Teachers’ right to strike taken away

by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Teachers had their right to hold a legal walkout taken away Tuesday as the provincial government tabled legislation putting them back to work and ending their ongoing six-month job action.

The provincial government introduced Bill 22 Tuesday afternoon. It suspends the teachers’ union strike action, while calling on a mediator to help the two sides reach a negotiated agreement.

The legislation extends the previous teacher contract to cover the mediation period, with the goal of reaching a negotiated agreement by the beginning of summer. If there is no agreement, then the mediator will issue a report by June 30 with non-binding recommendations.

A

ndrew Van Baarsen cringes when he hears those hateful words so many gay teens dread.

Sometimes they are directed at him, sometimes they are just part of the everyday conversations between students that fill the halls of his school, and many others like it. In either case, the affect is the same.

“Every day, you hear the word ‘fag’ tossed around, or ‘gay’,” Van Baarsen says.

“People use these words, and they really don’t get the implications.”

For many gay students, the flippant and derogatory use of those words reinforces the belief that there is something wrong with being homosexual, he explains, and leaves them feeling ostracized and alone.

Van Baarsen, a Grade 12 student at Thomas Haney secondary in Maple Ridge, came out as gay three years ago.

He is one of a couple dozen students at Thomas Haney who make up the Fruit Salad Organization. The group is a place of refuge for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, as well as their “straight allies.”

Today the group will be participating in Pink Shirt Day anti-bullying campaign and encouraging fellow students to stop using hateful language, and stop the bullying of gay teens.

Bullying is a way of life for many gay teens, explains Fruit Salad member Nathan Knowles, as he found out first hand.

When one of his friends posted on Facebook about gay rights, Knowles commented to show his support.

That sparked an angry tirade of abuse from an older relative of the friend.

“Here’s this 47-year-old adult telling me that he hopes I get AIDS and calling me a fag,” said Knowles. “Why do I deserve to get some disease that would most likely kill me because I’m willing to stand

up for kids who don’t have a voice of their own?”

The abuse many gay teens suffer is beyond mere bullying, says Knowles.

“We’re talking about people getting picked on for who they are, for something they have no control over,” he says, likening it to racism.

Unlike homosexuality, homophobia is a choice, Van Baarsen stresses.

“No one is born homophobic,” he says. “Someone has taught them that. Someone has taught them to hate.”

For many gay teens, grow-

ing up means pretending to be someone they aren’t.

It means changing the way they talk and how they act and how they dress, so they don’t attract attention.

It’s about survival, says Van Baarsen, and the abuse can come from all corners, including one’s own family.

While Van Baarsen and Knowles’ parents were both supportive of them coming out as gay, many other teens in their position aren’t so lucky.

Earlier this year, Van Baarsen was approached by

a Grade 9 student at another school who came out to him as gay, and asked him for his advice.

“Given his situation, I told him it was safer for him to stay in the closet until he’s done school,” he says. “It sucks I have to tell someone that, but he was safer that way.”

For some, the bullying can be so destructive, that it leads to suicide.

Van Baarsen admits he had suicidal thoughts when he was younger and struggling to come to grips with his own sexuality.

“You think there must be something wrong with you,” he says.

And the bullying just reinforces that belief.

According to the University of Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, close to a third of all lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth will contemplate or attempt suicide,

compared to just seven per cent of all Canadian youth.

In all, close to 600 youth between age 10 and 24 die by suicide every year in Canada.

“Kids are dying,” says Van Baarsen. “But some people just block that out.”

Kathryn Ferguson is an English teacher at Thomas Haney, and founded the group last year. Ferguson said she watched one of her best friends get bullied mercilessly in high school for his perceived homosexuality, and wanted to offer gay teens at Thomas Haney a safe haven and a chance to advocate to make life better.

“There’s safety in numbers,” she says. “Here they can be who they are and feel comfortable and safe.

“These kids are incredibly brave, I’m super proud of them.”

Earlier this school year, the

Fruit Salad Organization collected more than 200 signatures for its Lemon Pledge, where students at the school pledged to be tolerant and accepting of all their fellow students, regardless of sexuality or gender.

This week, the Fruit Salad Organization, along with similar groups from Samuel Robertson Technical and Maple Ridge secondary schools, are encouraging Maple Ridge-Pitt MeadowsSchool District trustees to adopt a policy to help protect gay teens at local school schools.

Knowles says that specific policies have already been adopted by more than 15 districts across the province.

The Fruit Salad Organization is currently circulating a petition at the school supporting the proposed policy, and hope to bring hundreds of student signatures to the school board’s meeting Wednesday.

“There’s more and more people standing up and saying they support us,” says Knowles.

Van Baarsen, for one, says the group efforts have helped to improve the culture at the school by helping students realize gay teens are people too, and deserve respect.

“It’s definitely better, especially with younger students,” he says. “Not so much in the community.”

Fruit Salad member Leah Bedford says that for the bullying of gay teens to stop, everyone has to do their part.

“If you see someone being bullied, stand up, do the right thing, and say, ‘Stop, this is wrong’,” Bedford says.

Unfortunately, the stigma of being gay is so great, that it discourages many to intervene.

