“The Career and Job Fair is an excellent and vital opportunity for employers and potential employees to meet and network,” said COTR Career and Placement Of¿cer Sheena Svitich. The event will bring companies into direct contact with COTR students as well as area secondary school students, offering businesses a chance to get young people interested in their industry. Keith Powell, publisher of Kootenay Business Magazine commented, “I think this annual event offers an important bene¿t for businesses, not only to meet the students who

are being trained at College of the Rockies, but to reach secondary school students who are thinking of the future and others who are currently unemployed but interested exploring new options. “The section of the Career and Job Fair called the Summer Job Alley will feature employers especially interested in recruiting young people for summer jobs. Ric’s Lounge & Grill started with a Prince George man’s desire to start a sustainable business that catered to people looking for outstanding food and good company. But creating food that makes patrons want to come back again and again isn’t easy. “What exactly does ‘cook’ mean? It means starting at the beginning—making from scratch and using the best ingredients—fresh herbs instead of dried wherever possible; butter, not margarine, always, Macedonian feta because it’s the best, period; real cream, not arti¿cial thickener, because real food is not made with arti¿cial thickener; sauces that are made in small batches, not in

a huge factor, because people can taste the unmistakable zing of fresh ginger. They can. And they care,” states a Ric’s Lounge & Grill information package. Having a great attitude towards food preparation is one thing, but it doesn’t fully explain why this restaurant chain has managed to grow and prosper, even in dif¿cult ¿nancial times. It is this care for the food matched with the level of experience of the staff and management that creates atmosphere. The staff are handpicked and highly trained and experts at making a meal into an event. This careful picking of experienced staff comes naturally at Ric’s

Lounge & Grill. President Sal Gupta started humbly in the restaurant business more than 30 years ago at The Keg, one of the countries premiere steakhouse chains. As a matter of fact, he made the position of General Manager before he was old enough to drink there! After spending more than two decades with The Keg, Sal and his brother Sunny and their extended families used their experience, business acumen and desire to create a lasting testament to good taste, ¿ne atmosphere and warm companionship that are the hallmarks of the Ric’s Lounge & Grill chain of family restaurants. Fair Fight for Food Challenge Bentall Kennedy today launched its Fare Fight For Food Challenge, a national initiative that will partner Bentall Kennedy-managed shopping centres in 17 locations across Canada with local food banks. During the next eight months, Tamarack Centre and the Cranbrook Food Bank Society will host special events and promotions to raise awareness about hunger in our communities and across our country. Tamarack Centre will also compete against other participating malls across Canada, for funds raised and pounds of food collected. Winners will be given one of ¿ve $10,000 grants, to be donated to the winner’s partner food bank. “In Canada, food bank usage is on the rise and Bentall Kennedy is determined to make a difference in the communities in which we live and work” said John Minas, Vice President, Retail Services East. Food Banks Canada’s website indicates that each month, close to 900,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks, and 38% of those helped are children and youth. “Our goal is to raise $75,000 & collect 20,000 pounds of food during our national challenge” said John Minas, Vice President, Retail Services East. All of the proceeds collected during fundraising will go to the partner food banks across Canada. The shopping centre that raises the most money will earn its partner food bank an additional $10,000. Other grant categories include: Most amount of money fundraised per shopping centre square foot; Most amount of non-perishable food collected (by weight); Highest amount of corporate/business/service club monetary donation received; and lastly most amount of shopper/supporter e-mail addresses collected from the national on-line contest. For more information about Bentall Kennedy’s Fare Fight For Food campaign, visit fare¿ghtforfood.ca. Go on-line for a chance to WIN Groceries for a Year (A $3,000 Value) and support their local Food Bank!

