Port Alberni’s two high schools are a stark contrast to one another on a warm Monday afternoon. A long row of cars lines the outside of the new school on Roger Street as more than 100 workers race to finish the inside and outside of the school. Several of the workers are Port Alberni residents, some of whom graduated from Alberni District Secondary School within the last three years. Classrooms in one wing at the new school have freshly waxed floors and are now filled with desks. Equipment is slowly being moved into the metal, wood and auto shops as well. Rooms in a second wing are still being worked on and should be ready to be moved into shortly. Across town on Burde Street, an eerie quiet—different from other summer holidays—hangs over the old high school. The school has the feel of a mausoleum. Even the smell is different, old wood having been exposed when parts of the school were taken apart. Most classrooms are empty, boxes and chairs clutter the halls and the gym has become the de facto to clearing house for desks and tables to be moved to the new school. “We’re on schedule for September. going to be tight but it’s supposed to be,” said ADSS viceprincipal Ron Behnke. Actual moving of material from the old to the new school started on June 18 after school let out for exams. Inside the nearly finished academic wing of the new high school, a shower of light illuminates the bright walls of the paper-lined hallways. Student lockers line the main hall, each half the size of the old ones and stacked one on top of the other. “They’re smaller than the old ones but are wider,” Behnke said. Teachers sorted, boxed and tagged goods to be moved in their classrooms before departing for the summer. Planning for the move started more than a year ago

with departmental inventory assessments. “There was over 50 years worth of stuff that had accumulated that had to be sorted through,” Behnke said. “Teachers and administrators inherited stuff from teachers and administrators who had inherited it from…” Nothing significant was unearthed and there were no valuable finds during the sorting. There was however one discovery of note. “We found a chalkboard with writing still on it when we took down the whiteboards,” Behnke said. “My first thought was ‘I wonder how old the writing is,’” he said. Moving meetings are held every morning and lists are produced of goods

ready to be moved to the new high school. The goods are loaded onto a pallet and hoisted by crane through holes that were cut in the wall at the side of the old high school. Desks are taken to the old ADSS gym where they are sorted, cleaned and given a new top if need be. More than 800 desks have to be moved to the new school, Behnke said. Books are being catalogued, boxed and moved from the book room at the library. “I don’t want to guess at how many. Let’s not go there,” Behnke chortled. Material is being moved first into the upper floors then into the lower floors, Behnke said. “Basically we’re pulling out in the order that the new school is finished,” he said. Teachers’ classrooms have already been assigned, their names affixed

to the doors. The rooms are brightly lit with natural light from Roger Street. The floors have a certain feel to them as you walk, denoting their newness, and the room smells not unlike a new car. The walls are barren and waiting

It’s going to be tight...’ – Ron Behnke to be filled. “There’s whiteboards and other things still to come,” Behnke said. “The rooms just need that teacher’s personal touch.” Teachers will be at the school sometime in August to start organizing, he added. Classrooms are occupied in a hodgepodge fashion but there is a method

to the madness, Behnke said. “We move classes over as they are ready to be moved into at the new school, but that doesn’t mean they move in exact order.” Behnke is the coordinator of the big move and oversees a staff of more than 40. He got the nod, he says, because of his experience with moving logistics at AW Neill Middle School when it underwent renovations nearly a decade ago. The initiative is a delicate balancing act. “We don’t want too much stuff arriving all at once when it’s not ready to be received yet,” Behnke said. “ The shop equipment was a challenge to move because it had to be unplugged, disengaged, cleaned of grease and oil, Behnke said. “Then there was the sheer weight of the equipment, which hadn’t been touched

since it was all moved into the old school.” The next phase of the move is scheduled to start this week, School District 70 secretary-treasurer Jerry Linning said. “The office complex and music room will start on Friday. The gyms, library and theatre are going to be ready soon as well.” The admin offices will be moved last from the old school in mid-August once the phones, computer hookup and other electrical equipment are ready for them on Roger Street. Work on the back field starts on Wednesday and landscaping on the eastern front of the school will start soon as well, Linning said. “We haven’t wound down yet. There’s still a lot of work to be done,” Linning said. “But the last wave of occupancy should be starting soon.”

