FIRE RAVAGES SAHALI APARTMENT BLOCK
Blaze tears through top floor By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Dozens of residents of a Sahali apartment complex will likely be displaced from their homes after a large fire tore through the top floor of Copper Ridge Court, 1375 Summit Dr., on Wednesday (Feb. 29) afternoon. Emergency crews were called to the building just after 1:30 p.m. for a report of smoke. Firefighters arrived to find smoke billowing from the building’s roof. Within a few minutes, flames could be seen and additional firefighters were called in. At about 2 p.m., Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) officials had police shut down traf-
fic on Summit Drive between Notre Dame and Arrowstone drives. By 2:30 p.m., flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the building’s north side and two top-floor units appeared to be fully engulfed. As of KTW press time, firefighters were still battling the blaze. KFR assistant chief Jim Bell said crews believe the fire started in a third-floor laundry room and quickly spread. “It apparently started in that area and it got into the ceiling from that room and started burning in the ceiling,” he said. “It’s very difficult to get at. We are working on it.” Bell described the blaze as “complicated” because of where it was in the building, and estimated there were about
30 firefighters at the scene. Copper Ridge Court resident Kassandra MacCarthy, a student at Thompson Rivers University, said she was shocked to find her building up in flames. “I was walking up and I saw them [firefighters] all running, and I was like, ‘I hope that’s not my building,’” she said. “I was just coming to get my books so I could study.” As of 3 p.m., thick black smoke was still billowing above the building and dozens of curious onlookers had gathered to watch firefighters battle the blaze from across Summit Drive. It’s believed all residents were able to get out of the building safely. Check kamloopsthisweek.com for updates.
Firefighters were called to the Copper Ridge Court apartment complex in Sahali on Wednesday, Feb. 29, to battle a large blaze. Copper Ridge Court consists of two buildings on Arrowstone Drive, backing onto Summit Drive, and the blaze was in the west-facing four-storey building. The fire is believed to have started in the third-floor laundry room before spreading to the fourth floor and roof. Kamloops Fire Rescue officials said there were no reported injuries. Bicentennial logo connects two peoples By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
Every good celebration needs a good logo — and this year’s Kamloops bicentennial celebration has one. The city has unveiled the Two Rivers Two People logo, which will be featured at various festivities to mark Kamloops’ 200th anniversary this year. The winning logo, designed by Karen Reese, was chosen from among 40 entries in a city-sponsored competition. Reese said the idea was to illustrate how First Nations in the area at the time embraced the fur traders who settled and founded the city. “I think it speaks for itself,” Reese said. The winning design was chosen by a group of judges, which included representatives from the Tk’emlups Indian Band, Thompson Rivers University and the City of Kamloops.
‘I came. I had a look. I liked what I saw.’ Judge Terry Shupe is retiring at the end of this week — he really means it this time! — following a 36-year career on the bench. Dave Eagles/KTW

SK AROUND AT THE Kamloops Law Courts about retiring provincial court Judge Terry Shupe and one observation persists. He’s very funny. And, if you ask his honour himself, he’ll tell you his wit has been as important a tool as any in his 36-year career on the bench. “It’s essential. It’s absolutely vital,” he said. “Bringing a little levity in a place that’s full of tension — I view it as essential. “That’s my personality. I’m pretty deadly serious about the work, but trying to break tension is not a bad idea when you can.” This week is Shupe’s last as a sitting judge. Shupe retired once before, in 2000. However, he stayed on with the provincial court as an ad-hoc judge — basically working part-time as needed, often in courthouses in far-flung communities across B.C. Given that travel schedule — Shupe figures he’s been working out of town for about one week of every month since “retiring” 12 years ago — it’s nice, he said, to spend his last week as a sitting judge in Kamloops, where his legal career began in the 1960s.
It’s nice, but it’s no coincidence. “We actually arranged for him to sit here this week because this is his home district,” said Kamloops provincial court Judge Stella Frame. “He sits quite often out of town.” Frame said Shupe will be missed among the small, but closeknit, group of local judges. “He’s a nice guy to have around,” she said. “He still likes doing what he does and I think that’s important. “And, he’s very entertaining. “He’s a great storyteller — but, it’s mostly about the stuff he does outside of judging.” One such story, which Shupe recounted for KTW, began on a day in 1989 at Kamloops Airport. Shupe, who was then a pilot, but is quick to admit his licence to fly has longsince lapsed, took his eldest son and a friend up for a flight. However, the plane they were planning on using was out of service, so they took a replacement. “The configuration of the cockpit was completely different,” Shupe said. “I shouldn’t have taken it up. We should have just gone home.” But, they didn’t. X See RETIRING A11

Body found in ďŹ redamaged motel room One person was found dead in a fire-damaged unit at a Valleyview motel on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 29. Firefighters were called to unit 26 of the Tournament Inn, 1893 TransCanada Hwy., where the body of a man was discovered amid the damage caused by the flames. As of KTW press deadline, neither Kamloops Fire Rescue nor Kamloops RCMP had information to release on the identity of the deceased man, nor any word on what may have caused the fire and whether the death is related to the blaze. Will teachers strike before law is enacted? By Tom Fletcher and Tim Petruk BLACK PRESS AND STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
The head of the KamloopsThompson Teachers’ Association says local educators were angered by provincial legislation introduced this week in an effort to end the ongoing job action playing out in B.C. schools since September. “The legislation that’s come down has really enraged teachers, Jason Karpuk told KTW, as teachers across the province were voting on whether to escalate their job action and begin staging walkouts. “It’s viewed by teachers as very draconian and I think that will be reflected in the vote. Voting took place on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Karpuk said he expects provincewide results to be released today (March 1). On Tuesday, Feb. 28, B.C. Education Minister George Abbott tabled legislation that would suspend all strike action and could impose millions of dollars in fines per day if a strike persists. As the legislature debates the Education Improvement Act, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation could legally walk off the job as early as next week, depending on the voting results. The LRB ruled Tuesday teachers can legally strike for up to three consecutive days in one week after two days’ notice,
and a further one day in each subsequent week with the same notice. That could continue until the new bill passes the legislature. Abbott said the legislation imposes a six-month “cooling-off period and sets up appointment of a mediator to look at non-monetary issues such as class size and composition. A separate penalty provision would be enacted if necessary, Abbott said, imposing a fine of $1.3 million a day on the BCTF and up to $475 a day on individual teachers who strike in defiance of the new legislation. Abbott said the timing of imposing the cooling-off period depends on whether the NDP opposition holds up the bill or lets it pass in the legislature. BCTF president Susan Lambert said walkouts are a last resort for teachers, and they would rather have resolved the issue through mediation. The legislation extends the current teacher contract terms until the end of August, imposing the government’s two-year net-zero wage mandate that most other government unions have agreed to voluntarily. It gives a yet-to-be-named mediator until June 30 to seek agreement on issues other than pay and benefits, such as class size and composition. Some Kamloops high school students are expected to join in a provincewide student walkout in support of teachers on Friday, March 2.

