Get the buzz on bees this week Workshop highlights importance of pollination in the West Kootenay BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

A flowering issue has the West Kootenay a buzz. On Thursday a free workshop on why native pollinators are important to our lifestyle in the West Kootenay, and how we can encourage them through better ecology, will be offered at Selkirk College in the Muriel Griffiths Room. Hosted by Rossland REAL Food, native bee specialist and entomologist Lynn Westcott will be speaking in Trail (Thursday, March 8, 7 p.m.) and in Rossland (April 12) about a species that affects us at a core level. Bees perform one of the

most vital aspects in the creation of a healthy local food system, said Westcott. They are critical to pollination, and pollination is necessary for flowering plants to produce, whether that be fruit or propagation. “Bees have co-evolved with a lot of the flowering plants,” she said. “Pollen provides the primary food source for the next generation of developing bees. And as they fly from flower to flower they transfer pollen from plant to plant which allows the plants to reproduce.” A lot of the fruit plants we derive our food from in the West Kootenay are flowering plants, said Westcott, and they require animal pollinators in order for them to reproduce, to produce seed and to produce food. “And the majority of animal pollinators are insect, and

those are mainly bees,” she said. There are no hard numbers about a percentage of decline in bee populations in the West Kootenay, but all over the world their descent is an issue. Westcott said the factors that play into these global reductions — from habitat loss or habitat changes, to pesticide use, to parasites and diseases — are the same here. In the West Kootenay, many of the 450 species of native bees actually nest in the ground. “So anything that disturbs the soil disturbs the native habitat for these bees,” she said. Honeybees, however, are not a native species. They were introduced from overseas when Europeans first came over to North America. Thursday’s presentation, supported by Communities in

Bloom, will include an overview of plant pollination and why it is important, both in a local food production perspective but also for a healthy ecology perspective. People will be introduced to the various groups of native bees in the Boundary West Kootenay region, as well as learning simple ways to provide habitat for native bees in a yard or in the garden through pollinator friendly flowering plants. The last part of the evening will be spent showing people how simple it is to construct some habitat for bees. Only Trail registrants for the Thursday workshop go to Selkirk College. In Rossland, contact Hanne Smith (250362-7767) to register for the workshop in April. Two field sessions are planned in early June in Trail and Rossland.

A youth centre and programs to fill it are on the radar of a newly formed Youth Advisory Council for the Beaver Valley. The fledgling council arose out of a Columbia Basin Trust (CBT)-sponsored forum in mid-February in Fruitvale. Over 60 people showed up for the forum, with a healthy contingent of youth in attendance (as required by the CBT). Columbia Youth Community Development Centre (YCDC) coordinator Morgan-River Jones, who helped facilitate the forum, said the key issues of space — call it a youth centre — for youth where they could hang out and have programs running from, and an increase in youthoriented programming, were paramount. The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will now investigate the opportunity to have different kinds of services and events delivered in the Beaver Valley itself. The committee will also be tasked to draw in more youth from the Beaver Valley. “And when they really represent the youth voice they will move forward and try to make some of these priorities happen,” said Jones. Fruitvale, Area A and Montrose’s needs differ from Trail, even though the two regions are close together, said Jones. “A lot of times youth from the Beaver Valley have trouble accessing services because public transportation isn’t so (manageable),” she said. “They feel there needs to be more programming, or enhanced programming, in the community but that has to come from the youth themselves.”

Trail’s push for a skateboard park has one Trail resident questioning the city’s priorities. Bryan Deferro asked city council why it was even considering the creation of a skate park when it’s not running its existing facilities at full capacity. “Is it good business to even think about doing a skateboard park for several hundred thousands of dollars when the aquatic centre doesn’t meet the needs of some people?” he asked in council chambers last week.

