Hosts NJ Chapter of ASID Blackman Plumbing Supply was pleased to host members of the New Jersey Chapter of ASID for an installment of their Spec4Design series. The event, titled ‘Sink Sense: Navigating Today’s Vast Kitchen’ held in both the Mahwah, New Jersey and Lakewood, New Jersey showrooms, was presented by representatives from Elkay. Representatives from Elkay provided attendees with an overview of the variety of sink materials and configurations available, shedding light on the importance of the sink in kitchen design and the three main factors that guide the selection process: functionality, aesthetics and cost. Fresh from KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) in January, participants were educated on the most popular kitchen sink materials, with quartz, stainless and fireclay leading the way. Other style trends discussed included the popularity of neutrals, modern/ clean lines, sustainability and mixed materials. n

Impressions at ISH, ICFF, KBIS, Coverings ‘17 and Dallas Lighting Market

David Lyon and Robert Sonneman at the Sonneman booth.

The Script line by Kallista.

The ISH Fair in Germany and the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in New York City were two recent design shows attended by David Lyon, Vice President Retail Division of Blackman. These notable events highlight hundreds of new items and up-and-coming additions to the design world, giving Lyon a global view that he brings right back to the Blackman showrooms. Trend-spotters know that the ISH Fair in Frankfurt is the premier trade event for bathrooms, air conditioning and technology, making it a lightning rod for new ideas. “Black and white influences were prevalent throughout the ISH Fair,” said Lyon. “There wasn’t anything that didn’t follow that trend, from vitreous china sinks, finishes, faucets, and even a tub exterior was shown in a black rubberized material.” Trends at the ISH Fair typically foreshadow what will be offered at Blackman’s showrooms in the near future, Lyon says. “At the ISH Fair two years ago, gold was a strong trend, so Blackman brought it in for our customers. This show was all about black. I think black is back; it’s going to be here for a while and we’re going to see a lot of it.”

Lyon noticed a subtle change in furniture design when attending New York’s ICFF in May. “I think the furniture end of the design spectrum is starting to change, but very slowly. It is moving away from boxy, square and low hung to the more graceful and fluid lines that we are seeing in Europe.” The smallest details often make the biggest impact, Lyon says. “New textures on faucets are stopping us in our tracks at the ICFF. Looks are very tactile, finishes are elegant, and shapes are different. The line of faucets by David Rockwell for Gessi shows everything from spun metal to grid patterns, it’s very exciting.” Walking past hundreds of booths at ICFF is an experience Lyon thoroughly enjoys. “This show is thrilling. After traveling to Germany, then coming back to New York City—the design capital of the world— and seeing all these displays reaching our market is great. The ICFF has grown over the years, it’s not just furniture, we are seeing lighting, tile, plumbing fixtures, wall coverings, fabrics and more.” Attending the ISH Fair and ICFF, as well as the Dallas Lighting Market , and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show and Coverings ‘17, both in Orlando, means Lyon can be ahead of the curve when it comes to making the latest cutting-edge designs available in every Blackman showroom. “All aspects of design are shown, which makes it a great opportunity for us here at Blackman to deliver it to our customers.” n

Bright Ideas Southampton’s talented sales associate, Amanda Guglielmi creates custom lighting for a new home client.

A

manda Guglielmi, a talented sales associate in Blackman’s Southampton Showroom, designed custom lighting fixtures for a Blackman client outfitting a newly-built home on Long Island. She explained the details of this design project, giving a behindthe-scenes look at the process.

“This custom project came about when Southport Custom Homes asked me to work with them,” Guglielmi said. “They are a premier custom builder in the Hamptons, so I was thrilled. I have also had the pleasure of working with them in the past. This client is fun; they are very brave and open to design, which makes my job creative and fun.” One of the custom lighting fixtures Guglielmi designed makes a dramatic impact right at the home’s main entry. “The huge ‘draped chain’ unit in one of the front spiral staircases is showcased perfectly,” she said. “The manufacturer, Eurofase, actually has it on their website as an example of custom project work.” Guglielmi said that customized lighting is a smart and achievable way to personalize a home. “Custom design is great ...it’s one-ofa-kind, just like our clients and their homes. Who wouldn’t want something made just for them?” She noted that the showroom’s clientele puts a lot of thought into superior style, and they can expect the same level of 16

high design at Blackman. “We offer the bestof-the-best product lines as well as custom pieces. It’s a great marriage for our clients.” Once the home was completed, the new owner was thrilled with the customized lighting Guglielmi designed, and so was the owner of Southport Custom Homes. “The visit www.blackman.com

builder had a huge hand in the designing of all the custom and non-custom lighting I did for them,” she said. “They had a clear vision of what they wanted long before they even approached me. It was fun-- and a big challenge for me as a designer-- to bring that vision to life.”

Blackman at Home

Staff members are familiar with the many details involved in new construction homes, Guglielmi said. “Blackman consultants are knowledgeable in all aspects of the challenging construction industry process. We share our thoughts and creative knowledge with each other, so even if you are working with one consultant, we all utilize each other’s knowledge to make the design as perfect as we can.” This collaborative approach is a valuable benefit for customers, she adds. “It’s truly a group effort and we never say no. We will find a solution rather than let someone walk out.” With a focus on excellent service, the Blackman staff is dedicated to customer satisfaction. “We treat each client as special as the client before them,” Guglielmi said. “I don’t think people realize the amount of time it takes to design, quote and spec a houseful of plumbing, lighting and tile. It’s hours and hours, but we love the work and we love to see our clients happy when the finished product is revealed.” n

Fixing the Kitchen Sink Form meets function in an innovative Julien kitchen sink design by Ariella Werzberger, a sales associate in Blackman’s Mahwah Showroom. It all started with a kitchen sink. When a display sink in Blackman’s Mahwah showroom was discontinued, sales associate Ariella Werzberger decided to take the matter into her own hands. She partnered with Julien, a leading kitchen equipment manufacturer, to design a new floor model. “I wanted something special and unique that our clients didn’t have,” Werzberger explains. Beginning with a sketch of her idea, Werzberger worked closely with a team of engineers and production staff at Julien to create a highly stylish yet hardworking sink. The result is a sleek, custom model with a number of innovative features. Fabricated of 16-gauge commercial grade stainless steel, the apron-front design offers a collection of integrated industrial-style accessories accented in walnut trim. “People are always looking for accessories, so this sink has them all in one area to minimize clutter and maximize a streamlined look,” Werzberger says. “The walnut trim draws people’s attention with a warm, organic feel.” Accessories include a walnut cutting board that slides into place across the sink top, a stainless steel drying rack with walnut trim, a stainless steel colander accented by walnut handles, and a champagne cooler made of wood with a stainless steel-rimmed opening to hold a bottle in place when the sink is filled with ice. These accessories allow the sink to serve multiple purposes, including additional counter space when the cutting board slides in place. The sink is a success on the showroom floor, with orders already taken for this custom item. Werzberger reports that working with the staff at Julien was a positive experience, and the collaborative backand-forth spirit made for an exciting project that she hopes to repeat in the future. “From the aesthetics to the technical components and installation, Julien was an ideal design partner,” she adds. Werzberger has a strong background in retail and customer service, joining the Mahwah showroom about three years ago. “It’s a wonderful thing that Blackman allows me to be creative and gave me the opportunity to contribute my design ideas to this kitchen sink; it’s just one of the great things about working at Blackman,” she notes. n

Trends Inspired by Nature

Faux Bois is a French term, meaning “false wood,” and refers to creating the look of branches, wood forms and grains. Crafting Faux Bois furniture by sculpting concrete over a steel form is a centuries-old art that has enjoyed sustained popularity due to its durability, beauty and sophistication.