Crowd out to talk budget
City of Kamloops
Council tries new format to engage the public STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
It appears the city’s efforts to get more people to attend a public budget meeting has paid off. A crowd of about 75 people showed up at the Interior Savings Centre on Tuesday night (Feb. 28) to listen and ask questions about the 2012 city budget, with the focus on the parks, recreation and cultural services department. Several residents asked council to consider spending money to install new bathrooms at the McArthur Island Youth Centre, while others, like Kamloops Voters Society (KVS) member Frank Dwyer, urged council to involve the public earlier in the budget process. Elaine Sedgman, with the Kamloops Food Policy Council, requested council move forward with more funding for public gardens, while Rick Turner asked the city to give Kamloops athletes, who are planning to participate in the 2013 B.C. Seniors Games, a chance to practise in city facilities prior to the start of the event. There were also questions beyond the mandate of the parks and recreation department. Residents questioned why the local firefighters’ collective agreement is tied to the contract of Vancouver firefight-
ers. It was noted by city staff the provision is part of the current collective agreement, but bargaining is underway for a new contract for Kamloops firefighters. The evening was an experiment for the city. Instead of having the traditional open-mic format for one night, council agreed to hold three meetings that include roundtables, where one councillor will sit at a table and join the public. After the department director reviews their particular budget, the meeting is opened to questions. The seemed to be a hit with both the public and council. Former city council candidate Ray Nyuli said the new format worked and he encouraged council to retain it for next year. “It’s a really good thing that the city is doing,” he said. Coun. Donovan Cavers said he was pleased with the process, suggesting it helped contribute to the biggest turnout for a budget meeting in years — and he credited the KVS with helping push for change in the format. Coun. Arjun Singh said the meeting helped him get a better understanding of what the community wants in the budget. “It’s a very exciting thing to see the people out,” he said. Ultimately, the
meetings are aimed at helping council make decisions to craft the final budget. Supplemental capital projects on the list of the parks and recreation department include $80,000 each to replace the roof and install new bathrooms at the McArthur Island Youth Centre, another $150,000 for stair aids at ISC and $35,000 for a public produce demonstration garden. Mayor Peter Milobar said he heard there was a willingness to see levels maintained, which he said wasn’t a surprise given the parks and recreation department is resposible for the livability of the city. Cavers said he also heard an interest by the public to maintain service levels, suggesting people are willing to pay a little extra to get a little more. The focus of the next budget meeting on March 6 will be the public works and sustainability department, with the final meeting on March 13 dealing with development and engineering services. The preliminary budget estimate shows a 5.7 per cent property-tax increase for this year, including an additional 1.3 per cent in supplementary items. That increase is to make up for a $4.7million budget shortfall. The 5.7 per cent hike would be equal

to an extra $92 being paid by owners of an average-assessed home in Kamloops, with a value of $344,000. The city has to pay an extra $1.6 million for employee salaries and benefits, $848,982 for RCMPcontract increases, $651,000 for transitcontract increases and $432,000 for the new fire hall in Aberdeen.

TRU contest spans all ages By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Ten thousand. That’s how many wooden wands could be involved in this weekend’s Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest, hosted by Thompson Rivers University on Saturday, March 3. Organizers are hoping for close to 100 entries in four categories, spanning elementary-aged children to professional engineers. “There are a number of these types of contests around the province,” said Andrew Watson, a local engineer who has been involved with the event since it began nine years ago. “But, we have the coolest testing machine.” Watson said the pneumatic device pushes a ram into the top of the bridge while measuring force. “It’s very cool,” he said. The rules in TRU’s contest are straightforward, but rigid, according to co-organizer Normand Fortier. “The bridges have to be built ahead of time,” said the TRU physical-sciences instructor. “The rules specify the dimensions the bridge needs to be. There can only be 100 Popsicle sticks, only white glue can be used and there’s no cutting the sticks in any way.” Watson said the strategies are usually quite varied. “You can do lots of things,” he said. “You can do a glue-laminated beam, you can do a

truss or you can do a variation on an arch. “The better the workmanship, the better it will perform.” Fortier thinks simpler is better. “The winning entries usually have a lot of the same characteristics,” he said. “You need to have a very simple triangular structure which has been built very precisely.” Some stick engineers take the competition very seriously. “It could be as few as four to five hours of work or it could be months of preparation and design and construction,” Watson said. “It depends.” Saturday’s event is slated to begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., with the competition getting underway at 10 a.m. Competition will take place in the plumbing lab inside TRU’s Trades and Technology Building. The four categories are elementary, secondary, open and corporate — the latter being open only to engineering professionals. It’s free to enter, but last-minute bridges probably won’t perform very well. Fortier said it takes about a week for the glue in the bridges to fully dry. “Surprisingly, white glue takes a long time to harden,” he said. “So, the people who are really into this, their bridges have been done for a while already.” Fortier said he expects to see upwards of 50 entries on Saturday, in addition to 35 elementary students who had their bridges tested this week because of a scheduling conflict.

