Labour dispute intensifies Teachers talk full-scale strike as B.C. government tables back-to-work bill CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER
A
s the provincial government this week tabled legislation that would suspend all strike action, Delta teachers and their colleagues across the province voted whether or not to escalate their ongoing job action. Paul Steer, president of the Delta Teachers' Association, said walking off the job would send "an unequivocal message to government that teachers are not going to accept what is really a cynical political tactic by the government." On Tuesday (Feb. 28), the Labour Relations Board gave B.C. teachers a green light to legally strike for up to three days next week. Teachers voted on the matter Tuesday and Wednesday, with results released after the Leader's deadline. Also on Tuesday, Education Minister George Abbott introduced the "Education Improvement Act." The legislation imposes a six-month "cooling-off period" and sets up appointment of a mediator to look at non-monetary issues such as class size and composition. Steer called the move to legislate "excessive," "unnecessary" and "unreasonable." "The purpose of the legislation is to erode teachers' bargaining rights," he said. "It forc-

es us into an artificial mediation process. "[The job action] has been legal since day one. Teachers have bent over backwards to make sure they are abiding by essential services legislation," he added. Abbott's back-to-work decision came after the release of a report by assistant deputy minister for industrial relations Trevor Hughes, stating a negotiated settlement between the B.C. Teachers' Federation and the government's bargaining agent, the B.C. Public School Employers' Association, would be unlikely. Abbott's legislation extends the current teacher contract terms until the end of August, imposing the government's twoyear "net zero" wage mandate that most other government unions have agreed to voluntarily. It gives a yet-to-be-named mediator until June 30 to seek agreement on issues other than pay and benefits, such as class size and composition. The legislation also puts in place a new fund to address class size and special needs support, to respond to a court decision last year that said those issues were taken out of teacher contracts without adequate consultation. It provides $30 million extra this year, $60 million next year and $75 million each year after that, amounts the BCTF has rejected as far too little. "Teachers will be upset, but in some
cases they will be relieved," Abbott said after announcing the plan to legislate. "The union leadership will take a dim view of it, but I will not let a dispute among adults affect kids." Teachers in B.C. have been taking part in limited job action since September, when contract talks between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the province’s bargaining agent, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, broke down last summer. Teachers have been without a contract since June. For Delta Board of Education Chair Dale Saip, news that B.C.'s teachers will be legislated back to work is unfortunate, but it is of the "utmost importance" the school system returns to normal, he said. "In recognizing that the kids have to be put first, I think we need some solution," Saip said. "Sometimes tough decisions need to be made, and I think they're being made." In Delta, Saip said teachers have tried their best to work within the bounds of the job action, but said students have been affected. "I think it has affected the way our system works. I know it's put added pressure on resources and on the administrators," he said. "We'll let the adults fight it out, and in the meantime we'll get the kids looked after." —With files from Tom Fletcher

Delta will soon be tapping into its famous sunny weather to lessen its carbon footprint when heating community swimming pools. Long known to have, on average, more hours of sunshine than most other Lower Mainland communities, three of Delta's public pools will benefit from solar hot water systems. The Corporation of Delta will use $348,000 from Canada’s Gas Tax Fund to integrate the systems into three existing pools: the indoor pool at the Ladner Leisure Centre, and outdoor community pools in North Delta and Ladner. “Delta continues to build on the success of our solar hot water system at Municipal Hall,” said Mayor Lois Jackson at an announcement Wednesday (Feb. 22) at Ladner Leisure Centre. “We are so pleased to have the support of the federal government and UBCM to build on our success and bring greater attention to this technology throughout our community. It is critical we continue with initiatives that demonstrate sustainable and renewable energy such as solar hot water technology.” —Staff writer

Ladner teen vies for national pageant title Recent Delta Secondary school grad among the finalists for Miss World Canada 2012 CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER
Kiana Passmore, 18, is in the running to be Miss World Canada. Contributed photo
Growing up, Ladner resident Kiana Passmore remembers gathering around the TV with her family to watch the glitz and glamour of the annual Miss World pageant. Part of the fun was commenting on each contestant's choice of evening wear. Those comments and critiques will be front of mind for Passmore when she selects her own gown to wear onstage during her first national pageant this
spring. The 18-year-old Delta Secondary grad is a finalist for Miss World Canada 2012. She will compete for the title with other young women aged 17-24 from across the country at a crowning gala May 13 at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond. "I'm very optimistic about where this is going to take me," Passmore says. "I want to be a very inspiring role model." Passmore is a familiar voice in South Delta. The singer has performed at a number of local fund-
raisers and events over the years and, outside the community, she has also performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival and was a top 10 finalist for a Beat 94.5 radio station contest. Not surprisingly, when it comes to the talent portion of the pageant, Passmore will likely be armed with a microphone. All the Miss World Canada finalists are tasked with raising money for Variety–The Children's Charity in advance of the crowning gala. It's a charity Passmore,
an active volunteer, has been involved with for many years, and she has come to know the kids who benefit from her fundraising efforts. Passmore is planning fundraising events in March to raise money for
Variety, and is also seeking sponsors to support her bid for the Miss World Canada crown. The winner of Miss World Canada will receive an all-expense paid trip to Ordos in China to compete in the Miss World
pageant, as well as scholarships, prizes, and leadership opportunities. For details about Passmore's fundraising events, or for sponsorship information, visit www.kianaformissworldcanada.webstarts.com.