MS Society’s Kootenay coordinator visits Trail on Thursday TRAIL – Lonnie Facchina, community services coordinator for the MS Society of Canada’s West Kootenay Chapter will be in town on Thursday to host a meeting for anyone who has an interest in multiple sclerosis and is looking for a support group experience. Support or self-help groups are informal gettogethers of two or more people who can share helpful tips, information, resources and experiences. The initial meeting will be to establish need, location, time and style of group(s). Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40, we know that it affects children, some as young as two years old. The impact is felt by family, friends and by the community. MS is unpredictable, affecting vision, hearing, memory, balance and mobility. Its effects are physical, emotional, financial, and last a lifetime. There is no cure. It may be difficult at times to talk about MS related symptoms with family and friends who may not grasp what it is like – but it can be very helpful talking to other people who share, or have shared, similar experiences. Self-help and support groups are not limited to people lwith MS. Anyone who has MS, is a caregiver for someone with MS, a family member, or is newly diagnosed is invited to attend the organizing meeting at Rose Wood Village at 8125 Devito Drive (behind the Waneta Plaza mall) in the Games Room at 10:30 am on Thursday. Council backs project aimed for youth FROM PAGE 1 Deferro pointed to a group of senior advocates approaching the city’s recreation committee in 2010, requesting the pool open up at 6 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays as it currently opens at noon. The city then could not commit to paying the $23,000 it would cost to stretch the hours back after pooloperating hours were reduced in 2009 with the demise of regional funding for recreation. “The young people just haven’t had as much say as the seniors and we feel that a skateboard park in the City of Trail is needed,” argued councillor Eleanor Gattafoni Robinson.

But Deferro, who ran for council in last year’s election, continued to drill members on the city’s intentions to build a skate park, which is free to use, while parents are forking over big dough for their kids to play hockey and baseball at city facilities. Trail administrator David Perehudoff reminded council that the creation of such a park would be a one-time capital cost with a minimal upkeep fee of about $25,000 per year. This doesn’t compare to the annual operating deficit for the Trail Memorial Centre budgeted at just under $945,000, not including maintenance costs. Trail has applied for a Community

Recreation Grant, funding that could support up to 80 per cent of such a project, while the Columbia Youth Community Development Centre seeks additional money out. The city has not included the park in its budget this year but if it does get the recreation grant, to be announced by the end of March, Trail will likely look at construction next year, according to Perehudoff. The concrete park proposed at a site across from the Piazza Colombo in the Gulch is estimated to cost about $450,000, not including the work involved in building other elements (a viewing area, green space, washroom facility, children’s playground and pathway connections)

Considered an “urban wheel park,” the 8,000-square-foot recreational facility on Rossland Avenue will be open to skateboarders, roller skaters, inline skaters, scooter riders and BMX bike riders. “If you look at our population – we have an aging population and declining youth,” added councillor Kevin Jolly. “From a sustainability perspective, we have to ensure we have young people coming and staying here and raising their families here and the way you do that is you have attractions that suit young families and that’s not just aquatic and leisure centres.”

School District 20 (Kootenay Columbia) board of trustees will be receiving presentations from its two unions — including the teachers and CUPE — and the District

Parents Advisory Council. Presentations are based on what they perceive as being the future of education as they see it in the district. SD20 chair Darrel Ganzert said they will also be going public at the meeting with possible budget cuts. “The management team presented us with enough areas that we can cut and possibly charge fees for,” he said, to make up the shortfall from the province.

Failed regulator linked to leak THE WILLIAMS LAKE TRIBUNE A failed vacuum regulator is believed to have caused the chlorine gas release at the Sam Ketcham Pool Feb. 26, says the City of Williams Lake. The failed regulator, according to preliminary investigations, allowed chlorine gas to fill water delivery pipes and the filter system. The gas release resulted in 70 people being treated for exposure to the chlorine gas at Cariboo Memorial Hospital. Most were treated and released quickly, while one eight-yearold boy was kept in hospital

until last Friday. On the morning of the swim meet when the wading pool was being filled with water, gas that had built up in the pipes and filters was pushed by water into the wading pool. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the mechanical failure. Based on the results of this preliminary investigation, city staff will consult with Interior Health as the regulator of public swimming pools in the province and will be exploring what options are available to sanitize the water in the short term and

the long term. In the meantime, the main pool, wading pool and hot tub will remain closed to the public. The city would like to stress that while the main pool tank and underground water piping have been problematic, it is in no way related to this incident. The chlorine gas release occurred during a Blue Fins swim meet, which hosted a team from Quesnel and a team from Prince George. Complex staff, who are trained in how to respond to emergencies, evacuated the pool area and the entire Complex.

