Teachers at Brookswood Secondary wore black and teachers from schools around Langley were expected to demonstrate outside the Steelworkers union hall on Monday evening after a general meeting of Langley Teachers Association, said president Gail Chaddock-Costello.

The union meeting for teachers began at 4 p.m. Monday. Teachers will vote this week on escalating their job action, in response to the government’s plan to impose a contract settlement. A full strike is possible, even though teachers are forbidden by provincial law from walking off the job. A big rally was also planned at the Cloverdale Agriplex Monday, with B.C. Teachers Federation president Susan Lambert the keynote speaker. Surrey is the largest B.C. school district and has the most members of any BCTF local. A contingent of Langley teachers was going to the rally to show solidarity.

“Teachers’ morale is good. Nobody wants to get to the point where we walk out. “Teachers want to teach and be in the classroom,” said Chaddock-Costello. “But we have been told that the government is willing to go to mediation on everything that doesn’t have monetary value. . . It doesn’t look good.” Teachers are asking for a 15 per cent increase over three years. On Monday, teachers arrived at school just before school started, and left school as soon as classes were finished, in order to attend the meetings. Each school also hosted a union meeting at lunch time.

The 19-year-old Surrey man charged in connection with the choking of a bus driver and stabbing of a bus passenger in Aldergrove has been held in jail. Steven Fayant is charged with aggravated assault for the stabbing of a 41-yearold Langley man, who was getting off the bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Fayant is also charged with assault in connection with strangling a Surrey bus driver on Feb. 18. The suspect, who is known to police, made his Cpl. Holly first court appearance in Marks Surrey Provincial Court on Friday, where a judge remanded him in custody. He makes another appearance on Tuesday (today). Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks said that Fayant was arrested shortly after midnight last Thursday at his Surrey home. He did not resist arrest. Police from Langley, Surrey and the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team took part in the apprehension. The arrest was made possible after a Langley Mountie recognized the man from surveillance footage provided by TransLink. Court documents show that Fayant was charged with being in possession of break-in tools on July 28, 2011, and charged three days later for a break in. On Sept. 25, 2011, he was charged with assault.

A truck flipped onto its side along 216 Street near 64 Avenue on Monday afternoon, causing traffic congestion in the area. The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance. After the vehicle was righted, it was towed out of the ditch, while Township firefighters stood by.

The firing of Langley superintendent of schools Cheryle Beaumont cost taxpayers more than $300,000. In the school district’s amended 2012 budget, which was approved at last Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, it showed that severance of $440,533 was paid out to Beaumont and the former assistant secretary-treasurer, Tally Bains. “We are trying to be as transparent and open about this as possible,” said board chair Wendy Johnson. She expects that the board will be able to make public exactly how much of the $440,000 went to Beaumont. The former superintendent made $198,503 per year, plus benefits. On top of her severance, the 2012 budget included $62,000 for Beaumont’s “departure costs.” That $62,000 is a combination of paying the legal expenses for Beaumont’s departure and hiring a head hunting

Alert teller prevents scam MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

An 88-year-old war veteran would like to warn other seniors, after he came close to losing $8,000 from men who were pretending to be representing the fire department. An alert bank teller kept that from happening. Four men in a truck came to his rural home in the 40 Avenue and 232 Street area over the weekend, and tried to bilk the long-time Langley resident out of $8,000 for new smoke detectors they say he “needed” to install. “I saw them pull up in a truck and look at the gate,” said the senior, who won’t be named to protect his identity. They then drove away and a while later called him to say they were going through the neighbourhood and needed to inspect his carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms. It was later learned that these four men, three in their 20s or 30s, and one man in his 60s, went to the man’s neighbour, saying they has wanted to look at a tractor for sale on the property, but the gate prevented them from looking. They convinced the neighbour to give