New beach facility expected to open in time for summer Centennial Beach-goers should be able to enjoy sun, sand, surf and a brand new concession stand stand this summer. According to the project manager, the currently under-construction food concession and washroom facility is on track to be fully operational in time for the busy season. "We'll definitely be open for springtime," said Mitch Sokalski, west area manager for Metro Vancouver Regional Parks, which is in charge of the project. Sokalski explained the facility will open in stages, with the public washrooms to be ready April 1. "And then by the late spring, busy summer season, our concession will be opened," he said. A small retail kiosk will also be ready for business in time for summer, he added. The existing concession stand and washrooms— which are now considered outdated and do not

With current costs standing at about $2.6 million, the new beach facility—located adjacent to the children's playground—will incorporate two buildings connected by a breezeway and cover 4,413-squarefeet. "It's a very impressive facility. I think people are going to really enjoy it," Sokalski said. If all goes according to plan, Sokalski said an official grand opening will take place June 17—the same day as the annual Sunday in the Park event hosted by the Cammidge House Committee, Tsawwassen/Boundary Bay Lions Club and Metro Vancouver. Metro Vancouver leases the Centennial Beach land—just over six hectares—from the Corporation of Delta. —Christine Lyon

LETTERS Fire shows Fraser River no place for jet fuel tank farm The Cherry Point refinery fire proved to the world how critical it is to have professionals in the business of working with jet fuel. Accidents are going to happen and whether this one turns out to be human error, mechanical or something else, the end result of the incident was it was contained swiftly and professionally. The Cherry Point refinery has a great safety record and they even have their own team of firefighters who where first on the scene. Within one hour the fire had been diminished significantly, and within 90 minutes no flames were visible. In contrast, the nonprofit organization, VAFFC (Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation) has no experience and no accountability to deal with potential disasters like this one. The B.C. EAO (Environmental Assessment Office) and the federal government need to understand that if there was even a minor incident it could catapult into a major environmental disaster in a very short period of time. Mother Nature always has the last laugh It may not be nice to fool Mother Nature, but it seems Mother Nature has no problem fooling with us. After another rather uneventful, mundane winter without much in the way of snow, or other meteorological catastrophes to make us cower in our condos and leave TV weather presenters breathless, signs of spring have been slowly emerging. A few crocuses here, some budding blossoms there, the odd robin hopping on the greening grass listening for worms. And while we’ve yet to enjoy an abundance of afternoons with warm sunshine that bring out short sleeves and smiles all around, as the calendar flips to March, we’re hopeful that we’ll soon be able to put out the patio furniture and clean the grime off the barbeque. So what’s with the snow flurries and frosty temperatures of recent forecasts? We may be ready for spring, but Mother Nature has other ideas—just ask farmers in Ladner and Tsawwassen in September. In fact, that old weather sage The Farmer’s Almanac warned us this would happen. It’s predicting a March that will be a degree colder than average with the “S” word in its forecast through the month’s first week. We’ll finally get the other “S” word— sunny—later in the month. Not that experiencing winter when we should be enjoying the first glow of spring is that unusual in these parts. On April 19, 2008, 2.5 cm of snow fell at Vancouver International Airport, the latest ever on record. But we got off lightly compared to Nanaimo, which was buried by 24 cm of the white stuff. So as we continue to pull on our winter coats, fleecy gloves and warm hats, we must warm to the idea that there’s not much we can do but grin and bear it. The first official day of spring is less than three weeks away. In the meantime, Mother Nature always gets the last laugh. —New Westminster News Leader