VICTORIA – Unless teachers violate a Labour Relations Board ruling and extend their strike beyond Wednesday, the debate on legislation putting an end to their withdrawal of service could stretch into next week before becoming law, B.C. Liberal house leader Rich Coleman said Monday. In weekend interviews, B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert wouldn’t rule out teachers staying off the job beyond three consecutive days this week granted by the LRB ruling on essential services. The LRB ruling also allows for one day off the job in following weeks, but some B.C. school districts begin spring break the week of March 12. Coleman said as long as the teachers’ union follows the LRB ruling, he sees no reason to accelerate passage of Bill 22, which carries the threat of heavy fines for further strike action by teachers once it is passed. NDP house leader John Horgan said opposition MLAs will hold up passage of Bill 22, which would extend the current BCTF contract terms and permit the appointment of a mediator in the year-long dispute. NDP MLAs expect to speak for the maximum 17 hours they are permitted, which would likely extend the debate into next week.

Education Minister George Abbott said the three-day strike allows teachers to “vent” their hostility toward the government before returning to classrooms. Abbott says Bill 22 is complex, and it deserves a full debate. The legislation changes the rules for hiring teachers as well as dealing with class size and special needs support. If the government had staged an emergency debate to push the bill through this past weekend, it could have inflamed tensions further and triggered an illegal strike, Abbott said. The B.C. Federation of Labour announced plans on the weekend for a march of union members to the B.C. legislature on Tuesday. “Bill 22 impacts all workers,” said B.C. Fed president Jim Sinclair. “When the right to free collective bargaining is under attack, all unions will stand together to defend that right.” The BCTF has refused to accept the two-year “net zero” wage mandate that has been accepted by most other public sector unions. That includes public school support staff, whose members have ratified agreements in 24 school districts. The most recent ratifications were in Rocky Mountain, Arrow Lakes, New Westminster, Burnaby and Gulf Islands districts, where employees agreed to accept no raise.

“The RCMP are warning private sellers to have their financial institutions verify money orders,” said Gord Molendyk, Vernon RCMP spokesperson. In one case, an allterrain vehicle was purchased in Westwold. It’s not known how the suspect was able to access bank orders. It’s believed the name the suspect is using was obtained through identity fraud. “The real victim is being victimized again,” said Molendyk, adding that fraud artists are always looking for ways to obtain personal information for crime. “People have to be careful about giving information out.” The suspect is described as a Caucasian woman, in her mid-30s, five-feet-tall and about 150 pounds. She has long brown hair. If anyone has information on this crime, they are asked to call their local RCMP detachment.

Canada closes embassy in Syria THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - Canada has withdrawn its remaining diplomats from Syria and closed the embassy in Damascus. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said the deteriorating security situation forced the pullout. “Canada has maintained its diplomatic presence in Syria - despite the risks - to monitor developments on the ground and to deliver tough and frank messages to the Syrian authorities,� Baird said in a statement. “These messages will continue to be delivered directly through the Syrian embassy here in Ottawa and through our other international forums.� Canada has been urging Canadians to leave Syria for months. Any still remaining can still seek consular help through Beirut, Lebanon, or Amman, Jordan. The closure came as Baird also announced more sanctions against Syria, including a freeze on the assets of the country’s central bank and seven senior ministers in the government of Bashir Assad.

