For a second successive year, Blackpool Sixth students and staff are celebrating our best ever set of A level and BTEC level 3 results. The overall pass rate rose to 99.4% and the number of students receiving the highest possible grades has increased significantly once again. Nearly 70% of our students gained a high grade and over 40% gained an A*/A or a Distinction*.

Blackpool Sixth Principal, Jill Gray, commented, “This a wonderful set of results and represents a huge amount of hard work by students and staff. Results like these mean that our students will be able to progress to the next stage with a brilliant platform for future success. We are hugely proud of their achievements.�

High Flyers

Amy Hughes

Oxbridge bound

Amy Hughes, formerly of Montgomery High School, achieved A*s in English language and English literature and an A in modern history. She is going to the University of Cambridge to study education with English. After university Amy plans to be an A level teacher.

Lottie Candy and Jack Burrell (right), who both took ‘gap years’ after completing their A levels last year will progress to Oxbridge studies. Lottie, a former AKS student, will read fine art at St. Edmund’s Hall, Oxford and Jack will read law at Peterhouse College, Cambridge.

Grace Cook, a former Kirkham Grammar School pupil, accepted her offer from New College, Oxford to study French. Grace received A grades across the board in modern history, French and English literature A levels. “The atmosphere of inclusion & friendliness has made Blackpool Sixth feel like a natural bridge between high school and university. You are treated as an adult and supported every step of the way. A fantastic couple of years of my life that I will remember fondly!”

Former Saint Aidan’s Church of England High School pupil Ben Boyd is off to Durham University in September to take a MPhys degree after achieving amazing A* A* A* A results in maths, further maths, physics and computing. “I have really enjoyed the independent learning and free time at Blackpool Sixth that has allowed me to control what work I do and how I do it.”

A level success Former Unity Academy student Ian Hathaway gained two A* grades in maths and further maths and an A in physics. Ian is going to Warwick University to study maths.

Bethany Barker

Former Hodgson Academy pupil Bethany Barker achieved As in modern history, classical civilisation and English literature. She is heading to Edinburgh University to study for a degree in Russian studies and history. Bethany would like to have a writing career, initially in political journalism. She plans to write a book on the social and political changes in Russia.

Economic Success

Former St Mary’s Catholic Academy student Cody Phan is studying economics in September at The University of Leeds thanks to his A level results. Cody gained A*s in economics and maths and a B in biology. “I have really enjoyed the freedom to learn how I learn best. Blackpool Sixth is the perfect place to strive in your studies.”

Bethany said “I'm so happy with my results and Blackpool Sixth gave me the support and motivation I needed to achieve them. It’s been great to choose from a wide range of subjects and to engage with amazing teachers who are truly passionate about their subjects.”

Will Burrell formerly of Saint Aidan’s Church of England High School gained two A* grades in maths with mechanics and physics and an A in chemistry. Will is taking a gap year before going on to study natural sciences at university.

Emily Parkinson-Swift formerly of Kirkham Grammar School has secured a prestigious Aerospace Engineering apprenticeship at BAe Systems with her Distinction* grade in Triple BTEC Engineering.

Fiona Hockey (left) formerly of Montgomery High School is off to Cardiff Metropolitan University in September to study sport and physical education. Fiona gained a Triple Distinction* in her BTEC Sport - Performance & Excellence course.

Michael Spence (left) , formerly of Montgomery High School, gained a Distinction* in BTEC Business and a Double Distinction* in BTEC Music. Michael is off to The BIMM Institute to study professional musicianship.

Lauren Murray has gone straight into employment with British Airways as mixed fleet cabin crew. The former Lytham St Anne’s Technology & Performing Arts College student received a Double Distinction* in her BTEC Travel and Tourism course and a B in A level Geography.

Building futures:

Former Cardinal Allen student Kasha Hempton-Thomas will read Korean studies at Sheffield University. Kasha got a Triple Distinction* in her BTEC Travel and Tourism.

Former St George’s School pupil and Blackpool Sixth student ambassador Josh Latham is pursuing his dream of becoming a police officer by studying policing at Edge Hill University. Josh received a Triple Distinction* in his BTEC Public Services course.

Ashleigh Wild was thrilled with her A* in A Level Law. Ashleigh, formerly of Hodgson Academy, also gained Bs in A level Psychology and A level English Language. Ashleigh is going to study law at Lancaster University.

Conal Land is looking forward Former Highfield High School to studying law at pupil Natasha Boyd is Newcastle University. Former continuing her passion for law at Baines School pupil Conal got Lancaster University where she an A* in his law A level as will study law and criminology. well as Bs in A level Natasha gained an A* in A level Modern History and A level Law as well as an A in A level English Language. Former Highfield Humanities College pupil Connor Dunleavy celebrated a run of straight As in his A levels. Connor gained A grades in PE, classical civillisation and sociology. Connor is joining Birmingham University to study sport and exercise science with the hope of becoming a physiotherapist when he graduates.

Friends Kia Naylor, Chris Magrane and Alex Smith were all celebrating receiving A grades in their A level results. Former St George’s School pupil Kia gained an A in her photography A level, whilst Alex Smith also from St George’s was celebrating his A in A level Law and will study law at Manchester Metropolitan University. 2 Plus graduate success

Jamie-Lee Bennison joined Blackpool Sixth on the “new” 2 Plus programme in 2013 and has just completed her upper sixth year. The one-year 2 Plus programme enables students to boost their qualifications before embarking on an A level or BTEC course. Jamie-Lee formerly of Highfield Humanities College gained a Triple Distinction* in BTEC Travel and Tourism and has accepted an offer from British Airways London City Airport as cabin crew.

Former Arnold King Edward School pupil Kathy Clarke gained A grades in music and theatre studies and a B in maths. Kathy, who won the A Level Drama and Theatre Studies award at our student awards, will go on to study music at Manchester University.

Sam Benson formerly of Highfield Humanities College is going to The BIMM Institute to study professional musicianship. Sam won the student award for BTEC Music at our 2016 student awards. Sam gained a Triple Distinction* in BTEC Music.

Sophie Pusey, who won our 2016 ‘dancer of the year’ award, is continuing her passion for dance studying dance performance at Middlesex University. Sophie, formerly of Aspire Academy, got a Distinction* in BTEC Performing Arts and a Double distinction* in BTEC Music.

Rebecca, formerly from Highfield Humanities College, is going on to study fashion promotion at The University of Central Lancashire. Former Baines School pupil, Katie Cross, will be studying editorial and advertising photography at The University of Gloucestershire. Olivia Greenwood, formerly of Hodgson Academy, gained A grades in graphic design, photography and English language. Olivia is going on to study English language and linguistics at Leeds University.