Inspired by Nature One of the best ways to enjoy your garden is to supply generous seating; it encourages a quiet moment or hosts an al fresco luncheon. Choices range from benches rendered in clean, modern lines or seating that embraces authentic Adirondack style using branch-like forms. Let summer’s warm breezes gently waft over you in a tropically-inspired lounger. Highlight your garden with unique concrete planters in towering shapes capped by a bit of greenery, or try an inventive mannequin figure reminiscent of an ancient artifact. 26

Thomas Hucker

Perfecting Form & Function

Celebrated furniture designer Thomas Hucker brings a global sensibility to every consigned piece he creates. By Gwen Donovan

A day in the life of furniture designer Thomas Hucker begins at one of the few remaining industrial buildings in one of New Jersey’s trendiest towns. “I work in an old factory building in Hoboken, the old Tastykake factory; I’ve been here around 30 years and share the space with two other businesses,” he says. “It’s a dirty, lumber-filled space and I come in around 9 o’clock and work whatever project I’ve got going. Then I head home at night for dinner and do paperwork or design work on the computer.”

Thomas Hucker

Hucker’s impressive background merges stellar academics and real-world philosophies. A Fulbright scholar, he trained with fifth-generation German cabinetmaker Leonard Hilgner, where he was exposed to fabrication and composition, as well as the great traditions of European and Asian furniture-making. He went on to study under Jere Osgood at Boston University’s Program in Artisanry in the late-1970s. This influential experience shaped his design aesthetic based on Osgood’s Scandinavian traditions as well as a personal interest in Japanese tea ceremonies, a unique design perspective that continues to inform his work today. In 1990, he studied product design at Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, which focused on developing concepts as a means of generating design.

This piece reflects a Chinese and abstract impressionist influences. The metal is done in bronze with some pieces cast and others forged. The below panels are made of Yew and the frame is Swiss Pear.

This international journey has led to a highly creative and fulfilling career. “I do like the hands-on aspect of the design and craftsmanship, it’s a constant challenge,” Hucker says. “It’s amazing how it keeps you occupied, all the design work, joinery, and seeking out the best materials you can find and setting goals for yourself. I do everything from sweeping the floors in the studio to being involved with clients personally.” This designer’s progressive ideas about form and function are inspired by everyday life. “Books and museums are at the top of the list. Reading, walking and looking are other ways to be inspired,” he says.

Historic Inspiration. Modern Expression.

Named for Piazza del Campo in Sienna, Italy, the ROHL Italian Bath Campo series celebrates the famous systems of conduits that bring water to the area. In the 14th century miles of tunnels and aqueducts were built, delivering water

“My philosophy is that it has to look great and it has to be comfortable.”

How would you describe your design style? Transitional, meaning modern/ mid-century modern, which is paired with old elements in the mix for a sense of history and time. When you’re mixing styles and periods it makes for good design. I try not to embrace trends too much. I look for longevity in classic things that stand the test of time. What are some of the common threads you rely on for your signature style? The biggest thing for me is to try and re-purpose things. My philosophy is that it has to look great and it has to be comfortable. Comfort, function and beauty are so important. I’m not a designer that you can say “That’s a Greg McKenzie room.” It’s a very intimate thing to be invited into someone’s house and make it into their home. What was your favorite design project? I just completed a year-long, 5,500square-foot apartment in Palm Beach where all the bath fixtures came from Blackman.

What is your background in the design field? I have a degree in English with a minor in political communications. Early in my career I was in advertising with a sales and marketing background. Then I switched to retail, working for companies like Devonshire (I managed a Devonshire shop in the East End), and later I was a stylist. Once I realized design was my forte, I went to design school and started my business in 2001.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I get inspiration from all sorts of places: clothing, color samples, color palette swatches, a piece of furniture or a rug. Anyone worth their salt in the design field is always learning. 56

Do you have any design secrets to share? I like to work with the architectural style of a home when I design. A traditional home looks strange with all modern furnishings; you need to find a happy medium where the architecture matches the interior. I strongly associate my design approach and a home’s location. If it’s at the beach, there’s an element of relaxation. In New York City, you want some glamour. In Miami Beach, you can go a little wild and extraordinary. Palm Beach is all about color and casual elegance. Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your design firm? Most of my clients are longtime and we have worked on multiple projects together. My big thing is I really, really enjoy and love what I do and I think that shows in the final product. It’s got to feel good, and it’s got to feel like home. ■

How would you describe your design style? I am definitely classic and traditional with a high degree of comfortable living, nothing stiff or formal. Green is my favorite color, it brings the outdoors in. I also like red and use a lot of brown, black and dark blues. What are some of the design elements that define your signature style? There are several things you can do to make a room really special. Wood paneling, wallpaper and special colors—I’m not into white—are big things for me. I really love oriental rugs, white slipcovered couches with lots of throw pillows, and textiles and throws from around the world. I don’t like heavy shades or drapes, I hope for architectural windows that stand alone. I am also a fan of “books for looks.” Coffee table books have such great covers. In bedrooms, I am a fan of canopy beds. They make a room look cozy and it’s a nice place to lay your head at night.

“I am definitely classic and traditional with a high degree of comfortable living, nothing stiff or formal.” What was your favorite design project? I just worked with my architect and we partnered to restore a landmark 1927 Spanish Villa in Palm Beach. Over the years, the original look was no longer honored. Now it has a restored façade with a parapet wall trimmed in terra cotta, steel mullions on the windows, and pecky cypress wood from Florida. It was designed with the Florida vernacular in mind using an organic approach and natural materials. The home has new air conditioning, new baths, and integrates finishes like limestone, cypress, terra cotta and a clay tile roof. We kept everything we could and added balustrades and paneling. That sounds like a fabulous home! Yes, it won two awards. The Addison Mizner medal from The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and the Elizabeth L. and John H. Schuler Award for new construction of a whole house from the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. What is your background in the design field? I have a B.A. in history from Mount Holyoke College and spent 21 years on Wall Street until 2003 when I went to the New York School of Interior Design. I am one course short of a design degree! My favorite class was called The Science of Color.

“There is no decorating police; you should do what makes you happy and what you like.” How do you continue to be inspired when it comes to designing interior spaces? Every night I read through a pile of coffee table books. I can constantly find ideas from design books and design magazines, and put my own spin on it. Then I go to bed thinking about new ideas.

Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your design firm? There is no decorating police; you should do what makes you happy and what you like. Take inspiration from anything you see, and don’t re-invent the wheel. ■

Designer Feature Amy Hill - Home is Where The Heart Is

How would you describe your design style? It’s a little bit of everything, but casual elegance sums it up. How does that style translate into the design elements you choose? Since some of the areas I work in are near the beach, I like to integrate that beachy feeling but not in a kitschy way. I like more organic pieces paired with refined pieces, like a beautiful oversized teak coffee table with an elegant chandelier. About 90% of my clients have second and third homes; they are sophisticated, welltraveled and very intelligent. They also have kids, guests and pets, so they want something that’s not fussy yet still chic and elegant. What is the best part of your job as a designer? I am absolutely so fortunate to have the most amazing clients who are fun to work with and down-to-earth. We have become great friends, so I feel very fortunate. I wake up every morning and love to go to work. Whether I am meeting with a builder, advising my clients, or going to a Blackman showroom, I am passionate about my job.

What is your professional background? I have a master’s degree in psychology and had a private practice. I went on to get my real estate license and later worked with builders staging houses. I eventually moved to the interior design field about six years ago. How do you continue to be inspired when it comes to designing interior spaces? I can be inspired by walking on the beach or walking down a block in the Hamptons and looking in the shop windows. I like to travel, visit amazing resorts and figure out what gives you that welcome feeling of being home. That’s the most important part of my job, identifying what feels like home for my clients and giving

that to them. Is there anything else you’d like share about your design firm? I am very passionate about what I do. I tend to go above and beyond for my clients. Once I set a Thanksgiving table for a client, I like to take their breath away. A lot of people call me up crying because they are so happy with their home. I try to go that extra step. Once I had a client whose son had to be gluten-free. Before they came home, I set up a table with a gluten-free food section, flowers, food, and even something for their dog. I want all my clients to feel like they’re at home, since your home equals your escape. ■

Refined+ Well-Editied

How would you describe your design style? I’m not sure I have a particular style, rather I have a particular taste. I like a room to feel refined, balanced and well-edited. At the same time, I’m very drawn to textures and materials, so a lot of the richness in our designs comes from layering textiles, hard materials, color and nature. Ultimately we want the end result to feel like home to the client, so we aim to let our tastes lead the design rather than our personal styles. What are some of the “common threads” you rely on for your signature style? A home is extremely personal and we are very aware of this. Therefore I think the link in all our residential designs is the focus on listening to and understanding the 70

client’s lifestyle needs. Before we ever pick a piece of furniture or choose a color palette, we design a floor plan to meet those needs. It’s a very thoughtful process. What was your favorite design project? My favorite project is a new construction townhouse in downtown Manhattan--the entire house is only 12-feet wide (only in Manhattan!). We saw the narrow width as an opportunity to design differently. We understood the layout had to be efficient, but we also really focused on treating the materials and finishes like furniture. What I mean by that is the architecture and the furnishings were really one in the same, so the architectural design components drove the overall design: doors, molding, cabinetry and built-ins.

visit www.blackman.com

Blackman at Home

Do you have a personal story you’d like to share about a design project? Friends of mine hired us to redesign and renovate their condo to better suit their growing family. Most often when we finish a project, we hand the keys back to the client and our interaction with the space is completed. However in this instance, I get to participate in the space—I play with their kids in the bedroom we designed, and I help cook in the kitchen we renovated. It’s a reminder of how fun and rewarding interior design is for me and I feel privileged that I get to do this for a living. What is your background in the design field? My formal design education is from Parsons School of Design. However before going to grad school I worked in real estate development, building highrise condos and hotels. Therefore a lot of my construction and renovation background comes from practice. Blackman at Home

How many years have you been an interior designer? I established Cochineal Design 2015 but I’ve been in the field for almost a decade. How do you continue to be inspired when it comes to re-imagining interior spaces? I think we are living in an interesting time for creative fields. Social media has changed the game. When I started, we read trade magazines, went to as many new high-design hotels and restaurants as we could, and travelled in order to discover foreign tastes and methods. Now with Instagram and Pinterest, access to all these things is free and instantaneous. I personally don’t believe digital images can replace experiencing a space in person, because as designers we need to grasp ambiance, circulation and interaction, which a photo can’t express, but I think social media offers a great accompaniment to the more established methods. visit www.blackman.com

“I think the link in all our residential designs is the focus on listening to and understanding the client’s lifestyle needs.” Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your design firm? We work closely with a number of outside trades and vendors, such as millworkers, upholsterers and furniture showrooms, in order to ultimately realize our designs. We appreciate that forming sound and gracious relationships with these parties is paramount to the success of our designs. ■ 71

Laura Michaels, left, and Ondine Karady

Montauk and Manhattan-based designers Laura Michaels and Ondine Karady have a distinctively creative approach which is best described as an amalgamation of “the sea and the city. Manhattan offers access to influences in architecture and furniture design, but it is the beauty of the East End of Long Island that continues to inspire them with lush landscapes, sea life, incredible light and rich natural textures. Marrying this raw beauty with both contemporary and traditional design that is aesthetically pleasing, functional, and client-oriented is what they strive for in every project as partners in Montauk Design Collective. By Gwen Donovan 74

How would you describe your design style? Our designs are beach luxurious, modern and eclectic. We call it Montauk Modern. Modern is a state of mind. What are some of the common threads you rely on for your signature style? We love nature and are drawn to layering natural materials, textures and art; marrying old with new and mixing eclectic treasures (often our clients’ art and collections) that have transcended time with contemporary sustainable pieces. We work closely with clients to create the ideal environment, striving to provide a peaceful beach-luxurious sanctuary, an escape from their everyday bustling lives and a place to recharge. Have you worked on any memorable design projects? We recently completed a passive home on Fort Pond in Montauk. Originally a dilapidated cottage with decades of avoided maintenance— basically a tear-down--it occupied the site on a bucolic piece of property. The homeowner is very environmentally conscious so we followed her lead in creating a home that treads lightly on the environment. We coordinated work that involved a land use company for the permitting, an energy consultant for maximum design efficiency, a high quality local contractor, and a landscape designer. The original cottage was expanded and now uses 85% less energy than a comparable house. We used natural materials and environmentally-friendly paints and stains. Reclaimed oak wood floors on the first and second floors and polished concrete on the lower level with radiant heat not only provide a beautiful foundation for the vast water views, but keep the house at an even temperature throughout the year. The antique ceiling beams are from the 1800s and sourced from Philadelphia. The staircase designed in Italy serves as the main focal point of the home.

The client had many family heirloom treasures that we married with modern, well-designed pieces, providing an eclectic mix of beach modern. Careful consideration went into the chandelier over the dining table; it is centered between 20 feet of glass with sliders, and as Montauk has a fair amount of wind, we decided on rubber. We also incorporated custom- designed furniture and bathroom vanities. Our best projects happen when we work collaboratively from inception with an architect or builder to incorporate functionality and materials with beautiful designs. We then source furnishings within a reasonable budget and put it all together to meet our clients’ aesthetic objective. We provide unsurpassed guidance to clients throughout the whole process.

