ENTS GUIDE TO THE AN AG

GOLDEN STATE

traveltrade.visitcalifornia.co.uk

WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA This guide is designed to help you learn more about California and to ensure that your customers get the most out of their holiday. We’ve filled it with helpful tips and advice, practical information and five themed itineraries for you to use as the basis for some amazing trips covering a variety of destinations and themes.

As I listened to the group share their experiences and great tales from the road, when we reunited on the last night in San Diego, I realised again how fortunate we are to have such a rich and diverse destination where anything is possible for those who Dream Big - and that’s the theme of our new advertising campaign that will launch in the UK on Boxing Day so watch this space!

In October Visit California hosted the 6th annual California Superfam in partnership with British Airways, giving 60 lucky agents the opportunity to road test these itineraries for themselves and discover just what it is that makes California such a special and popular destination for visitors. We’ll guide you through their incredible journey and let you know what they had to say about their adventures in the Golden State.

A fam trip is only made ‘Super’ by a great group of people and we’d like to thank all the agents, partners and hosts who made this possible. We hope you find this guide helpful and if you’d like to learn any more about California, visit our award-

The five itineraries were themed around Family, Culinary, Indulgence, Culture & Entertainment and the Outdoors. These themes allowed the agents to get up close to some of the icons we all know and love as well as some of the lesser-known aspects of the State, to get a real feel for the amazing things your clients can expect to experience on a visit here - anything from a picnic at Vikingsholm Castle in Lake Tahoe to an ‘Eat This, Shoot That’ food and photography tour in Santa Barbara. The Great Outdoors group even got to spend a night with the stars - sleeping out in the open air in Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Park thanks to a new partner for this year, Intrepid Travel. To cap it all off the agents got to experience British Airways’ new A380 on its inaugural ‘Red Carpet’ route between London and Los Angeles.

Culinary No other state in America is as closely associated with exceptional food and wine as the Golden State, a place that has even spawned its own style of cooking - “California Cuisine,” based on seasonal, ultrafresh ingredients, ethnic influences, and dynamic techniques. Sourcing locally is standard, with many chefs establishing personal relationships with nearby farms.

Dinner at La Jolla Tennis & Beach Club As the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, agents enjoyed welcome drinks and got to soak in the atmosphere of this beautiful Southern California beach. Afterwards, dinner was served, in true Californian style, on the beach, the sounds of the ocean serving as our backing track.

Presentations With all the SuperFAM agents coming together for dinner and drinks, each group was then asked to share their Californian journey and their experiences from the week. After this, our Superfam partners British Airways, Intrepid Travel and SIMON Shopping Destinations took to the stage to highlight new developments and activities.

After Party The finale finished off in style with drinks and dancing to a live DJ at the SuperFAM after party. Agents and destination representatives partied long into the night with conga-lines and stage-storming abound! After a long night, all agents were transferred back to their Mission Bay accommodation tired but happy after an amazing week in the Golden State.

THE LAST DAY All good things must come to an end… The state’s second-largest city, San Diego has the heart of an urban hub wrapped in history and blessed with almost perfect weather year-round. And if San Diego’s 70 miles of coastline and reliably sunny weather weren’t enough, the city is also home to museums, a world-renowned zoo, theme parks, famous golf courses, and a lively theater scene – as well as great food, shopping and nightlife in the historic downtown Gaslamp Quarter. You never forget you’re next to the sea here, with short sleeves worn nearly year-round. While in San Diego, make sure you make time to see: - Old Town San Diego Historic Park. Enjoy rustic shops and restaurants reflecting the region’s rich Mexican heritage. - Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego’s best place for nightlife, a 16-block National Historic District with restored 1860s buildings that house shops, clubs, and cafes. Adjacent to the quarter is ultra-modern Horton Plaza Shopping Centre. - New Children’s Museum in San Diego. This downtown attraction lets kids—and their imaginations—run wild, with hands-on exhibits promoting creative learning. - Maritime Museum of San Diego and U.S.S. Midway. This maritime museum has one of the world’s finest collections of historic ships, including the world’s oldest active ship, Star of India. Just south floats the anchored the U.S.S. Midway, a retired aircraft carrier now open for touring. - Coronado Island. Across a handsome bridge lies this relaxed community, perfect for cycling or hanging out at family-friendly Coronado Beach. This is home to the iconic Hotel del Coronado, where Marilyn Monroe shimmied in 1959’s unforgettable ‘Some Like It Hot.’