them the war veteran’s name and phone number. “They called me up so I opened the gate for them,” he said. “They went through the whole house and installed new smoke alarms.” That’s when they asked for a cheque for $8,000. “The smoke detectors were those cheap ones,” said the victim’s son. “What saved my hide” is that his cheque bounced and the teller at the Royal Bank in Willowbrook, who dealt with the suspect trying to cash the cheque, knew of the victim and knew it was out of character, his son said. She called the police. Police took fingerprints from the smoke detectors and are actively looking to make some arrests in this case. In the meantime, the situation has left this senior shaken. “I didn’t sleep well that night,” he said. His gate is even more secure and his son, who lives nearby, is keeping a close eye out. They hope there is an arrest. “You can’t shoot these guys anymore,” the victim joked. “That would solve things really quickly.” One suspect in his 30s was chewing tobacco, another was heavy set, in his late

30s and one was very tall. The older man is described as Caucasian, in his mid-50s to 60s, 5’7” tall. Police say the suspects arrived in a newer white pickup, with orange lights on a rack at the back window of the truck. In a press release from the board in January, it announced Beaumont’s departure, saying she was leaving “to pursue other ventures.” But veteran trustee Alison McVeigh revealed to The Times that Beaumont was in fact fired in a 5-2 vote by the trustees. McVeigh and trustee Rod Ross have been vocal in their opposition to letting Beaumont go. McVeigh has been censured by the board for releasing in-camera information about Beaumont’s departure.

The City of Langley, in partnership with ICBC, has installed an electronic pole mounted speed reader board near the bottom of the hill on 208 Street just north of 47 Avenue to remind drivers to watch their speed and drive safely. The 208 Street location was selected based on speed data from the City’s engineering department and in response to speeding concerns raised by City Council and the community. “This location at the bottom of the 208 Street hill sees over 10,000 vehicles per day with an average speed of 70 km/h. drivers to slow down and drive safely as they travel through the City of Langley, thereby reducing the number of crashes and saving lives.” The new pole mounted speed reader board will display and record the speed of passing vehicles along with the time of day. The data gathered from this board will help pinpoint when excessive speeding is likely to occur, allowing the City to more effectively manage traffic safety and speeding concerns. “ICBC is pleased to partner with the City and police on the new speed reader board in Langley. Investing in this technology is one of the ways we’re helping drivers be safer on our roads,” said Leanne Cassap, ICBC’s road safety co-ordinator for Langley. According to ICBC, unsafe speed is one of the leading contributing factors in police-reported car crashes. An average of 152 people were killed in speed-related collisions each year from 2005 to 2009, with over 53 per cent of these occurring on a weekend. The peak hours for fatalities due to speedrelated collisions are between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. “The speed reader board is a great awareness tool for drivers. It’s a friendly reminder for everyone to slow down and make smart driving decisions — the faster you drive, the less time you have to react to the unforeseen. An arrest was made shortly after midnight on Thursday, and a 19-year-old man from Surrey is facing charges, in connection with the stabbing and an attack on a Surrey bus driver several days earlier.

All of these alleged offences took place in Langley. Those charges are still before the courts. The victim of the stabbing wasn’t known to the suspect and it isn’t known what provoked

the stabbing, said police. He was stabbed in the back as he was getting off the bus. The victim’s brother gave chase but the assailant got away. The 41-year-old victim was flown to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released from hospital and

is expected to recover. In the Surrey incident, the bus driver said he asked a young man to move down the bus which the suspect complied with. He later returned to the driver and started choking him. The assailant suddenly let go and ran off the bus.