Teen acquitted in case of bullying boy who committed suicide THE CANADIAN PRESS OSHAWA, Ont. Family members of an 11-year-old boy who killed himself in a case that garnered widespread attention about bullying said Monday they were content despite the acquittal of a teen charged with robbing and assaulting him. In finding the 13-year-old accused not guilty, Justice Mary Teresa Devlin said she had doubts about the identity of Mitchell Wilson’s attacker. “I believe they followed the law right to the letter (and) I don’t

think Mitchell would’ve liked to have seen the law bent for his own benefit,� his father Craig Wilson said outside court. “For that reason, I think we walked out respectfully with our heads held high.� Mitchell, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, killed himself last September, after being subpoenaed to testify in the case. His family said he was terrified at the prospect of facing the youth accused of slamming his face into the sidewalk, chipping his teeth, and stealing his

iPhone in Pickering, Ont., in November 2010. Mitchell faced constant bullying, and the assault on top of his progressive musclewasting disease had plunged him into a downward spiral of despair, his family said. He died last Labour Day after wrapping a plastic bag over his head. The case drew the attention of Premier Dalton McGuinty, who cited it along with other similar high-profile cases, as reasons to implement tough antibullying legislation.

Last month, Devlin admitted oral and written statements as to the identity of his attacker that Mitchell had given his stepmother and police before his suicide. Craig Wilson said his son was certain he had accurately named his assailant, who cannot

THE CANADIAN PRESS REGINA - The Saskatchewan government says it will appeal a court ruling that found the province’s essential services law unconstitutional. Labour Minister Don Morgan, who is also attorney general, says the decision breaks new ground when it states that there is charter protection for the right to strike. He says that will have broader implications if the ruling is upheld and he wants the Court of Appeal to weigh in. The law says employers and unions have to agree on which workers are so needed they cannot walk off the job, but if they can’t agree, employers can dictate who is essential. A Court of Queen’s Bench justice ruled last month that the law goes too far because it infringes on the freedom of association of employees. But the justice upheld the principle of essential services and gave the government 12 months to fix the law.

The BCTF’s indoctrination of our kids

P

erhaps the single most ridiculous stunt in the leadup to this week’s teachers’ strike was pulled at an elementary school here in the capital. A teacher gave her Grade 1 class an assignment for anti-bullying day: take crayons in hand and write to Education Minister George Abbott, demanding he stop bullying their teacher and address class size and composition. This North Korea-style political indoctrination of six-year-olds was a mistake, according to the local teachers’ union boss, who vaguely indicated that the unnamed teacher would apologize to parents. Is this self-serving abuse of teacher authority an isolated incident? My experience as a parent and journalist suggests it is not, and recent events support that. By Friday, students across B.C. were skipping class in solidarity with their teachers, led by budding campus radicals

suddenly conversant with B.C. Teachers’ Federation talking points about “Bill 22.” This left-wing groupthink pervades the education system from public schools through taxpayersupported colleges and universities. After a couple of generations of this indoctrination, almost everyone “knows” that government under-funding is at the heart of every school problem, standardized testing is an assault on the fragile self-esteem of students, and reducing class size is the top priority for improving educational outcomes. All of this is glaringly false union propaganda, reinforced in classroom “current affairs” discussions. Don’t believe me? Google “Study: Class size doesn’t matter” for the latest on a growing stack of scientific evidence that shows you and your children are being force-fed lies. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president

FLETCHER B.C. Views Susan Lambert announced the strike on live TV with a remarkable string of rhetoric about the “Orwellian” legislation that will soon put an end to this teacher tantrum. The government needs to negotiate “clearly, rationally and respectfully,” said the boss of union representatives who have spent the last year insulting the taxpayers’ negotiators by telling them to “go back to your masters” and get a couple of billion more. Clearly? It was the BCTF that announced its work-torule plan for the fall and then took the summer off.