Dear son: I’m sorry my job as a teacher has affected you
I
RECEIVED A LETTER this week from a teacher in Kamloops. He’s been teaching for several years and has a couple of kids in the system. He loves his job and is dedicated to helping his students achieve their goals — so much so that a student thanked him recently for helping her win a scholarship she really hoped to receive. He was thrilled, of course, but started wondering why he couldn’t do as much for his own children as he has been doing all these years for his students. As he put it, “I thought of all the other ways my students get my best and first efforts and my family gets my last and weakest.” Isn’t that the mark of a teacher? Someone so dedicated that he’ll go the extra mile to make sure students — his students — excel. This teacher/dad wonders if anyone is doing the same for his kids since he’s not there all the time. Sure, he may drive them to their games, but he’s not the coach. Maybe he’s a coach of his students at school but, when it comes to his own kid’s activities, he’s on the sidelines, marking papers and looking up every now and then, hoping to catch you score or at least see him wave to you. This teacher continues: “I’m also sorry that, when I’m home, I often haven’t switched out of teacher mode. You don’t get a dad, you get another damned teacher, sitting right there at your dinner table. Your friends get to escape school for a while each day; you don’t.
DALE BASS Street
LEVEL “I know I’m always nagging, correcting, pressuring and prodding you to do more as a student; I should be enjoying your childhood and adolescence with you, while we’re all together at home.” This teacher is sorry he’s not making enough money to afford to send all of his kids to college or university. Again, he writes: “Hopefully, other teachers and family members will pick up the slack and get you where you want to go. I can help with your homework, but I’ll never be able to pay for even one full tuition. You’ll have to get student loans, bursaries and work your way through, same as me. I don’t envy you that task because I found it to be a huge effort and a huge cost both financially and emotionally.” Then we get to the crux of this dad’s issues. He’s sorry his kids hear that he’s “lazy and greedy. “You hear that I’ve got a lot of nerve to ask for a raise, job security, and improved classroom conditions when I only work 35 hours a week and get summers off. “You hear them say that I don’t live in the ‘real’ world. I’m sure you wonder how people can say that when
I don’t take the time to teach you to drive, or go fishing, until the summer vacation.” Let me insert here that it makes me crazy to hear others say teachers have it so good, short days and all summer off. My husband teaches — albeit at the university — and I can’t count the number of nights and weekends he’s spent in his office marking assignments, grading tests, prepping for classes, researching to ensure he’s teaching his students the most current and best. Teaching is so much more than just teaching. Back to this teacher, though: “Mostly I’m just so sorry that you get an exhausted, perpetually sick, cranky guy to live with. I often come home to you having not taken a break of any kind all day. Working with teenagers all day is really hard to do, both physically and mentally. “Arriving home to a house full of teenagers seems like more work and it shouldn’t.” Sometimes these labour issues get drowned out by the rhetoric on both sides, by the stridency of unions and management and we forget there are really great people who just want to do their jobs. This is a teacher who cares deeply, who loves his jobs and wants his students to soar. But, he knows even as he succeeds, he’s failing. He’s a good teacher. The public may see him as a money-grabbing whiner — but he’s the kind of teacher they really would want for their own kids. dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
There is a deadly moment in sports that occurs when someone is said to have “lost the room.” A coach will be trying to fire up a team to win with a locker-room speech, only to realize the players are tuning him out. They simply don’t care. Losing the room, experts say, is a consequence of losing trust. People stop believing what the coach or manager is saying. Then, they stop believing in the person. Finally, they stop listening. When that happens, there isn’t much a leader can do to win their audience back. But, Premier Christy Clark is giving it a shot. Having inherited a troubled, controversy-racked party that is down in the polls, she needs to fire up supporters if she’s going to win the next election. That means finding a way to rally Liberal backers, and what better way to wind up the troops than a restraint-minded provincial budget? Unfortunately for the Liberals, even their most diehard supporters seemed unable to muster more than a tepid message of support. Even worse from a Liberal standpoint, there was a decided lack of heat from the usual critics, with the opposition NDP’s Bruce Ralston adopting more of a scoffing, eyesrolled-to-the-ceiling tone in his comments than the indignant outrage usually reserved for such moments. When both your supporters and your opponents are barely paying you attention, you’re in a lot of trouble. Coaches and managers in that position usually end up fired.

Re: Christopher Foulds column: What makes the teachers’ union think it’s different?: “What makes B.C. different from any other province? If there are such problems with the education system, would we not want to attract and retain the best possible teachers to fix it? “Your presumption that the Alberta Conservatives would somehow value education less than the B.C. government is laughable and B.C. should be ashamed that its paying its teachers so poorly. “I know I’m not alone in saying I have zero interest working for a government that clearly places no value on the services I provide.” — posted by Andy Mikula

10% Cutting transit funds means cutting out society YES NO 90% Editor: One of the arguments I have yet to hear regarding the public-transit debate is the goal of our society to be inclusive of every person, not just those who choose to drive their own car or truck. Many of the people who use public transit do so for very practical reasons. Riders might be too old or too young to drive. They might have a disability. They might not be able to afford to own their own vehicle. Others may have reasons based more on the ethics of public transit, such as wanting to reduce their personal contribution to the waste and pollution associated with the use of ordinary
passenger vehicles. Or, they would rather contribute their fare to a system that helps societal inclusivity rather than focusing on the individualism that is promoted through the marketing of the automobile. Some local critics have suggested there is much wasted in the public-transit system because large buses often travel with just a handful of passengers. However, those large buses are also able to kneel for the disabled, the elderly and parents with strollers. Eliminating runs that service only a few people at a time might also mean eliminating those few residents’ ability to participate in, or contribute to,
our community. And, those larger buses can accommodate up to 55 passengers, and often do, which is something no small bus will ever do. These are all meaningful and contributing members of our society and, if we want to continue having a society that claims it is inclusive of all of its constituents, we must also be prepared to provide services that make that possible. Cutting funds and runs will surely mean cutting out members of our community who have no other options for transportation. Peter Kerek Kamloops
A proposal to use transit to free up RIH parking spots Editor: On my latest visit to Royal Inland Hospital, I was again forced to play the game of musical parking, with an entourage of two cars in front of me and four behind, none of which found a space for their efforts. I’ve played this game for as many as three running unsuccessful attempts, at times cutting frightfully close to missing my time window for visiting before an upcoming operation. I feel a real option to the parking crunch is available, but would require tweaking the current Route 11-Lorne Street transit route. The Lorne Street bus loop would need to go up Fourth Avenue from Seymour Street to Columbia Street, loop through the hospital property, make a stop at the front or rear
entrance, then return down Third or Fourth avenue, returning to Seymour Street. Instead of turning onto Lorne Street at 10th Avenue, the bus would continue down River Street to the parking lot that lies between the Kamloops Yacht Club and the River Street skateboard park before it returned back to Lorne Street. Currently, the bus for this route runs hourly during Royal Inland Hospital’s main operating and visiting hours (with one exception). However, if it were increased to every 30 minutes, I believe many in the general public would use this lot rather than the hospital parkade for their visits, especially if fares were reduced or eliminated to encourage this change. An added incentive could be a five-
minute wait at this lot before continuing, to allow people sitting and waiting in their cars in the lot to put down their newspapers, lock their cars and board the bus. This route might then require one more loop at the beginning and end to better accommodate surgery times and visiting hours. Alternatively, Royal Inland Hospital employee cars now occupying the top floor of the hospital parkade could park in this same River Street parking lot, with the hospital running a shuttle bus to and from this lot during shift changes, freeing up this priceless space for patients and their visitors.