Project Bloom 2012

Inspiring event Project Bloom celebrates a fourth year of showcasing the achievements of women
S
pring seems like it is just around the corner, and with its sense of renewal, what better way to celebrate International Women's Day than with the South Delta Leader's annual Project Bloom event. Women from diverse backgrounds from across the community will be gathering March 8 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn to share their experiences and listen to a dynamic list of speakers. Plus, the fourth annual event will help raise funds for KidSport Delta, a non-profit organization that provides grant funding to children aged 18 and under so they can participate in local, organized sports. Delta's chapter just recently had its official launch to achieve that very worthwhile endeavour. The list of speakers at Project Bloom in 2012 features Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic, hosts of the popular TV series The Shopping Bags. The former television news reporters—who are featured in this edition's cover story—decided in 1999 to branch out on their own and develop a series of programs that harnessed their broadcast talents and curious natures as news reporters. They will share how they accom-
plished the feat to become two recognizable and loved personalities in the realm of consumer TV programming. Canadian Olympic swimmer Annamay Pierse, who is also an ambassador for KidSport, will talk about the challenges she endured to become a record-setting athlete. Her story is on page 16 of this edition. Vancouver obesity specialist Dr. Ali Zentner will discuss her own journey to better health and how society should be treating obesity as a disease, rather than with doses of needless guilt. See her story on page 19. And on page 14, Project Bloom emcee Margo Bates shares her love of the written word and how her grandmother inspired her to become an author. South Delta Leader publisher, Mary Kemmis, said Project Bloom is an event that has captured the momentum of an enterprising community of women in Delta who value making connections and friendships. "In four short years Project Bloom has grown from a small gathering to one of the mustattend events of the year," Kemmis said. "We're very proud to be able to bring so many interesting

women together to celebrate International Women's Day and to support a great cause." In the pages following the stories featuring this year's Project Bloom speakers, you will find many of them telling their own stories about the positive contributions they have made to the community,
either through their business lives, or volunteerism in the Women in Business feature section. As in past years, Project Bloom has been strongly embraced by the community and tickets for the event have sold out. Look for the March 16, 2012 edition of the South Delta Leader to see
some of the highlights of what is sure to be an inspiring way to celebrate International Women's Day. Plus, there is always the opportunity of attending next year's event. So, be sure the mark March 8, 2013 on your calendar for another inspiring event.

Driven to succeed Project Bloom speakers Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic removed 'failure' from their vocabulary to create The Shopping Bags PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

hen you have a successful career in the competitive business of broadcast news, where do you take your next step to advance? If you happen to be Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic, you quit your job, pull up stakes and launch into a new genre of television. Oh, first you have to mentally erase the word "failure" from your vocabulary, because the idea is never to look back. If you think that sounds scary, chances are you'd have nods of agreement when discussing what it takes to change career streams. But the duo did just that, and for the better part of a decade they have become well known as The Shopping Bags. Those attending the fourth annual Project Bloom event on March 8 will get the opportunity to hear them speak about their journey from TV news to the then-emerging realm of lifestyle programming. Hosted by the South Delta Leader at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, the Project Bloom gathering celebrates International Women's Day and raises funds for KidSport Delta which provides grants to children under the age of 18 to play organized sports.
Former broadcast news journalists Anna Wallner (left) and Kristina Matisic opted for the world of consumer-driven television and developed a concept that has seen them build on their Shopping Bags brand. Contributed photo
News the attraction Wallner, 42, said she had originally chosen journalism because she was a news junkie and wanted to be "close to the action." "I was on the debating team in high school in Don Mills, Ontario—I think many people would not be surprised to hear that," she says in a telephone conference call with the Leader. "So, that was probably my first foray into issue analysis and looking into
various angles and deciding how I felt about various issues. But it wasn't again until I did my undergrad degree in political science I really started thinking about it in terms of a career." For Matisic, 43, the lure of news reporting was similar. "Yes, I was interested in news, but I was also interested in television production in general," she says. "I was more interested in the lifestyle and entertainment reporting when I started, and it was a good way into the television
‘There were a lot of naysayers out there saying you two have established careers in journalism. Why are you leaving all that?’ — Kristina Matisic business. "I think I wrote the odd article for the school newspaper (Prince of Wales Secondary), but it wasn't until university when I was getting my masters degree that I took part in a school news program that was half an hour that we put on. That's when I really caught the bug." The two met at Global News, became friends and began to realise they had ambitions beyond the newsroom setting. "We had spent some time in the news business together and just through talking and discussing our larger life goals we wanted to get into business for ourselves, and marry things that we were passionate about like research, product-testing. That's how we hatched the idea for the Shopping Bags," Matisic said. "We
thought, we can do this ourselves. How hard can it be? But if I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn't have gone down that road." "It was a case of not knowing what we didn't know," Wallner added. "And both of us have very strong desires to succeed in general. And I think we made a decision very early on not to fail, and you know, the act of making that decision was a big part of, I think, getting our first show on the air." Matisic added the pair were also driven by the fact people around them couldn't quite come to grips with their decision to leave broadcast news behind them. For a start, they were both award winners. Each was named Broadcaster of Tomorrow by the B.C. Broadcasters Association—in 1997 for Matisic and 1999 for Wallner. Wallner was also nominated for a prestigious Webster Award for work as a health reporter. Skeptics abounded "There were a lot of naysayers out there saying you two have established careers in journalism that are not easy to come by. Why are you leaving all that?" Matisic said. "Lifestyle television? That was the term back then. You're crazy to head out on your own. And so I think we wanted to prove those people wrong. That always drives us. We really believed in our concept and ourselves, and as Anna said, failure was not an option." It was quite a leap of faith in themselves, and each other. But they felt they were a good match. "It's great to be working with somebody who you work so well with because it keeps both of you in check all along the way," Matisic said. They definitely had the determination to make it work. And

