IN PURSUIT OF A YEAR-ROUND SWIMMING POOL

‘We’re going to ask for the moon — and go with that,’ activists say By JANET INGRAM-JOHNSON Aldergrove Star

Tired of listening to herself complain about a lack of a year-round swimming pool in Aldergrove, Joanne Nicolato decided to do something about it. Enter the Aldergrove Pool Committee, a group of 12 swim enthusiasts whose ambition is to have an indoor pool and recreation centre “completely built in the core of Aldergrove before October 2014.” Nicolato’s family is part of Aldergrove’s Million-Dollar Neighbourhood reality-TV project, featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The show (still airing) aims to help 100 local families increase their collective net worth by an average of $100,000 a week over 10 weeks. “When I started the Million-Dollar Neighbourhood thing, I just did it for the finances,” Nicolato says. “But in the whole process, I found a huge sense of community spirit and I thought, I’m going to do something for this town. I’m tired of listening to myself complain, ‘Where’s the pool? Where’s the pool?’ There needs to be one here. “I thought, I’m going to make it happen.’ The new-pool idea isn’t new, of course. It’s been on local wish-lists for a long time. “In 2007, [Township of Langley planners] had a couple of possible pool options and a day at the Kinsmen Centre for people to come and look at them,” she says. “I did not like any of them because our family is a swim-club family and what Aldergrove needs is something they can do year-round and it didn’t seem as if this was happening. “When the planners left with those proposals, that was it. Nothing happened.” Then in 2011, the artificial swimming pool at Aldergrove Lake Park was shut down. So, with all the public fanfare over the MillionDollar Neighbourhood show, Nicolato thought: “Aldergrove is going to be in the limelight and we need [a new swimming facility] now.” She looked around at her Million-Dollar “family” and was amazed by what “all these people can accomplish in five or six days.” “It was like, ‘We can do this. We can totally do this.’ You take these Million-Dollar people and you spread them into the rest of the com-

Boy hit in marked, lit crosswalk Aldergrove Star

It could have been a lot worse, say police. An Aldergrove boy suffered a broken leg Monday afternoon after being hit by an SUV in a lit crosswalk on 272nd Street. Just after 3 p.m., the 12-year-old was walking his bike and decided to use the pedestrian crossing in the 2800-block of 272nd Street. He activated the flashing pedestriancrossing signal and northbound traffic came to a stop, say RCMP. The boy hopped onto his bike and rode into the crosswalk — something police point out is illegal — where he was struck by a southbound Jeep Cherokee driven by an 85-year-old Langley man. The boy was taken to hospital and treated. The driver wasn’t injured but was very shaken, police say. Speed is not thought to have been a factor in the collision but police may consider charging the Jeep driver with failing to yield for

a pedestrian. “The young boy in this collision was not wearing a helmet but instead chose to carry it in his backpack,” said Langely RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. “Fortunately, he did not sustain any significant head injuries that may have been prevented by wearing a helmet. “In many instances, the pedestrian has the ‘right of way’,” advises Marks. “However, ultimately the pedestrian is the one who will suffer huge consequences if struck. So please, take your time, pay attention and get to where you’re going safely. Drivers may not always stop or obey traffic signals.” Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police to call Langley RCMP Traffic Section at 604-532-3200. On Feb. 3, nine-year-old Nico Pike was badly injured when he was hit by a vehicle on 29th Avenue near his Aldergrove home.

The pedestrian crossing on 272nd Street at 28th Avenue is well lit and well marked.

Good things are starting to happen to Aldergrove’s Nico Pike and his family. Nine-year-old Nico was badly hurt when he was struck by a pickup truck on 29th Avenue Feb. 3. He was unconscious but breathing when B.C. Ambulance paramedics lifted him into an air ambulance. He has now emerged from a coma and started the long road to recovery. It will be made all the easier by the outpouring of financial and moral support from the community, especially from the children at his school, Shortreed Elementary. Student leaders Jack Lee and Jessica Brucker began a coin drive, collecting $1,150.46 for Nico’s family to defray the cost of gas, parking and food associated with their many visits to B.C. Children’s Hospital. Helped by support worker Gail Macklin, the students sorted pennies on Monday, nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday and loonies and twoonies on Friday. After the students rolled the coins, PAC members tallied the total. “This is amazing, incredible,” said PAC president Lacey Warrington. “I’m surprised how the kids in the school have come NATASHA JONES PHOTO together to help another family in a tough time in their lives,” she said, adding that the students are living up to the Shortreed Elementary student leaders Jack Lee and Jessica Brucker pour a huge jar of coins as other students assess their haul. Cancer survivor recognizes the importance of community support