It was the BCTF that didn’t even present its outrageous 16-per-cent wage demand until January, a full 10 months after formal negotiations began, and accompanied it with a false costing. Orwellian? At a sparsely attended rally on the legislature lawn, local teachers’ unions marched out their most strident tame trustee to demand the government “come to the table” with billions. One teacher in the crowd held up a large sign adorned with three mug shots: Premier Christy Clark, ex-premier Gordon Campbell and Benito Mussolini, to illustrate a multiple-choice question about “fascism.” This teacher should be assigned to write an essay about the Italian dictator’s formative years, and his schooling in particular. In Vancouver, a protesting teacher got big media play, holding up a sign proclaiming that “it’s not about a wage increase, it’s about classroom condi-

tions.” This too is a lie. The BCTF trotted out its standard “children first” rhetoric, then tabled its breathtakingly out-oftouch benefit demands. It doesn’t take a math teacher to see what its $2 billion wage and benefit fantasy would actually do to classroom conditions. For his part, Abbott started out pretty keen about students and parents heading down to occupy their local school and replace striking teachers with volunteers for a couple of days. But he changed his tune after the support staff union started grumbling about parents colouring too close to their craft lines. One fight at a time, I guess. Teachers’ union offers its rationale The following is the rationale, as simply stated as possible, as to why teachers and anyone who cares enough about education is “Taking a Stand� across this province and at the BC Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. This government has pushed us too far and we are tired of having their “stick� being poked in our collective eye! We will be circulating this message on a printed “bill� at all of our leafleting sites during our work stoppage: Cynically titled, the Education “Improvement� Act, Bill 22 attacks fundamental teachers’ rights and paves the way for major contract stripping and union-busting. If enacted, the legislation will not allow for job action of any kind; salary increases (not even a cost of living allowance);

improvements to benefits; or, improvements to teacher preparation time. There will be no class size limits except at primary grades and no limits on the number of students with special needs in classrooms. Boards will no longer have a statutory obligation to explain why classes are over-crowded and/or inappropriately configured. The bill provides a $165-million remedy for 10 years and over $3 billion of damage done to education in BC by Bills 27 and 28. It will remove seniority rights for teachers who are transferred or laid off and due process provisions with respect to teacher evaluations or firings. It will not allow any meaningful mediation to occur. This government has no

respect for teachers, public education, workers’ rights, court findings or the “Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms� or “The Rule of Law�. The government’s action is irresponsible and reckless. It will result in untold harm to the public education system. It victimizes children. It is a callous and purely political move to advance a “draconian� (as the Supreme Court of Canada characterized it in a similar effort), Neo-liberal agenda. It is demoralizing teachers and those that care about our society. It must be stopped. We all need to Just Say “No� to “Bully� Bill 22! “Stripped again� but still standing up to the bully, Andrew M. ET nurse move raises questions We, the members of the West Kootenay Ostomy Support Group are concerned about the relocation of the ET (Enterstomal Therapist) nurse from the Trail Regional Hospital to the Castlegar Heath Center. We believe this decision by Interior Health, as usual, is very flawed and not in the best interest of the patients involved. Her workload even before being relocated to Castlegar was too much and now it will be even worse. I understand that this decision was based on putting the ET nurse in a central location, but how can this be central when all of the ostomy operations are performed in the Trail Hospital where the patient is required to see the ET nurse before the surgery and at least once after the surgery. Even when the ET nurse worked out of the hospital, it was difficult for her to consult with all the ostomy surgery patients before they were discharged. What will happen now when she only comes to Trail twice a week? Many patients will slip through the cracks and not get the information and help they

need to cope with their ostomy when they get home. Although our group is there for support, we are not able to give the hands on attention many new ostomy patients need from the ET nurse. It has also come to our attention that when the ET nurse does come into Trail twice a week, she is only there to see inpatients and is not set up to see any outpatients anymore. Would it not be possible to have a room set up in the hospital or the Wellness Center where she could see outpatients as she does in our communities? It is increasingly difficult to get an appointment with the ET nurse in Castlegar as she is spending so much time on the road now and therefore never in her office. All that time wasted on the road could be better used to see all the patients that need her help and guidance. The best solution if she had to be moved out of the hospital would have been relocating her in the Kiro Wellness Center. At least then, she would have been close to the hospital. We, as a group feel that the ET nurse is overworked and therefore