South Delta Leader Friday, March 2, 2012 they had conviction in the route they had mapped out for the show. "We really did believe in the concept," Wallner said. "We did a lot of research. There weren't a lot of shows about shopping. The only thing that was out there was Consumer Reports. And we wanted to put a more fun twist while shopping. And it hadn't really been done before. That's what we focused on and that's what we were determined to sell." The show's development and selling it to a willing broadcaster took time. "The concept came pretty fast. It was getting it on the air that took time. Probably from the very beginning when we were talking about having our own show to getting on the air was three years." Fortunately, they started the ground work for The Shopping Bags while still employed at Global. "Halfway through—we didn't quit right away," Matisic said. "But all the time we thought that if we're gonna make this work we have to give it our all. It really was a sink or swim situation that I think drove us even harder. It was like, we can't go back now with our tails between our legs. So gotta make this work, somehow." Part of that was learning not to take "no" for an answer, Wallner said. And their persistence paid off and The Shopping Bags made it

to TV—their shows air on W Network and OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network)—giving the two the chance to combine what they enjoy doing the most, doing research and shopping. " I l ov e s h o p p i n g , i t j u s t depends on what we're shop-

ping for," Matisic said, adding she's endured pitfalls commonly encountered by most consumers, such as not getting the right product for the job, or being saddled with those that lack the quality they advertise. That's one of the main reasons they devised the concept of the Shopping Bags and other shows that have branched off from their original idea. "There is a consumer element running through all of them. One is a spin-off from another," Wall-

ner said. "The Shopping Bags was the first show. Grocery Bags came next, which is essentially a kitchen products, food and cookbooktesting show. Then came Anna and Kristina's Beauty Call which has a makeover element, but is also a shopping and consumer show." What is changing now, as they enter a second decade on air, is that each new incarnation becomes more and more about them, their personalities and relationship. It's something the two are comfortable with—because after all they have endured the crucible of having to cook for some of the best chefs in the business when filming Anna and Kristina's Grocery Bag. So, who's the better cook after three seasons of shows. "Definitely Anna," Kristina said without hesitation. "She always says that," Wallner replied "It's true. She actually always enjoys it and does it (cooking) all the time," Matisic countered "I only do it because I love it," Wallner added. "Every chef we have come across, while they all have cookbooks and very specific recipes with very specific instructions, they always say, kind of like, 'put yourself into it,'" Matisic said. And judging by the success of their Anna and Kristina brand, the two are doing alright. editor@southdeltaleader.com

Firstly there is the issue of keeping up service expectations with previously satisfied customers and reassuring them that they will still be receiving the same excellent product and service they’ve become accustomed to while at the same time reaching out to not-so-happy previous customers and informing them that the business is now under new management – and that’s a good thing! It’s a fine balancing act and one that requires you to be in close contact with all your customers and maintaining open lines of communication. After all – the business of flowers is all about communicating! Don't Tell Your Mother refers to the way her grandmother would end her letters if the correspondence contained sensitive subject matter. This book, along with the soon-to-be published The Queen of a Gated Community and the in-progress The Funeral Follower, are inspired by real-life events Bates experienced growing up in Northern B.C. All her books also incorporate humour—a quality Bates has possessed since she was a young girl. "I never got kicked out of class for being naughty," she recalls. "But I did get kicked out for making the other kids laugh." Currently a White Rock resident, Bates explains that she does not write comedy. Her books contain no jokes or one-liners. In fact, the subject matter can be dark at times, delving into themes of death, war and prejudice. But the author manages to find humour in her characters' actions and reactions. Bates is one of the few female humourists in Canada. But she doesn't see the fuss in being a funny woman. "I've been touted a female humourist more times
than I've been touted a humourist," Bates says, adding she's certainly never heard anyone labelled a "male humourist." She chooses to refer to herself simply as a humourist "and the fact my name is Margo Bates is immaterial." In addition to her novels, Bates is also compiling a cook book called Good Cookin' at Marge's Diner ... hundreds served! It will feature "down home" cooking with a bit of French and Asian flair, she says. Readers can try out recipes such as "Don't beef about this meatloaf" and other Northern favourites inspired by the restaurants her family used to own. Today, Bates continues to run her public relations firm Margo Bates Publicity which, over the years, has allowed her to promote a number of high-profile projects such as the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival and closing of Burnaby's notorious Oakalla Prison. —Christine Lyon