The Canadian Cancer Society Langley Relay for Life is an annual event that brings the community together to celebrate personal victories against cancer. Lynne Robinson, 45, remembers her own struggle with ovarian cancer and says relay is a chance to find a sense of community and support. “Relay for Life is a chance to give back and rejoice. The fact you are alive and wearing a yellow shirt is something to celebrate,” said Robinson. “It’s an opportunity to put it all aside and celebrate your victory.” Robinson was a participant on the Township of Langley’s Relay Team before she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. This will be her third relay as a cancer survivor. “You’re a different person afterwards,” Robinson said. “Wearing a yellow shirt at Relay means recognizing that whatever you were before cancer has changed - it takes courage.” Robinson and her family had a mantra that helped them through the toughest times of her fight with ovarian cancer, they called it their 4B’s: “Believe, battle, breathe and baby steps. We weren’t going to let it take over our lives,” said Robinson. Robinson remembers how valuable

neighbours, coworkers and community members were during her fight, bringing her family meals, doing her gardening and more. “What struck me when I walked around the track were the total strangers cheering. The relay is a metaphor for your cancer journey: you are walking by yourself but total strangers step up to help you along the way,” said Robinson. For many participants, it is often the survivor lap that is the center of attention. However, Robinson says the support in the surrounding stands and family and community members running alongside the survivors was one of the biggest highlights of her Relay experience. In 2010 Robinson took a video camera and filmed all the support surrounding her at the event. “I filmed all the high fives, cheers and support.” This year will be Lynne’s fourth relay with her Township of Langley Team, one of the first of the 51 teams already registered on May 25 at McLeod Park. You can see Robinson’s video at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=5pUKAH_lefw. For more information, or to register to participate visit www.relaybc.ca/langley2012 or call 604-533-0822.

U.S. justice sides with local nurseries over killer fertilizer Black Press

An Aldergrove nursery whose crops were killed by a toxic fertilizer in 2008 has been awarded the bulk of $36 million in damages from an Oregon state civil suit. American fertilizer company Sun Gro Horticulture and agribusiness giant WilburEllis were ordered to pay close to $40 million to JRT Nurseries of Aldergrove and DeZwaan Nurseries of Pitt Meadows in what is believed to be the largest product-liability settlement awarded a Canadian company, according to the nurseries’ lawyer, Joseph Prodor. JRT and DeZwaan nurseries were seeking $40.2 million. According to court documents, both nurseries bought Sun Gro’s fertilizer product,

Multicote 15-9-12, which contained ingredients not designed for horticulture. The fertilizer killed some crops and stunted others. DeZwaan Nurseries grows ornamental Japanese maple trees and was seeking $800,000 in damages. Most of the settlement went to JRT Nurseries on 272nd Street, with DeZwaan being awarded close to $400,000. Woodburn Fertilizer, a division of agribusiness giant Wilbur-Ellis, manufactured, sold and distributed the Multicote 15-9-12 used by Sun Gro, and sold Sun Gro the ingredients not intended for horticulture. In the case of damages sustained by DeZwaan nurseries, the court found Sun Gro to be 85 per cent at fault, while Wilbur-Ellis was 15 per cent to blame.

The court ruled the fertilizer was “unreasonably dangerous” and both Sun Gro and Wilbur-Ellis breached warranties they had made to the product’s effectiveness. DeZwaan Nurseries owner Eelco de Zwaan said he was forced to sell his nursery as a result of the bad fertilizer. “We lost a whole year’s crop,” he said. De Zwaan said Multicote 15-9-12 was marketed as a controlled-release fertilizer, but it contained ingredients that were immediately released. De Zwaan said he expects Sun Gro and Wilbur-Ellis to appeal the verdict. “By the time it’s all done, I don’t think I’ll see any of the money, because of lawyer fees,” he said.