The Tournament Capital Centre was among the biggest revenue-generators in 2011 for the city’s parks, recreation and cultural services department, bringing in $2.7-million in revenue. KTW file photo

City recreation — by the numbers By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
The Tournament Capital lived up to its name again last year. According to the parks, recreation and cultural services 2011 annual report, the city hosted 109 events, bringing 27,878 people to Kamloops and generating $11.8 million in economic impact. That proved to be a slight increase from 2010, when 27,726 people participated in 100 events, bringing in an economic spinoff of $11.7 million. In 2009, the city hosted 92 events, leading to $9 million in total economic impact. Byron McCorkell, director of parks, recreation and cultural services, noted $11 million is new the benchmark for the city. “If we can hit the $11-million mark every year, I think we’re spinning off into the community a fairly significant amount of revenues,” he said.
The biggest event was the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games, which brought hundreds of athletes and families to Kamloops. The city estimated the dollar figure through a basic calculation of $125 per participant, per day. This year could also turn out to be just as good. McCorkell hinted the city is working on landing a major tournament for the Tournament Capital Ranch ball fields that could bring up to 200 teams to Kamloops. The department also rang up a budget of $21.9 million, while generating $7.2 in revenue, which works out to $240 for the average household in the city to fund the department. The two biggest revenue-generators were the city arenas, the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) and stadiums, each of which generated $2.7 million. Brock Arena proved the most popular of ice surfaces, logging 4,250 hours of use, while at the bottom of the list was
Interior Savings Centre, which had 2,120 hours of use. The TCC was also popular, signing up 1,266 annual full-facility members and issuing another 16,997 monthly passes, while 5,967 took advantage of indoor track-only passes. A total of 1.1-million people visited the TCC, which generated $2.1 million in revenue. The report also noted 1,358 hectares of parkland area within the city
inventory, 237 hectares of which is developed, while the rest is considered open space. There are 84 parks, 70 sport fields, 14,000 trees in parks and boulevards, 80 kilometres of trails, three water parks, 40 hard-surface courts for tennis, basketball, lacrosse and pickleball, along with 40 playgrounds in the city’s inventory. Interestingly, the city handed out 480,000 doggie bags in 2011.

Terry Shupe will continue to spend plenty of time in his workshop, handcrafting wooden toys for children in Third-World countries such as Sri Lanka, Nicaragua and Afghanistan. KTW file photo
Retiring, but still involved X From A3
“I hit wind shear at Ashcroft,” Shupe said of the ill-fated flight. “The plane stalled and we came down just short of the runway at the airstrip there.” The crash destroyed the airplane, but no one was injured. Something else Shupe is well-known for — not just in Kamloops, but in communities across the globe — are the hand-crafted wooden toys he builds in his home shop. He’d been doing it for years, at first donating the pieces to Christmas Amalgamated and other local charities. Then came the devastating Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, which caused widespread death
and destruction in South Asia. Shupe went on a trip to Sri Lanka — one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami — in February 2005. Since then, he’s been sending his high-quality, homemade wooden toys to the island nation. In the years since, he has also begun shipping the toys to other ThirdWorld countries, including Afghanistan and Nicaragua. So, now that he’s retiring — for real this time — will Shupe be spending more time in the toy workshop? Not likely, he said, but only because that would be impossible. “I don’t dabble,” he said. “I’m in that shop frequently and I don’t
dabble when I’m out there.” But, he does plan to do more fishing and spend more time with his grandkids. Shupe said he’ll miss one thing more than anything else when it comes to leaving his judicial career behind. “My colleagues,” he said. “There isn’t much by way of legal argument or fact base I haven’t heard at one time or another, so it isn’t that. “But, the people I will.” Especially the incoming judges. “I have always said to the newbies, ‘Hold your feet to the fire, do not
amass a large number of reserve judgements, but also keep a balance in your life,’” he said. “I also say, ‘Stay connected to your community.’ That’s so important.” It’s something Shupe has truly done since he first arrived in Kamloops in the 1960s as a University of B.C. law student to do his articles. “I came, I had a look, I liked what I saw,” he said. “My whole career has been here. “I married a Kamloops girl and we are now 38 years married. “We have many grandchildren and this is home.”

such a bylaw. According to city staff, it would cost between $25,000 to $50,000 to hire an consultant to review each crossing. It would then cost up to $500,000 per crossing, depending on the assessment, to upgrade the crossing to make them safe for no whistles.

Union surprised to hear it’s against cell tower Group fighting smart meters still says firefighters are onside By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
A group opposed to the construction of a new cell tower on the property of a Tranquille Road church may want to consider giving the local firefighters’ union a phone call. The Kamloops chapter of Interior Smart Meter Awareness recently led a protest against the erection of a cell tower in the Kamloops Full Gospel Church property, not far from a firehall. Prior to the protest, the group issued a press release in which it claimed the International Association Fire Fighters union is opposed to that particular tower and was never consulted. But, the claim comes as a surprise to the local head of the union. Chris Krutop, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters local 913, said the group never contacted him. “I would know, I’m the president,” he
told KTW. “The International Fire Fighters Association has noting to say about that particular cell tower, or its placement.” Krutop suggested it would be in the group’s best interest to consult the union before making any statements on its behalf. “Ordinarily, if you’re looking for an ally in something like this, you would contact me directly, I would think,” he said. Krutop acknowledged there was a discussion in the past about the tower and where it would be placed, but nothing came of it. He said if a tower was to be placed on the firehall property, the union would discuss the issue with the city. Krutop noted that, internationally, the location of cell towers has been an issue with IAFF. According to a statement by the IAFF, the union opposes the use of fire stations as base stations for towers and antennas for the conduc-

Brian Thiesen, the chairman of the local smart meter-awareness group, said he didn’t intend be misleading in the release, adding he did hand-deliver a copy of the IAFF position to a captain at the fire hall. “Those particular
people at that particular fire department may not know this document exists, but that has been their [IIAF] position,” he said. Thiesen also said the union may not have received the letter he delivered. “I’m going with the international firefighters’ association, which is the top of the chain, which says ‘We don’t accept and or want these things,’” he said.

