On behalf of the more than 3,300 Firefighters, Paramedics, Dispatchers, Pilots, and Inspectors of United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, Local 112, it is my honor to present the 2016 Los Angeles Fire Department Year in Review Photo Book. This publication offers a small glimpse into the lives of our dedicated members who protect lives and save property in Los Angeles 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2016, our Firefighters and Paramedics received over 481,000 calls for service throughout Los Angeles, responding to an average of more than 1,300 emergencies a day. To put this in perspective, a Fire Department resource responds to an incident somewhere in our City every 34 seconds. This is an incredible mission and no one accepts this challenge and answers the call of duty more courageously than our Los Angeles City Firefighters. This past year marked a time of restoration and rebuilding in our Department as we welcomed 229 new Firefighters into our ranks and returned resources to our community fire stations that were previously cut during the economic downturn. We extend our gratitude to Mayor Eric Garcetti, the City Council, and the Fire Commission for making the LAFD a top priority and we thank Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas for advocating on behalf of our men and women in the field. UFLAC is proud to be a partner in this effort. This book is dedicated to our rank and file members who risk their lives to save others. As a 29-year veteran of the LAFD, it is truly my honor to be a Los Angeles City Firefighter and to represent the fine men and women of the greatest Fire Department in the nation.

2016 STATISTICS The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is a full service fire and rescue agency that serves over four million people in the City of Los Angeles. The mission of the LAFD is to preserve life and property, promote public safety, and foster economic growth through a commitment to prevention, preparedness, response and recovery as an all-risk life safety response provider. The proud men and women of the LAFD call 106 Fire Stations spread across a 474 square-mile jurisdiction home. These neighborhood fire stations are staffed by 3,373 sworn Firefighters on three rotating shifts who respond to an average of more than 1,300 emergency calls for service on a daily basis. In 2016, the LAFD held five graduation ceremonies from the Drill Tower Academies in which 229 new Firefighters joined the ranks. Moreover, during the same calendar year, 211 sworn personnel retired, so the hiring of new Firefighters is barely keeping up with attrition rates. Budget cuts during the recession forced the LAFD to slowdown the hiring process and during that period, hundreds of Firefighters retired and were not replaced. Fortunately, in 2015, the Los Angeles City Council, along with the Mayor, began to restore and rebuild the Department, placing a priority on the necessary staffing for the LAFD.

VALLEY GLEN - Firefighters rushed to the scene of a house fire that started in the garage in the 12300 block of Sylvan Street. The blaze quickly moved to the main portion of the house and caused significant damage to the structure. Thankfully, Firefighters were able to contain the blaze without it affecting nearby homes and the residents were able to escape unharmed.

HOUSE FIRE DISPLACES RESIDENTS January 4

GRANADA HILLS - Just after 6:00am, approximately 41 Firefighters were called to the 16000 block of Tribune Street where they fought a blaze in an upstairs bedroom fireplace. Due to the quick action of Firefighters, the fire was knocked down in 25 minutes and the 48-year old structure was saved from further damage. Unfortunately, the residents were displaced as a result of extensive damage to the home.

NORTH HILLS - Firefighters arrived to the 15900 block of West Gresham Street to find a house fully ablaze in a residential neighborhood. Thankfully, all eight occupants in the home were able to escape while paramedics tended to a 15-year old victim who had suffered minor burns. The fire was knocked down in 21 minutes and the eight residents were displaced as a result of the blaze. Sadly, a dog that was in the home succumbed to its injuries and the boy was rushed to an area hospital in fair condition.

HOUSE FIRE DISPLACES SEVEN January 17

SOUTH LOS ANGELES - Shortly after 10:00am, Firefighters arrived to the 600 block of East 115th Street where they encountered a one-story house engulfed with flames and smoke. 32 Firefighters extinguished the fire in 23 minutes. Thankfully, all seven residents escaped and only one person was treated for minor smoke inhalation. The home suffered significant damage and all of the occupants were displaced. Firefighters gave the family a $100 prepaid credit card known as a SAVE (Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency) Card to provide immediate assistance so they could purchase basic necessities such as food, clothing, or medicine.

LA TUNA CANYON - Just after 9:00am, Firefighters responded to a vehicle collision in the 9000 block of La Tuna Canyon in the Shadow Hills community. It was determined that the vehicle had crashed into the storm drain where they found one person dead at the scene.

STRIP MALL FIRE January 22

BOYLE HEIGHTS - Approximately 75 Firefighters responded to large fire at a Boyle Heights strip mall where a faรงade collapsed in the early morning hours. The fire started at around 1:47am in the 2100 block of East Whittier Boulevard and damaged several businesses that occupied the strip mall. Due to the severe damage of the structure, fire crews fought the blaze from a defensive posture and pulled everyone out of the building approximately 10 minutes before the faรงade fell to the ground. Thankfully, the fire was contained after nearly an hour and no injuries were reported.

INDUSTRIAL FIRE AT COMMERCIAL BUILDING February 1 GLASSELL PARK - Around 5:00am, more than 140 Firefighters responded to an industrial fire in the 3000 block of North Fierro Street where they found a massive inferno burning at a large industrial commercial park. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours as they contended with 25mph winds that threatened nearby structures. Three structures on the property were damaged and Arson Investigators were brought to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

LAFD CLASS 2015-2 GRADUATION February 4

TERMINAL ISLAND - The LAFD celebrated 45 recruits graduating from the rigorous 20-week training academy at a ceremony at the Harbor Recruit Training Academy. The Academyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose is to prepare recruits for a successful career with the LAFD. The graduation ceremony was followed by a skills demonstration from members of the class.

DOWNTOWN - Approximately 100 Firefighters fought a major structure fire at a one-story commercial building built in 1933 in the 1100 block of Los Angeles Street at around 1:00am. Firefighters extinguished the flames in one hour and five minutes and thanks to the outstanding efforts of the crews on scene, the blaze was contained to the original building and no injuries were reported. The building was yellow-tagged due to extensive damage to the rear of the structure. OnScene.TV

BOYLE HEIGHTS - A driver fleeing a gunman careened into a single-family home around 11:00am. The driver and a pregnant female passenger were killed, while a third occupant was in fair condition. The home was knocked off its foundation, but fortunately the homeowner escaped without suffering any injuries.