unable to do her job efficiently. We all miss her expertise and availability. Interior Health has been aware of our concerns for a couple of months now, and has yet to address the problem. An email was sent to them by another concerned group on Dec. 7, 2011 and then again by me on Feb. 4. Their latest response sent on Feb. 9, which was not sent to me, was that they have to wait for a response from the Community Integrated Health Service Administrator. We, (the West Kootenay Ostomy Support Group) have waited long enough. It is time for action! Why is that Interior Health can make a bad decision in a day, but will take several months, if ever, to correct it? Their motto must be “There is no reason for it. PEOPLE OBITUARIES FOYLE (NEE MELLOR), LEONA JANE — of Rossland, B.C. has gone to be with her Lord on March 3, 2012 in Trail, B.C. Her faith sustained her to the end. Born October 17, 1924 in the Kettle Valley, she was the seventh of ten children. It was here that she met her future husband Bob Foyle. He had seen her picture when he was overseas and said to her brother, “I’m going to marry that girl!” – and he did – in 1946. They moved to Rossland where they spent many happy years raising their five children. Mom loved her faith, family, home, dog Mindy, her gardens in Rossland and in Grand Forks where they moved when Dad retired; her Esling Park “family”, and her many trips to Chewelah. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Darlene (Allen) Davidoff, Sharon (Brian) Mauchline, Coleen (Gary) DeBiasio, Michael (Carol Ann) Foyle, David (Lunya) Foyle; grandchildren; Jeff (Shannon) Watson, Chris and Darren Watson, Alana (Craig) Kiselbach, Andrea (Warren) McDonald, Sean (Anita) Stevens, Jason and Ryan (Shelley) Stevens, Jen (Darren) Schleppe, Sarah and Chris Gunn(Jamie), Emma, Michaela and Laura Foyle, Leahland and Tamara Foyle; step-grandchildren: Amanda and Shawna Mauchline and Kalyeena Makortoff; great-grandchildren: Tyler and Tim Watson, Gregory Stevens, Ronan, Benen and Nyla Stevens, Hanna and Ava Schleppe, and Gage and Hanna Kiselbach. Hometown honours band with its own street THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois says he’s honoured that his hometown of Kingston, Ont., has decided to dedicate a street to the veteran group - even if there’s “some awkwardness” that comes along with it. Kingston’s city council voted last month to rename a portion of downtown Barrack St. as “Tragically Hip Way.” Langlois navigates the street as part of his regular routine, so the whole situation is a little strange for him. “I use that street quite often actually, it’s sort of a thoroughfare where I go pick up my kids. So you know, it’s certainly an honour and humbling,” Langlois said in a telephone interview Monday morning, noting that the Hip’s namesake street also marked the location of the city’s sparkling new arena, the K-Rock Centre. “It’s quite surreal, but yeah, I use the street all the time. I may even pull over sometimes.” Still, Langlois noted some “awkwardness within the community.” The decision to honour the 14-time Juno Award winners followed heated debate at the municipal level, with some arguing that the city should pay tribute to its military history rather than a beloved rock band. And while Langlois didn’t encounter any opposition amongst people he chatted with personally, he certainly read some impassioned arguments in the editorials section of the local paper. “The odd one would say, ‘What if one of these guys goes crazy and starts shoot-