3 Facts You Need To Know About... BC’s Budget 1. A budget is a careful estimate of expenses & revenue resulting in a surplus or deficit. In 10 budgets, our government has estimated correctly, with 2009 the one exception. That is why BC has a AAA credit rating and is considered an economic success story around the world. 2. While Europe, Japan, the US and Ontario struggle, BC remains strong: our employment is higher than the Canadian average, our income taxes are lower and take home pay has risen over our years in government. 3. BC’s hard earned positive outlook depends on tough but necessary decisions on spending. We cannot borrow against the future of our children to satisfy all of the demands for more money. Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Starting from Seed There is something in our genetic make-up that just makes us feel better when we see the first sign of things "growing", whether it be outside in the garden or the little starter pots on our window sill. At the moment, a quick look out the window shows that we are a little ways away from growing outside. We can however, start growing things inside, to give us a jump on spring. You must be careful and watch your instructions on the seed packages. For example, unless you have some serious growing space inside, it is probably a little early to start plants like tomatoes. It is a perfect time to start things like pansies, petunias and geraniums. Wait a little longer to start your veggies. Of course times vary, depending on your growing conditions, if you have greenhouse space or what you are growing. The back of a seed package will give you all of the information you need to successfully grow that specific plant from seed. This includes the time to seed, seed depth, spacing, time until germination and more. Lots of times, the package also contains information you can use throughout the growing season, such as fertilizing tips, planting requirements or even harvesting tips and recipes. Recycling is a good thing, but when it comes to starting seeds, it is best to use new seed trays and clean containers each season. Old, unclean pots and inserts can carry pests, diseases and residual fertilizers which can greatly affect the germination and success of your seeds. A common problem called damping off, is a fungal infection that attacks the seedlings. Just as they begin to grow and look like something, they suddenly wilt and rot off at the soil level. This fungus can easily live on old containers and pots. The other key ingredient to successfully growing seeds is the growing media. Lots of folks call this dirt. We in the garden centre know this as growing media or soilless mix. It is a peat-based growing media that contains peat, vermiculite, perlite and some even have nutrients and a beneficial fungus in them. We carry a product called BX which comes in many blends and we also carry Sunshine mixes – again in many blends. Depending on the quantity you need, what you are growing will determine what to get. We start all of our plants in our greenhouses in a BX blend. So, you see you can use the same as we commercial growers. All of these blends offer consistent drainage and are sterilized to give you a clean, fresh start. Jiffy pellets and pots are another option. Jiffy pellets are small dics of compressed peat encased in a thin net. They increase in size after water is added, giving the seed a light, airy and well drained container to grow in. The pellets can be directly transplanted into the ground, but a tip to remember is to remove the thin netting when planting to allow the roots to escape faster. When planting seeds in trays, ensure the growing media is damp. Plant the seed according to the directions given. It helps to supply bottom heat such as the top of a fridge, or a heating germination mat. Covering the trays with domes or glass can help to retain humidity which in turn helps germination. Once seeds have germinated, you need to consider light levels. Inadequate light can lead to spindly seedlings that stretch. If you don't have adequate spots with sufficient light, consider buying a fluorescent or high intensity plant light. They are very reasonably priced and last a long time. A seed comes with all its food that it needs to germinate. Once it is growing, however, it needs fertilizer in order to keep growing properly. This is especially important if you are growing in very small containers as they will utilize the nutrients in that space very quickly. How much food you should use can vary, depending on what you are growing and how long you will have it inside. These are the basics of seed starting. There are many products out there to help you be successful. So come on down and check out the biggest selection of seeds in the entire Kootenays. And ask any questions you may have – someone here can help you out. And if you can't find what you are looking for, perhaps I can get it in for you. Till next time... happy growing. Submitted by Jen

Submitted The Cranbrook Bantam Tier 3 Ice got some late game heroics by their captain Brandon Ouilette and again in overtime as the Bantam Ice won the East Kootenay A Division Banner with a dramatic 7-6 overtime win over the Invermere Rockies Sunday afternoon at the Eddie Mountain Arena in Invermere. The round-robin tournament featuring ¿ve teams from Cranbrook, Creston, Elk Valley, White¿sh and Invermere got off to a rough start for the Ice as the club dropped a 7-2 decision to Invermere Friday night to open the weekend. With almost no room for error the rest of the way, the Ice defeated White¿sh 5-2 Saturday morning, beat Creston 4-1 later that afternoon and then dumped Elk Valley 6-2 to set up the rematch in the championship ¿nal against Invermere. The see-saw battle saw the Ice go up by a goal ¿ve times only to have the Rockies knot the score every time. In the third period Invermere took their ¿rst lead 6-5 on Nick Hoobanoff’s 3rd of the game and held off the Ice right up until the ¿nal minute, setting up the ¿nale. With the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker a shallow dump-in allowed Ouilette to come off the boards with the puck. He shovelled the puck at the net that managed to beat the Rockies netminder to tie at 6 with 11.9 seconds left in the game. With all the momentum, two minutes into overtime Ouilette again was the hero after he took a pass from Wyatt Manning, walked out of the corner and deked the goaltender for the hat-trick goal and the championship winner. The Ice got goals from Kortlen Tschetters, James Rota, Jacob Bromley, Chase Leroux and Ouilette, with the hattrick, while Brady Reid got the win in goal.