Strike to get worse

It will not lead to Ecstasy

he ongoing teachers’ strike, which thus far has mainly been marked by a lack of report cards and minimal co-operation between principals and teachers in schools, is about to get much nastier. The B.C. Teachers Federation may go out onto the picket lines, depending on what its members tell it. Meetings were held at all schools in the province on Monday. The escalated strike action, if it comes about, will be a result of the provincial government’s plan to legislate a settlement to the dispute. While the two sides have been bargaining for about eight months, there has been little movement on both sides and they remain far apart. The BCTF wants a 15 per cent wage increase over three years, which is obviously far too rich for taxpayers at the present. It is particularly out of step with other settlements between the province and other government workers. At the same time, the province has offered little in the way of incentives for the BCTF to modify its proposals. Its standard response has been that it wants a ”net zero” contract, and it’s up to the union to come up with potential cost saving ideas that would fund a wage increase. Unfortunately, negotiated settlements between the BCTF and the provincial bargaining agency are very rare. There’s only been one, and that was due to the fact that the province was willing to offer teachers a good wage boost at a time when the economy was in much better shape. The NDP, which brought in provincial bargaining in the 1990s, was no more successful in reaching negotiated settlements than the Liberals have been. The BCTF sees itself as above the fray of ordinary bargaining, and the structure of the union itself makes it difficult to reach negotiated agreements. Teachers do have some issues which need resolution. The province has dumped a lot of extra work on them, through changes to its reporting systems, and through an added number of children with special needs in many classrooms. Many teachers will soon be retiring, and the province has shown little interest in offering incentives to keep good teachers on the job longer, to offer their skills in the classroom and act as mentors to young teachers who are just starting out. Unfortunately, the ones who will suffer through any escalated strike are students.

Hardly fun... Interference with the body’s ability to regulate its temperature, leading to hyperthermia. This is getting serious. Brain and organ damage – or death – in 75 per cent of serious overheating cases. That’s the supposedly “safe” street drug known as ecstasy, or MDMA. Once in the domain of raves, or large dance parties, this synthetic drug has made its way into the high school demographic. In about the past year, it has been the cause of 18 deaths in B.C. – including two Abbotsford teens, and one in Langley. Ecstasy doesn’t require prolonged use to be potentially fatal. Because of the wide range of toxic chemical concoctions developed in home labs, disaster can result from a single dose. Ecstasy is cheap, it’s easy to get, and it’s increasingly popular. Police, medical and education officials are undertaking new initiatives to get the message out: Ecstasy can be a killer. Parents, you must become informed. You need to have conversations with the young people in your care. Don’t assume your kids simply wouldn’t touch ecstasy. You may be tragically wrong. And to the youth in this community: Please, listen. Think. Other schools deserve such assistance Editor: I was puzzled to see that Langley Township council was so accommodating in approving residential development at the site of the Trinity Western University, a private university. From what I understand, this property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve and outside the Metro Vancouver growth strategy area. I am sure that, from Trinity Western’s perspective, there is a need for this housing. Many of our rural elementary schools have been closed, due to declining enrolments, over the past few years. These schools were located in areas where expensive larger acreage properties are the norm. I wonder if these schools would still be open if council showed the same consideration to property owners located next to these schools and allowed affordable housing to be built. Surely this would have brought young families with children

into these areas. These rural schools had served their communities for decades. One might even say that they were the foundations of the communities they were located in. After all, when we first moved into the Salmon River Uplands area, the first people we met, other than our immediate neighbours, were the parents of other kids at our children’s school. I wonder how the people living in the areas that were once serviced by Bradhaw Elementary, County Line Elementary, South Carvolth Elementary and other schools that are on the chopping block feel about council ignoring their communities’ needs, while accommodating this very successful private university. Our family lives on three acres a couple of properties away from Peterson Road Elementary, which has struggled with declining student

enrolment in the past. We are not in the ALR and are in the catchment area for sewer and water. As a result of Langley’s planning policy, we are only allowed one residence on our property. On the positive side, our grandkids are within walking distance of their school and Peterson Road should be able to stay open now that they are busing in kids from all of the other schools that have been closed. So much for supporting all of the different communities in Langley. I guess we will all be expected to live within a mile of 200 Street in the future. The oil companies must love these planning policies with all the students being bused or driven from the closed schools and all the cars idling on 200 Street. Tod McGovern, Langley

Rising gas prices to set us up for $1.70/litre Editor: I just can’t get over this crap with gasoline prices. Just recently there was a fire at a refinery in Washington state. We were advised that would not affect us as most of our gas and oil comes from the western provinces. So I look to my local gas station for gas,

and find that in the last eight days, the cost of gas has risen 12 cents a litre. Can someone explain that to me? It sounds like gouging. When the cost of oil is high, it takes only minutes to increase the cost of gasoline. When the cost of oil is low, it takes months to see a reduction.