RIH Foundation head moving on The Royal Inland Foundation will be searching for a successor to Veronica Carroll following the executive officer’s decision to step down after three years at the helm. Carroll, who succeeded Paul Battjes, has chosen to pursue other personal and professional goals and will leave the foundation in six months. “Veronica has been the catalyst in the organization of two major campaigns during her tenure,” foundation board chairman Jim Reynolds said. “Her leadership was key in wrapping up the $1.5-million CT-scan campaign and, mostly recently, the $3-million intensive care-unit campaign. The board is extremely appreciative of the enthusiasm, innovation and creativity Veronica brought to her position since coming on board.” “I am so very, very
VERONICA CARROLL:
proud of the community, our donors, the staff, our board of directors and for everyone who believed so passionately in the new ICU campaign,” Carroll said. “Having completed the campaign in such a wonderful fashion, I just felt that the time was right to signal my departure.” Just last week, the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation celebrated the completion of the $3-million campaign for a new intensive care unit at Royal Inland Hospital. The campaign, called Compassionate Hearts, was launched in
March 2010 and raised $3.07 million behind its ambassador, NHL legend and Kamloops product Mark Recchi. Under Carroll’s tenure, the campaign reached its $3-million target one year earlier than forecast. “My last day will be a tough one and I’m sure that I’ll shed a few tears, but I know that I gave everything that I had leading with passion and conviction. A lot of what I learned in Kamloops will serve me well as I move forward into other wonderful opportunities.” The Royal Inland Hospital Foundation supports the needs of Royal Inland Hospital, which serves approximately 225,000 people from the ThompsonCariboo-Shuswap region, as well as regional facilities, and carries on the tradition of raising funds for patient-care equipment, health-sciences bursaries and special programs.

ly stable Phoenix Centre because. “Addictions lead to loss of productivity for employees and absences from work and that costs business,” Boyce said. Centre executive director Sian Lewis said the campaign has raised about $15,000 that will go toward replacing the furnace. She agreed with Boyce about the cost to business from substance abuse, noting many of the clients the centre works with are employees who have jobs, but their addictions are affecting output and attendance. Lewis is delighted the union has issued the challenge and is hoping the Kamloops business sector steps up. An energy audit is being done at the centre, with results expected by the end of March. Once that is received, Lewis said, a decision can be made on the best option to replace the furnace. “If everyone in Kamloops just gave us 50 cents,” Lewis said, “we could replace this thing.” Call 250-374-4634 to donate to the Turn Up the Heat campaign.

The pilot light of the furnace that heats Phoenix Centre goes out several times on some nights. Staff working at the agency go downstairs to reset it, but the fact they’re doing it many times shows the equipment is on its last legs. Estimates to replace the furnace range from $120,000 to $200,000, depending on which of three options presented turns out to be the right one — and that’s money the centre doesn’t have. That reality has prompted the Kamloops local of the United Steelworkers Union to donate $5,000 to the campaign — and issue a challenge to all corporations, businesses and unions in the city to do the same. “It’s time to crank up the thermostat on this fundraising and we think this corporate challenge to business to meet or beat our donation will help,” said Richard Boyce of Local 7619, which represents staff at Highland Valley Copper. He said the business sector can only benefit from a thriving, financial-

April start possible for United Church renos By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
The plan to renovate and redevelop a well-known downtown church is on track to begin this spring. Work on Kamloops United Church at Fourth Avenue and St. Paul Street, is expected to begin in April, with construction on a major housing project on the property to start later in the year. Part of the plan is to renovate and shrink the size of current church. Jennifer Keim, co-chair of the Kamloops United Church redevelopment committee, noted the renovation will mean less preschool and meeting room spaces in the church, along with smaller administration offices and hall. She said the church decided to downsize due to economics and to keep with its philosophy of “good stewardship. “I think the congregation has realized that in order to achieve all of our ministry goals, we have to look at all of our resources and potentially reallocating portions of them,” Keim told
KTW. “We’re going to try to provide all of the same great community support and programming in a much smaller footprint.” The church is also working with BC Housing to build a 61-unit complex of affordable housing on the same site. The total development, which has been planned for seven years, is expected to cost $12.8 million. The church has raised $900,000 from its congregation, but that amount could get a boost in the coming years. Church members
recently voted in favour of subdividing up to three onehectare plots of land at Camp Grafton in the Shuswap, to help pay for the redevelopment. The camp, which is located on Magna Bay and is about 18 hectares in size, is operated by the Camp Grafton Society and owned by the church. The camp was purchased more than a half-century ago by Dr. Hartley Grafton on behalf of the church. The congregation voted 92-26 on Sunday, Feb. 26, in favour of selling off a portion of the land.
However, Keim noted it could still be some time before the properties hit the market, if all three are even sold. She said the subdivision of the property still has to go through the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and internal church processes. It’s expected each chunk of land could be sold for amounts well into six figures. As for the camp, Keim said it will continue to run as it has in the past. For more information on Camp Grafton, go online to campgrafton.ca.

