Future of resource roads unclear Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The resource roads that keep the people of Golden connected to the vast backcountry in the area may be in jeopardy. A Natural Resource Road Act project discussion paper, which the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations in Victoria hopes will be turned into a bill to be introduced to the Legislature by the fall of 2012, is suggesting that many of the resource roads in the province be turned over for private maintenance, or closed. “How to maintain the Province’s resource roads is a complicated issue, and in 2008 the BC Liberals introduced legislation to change the management of these roads. That legislation was poorly designed, and because of the overwhelming opposition to the legislation, it was withdrawn, said Columbia River - Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald. “A second attempt to resolve this issue is expected shortly, but we are hearing that once again the legislation is being rushed. Attempts to consult with some road users has provided more questions than answers. The discussion paper suggests that private businesses who use a given resource road take over the responsibility of mainten-

ance. If no such business steps forward, the road may be closed. “Where there is no designated maintainer, government may determine that the risk to users or the environment is too great to allow the road to continue to remain open, states the discussion paper. For two months, from mid-October to mid-December 2011, the discussion paper was posted online, and the ministry was asking for as much feedback as possible. It generated more than 4,000 individual responses, which were compiled in a summary document. “Over the spring and summer of 2012, a series of 14 working groups with members from across the province will use the feedback to shape a workable and fair piece of draft legislation that will be submitted for government’s consideration in the fall, reads the summary document. Macdonald is concerned that the BC Liberals are trying to rush out a piece of legislation that is not yet sufficiently worked out. “Certain groups feel they have been consulted, but many will be surprised to learn some of the things that are being considered, said Macdonald. “We don’t know for sure what will be in the legislation, but what I am hearing from people who have participated in consultations is worrisome. If they don’t get this right it could make life very difficult for people in Golden.

Golden is known for its backcountry adventure lifestyle, and if access to these backcountry roads is restricted it could affect adventure tourism businesses, prospectors, hunters, back country operators, hikers, ATVers, woodlot operators, and any local or visiting outdoor enthusiasts. “For people in rural areas, the implications are really profound. It will have an impact on access for recreational users, which in Golden is an important part of our quality of life, to be able to get up to places like Gorman Lake, said Macdonald. “There are reasons why you would shut down certain roads. But there’s also reasons why, for the public interest, you’d maintain them. If there are multiple businesses operating on the same resource road, the responsibility would fall to the business that uses it the most says Macdonald. And their level of control is not yet clear, which raises several concerns. “If they’re going to pay for it, does that give them the right to limit access? What about liability? If there is a user that uses it slightly more that a host of other businesses why does the obligation fall on them? And is this the most effective way of actually doing this? said Macdonald. “This is an important piece of legislation, and it is important for Golden that the government take their time and do it right.

The Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce has decided to combine the Women’s Show (last year’s pictured above), and the Green Show into one allencompassing Golden Spring Home and Lifestyle Show, taking place on April 14 and 15. Star Photo

Chamber of Commerce bringing trade show to Golden Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Spring Home and Lifestyle Show is in its early planning stages, and is currently selling booths for the event taking place on April 14 and 15. The Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce has booked the Golden Arena for the occasion, and they are expecting upwards of 60 booths. “In the past we did the Women’s Show. And last year we did the Women’s Show and Green Show. This year we just want to bring everything together into one event,” said Ruth Hamilton, office manager of the Chamber. “So we decided to rebrand it, and now it’s called the Golden Spring Home and Lifestyle Show.” This two-day trade show will be exhibiting just about everything you can think of from various products, to construction trade companies, to health and lifestyle experts. “We’ll still have the products, but now it will include the construction trade, plumbers, electricians, venders who sell green products could be there. And lifestyle is included, so nutrition

coaches, yoga instructors, and health products. So everything about living in Golden and living a healthy lifestyle,” said Hamilton. The Chamber is expecting 60 to 70 booths at the show. The amount of space will depend on what size of booth businesses buy (the options being a 10X10, 10X20, or 20X20). “We’re hoping to get maybe a car dealership in there, maybe a furniture supplier that will take a larger space,” said Hamilton. Chamber members will receive $100 off the cost of a booth, but Hamilton recommends that potential exhibitors purchase their booth sooner rather than later. The show often sells out, and last year they were right at capacity. “I had one business attribute $100,000 worth of sales one year to the trade show. Not right at the show, but from leads that were gained at the trade show,” said Hamilton. “So it is definitely worth it to set up a booth.” The Chamber is expecting around 1,200 people to come and check out the show. It is the only opportunity in Golden where people can check out and compare various businesses in one place. “I’m really excited about it. I think it’s going to be a great show

