Katie Adams Davenport, IA Hi! My name is Kaitlyn Adams, but I prefer to go by Katie. I am from Davenport, IA. I am a barn worker and I am also on the IHSA Western Equestrian Team here at Black Hawk College. One of my most memorable moments here was loping for the first time my freshman year. My second most memorable moment was showing in the Beginner Western Horsemanship class for the first time. I placed fourth out of eight people. I did my internship here at Black Hawk College. I worked for our awesome barn manager, Heather Hochstatter. I cleaned stalls, swept the barn and did everything Heather told me to do. My favorite school horse is a mare named Candy. Candy is one of Heather’s reining mares.
Emily Barbknecht Waseca, MN I grew up on a family farm located in south central Minnesota. Growing up around livestock, I always knew I wanted to go into a career involving animal care. It was not until I was 12 when I got my first horse and the following summer started to show in some Western pleasure classes through our local saddle club that my passion grew. Currently, I am enrolled in the equine program at Black Hawk College and on track to graduate in the spring with Associate in Applied Science degrees in Equestrian Science and Horse Science Technology. Last spring for my first internship I worked for a cutting trainer in Los Banos, CA. I helped work the show horses in the morning and spent the afternoons in the round pen working colts. This was a great opportunity that pushed me to become a more confident rider and made me a better problem solver. Although I have enjoyed my time at Black Hawk College, after graduation I will take on another internship and I am looking forward to furthering my education through hands-on experience.
Teresa Brun Edmore, MI At a young age I fell in love with horses. I am from a small town called Edmore, MI. Currently I am a sophomore in the equine program at Black Hawk College. When I came into the equine program, I didn’t know much about horses other than how to sit on their backs and make them go forward. When I came to Black Hawk College, I got involved in the Horse Judging Team, the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and the IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. I was also able to work with the knowledgeable instructors to expand my knowledge and abilities with all types of horses. I spent my summer working for Equine Unlimited, located in Whitesboro, TX. I worked for two trainers, an all-around trainer and a reining trainer. I was able to see the work and determination it takes to run a professional training facility. One of my biggest accomplishments was being chosen to travel to Ocala, FL, to compete as a team rider for the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Semifinals in the Beginner division. Some of my favorite equestrian classes are reining, horsemanship and equitation. These classes have taught me strength, patience and confidence. The past two years at Black Hawk College have taught me hard work and focus will bring success. Although I am unsure about what my next step in life will be, I know horses will always be a big part of my life. I hope to carry on the legacy and continue being a lifelong learner.
Caitlynn Marit Trivoli, IL I am from Trivoli, IL, and am finishing my third year as a student in the Black Hawk College Equine Program. I will graduate in the spring with two Associate in Applied Science degrees, one in Equestrian Science and the other in Horse Science Technology. I experienced my first internship last spring in Green Cove Springs, FL, at Hawn Stables where I assisted in the training of ranch horses. My favorite school horse would have to be Henry, because he came from my internship and I have seen him make tremendous progress. It is very rewarding to see him teach students. One of my most memorable and biggest accomplishments while in the equine program was in Spring 2019. I competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association Regionals and placed as the Regional Champion in the Intermediate division. After that, I traveled to Ocala, FL, to compete at the IHSA Semifinals. At Black Hawk College, I have had the opportunity to become the showman that, otherwise, I would not have had the opportunity to become since I did not grow up in a “horse show family.” The growth in myself, my horse and my abilities in the arena would not be where they are today without the constant inspiration and encouragement from the supportive coaches and instructors.
Anna Marolf Milan, IL Hi, I am Anna Marolf and I am a sophomore in the equine program here at Black Hawk College. I am originally from Milan, IL. After graduation this May, I intend to come back to Black Hawk for the Veterinary Technology Program. I was blessed this past spring and summer to have an amazing internship with Diedrich Barrel Horses. I was able to ride extremely talented horses and learn from one of the best trainers around. While at Black Hawk, I have been an active member on both the IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team and IHSA Western Equestrian Team and have qualified for Regionals in both events as well as being a member of the Agribusiness Club.
McKenna Nye Harrisville, MI I am a sophomore at Black Hawk College where I study equestrian science. I recently completed an internship in Epping, ND, on a performance and reining horse farm where I started colts, helped with the breeding and foaling, and warmed up horses for my boss to ride. I come from a draft horse background in Harrisville, MI. My family and I show top-quality Clydesdales. We compete all over the world. In 2018, I was named World Champion Youth Driver Team and World Champion Youth Decorator. I was also Reserve World Champion in Youth Driver Cart. After graduation, my plan is to accept a job with the Budweiser Clydesdales West Coast hitch and travel the world participating in parades and exhibitions. Black Hawk College has allowed me to meet so many people who have been a huge impact on my life.