I know that’s not going to happen, but how does some guy ... know that?” he said with a laugh, noting that his kids were similarly unsure how to respond to the honour. “Teenagers,” he murmured, chuckling. “I think there’s some awkwardness there, too, for sure.... They may be honoured later but right now they think it’s kinda funny.” Meantime, the Hip have assembled in Toronto to begin work on their next album. With Juno-winning producer Gavin Brown (Three Days Grace, Billy Talent) at the helm, Langlois said the band had recorded 10 of 13 new tracks and found themselves ahead of schedule as of Monday. He says they’re hoping to mix the record - the followup to 2009’s platinum-selling “We Are the Same” - by the spring and potentially

release it “towards the end of the summer,” though that’s hardly written in stone at this early juncture. Langlois notes that the band has been recording while playing all at once, with frontman Gord Downie singing live takes as opposed to overdubbing. Otherwise, he’s reluctant to give up too much detail on the direction of the new tunes. “It’s certainly two-guitar rock ‘n’ roll like we’ve done before, so nothing’s changed about the lineup,” he said. “It hopefully sounds like the band playing together, and there’s certainly rock ‘n’ roll in it.” It’s possible that the band could preview some of their new tunes at two upcoming summer gigs - one taking place June 30 at scenic Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., the other July 1 at a park north of Barrie, Ont. The Tragically Hip has, of course, never had to try particularly hard to land a

gig on Canada Day. And, Langlois says, it’s a great time to play - usually it’s an “awesomely beautiful day” during which audiences are in an upbeat mood, ready to toast the onset of summer. Still, Langlois says the band might eventually want to take a year off from Canada Day festivities and enjoy the view from somewhere else - like, say, the end of a dock at a cottage somewhere. “If I had to guess, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t play next year,” he said. “It’s always fun, but sometimes it’s fun not to play on Canada Day. It’s a bit like New Year’s, you know? It’s a great day for Canadian bands, because there’s just so many events ... but then if you do it for a long time like we do, you might start to feel like you’re getting roped into it. “So you take the odd New Year’s off, and certainly the odd Canada Day.”

Popular American TV talk show coming to Banff THE CANADIAN PRESS BANFF, Alta. - One of the most popular American TV talk shows will get a bit of a Rocky Mountain high when it comes to Banff National Park this April. “LIVE! with Kelly” plans to broadcast from The Banff Centre, a national arts training school, in Banff, Alta., from April 2 to April 5. The show’s executive pro-

ducer says celebrity actress and host Kelly Ripa and her co-hosts also plan to enjoy some of the area’s winter sports. Michael Gelman says their activities will be broadcast to the millions of viewers who tune into the show every day. “LIVE!” airs on CTV in Canada, and Gelman says Canadians are some of the New-York-based show’s

most loyal and enthusiastic viewers. Ripa and her now retired co-host Regis Philbin broadcast four shows from Prince Edward Island in July 2010. “This will be our first visit to Alberta, and the majesty of the Canadian Rockies will be a stunning setting for the shows,” Gelman said in a release. The area’s tourism asso-

TV LISTINGS ‘The Lorax’ off to great start THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax� raked in all kinds of green, earning $70.7 million in its first weekend to score the biggest box-office debut of the year by far. The 3-D animated family film from Universal Pictures, featuring the voices of Danny DeVito, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift, is based on Seuss’ cautionary fable about the importance of preserving the environment. Before this, “The Vow� had the best debut of 2012 with $41.2 million. Coming in second place with a strong debut of its own was the R-rated “Project X,� about a trio of high school misfits who throw a raging party in hopes of becoming popular. The Warner Bros. comedy made about $20.8 million.

Epic playoff series starts tonight

W

ell it’s that time of year, w h e n robins return to build their nests, the sun shines a little brighter, the days last a few minutes longer, an overall thaw blankets the land and hockey JIM playoffs hit the rinks. At least for the Beaver Valley Tight Nitehawks, but alas, not so for the Trail Smoke Eaters. The Smokies season was a difficult but necessary step in the rebuilding process. They have an exciting group of character players who are very close to competing with the BCHL elite teams. After a disastrous start, their improved play over the second half of the season does leave reason for hope. Trail plays the Penticton Vees tonight in a game where the Vees, with a win, will set the Canadian junior hockey winning streak record at 41. Trail is one of only three teams to beat the Vees this year and how great would it be if the Smokies spoiled their party. They played them close in a 4-2 loss two weeks ago and have competed well against the elite teams in the league, forcing Merritt and Prince George into overtime with only 13 players, and leading both games by scores of 3-0 and 3-1 before running out of gas. If the team can retain a solid core for next year, then playoffs should indeed be in the picture. The spring thaw seems also to have melted a frosty relationship between the Nitehawks and the Smoke Eaters. It’s no secret that a chill developed between the two teams over the years for reasons both trivial and substantial, depending which side of the fence you’re looking over. So it was nice to see the Smokies’ coaching staff and much of the executive attend the Nitehawks Game 5 win over Spokane Thursday and the Nitehawks reciprocate with their president and supporters taking in the Smoke Eaters’ game on Saturday. It is important for the two teams