for Golden, and it’s going to bring all the businesses into one location. So if someone is thinking about renovating this year, they can come to the show and meet with a plumber and an electrician, and get some advice on the best products,” said Hamilton. “And if someone wants to start off fresh in the spring and take on a healthy lifestyle. There will be people there they can go and talk to.” Of course there will be more than just browsing to do at the trade show. There will be a stage with entertainment every hour, a concession, a free community pancake breakfast on the Sunday morning, arts and crafts, and a children’s centre. “There will be tons of prizes as well. Each exhibitor will have a door prize. And the Chamber will have door prizes as well that will be raffled off to people,” said Hamilton. “There’s probably going to be close to $8,000 worth of door prizes to be won.” The trade show will go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday April 14, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday April 15. Anyone who wants to have a booth in the show can contact the Chamber office at 3447125, or info@goldenchamber.bc.ca. or visit the Chamber website at www.goldenchamber.bc.ca.

Budget comes out and receives mixed reactions Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The release of the new budget for British Columbia has received mixed reactions from multiple groups across the province. Minister of Finance, Kevin Falcon said, “We introduced a budget that I think speaks to the times we are in. We are in very different times now and I think there is a new reality for government. I don’t think every government has yet figured that out but in British Columbia we have been watching very carefully what’s happening in Europe, the United States and even in other parts of Canada with real concern. The concern is underpinned by governments that have lost discipline and control in expenditures. They have found themselves in positions where they are labouring under very large deficits and huge debts.” However Columbia River – Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald released a statement which said, “The 2012 BC Liberal budget appears to be more of the same from a government that has presided over the erosion of key government services and the mismanagement of taxpayers’ dollars over the last 11 years.” “Too many times this government has put forward budget numbers that turned out to be inaccurate, so it’s hard to take these numbers too seriously,” said Macdonald. “But what is clear is that Premier Christy Clark is continuing to follow the same path of cutting key services and wasting money on things like advertising campaigns that are nothing more than government propaganda. People in my area are clear that they expect their government to provide quality health and education services. They expect the justice system to work. And they expect govern-

ment to be a good steward of our land base. But tough times and hope for a better future. als that our public forest lands are in crisis, Macdonald said. “British Columbians need a government that understands its responsibility to its taxpayers. Taxpayers need to feel confident that their government is focused on providing vital services, improving economic opportunities and protecting our environment. This is the very least that a citizenry should expect from its government.” Falcon explained the budget actually does many things to help many different families in the province. “There are all kinds of families that we think about in a budget like this. The children’s arts and sports tax credit is actually for families. The $10,000 first time buyers bonus is a real benefit for families particularly young people trying to get into their first home. The $1000 senior renovation tax credit is very significant for seniors, being able to stay in their homes and not have to go to a facility...I think there is actually a lot here that responds to the needs of families. Obviously if you only take the position that additional dollars is the only yard stick you use to determine something is good for families I would fundamentally disagree with that premise,” he said. Art Kube, President of the 80,000-member Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C. did not see things this way. “What’s really needed – as COSCO has proposed for years – is a comprehensive home care and home support program designed to help seniors live with dignity and independence in their own homes. Not only is this good for seniors’ quality of life, but it reduces the intake into residential care and acute care. Improving seniors’ lives in this way would actually reduce overall health care costs, and especially capital costs.”

If you have normal vision, would you consider driving with one eye closed at night? To most people that would seem to be a very foolish question. Why would anyone want to diminish their capability to see while driving! Take a look at other vehicles on the highway right now. How many of them have only one headlight working? Isn’t that the same as driving with one eye closed? True, headlights are on a lot more at this time of year and are more apt to burn out. There is also gravel on the road from winter maintenance that contributes to broken headlights. On the other hand, it is a simple matter to purchase and replace these yourself at minimum expense. Consider what good headlighting can mean to you. Night driving is essentially moving down a tunnel of light created by your headlights. That tunnel has to be wide enough and long enough to allow you to detect and react to any driving situation. Your lights also give other drivers information about where you are on the highway. The loss of one headlight is the loss of at least half that information and could be the major contribution in an accident. If one headlight is out and you lose the other, what then? Do you drive with no headlights? Oh, you say, the police will only give me a warning. You may be ticketed for driving with only one headlight and you can expect to be ticketed and parked on the spot for driving with none! New upgrades at Kicking Horse Ford Dan Maisonneuve GM/Dealer Principle at Kicking Horse Ford EBA Engineering and GeoTech drilling are completing the environmental assessment at Kicking Horse Ford. A clean bill of health will allow them to start on a facility upgrade, including an all new Ford sign, new siding, and a

Ford Tower. Many improvements are slated for the interior of the building as well, new flooring, furniture and a paint job will make it a more pleasant atmosphere for customers and staff alike. I would prefer to do a timber frame theme which I think fits in much better with the downtown core but that does not meet the

national criteria as set by Ford of Canada, they want the stores to look similar right across the country as many franchises do. Kicking Horse Ford was recently recognized as the number one dealer in their group for overall customer satisfaction in both sales and service. I am extremely proud of our team and very thankful to our customers.