“There’s a worry someone might question their sexual identity,” says Knowles.

“And people don’t want to put the energy into dealing with the problem, that would mean they’d have to look at their own behaviour.”

Ferguson hopes to see a day when the Fruit Salad Organization isn’t necessary, when the question of one’s sexual identity is irrelevant.

“It takes a strong person to do what’s right, as opposed to what’s popular,” she says.

“But our numbers are growing ... and that makes it a little more difficult for bullies.”

Under the order, Irving could also have 28 days leave within that year, when he would be placed in a supportive living facility in order to see if he would be suitable for later placement in the community.

While under that trial period, he’d have to undergo daily testing for alcohol use.

He could also get unsupervised access outside the hospital, depending on his risk assessment.

Irving said he was “extremely sorry� for what happened. “I know I have changed their lives.�

But Hillaby said the victims remain devastated. Maija-Liisa Corbett, 19, and Hysehim Oh, 46, were killed in the Halu Sushi crash when Irving’s truck plowed through the restaurant’s front window.

Irving sat facing the Review Board panel, dressed in jeans, T-shirt and white running shoes with Velcro fasteners, anked by his lawyer and caseworker.

He said that when he drank in the past year, he “decided to drink.� “I don’t have cravings.�

He said he doesn’t drink in public, but in his own home. “I get bored. I get lonely. I don’t know what to do with myself. I guess that’s my outlet.�

He wanted to travel across Canada and said he’s been working for 30 years. “So it’s time to see the world. “I just wish it would be over so I can get on with

life and just continue with life and be happy.

I’m just sad now.�

During the hearing, Irving’s psychiatrist in Cranbrook, Richard Magee, said a CT scan of Irving’s brain showed an injury the size of a quarter, adding that under Irving’s ďŹ rst year in the community he was closely supervised and had close family support. “There was considerable surveillance on him.

Under these conditions, we were able to maintain sobriety.�

But once supervision relaxed in 2011 in the second year of his conditional discharge, “he went back to it [booze] fairly easily and fairly readily.�

The Review Board heard that Irving has since been kicked out of his brother’s house and both his brother and mother believe hospital is the best place for him.

Under the Criminal Code, for someone considered not criminally responsible, a Review Board can order an absolute discharge, a conditional discharge or detention in a hospital.

Hillaby pointed out the initial order wasn’t for someone who was drinking and driving. “This is a disposition of a guy who was trying not to drink.�

Magee said Irving had two lapses in October and another at Christmas, when his supervisors knew he had a bottle of booze. As for the incident in early January, when Irving tested for a blood-alcohol level of 0.4, Magee called that

an “extreme level.� “This fellow is essentially a lifelong alcoholic.

I don’t think there’s a whole lot of insight [about the implications of his drinking] here.�

There is “an extraordinarily high likelihood of relapse at this point.�

Magee, though, couldn’t say whether Irving’s frontal lobe brain injury has reduced his impulse control.

Irving’s treating psychiatrist at the hospital, Dr. LeeAnne Meldrum, said his brain injury could affect his impulse control and that Irving was showing some symptoms of frontal lobe damage. Test results for which the hospital is waiting should conďŹ rm that he’d need a high level of supervision, she said.

She also pointed out that a blood-alcohol reading of 0.25 could require medical treatment in many people.

Irving also told her last month that he wanted to get his driver’s licence back, return to his apartment and travel across Canada.

But Irving would require drugs to ensure he didn’t go into withdrawal because of abstaining from alcohol, she pointed out.

Hillaby said Irving was motivated by contrition in the ďŹ rst year of conditional discharge, but now “he wants to see the world. “This seems like a markedly different attitude from before.â€?

His caseworker at the hospital also said recently he hasn’t shown “a lot

of empathy towards the victims. “It’s more focused on how his life has been affected.�

Irving also said he’d like to continue with his Alcohol Anonymous program. “They understand what’s going on with my life and they can relate.�

He said he’d be interested in living in the community in a place where he can get help and “try to solve this problem that I have.�

Irving’s father died last year and Irving had permission to drive to the Lower Mainland for his funeral. His case manager said via teleconference that Irving had been drinking while driving at that time, although Irving has said he wasn’t intoxicated. His licence later was revoked for a second time.

While in the Lower Mainland, he also saw his children. “That was quite an ordeal actually,�

Irving said.

He added that alcoholism is not an easy problem to solve and said earlier he’ll do whatever he has to solve his drinking problem. “I don’t know whether I would go out there and drive again. I have no idea. I hope I never will drink again.�

He thinks about the crash at Halu Sushi every day, but said if he dwells on it, he gets depressed. “You don’t sound very conďŹ dent about your ability to stay away from alcohol,â€? replied Review Board member Kim Polowek.

Second candidate steps forward for local NDP Korleen Carreras works for BCGEU, on arts council

by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter It’s going to be a contest in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows about who represents the NDP next election.

Korleen Carreras said Thursday she’ll be trying for the nomination, against Elizabeth Rosenau.

Carreras is the former owner and artistic director of the Port Moody School of Dance and currently works at the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union. She currently sits on the board of the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Arts Council and is a member of the Pitt Meadows Community Association.