CAPTIN employs numerous engineers, including Dominic Au. Dominic obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science (Materials Engineering) at the University of British Columbia, and went on to complete her Master of Applied Science (Materials Engineering), also at UBC. Her Masters Thesis focused on ‘Thermal-Stress Analysis of Defect Formation in Fused-Cast Alumina Refractories’. Dominic joined CAPTIN in February 2003 as a Production Engineer, where her first two years encompassed two main roles: computer modeling of the casting process to assist in die design and supporting the current casting production for quality improvements. In September 2005, CAPTIN underwent internal organization structure change, and Dominic saw her role change to Product
Development Engineer. This change allowed her group to concentrate on developing new wheel models that meet the required customer specifications, and to establish a system to introduce new wheels for mass production, such that the quality of the product is guaranteed.
Project Bloom, Women in Business is an annual event that celebrates International Woman’s Day, which strengthens the network of business women in Tsawwassen. Thanks to our members, we can support events like this that bring people together and make our community a better place to be.
In July 2006, Dominic was promoted to Senior Engineer of Product Development Engineering, taking leadership in die design activities. Then in early 2009, her work scope expanded to take on a project management role. Dominic was promoted to Supervisor of Die Maintenance in March 2011, and in September expanded to also supervise the die making group. Currently, she oversees a team of 34 employees at CAPTIN. Dominic’s dedication to CAPTIN, and her role, is evident in every way. She describes her job as ‘very challenging, and entails ensuring the quality and performance of all dies meet company and customer objectives in a safe and cost effective manner.’

The journey of life is not a smooth path. Many times, there are rocky sections, bumps in the road, detours or even imposing mountains along the way. One thing is clear: the journey is easier when we are not alone. It may be hard to reach out for help, living in a culture that values independence, but it is the strong and wise thing to do in facing life’s difďŹ culties. If your path is becoming overwhelming, solitary or even merely tedious, then consider seeking support and guidance for your travels. We are not meant to journey through life alone.

Bikram Yoga
Bikram Yoga Jodi Stokes Dickinson Studio Director Bikram Yoga South Delta opened October 1, 2010 in sunny Tsawwassen. Jodi is thrilled about the growth of the studio and is excited to contribute to the evolution of yoga in the community of South Delta. Jodi was introduced to Bikram Yoga over 11 years ago and knew, after her first class, this method of yoga was what had been missing from her fitness regimen. Always very active, Bikram Yoga provided the vigorous workout that she loved while healing old sports injuries and improving her mind-body connection. Jodi continued to practice Bikram Yoga regularly while attending the Corporate Finance program at BCIT. After graduation, and a few years working in the financial sector, Jodi decided that she was ready to leave the corporate world to pursue her passion. She attended the intense teacher
training course with Bikram Choudhury in 2005 and has been teaching all over the lower mainland for the past 5 years. “The studio is my second home. I strive to create an environment that is welcoming, conducive to personal growth and a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of busy daily life. My karma yoga, or life’s work, is to share this amazing yoga series with as many people in the community as I can. Bikram Yoga has never felt like a job to me; it’s an honour and a pleasure to be able to improve the quality of life for our clients.” “What motivates and inspires me are the success stories and testimonials we receive daily. In just over four months of attending classes, students are experiencing less back pain, improved energy levels, increased lean muscle mass and weight loss.”
One client suffers from an over-active thyroid and was diagnosed with Graves disease six years ago. Her resting heart rate was 140 beats per minute and doctors told her she was a walking heart attack. She could not keep weight on and lost thirty pounds; she was 90 pounds at 5’9”. Doctors told her she had to drink radioactive iodine to kill her thyroid. She did that (six years ago), and now struggles to correct her metabolism/thyroid level. In January of this year, she returned to the endocrinologist and was told that her blood levels, for the first time in years, were almost normal. He asked what she had been doing differently and the only change was that she had started practicing Bikram Yoga in November 2010. She now glows with happiness and health; she has found the tool to help her beat this condition!