UBC welcomes extensive collection thanks to Columbia Basin Trust support Rachel Lucas Columbia Basin Trust One of the largest private film collections in Canada, which provides a fascinating document of rural B.C., will be housed and preserved by the Univeristy of British Columbia Library thanks to a generous donation from the Halleran family and the support of community partners including Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The Halleran Collection, valued at $750,000, consists of about 250 nature-oriented video programs produced in British Columbia over the decades – first by Mike Halleran and then by his son Terry. These shows, known collectively as the Westland series, were broadcast by the Knowledge Network from 1984 to 2007. They examine a broad range of issues associated with forestry, fresh water fishing, endangered species and ecosystem restoration. The donation also includes an extensive library of 2,000 source tapes. Terry Halleran donated the bulk of the collection to UBC Library, and the remainder was purchased. Halleran was introduced to the Library by Don Laishley, a UBC alumnus and member of the Library’s Advisory Board. “We took a lot of pride in what we did. It wasn’t always easy, but we believed in environmental education, says Halleran. “UBC Library was the obvious choice for us, considering the long-standing relationship between our series and the expertise UBC faculty and students brought to the table.

Halleran notes that the Westland programs have been used as teaching tools in classrooms at UBC and elsewhere since the 1980s. The programs also feature some former UBC faculty members. “We anticipate that with increasing interest in natural resource management, environmentalism and sustainability, this collection will be of considerable interest to a variety of researchers at the university and the broader community, notes Chris Hives, university archivist. Columbia Basin Trust is providing $100,000 to support the acquisition and digitization of the Westland series tapes. “We’re delighted to contribute towards preserving the collection and making it available to all to study, reflect on and simply appreciate, says Neil Muth, CBT’s President and CEO. “Thanks go to UBC for organizing this and to Terry Halleran for donating a huge portion of the collection. Other community partners that provided funds to support the purchase of the collection include the Okanagan Region Wildlife Heritage Fund Society, the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Halleran would like to recognize the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund and the British Columbia Conservation Foundation for their support with the preservation and management of the Westland series in advance of its transfer to UBC. University Archives staff have begun preparing an inventory to enable access to the Halleran Collection.

Fiddle workshop set for Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A different sound of fiddle playing is about to come to Golden for a special two day workshop put on by Li Jigeurs Mechif. Li Jigeurs Mechif is a local Metis group which has been working together for the past seven years promoting cultural events. Davene Dunn and Caren Nagao have worked with other members in the group to try and bring interesting and diverse shows and workshops to the area. After going to a fiddle camp last year in Gavin Lake the organizers met Gordon Stobbe and JJ Guy. It wasn’t long before the idea was bouncing around to try and bring the players to Golden for a workshop. The event will give local fiddle/violin musicians of all ages and levels the opportunity to work with two professionals. “They will be able to learn some new fiddle tunes and techinique over the two days. They will also be able to showcase their skills at a concert and family dance on the Tuesday night,” Dunn said. As an extra bonus at the dance people will also have the chance to learn some Metis and square dancing as well. “The instructors will also be participating at the show with the students,” Nagao added. The music the instructors will be teaching will have an East Coast Flare as both Guy and Stobbe have lived in that area of Canada for a

number of years. Stobbe is originally from Saskatchewan but has made his home on the East Coast of Canada since 1977. His musical interests lie in the field of traditional music, especially as it is expressed in the wide variety of North American fiddle styles. He plays several instruments including fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and clawhammer banjo. JJ started out by performing at a young age in many shows and dances across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba with his two sisters in a family band. This award winning fiddler competed in and won many fiddling competitions around the prairies including the Saskatchewan Junior & Novice Fiddling Championship. In 1995 he joined the band Highway 49, and free-lanced with many other groups. His years of stage experience keeps him in demand and his busy schedule has allowed him to work with some of the biggest names in the fiddle and acoustic music world. In recent years JJ has played many shows and festivals with the Bluegrass & Old Time group “Lone Tree Road” which just released their debut album “First Mile”. Both organizers explained the students at Gavin Lake loved what they were learning. “They would have their fiddle in their hands all day,” said Dunn. The workshop will be held at the Catholic Church of Sacred Heart 80811th St. S. on March 19-20. For more information about the workshop call either 344-5508 or 344-6981.