Sophie Otto Gridley, IL I am from the small town of Gridley, IL, where I grew up on a farm that nourished my love for animals, specifically horses. From an early age, I knew I wanted to train horses for a living, which eventually led me to Black Hawk College. Currently, I am pursuing Associate in Applied Science degrees in Equestrian Science as well as Horse Science Technology. Here at Black Hawk College, I have been provided with many opportunities to become an educated and wellrounded horseman. I am a successful member of the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and the Horse Judging Team. The staff and coaches here at Black Hawk have taught me and pushed me farther than I could have imagined. This past summer I was given the opportunity to intern for cutting horse trainer Gary Gonsalves in Millsap, TX. While interning, I learned the ins-and-outs of how to operate a successful horse training business. The most exciting opportunity that Black Hawk College has given me, though, is the Colt Training class. I love being able to shape young horses’ minds and learn from each and every one of them. After graduation, I intend to start my own business colt starting and restarting horses, as well as attend horseshoeing school.
Carley Piper New London, WI Carley Piper is from New London, WI, and is studying equestrian science to obtain her Associate in Applied Science degree. She is a member of the IHSA Western Equestrian Team, IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team and Horse Judging Team. As an equestrian of 17 years, she has accomplished goals of competing in two Extreme Mustang Makeovers, earning Top 10 finalist spots at both, competing at the Wisconsin State 4-H Champions Challenge where she was named the High Point Champion in the over fences division, as well as starting multiple colts of her own. Her plans include operating her own tack shop that crafts well-made, soft, supple tack. Her most memorable moment as a student at Black Hawk College was winning her over fences class in her first show as a member of the Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. Her favorite horse in the equine program is Goldie, a dun mare that she rode and cared for during her first semester as a Black Hawk College equestrian science student.
Kristi Puckett Springport, IN I started riding horses at the age of 7. I did 4-H until my senior year of high school. I did not realize how large the equine industry was, or how very competitive associations existed, until I went to Black Hawk College. At Black Hawk, I am on the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and got the experience to show in the horsemanship as an intermediate rider. I have a double major in Equestrian Science and Horse Science Technology. During my freshman internship, I got to show and work with Brock and Britney Reinebach at B&B Reinebach. I showed in the reining and the ranch riding. If I had to pick my favorite disciplines, I would pick all the ranchy events, like the reining and the ranch riding, but overall, I enjoy all different styles of riding. The most memorable moments at Black Hawk College would have to be meeting new people and making new friends. My favorite classes that I have taken would be the Horse Equipment & Facilities, Colt Training and Performance Horse Training. My favorite school horse is Nina because she was always willing, and I love riding the reining horses. I was able to use her for my ranch riding final and was able to learn a lot more from a reining training standpoint. After graduation, I plan to move to Texas to work for a reining trainer and be an assistant horse trainer. Then, hopefully be the best trainer I can be.
Maddie Schuldt St. Charles, IL I am from St. Charles, IL, studying equine science to get Associate in Applied Science degrees in Equestrian Science and Horse Science Technology. Along with my studies, I am also on the Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. I grew up riding mostly English but as I got older, I started training in other disciplines as well to become a more versatile rider. With 14 years of riding experience, I have had lots of accomplishments. I won the hunter derby at my barn summer show series, I helped with a mustang makeover as well as started many colts for Anderson Equestrian as an assistant trainer. Being an equine student at Black Hawk College, I have been able to ride many different horses here. My favorite horse I have been able to work with has been Survivor. Technically he is not a school horse, but one of the professor’s horses. Survivor is a sorrel horse with a lot of personality. Being able to ride Survivor in my horsemanship class taught me a lot as a rider. Taking the horsemanship class allowed me to explore many different styles of Western riding and introduced me to cutting. After this year, I hope to go out to Cody, WY, and work under a cutting trainer to advance my knowledge in the cow horse industry.