She lives in Pitt Meadows with her husband Diego and two sons, Mateo, age 11, and Emilio, age 6.

She says she wants restore “integrity and fairness in the legislature and ultimately we need to elect a NDP government to accomplish that,” she said in a release.

Constituency association president Craig Speirs is glad the nomination will be contested, saying both would make good candidates and will give the party an even chance to hold the riding in the spring 2013 provincial election, after current MLA Michael Sather steps down.

NDP policy requires that candidates who follow a MLA’s resignation must be female, a member of a visible minority or lesbiangay-bisexual or transgendered.

However, nomination dates have yet to be set.

Those could take place either this spring or fall, said Speirs.

He pointed out that if Terry Carreras Becker has to contest the Liberal nomination with Maple Ridge Coun.

Michael Morden, there could be two nomination contests before the election. Morden has yet to make his decision on whether to pursue that.

“Korleen has a diverse background as a business owner, community activist, and as a trade unionist.”

“Either of them would be good candidates from the right and we’d have a good tilt here,” Speirs said.

Bullying hurts Today is Pink Shirt Day in B.C. and other parts of Canada, an annual anti-bullying event that raises awareness of the need for action against bullying.

The message of this event is that bullying hurts. It isn’t just a rite of passage and it doesn’t have to happen.

According to www.bullyingcanada.ca, as many as 25 per cent of children in Grades 4-6 have been bullied and approximately one in 10 children have bullied others.

A 2004 study published in the Medical Journal of Pediatrics found that about one in seven Canadian children aged 11 to 16 are victims of bullying. It is important to recognize what bullying is and that it happens in many forms – verbally, socially, physically and one (cyber bullying).

Wearing pink on Pink Shirt Day shows people are making the commitment to not let bullying happen. B.C. has seen its share of bullying tragedy. Fourteen-year-old Hamed Nastoh of Surrey jumped off the Patullo Bridge and killed himself leaving a note behind blaming constant bullying he endured at school. Another 14-yearold , Dawn-Marie Wesley of Mission, committed suicide by hanging herself after relentless bullying.

The province has taken steps to address bullying in recent years, including a Ministry of Education resource brochure for parents in 14 languages that can be found online at www.bced. gov.bc.ca/sco.

Key elements of preventing bullying include fostering self-esteem, social engagement, academic success, inclusion, acceptance, respect for self and others and connection to community.

Taxing times for B.C. government VICTORIA – Before this week’s budget debate is drowned out by the shouting over the teachers’ dispute, here’s a look at the main points and the arguments unfolding around them.

The setting for Finance Minister Kevin Falcon’s first budget B.C. Views is what he dreaded when Premier Christy Tom Fletcher Clark handed him the job. Recovery is painfully slow, with mining and petroleum growing and forest products struggling to hold and build on gains made in Asia. This and the $3 billion dismantling of the harmonized sales tax moved Falcon to limit overall spending growth to an average of two per cent for the next three years. That means little or no increase to all areas except health care, education and social assistance.

Despite holding the line on public service pay and not replacing 2,000 positions over the next three years, Clark and Falcon had to postpone the elimination of the 2.5-per-cent small business income tax to get to a balanced budget by 2013. And Falcon has again dangled the prospect of raising general corporate income tax from 10 to 11 per cent, but not until 2014.

Business experts applauded the hard line on spending, noting the contrast with Alberta’s big spending and Ontario’s big spending hangover.

NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston says

Falcon’s two-per-cent spending target is “unrealistic,” and the whole program is motivated mostly by two by-elections this year and a general election next year. He said the proposal to raise general business taxes is a repeat of his effort to save the HST, and it won’t happen if the B.C. Liberals win in 2013.

B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins made the bizarre claim that it’s an NDP-style “tax and spend” budget, and inaccurately accused Falcon of raising taxes on small business. He also joined the NDP chorus of outrage over ICBC, B.C. Hydro and medical premium increases.

Some other hot topics in the budget: • Selling assets. The big one here is B.C.’s liquor wholesaling monopoly, run out of warehouses in Kamloops and Vancouver. Falcon insists the private sector does this kind of work more efficiently, and union contracts will be protected in a bidding process. The NDP argues that selling off a monopoly puts this government cash cow at risk, and points to private retail stores with higher prices and lower wages.

The proposed sale of 100 surplus Crown properties has raised cries of “selling the silverware to buy groceries.” But land sales are nothing new for governments, and Falcon prefers that to raising taxes.

• Carbon tax. The last scheduled increase goes ahead in July, adding another penny on a litre of gasoline, followed by a freeze and review of the whole climate program. Ralston says the climate plan is “in tatters,” along with dozens of other policy areas that are also under review after 11 years of B.C.

Liberal rule.

NDP leader Adrian Dix vows to keep the carbon tax and its offsetting personal income tax cuts, direct carbon tax revenues to transit and rural energy-saving retrofits, and hike the general corporate tax rate from 10 to 12 per cent to pay for it.

• HST. Asked what he would have done as finance minister, Ralston suggested getting rid of the HST sooner. Dix continues to misrepresent the HST as solely a transfer to big business, ignoring the small and medium-sized businesses that have a year left to take advantage of input tax credits.