Hockey and the Oscars Once again I sit here on a Monday morning finding myself peaking online to see who were the big winners from last nights Oscars and more importantly keeping track of the National Hockey League Deadline trading day. The trade deadline is the start to the final push leading into the playoffs and that of course to me - My Way as a hockey fan is one By Darryl Crane of the best times of the year. Inspiration for hockey passion could easily be found in Golden this weekend as 12 teams faced off in an Atom tournament that had more than its fair share of excitement over three days. Between the great saves that were made and the spectacular goals which led to overtime excitement that nearly led to the roof of the rink being popped off, the kids on the ice showed a passion for the game in its purist form. For me this kind of event is part of the good days at work. You get to go out and snap a few pics at an event full of fun on the ice. But the ice was not the only place this weekend where a good time could be found. In a warmer climate singers and performers from the Golden area put their best Broadway foot forward in the Golden Civic Centre. Both young and old sang, danced and provided some great entertainment for those in attendance. It is not every day where you can go to a show and hear songs performed from Cabaret, The Little Mermaid, Footloose and The Book of Mormon. There were many things to remember from the night from the coy shy side of a fish in the hunt for a kiss, to the humour provided in “I Believe” to one of my favourite songs ever that reminds everyone to Always look on the bright side of life because truer words have never been sung. I know I have said it before but it is worth repeating that I am constantly amazed by the amount of talent and the work people put into cultural activities in this area. And finally on a personal note I have to say well done to the Academy Awards for finally recognizing Christopher Plummer. I do not say this just because he is one of the finest actors that has ever come from Canada but more because he truly deserved to finally get his hands on the golden statuette. Plummer’s stellar career has been going since the 1950s and has included many spectacular performances over the years. To say that was one moment this morning that put a smile on my face would not be an understatement. So congrats to the new Oscar winner.

A big Thank you! Comments: A big Thankyou! To the honest people of Golden and the staff of Tim Hortons on the Hwy. On Saturday February 4 we stopped in Golden at Tim Hortons for lunch. From there we drove west to Sicamous where I discovered that I had left my purse behind in Golden. Once my heart stopped pounding a hundred mph, I phoned Tim Hortons and their staff stopped

my fears by telling me they had my purse with wallet and contents intact. How do you spell RELIEF!! Not only was it there but the helpful staff packaged it up and put it on the bus to be shipped to me in Penticton where it arrived safely a couple days later. Many thanks Golden! You saved my trip!! A strong immune system is the body’s best defense against colds and flu. Good nutrition is key to building your body’s defenses. Help fight common bugs by filling your diet with healthy foods. Load up on fruits and vegetables. They contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which will build up your immune system to help fight off illness. Choose brightly coloured or dark green fruits and veggies for the most antioxidants. Aim for 7 to 8 servings per day. One serving equals one small to medium sized piece of fruit or vegetable or half a cup of chopped. Digestive health plays an important role in preventing sickness. Normally, your body contains “friendly” bacteria, or flora, that help fight off any “bad” bacteria trying to gain access to your system. Diets high in refined sugar, frequent antibiotic use, and everyday stress can disrupt this healthy balance of “friendly” versus “bad” bacteria, leaving one more vulnerable to sickness. You can help restore healthy digestive

flora by eating foods that naturally contain good bacteria and/or by taking a probiotic supplement. Probiotics can be found naturally in fermented foods such as yogurt, buttermilk, miso, tempeh, and fresh sauerkraut. Vitamin D is also thought to play an important role in strengthening the immune system. Health Canada recommends 200600 IU per day depending on age. Some other national health organizations recommend higher doses. For instance the Canadian Cancer Society recommends 1000 IU per day for adults during the fall and winter months. Dietary sources of vitamin D include milk, fortified soy beverage, salmon, tuna, sardines and egg yolks. Talk to your health care provider to learn if you are getting enough Vitamin D. Of course nutrition is only part of the solution. Exercise is also a powerful way to bolster your immune system. Among the many benefits of exercise is stress reduction. Stress takes a significant toll on our immune system so it’s important to take time for yourself. Get out for a brisk walk, bike ride, take part in yoga, or any physical activity that you enjoy!