A promising new partnership between the Port Alberni RCMP and School District 70 has been forged thanks to the successful completion of the inaugural RCMP Youth Camp, which concluded this week. Despite one minor accident that took place during training, all 12 teens came out of the experience with a new understanding of what policing is really about. The partners now hope to garner community support to fund the expansion of this program. on Thursday evening. RCMP Sgt. Dave Paddock praised the students, noting the core values they have studied this week—including honesty, integrity and compassion—can “take them a long way in life.” For four days the students experienced an RCMP depotlike camp. They

participated in a wide range of activities: from marching and running, to a session at a local firing range using shotguns, rifles and 9mm handguns, to chasing after a “suspect” with a police dog and his handler, to accompanying officers in squad cars responding to mock scenarios using

actors. It was during a self-defense exercise that one of the cadets suffered a minor injury. RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said the cadet is going to be fine, and was present to receive a certificate at the closing ceremony on Thursday. “Safety is always our first priority,” Allan explained. “But some of the training is physical and that is a reality of police work.” Overall, Allan said the camp was “a tremendous success. In the end, we could not have been happier with our candidates.” For some of these teens, this experience will solidify their interest in pursuing a future in law enforcement. “The best part was the scenarios the volunteers and

officers put together,” said 17-year-old Ezra Tsai. “It gave us a lot of hands-on experience.” Tsai hopes to one day become a crown prosecutor, or possibly work in the Witness Protection Program. RCMP Cpl. Dave Cusson said he hopes the cadets who are returning to school next year will become mentors to younger students in the city. “Not only can they promote the camp, but they can promote health and wellness,” he explained. “These are great messages.” Allan said local police want make the camp an annual event and possibly expand it, but added it is a costly venture. Funding for the inaugural camp came from the detachment out of the Community Policing budget.

Compliance Coal may be willing to “make a commitment” to help make a new road connecting Port Alberni with Comox possible, company president John Tapics said. Tapics made the announcement as part of his presentation to Port Alberni city council on Monday. Tapics started the presentation by reiterating information about coal transportation methods, facility logistics and benefits that he did at last month’s chamber of commerce meeting. The project is in stasis, and is waiting

to receive federal and provincial environmental impact assessments. Mayor John Douglas asked Tapics if he was aware of coal transportation issues, and specifically, if the company would assist the city in its efforts to get a new road connecting Comox with Alberni. The company “is committed to working with the city and the transportation planning committee,” Tapics said. Specifically, helping the committee look at financing a new road, he added. Tapics did not discuss in detail what he meant by “commitment” or what form it would take.

Local man dies in Alberta accident WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A Port Alberni man is dead after a hit and run east of Edmonton, Alta.

Roderick Kurtis Kaminsky, 49, was killed instantly June 30 after being run over by a westbound minivan in the town of Vermilion, which is 150 kilometres

southeast of Edmonton, RCMP Sgt. Michael McGinley said. Kaminsky travelled by bus from Port Alberni to Vermilion to visit family. The bus dropped him off at the entrance to the town at 2:30 a.m. According to two busloads of

passengers who witnessed the incident, Kaminsky crossed the eastbound lane of Highway 16 and Highway 870 without incident. But he was killed while crossing the west-bound lane. The minivan didn’t stop and fled the scene, McGinley said. Police are on the

Sunny weather brings fire risk Nuggts from late Barlee’s gold pan It’s getting hot out there. Finally, summer seems to have arrived. We wet coasters whine perennially about our typically dreary weather in June – now commonly, perhaps affectionately, known as ‘June-uary’ – but this year it turns out the complaining wasn’t without good reason. We were a full degree below average this year, which is significant, even if it doesn’t seem like much of a difference. We Islanders avoided the flood scares that put much of the province on alert last month. But now that the wet weather is apparently behind us, the sudden turnaround to a hot, dry summer brings a new set of challenges – more important than listening to moaning about the heat, instead of the cold and damp. In the forests and interface zones (where forest meets urban), the lengthened growing season has translated to plenty of undergrowth, which will become potential fire fuel as it dries out. More so than ever, fire officials are urging people to be wary of the risks for brush fires and wildfires. The risks could be compounded, fire prevention officials and firefighters worry, by a sense of complacency that might have grown out of the recent lengthy spate of grey. That’s concerning because it only takes a few hot days strung together to eliminate any residual moisture left in wooded areas from an extended damp stretch. ICTORIA – Shortly after word came of the death of B.C. historian and politician Bill Barlee, my wife searched through her seemingly endless trove of B.C. books and produced half a dozen of his original self-published quarterlies, known as Canada West magazine. The earliest one is Winter 1970, where the publisher’s note advises that subscription rates were increasing 20 cents per year to $2.95. Subscriptions were up to more than 1,600 and counter sales were increasing, but costs were also up and Barlee refused to accept either display advertising or U.S. subscriptions. The only colour pages in the issue are high-quality prints of four majestic paintings commissioned for the magazine. Irvine Adams’ scenes