76

You have such a creative job, what inspires you to come up with innovative design ideas? Our family’s love of surf has taken us around the globe, and we incorporate our discoveries from artisans into our designs, which is the foundation to our relaxed beach luxurious vibe. Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your design firm? We are well-versed in construction materials and applications; we collaborate with architects, construction firms, artisans and craftspeople to design beautiful, livable spaces that are personally crafted for our clients’ lifestyle. We work on residential, commercial and hospitality projects. We also offer consulting services, the perfect and cost-effective option for those who don’t need a full-service designer. You can choose a room package, or an hourly rate for specific services such as drafting, sourcing and brand consulting.

What is your design background? Partner and Designer Laura Michaels is a Montauk-based designer who had previously managed a successful 100-person design firm while raising her daughter in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Five years ago, when Laura’s daughter left for Bard College, she decided to devote more of her time to Montauk, a place where she spent time as a child on her grandfather’s fishing boat and as a second homeowner. Her focus lies on understanding the lifestyle of her clients and then considering the space, proportions, light and material that will ultimately surround them. She has a deep understanding of the construction process and is a pragmatic problem solver who loves collaborating with architects and builders early on in the process. The end product is always more cost effective and efficient when you can collaborate with the project team.

She pays great attention to sourcing materials that harmonize with the space and yet provide superior functionality. Wherever possible the use of ecofriendly, low VOC, and sustainable products are used. She believes the most beautiful spaces are decorated and evolve over time to be lovingly lived in. Partner and Designer Ondine Karady is an internationally-recognized designer with offices in New York and clients throughout the country. She began her career as a set decorator, designing for films and television shows including Requiem for a Dream, The 25th Hour and Sex and the City. Her work on Sex and the City inspired her to devote her talents to home decor, and she founded Ondine Karady Design after the program ended in 2004. She has since won national and international acclaim for having a unique sense of flair and an innate sense of what her clients will want to surround themselves with, understanding that home design is successful only when it captures the sensibilities of those who will dwell in it.

After Ondine was a finalist on the Bravo reality program “Top Design,’” one of the judges, Architectural Digest editor Margaret Russell, told The Washington Post: “She did a great job on the show making her spaces look lived-in and layered. The fact that she has been a set decorator means she knows how to conjure a place and channel someone’s personality.” Her work has caught the eye of magazines including Traditional Home, which named Ondine one of the Top 20 Designers to Watch. “Her spaces are always inventive,” its editors wrote. She was also contacted by the office of Michelle Obama, which asked for samples of her work as the First Lady began redecorating the White House. Ondine was the host of “Minute Makeover,” an online design program sponsored by Ikea and co-produced by AOL and The Huffington Post. Her work has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, The Washington Post, New York magazine and Better Homes and Gardens. Designer Feature Faith Hochman - Style, Comfort & Beauty

Style, Comfort + Beauty Photography by: Faith Hochman

Faith Hochman Faith Hochman owns and operates FH Home Designs, Inc., in Mahwah, New Jersey. Her design philosophy is summed up as “Innovative design and planning that creates the kinds of rooms we want to live in.” With a roster of northern New Jersey and Westchester clients, she believes that thoughtful planning is the key to creating spectacular interiors. How would you describe your design style? I would say sophisticated with modern influences. What are some of the common threads you rely on for your signature style? I like a quiet wow factor, very clean, not cluttered. I don’t like overdoing it, I think less is more. I am attracted to the latest trends yet appreciate timeless pieces, especially the more modern trends that are here to stay. If I am doing more than one room in a house, I want them to flow. I usually choose a cool color palette resulting in serene rooms. I tend to stay on the lighter side of the color spectrum, but I also like to add a pop of a rich color like an aubergine or navy. Oftentimes a monochromatic look using many different textures can be stunning.

80

What advice do you give young people who are just starting out? I work with any budget and I tell all my clients to buy what you can and wait to invest in good things. Don’t decorate it all in three months. You need some good stuff mixed in with the not-so-good stuff. Have you worked on any memorable design projects? I recently worked on a new construction home in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey and it was like starting with a blank canvas. I liked the whole process, since you can choose exactly where to put the lighting and fixtures. Lighting should be a priority and Blackman has a really good range of styles. All the vanities, tile, bathrooms and lighting came from Blackman for this particular project. Their tile selection is really high-end, I found a kitchen backsplash at Blackman that I never saw anywhere else.

What is your background? Do you have any professional memberships, affiliations or awards? I have a business degree from Northeastern University and an educational background. I started my own business about 12 years ago. I was highlyrated on Houzz.com as offering the Best in Customer Service from 2013-16, and my work has been featured in 201 magazine, NY Spaces, NJ Home & Design and Safavieh Style. I am also an Allied member of the ASID. Can you describe your business and your focus on customer service? My work ranges from estate-caliber homes to tiny little powder rooms. I am all about good design on any budget. When working, I have a calm demeanor, a “let’s all take a deep breath” approach. I want my clients to be happy; it’s the most important thing in the world to me. I never settle and I don’t rush. And I always tell my clients “It’s not my house, it’s your house.” The more involved a client is in the design process, the better; things come out better when there’s collaboration. Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about you or your design firm? I think that good design improves the quality of your life. ■

I seek out creative conversations wherever I go. Traveling the globe and tracking the trends this season, I have been inspired by Color, Materials, Form and Decoration in their myriad expressions. As the alphabet advances, not necessarily in order, basic tenants emerge. Craftsmanship creates context, heightened by the touch of a hand, manipulated by millennia of know-how, materials matter. Social responsibility promotes message over story, the how, who and why of the products we create that will enhance our experiences and

add warmth to our world. Colors are more complex to reflect the times in which we live and define our world through hue and tone. Rarely are they basic or boring, and clashing is so contemporary. Innovative and imaginative forms put the “Fun” in functional. We are looking at things a bit differently these days. Silhouettes are shaped with an awry eye. Our focus on the world’s waters creates a canvas of cool and composed colors and tranquil tones that refresh and renew. Flora flourishes in fantasy, yielding extra large expressions that are big, bold and beautiful. This season’s trends are on track to tantalize.

Signs of an artistic life were evident early in Eden’s life; she always painted and drew detailed artwork, which led her to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Shortly after graduating, she walked by a glass store in the garment district and was drawn inside by the vibrant colors. That last-minute impulse kick-started her future career. “I made little tile boards and promoted them as a wall covering to my fashion clients. It evolved into a teeny little studio in the garment district.” After 9/11, her husband’s job on Wall Street was on hold after his office was destroyed, so he started helping out and soon became an integral part of the business. “He is the brains of the operation,” Eden says. “We do art on glass, I don’t consider it tile. Each piece is handcrafted.” Fast forward to the present-day, and it’s easy to see why Eden’s talent in glass has given her a winning reputation. She won the Best in Show, textile category, for her booth at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair held in New York’s Jacob Javits Center in May. She was also honored to exhibit at Art Basel in Miami last December, when all of her new works at Red Dot Art Fair were sold. Followers of her Instagram account are treated to a rainbow-hued scroll of cleverly-fabricated glass eye candy. “We do art on glass, I don’t consider it tile,” Eden says. “Each piece is handcrafted. It’s all about the quality and the details and making something beautiful, not fast and cheap. Everything we make is all done by hand and it needs to be perfect.” Leading interior designers and architects actively seek Eden out for her trendy designs which have been featured in magazines like Architectural Digest, Interior Design, Architectural Record, Metropolitan Home, New York Cottages and Gardens, and Elle Decor. Recent installations included the iconic Christmas windows at Bloomingdale’s department store in Manhattan, Eden says. “In December we had an underwater theme with a huge chandelier made in gold that moved. It won third place of all the holiday windows in New York City; I didn’t even know there was such a contest!” Eden was also featured in Bloomingdale’s Fashion Week windows, while another project showcased her work in the Christopher Kennedy Compound, the Modernism Week Show House 2017, a lively Palm Springs house tour that took place in February. 90