RECYCLING YARD FIRE February 7 PACOIMA - Firefighters responded to a fire that broke out at a recycling yard in the 12200 block of Branford Street. The fire crews fully extinguished a large pile of combustible materials within 35 minutes and no injuries were reported.

INDUSTRIAL FIRE INJURES TWO FIREFIGHTERS February 9 DOWNTOWN LA - Firefighters responded to a major structure fire at a building in the 1300 block of Newton Street where two Firefighters were injured in separate falls. In total, 128 Firefighters attacked the blaze and were able to extinguish the flames in approximately 45 minutes. The two injured Firefighters were both able to walk to a waiting ambulance where they were treated at a local hospital and released.

HOUSE FIRE February 9 NORTH HOLLYWOOD - At 5:28pm, Firefighters arrived to the scene of a home on fire in the 6000 block of Morella Avenue. The fire was extinguished within 13 minutes due to the quick work of the Firefighters and a pet cat was safely reunited with its owners. Mike Meadows

MASSIVE FIRE AT VACANT MOTEL February 14 VAN NUYS - Just after 2:00pm, nearly 170 Firefighters responded to a major fire at a vacant two-story motel in the 6500 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard. Firefighters defensively fought the fire from the exterior due to gusting winds of 25mph and confined it to the premises. The fire was knocked down in just two hours and fifty-three minutes and no injuries were reported.

MOBILE HOME PARK ELECTRICAL FIRE February 14 VALLEY GLEN - Firefighters were called to a van fire in the 6300 block of Sunnyslope Avenue around 10:45am where an apparent electrical fire broke out in a mobile home park. Fire officials reported that a solar-powered trickle charger may have caused the blaze. Firefighters were able to quickly handle the fire, but not before four small dogs died from their injuries at the scene. Firefighters comforted the owner of the van and directed him to additional support services.

SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH February 17 ARLETA - An afternoon rainstorm that caused a traffic collision contributed to a separate, one-vehicle crash in the 13000 block of West Osbourne Street near Canterbury Avenue. According to police officers at the scene, a driver became distracted and slammed into a utility pole that knocked an electrical transformer loose and fell on the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s truck. Sadly, the driver was crushed and died from his injuries, while the two drivers involved in the initial crash were treated on the scene with minor injuries.

WORTHY OF LOVE February 25 DOWNTOWN LA - United Firefighters of Los Angeles City sponsored a birthday bash for homeless children in the Skid Row district of Los Angeles that was celebrated by over 100 family members and hosted by the nonprofit Worthy of Love. Fire Station 9 also took the time to visit the children and family members at the party to spread joy to the kids on Skid Row. Since January of 2013, Worthy of Love and its founder, Mary Davis, have lifted the spirits and hearts of the over 15,000 homeless children in Los Angeles County by hosting birthday parties for children in this poverty-stricken area each month. Since its inception in 2013, Worthy of Love has thrown a birthday party every month for the many families that experience homelessness on Skid Row. IAFF FIRE GROUND SURVIVAL TRAINING PROGRAM March 2 ELYSIAN PARK - Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas and United Firefighters of Los Angeles City President Frank Lima participated in the Fire Ground Survival Training Program by the International Association of Fire Fighters. This was the first time that a Fire Chief and Fire Union President participated in this program side-by-side. The purpose of the Fire Ground Survival Training Program is to ensure that training for Mayday prevention and Mayday operations are consistent between all Firefighters, Company Officers, and Chief Officers. Firefighter safety is paramount and statistics show that Firefighters becoming trapped and disoriented represent the largest portion of structural fire ground fatalities. Thanks to this program, Firefighters are trained to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disoriented, injured, are low on air, or trapped.

SEPULVEDA BASIN - Around 5:20am, LAFD ground and air crews were called to 6100 North Balboa Boulevard to rescue people stranded in the Los Angeles River. The swift-water rescue team initially saved two people who were in distress from waters that had risen due to heavy overnight rains and two others who were holding onto trees. By 6:40am, seven people and one dog had been rescued from the river from multiple sites along the waterway in the Sepulveda Basin.

MASSIVE FIRE AT ONESTORY COMMERCIAL BUILDING March 10 BOYLE HEIGHTS - Firefighters fought a Greater Alarm Fire at a 70,000 square-foot, single-story building located at 1566 South Rio Vista Avenue that was first reported at 7:45pm. Nearly 150 Firefighters arrived on the scene to find large flames and black smoke billowing from a commercial building. Crews extinguished the flames in 2 hours and 14 minutes and faced several obstacles, including a collapsed exterior wall and the threat of live power lines falling. ST. BALDRICK’S March 12 NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Members of the LAFD and the LAPD, along with hundreds of community supporters, gathered at Fire Station 89 for the 14th Annual St. Baldrick’s Day to shave their heads and raise money for childhood cancer research. The incredible event organized by LAFD Captain Danny Wu and LAPD Lieutenant Greg Doyle included a pancake breakfast, a blood drive, and face painting and toys for the children. In total, participants raised over $105,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-powered charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any charitable organization.

Firefighter of the Year: Captain JUAN ALBARRAN March 16 LOS ANGELES - Captain II Juan Albarran (FS 26-C) was named the 2015 Firefighter of the Year by the Los Angeles Firefighters Association. This distinct honor is given to a member who, not by any single act, has distinguished himself as one of outstanding character, dedication, and loyalty to the Department, the Fire Service, and the community. Captain Albarran, a 36-year veteran, spent most of his career at Fire Station 26, served as a Drill Master, and was President of the Los Angeles Firefighters Relief Association for two years. He is also a Trustee for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund. We salute Captain Juan Albarran for being named the Los Angeles Firefighters Association’s 2015 Firefighter of the Year!

COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FIRE STRIKES SOUTH LA & INJURES FIREFIGHTER March 17 SOUTH LA - At 5:57pm, Fire Crews arrived on scene to battle a structure fire in the 6600 block of South 8th Avenue that threatened two nearby homes. Thanks to the quick action of 55 Firefighters, the blaze that engulfed the aluminum structure was knocked down in 48 minutes and saved the two residences on either side of the structure. One Firefighter was transported to a local hospital with a leg injury.

HORSE RESCUE March 19 SYLMAR - LAFD Air Operations were called around 2:00pm to the area of Little Tujunga Canyon Road and Marek Motorway where a horse had fallen approximately 150 feet into a ravine. Firefighters were able to launch a hoist operation to bring the animal to safety at about 5:40pm. Mike Meadows

GARAGE FIRE March 23 VALLEY VILLAGE - Firefighters responded at 11:30pm to an electrical fire that ignited in a garage in the 5100 block of Whitsett Avenue. The home contained several television and movie props, including a robot from the TV show â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lost in Space,â&#x20AC;? that were all saved from destruction due to the quick and exceptional work of the Firefighters.

TRUCK FIRE March 24 PORTER RANCH - A fire broke out in a Dodge Ram pickup truck at 12:48pm that ignited brush on the 118 Freeway near Reseda Boulevard in Porter Ranch. The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes and no injuries were reported.

CHURCH FIRE March 28 SOUTH LA - Around 5:15am, Firefighters were called to a major structure fire in a two-story church building located at 8401 South Hoover Street in the Vermont Knolls area where it was reported that people were trapped inside. Approximately 125 Firefighters attacked the blaze while a search for occupants ensued. The roof collapsed under the intense flames and thankfully all of the Firefighters and people inside were able to escape without injury. GRASS FIRE April 3 NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Firefighters battled a heavy grass fire that ignited near the intersection of Bellaire Avenue and Hatteras Street. The fire covered two acres of a large lot behind a radio station on Burbank Boulevard. Fortunately, four companies were able to knock the fire down in 30 minutes with no injuries reported.

TRUCK FIRE April 4 NORTH HILLS - Firefighters arrived to the scene of a full-sized pickup truck consumed by flames in the 15600 block of Lemarsh Street. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and no injuries were reported.

There were 1,617 passenger vehicle fires in the City of Los Angeles in 2016, resulting in 5 civilian deaths, 3 injuries, and just under $11M in damages.

STRUCTURE FIRE SPREADS TO HOME April 6 GRANADA HILLS - At 11:09pm, Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 11232 North Woodley Avenue where they battled an outside fire that spread to an adjacent one-story, singlefamily dwelling. A team of 43 Firefighters was able to knockdown the blaze in approximately 24 minutes.

DEADLY HOUSE FIRE April 7 HYDE PARK - Firefighters arrived around 1:40am to the 4200 block of West 62nd Street to find a two-story home well involved with flames and people trapped inside the structure. 78 Firefighters took approximately 49 minutes to knockdown the blaze. An 80-year old man was able to jump from the roof of the home to escape the flames and was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Sadly, the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 80-year-old wife and 50-year-old son were unable to get out in time and succumbed to their injuries.

FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION April 17 NORTH HILLS - At 11:39am, more than 60 Firefighters rushed to the intersection of Haskell Avenue and Parthenia Street where a Toyota 4Runner truck and a Toyota Sienna minivan collided, leaving several people in critical condition. A woman allegedly fled the scene of an earlier traffic collision when she struck the minivan, causing a rollover where people were ejected from the vehicle. One of the four children injured in the crash was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, while the other three children were taken to Fire Station 114 and airlifted to pediatric trauma centers with significant injuries. One victim, the father of three children in the accident, was pronounced dead at an area hospital as a result of the crash. Mike Meadows

SALVAGE YARD FIRE April 17 SUN VALLEY - A fast-moving fire at an auto salvage yard located at 9128 Tujunga Avenue burned for more than two hours and damaged several junk vehicles. Shortly before 4:00pm, over 150 Firefighters battled the 1Â˝-acre blaze that was fanned by 5-10mph winds. The LAFD Hazardous Materials Team was on-hand to ensure that water runoff was safe for the public and fortunately, no surrounding structures were damaged or injuries reported due to the tremendous work by Fire Crews. PARAMEDIC FIRE ENGINE RESTORED April 20 SKID ROW - Fire Station 9, one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s busiest fire stations, added a Paramedic Fire Engine back into rotation to address a surging call load in the area. Fire Station 9, located on East 7th Street, saw its call load increase by 36% over two years from 12,835 incidents in 2013 to 17,434 incidents in 2015. Engine 209, which had been disbanded in July 2011 due to budget cuts during the economic downturn, was restored on a permanent 24-hour basis.

AUTO REPAIR BUSINESS FIRE April 24 NORTH HILLS - Firefighters were called to the 8400 block of Sepulveda Boulevard to fight a blaze that erupted at an auto repair business. At least two vehicles were reported on fire in separate service bays that took Firefighters 22 minutes to extinguish.

TRASH TRUCK FIRE April 26 NORTH HOLLYWOOD - An LA City trash truck caught on fire in the 6700 block of Laurelgrove Avenue due to a hydraulic system issue. Firefighters used rotary saws to open up the metal top of the truck in order to apply fire-retardant foam to the truckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plastic contents. Oxygen masks were used due to the heavy smoke and Firefighters contained the blaze in about an hour. Mike Meadows

11TH ANNUAL MDA FILL THE BOOT CAMPAIGN April 26-28 NORTH HILLS - The 11th Annual Fill the Boot Campaign that benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) raised over $116,000. For more than 60 years, the MDA and the IAFF have been partnering together to help conquer Muscular Dystrophy and other related lifethreatening diseases in kids and adults.

LAFD RECRUIT ACADEMY 2015-3 GRADUATION April 28 PANORAMA CITY - The LAFD graduated 48 recruits from the Valley Recruit Training Academy, including five women. During the ceremony, the new Firefighters demonstrated some of their skills that included rappelling down a building and extinguishing a vehicle fire. The graduation was the culmination of a rigorous 20-week training curriculum where recruits were tested on their physical and mental strength.