of sacred aboriginal sites in the OkanaganSimilkameen include The Gateway to Inkameep, where Barlee remarks: “Today that stream which once teemed with redfish no longer surrenders its once-valued harvest and the perimeter of the desert is gradually being eroded by man’s questionable progress.” With the typography of Old West wanted posters, Barlee provided tightly sourced accounts of B.C.’s legends.

“Lost gold mine at Pitt Lake” analyzes and adds to earlier accounts that begin with an aboriginal miner known as Slumach, who would periodically arrive in New Westminster to squander a small fortune in gold, then disappear up the remote tidal lake. concluded that the area’s geology is wrong and the fabled gold-laden creek “probably does not exist.” A passion for prospecting runs through the magazines, and hints at Barlee’s aversion to treasure-seeking Americans. They overran B.C. in historic waves to take gold, and according to Nelson Star reporter Greg Nesteroff, Barlee believed they continued to loot Canadian heritage sites. Nesteroff was inspired by Barlee’s work, and traced his lonely mission to restore the ghost town of Sandon, “the mining capital of the Silvery Slocan.” Barlee bought a surviving block of buildings in an effort to make Sandon another Barkerville, but heavy snow collapsed them. As tourism minister, Barlee found money to build replicas, and construction began on three. But Barlee lost his Penticton seat to Bill Barisoff in the 1996 election, and today only half-built shells remain. Continued / 9

Port silent on road issue To the editor, On June 19, I sent a letter to the Mayor, ACRD and Port Alberni Port Authority CEO Brad Madelung asking them to, “provide to me, or post online or in hard copy at [their] offices, any and all documents created or discussed by the regional transportation committee or submitted to

the Ministry of Transportation... before July 1.” To their credit I’ve had prompt replies from the mayor, ACRD and connector advocate Bob Cole. Unfortunately, the port authority has all of the information the public should see and I have heard nothing from anyone there. So I ask the new port authority board and new CEO Zoran Knezevic: When will the proceedings of the transportation committee be published? When will the public be allowed to scrutinize this $100-million plan

that has already been submitted to government? And has the committee given up on trying to get Raven Coal Project off Hwy. 4? Surely no one thinks this highway could be built before the mine is slated to open in 2014? Only the railway could be rehabilitated fast enough to keep all of Raven’s trucks off Hwy. 4 and provide the port with immediate opportunities to take a load off the Port of Vancouver. The BCTF is hiring a social media co-ordinator at a yearly salary of $92,696 being funded by the teacher’s union dues. In comparison, a social media development manager job with the B.C. government is paid a salary of $58,511 per year and a communications job with the Universtiy of Victoria pays a salary of $53,399 per year. Barlee’s 1972 Canada West profile of the boomtown of Hedley would resonate in his career as an NDP MLA and cabinet minister in the 1990s. Hedley’s Nickel Plate and Mascot mines produced fortunes in

gold, silver and copper before they played out, and Barlee led the fight to preserve their history. Today you can tour the Mascot mine, a proud historical site with a spectacular climb up the rock face that serves as the Grouse Grind of the

B.C. desert. I first discovered Barlee as a reporter at the Kelowna Capital News in the early 1980s, when he did a weekly history show on CHBC television called Gold Trails and Ghost Towns. A bare-bones studio affair with tales

and artifacts displayed for host Mike Roberts, the show lasted a decade. Barlee didn’t lack courage, quitting a teaching career in Trail and Penticton in 1969 to start his magazine. On subscription fees and a few classified ads, he

Chickens and bees are about to become part of Port Alberni’s urban environment. City staff was directed at Monday’s Port Alberni City Council meeting to

include regulations allowing the keeping of honeybees and chickens on residential properties as part of an upcoming review of zoning bylaws. City Planner Scott Smith read out the results of an opinion survey.