Simon Fraser University economist Jon Kesselman has estimated that poor people will be worse off when the HST ends, while the rest of us will see a very small net benefit.

Every commuter that uses this ‘back route’ knows how desperate this roadway is for improvements. This is the second person to be killed by a vehicle on this back road in the past six months. The road isn’t wide enough for pedestrians, cyclists and horses. All drivers commuting on this road need to remember that the speed limit is 50 [km/h], not 80.

How many more people are going to die on this road before someone in a position to do something, does something? Let’s put some of those ideas that have been pushed around on paper for years into road improvements.

Our mayor and council don’t seem to have the nerve to stand up to TransLink and say enough is enough.

Our mayor also seems to think a raise in municipal taxes is doable for seniors on fixed incomes.

Time for truths about teachers EDITOR, THE NEWS:

I find it hard to believe that the public would buy into the disrespectful teacher bashing by our government. It tells stories about the lack of government report cards and meetings being so harmful to our students. It’s time for some truths.

My 220 parents are better informed than they were with report cards. Through email, my parents are guided to student planners that contain the marks for every assignment for every course they are taking (unlike government report cards). The parents sign the planner to show they are aware exactly where their child is. They know what the expectations are and whether their child is on track, behind or ahead.

All grade 12 marks have been posted for scholarship and post secondary needs.

Meetings are still happening, Teachers meet collaboratively with each other, as well as with other support staff.

Meeting with parents has never stopped. Teachers have been in touch with many parents by phone, email and in person since September.

As for doing my job, I still prepare lessons, teach, assess (two hours every night), contact parents and meet colleagues to work out plans for struggling students.

My students have not suffered because of job action.

As for my classes, the government lack of proper funding is hurting kids. My grade 8s are 30 to a class with special needs and international students who barely speak English. My communication 11 and 12 classes are made up of many international, SPED and teens at risk. There is no time to give each one the attention they need, so it is watered down trying to give each one their share.

The international students are not kids to the boards or the government; they are big dollar bills. These kids come to a strange country,

living with strangers, cannot speak the language and have no friends. These kids arrive with the same issues (learning, emotional, social) that our kids have, but because they are not funded by the government, they do not qualify for the resources our kids get. I have several stories that would break your heart, but nobody seems to care except the home-stay parents and school staffs.

Boards are forced to become businesses because of underfunding.

There are many teachers changing professions or leaving the province because there is little to keep them here. They come out of university with huge debts. They can only look forward to being in a dead-end job. They have to fight for respect. I have 10 years of university training and 25 years experience. Yet, I am being told how to do my job by non-educators.

Man killed by truck identified staff reporter Police have identiďŹ ed the 40-year-old man who was killed Friday morning when hit by a truck while crossing a street in Maple Ridge.

Steven James Ratfat, 40, was crossing 128th Avenue at Laity Street, walking north, when he was hit by a Dodge pickup travelling east around 6:30 a.m.

RCMP said Ratfat had no ďŹ xed address, but had recently relocated to Maple Ridge.

They believe he was in a marked crosswalk struck by the eastbound truck. At the time, it was raining heavily, and the visibility in this area was poor, with only one

overhead light.

The pickup truck, a white Dodge Ram with ladders on the back, had damage to the front hood.

Articles of the man’s clothing including shoes, hat and glasses were strewn on the road, circled in red paint for investigative purposes, while the body remained covered in a yellow tarp a while after the collision.

The road is a narrow, heavily used commuter route and there are only stop signs on Laity Street at the intersection, although the crosswalk is painted on the road.

Police are still investigating. No charges have

‘There’s just no room in the budget’ for some parents? Probably not.”

Abbott made good on his promise last week to legislate an end to teacher job action following a report stating a negotiated agreement between the government’s bargaining agent and the BCTF would be unlikely. However, he decided against imposing a new contract on teachers, instead opting for mediation, per the BCTF’s request.

“We are hopeful that a mediator can help the parties achieve a negotiated agreement, in keeping with the more than 100 agreements already achieved under the government’s bargaining mandate,” Abbott said.

Local teachers took to the streets Monday morning in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge to protest Abbott’s announcement last week that he intended to end their job action. The protests were part of a province-wide day of

action organized by the BCTF. Serra characterized the province’s decision to legislate the end to teacher job action and impose a contract as a bully tactic.

“Wednesday,February 29th is Pink Shirt Day, a day that highlights that bullying never solves anything, and yet here we have a premier who herself, before she became premier promoted this day, and now she is doing exactly that, trying to bully us by forcing a contract upon us,” he said.

However, Maple Ridge-Misson Liberal MLA Marc Dalton said he doesn’t see the government budging from its zero-net mandate position.

“There’s just no room in the budget,” he said.

Due to so-called “Me too” clauses in other public employee contracts, any pay increase given to teachers in the first two years of a

contract would apply to those public employees, as well.

“The fiscal pressures would be too much to allow that,” said Dalton, himself a former teacher. “Fifty per cent of government expenditures is salaries.”

Dalton said should teachers accept the Liberal government’s netzero mandate and allow their wages to be frozen for the next two years, the government would be in a better position to offer wage increases in the future.