A town hall meeting featuring several levels of government is being held this weekend and residents are encouraged to come out and ask questions of their elected officials. Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese, Langley MP Mark Warawa, Langley MLA Mary Polak and Langley School Board chair Wendy Johnson will all participate in the event Saturday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., in the banquet room of the Langley Events Centre, 7888 – 200 Street. The moderator will be Frank Bucholtz, editor of the Langley Times, who will accept written questions from the audience and submit them to the panel for discussion. Questions can also be submitted via Twitter at #asklangley.

Two masked men bear-sprayed a 71-year-old Aldergrove man and then ransacked his house last week. They made off with a collection of rare coins said to be worth $20,000. The senior managed to call 911 at around 2:15 a.m. and Langley RCMP, police dog handlers and ambulances went to his home in the 7,000-block of 272 Street. Police said the man reported being inside his home when he heard his dog bark. Moments later, the two masked men appeared. One man bear-sprayed the

senior and then both thugs set about ransacking his home. However, they fled only with the coins. Police dogs were able to track the suspects a short distance to where it appeared they had escaped in a vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for the bear spray, said police Const. Craig van Herk. The investigation into the home invasion remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information that might help to call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200. Finance minister’s worst fears coming to haunt him VICTORIA — Before this week’s budget debate is drowned out by the shouting over the teachers’ dispute, here’s a look at the main points and the arguments that are unfolding around them. The setting for Finance Minister Kevin Falcon’s first budget is what he dreaded when Premier Christy Clark handed him the job. Recovery is painfully slow, with mining and petroleum growing and forest products struggling to hold and build on gains made in Asia. This and the $3-billion dismantling of the Harmonized Sales Tax moved Falcon to limit overall spending growth to an average of two per cent for the next three years. That means little or no increase to all areas except health care, education and social assistance. Despite holding the line on public-service pay and not replacing 2,000 positions over the next three years, Clark and Falcon had to postpone the elimination of the 2.5-per-cent small-business income tax to get to a balanced budget by 2013. And Falcon has again dangled the prospect of raising general corporate income tax from 10 to 11 per cent, but not until 2014. Business experts applauded the hard line on spending, noting the contrast with Alberta’s big spending and Ontario’s big spending hangover. New Democrat finance critic Bruce Ralston says Falcon’s twoper-cent spending target is “unrealistic” and the whole program is motivated mostly by two by-elections this year and a general elec-

B.C.’s

views Tom Fletcher tion next year. He says Falcon’s proposal to raise general business taxes is a repeat of his effort to save the HST, and it won’t happen if the B.C. Liberals win in 2013. B.C. Conservative Leader John Cummins made the bizarre claim that it’s an NDP-style “tax-andspend” budget, and inaccurately accused Falcon of raising taxes on small business. He also joined the NDP chorus of outrage over ICBC, B.C. Hydro and medical premium increases. Some other hot topics in the budget: Selling assets. The big one here is B.C.’s liquor-wholesale monopoly, run out of warehouses in Kamloops and Vancouver. Falcon insists the private sector does this kind of work more efficiently, and union contracts will be protected in a bidding process. The NDP argues that selling off a monopoly puts this government cash cow at risk, and points to private retail stores with higher prices and lower wages. The proposed sale of 100 surplus Crown properties has raised cries of “selling the silverware to buy groceries.” But land sales are nothing new for governments, and Falcon prefers that to raising taxes. Carbon tax. The last sched-