There were 1,500 surveys sent out randomly in city utility bills. There were 553 responses representing three per cent of the Alberni Valley’s population. On honeybees, there were 541 responses. Sixty-eight per cent of respondents favoured keeping honeybees on residential lots while 32 per cent were

opposed. Fifty-three per cent of respondents noted that they thought there should be two to four hives allowed on a property, while 36 per cent indicated only one hive be allowed. Respondents reported that setbacks should be anywhere between zero to 30 metres. The comments

had been contracted to take photographs of Eagle With a Salmon, sculpted in 1986 by Fred Graham of New Zealand. The eagle is down at Harbour Quay on a 35-foot wooden column and was in bad condition—paint peeling, bare spots with green moss, and badly cracked. My wife Lesley contacted Scott Kenny, the director of Parks and Recreation at the city, and explained the situation as to the condition of the eagle and that the photographs would be in a book about the life and art of Fred Graham. It was cold with a strong, freezing wind coming in from the Alberni Inlet so that whenever I faced the sculpture, the wind would be in my face. But one must soldier on. I started off by shooting from the top floor of the clock tower, 80-200 f2.8 lens with the lens not the camera body screwed onto the tripod, electronic cable release attached. The details of

shot No. 1 are: RAW format, lens set at 200mm, ISO 400, aperture f10 (I stopped down the lens to f10 to preview the depth of field), shutter speed 1/400 of a second. Then I put the 2X extender on the Nikon between the monster lens and the camera body. Now I have automatically doubled the lens focal length so that the 80-200mm f2.8 lens becomes a 160-400mm f5.6 lens (I lose about two stops because of the extra glass in 2X extender). That would translate to a 240-600mm f5.6 lens on a 35mm film camera. Continued / 30

Blazers burn Abby in Division C final Fresh off of victory, the Alberni Valley Blazers strike a pose after their gold medal win against Abbotsford in the final match of the Division C Softball Championships on Sunday. More than 16 teams from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and Interior BC competed in the tournament last week in Port Alberni.

The minor league Alberni Valley Blazers mined gold last weekend. The Blazers won the Division C Provincial Championship with a 7-4 victory over the Abbotsford 96’s to take the final. The only game that the Blazers lost was a tight one against an earlier tilt Abbotsford,8-7, which forced them into a game against Langley, whom they beat 9-2. This brought them face to face against Abby again.

The Blazers took a comfortable lead then Abby came back to tie it up. Although the girls where tired and a few hurting they came back again to clinch the gold. The top finalists, AV Blazers, Abbotsford 96’s and bronze was Langley Bandits. One more successful Charity Golf Classic is in the books. Last Friday and Saturday saw 110 golfers tee up at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday on a really warm day proving that summer may be here at last. Special guests, acting as goodwill ambassadors included Mira Laurence, CTV Victoria, Jason Pires, CTV Vancouver, Joey Kenward of the Vancouver Canucks and former NHL referee Rob Shick. Thanks also go to the tournament committee who worked so hard to put all this together, co-chairs Joan Hall and Bruce MacDonald along with Tim Murphy, Ron Frolic, Bev Frolic, Kathy Toms, Diane Redlin, Wilma Walker, Clare Cauduro, Maggie Marshall, Sharien Williams, and Cheryl

It will be a couple of months before the final figure is available. Sunday, the Club Championship qualifying round got underway followed by the second day of qualifying on Monday. As soon as the club captain has the first round matches set they will be posted in the clubhouse. Closest to the pins on Sunday were Ken Fong, No. 2, Livio Tedesco collected $18 for the charity closest to the pin on No. 4, Don McGowan on No. 13, Fred Fredrickson on No. 17. Winner for closest to the pin for his second shot on No. 11 was Jules Gaudreault. The hidden hole went unclaimed.