“We believe it will leave room down the road to make improvements,” he said. “If we continue to build up debt, it reduces out ability to make those improvements.”

The BCTF contends the net-zero mandate amounts to a pay cut, with inflation continuing to rise, and has the support of other major labour groups in the province.

Teachers from front “We hope the teachers’ union will take a constructive approach and respect the cooling off period,” said Education Minister George Abbott. “However, if they choose a different path, the legislation includes stiff financial consequences for illegal strike action.”

B.C. teachers have been taking part in work-to-rule job action since the beginning of the school year after contract talks with the province’s bargaining agent broke down.

Teachers have been without a contract since June.

The Liberal government’s legislation came just hours after teachers won the right to strike when the B.C. Labour Relations Board ruled they could take part in a three-day walkout, provided they give at least two days notice before taking to the picket lines. After that, teachers would have been allowed to withdraw their services for one day a week.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation had asked the Labour Relations Board for an interim order Monday night, allowing teachers to withdraw instruction for four days a week, for two weeks.

The LRB’s decision becomes a moot point, however, once the Liberal government’s bill is enacted later this week, and teachers will lose that right to legally strike.

But that may not stop teachers from heading to the picket lines.

“In 2005, we walked out anyways,” said Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association president George Serra. “So we’re not closing the door on a walkout.”

Any strike action by teachers after Bill 22 becomes law would be considered illegal, and the BCTF would not be able to pay teachers strike pay.

While teachers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows held a strike vote Tuesday and Wednesday on wether to escalate their current legal job action, Serra said teachers would take another strike vote should they choose to consider an illegal walkout.

“The BCTF is sensitive to parents, and we’ll do our best to give parents as much notice as possible [of an impending strike],” said Serra.

“We’re not going to spring it on people the day before. But is it going to be enough notice

But police still weren’t sure of the nature of those materials by mid-afternoon Tuesday and wouldn’t confirm if crystal meth was on site or if a meth lab was on the property.

Neighbours say the house is usually quiet and most people keep to themselves on the street – now one of two road accesses to Silver Valley.

One motorist, though, has noticed lots of vehicles at the property.

Maple Ridge man faces riot charges Crown counsel approved 13 new charges Thursday against five more suspects in relation to last year’s Stanley Cup riot, including four against a 20-yearold Maple Ridge man.

Andrew Glenn Cuthbert was charged with two counts of mischief, as well as participating in a riot and arson.

Crown has now formally charged 57 rioters with 153 criminal offences, including others from Maple Ridge.

Jeff Post and Connor Epp, both 20, were

among 25 suspected rioters who had criminal charges approved against them by Crown in November. Post and Epp both face one count each of participating in a riot and another of mischief.

The most r e c e n t charges come eight months after the June 15 rampage that erupted after the Vancouver Canucks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals to the Boston Bruins.

Onlookers shot video and photos and posted them on social media, fueling what has become a massive crowd-sourced police investigation.

Maple Ridge teenager Nathan Kotylak, who confessed on TV, is not among the rioters charged. Kotylak, who was 17 at the time, was caught on camera trying to light a police car on fire, setting a garbage can on fire, and smacking a girl on her breasts.

The now-suspended junior national water polo player was

first identified online through Facebook by people who recognized him. He made a tearful public apology two days after the riot and chose to waive the protection afforded to him as a juvenile.

To date, the Integrated Riot Investigation Team has recommended 350 criminal charges against 125 suspected rioters.

A 911 call to Ridge Meadows RCMP about screaming coming from a house has resulted in three arrests and the seizure of 800 marijuana plants.

The men, all about middle age, were taken into custody about 4:30 p.m. Monday after police answered a call in the 22500-block of 136th Avenue.

“That’s when the three males were arrested and the street enforcement unit took over … to get the warrant and go from there,” said a police spokesman.

A later search warrant resulted in the discovery of the pot.

Police hauled out the crop over night and continued their investigation Tuesday.

Undercover officers and unmarked cars converged on the scene, focusing on an area at the back of the run-down property, where a few wrecked vehicles were parked.

The RCMP’s E Division’s clandestine drug lab unit had taken over the investigation after potentially hazardous materials were found on site.

Old buildings, new social media get heritage commission awards Commission wants new museum

by Phil Mel nyc hu k staff reporter Creating a heritage revitalization agreement to preserve one of Maple Ridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous landmarks could be expected to win a nod for heritage preservation, which is what the Billy Miner Pub and Ale House did Wednesday at the awards night sponsored

by Maple Ridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Heritage Commission.

The pubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new owners, Alpenhaus Restaurants Ltd., signed the deal with the district that ensures preservation of the building (built originally in 1911 as the Bank of Montreal) and received the Heritage Building Award.

Earning a similar award for using social media in heritage preservation, is another thing.

But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Kathy McIntosh did with her â&#x20AC;&#x153;We Call it Haney!â&#x20AC;? Facebook group.

Thanks to help from Val Patenaude at the Maple Ridge Museum for providing the historical content, the district created information signs for posting around town, creating a Haney Heritage Tour in 2011.