Bikram Yoga is a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises practiced in a heated room. It is specifically designed to work the entire body, using heat to stretch deeper, prevent injury and flush unwanted toxins. This yoga series stimulates the organs, glands and nerves and systematically moves fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of the body, restoring health to all systems. Benefits of a regular practice include weight loss, improved muscle tone, stress relief, increased energy and an overall sense of physical and mental well-being. The Bikram series is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Be prepared to sweat and have fun. We hope to see you on the mat soon! – Jodi Stokes Dickinson

Project Bloom 2012
RunInn
Obesity specialist Dr. Ali Zentner will be talking about her personal journey to healthier living at this year's Project Bloom event on March 8. Contributed photo
From P19 Place that group in today’s world of plenty and reduced physical activity—somewhere we were not made to inhabit—and there should be no surprise society, in general, has a problem with weight gain. “Yes, environment plays a huge role in why we’ve come upon this,” Zentner said, “where half the country is overweight or obese. But when you’re talking about a disease, and this is what it is, you’re talking about a species that has a genetic predisposition and has then encountered an environment that has very much allowed it to be convenient to turn on whatever genes it’s faced with.” Zentner said humans were designed to run down food, not waddle to the driveway, hop in the SUV and head for the line up stretching outside the nearest fast food drive-thru. “Just from an activity level, we’re more sedentary now than we ever have been before,” she said. “And the portion sizes, they have doubled in the last two decades. And the types of foods, we’re eating more high sugar, high fat and sodium foods than what we were made to eat.” Essentially, there’s a big disconnect between the animal humans
were made to be and the environment we have put ourselves in, Zentner said. And that is enough to banish guilt from the discussion on obesity. “I think guilt is a useless emotion,” she said, “especially when it comes to making healthy changes. What I try and do with people every day is get them to feel proactive and positive.” B u t i s n’t s o c i e t y conditioned to make overweight people feel guilty? “Yes, we are. But as you can see, that’s not helping,” Zentner said. “When I talk about obesity being a disease, I often get reaction from, interestingly, the media, that these people should do something about their weight.” Zentner said that’s not a very productive way of looking at the situation. So, how does society get on a healthier path in a positive manner and drop some pounds and get healthier? “I don’t know if we can shift the situation entirely,” she said. “Let’s be honest, unless we dramatically restructure our cultural approach to food, our entire infrastructure in terms of how our cities are built, we’re not going to see a huge so-called cure for this.” While that may be

the case for the masses, there is hope for the individual. But that requires acknowledgment from government that obesity is a disease, she said. Then, treatment options for the condition can be entertained. “Our cultural approach to food and the entire food industry has to change,” Zentner said, “and our approach to infrastructure, how cities are built and how we get from one place to another also has to change.” While she doesn’t see that all happening anytime soon, Zentner said individuals can make some small changes in their everyday lives that will allow a return to healthier living. “Human beings on a one-on-one basis can look at what they are doing in their lives and see where they can make a small impact,” she said. It’s a course of action Zentner herself undertook as she began to slowly change her life, starting with just 10 minutes of exercise a day. That grew to increasingly longer sessions to the point where she even gave up her car and began cycling to work. Zenter said she will be sharing more of her personal journey to a healthier lifestyle at the Project Bloom event. —Philip Raphael Diane Askin and her team at NetClimber Web Design Inc. have successfully built their business into one of the most recognized web development companies in the area. Back Row: left to right Alex Bradshaw, Rebecca Tait Seated: Nancy Friesen, Kate Libonati Nancy Friesen has been the co-owner of the RunInn Delta since the store opened almost nine years ago. Having a passion for running and wanting a job after staying at home to raise her three boys, it felt meant-to-be when Kevin Ridley approached her with the idea of helping him to open a running store in Tsawwassen. It was an immediate “I’m in” from Nancy. Kate Libonati joined the team a year later. She was a student at SDSS at the time. Now, she is just a couple of months from getting her business degree from Kwantlen. Retiring from the RunInn in May, Nancy reflects on what her time at the store has meant to her. “I have loved my job as the apparel buyer for the RunInn. It is so challenging to look at the clothing lines a year in advance and try to figure out what will be the wave of the future. Relationships formed with
my reps, fitting and feedback from customers, bonding with clinic members through running, getting people into the proper running shoes-it’s all been good.” Social media has given Kate a whole new aspect to her job in the past year. She keeps our customers updated through our website, newsletter, Facebook and Twitter. Check out our latest “shop now” feature on Facebook. Customer service remains number one at the RunInn. That, plus community involvement have remained strong goals. Upcoming events include our St. Paddy’s Day fun run, April 14th, our second annual fashion show fundraiser with proceeds to the Delta Hospice, and sponsorship and volunteering at the Delta Triathlon on April 21st. Tuesday night clinics are ongoing throughout the year. We meet at the store every Tuesday night at 6:30pm. Our next clinic starts on April 3rd.