Taylor Trone Lewistown, IL Hello, my name is Taylor Trone and I am 21 years old. I am from Lewistown, IL, and I am a sophomore here at Black Hawk College. Growing up I showed in 4-H, open shows and in the AQYHA in the novice and youth division all-around events. I also showed APHYA youth halter mares and competed in speed and ranch riding events. As an amateur, I have shown mostly in the American Paint Horse Association and the Pinto Horse Association of America, where I have received multiple points in the all-around events. When I started showing, I showed Western pleasure Arabians, and after I stopped showing Arabians, I got more into the stock-type horses. Ever since then, I have been an enthusiast of the American Quarter Horse and American Paint Horse breeds. While at Black Hawk, I am a member of both the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team, an Academic All-American, a member of both the Agribusiness Club and Phi Theta Kappa. I qualified for Regionals in the Novice division for both English and Western. I am also the first male team member to qualify in Black Hawk College history for the Hunt Seat Equestrian Team! This was one of the biggest goals I wanted to accomplish during my time at Black Hawk. My favorite school horse is the Rock. My favorite class is Equitation Over Fences. I have so many great memories that have made the last two years at Black Hawk College an amazing experience!
Claire Urosevich Huntley, IL A big accomplishment of mine was the spring internship that was completed last year. I traveled to Sallisaw, OK, to a breeding farm. This opportunity taught me several topics. Dr. Mitchell was my supervisor and introduced me to new concepts every day, from checking mares to explaining how to make sure the mares were doing well when they were foaling. Each week, there were times when I was allowed to observe stallions getting collected. Live cover breeding was also practiced at this enterprise. Along with learning new things, I had tasks that had to get done. The responsibilities that were assigned to me were cleaning stalls, bringing in mares, checking on the mares and foals in the evenings, and going to the barn right away when a mare was having a foal. Valuable information was taught and learned throughout this internship. One of my favorite experiences at Black Hawk College was getting to ride my favorite school horse. His name is Jack. He is a red roan that loves his personal space, enjoys attention, and will work hard to please his rider. I have learned so much from this horse. One of the things Jack has taught me is how to remain confident when riding new patterns and how to work together through rough spots. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to ride this wonderful horse.
Michaela Weiss Wadesville, IN My name is Michaela Weiss and I am from Wadesville, IN. I am in the equestrian science program at Black Hawk College. My background includes barrel racing and the all-around events. I show in International Barrel Racing Association and open shows in my hometown. I interned at Slemp Performance Horses in Eugene, MO, last spring. At my internship I learned about reining maneuvers and breaking colts. Horse Health Care was my favorite class at Black Hawk because I learned about common horse health complications and how to address them. After Black Hawk, I plan to get a saddle fitting certification. My goals include owning and managing a boarding barn in my hometown, fitting saddles, and being a lesson instructor.
Nicole Welsh Milan, IL My parents raised me along with my four younger siblings in Milan, IL. I am a sophomore here at Black Hawk College, double majoring in Equestrian Science and Horse Science Technology. After I graduate this spring, I plan to stay for the Veterinary Technology Program. I am a part of the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team. Being on both of these teams has really pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me a better rider. My first internship was at a local training facility at Kat Zelnio Quarter Horses. Over my internship I learned so many new things. I got to ride some amazing hunter under saddle, equitation and Western pleasure horses. I mostly worked with 2- and 3-year-olds that only had about 30 to 60 days on them. I was also tasked with working with 2-year-olds that needed groundwork put on them before they were able to be broke out. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that have come my way while being here at Black Hawk College. I have met so many new people from many different states and have had an amazing experience.
Kami Woodard Norman, OK As a sophomore at Black Hawk College, I am currently on the IHSA Hunt Seat Equestrian Team, the IHSA Western Equestrian Team and the Horse Judging Team. My favorite class at Black Hawk was Colt Training, where I was able to bring my own colt from home. He has come a long way since the day I brought him. Now I am using the same horse in an advanced training class. During the summer following my freshman year, I was accepted as an intern at Bell Ranch in Tucumcari, NM. I spent eight weeks there and my main job was halter breaking colts. Along with that, I also helped move bulls on horseback, fix windmills and fences. After Black Hawk, I plan to transfer to a university closer to home where I can further my education, continue my passion for horse judging, and compete on another team.

Favorite Past BHC Memories Emily Barbknecht “One of my favorite memories from BHE this year was watching Aggie Olympics.
Favorite Past BHC Memories Teresa Brun “My favorite memory from Black Hawk would be at regionals this semester after I had qualified for semifinals, I had someone I didn’t know from a different team come up to me and tell me how good I did and how impressed she was with my ride. It was this moment not because someone told me I did a good job but because I knew the past two years off working myself harder then I thought possible, was all worth it. And I owe that to my coaches.”