uled increase goes ahead in July, adding another penny to a litre of gasoline, followed by a freeze and review of the whole climate program. Ralston says the climate plan is in “tatters,” along with dozens of other policy areas that are also under review after 11 years of B.C. Liberal rule. NDP Leader Adrian Dix vows to keep the carbon tax and its offsetting personal income-tax cuts, direct carbon-tax revenues to transit and rural energy-saving retrofits, and hike the general corporate tax rate from 10 to 12 per cent to pay for it. The HST. Asked what he would have done as finance minister, Ralston suggested getting rid of the HST sooner. Dix continues to misrepresent the HST as solely a transfer to big business, ignoring the small- and mediumsized businesses that have a year left to take advantage of input tax credits. Simon Fraser University economist Jon Kesselman has estimated that poor people will be worse off when the HST ends, while the rest of us will see a very small net benefit. Whether or not you are a fan of reality-TV shows and U.S. showbiz, it’s evident that the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Million-Dollar Neighbourhood series has reinvigorated the community spirit of which Aldergrove has long been justifiably proud. When demand for services outpaces the ability of governments to pay for them by increasing taxes, and with the baby-boom generation fast becoming a senior-population bulge, community activists are finding creative ways to fund their aspirations. In our area, the use of recreational venues seldom reflects municipal boundaries. In Langley Township, the Events Centre, Blair Pool and Walnut Grove Recreational Centre draw people from outside the Township (Langley City being one example), whose user fees do not cover the full cost of maintaining these excellent but expensive facilities. It is quite likely that a year-round pool and recreational centre in Aldergrove would attract Abbotsford taxpayers between Station Road and Mt.Lehman. The new Aldergrove Pool Committee and the Aldergrove Trolley Association (working to connect Aldergrove’s commercial areas by local transit) reflect the frustrations of residents who hear issues being debated endlessly but see little action to accompany the words. If bigger places with louder voices get all the attention, then let’s raise our community profile, they seem to say. In some parts of Canada, community bonds are being used to fund development and renovation projects. Bonds secured by community equity, such as ownership of land and buildings, are issued at modest interest rates. These RRSP- and TFSA-eligible investments are attractive to some conservative investors, such as retirees seeking an ethical income stream at a time of low interest rates and global uncertainty. A target of $20 million for a new rec. centre in Aldergrove (a community of about 11,000 stretched between the Fraser River and the U.S. border) might seem an enormous goal — a glass half-empty, if you will. However, when considering that the nearest indoor swimming pool to Aldergrove sits on the outskirts of Langley City, and when Aldergrove residents have for many years bemoaned the lack of facilities here for young people, perhaps it is time to consider the glass half-full. Please tell us what you think. Janet Ingram-Johnson is sitting in for vacationing Star Editor Kurt Langmann. The views are entirely her own. What is the Aldergrove Pool Committee’s stated goal? An eight-lane, 50-metre indoor pool with a leisure centre (toddler section), a deep end with diving boards, a hot tub, a sauna, an indoor slide, a weight room, an aerobics/exercise room, a gym (with a basketball court that can be used for floor hockey and other events), meeting rooms, up-to-date amenities, and a place for Aldergrove residents to connect as a strong community. It would “serve the youth, the elderly, create a place for the town to stay active in winter months, to stay fit, and to have a central place for the community to connect.” The committee’s website is, it says “a place for the residents of Aldergrove to go for information on the process of this project with some sense of continuity.” The group wants to become part of the pool’s projectmanagement team, alongside the Township of Langley, so that Aldergrove residents have a say in what and how the project progresses and is finished. Members will be fundraising for administrative costs, town meetings, flyers, and other expenses.

Is this consistent planning? Editor: I was puzzled to see that Langley Township Council was so accommodating in approving residential development at the site of Trinity Western University, a private university. From what I understand, this property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve and outside the Metro Vancouver growth strategy area. I am sure that, from Trinity Western’s perspective, there is a need for this housing. Many of our rural elementary schools have been closed, due to declining enrolments, over the past few years. These schools were located in areas where expensive larger acreage properties are the norm. I wonder if these schools would still be open if council showed the same consideration to property owners located next to these schools and allowed affordable housing to be built. Surely, this

would have brought young families with children into these areas. These rural schools had served their communities for decades. One might even say that they were the foundations of the communities they were located in. After all, when we first moved into the Salmon River Uplands area, the first people we met, other than our immediate neighbours, were the parents of other kids at our children’s school. I wonder how the people living in the areas that were once serviced by Bradshaw Elementary, County Line Elementary, South Carvolth Elementary and other schools that are on the chopping block feel about council ignoring their communities’ needs while accommodating this very successful private university. Our family lives on three acres a couple of properties away from

Peterson Road Elementary, which has struggled with declining student enrolment in the past. We are not in the ALR and are in the catchment area for sewer and water. As a result of Langley’s planning policy, we are only allowed one residence on our property. On the positive side, our grandkids are within walking distance of their school and Peterson Road should be able to stay open now that they are busing in kids from all of the other schools that have been closed. So much for council supporting all of the different communities in Langley. I guess we will all be expected to live within a mile of 200th Street in future. The oil companies must love these planning policies with all the students being bused or driven from the closed schools and all the cars idling on 200th Street. Tod McGovern, Langley

Our environment still comes first Editor: How often do people stop and think about the incredibly sustainable province we live in? Virtually all B.C.’s electricity comes from clean, renewable hydroelectric sources, and we have enough untapped hydro potential to do the same again several times over — particularly if we make use of a distributed network of low-impact run-of-river projects. We also have vast, renewable forests that suck up carbon like a vacuum cleaner and store it for long periods of time, if not indefinitely, as wooden objects, furniture and other structures. I can’t think of another place on Earth that can make the same sustainability claims that we can. Add in the renewable wind energy, biomass, geothermal, wave and tidal energy B.C. is capable of generating, plus the strong commitment to the environment shown by the people of B.C., and it’s clear that B.C. is well positioned to meet the challenges of the 21st century sustainably as well as renewably and prosperously. Marney Hogan, Langley

Didn’t vote? Don’t beef!