STRUCTURE FIRE DAMAGES MULTIPLE HOMES, DOG RESCUED April 29 KOREATOWN - A massive fire broke out at 11:49am in the 100 block of South Ardmore Avenue that quickly spread to nearby homes. Firefighters arrived to see a two-story Craftsman home well involved with flames and a collapsed roof. 98 Firefighters fought the blaze and achieved a full knockdown in 49 minutes. Fire Companies prevented any injuries and saved a small dog that was found in the backyard of one of the damaged homes. Thankfully, the dog was given a clean bill of health and crews prevented further damage to neighboring homes. The incident displaced 19 people and the LAFD provided SAVE Cards to the two families impacted by the fire. Matt Hartman

ECHO PARK HOUSE FIRE May 2 ECHO PARK - A fire broke out at 3:25pm in the 600 block of Echo Park Avenue where an unattended cigarette sparked a fire that seriously damaged a home and killed two cats. When the 86 Firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was well-involved in flames. With air support from an LAFD helicopter in windy conditions, crews extinguished the blaze in 25 minutes, but two residents of the home were displaced.

FIRE BLAZES AT VENICE BUSINESS May 7 VENICE - A fire was reported at the rear of a one-story medical marijuana business in the 400 block of South Lincoln Boulevard. Working in conjunction with Santa Monica Firefighters, the flames were contained to a 14â&#x20AC;&#x2122; x 20â&#x20AC;&#x2122; addition to the business and no injuries were reported.

FATAL APARTMENT BLAZE May 14 EAST HOLLYWOOD - A fire broke out in a two-story garden apartment shortly after 12:30pm in the 1500 block of North Hobart Street. A total of 32 Firefighters arrived on the scene to billowing smoke coming from a first-floor unit. Crews fully extinguished the flames in 11 minutes and prevented further damage to adjoining units. Sadly, a 73-year-old resident in the apartment was found unconscious and beyond medical help and was declared dead at the scene.

FIRE SERVICE RECOGNITION DAY May 14 Fire Stations from all over Los Angeles open their doors to the community on the second Saturday every May for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fire Service Recognition Day.â&#x20AC;? This day allows community members to meet and interact with their neighborhood Firefighters, familiarize themselves with the services offered by the LAFD, tour the stations, and learn about fire safety. All neighborhood locations honored special community members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in support of their local Firefighters.

ENGINE 69 RESTORED May 14 VENICE - Firefighters welcomed Engine 69 back into service at its Fire Station 69 home located at 15045 Sunset Blvd. on Fire Service Day. Engine 69 was taken out of service as a result of the devastating budget cuts back in 2009. After years of advocating for restoration of this critical resource to the Westside, UFLAC, the LAFD, and District 11 Councilmember Mike Bonin were proud to see this rig back in action. The return of Engine 69 will increase the number of Firefighters from six to ten in an area that is prone to brush fires, challenging topography, and limited access routes due to narrow roadways.

LAFD FOUNDATION HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA: FARENHEIT 2016 May 21 ELYSIAN PARK - For the past five years, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation has hosted its annual Fahrenheit Gala, which is the largest fundraising event of the year for the LAFD and includes demonstrations from LA Firefighter units, apparatus displays, and silent and live auctions. Community leaders, UFLAC members, Fire Department officers, and several elected officials, including Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Nury Martinez, were on-hand at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center to meet, interact with, and raise money for the proud Firefighters and Paramedics of the LAFD.

STUDIO CITY - A one-story home was damaged when a fire ripped through the structure in the 11200 block of Laurie Drive. Firefighters responded to the vacant home at 7:47am and extinguished the fire within 29 minutes of their arrival. Although the home suffered significant damage, no injuries were reported.

LAKE VIEW TERRACE - Around 2:20pm, Firefighters responded to a brush fire in the canyons near the 11300 block of Wheatland Avenue above Lake View Terrace. The fire rapidly spread from less than 10 acres to more than 100 acres. Helicopter crews battled the fire from above, while over 100 Firefighters on the ground worked with personnel from the U.S. Forest Service to contain the blaze as the fire moved into the Angeles National Forest. In total, 184 acres were burned and full containment was achieved after four days.

DOWNTOWN LA - Fire Stations and businesses from throughout Los Angeles came together at Hope Street and 3rd Street in the Financial District to raise money in support of the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association’s Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund. During this lunchtime event, more than 20 sponsored teams prepared special meals and desserts where winners were judged in a variety of categories such as best food, best dessert, and best themed booth.

CALABASAS & WEST HILLS - Hot and dry conditions sparked a series of wildfires in and around West Hills and Calabasas neighborhoods. The West Hills fire was first reported at around 4:20pm near a ravine at Kittridge Street and Valley Circle at the same time as air and ground crews helped fight another brush fire that was raging over 500 acres in the Calabasas area that led to the mandatory evacuation of 3,000 homes. Winds pushed the West Hills fire to over two-acres, but crews extinguished it by 6:40pm.

SUNLAND-TUJUNGA - Approximately 102 Firefighters responded to a fire that broke out just before 11:00am near the intersection of Big Tujunga Canyon Road and Tujunga Canyon Boulevard. The fire consumed nearly seven acres of brush, but crews were able to knock it down in a little more than an hour. High humidity and cooler temperatures aided the Firefighters and thankfully no injuries were reported.

LAFD RECRUIT ACADEMY CLASS 2015-4 GRADUATION June 9 TERMINAL ISLAND - The Los Angeles Fire Department welcomed 45 new graduates from their 20-week training academy at Harbor Recruit Training Academy 40. The training academy is geared toward preparing the recruits for a successful career with the LAFD. The graduation ceremony was followed by a skills demonstration from the members of class 2015-4.

