Our Legendary Mascot Terrace is famous for its mysterious white Kermodei bears, otherwise known as Spirit bears, Moksgm’ol or ghost bears, which are unique to this part of the world. Kermodei bears are actually the same, in every respect, as black bears except for one recessive gene – a gene that must be passed on from both the cub’s mother and father to take effect. That one gene, seemingly magical, changes the black bear’s fur to white.

This bear is Terrace’s official mascot and various seven foot statues of the animal, all uniquely painted by local artists, are on display at several of Terrace’s downtown locations and along the city’s Grand Trunk Pathway.

A First Nations legend says that long ago a raven changed the earth from snowy white to forest green but didn’t want to forget the past. So the raven changed every tenth black bear into a white one to remember the world the way it had once been.

GREAT IDEAS  Take your picture beside one of the many Kermodei bear figures found around Terrace.  See the Kermodei bear at the airport.  Purchase Kermodei photos, paintings and souvenirs from a local gallery or gift shop.  Take a walk and admire the two beautifully painted Kermodei statues on the Grand Trunk Pathway.

Discover The Nisga’a – Four Villages, One Nation The Nass Valley is rich in natural and historic wonders – from the breathtaking Nass River and Vetter Falls to the exceptional Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park. The beauty and natural wonders are connected by four related yet diverse Nisga’a villages – New Aiyansh; Gitwinksilkw; Laxgalts’ap; and Gingolx. Approximately 270 years ago, a volcano erupted, spilling lava across the Nass valley, the area longest occupied by Nisga’a people. The eruption killed thousands and devastated the Nisga’a forcing them to move their villages. Since then a desolate field of solid lava rock, now called the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park, covers the once lush foliage in the area, though some vegetation has started to grow again. 12 | Call Toll-Free 1-877-635-4944

The park is now a popular tourist destination and guided tours to the volcano’s cone are available. If you are looking for accommodations, you will find Bed & Breakfasts in each village as well as Vetter Falls Lodge in the heart of the provincial park. Nass Camp RV Campground has 16 fully serviced RV sites, a dump station and a restaurant.

To book tours in the Nass Valley or learn more about the Nisga’a people, visit www.ncgtourism.ca or call 1-866-633-2696. KT TIP #10

Canyon City (Gitwinksihlkw) Perched on the north bank of the Nass River, the Nisga’a community Gitwinksihlkw is directly across from the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park. Drive across the bridge with its welcoming totem poles and enter the village to see the 400-foot suspension bridge that was once the only access to the village.

New Aiyansh (Home of the Git Miideek) In 2000, the Nisga’a signed the first modern day treaty in British Columbia, a landmark event. Since then, the Nisga’a Lisims Government has overseen the four Nisga’a villages in the area, operating out of New Aiyansh.

Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park Learn about the valley and its people at the Visitor Centre located in the park. Enjoy displays of Nisga’a art including carvings, button blankets and masks and a pictorial history of the Nisga’a and the Nass Valley in the Longhouse. There are 16 campsites at the park.

See the 4 totem poles standing in front of the new Aiyansh Village Government Building or check out the Old Community Centre Painted Face. Stop in at the General Store for gas, snacks and mementos.

Laxgalts’ap (Greenville) Just under two hours north of Terrace, the small community of Laxgalts’ap was once a critical fishing spot for oolichan. Surrounded by incredible scenery and staggering mountain vistas, Laxgalts’ap is home to a youth centre and recreation centre. Stop in at the local carving shed to watch talented carvers at work while you listen to their stories of the history of the Nisga’a people and their land.

Gingolx (Kincolith) Situated on the mouth of the Nass River and at the ocean’s edge, this is the last community on the Nisga’a highway. Once a year this tiny village hosts thousands of visitors to celebrate Crabfest, a 2-day music festival that honours the community’s abundance of seafood. the Terrace Area at the

Terrace’s spectacular natural setting offers extensive outdoor adventure and recreational opportunities. Summer is the time to hike or bike up a mountain, raft through white-water rapids, take to the greens or look for wildlife amongst the trees. All you need to do is choose your adventure.

Bike

Hike/Walk

From technical single track to epic mountain passes to wide, flat pathways, mountain bike enthusiasts of all abilities are guaranteed to find more trails here than daylight. For the more relaxed biker, easy trails weave in, out and around the city, and the Grand Trunk Pathway follows the highway into downtown. If downhill riding is more your style, find your way to Thornhill Mountain where cyclists bike, hike or shuttle to the top to conquer the thrilling steeps again and again.

Terrace is a hiker’s paradise with up to 20 day hikes within an hour’s drive of Terrace’s city centre. Some are short adventures ending in rich alpine meadows, small lakes and streams and craggy peaks with wondrous views, while others are lengthy excursions requiring extensive backcountry knowledge. For assistance on where to find the right path for you, talk to the staff at the Visitor Centre.

Though all kinds of animals can be spotted throughout the summer, bear sightings are the most frequent and for many, the most memorable – consider yourself one of the lucky few if you spot the rare white Kermodei. Into the deep white Winter in Terrace offers endless opportunities to get outside and enjoy the snow, fresh air and natural beauty. From the sweet slopes of the alpine to the exhilarating backcountry drops of the heli-adventures to the gentle flow of the Nordic trails, we’ve got winter covered. For the alpine experience, hit the local ski hill, Shames Mountain (www.shamesmountain.com), where waist deep powder is a common occurrence. And with no crowds, it’s possible to ride fresh lines all day. Take advantage of the easy access from Shames and get in some of the most exciting ski touring in the region. For overnight trips, there are two backcountry cabins in prime ski touring areas. Heli-skiing is also available offering even more fantastic, deeper snow. The Visitor 22 | Call Toll-Free 1-877-635-4944

Centre can assist you in learning more about ski touring in the area. For those who prefer to stay on level ground, the Onion Lake cross country ski trails, maintained regularly by a group of volunteers, are just a half an hour drive south of town. Trails range from one to 13 kms and cover beginner, intermediate and expert terrain. Some routes are even lit to accommodate both day and night skiing. Visit www. snowvalleynordics.com for more information on these trails.

Contact the Visitor Centre (1-877-635-4944) for information on these and other great winter activities. KT TIP #17

If that’s not enough, an endless number of backcountry roads and fields are also great places to discover on your cross-country skis.

Prince Rupert