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Notice to Motorists Regarding Pothole Damage Claims Please be advised of and consider the following:

What Causes Potholes?

Potholes are weather related and can occur at any time of the year. They are normally formed following extreme weather, with the freezing and thawing of sub-surface water from rain or snow runoff that has infiltrated into the ground through surface cracks. The weakening of the pavement structure combined with heavy traffic loads eventually leads to the formation of potholes.

The Law In British Columbia

The law in British Columbia does not make a municipality legally responsible to ensure that its roads are always free of defects or hazards such as potholes and The Local Government Act, Section 288, provides that a municipality does not have the legal liability for damages that arise from a breakdown in a road. The municipality must be found to have been negligent in the particular circumstances. Motorists are advised that written notice of intent to claim must be provided to a municipality within two (2) months of the events that give rise to the claim – per The Local Government Act, Section 286.

Business License Bylaw

Under this bylaw, no person shall carry on a business within the City with having obtained a valid Business License from City Hall. This includes all regular business licenses, temporary and seasonal licenses. Licenses must be prominently displayed at all times in the business area of the premise to which the public has access. Licenses are granted for a one year period on the first day of January and end on the 31st of December of each and every year. Visit our website and click on ‘Bylaws’ for more on all of our City bylaws.

How Does The City of Cranbrook Respond to Potholes?

The City deals with a large network of streets and Public Works has a fixed number of work crews, equipment and other resources with which it can respond to and repair road defects. When a pothole is reported to the City, the repair work is scheduled and carried out accordingly. In normal circumstances the City can respond to pothole repairs in a timely manner. During extreme and unfavourable weather conditions when pothole problems are numerous and proper repair work cannot be carried out, only temporary repairs will be made until conditions improve. To report potholes, please contact the City of Cranbrook Public Works Department at 250-4890218.

Recognizing that the need for donations is greater than ever at local food banks across the nation, Curves International is kicking off the 2012 Curves Food Drive on March 1 with a challenge to all Curves Clubs

to meet or exceed last year’s donations. Each club, including Curves of Cranbrook, is asking its members to donate bags of non-perishable food or cash throughout the month of March to support their local

community food bank. In addition, Curves of Cranbrook will waive the joining fee for new members who bring in a bag of non-perishable food or donate $30 to their local food bank from March 12 to 25. “Curves of Cranbrook is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our members, so the food drive is a natural extension of

that commitment to the whole community, said a Curves of Cranbrook staff member. “Many families are struggling with basic expenses and need some help to make ends meet. Our food drive gives our members a way to reach out and support their neighbors. With a theme of “Good for your body and your soul, this year’s drive encourages Curves members to feel doubly good about themselves

as they make time to exercise for good health and take time to help others in the community with a donation of nutritious food. Oct. 25, 1946-March 3, 2011 It’s hard to believe that a year has come and gone, It seems like only yesterday that you were taken from us. You gave no one a last farewell. You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. A million times we have missed you. A million tears we have cried. If love alone could have saved you, You would never have gone away. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. In our hearts you hold a place no one else can ¿ll. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God took you home. We thank God he made you such a dear Husband, Father, and friend while you were here. Angels carry our love and kisses to you. We carry your heart in our hearts. Someday, we will be together again. We will love you always. Pearl; Brent, Dean, Shelley and all their families

Debbie and Gord Campbell March 7, 1987 It takes two special people, To make a loving pair. There’s a joy just being around you, A feeling we love to share. We send anniversary wishes to you, For years of joy and pleasure. May each year keep getting better, With memories to treasure.

Congratulations as you celebrate your Silver Wedding Anniversary Love your Family

They say there is a reason. They say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel. For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles. No-one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried.