HOMELESS MAN ARRESTED FOR SETTING FATAL FIRE June 13 WESTLAKE - A 21-year-old homeless man was charged with murder after he allegedly set a fire in a vacant office building that killed five people. Firefighters arrived at 2411 West 8th Street where they found a building well involved in flames. Two men and two women were found in the charred ruins of the two-story structure and another male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Nearly 150 Firefighters took down the fire in two and a half hours, while the suspected arsonist and another person were taken to an area hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.

BRUSH FIRE June 19 SILVER LAKE - Shortly after 1:00pm, Firefighters responded to a fire that consumed more than eight acres of dry brush along the 2 and 5 Freeways. Nearly 200 LAFD Firefighters were on-scene engaging in ground operations as three waterdropping helicopters strategically aided the firefight from the air. Due to the extraordinary work of the Firefighters, who were also assisted by LACoFD, Glendale FD, and Park Rangers, only three sheds burned and two homes suffered fire damage. The blaze was contained in 44 minutes before reaching a row of neighboring homes.

FIREFIGHTER APPRECIATION NIGHT AT DODGER STADIUM June 21 ELYSIAN PARK - The Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed LA City Firefighters and dozens of others from all over Southern California for the 3rd Annual Firefighter Appreciation Night in support of the California Fire Foundation. The California Fire Foundation provides emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen Firefighters. The Foundation also created and maintains the California Firefighters Memorial in Sacramento to honor Firefighters killed in the line of duty.

THREE-CAR COLLISION June 26 SUN VALLEY - Firefighters rushed to the scene of a threecar crash at the intersection of Sheldon Street and Glenoaks Boulevard at around 7:00pm. One person was extricated from a vehicle, while Firefighters tended to a total of eight people, with five suffering critical injuries. Several of the injured were transported to local hospitals.

CANOGA PARK - At 3:21pm, Firefighters responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 8400 block of De Soto Avenue. A motorhome hit an electrical structure, knocked over a fire hydrant, and nearly landed in the Browns Canyon Wash. Firefighters had to force entry into the locked RV where they found two people who were declared dead at the scene.

NEW LAFD 50-TON HEAVY RESCUE APPARATUS July 7 A new 2016 “Century” 50-ton Heavy Rescue Apparatus was delivered to the LAFD to replace the aging 40-ton Heavy Rescue (HR56) and was put into service over the Summer. The LAFD Design, Purchase, and Fleet Maintenance Teams developed a state-of-the-art apparatus, which required over a year of preparation from specification development all the way to final inspection. The process for procuring the new Heavy Rescue was a cooperative effort between Supply and Maintenance (Fleet Maintenance Section, Equipment Engineering Unit and Purchasing Unit), the Grants Section, and several field members. Built to LAFD specifications and resembling a heavy-duty tow truck, the Heavy Rescue is designed to respond to physical rescue, firefighting and overhaul operations throughout the city.

FATAL HOUSE FIRE July 8 VALLEY VILLAGE - At 7:37am, a one-story house in the 4600 block of Farmdale Avenue was ablaze. The home had “excessive storage conditions” that not only fueled the fire, but also made it difficult for Firefighters to gain entry. More than 50 Firefighters contained the fire in just over three hours and prevented the fire from spreading to two nearby buildings. Sadly, one female resident was found dead, and one Firefighter was injured, but in fair condition.

COMMERCIAL BUILDING FIRE July 14 EL SERENO - Around 6:15pm, nearly 100 Firefighters responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire that engulfed a one-story commercial building. The fire occurred in the 5000 block of Alhambra Avenue, just north of Downtown, near the 10 and 710 Freeways. Authorities closed both sides of Alhambra Avenue to traffic while they dealt with challenging conditions in and around the building. BRUSH FIRE July 16 SEPULVEDA BASIN - Just after 2:00pm, a blaze broke out in the 15700 block of Burbank Boulevard in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area that quickly spread across 10 acres. HOLLYWOOD HILLS - Just after 3:00pm, a brush fire in the Hollywood Hills above the 101 Freeway scorched nearly 20 acres before Firefighters contained the blaze. Using water dropping helicopters from above and more than 200 Firefighters on the ground, crews faced downed power lines and steep terrain to reach the fire and knock it down in two and a half hours.

COMMERCIAL FIRE July 21 WATTS - Firefighters arrived to the 10900 block of South Central Avenue in Watts where they found an outside rubbish fire that had spread to a one-story commercial building. At 5:46pm, nearly 90 Firefighters went into action and skillfully extinguished the flames in just 26 minutes without injures. Due to exceptional work by the Firefighters on duty, damage was limited to the kitchen area of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee building, where as many as 850 seniors are fed each day.

SAND FIRE July 22 SANTA CLARITA VALLEY - From June 22nd until August 3rd, nearly 3,000 Firefighters from all over Southern California fought one of the most devastating fires in State history. The Sand Fire broke out in the Santa Clarita Valley, fueled by hot temperatures, dry brush, and chaparral. State officials declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles County after more than 40,000 acres of land had been burned. Air and ground crews were finally able to contain the blaze that left 18 homes destroyed and caused one death.

PALLET YARD FIRE July 23 DOWNTOWN LA - Shortly before 7:00pm, a fire broke out in a pallet yard at 748 South Ceres Avenue that spread to a one-story commercial building. Officials reported that more than 140 Firefighters took over two hours to contain the fire and worked to keep the fire from spreading to five other buildings in the vicinity. The baled textiles and instability of the structure made it unsafe for Firefighters to enter and although it was a total loss, no injuries were reported due to the extraordinary work of the Fire Crews on the scene. STRUCTURE FIRE July 26 SOUTH LOS ANGELES - Around 2:00pm, Firefighters from LA City and LA County worked together to save a commercial building in the 6500 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard. With flames showing on the second level of the split-level building, truck crews used ladder pipe to extinguish flames for over 90 minutes and protected a neighboring building from fire damage. DEADLY HOUSE FIRE July 30 SUN VALLEY - A structure fire broke out just after 8:00pm in a gated community at 9145 La Tuna Canyon Road. 63 Firefighters arrived to find a home fully engulfed in flames. Crews were able to extinguish the blaze in 38 minutes; but tragically, an elderly couple was trapped inside the home. Despite the heroic efforts of the Firefighters using CPR and other resuscitation, both victims succumbed to their injuries. Rick McClure

HOUSE FIRE July 30 STUDIO CITY - Firefighters rushed to the 11400 block of Decente Court at around 11:45pm to find a two-story home well involved with flames. Despite the limited access to the structure, the crews knocked down the blaze in 30 minutes. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. A dog was found inside the residence, but unfortunately, the pet was beyond help.