Elegant New Residences in Southampton from Paramount Custom Homes by Gwen Donovan Photography by: Bellport Branding

The Fields is a Hamptons-inspired collection of 28 new luxury homes situated minutes from Southampton Village and Southampton’s beautiful ocean beaches. Over the past two decades, Joe Criscuolo and Bill Locantro of Paramount Custom Homes have built hundreds of quality homes across Long Island. These accomplished builders have a strong passion for their business and take pride in constructing homes created with precise craftsmanship. Each residence at The Fields is skillfully made using high-caliber design elements and plumbing fixtures from Blackman. In fact, the homes here are so innovative that two models are included in the Hampton Designer Showhouse 2017, a fundraiser for Southampton Hospital taking place from July 23 to September 4.

Occupancies will begin in July and landscaping is by Marders in Bridgehampton.

What makes this community different? “Each and every one of these houses is a custom home,” Joe Criscuolo says. “Quality is paramount to us, and we are proud to produce very high-end homes.” Customization is readily available at The Fields, he adds. “Whatever the homebuyer’s mind can think of and whatever their heart desires, we will provide.” Stressing that The Fields is not just a place to call home, it’s a true destination,

Criscuolo details the on-site features. “The 12-acre park we created is particularly notable; it’s like our own Central Park with tennis and sports courts, and a half-mile walking and jogging trail that goes around the perimeter of The Fields. It’s a nice extension to everyone’s home. Each home comes with a private gunite pool, and the park lets you take off your shoes and rub your feet in the grass.”

buyers can expect at The Fields, according to Criscuolo. “These are not generic homes; they are all customizable when you work with our interior designer Greg McKenzie or our architect, Todd Nagy.” This is an important aspect of The Fields that sets it apart from other developments. “The 28 homes can be built from our customers’ own plans or they can choose from our customizable models.”

THE BEACHCOMBER 6,025 +/- sq. ft. 7 Bedrooms 6 Baths 2 Half

Criscuolo is proud of Paramount Custom Homes’ upscale approach to the building process. “What other builders call options, we call standard. We have custom kitchens with two-inch mitered stone countertops, custom kitchen cabinets, all trim custommade, and all bath vanities custom-made. Kitchen appliances from Sub-Zero and Wolf are also standard features. We offer a level of design normally seen in much more expensive homes. We worked rigorously to make the houses stand out. All tile areas and baths have a lot of marble and high-end tile. And Blackman provided all our plumbing fixtures.”

When homebuyers want specific design options, Bill Locantro says they are easily included. “Customers are looking at options like built-in wine cellars on the lower level or in the dining room, spas, saunas, and converting outdoor space to indoor space,” he notes. “We want to be flexible by design, whether our home buyers want to add a room or change a roofline.” Locantro also emphasized the value of the initial price points at The Fields. “The entry price is under market right now, and as we sell these homes, we anticipate that the prices will go up.”

Greg McKenzie, Designer of Record for The Fields, brings his vast experience as an interior designer in the East End and beyond to this project. There are no cookie-cutter looks in these eight different houses that come with everything from soup to nuts that you need, plus a private swimming pool. McKenzie brings his celebrated transitional style to every part of the floor plan. “Interiors include coffered ceilings, white oak

floors, custom designed tilework, and lots of options to make the homes here very special,” he says. “Homebuyers can work with me to customize their house, it’s an option the builder is offering.” The generous builder’s allowance for interiors includes items like tile, custom kitchen cabinetry from Ciuffo Cabinetry of Deer Park, plumbing projects and appliances. “Blackman was very involved in the bathrooms, lighting, fixtures and faucets and the exterior lighting. They are a fantastic source for Paramount Custom Homes,” McKenzie notes. “It’s very important for us to have a great relationship with Blackman, especially with all the things we need to create custom homes.”

Smart design makes the layouts comfortable and livable, McKenzie says. “The homes at The Fields are very much about today’s living, incorporating lifestyle needs. The floor plans are open, airy and bright. The lower level can be finished with a gym, home theater, different flooring and a full bath; a powder room is already included. The true luxury of this new community is the fact that you can really make the house your own, all plans can be different, and there are a lot of options for every room.” A sought-after destination, Southampton is one of the most desirable resort areas on the East Coast, McKenzie observes. “The Fields is in a fantastic location; it’s about a two-and-a-half hour drive from New York City, and is convenient to the village of Southampton and the ocean beaches. Southampton Village has great shopping on Jobs Lane and Main Street at J. McLaughlin, Brooks Brothers, London Jewelers and restaurants like Le Charlot and 75 Main. It’s just fantastic to be so close to everything offered there.” Pete Criscuolo, Project Manager of The Fields, says quick closings are available at The Fields for buyers who act quickly. “We

98

have two immediate occupancy homes; Lot 22 has the Dunemere and Lot 18, the Maidstone. These two homes give a good feel of what’s included, and they are ready right now, just in time to enjoy this summer.” Weekend visitors will appreciate a location that’s easy to reach, Crisculo notes. “The beauty of The Fields is its position geographically. You don’t get caught in traffic once you get off Sunrise Highway. We are just south of the highway so it’s just a short distance from there and you’re home.” He adds that The Fields’ location is a sweet spot for day trips to Bridgehampton, Wainscott, Water Mill, Sag Harbor or even Montauk at the very end of Long Island. Comparative values for a home of this caliber would be priced at around $4.85 million, Crisculo says. “We can offer a discounted rate since we are completing 28 homes and passing those savings onto the consumer. In the Hamptons, this is a great foot-in-the-door opportunity whether it’s your first or last home. We are happy to be able to offer this type of a value and extend our reach to a wider range of home buyers.” ■