M.P. Invites Constituents to Nominate Diamond Jubilee Medal Candidates David Wilks, Member of Parliament for Kootenay Columbia delivered the following statement. On February 6th, 2012 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II marked the 60th anniversary of her accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada – an occasion marked only once before by her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria in 1887. To celebrate Her Majesty’s 60 years of selfless service and devotion to duty, Governor General David Johnston has announced the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal as a visible and tangible way to recognize outstanding Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life. These medals provide an opportunity to honour exceptional Canadians for their contributions to their fellow citizens, to our

abroad that brings credit to Canada; and - Be alive on February 6th , 2012, the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. Eric St-Laurent Trio comes to the Island Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Island Restaurant is bringing in some live entertainment for you on Tuesday March 6. The Eric St-Laurent Trio, fronted by Eric St-Laurent will be filling the restaurant with their subversive and distinct new sound. The trio also includes percussionist Michael DeQuevedo and bassist Jordan O’Connor, as well as St-Laurent on guitar. The three create a unique sound that combines jazz and blues, afro-cuban rhythms, rock guitar, cinematic soundscapes and blues phrasing. Formed in 2008, the Eric St-Laurent Trio brings together three musicians with very different backgrounds to create that unique sound. St-Laurent, who had spent a decade overseas in Berlin performing and recording with some of Europe’s biggest names, set out to assemble a new band to perform the music he’s been writing. The music reflects the iconic Canadian experience of cultural groups meeting and interacting, setting to song the free exchange of new ideas and mish-mash of cultures Canada itself is celebrated for.

The trio embodies that philosophy, as all three have different backgrounds and bring a unique cultural aspect to the group. St-Laurent was born and raised in Montreal, and has been featured on more than 50 recordings, produced multiple albums, composed scores for short films and theatre, and toured extensively in Europe and Canada. He also studied improvisation in New York. DeQuevedo was born in Mexico before moving to Toronto, where he currently resides. He has been playing the drums since he was a small child, and has toured Italy, Chile, Mexico, Cuba, the United States and Canada with celebrated artists such as Grammy winner Julieta Venega. O’Connor is an Ottawa native who has been living and performing in Toronto for the past 13 years. He is classically trained, yet has a background in heavy metal and has been composing for a variety of ensembles as well as for film. The group has just released a new album called Ruby, and some of its songs can be previewed at www.ericstlaurent.com. The Eric St-Laurent Trio will be performing at the Island Restaurant at 7 p.m. on Tuesday March 6.

Looking back at the past century Colleen Palumbo Turning Back the Pages Well, here we are firmly into 2012. I had a look through the index for the Golden Star to discover that lots of interesting things happened here in 1912. I will work my way through some of them but the one that I will share with you this week is the building of the first all concrete building in Golden, B.C. Concrete hadn’t been widely used in the area before that time for a couple of different reasons. We had lots of timber being the first and the second was the cost of getting the cement to Golden. In 1892, C.W. Field started Field’s Drug Store in Golden, B.C. and then decided that he wanted to go back to Toronto to study medicine so he put his drug store up for sale in 1901. John Andrew Buckham bought that drug store from Mr. Field. J.A. became a well-known citizen in Golden. John and his brother George Buckham, as well as other siblings were born at the Ankrum Farm in Carlton County, Ontario. When George was just seven years old he, he was walking barefoot and got a cut on his foot. Blood poisoning soon set in and after several operations it was determined that the only way to save his life was to amputate his leg, which they did, at the hip. This meant that for the rest of his life he walked with a single crutch and that many jobs were outside his ability, so when his brother John encouraged him to become a pharmacist it seemed like the right move. George graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy in 1906 and before he could head to Golden to join his brother he contacted scarlet fever and spent some time recuperating with his Aunt Jessie. By the time George arrived in Golden, John had made the decision to expand the pharmacy business and opened a store in Field, BC. That same year he added an addition on to the front of his store. This addition was on the street side of the building and brought the building out flush with the street.

