African Airways’ partnership with JetBlue has been a successful one from the start, and so we’re pleased that it has now grown into a bilateral codeshare arrangement, providing our customers with even more convenient booking and travel options,” said Marc Cavaliere, SAA’s executive vice president, North America & Alliances. “Our customers have raved about the ease of travel on both airlines. It was only fitting that we expand the partnership and introduce the JetBlue code onto SAA flights and into the African continent.” South African Airways is one of the world’s most awarded airlines, recently named Best Airline in Africa for the 11th consecutive year at the World Airline Awards presented by Skytrax. A Few Recipes Botswanan Chicken Pie 12 Pies Ingredients For the filling 1/4 cup butter 3 1/2 ounces onions, sliced thinly 1 apple, peeled and diced 1 lb cooked chicken, chopped 2 teaspoons hot chili powder 1/2 cup currants 2 Tomatoes, diced salt, to taste 1 egg yolk whisked in 1 tbsp water For the dough 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 pinch baking soda
1 pinch salt 2 egg whites 1 egg yolk 1 cup butter or 1 cup margarine 1/4 cup cold water Directions 1 Fry the onions in the butter until translucent, then add the apple, chicken, currants and chili powder. 2 Cook for about a minute, then add the tomatoes and salt to taste. Keep cooking for another five minutes or so (the finished mixture should be pretty dry). 3 Meanwhile, make the dough. Sift the flour and baking soda together, then add the butter, working it with your fingers until you get a texture like fine breadcrumbs. 4 Now whisk the egg whites together with one egg yolk and add it to the dough. Add the water in small amounts until you get the right consistency for a pastry dough. Cut out circles about 6 inches wide or so. 5 Drop enough filling on each dough piece to cover about half the circle, with enough room left over to pinch the edges together. 6 Fold over to a half-moon shape. Repeat until you either run out of dough or filling. Prick each pie to vent. 7 Mix the remaining egg yolk with 1 tbsp of water and brush the surface of each pie. 8 Transfer to a well-oiled baking sheet (they stick, so make sure to use plenty of grease) and bake at see African Cuisine page 59

The presenters in the videos all do customerfacing work for their Department of Commerce agencies and, thus, are intimately familiar with the subject matter of each video. The 12 export training videos are available on the Web at www.census.gov/foreign-trade/aes/ exporttraining/videos. Each video runs about three or four minutes and can be viewed online or downloaded for off-line viewing. For additional sources of export counseling, contact the Trade Information Center at 1-800-USA-TRAD(E) (1-800-872-8723); www. export.gov.

ASSIST THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH SUDAN Sudan Sunrise Help Build Schools in the South Sundan www.sudansunrise.org
S
outh Sudan is the most underdeveloped region of the world today. 85% of the population in South Sudan is illiterate. Only about 7% of teachers in the south have any professional training, and it is not uncommon to visit a school where the teachers themselves have not been educated beyond fourth grade. Some 1.5 million children who should be in school are not, due to lack of schools. The majority of schools that do exist consist of a chalkboard under a tree. Read about the camapign and contribute to the program to build over 41 schools at www.sudansunrise.org.
Southern Sudan Literacy Project (SSLP) Build a Primary School • www.thehopealliance.org/?q=node/77
T
he Southern Sudan Literacy Project (SSLP) is designed to build a Primary school in Dongchak Payam, Duk County, Southern Sudan. Solomon Awan, who was one of the “Lost Boys from Sudan,” now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. He desires to help the village he is from, Duk Padiet. Villagers are just now returning after so many years of war and genocide. During the Spring of 2008, Solomon traveled back to his home village where he was reunited with his mother and sister. He met with the village community and agreed that the education of their children is the most critical need. We hope to finish building the school before the 2011 rainy season. To further this goal, SSLP has partnered with Hope Alliance, allowing our donors the benefit of a tax deduction. Please help SSLP accomplish this worthwhile project: send donations to The Hope Alliance (www.thehopealliance.org) For further information please contact: solomonawan@ yahoo.com. 64 | blackbusinessnews/TRAVEL | Fall 2013