Tsawwassen Special Olympian Cory Duhaime to compete in alpine events PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR
Tsawwassen's Cory Duhaime, 23, is craving the speed of the slopes and hopefully a series of podium finishes this week. "I love the sensation of speed," said the B.C. Special Olympics athlete just prior to boarding a flight at Vancouver International Airport early Monday morning (Feb. 27) for the 2012 National Winter Games (Feb. 28-March 3) in St. Albert, Alberta. "I love skiing fast. I get this very excited feeling." Duhaime, one of three Delta Special Olympics athletes heading to the games, is hoping to build on the three gold medals he won in the alpine skiing events at the 2011 Special Olympics B.C.Winter Sport Championships. If Duhaime succeeds it will be a fitting reward for the intense training he has undertaken. He figures he's been on the slopes 61 times in the 2010-11 season—the time split between Cypress and Whistler Mountains. "I've been training very hard," said Duhaime, who is a seasoned Special Olympics competitor. In 2010 he returned from the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario with two gold medals in five-pin bowling. But it's the slopes he enjoys most. Duhaime started skiing in Grade 7 while attending Beach Grove Elementary, really liked the sport, joined Special Olympics a year later, and said he's thrilled to be part of the B.C. team. "I am very proud. It's
quite an honour." While at Jasper’s Marmot Basin ski resort this week Duhaime, who works as a service clerk at the Tsawwassen Safeway, will be competing in the super-G, giant slalom, and slalom. "I like giant slalom the best because it's not as 'turny' as slalom and not quite as fast as super G," he said. "I also like to challenge other people as well, when I get the opportunity."

Access to transportation key when choosing a new home
Transit ‘a really vital link’ in our lives How much is convenient transportation worth? It might be a cop-out to say “it depends, but that’s how it is. Sometimes it can add to the cost of a home, but in other cases it can actually save you some cash. Take Forge Properties’ Keystone townhome development in South Surrey. Forge spokesman Cory Saran says lots of buyers are coming in from Vancouver and Richmond because it’s close enough to Highway 99 that residents can hop on the freeway and get going within minutes. And with homes starting at $445,000, he says commuters can save a bundle compared to living in a similar, 1,800 square-foot townhome downtown. “To buy a townhome with this squarefootage in Vancouver is a million-plus, he
says. Saran says the proximity to the 99 is huge for Keystone buyers. From the development, you can get to Langley in 20 minutes and downtown Vancouver in about 30 if you’re lucky, he says. It’’s the same for developments near public transit. WestStone Properties’ 40-storey condo tower Ultra – part of the Urban Village project in Surrey’s City Centre – is a three-minute walk to the SkyTrain. Bob Dominick, vicepresident of sales and marketing at WestStone, says this proximity to transit has been a huge draw for SFU students in particular, but also commuters who get to work without a car. “Many of our residents look at it as access to entertainment, Dominick says. “I think it’s a really vital link in our lives.
Going for the gold
Celebrating the best of B.C. at the Georgies by Kerry Vital
In the grand tradition of awards season, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia joined in the fun with their annual Georgie Awards, held on Feb. 25 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. This year was the 20th anniversary of the awards, which recognize excellence in residential home construction, renovation, design, development, and sales and marketing. “From Whistler to the Lower Mainland to the Okanagan, the winners of this year’s Georgies are golden examples of what excellent residential construction is all about, says CHBA BC President Doug Wittal. “The winners – and indeed all the finalists
“
– have shown us that B.C. is truly at the forefront of the country when it comes to innovative design, quality construction and great customer service. Several familiar names in the industry were among the winners, including Adera Development Corporation for Best Innovative Feature and Best Townhouse Development for seven35 and Larco Investments Ltd. for Best Multi-Family Low Rise Development for their Morgan Crossing community. There were two big winners at this year’s awards. MAC Marketing Solutions was the recipient of six awards, including Marketing Campaign of the Year, Best Sales Centre and Best Project-Specific Website. They also
received a Special Platinum Award for winning 27 Georgies over the past seven years. Portrait Homes also won a Special Platinum Award for winning 27 Georgies in the past 11 years. This year the team won three other awards, for Large Volume Single Family Home Builder of the Year, Customer Choice Award – Single Family Home Builder
and Customer Choice Award – Multi Family Home Builder. This is the fourth year they’ve won the single family home award in the customer choice category, something that the company is very proud of as the winner of the award is selected by homeowners. To see a full list of winners and nominees, check out www. georgieawards.ca