George operated the store in Field, BC until 1911 when he went back to Almonte, Ontario and married Jean MacFarlane. This was the same year that the Drug Store in Golden burned down. Determined not to have that happen again John and George decided to build the new store out of concrete. They probably had no way of knowing that this would mean the store would be standing in Golden 100 years later. George brought his bride back to Golden and took over the new store. One of the first problems that the brothers encountered with the new concrete building was that it smelled funny, not awful, just a different smell than anyone was used to! Even the dogs were affected and would cross the street to lift their legs on the side of the building. The enterprising brothers installed a couple of copper plates. One plate on the building, and one on the sidewalk. They hooked the plates up to a battery and when they saw the dogs lift their legs they threw the switch. The slightest bit of moisture gave the dog a shock and it wasn’t long before the local dogs had learned their lesson and stopped. Over the years there were many changes to the business. When the jewellery store went out of business the pharmacy sold jewellery. It also sold stationary for a time as well as liquor. Of course you had to purchase liquor with a prescription. Recently it has been brought to my attention that the old safe from the J.A. Buckham drug store is stored safely away in a nearby store. It’s a fabulous huge double door safe where they would have stored he drugs for the store. The massive forest fire of 1926, pushed Golden through the most difficult financial times it has ever faced and George Buckham made the decision to move his family to Duncan, B.C. John sold the pharmacy in Golden in 1931. Today you can still stop in to the old store, which is home today to Bacchus Books. Check out its unique character, its truly a Golden landmark!

Golden Secondary School students learn about Fire/rescue departments Golden Secondary School Fire Academy submitted The GSS Fire Academy is back up and running for 2012. Seventeen Grade 11/12 students are currently enrolled and are learning the basics of structural firefighting under the instruction of Michael Archibald. Mr. Archibald is teacher at GSS as well as a member of Golden Fire/Rescue. This is the fourth group of students to com-

plete the program in the past five years. Students receive hands-on training in basic structural firefighting skills as well as learning the basic fundamentals of fire fighting. As a semestered course, they also receive four credits towards their graduation. The purpose of the program is to show students what Fire/Rescue departments are all about and that this is a viable career option for them. Over the past five years, a number of cadets who fin-

ished the program have either joined the Golden Fire/Rescue service or gone on to other careers as paramedics or into law enforcement. This is a unique program in the province of British Columbia and has received recognition from the Office of the Provincial Fire Commissioner for providing students with this opportunity. By the end of the program students have received enough instruction to safely control and contain a controlled dumpster fire.

You Matter Assembly, Sports Teams, School Musical Ian Robinson Principal Lady Grey Elementary and Field Elementary Lady Grey Happenings At Lady Grey we look forward to an eventful time between now and Spring Break. On Feb. 14 several of our students gave presentations at a “You Matter Assembly.” This assembly was in preparation for our Spirit Day: “ Pink Shirt Day” where students and staff were encouraged to wear pink to support anti-bullying, anti-discrimination, and anti-homophobia. We also held a Science Fair Day on Feb. 20 where students displayed their Science Fair projects in preparation for the Regional Science Fair in Cranbrook which was held on February 22 and 23. Our Grade 7s have completed their cross-country skiing at the Dawn Mountain Trails earlier this month and will be participating in the “Big Day Out” in early March with Grade 7s from Nicholson at Camp Wenman. This is one of two days to help prepare our Grade 7s for the transition into Golden Secondary School this fall. A big thank you goes out to our staff, community volunteers and parents who make these activities a reality. Rehearsals are underway for our play this year called “No Strings Attached.” Mrs. Calladine and her crew of school and community helpers are busy getting ready for the performances in March.

The Grade 6/7 basketball team is preparing for their first game today against Windermere. The wrestling team also made a trip to Canal Flats where they had a friendly match with the local team. They were rewarded with lots of laughs and look forward to meeting the team again after Spring Break. A reminder that Grade 4 and Grade 7 parents should have received a letter about the Ministry Parent Satisfaction Survey from your child. Please follow the instructions on the letter to complete the survey on line. If you need to use a computer or have any questions please contact the school at 344-6317. In closing, I would like to thank our Parent Advisory Council for all the hard work they do to make our school the best it can be. In particular, thanks to our PAC and parents in organizing our lunch program and Judy Kardash our PAC President for our School Logo clothing sale. Field School Happenings Field has been a happening place! We have a student teacher from the University of Calgary with us until Spring Break. We have been taking cross-country ski lessons at the Natural Bridge and now we are taking skating lessons in Golden. As well, we celebrated being at school for 100 days and Valentine’s Day. February is flying by and although it’s snowing right now we are excited that spring is just around the corner!

Students also receive CPR certification and, if they choose, can preempt some of the entrance requirements into the College of the Rockies Fire Certification Program in Cranbrook. Many thanks go to the members of Golden Fire/Rescue who continually volunteer their time and skills to assist with the program. Without their contributions, the program would not be the success it has become.