Life keeps adding colours to Brandt’s music By Dale Bass
That success includes a TV series, a production company and recordings and, after four years at home, he’s hit the road on a tour that brings him to Kamloops on Saturday, March 3, at Interior Savings Centre. “I missed it,” Brandt said of touring. “I wanted to get back out and I’m not sure how long I can be doing it, being on the road and being a dad. “The kids went with us on the first leg of the tour and Liz [his wife] is there because she sings backup. “The kids slept better on the road than they do at home so we might do it while they’re still young.” Travelling along with him is Greg Sczebel of Salmon Arm who, when he’s not out promoting his own June Award-winning music, plays backup with Brandt. Brandt’s not only travelling and singing, he’s writing songs, too. “I’ve never written from the perspective of being a parent and there are all these new colours to paint with.” He knows where he’ll be in July this year — at least from July 6 to July 15, when he’ll headline Century, The Calgary Stampede’s Centennial Grandstand Show. Brandt said he’s excited about it, returning to the place that gave his musical career its first kickstart. This time, though, he’s hoping it’s a bit better than the first time the newly minted, talent-show winner Paul Brandt performed at the stampede. “They called me up the next day and asked me if I’d like to sing and said it would be the first time anyone would see my name Paul Brandt up there in lights. “So, I said yes and I got there and my name was in lights and I went onstage and I looked out — and I was opening for the pig races. “There better not be any pigs in sight when I’m on stage this time,” Brandt said with a laugh. There are still tickets available for the show. Tickets are at the Interior Savings Centre box office, the Ticketmaster outlet a at Sahali Mall or at ticketmaster.ca.
STAFF REPORTER dale@kmoopsthisweek.com
There he was, just a teenager with a guitar, some musical talent and one big booming country voice. It was enough to see the young man win the talent contest at the Calgary Stampede many years ago and, with it, the chance to perform the next day on stage. He arrived with his nerves jangling and prepared to go on, only to hear one of the organizers trying to whip up the crowd to yell out the lad’s last name. “There he was getting them to do it syllable by syllable. Be-Lo-Ber-Syck-EE, or something like that. “So, after the show, when we got home, my parents said, ‘If you’re going to be doing this and having any success at it, you need a different last name’.” After checking out the names of nearby small towns and then flipping through the Carstairs phone book, a surname was finally chosen — Paul Belobersyscky was gone and Paul Brandt was born. It’s his legal name now, one the Canadian country superstar shares with a good friend. A few years after the one-time pediatric nurse decided music was his true calling, Brandt arrived at a show to find people walking around sporting Paul Brandt T-shirts. He didn’t have any in his merchandising. “So, I got to wondering who was doing this and were they trying to rip me off and I met a guy and asked him why he was wearing the shirt and he said, ‘Because I’m Paul Brandt. I own Brandt Trucking and it’s sponsoring this’. “Well, we became friends and he provided the trucks for the Convoy video we did. He even helped with our move back to Alberta from Nashville.” The move was scary, Brandt said. He headed to the acknowledged mecca of all country singers to see if he could make it, but missed his home, his family and the lifestyle he wanted for his wife and young children. “I was terrified to leave,” Brandt said, “but we’ve had nothing but success since we did it.”

That it does in the hilarious, comic masterpiece, Noises Off, by English playwright Michael Frayn and directed by Western Canada Theatre’s artistic director, Daryl Cloran. Act One starts with a housekeeper, Dotty Otley (Janet Michael) answering a telephone call and, just as she’s about to go off stage, a

As I looked around the audience after the show, I was glad to see diverse age groups pouring out of Sagebrush Theatre with smiles on their faces. I asked my son if he would be interested in watching more live theatre put on by WCT. He replied, “Would you be acting in it?” I quickly, without any thought, said, “No.” He responded, “Yeah, for sure.” I wasn’t sure how to take that but, at the

To top it off, they’re only hours away from opening night. In Act Two, the entire set rotates and the audience is taken backstage just minutes before the actors go on. Just moments before the curtain goes up, chaos erupts. But, the show must go on — and it does, even if an axe is being wielded at actors, jealous performers are getting even and another is becoming more intoxicated with each passing moment. In the final scene, the set is rotated back and we are taken to the funny ending of Nothing On, where things are beginning to go terribly wrong. Now, the only way to
deep voice bellows from the audience. I turn my head to see who is speaking so loudly during a show, only to realize that the voice is of director, Lloyd Dallas, played by Thom Marriott. “Take the newspaper, leave the sardines!” he shouts in a voice filled with utter exhaustion. It becomes clear we are viewing the final scene of a dress rehearsal for the play, Nothing On — and therein lies the nature of this farce. It’s a play about putting on a play. The laughter starts immediately when panic begins as lines are flubbed, fish are forgotten and a hard-ofhearing actor is nowhere to be found.

HEN Chelsea Reith makes her last turn at the B.C. Short Track Championships this weekend, her career with the Kamloops Long Blades might flash before her eyes. “For her, it’s kind of the last one,” said Sandi Vyse, the Long Blades’ head coach. “After France, who knows where she’ll go.” Reith, 17, will fly to Europe in August to begin a 10-month Rotary exchange. The longtime Long Blade, upon return from France, will get ready for life on Vancouver Island, where she will study at the University of Victoria. For 10 years, Reith
has plied her craft with the Long Blades at McArthur Island Sports Centre. She can recall her early days with the club, skating with Jessica Hewitt, who is now a member of the women’s national short-track team. “She used to be my idol,” Reith said. “I’d always try and skate with her and I remember the first time. “It was morning practise, and I remember skating behind her and I was like, ‘I’m so close. This is the best day.’” Reith might not know it, but she has occupied Hewitt’s role for an up-and-coming Long Blade, 12-year-old Dana Coulter. “I always want to try and catch up to her,” Coulter said of Reith, who has raced at several
national competitions and been a member of B.C.’s training team.
“She has really good technique and she goes a lot faster than me.”

The South Kamloops secondary student, under the guidance of head coach Kash Dhaliwal, excelled at the sport and came into favour with Victoria’s coaches. Reith did not rule out a return to the Long Blades, but it’s impossible to know where her university path will lead. She knows that — that’s why this weekend is so important. “It’s kind of sad,” she said. “I’ve been skating here for 10 years. It’s a big moment for me.”

T’S MIDNIGHT WHEN I BEGIN TO CLEAN THE KITCHEN. A few dishes and a pot could idle in the sink until morning but, considering the tenuous fabric that holds together the dawning moments of any day, it’s better if I don’t send today’s dried pasta sauce into tomorrow’s headspace. Minutes later, with dishes sudsed and rinsed and dripping dry in the rack, I should turn out the lights and close DARCIE HOSSACK my laptop. Bon Today has APPÉTIT been productive enough,
although stories and their characters never really sleep — and I can almost hear them nattering to me from atop my desk. Instead, I open the fridge and find it crowded with little bits of nothing that are past fresh. Creamed corn sticks to the inside of a plastic storage container as though the two substances have formed an epoxy. A tablespoon of cooked rice sours in a four-cup container. There are fuzzy blue cranberries that should have been muffined long before now, along with half a container of recently fresh pineapple spears now fizzing in their own juices. I close the door and then open it again with a sigh. It’s garbage day tomorrow. The black bin is outside already. It’s snowing.
OFFICE CLOSURE Please note that Kamloops This Week will be closed on Friday March 2, 2012 from 10:30am to 1:00pm to attend a celebration of life for a staff member who passed away recently. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we thank you for your understanding.
I don’t want to put on boots just to visit the curb. Besides, I argue with myself, leaving all this until tomorrow won’t change much. It’s winter — not like July, when the garage (where the garbage can resides during the week) is muggy, and chicken bones and salmon skin have to be stored in the freezer until pick-up day. Again, though, I think of tomorrow morning, of unnecessary distractions, of nattering stories — and I and get to work. Out with the liquified cucumber in the crisper drawer. Out with rubber carrots and dried rosemary sticks, the smear of miso and its colonies of fluffy fungus. Out with the braised fennel and last week’s potatoes. X See YIELD A31