Open Space Yoga and its clients to take part in Power of Movement fundraiser March 4 at Ladner Village studio This Sunday (March 4), Open Space Yoga will be joining thousands of Canadians as they take part in Power of Movement, Canada's largest yoga fundraiser. Funds raised from this event go towards life-changing research, which benefits more than 4.6 million Canadians living with arthritis and autoimmune conditions. Since its inception in 2005, Power of Movement has raised more than $1 million for critical arthritis research and engaged thousands of Canadians in a celebration of movement. Millions are impacted by arthritis
and autoimmune conditions. One in five adults and 50 per cent of those over 65 years of age in the USA have been diagnosed with some form of autoimmune disease: arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, fibromyalgia. "The South Delta yoga community has been incredibly generous by sponsoring our team," said Jes Von Henze, Power of Movement ambassador and Open Space team leader. "Most of us know somebody in our life that suffers from arthritis and other forms of autoimmune conditions. We are so looking

First-time homebuyers to get some answers 18th annual free seminar to help navigate the process of selecting a home With so many diverse factors to take into consideration when buying a new home, particularly in the Vancouver region, it is no surprise first-time home buyers need a little help de-mystifying the process. There are so many questions that need answers. What home type is best matched to wants, needs and financial resources? What location is preferable? W h a t a re t h e m o r t g a g e options? How does the provincial property transfer tax exemption for first-time home buyers work? What are the rules associated with B.C.’s newly announced $10,000 first-time new home buyers bonus? How much can be withdrawn tax-free from RRSPs? How about legal considerations, closing costs and home warranties? What’s involved with condo pre-sales? Those and other key questions will be covered by a panel of experts at the 18th Annual Seminar for First-time Home Buyers, presented by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’
Association (GVHBA) on April 3 from 7-9 p.m. in the Bell Performing Arts Centre (6250 144 St., Surrey). Admission to the popular seminar is free thanks to the generosity of the presenting sponsor, the provincial Homeowner Protection Office, branch of BC Housing; patron sponsor RBC Royal Bank; and corporate sponsors Canada Mortgage & Housing Corp., Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, Genworth Financial Canada, National Home Warranty, CKNW, 99.3 The Fox, AM730 and Classic Rock 101. Speakers are Robyn Adamache, senior market analyst, Canada Mortgage & Housing Corp.; Wendy Acheson, vice president and registrar, Homeowner Protection Office, branch of BC Housing; Narrinder Dhanoya-Bhangu, vice president, Pacific region, Genworth Financial Canada; Inde Sumal, vice-president of residential mortgages, BC region, RBC Royal Bank; Eugen Klein, president, Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver; Tom Reeves, assistant vice-president, Nation-
al Home Warranty; and Aaron Lightman, associate, Farris & Company LLP. Seminar moderator is Shayne Ramsay, chief executive officer of BC Housing. “Our experts will help firsttime buyers consider all available options and important issues before they take that critical first step onto the property ladder,” said GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson. “Real estate continues to be a hot topic in this region, so seminar attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended last year’s event.” Doors open at 6 p.m., allowing attendees ample time to view builder displays and other home-related products and services. Pre-registration is required. Register online at www.gvhba. org or call 778-565-4288 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Registrations will also be accepted via voicemail during evenings and weekends. Although the seminar is free, attendees are asked to bring a food item for the Surrey Food Bank.
Ladner fashion store to host special clothing drive South Coast Casuals to help support Dress for Success organization South Coast Casuals in Ladner Village is encouraging their clients to scour their closets to help with a clothing drive on March 10 for disadvantaged women entering the workforce. Called the Tr ibal Spring Blossom Event, it will benefit Dress for Success Vancouver, which, according to its website promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Donations of gently worn women’s clothing, purses and shoes that are suitable for job interviews and work environments are being sought. "We really like the idea that this event will go towards empowering women and helping them move forward," said South Coast Casuals' Jill McKnight, who
had a chance to tour the Dress of Success Vancouver facility last week and which includes a clothing side as well as a computer lab that offers free training courses in business-focused applications. "This is an organization that has a lot of exposure in the DowntownVancouver community, but as I am talking to people in the store here,
a lot them are unfamil iar with it but think it's a great idea," she added. Donors will receive a thank you gift from South Coast Casuals and be entered in a draw fo a $200 Tribal Sportswea gift certificate with a pri vate shopping experi ence. South Coast Casuals is located at 5028 48th Ave For more information call 604-946-8590.