GET PUMPED TODAY

Why should we pump out septic tanks? t Avoid costly repairs; regular maintenance is cost effective compared to replacing your septic system. t It could stop working at the most inconvenient time (middle of winter, or a part, etc.) t Save the environment; a full (or malfunctioning) tank could saturate and pollute the surrounding area, including creeks, ponds, and lakes. This could give off a foul smell, affecting the neighbourhood t Tanks close to the surface could freeze during the winter months if not used regularly t Septic tanks not used regularly also tend to fill quicker as the bacterial action stops working when not used (part-time users t should have their tanks pumped just as often as full time users) t Your septic system is designed to last a very long time if maintained properly.

TANKS SHOULD BE PUMPED EVERY 3 YEARS

Atoms collide in Golden final

The Golden Rams Atoms hosted a 12-team tournament this weekend that brought in hockey players from British Columbia and Alberta. The Rams made it to the final on Sunday afternoon, after a spectacular semi-final overtime win on Saturday. In the Gold medal game they faced a team from Ponoka, and won it 6-3 in a back and forth game in front a lively crowd at the Golden Arena. Darryl Crane/Star Photo

Fresh snow welcomes skiers at GKHAT race Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Kicking Horse Alpine Team hosted a race this weekend up at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort that saw more than 80 skiers compete. The sun may not have been out, but there was 12 centimetres of fresh snow, and the temperature was hovering at a perfect -2 degrees as the skiers from Golden, Revelstoke and Kimberley took to the course on Feb. 25. "The weather was great this year. The fresh snow makes it a little bit trickier in the race, but we managed fine, and the kids love it. They like playing in the snow and having fun," said head coach of GKHAT Pam Tetrault. The weather made it a bit tricky for some of the athletes who were travelling to compete as well. "We had a few people from Revelstoke who couldn't come because of the weather. But we still had a good turnout," said Tetrault. "We had probably around 80 kids, and just over half, so about 50 to 60 kids, are part of GKHAT." The event was split into two races, one in the morning for the E1 kids, which is ages four to eight, and one in the afternoon for the E2 kids, which is ages nine to 12. "They did two runs through the course, and then the best time out of the two runs is taken towards the awards," said Tetrault. A podium was set up in front of GHKAT's new clubhouse yurt to hand out the medals to the young athletes. "The kids did great," said Tetrault. "I'm very happy with how they competed. As long as they're happy, I'm happy." The club has travelled to a few competitions this season already and performed quite well, but this is the first and only race of the year they got to host at home. "It's really nice for them to be able to compete at home. A lot of them don't get the opportunity to travel, the costs are a little higher. So it's nice that all the kids in the program get to compete in this race," said Tetrault. "We have a couple more races coming up. There's one in Kimberley, one at Sun Peaks in Kamloops, and one more in Lake Louise as well."

Young skiers from Golden, Revelstoke and Kimberley have some fun in front of the Golden Kicking Horse Alpine Team yurt as they are presented with medals won from a day of ski racing. Jessica Schwitek/ Star Photo

The Golden Secondary School bantam boys basketball team put together another solid weekend of play at the Kicking Horse Classic tournament played in Golden on Feb. 24-25. The team hustled all weekend and is now preparing to head to the East Kootenay Championships in Fernie. Darryl Crane/Star Photo

Bantam boys rule on at GSS tournament Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Secondary School bantam boys basketball team once again showed why they are one of the top teams in the Kootenays when they won their final home tournament of the season. The team put together three straight wins in what was a great tournament leading into the East Kootenay Finals which will be held in Fernie on March 8-10 Assistant Head Coach for the team, Kindy Gosal, was very happy with the team’s performance. “Yeah they played well and we won. They are a young group being grade eight and they have lots to learn. They are an excellent group of kids. They are really improving every

time they come out, he said. One of the reasons Gosal felt the tournament was a good test for the team was because the visiting teams were all so balanced. Head Coach Manjit Dhami thought the team saved its best defensive game of the tournament for the last one against a strong team from David Thompson High School in Invermere. He also added the team had worked hard all year to become better as a group. “They are a really good bunch of kids. Very friendly, backing each other up all the time. They do not let anybody down, he said. Gosal believes one of the reasons they have been successful this year is the team’s desire to learn the game so they could become stronger players.