Those signs complemented the four historical mosaics already embedded in the new sidewalks along 224th Street and Lougheed Highway.

Those mosaics, created

by Bruce Walther and Ann Wilson, assisted by Dylan Hartley, also got their own Heritage Landscape Award.

The two most recent mosaics proďŹ led Berryland Canning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where plums, peaches pears and apples grown in Maple Ridge were processed.

Berryland â&#x20AC;&#x201C; located just west of 237th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road, was the largest cannery in Maple Ridge a century ago.

The Abernethy and Lougheed Logging Company (Allco Park) also got a mosaic because of its unique railway system, which even drew a visit from Sir Winston

Churchill.

Speirs said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now time to start fundraising for a new museum, which is crowded and lacks storage space. Archives and artifacts have to be stored in other locations.

One possible location is on a district-owned lot on 224th Street, uphill from Haney House, but the district has yet to put the project, which could cost at least $15 million, into its long-term plans.

Maple Ridge Historical Society chairperson Faye Isaac pointed out there has to be a commitment to a building before the society can start fundraising.

She doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care where it goes. Building the museum in Memorial Peace Park was considered when the district was hearing ideas for developing its remaining piece of land next to the Zellerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parking lot. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been recently renovated and relandscaped.

A preliminary design for a new museum and archives was created in 2005 and was projected to cost $7 million, with that price to rise by 15 per cent every year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just want a museum. New anti-bullying training Y U E N ’ S TA K E S A C T I O N will promote safer schools staff reporter The provincial government is developing a new training program for teachers and administrators on how to deal with bullying.

The program will provide extensive face-to-face training within school districts, develop website content and provide initial support to district teams on serious incidents.

The provincial government is currently looking for a contractor to provide the program, which it hopes will help reduce bullying, harassment and school-related threats and risks, while building more consistency across school districts.

According to the Ministry of Education, the program will provide parents with resources and tools for parents, teachers and administrators to recognize and talk to students or their child about steps they can take if they are concerned about bullying.

The program will also provide training for school and district teams on how to create positive, safe school environments.

In addition, specialized training on threat and risk assessment to support teachers to recognize behaviours and help them create community teams to address situations as they arise.

The training and resources will be made available to all public elementary and secondary schools.

Apply for anti-bullying scholarship BullyingCanada, Canada’s National Anti-Bullying Charity, is now accepting applications for the organization’s scholarship program.

The scholarship is open to students in their final year of high school who have worked to end bullying in their schools and communities to aid them with their post-secondary education.

The first round has three $100 scholarships, with more to follow in the months

to come. The deadline for applications is March 1.

Students seek anti-homophobia policy M

aple Ridge- Pitt Meadows secondary students, along with teachers will attend the School District No. 42 Board of Education meeting on today to advocate for trustees to adopt an anti-homophobia policy.

They chose to present on what is widely known as Pink Shirt Day – a day that originated because of a specific type of bullying.

A Grade 8 student in Nova Scotia was harassed and bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

Now students and teachers, and even the general public throughout British Columbia are wearing pink today to not only stand together with the student from Nova Scotia, but to remind us that homophobic bullying is still a grim reality for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students.

Secondary students from four Diversity and Leadership Groups – at Samuel Robertson Technical, Garibaldi secondary, Thomas Haney secondary, and Maple Ridge secondary schools – in conjunction with their sponsor teachers and the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association social justice committee, want the district to join the other 15 school districts in B.C. that have already developed antihomophobia policies.

MacMillan says the care home is supporting the anti-bullying campaign as part of its ongoing efforts to be a harassment-free workplace.

“We take a zero-tolerance approach to abuse,” said MacMillan.

That extends to the 125 residents at the Fraser Health-funded facility. Staff are trained to deal with all sorts of behaviour, and intervene if necessary.

“Our residents are very vulnerable,” MacMillan said. “We do everything we can to make sure that there’s nothing that violates the rights of our residents.”

Big Brothers, Sisters want end to bullying Bowl for Kids Sake returns to Maple Ridge in March

A

national poll commissioned by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada has discovered that half of all adult Canadians were bullied as children, and a third of those believe that the bullying has had a lasting harmful effect on their lives.

The Harris/Decima poll, called the Step Up to Strike Out Bullying Survey, was conducted between Jan. 5 and 8 with a national random sample of 1,034 adult Canadians and is considered accurate 19 times out of 20.

The poll also discovered that 62 per cent of those that were bullied feel they would have benefitted from a volunteer adult mentor.

As part of national Pink Shirt Day, today (Feb. 29), BBBSC is doing its part to help eliminated bullying across the country.

“We are doing the best we can to stop bullying, but more volunteers and financial resources are needed to get the job done,” says Bruce MacDonald, president of the BBBSC. “Mentoring programs can significantly contribute to reducing bullying and its harmful effects,” he says.

“By giving children and teenagers the guidance they need to become the positive and caring individuals they are capable of being, we can steer them to a positive path in life.”

Keesha Rosario of Pitt Meadows was a little sister herself when she was a teenager and the positive guidance she received led her to become a big sister to a teenage girl in Surrey named Teana, who is now 22 years old.