There is no excuse for this. Now there is the threat of gasoline costing us upwards of $1.70 per litre this summer. This is just another ruse to prepare the taxpayer for another money grab. Debbie Atkinson, Langley

Just last summer, the Township signed the Regional Growth Strategy. The RGS is founded on a firm urban containment boundary to preserve the ALR and to direct growth. Without an urban containment boundary, we no longer have smart growth. Within a month of signing the document, the Township approved a bizarre proposal to allow

21 houses outside the containment boundary and within the ALR south of Murrayville. This proposal was appropriately labeled as “bad planning policy” by then-councillor Mel Kositsky. Now we have the Wall proposal near TWU. The Wall proposal is even worse. It not only lies outside the urban containment boundary but it is in the middle of the ALR, with no nearby residential or urban development. The Wall development is spot zoning of the worst kind. And what is the Township response to the con-

flict between these two bizarre proposals and the RGS? Planner Ramin Seifi tells us that Township is going to brazen it out and claim some sort of phantom exemption from the RGS. Is the Township signature on regional documents totally worthless? Are we going to see a hodgepodge of spot zoning throughout the ALR? When will we have proper planning in the Township of Langley? Thumbs down to Canada Post Editor: I ordered an item from Amazon on Feb. 3. It was immediately shipped to Canada Customs and then, presumably, to Canada Post. It took a week to arrive and will, I suppose, take another week for the tiny envelope of needles to arrive here. I asked a man who is in business and has volumes of mail what he thought of the service he received from Canada Post. I am sorry that I am unable to print his reply, as the language would be banned from print. The lady who delivers our mail is most pleasant. Keep it clean Editor: I walk three dogs most mornings and I pick up after them. It is the epitome of selfishness to leave your dog’s mess for someone else to clean up. If you don’t want to clean it up, why do you suppose someone else does? I have seen signs from frustrated property owners asking people not to leave dog excrement on their lawns, and then I see piles left there. Decision devastates parents Times Reporter

It’s a done deal, and a lot of R.C. Garnett Elementary parents are devastated. In a letter to parents sent out on Friday, the Langley School District said it is proceeding with the reconfiguration of R.C. Garnett from a K-7 to a K-5 school, effective September 2012. Next school year, Grade 6s and 7s will be attending the new Lynn Fripps Elementary, which is located a bus ride away at 83 Avenue, just east of 208 Street in Yorkson. “A lot of us were in tears.We are greatly disappointed by the school district and its disregard for our school community,” said R.C. Garnett PAC co-chair Lorraine Baldwin. The letter to parents, signed by acting superintendent Suzanne Hoffman said:“The district . . . have appreciated all of the input provided and have not arrived at this decision easily . . . a team will be established to facilitate . . . a transition plan.” The current Grade 4s will be going to four schools in four years, pointed out Baldwin. The Katimavik group currently staying in Fort Langley held an open house on Sunday. The group, comprised of 11 young women supervised by a project leader who lives with them, arrived in Fort Langley on Jan. 4 and will remain in the community until June 20.