Hampton Designer Showhouse 2017 Includes Two Models at The Fields Two homes at The Fields—the Beachcomber and Linden models-- are included in The Hampton Designer Showhouse 2017, a fundraiser for Southampton Hospital. Both models are open daily from July 23 to September 4. “We’re excited for this year’s Hampton Designer Showhouse,” said Tony Manning who is directing the event. “These are beautiful houses with great architectural details and rooms, and Paramount Custom Homes is great to work with. We’re sure their homes are going to be a spectacular addition to the Showhouse.” Joe Criscuolo echoed that thought, adding “We are one of the premier builders in the Hamptons and it’s a great honor for us to be included in The Hampton Designer Showhouse. We had one home in the Showhouse in 2014, and this year we’ll have two. The two homes will be open side by side; it’s the first time that’s ever been done at the Showhouse.” Participants can expect to be dazzled by rooms decorated in styles ranging from classic to modern themes. “Noted designers each take a room in each house, whether it’s a bedroom, great room or home theater, so there will be a palette of many different designers, about 30 or 40 are involved,” Criscuolo said. The models are both introduced by a stone front porch opening to a double-height foyer. Tucked under ten-foot ceilings, gathering spaces on the main floor include a fireside great room, formal dining room, and center island kitchen customized with mitered stone countertops, appliances from Sub-Zero, Wolf and Asko, custom cabinets from Ciuffo Cabinetry and access to a dining patio. A secondary master suite, powder room, mudroom, attached two-car garage and covered rear stone porch with outdoor fireplace complete the first floor. Upstairs, the luxurious feeling continues in a master suite designed with a custom bath, walk-in closet and private mahogany terrace overlooking the pool and grounds. Three additional en suite bedrooms with generous baths and walk-in closets are also on this level. The finished lower level has ten-foot ceilings and offers a variety of flexible gathering areas. Outdoors, professionally landscaped grounds contain a 20-by-40-foot gunite pool with stone patio. “When you walk into these homes, you really can feel the value that you get for that price point,” Joe Criscuolo said. Initial offerings at The Fields range from $3.5 to $3.8 million. ■

She was instrumental in designing the fresh, colorful look at Rossella Rago’s outdoor cooking event in Blackman’s Southampton Showroom this spring, and she shares her advice about how to make warm weather gatherings fun, easy and memorable.

Party Planning 101: Creating an Al Fresco Get-Together With so many occasions happening this season, make the most of the warm weather and plan an outdoor soiree that will leave guests wondering how much time you spent planning. By Maryla Colandrea Photography by: Art of Perfection Events

B

y following our quick and easy planning tips you will be well on your way to being crowned the Hostess with the Mostest. Planning an outdoor soiree shouldn’t be stressful or time consuming. Approach each party as an artist and use objects found randomly around your home, at a local farmers market or vintage store.

What’s the Feeling? You should begin your planning process by asking yourself “How do I want this party to feel?” All of my designs, whether I am planning a lavish al fresco wedding in Italy or a backyard pizza party in the United States, begin with the idea of a feeling and the use of memorable objects that are dear to me or to my clients. When I plan a party I want my guests to leave remembering the event for its hospitality and uniqueness.

Maryla’s Top 10 Hints for Planning an Outdoor Party ➀ Keep your budget in mind; you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a memorable party.

➁ Create a menu and have a plan for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

➂ Craft unique tablescapes and have enough comfortable seating; consider bringing furniture outside.

➃ If you are having a buffet, make sure you set up a few separate areas to encourage mingling.

➄ Check the weather and add a rain date to invitations.

➅ Your invitation should tell guests what shoes to wear and what the dress code is.

➆ Stow trash discreetly (l love using wicker laundry baskets that look pretty but serve a purpose.)

➇ For lighting that also beats the bugs, use citronella candles.

➈ A pile of cozy blankets or wearable pashminas are perfect for chilly nights. Set up a fire pit, too.

➉ Music...it always makes the party. Make a playlist ahead of time to set the mood.

Outdoor Styling Tips

Be a Hunter-Gatherer I gather interesting objects. I love using my amazing finds to design luxurious tablescapes. Grab interesting vases of all shapes and sizes, mix and match vintage and modern items and get creative. The more heights you use, the more texture a table has. Just be sure not to block your guests’ view.

Think of the Five Senses I have been using a lot of fruits and vegetables in my recent designs, so lemons and limes are my go-to for the summer. The yellow and green is a perfect palette that says refreshing. Plus, the smell of a fresh cut lemon is unbelievable. I love tossing cut lemons in a clear vase with water and adding some wild flowers that drape over the edge of the vase. I also use a lot of fresh herbs like basil and rosemary to bring an aroma to the setting. I pot these in tin vases, mason jars or tie them to my napkins. It brings color and nature together.

Cocktails & Mocktails Whatever the case may be, a signature drink is always a special addition to any party. Have a signature drink for the adults and a mocktail for the kids to enjoy. My recent tablescape included wine glasses filled with floating grapes in white wine. The idea is so simple, but guests will love eating the fruit after sipping their drink. Another signature favorite in the Italian culture is peaches in homemade red wine. So good!

Plan B Having your event outdoors is an amazing way to showcase your new outdoor kitchen or beautiful landscaping. Just remember plan ahead, especially with the weather. Always have a plan B. Tent, covering or rain date.

Enjoy! Remember to enjoy your own party and mingle with your guests. With the proper prior planning, your party can be just as much fun for you as it is for your guests. â–

The Perfect Blend of Taste and Nutrition

Nutrition on Demand Rachel Drori’s Innovative New Subscription Service Delivers Healthy, Ready-to-Blend Frozen Smoothies, Soups and Breakfast Bowls

By Gwen Donovan Photography by: Daily Harvest

T

he philosophy of Daily Harvest can be summed up as “Nutrition on Demand.” This popular new subscription service is joining the home-delivered, pre-packaged food movement and is a stand out for several reasons: frozen soups and ready-to-blend smoothies are created from healthy, organic ingredients; each product features superfoods with no added sugar or preservatives; and each is perfectly portioned and ready to blend or heat in a freezer-ready Daily Harvest cup. New to the company’s line-up are Activated Breakfast Bowls. These protein-rich overnight oats and chia parfaits use the same all-natural and organic methods as the soups and smoothies. nutritionists using produce picked at peak nutrition and flash frozen on the farm, so each item is as fresh and nutritious as items from your local farmer’s market. Rachel Drori, founder and CEO of this booming New York-based company, explains how her products make good nutrition easy and delicious. “Daily Harvest came from a personal need. I am an athlete who is wellversed in health and fitness. We all aspire to each a certain way, but life gets in the way,” Drori said. She used to spend a lot of time prepping smoothie ingredients for the week in her kitchen and stashing them in the freezer. When she noticed her husband (who she says “can’t butter toast”) preparing

New products unveiled this spring include a selection of Activated Breakfast Bowls: overnight oats and chia parfaits. “They are filled with whole foods and fruits. You just add liquid and it activates overnight in the refrigerator. It’s natural nutrition.” says Daily Harvest founder Rachel Drori.

a smoothie for himself using her pre-packaged bags of frozen ingredients every morning, she figured the idea had real business potential. Business potential is something Drori knows a lot about. Before officially launching Daily Harvest in 2016, she had a strong background in marketing and branding. This graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University business school started her career at the Four Seasons Hotel and also worked for American Express and Gilt Groupe. Her parents are both entrepreneurs who told her “If you have a good idea, do it,” so she used that same spirit to start her own company. From humble beginnings, Drori saw the untapped potential of a health-oriented food delivery service. “I started in a commercial kitchen in Long Island City. I bagged up all the ingredients and started delivering them all over New York City in my car. I realized then that this was a real opportunity.” Today, Daily Harvest is headquartered in New York’s Flatiron district and deliveries are shipped around the country. “Every city has its own favorite smoothie flavor,” she said. “In New York, the mint chipper (mint + cacao) is our top seller, and other parts of the country really like our acai cherry or chocolate avocado smoothies.” At home, her two-year old son loves the carrot and chia smoothie, which Drori says tastes like carrot cake. It includes ingredients like organic sweet potatoes, dates, bananas, carrots, chia seeds, ginger and vanilla bean. Her personal favorite is blueberry hemp which has the same flavor profiles as a slice of blueberry pie. Organic Blueberries, spinach, kale, raw walnuts, hemp protein and golden figs combine in this tasty purple-toned smoothie.