GAS LINE FIRE August 3 WOODLAND HILLS - Los Angeles Department of Water and Power workers accidentally struck a 4-inch gas line with a backhoe, igniting a fire that lasted for over two hours just before 1:00pm at 5858 Shoup Avenue near Miranda Street. 75 Firefighters responded to the incident and prevented the flames from spreading to nearby brush and residences. SoCal Gas was called in to shutoff the gas line and due to the swift work of the Firefighters on the scene, no injuries were reported.

MAJOR EMERGENCY FIRE DAMAGES THREE HOMES August 10 PICO-UNION - A fire ravaged three Craftsman-style homes at around 4:45pm in the 1200 block of South Bonnie Brae Street. Over 140 Firefighters fought the flames that were well established in the attics of two of the homes and encroaching on a third home. Crews began an aggressive interior fire attack with a coordinated roof ventilation operation on all three structures. An off-duty, 29-year veteran of the LAFD was also in the area and took swift action to aid residents and prevent any injuries to occupants in the homes. Fortunately, all residents safely escaped unharmed and Firefighters saved the lives of two dogs from the damaged homes. Sadly, a third dog and one cat did not survive. The 41 displaced occupants, 32 adults and nine children, were all transported to Fire Station 13 to be temporarily sheltered until the Red Cross arrived to provide assistance.

HEROIC RESCUE August 11 DOWNTOWN - Around 1:20pm, Fire Officials reported that a construction worker was injured while on top of a crane 270-feet above ground in the 800 block of South Hill Street. Paramedics were able to climb up the crane ladder to assess the workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s injuries and determined the safest way to bring him down was by helicopter hoist rescue. The harrowing position of the injured worker made it difficult for Firefighters to retrieve him, so a LAFD Air-Ops team was sent to successfully rescue the injured worker and transport him to a local hospital where he was listed in fair condition.

MOTORHOME CRASH August 11 SYLMAR - A 52-year-old driver was killed when he crashed a motorhome into the side of a house in the 13600 block of North Borden Avenue. The crash occurred at 11:39pm when the vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s driver and his dog veered off the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the dog was unharmed. There were two residents inside the home during the crash, but were determined to be uninjured after being checked by medical personnel.

VIOLENT CAR CRASH August 12 SUNLAND - Firefighters sprang into action at the scene of a violent three-car collision in the 9300 block of La Tuna Canyon Road that left two men dead and six other victims injured. The collision occurred on a blind bend of La Tuna Canyon Road where emergency responders were forced to use the Jaws of Life to free some of the victims. Four males, two minors and two adults, were listed in critical condition, while two other male victims sustained minor injuries.

BRUSH FIRE NEAR FREEWAY OFF-RAMP August 26 PACOIMA - At 1:22am, Firefighters responded to a brush fire near the 118 Freewayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s San Fernando Road off-ramp that burned an area full of brush, undergrowth, and eucalyptus. GARAGE FIRE KILLS TWO PETS September 1 VAN NUYS - A fire was reported at 5:51pm in the 7000 Block of Bevis Avenue. 66 Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the flames within 22 minutes. The blaze ripped through the garage and extended to the attic and home. Sadly, two of three pet dogs perished in the fast-moving fire.

VALLEY VILLAGE - 21 people were injured when a Metrolink train headed for Downtown Los Angeles hit a tractor-trailer that was crossing the tracks in the 8200 block of San Fernando Road at 10:39am. Approximately 75 Firefighters arrived on the scene to find five train cars carrying 187 passengers with several injured individuals. Firefighters jumped into action, triaging the incident and quickly rendering medical aid to the victims. A total of 21 passengers were transported to local hospitals.

9/11 MEMORIALS LOS ANGELES - Every year, Los Angeles Firefighters gather at public ceremonies across the City to remember those brave Firefighters and First Responders who lost their lives saving others on that fateful day. LA Firefighters and Police Officers pay their respects at the Los Angeles Fire Department 9/11 Memorial located at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center. The monument is dedicated to the 343 New York Firefighters killed in the World Trade Center attacks. The 23-ton, approximately 22-foot tall steel column was originally part of the lobby structure of the WTC. The ceremony includes â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Ringing of the Bellâ&#x20AC;? and a missing man formation flyover by Air Ops. At the LAFD Historical Society Museum and Fallen Firefighters Memorial located at Fire Station 27, the ceremony begins with a moment of silence where bells are rung at the approximate times that the first and second towers of the World Trade Center collapsed. A flag is also lowered to half-staff. Speakers recount the heroic actions of New York Firefighters and share stories of LAFD Firefighters who traveled to New York to take part in the recovery and relief efforts in the wake of this tragedy. The last public gathering takes place at the 9/11 Memorial Fountain at Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks where Firefighters recognize September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance to reflect on that ill-fated day and all who were killed in New York, Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia on September 11, 2001. APARTMENT FIRE September 11 NORTHRIDGE - At around 1:30am, Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 9800 block of Reseda Avenue. A single unit at a three-story apartment building was well involved with flames when the Fire Crews arrived, but their efforts limited the blaze from spreading to other units. SMOKING SUPPLY FIRM GOES UP IN FLAMES September 12 DOWNTOWN LA - At 8:10pm Firefighters responded to a Greater Alarm Fire at a 100-year-old, two-story commercial building located at 330 East Third Street in the Toy District. Initially, Fire Crews engaged in an intense interior attack, while additional personnel were deployed to the roof to aid in the vertical ventilation of heat and smoke. A wholesaler and distributor of smoking materials occupied the building and highly flammable materials were stored inside, including pressurized gas cylinders, which began exploding. Fire Crews were forced to take a defensive posture and employ large hose streams from outside the structure. 164 Firefighters confined the inferno to the building of origin and extinguished the blaze in two hours and four minutes.

