British Columbia’s Labour Relations Board (LRB) has ruled public school teachers in the province may initiate further job action and walk out of the classrooms. A full withdrawal of services for up to three instructional days is allowed by the ruling, providing prior notice of at least two school days is given. Following that, teachers may also be off the job one out of five days a week, again with notice of not less than two days. Falling on the cusp of Education
Minister George Abbott tabling legislation on Feb. 28 to force an end of the teachers’ job action, the LRB is effectively providing B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) members a legal route to escalate the current limited strike action. Cariboo-Chilcotin Teachers’ Federation president Joan Erb says LRB’s decision on a limited withdrawal of services is “reasonable.” “It provides the best of both worlds to both sides. “Parents will be happy because there will be two days minimum notice given.” The thing that really surprises her is picket lines are not allowed in the ruling,

Grizzly bear pâté, beaver, moose and deer were just some of the tasty treats people were able to sample at the Lone Butte Fish & Wildlife Association (LBFWA) Wild Game Dinner at the 100 Mile Community Hall, Feb. 25. Roast bison was the main course, and LBFWA member Jude Dion says the dinner was phenomenal and the dance that followed had people up and cutting a rug until nearly 2 a.m. Earlier in the day, the hall was filled with displays and demonstrations by local outdoors organizations. “The different groups really did a super job inside the hall. It was something to see.” Free antler scoring was also offered, with the most notable trophy of the day being a mule deer antler that scored 190 inches. DVD offers safety tips for children Injury is the leading cause of death among Canadian children and youth. Preventable injuries, such as falls, burns, choking and poisonings, are the most common cause of hospital visits for young children in Canada. Each year, approximately 2,900 infants, toddlers and preschoolers under five years go to BC Children’s Hospital emergency department for treatment of preventable injuries. Up to 90 per cent of these injuries are pre-
ventable. Give Your Child a Safe Start helps parents, caregivers, and educators raise awareness of the prevention of unintentional injuries in this age group. This new educational resource provides
safety tips on the prevention of burns and scalds, choking, falls, and poisoning. It also gives straightforward useful information on car safety, product safety, safe sleeping, and water safety. The 30-minute video includes powerful stories from parents and caregivers whose children were injured, often in a split second.
BC Children’s Hospital, with financial support from the Provincial Health Services Authority’s Population and Public Health Program, is distributing Give Your Child a Safe Start DVDs to public health units and non-profit organizations across British Columbia, along with an accompanying booklet, for use in pre-natal classes,

Last weekend was quiet for minor hockey, with the RE/MAX Cup adult hockey tournament tying up home ice at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre and Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache. A few teams played in out-of-town tournaments, including the Sunrise Ford Mustangs Peewee squad which travelled to McBride. They started with a 5-2 loss to Edson, with both 100 Mile House goals scored by Masen Fernandes. The Mustangs had a tough
go with Chase in game 2, suffering an 11-3 loss with goals by Caden MacMillan, Fernandes and Reid Davidson. The team then lost to McBride 9-5, with their last three goals scored in the third period. Davidson was good for a hat trick. Fernandes notched one as did Kolton Allwood. Atom division Primal Electric Shockers and Free Press Sharp Shooters were in Lillooet where they had mixed results. The Shockers opened with an 8-5 loss to Lillooet, but turned it around in game 2 against Williams Lake with an 11-0 shutout victory. Game
2 ended in a 4-2 Kamloops victory, and the Shockers’ final with Lillooet ended in a 4-3 loss. Free Press skated to a 2-and-2 record, opening with an 8-3 loss to Kamloops and following up with a 5-2 defeat to Mission. They met Williams Lake in game 3 and dominated with an 11-1 victory. They met Williams Lake again and won 10-3. Novice Central RV Ramblers and Transformers Collision squeezed in a game at Rolf Zeis where the Ramblers led all the way to a 7-2 win, with a hat trick scored by Mason Pincott.

Somebody had to wash the dishes at St. Timothy Anglican Church’s annual Pancake Supper on Feb. 21, and Blake MacLeod was doing a mighty fine job. Road conditions were poor, so they didn’t get their normal turnout.
Janet Wright, 72, of 108 Mile, was disappointed about cancellation of the 2012 Cariboo Marathon, so she skied the 50-kilometre course on Feb. 26, anyway. A few friends accompanied her on the first 20-km stretch and Wright finished the remaining 30-km by herself. Wright has skied the Cariboo Marathon 23 times, completing the 50-km distance each time.

Local champion Colton Searls is off to Calgary to compete in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Order of Chaos, regional event, on March 10. Searls says he beat all the local challengers and won both tournaments to reach the qualifying level to attend the regional event. “At the very least, the top 4 participants [in the Calgary tournament] will get invites to attend the national tour. Queen Elizabeth II’s personal Canadian flag is usually flown above the British Columbia legislature only during her visits, a tradition that was added Feb. 6 to mark her 60th year on the throne. The flag was raised at the legislature at sunrise, commemorating Feb. 6, 1952 when Elizabeth II began her reign after her father King George VI died. Elizabeth II is now the longestserving British monarch after Queen Victoria. Premier Christy Clark issued a statement congratulating the Queen on the occasion. “Her Majesty is no stranger to British Columbia,” Clark said. “She has visited more than a dozen cities, towns and communities during her four tours to our province, including in 1971 to mark the centennial anniversary of B.C.

Artist paints soulful windows Mile, she became involved with the Art Students Gallery in 100 Mile and eventually provided art lessons for students. Now, she is a recognized critic for art students. Joanne is currently doing window painting, using acrylic paints that work well on glass, for a number of local businesses. Salmon disease surveillance in B.C. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is seeking comments on a disease surveillance plan for salmon in British Columbia. The aim of the surveillance is to get a comprehensive picture of the health status of B.C. salmon. Fish will be tested for three diseases: infectious haematopoietic necrosis, infectious pancreatic necrosis and infectious salmon anaemia. The CFIA will lead the surveillance with support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the province of B.C. and industry. All testing, as well as any activities undertaken to respond to confirmed cases of disease, will be directed by science, international guidelines and national aquatic animal-health requirements. Approximately 5,000 wild salmon will be collected per year for a minimum of two years, starting in this spring. In addition, the CFIA will evaluate ongoing, industry-led testing of farmed salmon.