In regard to a waste-to-energy plant that Metro Vancouver plans to build, new technology has been developed by Mike Biddle, a U.S. plastics engineer, that will surely make waste-to-energy obsolete. Biddle’s experiments with complex-plastics recycling have led to the development of a patented 30-step plasticsrecycling system that includes magnetically extracting metals, shredding the plastics, sorting them by polymer type and producing graded pellets to be reused in industry. This takes less than one-tenth of the energy required to make virgin plastic from crude oil. The recycling process has led to new plants all over the world. Meanwhile, in Scotland, equipment has been developed to turn cardboard, paper and kitchen waste into compost. With these new technologies, how can we allow Metro to commit millions of tax dollars to WTE, with toxic residues in the air and on the ground, for 30 years? Gary Huntbatch, Abbotsford

Editor. Every time I read one of the local papers I find an article or letter to the editor complaining about the actions of the Township of Langley council and

mayor. Well you got the council and mayor you voted for. Or didn’t bother to vote for. John Winter, Langley

Readers’ scoop on the poop Editor: I totally agree with Debbie Sorenson (Feb 16) about dog droppings fouling our community. I walk three dogs most mornings and I pick up after them. It is the epitome of selfishness to leave your dog’s mess for someone else to clean up! If you don’t want to clean it up, why do you suppose someone else does? I have seen signs from frustrated property owners, asking people not to leave dog excrement on their lawns and then I see many piles left there. I also agree that picking it up and leaving the bags is absolutely senseless! Who do these people think is going to pick up these bags? I’ve seen dog feces on the grounds of Parkside Elementary School! Please think of the children who attend the school and go to the playground in the park. It is so littered with dog excrement in Aldergrove that I have to watch my dogs to make sure

they don’t accidentally step in a pile! Dog owners, beware, this is the kind of behaviour that will have the end result of dogs being banned from the parks. Please take some pride in your community and be respectful towards your neighbours. Liz Pahlke, Aldergrove I walk my dog twice a day every day and I did use plastic bags to pick up droppings. But I came to my senses, thinking about all that plastic in landfills, as plastic does not break down, whereas dog droppings do. Imagine, 100 years from now, plastic from 2012 will still be around. What’s more important; the environment or the bottom of your shoe? Until our so-called scientists of the world come up with something that will break down and leave a better world for generations to come, I will leave my dog’s droppings where it lands. Tim Gannon, Aldergrove

The gymnasium at Aldergrove Community Secondary School was packed to the rafters last week as 51 new Canadians from 24 different nations took the oath of citizenship.

Hosting the ceremony was a first for the school and the audience included almost the entire student bodies of both ACSS and nearby Betty Gilbert Middle School. It was also only the second time that Citizenship Judge Dane Minor had administered

the oath of citizenship inside a school, but it was clear that he enjoyed the experience and would likely do it again. “It’s a particular pleasure to welcome those of you who will soon become Canadian citizens. “It’s an important day for

Thiessen aces his NHL debut First-star honours for Aldergrove rookie: ‘Everything I expected, and more’ By GARY AHUJA Black Press

The puck is the same size in the NHL as it is at every other level. Goalie coach Gilles Meloche passed along that message to Aldergrove’s Brad Thiessen before his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Thiessen shared that nugget in a media scrum following his 22-save performance in a 4-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Consol Energy Center. His efforts earned him first-star honours. “It was everything I expected, and more,” he told reporters. “It was a lot of fun to be a part of it and contribute to a win.” Thiessen was recalled from the Penguins’ AHL affiliate in WilkesBarre/Scranton last week after backup goalie Brent Johnson suffered an injury. And, with the team playing backto-back games on Saturday and Sunday, Thiessen figured he might get his first taste of NHL regular-season action. Thiessen’s dad and a cousin were able to make it to Pittsburgh to watch the game, as was his fiancée. Thiessen’s brother and his fiancée also made the trip. Any jittery nerves were soon gone. Thiessen used his head — literally — to make his first save, as a Derek Mackenzie slapshot deflected off his helmet and out of danger. “They had a few good chances on