Katimavik is Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading national youth service learning organization. Organizers are looking for families in

the Langley area who are willing to host volunteers, aged 17 to 21, from across Canada. This offers a chance to get to know a young person who is presently volunteering in the community, while introducing them to your way of life. As part of Katimavikâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program, participants spend nine days with a host family in a region in order to get a better sense of the culture and local life of the community. For some volunteers

this is also an excellent opportunity to benefit from a full-fledged linguistic immersion. This experience will be filled with discoveries for both families and volunteers. Each family hosting a Katimavik volunteer receives a stipend to offset costs. Those who are interested can contact LJ at 1-866-941-6589, extension 2203. The Katimavik group arrived in Fort Langley on Jan. 4 and will live in the community until June 20. The

A town hall meeting on Saturday will offer residents a chance to ask questions of politicians elected to represent Langley on four different government bodies. The session will be held at the Langley Events Centre, 7888-200 Street, and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Residents are encouraged to come out and ask questions of their elected officials. Taking part will be Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese, Langley MP Mark Warawa, Langley MLA Mary Polak, and Langley Board of Education chair Wendy Johnson. The town hall meeting will give residents a chance to hear from and ask questions of their local elected officials. The camera will give travellers heading to the Aldergrove/Lynden border a real-time snapshot of traffic volumes, as well as road and weather conditions. With views to the north and south, the new webcam gives travellers a good view of traffic heading to and from the Aldergrove/Lynden border crossing, helping those going to the border to choose which crossing to use. You’ve probably heard about the hundred mile diet, a social movement which advocates eating food grown within 100 miles which minimizes the ecological footprint by reducing reliance on imported food because of the financial and environmental cost of transportation. But what about The Zero Mile Diet? The concept is the title of a best-selling book by Carolyn Herriot, an organic gardening guru from Vancouver Island. Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Disease is a degenerative condition of brain neurons, typically starting at age 50 to 60. It results in movement and non-movement problems and is thought to be related to genetic and environmental causes. Research is trying to identify toxins and a recent study pointed to 2 culprits: trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene, solvents used in a variety of settings. They were associated with a six- to tenfold increase in Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s risk! Environmental causes of Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s have been considered for some time and, with no deďŹ nitive agent found, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thought to be the cumulative exposure to several toxins over time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; probably in genetically pre-disposed individuals. It seems to be associated with rural living, well-water and herbicides & pesticides. We have no treatments to cure or slow the progression of the disease, but there are drugs and other treatments to help manage symptoms. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not only a search for the cause of Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Disease but also for anything that might prevent itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s development. A study examining CoEnzyme Q10 was halted in 2011 due to the lack of evidence that it was slowing the progression of the condition. Alternatively, the consumption of ďŹ&#x201A;avenoids (especially anthocyanins, found it berries) was associated with a reduced risk of developing Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Another feather in the cap of a healthy diet! Video games are contributing to some interesting health research. A small trial tested the beneďŹ ts of customized physical therapy games, similar to Wii or xBox-Kinect, for managing Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Disease. The games used speciďŹ c movements and gestures and were played 3 times weekly. They resulted in 55-65% improvements in walking speed, stride length, balance and conďŹ dence. And, participants enjoyed the games so much, they wanted to play more! There is so much more that contributes to good health than drugs and our pharmacists actively learn about these alternatives. eavy subject matter and a challenging script — one that is sung from beginning to end — have not proven too much for the young actors and singers who roam the halls of Langley Secondary and H.D. Stafford Middle Schools. Quite the contrary, says LSS musical director Patti Thorpe, who helped cast this year’s musical theatre production of Les Misérables, which features no fewer than 70 young performers singing and dancing their way across the stage — and 25 more in the orchestra pit — until Saturday, March 3. Thorpe, who is directing the play, along with LSS drama teacher Chad Hendricks and H.D.M.S.’ Brian Leonard, said she has been thrilled with the response they’ve received from the students — both in the number that came out to audition and the quality of their performances. The student edition of the musical which is being presented is somewhat shorter than the Broadway show, but hits all the same plot points, Thorpe explained. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century France, including the June Rebellion of 1832. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean Valjean (played by Marshall Willows) is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes an honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive father to Cosette (Makeala Rempel) — violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector Javert (Sean Basso) who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently pursues him. Valjean proves his mettle during

As always, Thorpe said, more girls auditioned for the production than boys, and since

it is a play heavily populated with male characters, several of the young women were cast as men or boys. “We have some girls crossdressing . . . which is a challenge,” said Thorpe. They’re having to get their voices a bit lower.”