Rosario was bullied at school by a student counselor when she was in Grades 11 and 12.

“I was told that I wasn’t post-secondaryschool material and that I shouldn’t bother applying or striving for post-secondary education,” says Rosario.

However, Rosario shared her problems with her big sister, Trish, who was appalled by the counselor’s conduct.

“She helped give me the confidence and self-esteem to press forward no matter what people said,” says Rosario.

Teana’s bullying took place in Grades 10 and 11. She was verbally and physically bullied by a group of girls at her high school.

“She didn’t enjoy that world,” explains Rosario. “She kept her ear phones on and it affected her academics.”

“But, she looked forward to our time together because she knew she had a friend.

“Just listening. Just being a mentor and asking open-ended questions, you can get youth to talk,” says Rosario “Everyone needs a mentor in their lives.

You could be the bully or the bullied.”

Big Brothers and Big Sisters provides one-on-one and in-school mentoring services to children and teens in more than 1,000 communities across Canada.

Men and women aged 18 and older are paired with a child or teenager who needs an adult role model.

Currently, across Canada, there are more than 27,000 children matched with adults in the organization’s one-on-one programs and it’s looking to find matches for another 10,000 children and teens on a waiting list.

The 23rd annual Bowl for Kids Sake – Big Brothers Big Sisters’ premier fundraising event –will be taking place at REVS bowling centre at 22730 – 119th Ave., Maple Ridge on March 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. and March 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Last year, Bowl For Kids Sake raised more than $80,000 in the Fraser Valley.

Two years ago, $5,000 was raised in Maple Ridge.

Last year, though, due to reduced services of the organization’s local branch, which supports the Mission, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows areas, the event was cancelled, although the Haney Rotary raised $2,500 for the cause.

This year, after restructuring the branch, the bowling fundraiser will once again take place.

Teams of four to six people are encouraged to choose a fun name and dress up for the event.

Manual pledge forms are available for cash and cheque donations and there is also on online option for donations by credit card.

Two hours of bowling will be provided

by Big Brothers Big Sisters, including shoe rental, snacks and a souvenir T-shirt.

There will also be prizes for individuals who raised the most money.

Ridge actress in musical mystery Emily Nadeau appears in The Mystery of Edwin Drood at the Metro Theatre Charles Dickens meets Choose Your Own Adventure in Fighting Chance’s production of Rupert Holmes’ Tony Awardwinning musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which features Maple Ridge actress Emily Nadeau.

In The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Holmes hands the reins of Dickens’ unfinished whodunit to the audience, who nightly must decide just how that performance will end.

It’s a feature that delights audiences and keeps the actors on their toes, according to Ryan Mooney, director of Fighting Chance’s production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood “We’re excited to explore as many different outcomes as possible,” said Mooney.

The outcome is decided by way of an audience vote at intermission.

“You can watch our production every night, and see a different ending each and every time,” said Mooney. “It’s musical theatre at its most dazzling and organic.”

Emily Nadeau is in the ensemble cast. rooted in Dickens’ bleak Victorian novel, the musical is as fun and festive as a British cabaret. This wildly warm-hearted theatrical experience kicks off when the Music Hall Royale ‘puts on’ its flamboyant rendition of an unfinished Dickens mystery. The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is

madly in love with his student, Miss Rosa Bud, who is, in turn, engaged to Jasper’s nephew, Edwin Drood.

Drood disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve, but has Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunit? It’s a musical mystery marathon to the finish as the audience and actors together decide the fate of young Edwin Drood.

“February 2012 marks 200 years since the birth of Charles Dickens,” noted Mooney, who directed a concert version of The Mystery of Edwin Drood for APPLAUSE! Musicals in Concert in 2007.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Dickens’ birthday than by engaging with the final characters he created.”

This particular production finds Fighting Chance in its largest venue, and with its largest orchestra to date.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the 23rd show that Fighting Chance Productions has mounted since its debut production in 2007.

Previous productions included Rent, Sweeney Todd, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Wiz, and The Laramie Project.

Fighting Chance’s mandate is to present new or rarely produced shows in the Lower Mainland, as well as to provide op-

portunities to emerging performers and production crew.

Many restaurants focus on either quality or value at the expense of the other, but King’s Kitchen is trying to offer the best of both worlds. Owner Zhang Johnson said the restaurant’s focus is on supplying Maple Ridge with great-quality Chinese food without charging premium prices.

“We try to make the best-quality Chinese food for the local people,” Johnson said. “We make very highquality food and sell it at a reasonable price.”

The restaurant has been selected as serving the best Asian cuisine in Maple Ridge for eight years in a row, and Johnson said it’s crucial for them to keep that high standard up and keep their regular patrons happy.

“We have a lot of regular customers,” he said.

King’s Kitchen has a wide selection of dishes, featuring everything from curried beef fried rice to deep fried chicken wings, shrimp foo yung, egg swirl soup and sweet and sour prawns. Johnson said the key to the restaurant’s success is attracting local customers and retaining them with superior food, service and other bonuses.

“We like to keep the customers happy,” he said.

To try and reward their frequent customers, King’s Kitchen is offing a loyalty card. Every time you spend more than $16 there on a dinner, you get a stamp; collect 10 stamps and you get a free meal.