Daily Harvest takes great pride in delivering the most nutritionally-dense products. “A lot of people don’t realize this, but the produce we buy at the grocery store can be pretty old,” Drori says. “An apple can be picked up to a year and a half before it appears on the shelf, and blueberries can be weeks and weeks old. Many fruits are picked when they are green and allowed to ripen off the vine. Unfortunately, the nutrient profile degrades over time. We pick our fruits and vegetables at their nutritional peak in order to develop their full flavor and nutrient content.” The produce is frozen immediately on the farm, ensuring its freshness and reinforcing the company’s promise of “Superfoods. Super Fast.” Smoothie flavors include conventional combinations like strawberry and peach, cold brew coffee and almond, or watermelon and cucumber, while others blend mango and camu or pineapple and matcha for a more adventurous flavor profile. Drori says plain or coconut water go into the mix, noting that substituting water for almond or coconut milk results in a creamier taste. “What’s great about our products is that they are right in line

f you haven’t heard of Rossella Rago, you will. This busy chef, author, YouTube star and television personality hosts an online cooking show with her grandmother, the popular food webisode series called Cooking with Nonna, which is also the name of her newly-released cookbook. Flavorful Summertime Recipes from Rossella Rago

Rossella Rago shared three of her favorite recipes for warm weather get-togethers, each filled with flavor for an authentic taste of Italy.

Botticelli Fusilli Pasta Salad with Roasted Red Peppers and Artichokes This light and refreshing pasta salad is perfect for summertime entertaining and is easily put together with a selection of items available from Botticelli.

Prep time 5 min

Cook Time: 10

4 servings

➀ For the Dressing:

- 1/4 Cup Botticelli Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Zest and Juice of 2 Lemons - 1/4 Cup Grated Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese - 2 Tablespoons Botticelli Red Wine Vinegar - 2 Tablespoons Fresh Parsley, chopped Salt and Fresh Black Pepper as desired

➁ For the Pasta Salad:

- 1 Pound Botticelli Fusilli Pasta - 1-12 ounce jar Botticelli Fire Roasted Red Peppers, drained - 1-18 ounce jar Marinated Artichokes, drained - 1 Pound Bocconcini or Perline Mozzarella

➂ To make the dressing:

In a small mixing bowl combine the oil, zest, juice, vinegar, parsley, salt and pepper. Mix well. Set aside. Bring a large pot of generously salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and run under cold running water to stop the cooking. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the peppers, artichokes and mozzarella to the bowl. Pour the dressing on top and toss well.

Blackman at Home

The decision to start a cooking show wasn’t immediately evident to Rago. “I was living with my grandmother and shared a bedroom with her while I was attending St. John’s University. I cooked with her every day, and I just took it for granted that’s what every family does. Everybody on our block in Bensonhurst did that.” Although she was in college, she was also becoming a star student in Nonna’s Brooklyn basement culinary school. After graduating with a B.A. degree in Italian literature from St. John’s, she pursued a career in education. “Like most Italian girls from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, I was studying to become an Italian teacher,” Rago said.

When teaching didn’t seem like the right fit, her father sat her down and asked her what she wanted to do with her life. She said she wanted to host a cooking show. Her father went out and bought the domain name for Cooking with Nonna and they began filming webisodes to post on YouTube. “Ten years later, I am in a new niche career,” Rago laughs. “It takes ten years to be an overnight success.” She has built a powerful social media presence and, with the help of her manager father, she has a brand new cookbook. In fact, one of her 650,000 Facebook followers was a book editor who approached Rago about creating a cookbook. That led to Cooking With Nonna being published in early 2017.

Nonna Giuseppa Valenti Cocchiola’s Grilled Swordfish with Tomatoes and Olives In Sicily, you will almost always find swordfish on the menu at any restaurant. My favorite way to cook this meaty fish is on the grill, and Nonna Giuseppa whips up a quick and tasty version featuring all the flavors of Sicily; it’s perfect for summertime cooking.

Prep time 5 min

Cook Time: 33 min

4 servings

➀ Ingredients:

- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing - 3 cloves garlic, crushed - 1 cup (150 g) cherry tomatoes, halved - Dash salt, plus more to taste - ¼ cup (60 ml) dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc - ¼ cup (60 ml) water - Zest of 1 lemon - ½ cup (96 g) pitted green olives - ¼ cup (48 g) pitted Gaeta or Kalamata olives - ½ teaspoon dried oregano - ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes - 2 tablespoons (8 g) coarsely chopped fennel sprigs - Black pepper, to taste - 4 swordfish fillets (6 to 7 ounces, or 170 to 198 g, each), 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick

➁ Instructions:

114

A. Heat the olive oil in a medium heavybottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and a dash of salt, and cook and stir until the tomatoes begin to break down, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the wine and water and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. B. Add the lemon zest, olives, oregano, red pepper flakes, and fennel sprigs, and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper. Remove from the heat and set aside. C. Season the swordfish with salt and black pepper on both sides. D. Brush a two-burner grill pan with olive oil and place over high heat. Wait for the grill to get very hot and then add the swordfish fillets, 2 at a time. Grill for 4 to 5 minutes per side, until you have nice visible grill marks. E. Spoon the sauce over each fillet and serve immediately.

“The Cooking With Nonna cookbook is like the love child of our YouTube series,” she explains. “It shows you how to make fresh pasta by hand, which is very accessible when you use a stand-up mixer. I love all the recipes in the book, which also has desserts. I just love cooking and entertaining.” Collecting regional Italian recipes was a happy challenge for Rago. “Cooking with Nonna has 110 recipes submitted by 25 grandmothers who also share their life stories,” she said. “I wanted to include recipes from different regions of Italy, so it was like a treasure hunt to find them.” Some of the grandmothers are relatives or family friends, and all of them feel like movie stars when they go to book signings with Rago. “They are in their 60s, 70s and 80s, and this is so exciting for them and for me. I have truly learned from them that women have no expiration date.” Presenting live cooking demonstrations was completely different than filming them for her webisodes, Rago said. “It was a thrill for everyone once we started promoting the cookbook in front of an audience. When

we do our show on the internet, you see the number of people who have viewed it, but not the actual people. When you see them in person and see how moved they are by the cooking, it’s a powerful moment.” A second cookbook is already in the works, and this one will be all about holiday recipes. “It’s going to be a massive cookbook, there are so many traditional recipes, holidays are a big deal, and every Sunday is a holiday for Italian people.” Summertime entertaining offers a chance to create lighter fare, Rago says, such as Sicilian style swordfish on the grill, grilled octopus, pan-roasted artichokes, pizza made in an outdoor oven, and a collection of specialty recipes from Botticelli. “Botticelli was an important part of my recipe-tasting process when I was putting the cookbook together. I had to test 100 recipes in 40 days, and they sent over all the olive oil, tomatoes and other ingredients to help me out.” In addition to writing, promoting her book and making special appearances on shows like Good Morning America with assorted Nonnas, Rago also leads culinary tours in