Place over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly with a heatproof spatula. Reduce heat and simmer until the rice is tender (about 25 minutes), stirring frequently. When the rice is tender (al dente), add the sugar and cinnamon. Cook another five to 10 minutes. Combine cornstarch with whipping cream and add, stirring, into pudding. Cook until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add vanilla extract and raisins. Serve warm with vanilla bean ice cream. To serve chilled, transfer pudding to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

And, out with the lettuce that was supposed to be the start of a turned leaf. The freezer is next, though I only get as far as a carton of vanilla ice cream near the front. I fold back the flaps, dip a spoon into the box and lean over the sink. (The pose of sneakeaters everywhere.) It’s not great ice
cream. It’s gummy and a little glassy and has taken on the staleness of having been forgotten. Midnight, though, doesn’t encourage sound judgment — and, it’s past that. But then — plop! — the ice cream slips off the spoon and into the sink and I watch as it slides toward the drain. I rinse, then push the carton into the creamed
corn and fennel and tie the bag. With the contents of the fridge now thinned, I can better see what manner of viable things remain. Farfalle pasta and braised short ribs just need a shallot and a splash of cream to marry them into revised leftovers. And, in a container, just a day old, remains a quarter cup of rice

TRAVEL
Philadelphia freedom — visit City of Brotherly Love By Jamie Ross SPECIAL TO KTW travelwriterstales.com
I
HAVE A FASCINATION WITH ALL THINGS HISTORICAL AND, IF EVER A COMMUNITY HAS PUT ITS STAMP ON THE FACE OF AMERICAN HISTORY, PHILADELPHIA IS IT. It was a hotbed of activity during America’s struggle for independence from Britain, with the likes of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and John Adams walking her streets. As such, Philadelphia is a city I’ve always wanted to see. The trouble was, it was a spring minor hockey tournament that gave me the opportunity to visit, so I was accompanied by my 13-year-old hockeyplaying son who felt the most important moment in history was the Canucks run to the Stanley Cup final a year ago. Philadelphia’s efficient train service allowed us easy access to the downtown core and gave me the opportunity to share some
literature with my son and give him a synopsis on American history. Much of the United States we know today began in Philadelphia. This was the birthplace of American democracy, site of the earliest public parks, first volunteer fire association and first hospital. It served as the nation’s capital. The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Franklin Institute are familiar landmarks — as is the Philly cheesesteak, my son pointed out, always thinking of his stomach. So, first stop was
the bustling Reading Terminal Market, where we were drawn by the alluring aroma of the gooey sandwich. Here in Philadelphia, cheesesteaks are a civic icon, a tourist draw and a cultural obsession — a long, crusty roll filled with thinly sliced sauteed steak and provolone cheese, served with or without onions. A city tour is always my favourite way to learn about an unfamiliar community. You can get your bearings and then decide what attractions need further investigation. We jumped on the
Big Bus Company’s authentic English double-decker bus and enjoyed a narrated tour of the downtown. Passengers can hop off and on the buses at any of the 20 stops — say, to run up the Rocky steps and dance around with arms raised, just like Stallone. “Embarrassing,” said my son, “and that’s such an old, old movie.” As the bus navigated the city’s tight downtown streets, our guide reminded us of Philadelphia’s most notable buildings, including City Hall, which is the tallest
masonry building in the world, with granite walls up to 22 feet thick. The building is topped by a 27-ton bronze statue of William Penn, who founded the city in 1682. He named the new town Philadelphia, derived from Greek words meaning “city of brotherly love.” For a bird’s eye view, we headed up to an observation deck, right below the statue. Philadelphia is an art and museum lover’s paradise, which didn’t impress my son, but a visit to the Franklin
Institute Science Museum did. Here is a hands-on, interactive museum with science exhibits to explore, including a “walk” through human heart. Our visit included a special exhibition on mummies, a suitably morbid display for a boy who has watched The Mummy many times. One stop my son looked forward to was Eastern State Penitentiary. We wandered its dank, dark foreboding corridors and I was mostly able to convince my son breaking the law is a bad thing — that is, until we checked out the comfortable cell where Al Capone spent a year of his life. The prison initiated a revolutionary system of incarceration that focused more on reform than punishment. Prisoners had their own cells and were not allowed to communicate with one another. Needless to say, mental illness was rampant as a result of the isolation and confinement.
250-314-9923
101- 929 Laval Crescent, Kamloops
Our tour ended at the Independence National Park which includes the Liberty Bell Center, Independence Hall, the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the small colonial home of Betsy Ross, who is credited with sewing the first American flag. I think my son was suitably impressed, but he did hurry me off to an atmospheric restaurant that had been recommended by our tour guide, El Vez. The guide said there was a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling. It turned out to be a fancy pink peddlebike, but the table-side guacamole and tostadas menus, along with a huge margarita selection for me, had our attention anyway. Philadelphia reflects the ideals that can interest both father and son alike: A love of sports, good food, a strong arts culture and an interesting history. The locals have their own distinct, streetwise accent and they’re known for their frank, straightforward manner.