The Penguins won 4-2. their first few shots, so just to be able to make those saves helped me get settled and into the game,” Thiessen said. Columbus opened the scoring when captain Rick Nash beat Thiessen on a shorthanded breakaway 9:49 into the second period. But Pittsburgh tied the game at

one on an Evgeni Malkin goal and then scored three times in the third period. “I knew we had some pretty good forwards on this team and that we were going to come through, and eventually they did,” he said. The Blue Jackets’ Vinny Prospal scored the final goal of the game.

Thiessen spent three seasons in the BCHL before starring at Northeastern University. In his junior season, he was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, presented to the top collegiate player. He left school early and signed with the Penguins as a free agent in 2009.

Thiessen has spent the majority of his three pro seasons in the AHL and last year he won the Aldege ‘Baz’ Bastien Memorial Award as the league’s top goaltender and set franchise records with 35 wins and seven shutouts. — With files from the Pittsburgh Penguins website

Kodiak Matt Luongo takes a shot on North Vancouver Wolf Packs’ goal last week at Aldergrove Arena. Kodiaks won 4-3.

Game one went to the Aldergrove Kodiaks in a rout. The Kodiaks extinguished the Ridge Meadows Flames early, pumping in four goals in the opening 20 minutes on their way to an 8-2 victory in the first game of the Junior-B PIJHL best-of-seven playoff series on Monday at the Aldergrove Arena. And, after the Flames scored twice in the first 1:01 of the second period to make things interesting, Aldergrove responded with another four-goal outburst to put the game well out of reach. Twin brothers Spencer McHaffie (two goals, one assist) and Scott McHaffie (one goal, two assists) and Mitchell Guiel (one goal, two assists) led the way offensively with three points apiece, while Matthew Luongo, Stephen Ryan, Thomas Hardy and Daniel Higgs each had a goal. Ross Baadsvik made 45 saves. Game two was last night [Wednesday], also at Aldergrove Arena and after the Star’s press deadline. The series shifts to Maple Ridge’s Planet Ice

for games three and four tomorrow [Friday] and Monday. Should it be necessary, game five would be back in Aldergrove March 7. Aldergrove wrapped up the regular season with a split in their final two games —6-2 over the Port Moody Black Panthers and a 4-3 loss to the North Delta Devils. Hardy led the way with two goals and an assist, while Ryan Veillet, Guiel, Higgs and Scott McHaffie each had a goal. Brendan Sharp stopped 31 shots in the victory. Against the Devils, Hardy and Scott McHaffie had a goal and two assists while Spencer McHaffie had a goal. Sharp made 50 saves. The results helped the Kodiaks edge the Abbotsford Pilots for top spot in the Harold Brittain Conference. Aldergrove finished the regular season at 28-13-2-1 for 59 points while the Pilots (28-14-2-0) had 58 points. • Six points over the final two regular season games helped Thomas Hardy win the Pacific International Junior Hockey League scoring title with 73 points — tied for top spot with Spencer Traher of the Delta Ice Hawks.

Hoping for better weather this year Black Press

Among the things organizers of the Golden Ears Half-Marathon are hoping for is better weather. Last year’s inaugural event — which starts out in Pitt Meadows, crosses the Golden Ears Bridge to Langley, and then heads back over the bridge to Pitt Meadows — was done in a steady downpour. Regardless, roughly 300 registered participants completed either the 10-kilometre course or the half-marathon. Race director and Peninsula Runners manager Kathie Schellenberg expects a similar field for the second running of the race March 11. The two registered charities who will again benefit from the race’s proceeds are the Langley School Foundation’s School Meals Program and the Friends in Need Food Bank in Pitt Meadows. The race, which starts at 7.30 a.m., will begin and end at the newly completed South Bonson Community Centre. Cost is $25 for the 10-km event and $40 for the half-marathon for registration by March 4. After that, they are $25 and $50, respectively. Non-B.C. Athletics members also must pay an extra $3. Register online at www.EventsOnline.ca.