MULTIPLE ALARM FIRE AT COMMERCIAL BUILDING September 16 SOUTH LOS ANGELES - Firefighters responded to a multiple-alarm fire at a two-story commercial building at 5861 South Avalon Boulevard around 2:40pm. The blaze was centered around the large commercial structure and a metal shed next door, but an adjacent single-family home was also heavily damaged. The roof of the largest building collapsed, but thanks to vigilant work by the Firefighters on scene, a potential explosion of large propane tanks located onsite was avoided. During the firefight, two Firefighters became separated from their crew and a mayday call was issued, but by 3:30pm, the fire was extinguished and they were found uninjured.

SINGLE VEHICLE EXTRICATION September 18 HOLLYWOOD - A 30-year-old man was critically injured when the car he was driving rolled over on Cahuenga Pass at 7:01am. Firefighters and Paramedics arrived to the 3300 block of Barham Boulevard where they worked to successfully extricate the man from the vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was reported to be in grave condition.

VEHICLE SEARCH AND RESCUE September 30 BEVERLY CREST - A team of LAFD Firefighters, including an Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, worked to save a man whose vehicle tumbled from the roadway over a steep canyon along Mulholland Drive. Fire crews used a rope system to hoist the man to safety and successfully made the rescue.

BRUSH FIRE October 1 GRIFFITH PARK - More than 74 Firefighters arrived to the scene of a Â˝-acre brush fire in the 4700 block of Crystal Springs Drive at around 3:00pm. The fire was quickly extinguished, but Firefighters remained on the scene to put out any lingering hot spots.

TOWNHOUSE FIRE October 8 SUNLAND-TUJUNGA - Firefighters arrived at 11:49am to the 10100 block of North Samoa Avenue to find a three-story townhouse engulfed in flames. Approximately 68 Firefighters successfully knocked down the blaze in just 37 minutes and prevented the fire from causing damage to an adjacent unit. WESTLAKE - At around 8:45pm, a fire was reported at a 15-story, high-rise senior living facility in the 400 block of South Union Avenue that injured five people. Firefighters were met with several challenges, in addition to extinguishing the fire, including an extensive search and rescue effort for trapped victims and evacuation of elderly residents. In total, approximately 150 Firefighters worked to douse the blaze in just 42 minutes. Five residents were transported to local hospitals, three with critical injuries and two in serious condition.

NORTH HILLS - At 9:10pm, Firefighters arrived at the scene of a five-vehicle collision at the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Woodley Avenue that killed one motorist and injured two other people. A 35-year-old driver of a Honda Odyssey was suspected of drunk driving when his car hit a Ford Taurus and three additional vehicles. The Honda driver was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Firefighters extricated one motorist who was pronounced dead at the scene and two other victims who were treated with minor injuries.

NORTHRIDGE - Three condominium units were damaged from a Greater Alarm Fire that started in a shared common attic in the 9600 block of North Amigo Avenue at 9:10am. Firefighters successfully battled the blaze in the original unit, but the fire spread to adjacent units before the flames were doused in 26 minutes. Fortunately, all occupants were out of the building and no injuries were reported.

BRUSH FIRE October 19 GRANADA HILLS - A brush fire was reported at 1:12pm at 17258 Sesnon Boulevard that rapidly grew to over five acres. Nearly 100 Firefighters responded to the incident with assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The blaze was extinguished in 31 minutes, no structures were threatened, and no evacuations or injuries were reported.

The Inaugural Cancer Summit hosted by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), San Francisco Firefighters Local 798, and the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation, brought together the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foremost doctors, scientists, and experts in cancer-related research and technology. UFLAC President Frank Lima and 1st Vice President Tony Gamboa were proud to participate in the event. Studies show that Firefighters are 63% more likely to acquire cancer than members of the general public due to their regular exposure to toxic substances that have led to countless Firefighter lives being lost over the years. The twoday summit included presentations on various topics such as the Impact of Firefighter Exposures while Extinguishing Fires, the Latest Research on Cancer in the Fire Service, Current and Future Legislative Efforts to Impact Firefighter Exposure to Toxic Substances, and a special presentation by NantHealth Chairman and CEO Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD about the groundbreaking Cancer MoonShot 2020. UFLAC thanks the IAFF and Local 798 for their incredible work to put this Summit together.

MOUNT WASHINGTON HOUSE FIRE October 20 MOUNT WASHINGTON - A fire ripped through a mansion in the 4000 block of North Sea View Avenue at around 8:35pm. More than 140 Firefighters fought back the flames of the 9,111 square-foot home and had the conflagration contained in two hours and 47 minutes. An Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, including cadaver dogs, spent days searching for an 84-year-old man who was identified as one of 12 people who lived in the home. In addition to the missing victim, four residents had to be rescued and one woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

RAINY CONDITIONS LEAD TO VEHICLE CRASH October 30 STUDIO CITY - Just before 10:30am, a single vehicle crashed into a tree in the 11100 block of Ventura Boulevard, leaving two people injured and the driver trapped and in need of aid. Firefighters extricated the driver from SUV, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The passenger of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital in serious condition.

TWO-STORY HOUSE FIRE October 31 WOODLAND HILLS - Firefighters arrived to the 5000 block of Tendilla Avenue shortly before 1:00pm to find a two-story, hillside home that was under construction ablaze. Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames within 40 minutes.

WINNETKA - At 2:59am, 168 Firefighters battled a Greater Alarm Fire at a West San Fernando Valley strip mall. Flames were coming from the roof of the onestory, four-tenant commercial building located at the northeast corner of Sherman Way and De Soto Avenue. Firefighters extinguished the flames in just 49 minutes, but during the inferno, one Firefighter suffered a nonthreatening burn injury to his hand and was taken to a local hospital in fair condition.