In Loving Memory of
ADELINA SPINA
Doctor William Darrell Turner B.A. Doctor of Chiropractic
Deny me not one final gift For all who come to see A single lasting proof that says I loved... and you loved me.
On Monday, February 27, 2012 Dr. William Darrell Turner passed away at the age of 81 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kathleen. His children Dr. Brian D. (Diane), Mrs Heather D. Knoedler and Dr. Kevin D.(Monique), grandchild Jessica (Chris) and great grandchild Linden and grandchildren Alex, Noah, Rhyanna, Scott, Kerry and Derrick, all have loved and honoured you and have been proud to have you as their Dad & Grand-dad. Dr. Turner was born in Calgary Alberta on November 7, 1930. Then moved to Ladner in 1937 where he worked with his parents on their Dairy Farm, while going to U.B.C. Father deceased 1947, Mother in 1994. He graduated from UBC and entered the Chiropractic College in Toronto in 1953 for four years study. He and Kathleen married in 1954 and Brian his first son attended his father’s graduation in 1957. He opened his Chiropractic office in the Klapstock Building on Second Avenue in October 1957. Second son Glenn Douglas, nine months old went home to his Heavenly Father in 1960. My husband was a most sincere gentleman, ever such a caring, extremely dedicated and an excellent Dr. of Chiropractic to all his patients. He surely loved his work immensely. Marvelous sense of humour. Very pleased with and loved his children and grandchildren, and great grand-child, but wished them wisdom and independence. His two sons followed their Dad and became Chiropractors and he truly taught them well in this wonderful profession. He was a very devoted, understanding and loving husband. A bit bossy at times. I will miss you dreadfully but I’ll be coming in time! Of course Sandy will be lost without you also. You were tops with him! He retired July 31st 2010 after 53 years of wonderful Chiropractic service. He helped thousands from all over Canada to better health. He was given many recognitions from the Chiropractic College, and was a Charter member of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic Governors’ Club. He contributed much to the College. He was extremely proud of his profession. He was a member of the Ancient Light Lodge #88 AF and AM BCR Ladner B.C., also a member of Kamloops South Rotary Club for many years, and a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. Our very sincere thanks to all the wonderful nursing care that was given to my husband while at the hospital. God Bless you all. No service by request. Cremation. Any remembrances if desired to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, 6100 Leslie Street, Toronto Ontario M2H 3J1 in memory of Dr. Turner

One Final Gift
Oct 5, 1945 - Feb. 25, 2006
Scatter me not to restless winds, Nor toss my ashes to the sea. Remember now those years gone by When loving gifts I gave to thee. We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new We thought about you yesterday And days before that too. We think of you in silence We often speak your name All we have are memories And your picture in a frame Your memory is a keepsake With which we’ll never part God has you in his keeping We have you in our hearts.
Love, Your Family
Remember now the happy times The family ties we shared. Don’t leave my resting place unmarked As though you never cared.
In Loving Memory of
Edna Hellen Mollett Apr. 6, 1937 - Feb 26, 2012
Mrs. Edna Hellen Mollett passed away at the age of 74 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops on Feb. 26, 2012. Edna was born on Apr. 6, 1937 to Frank and Agnes Clemes. She grew up in Spences Bridge with her older sister Donna. She married Mr. Louie Mollett on Dec 24, 1979 and were happily married for 30 years. She worked in the laundry at RIH for 26 years. She enjoyed all the girls down there and making each day a happy one for everyone. When Edna wasn’t working she enjoyed spending her time with her family and close friends camping, fishing, hunting, and travelling. She had a great love for her family and kept a positive attitude for life no matter what happened. She had a big heart with room for everyone that loved without exception. Edna is survived by her sister Donna, son Harold, grandchildren Mandy, Derek, and Sean, and great grandchildren that brought her so much joy in her later years. She is pre-deceased by her husband Louie Mollett, in 2009. Goodbye my family, my life is past. I loved you all to the very last. Weep not for me, but courage take Love each other for my sake For those you love don’t go away They walk beside you every day.
By son Harold and Crystal Mom will be sadly missed. At Edna’s request there will be no service. Internment will occur at a later date. Donations can be made to the S.P.C.A. And thank you to all the girls in dialisis for looking after her!
Brown 1947-2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father Stephen Alexander Brown, of Logan Lake BC. Dad passed away peacefully in his home on January 1, 2012 at sixty-four years of age. Stephen was predeceased by his parents Tom and Irene Brown, as well as his brothers Tom Brown and Henry Brown. Stephen is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of many years, Judy Brown; his two daughters Sara and Jenny Brown, and his son Robbie Brown. Stephen is also survived by his brothers Tim, Jamie and Willie Brown – as well as their respective children. For many years Stephen worked for Highland Valley Copper Mine. Prior to that, he worked in Ànance, and in his early years worked as a part of the armed forces. He fondly recalled his time working as a lifeguard, as he had a life-long passion for swimming and athleticism. Throughout his life Dad did many things and travelled to many places. He lived all over Canada, from East Coast PEI to Ontario; he spent a great deal of time in Toronto. He lived in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and later to settled for many years in Kamloops BC, before retiring to Logan Lake BC. Dad traversed much of the wild in Canada, hunting, camping, and hiking all over, including areas in the Kootenays, the Interior, and the Rockies. He loved to read – everything from Shakespeare to Tolkien to Louis L’Amour. He loved music by artists such as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Amongst family and friends he was often referred to as “The Duke” owing to his admiration of John Wayne, his penchant for roughing it out in the bush, and his uncanny ability to always do things his own way. In respect of his wishes there was no formal ceremony. We miss Dad so very, very much. We take some comfort in knowing Dad’s cremated remains will be spread in various places – enveloping Dad in the majesty and tranquility of nature that he so passionately loved and appreciated his whole life.

Ken has travelled the globe for more than a decade, looking for adventure in the wildest places he could Ànd. He has worked in Tunisia, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, every region of BC and Alberta, and most recently near Managua, Nicaragua, always in the some of the most dangerous regions of the world. His most recent posting was General Manager of IFN Nicaragua, an International Forest Company. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Laura Sanders, Ken leaves behind his wife Amber, and his daughter Ashton, along with four brothers, Ron (Shelley), Jerry (Margaret), Lorne (Karen), Alan (Jill), all the “cousins” (nieces and nephews) and too many good friends to mention. If he was at the event, it was guaranteed to include excitement and unimaginable surprises. Ken’s many near-death experiences are legendary, and the retelling of his many hair-raising adventures will continue to provide entertainment for all his friends forever. His loyal amigos can recount these tales that are guaranteed to bring fear to most, terror to many, but laughter and tears to all. Ken was a charming and charismatic individual who will be remembered fondly by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. A memorial is being planned for 11 AM March 3, at Coquihalla Middle School, in Merritt BC. No Áowers, by request. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice, or given to Ken’s family to determine a charity on your behalf.
The Angel On Your Shoulder By Jackie Huston Lena, Wisconsin
There’s an angel on your shoulder Though you may not know she’s there, She watches over you day and night And keeps you in her care. There’s an angel on your shoulder Watching you learn and grow Keeping you safe from danger And nurturing your soul. She’ll be there through your triumphs She’ll dance on clouds with pride, She’ll hold your hand through disappointments and fears, Standing faithfully by your side. In her lifetime this angel was strong and true, And stood up for what was right. In your life you’ll be faced with decisions and trials And she’ll shine down her guiding light. Life holds so much in store for you, So remember as you grow older, There are no heights you cannot reach ‘Cause there’s an angel on your shoulder.