After last year’s light-hearted original production — a revue of Rodgers and Hammerstein — which featured 50 student performers, the trio of teachers decided to return this spring to a favourite classic. “We love this show. Every one of the adults working on it — this is the one show you want to do,” said Thorpe. But because it is such a popular drama, that means added pressure for the students, who were shown a concert version of the play during an early rehearsal and have been encouraged to seek out other performances to watch. “There’s so much material out there to study, it’s daunting,” Thorpe said. One of the nice aspects of the script is that it gives pretty well every student a chance to shine, for at least a moment, with a line to sing solo. A local actress who has performed the role of Fantine on Broadway, worked with the students, helping them to gain a better understanding of their character and how to remain true to that character when they’re not the focus of the action — which, with 70 performers, is quite a lot of the time, Thorpe noted. “She was a marvelous resource,” said Thorpe. “She spent the day with the kids and gave them lots of guidance.” ••• Les Misérables runs at Langley Secondary School, at 21405 56 Ave., March 1-3. he music department at R.E. Mountain Secondary School will hold its ninth annual Spring Pops Concert on Wednesday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the main gymnasium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Under the musical direction of David Mills and Jen Williams, this fundraising concert will feature the school’s bands and choirs performing popular film and television music in a relaxed and informal setting. This year’s concert will also highlight the music of Hollywood, including hits from Star Wars, the Harry Potter film series, West Side Story, James Bond and The Lord Of The Rings. Guests will be seated at candlelit tables, where they can enjoy a gourmet beverage, appetizers, and dessert which are included with the price of admission. The magic of true love and dancing teapots is what’s in store for audiences at D.W. Poppy Secondary from Feb. 28 to March 3, as the school’s theatre and music departments join forces to present Beauty and the Beast. And Disney fans of all ages are invited to be their guest. “We wanted to do a family show, especially after doing Grease last year,” said Poppy drama instructor, Amber Inglis. And the timing couldn’t have been better, she said, thanks to a touring production of the Broadway show that just came through Vancouver. “They did all our advertising for us,” she laughed. Because the play is based on the 1991 movie, the story follows the Disney screenplay almost to the letter, Inglis said, so it will be very familiar to audiences. ing beast created to reign over the chaos. To that end, “costumes were my number one thing,” Inglis said. Designed and sewn by Stephanie Dieleman (the mother of one of Inglis’ students) with help from other parents and the school’s sewing teacher, the costumes are expected to be breathtaking. “I know they’re going to be spectacular,” Inglis said. “She was the first phone call I made when we decided to do Beauty and the Beast.” Make-up was less of a concern, however. Because the beast has to transform on stage into a handsome prince, the best option was a mask and wig. Musically, the show is fairly advanced, Inglis said. The production features 50 performers, accompanied by a student orchestra. With musicals having become the norm for high school productions, it’s important for students to have that background, she said. “We’re lucky to have a fairly

strong music program at Poppy. “All our leads are accomplished singers.” That doesn’t happen by chance. At the beginning of the school year, anyone who expresses an interest in theatre is strongly encouraged to join one of the school’s vocal ensembles, Inglis said. Grade 12 student Glen Jackson, who plays the beast, performs in a band and Amara Gelaude (Belle), who is also in her last year at the school, is a long-time choral student as well. This year’s show contains a good mix of veteran performers and newcomers, Inglis said. “We had some pretty strong Grade 8s show up for auditions and there are some pretty strong Grade 12 students we’re going to lose next year,” she said. “You always look at the cast and think, ‘Oh, no. What are we going to do next year?’” But experience has taught her that there are always younger students who have been literally waiting in the wings for their continued, PAGE 19