APARTMENT BUILDING FIRE November 15 CHINATOWN - A fire broke out in the bottom floor of an apartment building in the 900 block of West College Street leaving one person dead. More than 80 Firefighters arrived at the building at around 7:30am to gain control of the blaze, which was knocked down within 30 minutes. Firefighters limited the fire damage to the single unit where the body was discovered. One other person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

UNION STATION BLAZE November 19 UNION STATION - Approximately 82 Firefighters arrived at the historic Union Station to fight a fire that threatened the main structure. Reports from the scene had the fire originating from a rollaway trash dumpster that spread to an office next to the main entrance to the famous train terminal on Alameda Avenue. LA FIREFIGHTERS DISTRIBUTE TURKEYS ON THANKSGIVING November 24 Firefighters from Fire Station 20 delivered Thanksgiving meals to residents at Alegria, a transitional care facility for the chronically ill, and the Dream Center, a social services organization. The generosity of the Firefighters extended to Dodger Stadium where they handed out over a thousand turkeys to deserving families along with assistance from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

2016 SPARK OF LOVE TOY DRIVE November 25 The LAFD kicked-off the 2016 Spark of Love Toy Drive, the annual program to collect new, unwrapped toys and sporting goods for local children in need. Donations are collected at neighborhood Fire Stations across the City throughout the holiday season. The LAFD also holds special â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stuff-A-Busâ&#x20AC;? events for toy collection in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and ABC7.

COMMERCIAL FIRE November 26 CHATSWORTH - At 10:26pm, a fire raged at a row of one-story commercial buildings in the 9400 block of De Soto Avenue. A team of Firefighters responded to battle the blaze that originated in one of the units and spread to a second unit. The coordinated effort of the crews prevented the fire from spreading to nearby units and the blaze was knocked down in 30 minutes.

VEHICLE CRASH INTO HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT November 29 VAN NUYS - At 6:14pm, Fire Crews responded to the scene of a vehicle accident at a homeless encampment near the off-ramp at Sherman Way and the 405 Freeway. It was reported that a vehicle drove off an embankment on the right shoulder shortly after 6:00pm and landed on Strathern Street. As Firefighters assessed the scene, they found three individuals who were treated for injuries and sadly, one victim was pronounced dead.

HOUSE FIRE TRAPS SQUATTERS December 4 KOREATOWN - At 3:53pm, a fast-moving fire ripped through an abandoned home in the 700 block of South Wilton Place that had allegedly been occupied by squatters. Approximately 96 responding Firefighters found five people trying to escape the burning two-story, Craftsman-style home and two of the victims suffered burn injuries. One woman, who may have jumped from the second floor and sustained facial trauma, along with another burn victim were transported to an area hospital in serious, but stable condition.

EXPLOSION AT HOME INJURES TWO December 7 SUN VALLEY - Two men were critically injured when the home they were in exploded and caught fire. The blaze was reported just before 4:30pm in the 8300 block of Glencrest Drive and over 40 Firefighters extinguished the blaze in just over 30 minutes that was primarily centered in the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garage and attic.

APARTMENT FIRE December 8 HYDE PARK - A fire at an apartment was reported at around 1:00am in the 7500 block of Crenshaw Boulevard that left a 78-year-old woman dead. It took 48 Firefighters approximately 20 minutes to douse the flames that originated from a first-floor unit that partially damaged a second-floor unit above. Firefighters discovered a gravely injured woman inside and rushed her to a local hospital, where she later died.

STORAGE YARD FIRE December 20 SHERMAN OAKS - Firefighters were summoned to the 5800 block of North Sepulveda Boulevard at 5:04pm to fight a large fire in the rear of a one-story strip mall. As the flames towered above, 74 Firefighters sprang into action to avoid downed power lines and douse the flames in less than 90 minutes. The fire originated from a group of stacked portable spas, wooden pallets, packaging materials, and vegetation that was secured in an outdoor storage area behind the mall.

AUTO SHOP FIRE December 21 VAN NUYS - At 8:45pm, 70 Firefighters responded to a large structure fire at a commercial building in the 7800 block of Sepulveda Boulevard. The fire began on the second floor of one of two adjacent auto shop businesses and quickly spread to the roof. Extra precautions were taken to prevent hazardous materials onsite from erupting and the blaze was fully contained in 38 minutes.

The Los Angeles Fire Department mourns the off-duty death of Active Duty Captain II Sean P. Stilson, who died unexpectedly on April 22nd. Captain Stilson served as an instructor in Drill Tower 81, where a memorial ceremony was held in his honor on May 6th. He was remembered as a dedicated and respected officer who helped shape the future of the LAFD. Our brother Sean Stilson will be deeply missed.

Los Angeles Firefighters mourn the loss of Active Duty Inspector Michael P. Reddy, who passed away on November 17th at age 39 after losing his battle with cancer. Michael was a 15-year veteran of the LAFD and worked as a Firefighter, a Firefighter/Paramedic, and a Fire Inspector, where he helped to establish the Department’s first-ever Community Risk Reduction Unit. Inspector Reddy was bestowed the rank of Captain and was presented with a Captain’s helmet in his final days. His son, Brent, accepted Michael’s badge on his behalf at the ceremony where Michael would have promoted. Michael leaves behind his wife, Kim, and children Tyara (24), Brent (7), and Grace (3).

THE FALLEN IAFF MEMORIAL Representatives from the LAFD Honor Guard and UFLAC Executive Board traveled to the newly renovated International Association of Fire Fighters Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colorado on September 17th. The names of LAFD Firefighter Gary M. Stameisen and LAFD Pilot/Firefighter Steven L. Robinson were added to the thousands of others etched into the Wall of Honor that commemorates all those who have died in the line of duty, as well as the alarming number of Firefighters who have succumbed to chronic illnesses linked to the fire service such as cancer and heart disease. This annual memorial ceremony brings between 5,000 and 7,000 people from all over the United States and Canada to Colorado for this moving and important event that honors our heroes.