Italy. “It is a ton of fun. We come together as strangers and we leave as family. It is such a great experience to see all these people bond over food.” Rago usually organizes the tours in September and focuses on the region of Puglia in southern Italy, where her family is from originally. Describing what she calls “a true Italian experience,” the tour

includes non-touristy events like a five-hour lunch complete with lots of red wine, viewing a religious procession at the Virgin Mary Festival, or a chat with a local fisherman, restaurant owner or villager. While cooking is an integral part of Rago’s life and livelihood, she also gets genuine

joy from sharing it with others. “When I give cooking demonstrations, I see people in the audience smiling and nodding their heads. They will come up to me later with tears in their eyes and say ‘My grandma made that dish the exact same way,’ so it’s a lot of nostalgia for them. And for me, it’s very meaningful work.” ■

Nonna Michelina Gagliardo’s pizza with cheese, onions, and bread: Faccia di Vecchia More than 60 years ago, a cousin of Nonna Michelina opened the restaurant U Zu Caliddu in Sicily and started serving the now-famous faccia di vecchia. This pizza gets its name from its irregular shape, which represents an old woman’s face. Michelina traditionally flavors hers with onions, Pecorino Romano cheese, and primo sale, a semisoft sheep’s milk cheese, which she tosses together with day-old bread soaked in an oregano-rich tomato sauce. If you have a hard time finding the primo sale, Michelina suggests substituting some sharp provolone. Please note that the dough has to be made 24 hours in advance, so plan accordingly.

➂ Instructions:

Prep time 20 min

Cook Time: 4 15 min Mini Pizzas

Note: Dough requires 24 hours of refrigeration

➀ Dough:

- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sugar - 2 tablespoons (30 ml) extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing - 1 packet (¼ ounce, or 7 g) active dry yeast - ¾ cup (180 ml) water - 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting - 1 teaspoon salt

➁ Filling:

- 2 cups day-old Italian bread, crusts removed and broken into 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes - 1 can (28 ounces, or 794 g) crushed tomatoes - ½ cup ½-inch (13 mm) cubes primo sale or provolone cheese - ½ cup ½-inch (13 mm) cubes Pecorino Romano cheese - 1 small onion, cut into ¼-inch (6 mm) dice - ¼ cup (60 ml) extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling - 1 tablespoon (15 ml) dried oregano - Salt, to taste

A. To make the dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, combine the sugar, olive oil, yeast, and water. Let stand until the yeast is dissolved, 5 to 8 minutes. B. In another mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. With the mixer running on low speed, slowly add the flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a smooth, supple dough forms, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer the dough to a bowl brushed with olive oil. Brush the ball of dough with more oil. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 24 hours. C. To make the filling: Place the bread cubes in a large bowl. Add the tomatoes and mix well, with your hands if you like. D. Add the cheeses, onion, olive oil, and oregano. Season with salt. Mix all the ingredients well. Set aside. E. To make the pizza: Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (250 degrees C) with a pizza stone inside. F. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 2 to 3 minutes. Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces. G. Flour a countertop and stretch the dough into an oblong shape or any shape that you like. H. Spread about ¾ cup of filling onto the pizza, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border. Drizzle with some olive oil, slide the pizza onto the pizza stone, and bake for 14 to 15 minutes, or until the outer crust is golden. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.

Home Cooling

Keeping Things Chill Stay cool this summer with a selection of air conditioning options for any space in the home. By Gwen Donovan

A

fter a sweltering hot summer day, there’s nothing better than coming home to cool, refreshing air conditioning.

Justin Renna, Division Manager of HVAC at Blackman, shares his thoughts about some new and innovative cooling products available on the showroom floor. With many years of expertise in the industry, he explains how different options can enhance every room. Central air conditioning is a leading choice for its ability to cool a home simply by adjusting the thermostat. Blackman carries the Ruud product line, known for their reliability and energy-saving features. “We have everything from basic to super high efficiency Ruud systems,” Renna says. “The higher the efficiency, the lower your electric bill will be.”

Blackman at Home

Whether you need to install a new central air conditioning system or upgrade your current system, homeowners can ask a Blackman sales representative for names of qualified contractors to do the job. “Blackman can recommend a contractor who will offer better service and better warranties. We work with dealers and contractors who are certified by the manufacturer,” Renna notes. When central air conditioning isn’t an option-- due to a home being older or a new room addition that doesn’t require an entire system-- ductless air conditioners are a great choice, Renna says.

Home Cooling

“Ductless systems are good for older homes but they also work well in places you might not think of, like outdoor kitchens that are actually enclosed in a house-like environment, or garages. Some homeowners want a climate controlled environment for their car collections, and others have a small office built into their garage, so a ductless unit is perfect for those spaces.” He says these systems are also are ideal in parts of the home that get a lot of natural light like sun rooms or enclosed porches. Blackman carries Fujitsu ductless air conditioning units which can be recessed or mounted on the wall, floor or ceiling. “You can have anything from a single zone to eight zones on a basic unit that is set up outside your home,” Renna says. “You only need a two-and-a-half inch hole for the installation process, so there’s not a lot of construction involved.” These easy-to-install units can replace window, portable and wall units, which give rooms a better design aesthetic and lessens noise, he adds. “These Fujitsu units are sleek, pretty and quiet. All you hear is the air blowing, there’s no rumbling or vibrations that you typically find in wall unit air conditioners.” To control your air conditioning remotely, Renna suggests upgrading your thermostat with one from Honeywell’s Lyric line. “These are really innovative thermostats that allow you to make your home a Smart Home. The Lyric thermostats allow you to control the temperature of your home as well as your humidifier, air cleaner and even your door bell.” For more information about central air conditioning systems, visit a Blackman showroom. The expert staff can help you discover options for your home and budget, share information about energy efficiency features, and develop a plan to make this summer your coolest one ever. ■

The Lyric Round™ Wi-Fi Thermostat by Honeywell.

Still not convinced? Consider these points: ➊ Central air systems improve indoor air quality by filtering out allergens like dust, pollen and pet dander, making your home’s environment significantly healthier. ➋ “It’s not the heat it’s the humidity” problem solved since central air reduces humidity. ➌ Since the central air conditioning mechanics (fan, compressor and condenser) are located outside, there is little or no interior noise. ➍ Unlike window air conditioners, central air conditioning won’t affect your home’s curb appeal. ➎ You will never have to install or remove window air conditioners as the seasons change. ➏ When it’s time to sell your home, air conditioning adds to the value and is a feature buyers seek. ➐ Central air systems are easily operated, a flick of the switch is all it takes to cool your entire home.