TODAY’S ANSWERS

Two losses in Fernie to start the playoffs means the Golden Rockets are in a do-or-die situation when they come back home for games 3 and 4 in their seven-game series against the Ghostriders. They had a very tough start to the series with a 6-1 loss in game 1 on Friday Feb. 24 at the Fernie Memorial Arena. The Rockets were outshot 16-6 in the first period, but held the score at 1-0 heading into the first intermission after a power play goal from Fernie's Dylan Robertson. The Ghostriders strengthened their lead in the second period with goals from Connor McLaughlin and Stefan Seel, putting them up by three after 40 minutes. The third period didn't get any better for Golden. Fernie scored three strait before the Rockets got their first and only goal of the night from Carson George. A fight in the third period got Golden's Bryden Marsh and Fernie's Brendon Mangone tossed from the game. Golden put in a much stronger showing on Saturday Feb. 25 at the Fernie Memorial Arena, but it wasn't enough to keep the top-ranked team in the Eddie Mountain Division from beating them 4-2. The Ghostrider's Evan Burgess scored first on the power play when Rockets defenceman Coltin Berard was sent to the box for a blow to the head. Golden was able to capitalize on a power play

opportunity later in the period as well when Jacob Bergeron beat goalie Fraser Abdallah. There was some confusion on the ice as play kept going after the goal, and Fernie carried the puck to the other end and scored. After some deliberation the referee called Bergeron's shot a good goal, which left the game tied at one after 20 minutes. Fernie took back the lead in the second period. Alex Milhouse beat goaltender Jarrod Schammerhorn at 10:11. Both Golden and Fernie were given a power play opportunity in the middle frame, but neither team was able to take advantage of it. After being outshot 13-7 in the second period, the play was much more evenly matched in the third. Golden’s Berard redeamed himself for the goalcosting penalty he took early in the game. In the third period he tied the game up at two at 6:51. The Rockets could not hold on long enough to make it to overtime, as Ghostrider Connor McLaughlin put his team up by one at 3:32. McLaughlin struck again, scoring with less than a minute left in the game to put a final nail in the Rockets’ coffin. Fernie is now leading the series 2-0, and will be in Golden to play Games 3 and 4 on Monday Feb. 27 and Tuesday Feb. 28. Due to publication deadlines, the Golden Star was unable to print the results of those games. But all scores will be available on the paper’s website at www.thegoldenstar.net.

Star COMMUNITY

A world with clean water Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net

Two local girls have decided they want to do what they can to make sure that people all over the world have clean drinking water. According to Turn on the Tap, an organization run through Samaritans’s Purse, there are 884 million people in the world who struggle with finding access to a safe water supply. Every year 1.4 million children die from diarrhoeal diseases, diseases that are transmitted through contaminated water. Unsafe water sources that people are forced to use every day are killing thousands. “We have a goal to raise $1,000 which will buy 10 water filters. And each water filter will provide clean safe drinking water for six to eight people for life, said Melissa Lavoie. Lavoie and her friend Kristin Libby have decided to do a 5 km walk and fundraise to contribute to Turn on the Tap. “Kristin was organizing it, and she emailed me and asked me if I was interested and wanted to help her fundraise. So I came up with the idea to do a garage sale the week before our walk, said Lavoie. “I have been asking for donations, but I think I’m pretty much covered already. People have been bringing me lots of stuff. The garage sale will have various items including clothing, kids clothing, toys, household items, a desk, a TV, lots of books, some movies, and just a little bit of everything. “Both Kristin and I participate in Operation Christmas Child, which is also through Samaritan’s Purse, so we are both familiar with the organization, said Lavoie. “Kristin is the one who chose this project, but I was more than willing to help out. And water is such a good cause, it saves so many lives. The girls will be walking five kms on March 10 carrying five litres of water each. They will be starting at Golden Secondary School, and anyone who wants to join them is welcome. The garage sale will be taking place on March 3 at 330 Fisher Road in the Amenity Room, from 9 a.m. until the early afternoon, depending on how much stuff is left. Lavoie is also accepting monetary donations for the cause, and she can be reached at 344-1711 for a donation form and a tax receipt for donations over $15. Recycling is Working! Golden, stand tall. It has been 8 months since we started our curb-side recycling program. By mid March we will have shipped (diverted) over 86 tons of material out of the community and estimate Golden recycles approximately 2.2 tons of material per week! Landfill costs are tracking downward as a result. These are fantastic preliminary statistics and we will continue to update you as we monitor these trends. Many thanks to our residents, and our fantastic partners in this venture: VP Waste Solutions Ltd., and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. Golden Fire-Rescue Department is Recruiting Our Fire Chief is looking for enthusiastic, fit, and available residents keen to become members of his department. Men and women 18-45 who live or work within a few minutes of the fire station are ideal. Tuesday evening training sessions are mandatory. Tongue in cheek, Chief McClure says work conditions are “hard with unusual hours including bad weather, extreme temperatures, low pay, and occasional high stress. Rewards include new skills, friends, adventure, satisfaction, teamwork, confidence and pride”. Consider being a part of one of the community’s most necessary and important on-call services. Give the chief a call or visit the fire station at 107-11th Ave. South.