“It’s a very good deal,” Johnson said.

He said they came up with the idea to try and recognize those who support them regularly.

“We want to give benefits to our customers.”

Pitt clinches berth at provincials Marauders through to Fraser Valley semifinals with win over Yale Lions

by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Pitt Meadows Marauders Air Force are off to provincials after demolishing No. 8 Fraser Valley seed Yale Secondary at home Monday night by a score of 91-49.

Playing in their last home game of the season, the Marauders gave the 400-strong crowd at Pitt Meadows Secondary School something to cheer about as they advanced to the semifinal of the Fraser Valley championships.

With the win, the Marauders can finish no worse than fourth at the Fraser Valleys, ensuring them of a berth in the Telus AAA B.C. Boys’ High School Basketball Championships next month.

“Our guys did what they had to do in the second half,” said Marauders head coach Rich Goulet. “I wasn’t happy with all the fouls we took... but I was very happy with the win.”

The Marauders took the lead early in the game Monday, but still struggled to find their groove in the first half. With time winding down in the second quarter, the Yale Lions pulled within two points, but a late flurry of baskets put the Marauders ahead 38-30 at the half.

Pitt Meadows dominated the second half, shutting out Yale for the first six minutes of the third quar-

ter. Pitt went on to outscore Yale 26-7 in the third, putting the game out of reach for the Lions.

The Marauders shooters continued to hit their mark in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points to Yale’s 12.

Trevor Severinski led the Pitt offence with a doubledouble, scoring 20 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

Sebastian Marshall had his best game of the season, notching a double-double of his own. Marshall also had 20 points, while grabbing 10 rebounds.

Matt Blackaby had 15 points, while R y a n Hopson had 10 points.

Mitsu Iwai notched 11 assists and six points.

“We need that kind of play this time of year,” said Goulet of Marshall and Hopson’s performance. “The top teams in the province, they can always match up against your top two or three players. But when you have four or five playing like that, you’re going to be hard to beat.”

The Marauders, the No. 2-ranked team in the province for much of this season, will now face Surrey’s Tamanawis Secondary School Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre in the Fraser Valley semifinals.

Tamanawis, the No. 5 seed in the Fraser Valley, beat Pitt Meadows in the first game of the preseason this year, and Goulet is looking forward to avenging the loss.

“A lot has changed since then,” said Goulet.

Flames smoked out by Kodiaks in PIJHL playoff series opener

by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Ridge Meadows Flames fell 8-2 to the Aldergrove Kodiaks Monday night on the road to start their best-of-seven playoff series on a sour note.

The two junior B hockey teams have met six times

so far this season, with Aldergrove picking up wins in all six games.

The Kodiaks finished the season with 59 points to take the top spot in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Harold Brittain Conference, while the Flames snuck into the playoffs with 23 points in the No. 4 seed.

The Kodiaks didn’t waste any time Monday night, getting out in front of the Flames 3-0 in the first period.

That prompted the Flames to pull starting goalie Wesley McLeod in favour of back-up Jordan Hospes.

Hospes didn’t fare much better, allowing five goals

over the next period and a half.

McLeod was back in net for third period, stopping all 12 shots. In all, the Flames goalies faced 53 shots.

Alexander Smith and Sean Pesut both had goals for the Flames.

Marco Ballarin, Trevor Harris, Keenan Grant, and

Dean Gilmore each registered assists.

Game 2 is slated for tonight (Wednesday) in Aldergrove, with the series coming home to Maple Ridge this Friday night for Game 3 at Planet Ice. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Game 4 will be played Monday, March 5, at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge at 9 p.m.

Gregory rink takes GEWC title staff reporter Terry Gregory’s rink completed their domination in Haney Master’s Curling League play with a runaway 10-3 victory over Wayne Chin to capture the Championship Final.

Gregory, along with Max Albrechtsen, Walter Vesa and Earl King, played consistently through the first six ends before jumping all-over the Chin rink to count a 4-ender in the seventh end for the convincing win. The Gregory crew were easily the dominant team this Spring season as they finished in first place in league play and then played solidly throughout the playoffs to win the club championship.

Chin’s foursome of George Lagerstrom, Barry Elson and Ed Belsey, tied with Gregory entering the final, came up short in the final game of the A Flight Championships.

Meanwhile the Bill Gardner and Darrell Winterlik rinks ended up in a tie for the B Flight championship, both recording victories to remain undefeated.

was always Maple Ridge, where she lived and worked for many years.

She was known by many names and played many roles: wife to Arnold, mother of ten, sister, nurse, caretaker and friend. But the one that she liked most was Oma, where, from her comfortable chair, she could direct the chaotic orchestra of her 17 grandchildren and their various appendages.

Brave, generous, stubborn, bold, impulsive and at times reckless, she instilled a sense of fairness, responsibility, and a joy for life in her extended family. Her last battle, fought with strength, dignity and tenacity, was below the belt, against the invisible killer of ovarian cancer. She never gave up, never complained and was making ambitious plans to the very end.

We love you forever, we´ll like you for always, for all us who knew you, an inspiration you will be.
