Livestock Judging Awards & Scholarships
Cory Lowderman Freshman Challenge Scholarship ……………………………………………………….. TBA This award was established by the 1990-1991 BHE Livestock Judging Team and is awarded annually in memory of Cory Lowderman (2000). This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed one year of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points throughout all competitions their freshmen year. Cory believed in challenging others to be their very best.
Denzer Memorial Award …………………………………………………………………………………………………... TBA This award was established by the 1999-2000 BHE Livestock Judging Team. It is presented in memory of Norma Denzer (1999) and Adam Denzer (2008). This award is given to the outstanding sophomore livestock judging student who has completed two years in the Livestock Judging Program at Black Hawk College East Campus. This award is presented annually to a student who has exemplified an extra effort of achieving excellence in the participation of livestock judging-related activities. This award is not based on points, but rather on attitude and always thinking of others before themselves. The Denzer Family of Bloomington, IL, has been a very important part of the development of the livestock judging tradition and culture at BHE.
Ken Urban Memorial Award ……………………………………………………………………………………………... TBA This award was established in memory of Ken Urban who was a Duroc swine breeding pioneer from Prophetstown, IL. Ken helped the Livestock Judging Teams at BHE in the early years to excellence in swine judging not only in competitions, but more importantly in understanding how swine genetics impacts the next generation of offspring. This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed two years of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points in swine judging throughout all of the competitions of the year.
Denny Benoodt Memorial Award …………………………………………………………………………………….. TBA This award was established in memory of Denny Benoodt of Geneseo, IL, who was a famous beef cattle breeder. He played an important role in bringing the first Simmental breeding cattle to the United States. He helped the Livestock Judging Teams at BHE in the early years to excellence in beef judging not only in competitions, but more importantly in understanding how breeding beef genetics impacts the next generation of both show and sale beef cattle offspring. This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed two years of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points in beef judging throughout all of the competitions of the year.
Gwen Peterson Memorial Award …………………………………………………………………………………….. TBA This award was established in memory of Gwen Peterson of Kewanee, IL, an outstanding 4-H leader for many years in Henry County. She and her husband Stan are known to us as our “College Sheep Farm.” They have provided sheep judging classes for our Livestock Judging Team for over 30 years. This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed two years of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points in sheep judging throughout all of the competitions of the year.
Elmer Hoge Memorial/Mid-Continent Scholarship ……………………………………………... TBA This award was established in memory of Elmer Hoge by the 1979-1980 BHE Livestock Judging Team. Elmer was a true stockman, having established very prominent and successful Duroc breeding swine and Hereford cattle herds. Years later, the Hugh Miller family further endowed this scholarship in representing many years of the Mid-Continent Livestock Stock Show and Judging Contest and the participation of Black Hawk College. This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed two years of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points in livestock judging throughout all of the competitions of the year.
BHE Livestock Judging Reasons Award ……………………………………………………………. TBA This award is given to the outstanding agriculture student who has completed two years of competition on the Livestock Judging Team. The award is presented annually to a student who has the highest combined points in Oral Reasons throughout all of the competitions of the year. 12

Horse Judging Awards & Scholarships Susan Shipp Memorial Scholarship (Freshmen Horse Judging) ……………………………………………. TBA This award is given in memory of Susan, a transfer student who lost her life in a car accident while a student at BHE in November 1994. It is awarded to a member of the Freshmen Horse Judging Team. The selection is based on contest results, an essay about their personal characteristics and first semester GPA.
Pard’s Western Store Work Horse Award (Sophomore Horse Judging) …………………………………. TBA Each year Pard’s Western store presents a gift certificate to the sophomore horse judge who competed on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals for themselves and the team; stayed very coachable until the end and added value to the team by motivating others and staying a team player. They always tried hard and finished strong, but not necessarily finished first. The recipient also plans to continue their education and judge at a four-year institution.
Robert & Jean Wolf Memorial Scholarship (Sophomore Horse Judging) …………………………...... TBA In Fall 2002, Jon Wolf, founder of the equine program, suffered the loss of both parents, Robert and Jean Wolf of Polo, during the month of September. They were of vital support in the beginning of the program and remained so to the end. Both parents are so reflected in the personality and dedication of Jon. This award will be given to a sophomore horse judge who competed on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals and made major progress in their placing of classes and oral reasons; stayed very coachable until the end, trying hard and finishing strong. This award goes to the sophomore who accumulates the most contest points in fall competition.