Some of the nicest grandmothers I know are golfers and many of them were out in the sunshine today. Dorea Crawford, for one...great to see her out for the first time this year. Each player picked a number which corresponded with a pro whose score was added to our own... Low gross took the prize and in this case it was Anna Marie Krikke with a combined score of 160

points. Leona Fowler came in second with a combined score of 171. The Bea Kullman Cup and Evergreen Savings Credit Union Field Day was the focus on our game this morning. There were 20 participants in the field. Winners were determined by their low net achievement and Doreen Grant took it for the high handicappers while Anna Marie Krikke was successful for the low handicappers. Nine Hole Division: Jan Charlesworth had the best score to take the low gross position. Katy Lekich had a sizzling game to take the low net scoring.

The weather gods have finally listened to our pleas and gave us a beautiful summer nigh of golf. Summer is finally here so if the weather has been keeping you away, now is the time to dust the cobwebs off of those clubs and get out to the golf course. Sue Steinhaeur has been hot on the course, winning the “A” division with a score of 40. Runnerup Maryann McConnell beat out newcomer Ladonna Knutson in retrogression. Geri Shields won the low gross in the “B” division and Sandy Toombs was the runner up. Hidden hole prizes were donated by Tim Hortons, Val Inwards

and Hollies Golf Course. It is going to be a tight race on this year’s ringerboard. Sue Steinhaeur is currently in the lead, but with Maryann McConnell a close second. In the “B” division Geri Shields is in the lead, but Annette Ryles is sneaking up and wants that number one spot. Pat and Jackie and Hollies Golf Course are very generous sponsors of the Ty Watson House. Throughout the years they have sponsored many fund raisers and have raised a significant amount of money in which to donate to this very worthy cause. This year, the Wednesday night ladies golf group has set a very loft goal of raising $1,000 for this very deserving

Tsunami wraps season The Port Alberni Tsunami Swim Team ended another successful season with a well attended fun day and pot luck. The June 20th event was attended by almost all of its 75 swimmers along with their families. This year marked a season of growth, changes and personal achievements. The swim saw a strong increase in swimmers especially in the five to nine year old range. Children in this age

range can benefit from participating in the swim club by learning to become stronger and faster swimmers, working on endurance and also basic skills such as diving and swim strokes. Safety wise, being a strong confident swimmer is invaluable but it’s also great as a cross training sport since swimming is not a weight bearing sport. This year many of the clubs swimmers

competed in swim competitions and it resulted in lots of personal best times and proud moments, including four reaching provincial level time standards (Dezirae Henstridge, McKinley Sutton, Cassia Johnson, Claudia Noel). Though competing is completely optional many of our swimmers find that once they start attending a few meets practices become more interesting.

Centennial Inspirations is the title of a unique art exhibit showcasing local artists at the Rollin Art Centre. Inspiration was taken from 1912 photos the artists randomly selected. Each artist added their own style when creating this exhibit. Centennial Inspirations will run in the gallery from June 16 to Aug. 15. The gallery is located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Argyle Street. The facility is wheelchair accessible and admission is free.

Four plays, one day at Capitol Portal Players is pleased to announce their production of four one-act plays at the Capitol Theatre this month. Four local directors—Chris Arthurs, John Milne, Andrea Markiewicz and Jose Araujo— present four plays for the price of one. The brilliant comedy The Bear, by Chekhov, opens the evening, followed by Fourteen (a comedy) and Legend (a drama). An episode of Fawlty Towers is the final show of the evening, with award-winning actor Ryan Gander as Basil Fawlty. Milne, a veteran one-act director, also plays a part in Fawlty Towers. All tickets are $10 at the door. The shows run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, July 19–21 and July 26–28. Organized sport events, no matter how big or small, have an environmental impact. With the help of its motivated volunteers, the BC Games Society is striving to reduce its environmental impact and raise awareness. Surrey is poised to host the BC Summer

Games July 19–22. Community-driven programs initiated by BC Winter and BC Summer Games volunteers are contributing to reducing the environmental impact of the Games and are developing leaders by increasing environmental awareness among Games participants,