Favorite Past BHC Memories Caitlynn Marit “My favorite memory as a student at BHE is while competing on the Equestrian Team in the spring of 2019. I needed 14 points in one weekend to qualify for regionals, which was difficult to do and I was not expecting to qualify. I was able to pull it off and get my points to qualify and show at the regional show the next day. I was the regional champion and went on to show at semifinals in Ocala, Florida. This was my favorite memory because I never thought I would be competitive enough to be successful, since I had never shown before the BHE Equestrian Team. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to be a member of this team.
Favorite Past BHC Memories McKenna Nye “My favorite memory over the last two years is the last day of colt breaking class. This is my favorite memory because I was so happy with how far I have come as well as the colt I had.
Favorite Past BHC Memories Sophia Otto “My favorite memory is being part of the judging team. Out of all the new things I have learned at Black Hawk, being on the horse judging team will stick with me the longest. It challenged me in ways I’ve never been challenged, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and gave me another family. I will always remember the bus ride to the AQHA World Show. Coach had us all write down a word about each other and then say it. No matter how long the trip was we always had fun together. No matter how well we did at a competition everyone encouraged each other and psyched each other up for the next competition. My favorite memory is being part of that team.”
Favorite Past BHC Memories Carley Piper “I have a lot of great memories at BHE and it was hard to pick just one as a favorite. But, the one memory that has really stuck with me is winning my first over fences class at my first hunt seat show as a team member. I remember all the hard work I put into my over fences riding and when it came time to show, I remember how strong my ride felt and how much I enjoyed showing that horse. It is definitely a great memory that I will cherish forever.
Favorite Past BHC Memories Kristen Puckett “My favorite memory from being at Black Hawk College is from my sophomore year with the show team when Rebekah Irish would let me have the privilege by helping warm up the reining horses for the show in Iowa Falls. I had such a great time supporting my team members, and being able to make sure our horses were ready to go for the show!“
Favorite Past BHC Memories Taylor Trone “I have two favorite memories from Black Hawk College. The first is when I placed 2nd at Western regionals. The second favorite memory is when Instructor, Sarah Schobert, yelled at all of us to be quiet and put our seatbelts on the way home from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, when she thought she was being pulled over by a police officer!
Favorite Past BHC Memories Claire Urosevich “One of my favorite memories from the past two years was our discussion when you were helping me find an internship freshman year. You had asked me if I wanted to travel or not and what I was looking to learn on internship. I had said I’d prefer to stay local. After we talked for a bit, you said you had the right place. You said you had a veterinarian contact at a breeding farm out in Oklahoma. I remember feeling terrified and thinking you can’t expect me to go all the way out to Oklahoma especially after I said that I wanted to stay local. You asked me to just think about it, contact Dr. Mitchell and be open to the idea of it. After much encouragement, I said ok. I’ll try it. I’m so glad you persuaded me to go out to Oklahoma because working with Dr. Mitchell at that breeding farm was a once in a lifetime experience, and I loved it! I got to see and meet many people and experience a whole different part of the country. Thank you for pushing me out of my comfort zone!”
Favorite Past BHC Memories Michaela Weiss “My favorite memory from the last two years is doing a flying lead change with Retro in Show Horse Training. It was my main goal for us while we were at Black Hawk because he had never done one before. It was amazing to see his progress in that class. Starting with leg yields at the walk and building on that really helped me with my training perspective. To accomplish something great, like a flying lead change, you have to start at the bottom with the basics and work your way up. I really enjoyed making progress with him and I feel like I got more accomplished with him in those eight weeks of Show Horse Training than I have in the past two and half years that I’ve owned him. I am so thankful for my time at Black Hawk and everything the professors taught me and I can’t wait to put my new skills to good use at home.”
Favorite Past BHC Memories Nicole Welsh “My favorite memory in the last 2 years was when the Hunt Seat Team traveled to Carbondale, IL and I won Reserve Grand Champion Rider. That was a huge accomplishment for me and really meant a lot. I love riding Hunt Seat and I felt that I worked really hard and it paid off. It also made me feel really special because my teammates and coach Schobert were really proud of me. It was also special because it was my first time jumping IHSA at a show and I had won both the jumping and flat class.
Favorite Past BHC Memories Kamryn Woodard “Although I have many favorite memories from my two years of being at Black Hawk one that stands out to me is the Christmas horse show right before break. Everyone had their horses looking so good and I stepped out of my comfort zone and ran the barrels on Armani. I Just remember everyone yelling and laughing and having a great time.“