‘Everything I expected and more’ Aldergrove’s Brad Thiessen victorious in NHL debut with Pittsburgh

The puck is the same size in the NHL as it is at every other level. Goalie coach Gilles Meloche passed along that message to Aldergrove’s Brad Thiessen prior to his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Thiessen shared that nugget in a media scrum following his 22-save performance in a 4-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Consol Energy Center. His efforts earned him first star honours. “It was everything I expected and more,” he told reporters. “It was a lot of fun to be a part of it and contribute to a win.” Thiessen was recalled from the Penguins AHL affiliate in WilkesBarre/Scranton last week after backup goalie Brent Johnson suffered an injury. And with the team playing back-toback games on Saturday and Sunday, Thiessen figured he might get his first taste of NHL regular season action. The Blue Jackets’ Vinny Prospal scored the final goal of the game. Thiessen spent three seasons in the BCHL before starring at Northeastern University. In his junior season, he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented to the top collegiate player. He left school early and signed with the Penguins as a free agent in 2009. After three back-and-forth sets, two of which were won by the Manitoba Bisons, the Trinity Western Spartans dug deep and won the final two sets convincingly, capturing the Canada West men’s volleyball gold medal. “Resilience,” said Spartans setter Ben Ball. “The first three sets were extremely tight. “We just stuck with it and made adjustments. “We just wanted to stay confident and focused on what we were doing and things started to turn around in the second half.” The first three sets were all decided by two points apiece, but facing defeat if they dropped the fourth set, the Spartans won convincingly, 25-14.The fifth and deciding set went 15-9 for Trinity Western. Regardless of this weekend’s outcome at the Canada West final four championships, which were hosted at the Langley Events Centre, all four teams were guaranteed to move on to this weekend’s CIS national

championships at Queen’s University in Kingston. The Spartans, the defending national champs, are ranked first at the eight-team event. Ball said it was important for the team to win the Canada West gold medal because they wanted the highest seed possible. It was also a chance for Ball and the team’s two other graduating seniors — Rudy Verhoeff and Marc Howatson — to win their final game ever at the LEC. The Spartans also became the first-ever men’s volleyball program to win four of the conference’s five year-end awards. Ball was named the player of the year, Jarrod Offeriens won the libero of the year, Verhoeff was the top student-athlete, and Ben Josephson won coach of the year. Ball and Verhoeff were also named Canada West first-team allstars while Steven Marshall was a second team all-star. “It feels good obviously, but it won’t feel nearly as good if we don’t win nationals,” Ball said about his individual award. “It will be a good addition if we win nationals. “That is the main goal of this entire year.”

Josephson also downplayed his award. “It means we have a great volleyball team,” he said. “All awards are team awards in this sport.” Josephson said he was impressed with how his team responded with their backs to the wall. Since losing to Manitoba on Jan. 27, the Spartans won their next six matches — including the Canada West semifinals — dropping only a single set along the way. “We needed to feel like what it feels like to lose and the guys responded really well in the fourth and fifth set,” he said. Going into this weekend’s national championships, Josephson said the team has work to do. “We are going to have to clean some of that stuff up because I don’t think the effort is good enough to win nationals,” he said. “It was barely good enough to win the conference.” One thing working in his team’s favour is the fact they have won the big prize before. “We know what it takes, now it is are we willing to do it and are they willing to pay that price?”

After a back-andforth first half, the Langley Christian Lightning turned up the defensive pressure to douse the Unity Christian Flames. The Lightning captured the Fraser Valley Single A senior boys basketball title with a 58-46 win on Saturday night at Trinity Western University. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a pretty good healthy rivalry and it lived up to its billing,â&#x20AC;? said Lightning coach Matt Van Muyen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a battle out there.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We did a good job on defence; I think that is where we won the game,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We worked extremely hard and were able to pull it out