to work together in order to develop local hockey talent. Not every Greater Trail kid is going to make the Smoke Eaters line up nor should they, and the players have every right to go elsewhere if they so choose, but from a fan’s perspective, it would be nice to see a couple more Greater Lines Trail kids wearing a Smokies’ jersey and it certainly wouldn’t hurt attendance. In KIJHL action, the Nitehawks are set to take on the Castlegar Rebels tonight in what has the makings of an epic series. The two teams have the best records in the KIJHL and every game is intense and exciting with four of eight matches going to overtime this season. Congratulations to the Nitehawk coaching staff led by Terry Jones for receiving coach of the year honours in the KIJHL, and to Craig Martin for the Neil Murdoch Division’s Rookie of Year and MVP, and Chris Derochie for top scorer and Most Sportsmanlike. I still can’t figure out why Martin didn’t receive RoY for the league. The Osoyoos Coyotes’ Dexter Danks received the honour. Not that he wasn’t deserving, but the 16-yearold Martin did accumulate almost 30 points more than 17-year-old Danks. Perhaps Danks lacked the supporting cast that Martin enjoyed this year with linemates Ryan Edwards and Derochie. Unfortunately, there won’t be a head-to-head match up between the two rookies since the Coyotes, last year’s playoff champions, were unceremoniously bounced from the KIJHL playoffs in six games by the upstart Kelowna Rockets. In another unlikely win, the Sicamous Eagles upset the OkanaganShushwap Conference number-one seed, Revelstoke Grizzlies, in seven games Sunday with a 4-0 win. The road to the KIJHL title and Cyclone Taylor may have gotten a little smoother for the winner of the upcoming series. Don’t miss it - it could be the series of the year. Beaver Valley hosts Castlegar tonight and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Ice end on winning note BY TIMES STAFF The Major Midget Kootenay Ice ended their season on a winning note, as they skated to a 5-4 win over the Thompson Blazers Sunday at the Cominco Arena. After dropping a 5-3 decision in the first of a two-game series Saturday, the Ice countered with a great effort in their final match of the season. Greyson Reitmeier scored the winning goal with just under four minutes to play in the third period, finishing a nice passing play from Mitch Foyle and Brandon Sookro. The Ice jumped out to a quick start when Foyle scored his 10th of the season, on a power play in the first minute to go up 1-0. Two minutes later the Blazers tied it and would go up 2-1 midway through the period before the

Ice responded with 13 seconds left in the opening frame. Darren Medeiros scored his first of two in the game on assists from Foyle and Justin Post. However, Thompson would regain the lead at the 17:57 mark and go up by two just minutes later. Medeiros replied at 8:46 of the second period, with assists coming from Post and Jeremy McGregor. Post, a Nelson native, would bang in his ninth of the season to tie the game less than a minute later before Reitmeier notched the 5-4 winner in the third. Post and Foyle of Fruitvale collected three points in the game, each with a goal and two assists, while McGregor, Sookro and Mederios finished with two-point games.

Jewitt foursome climb the ladder BY TIMES STAFF The rocks were colliding in Trail Mens Retiree Curling action as Bill Jewitt’s foursome climbed into second place in fourth-quarter standings last week. Jewitt’s team scored four in the third end then stole four more points in the next three ends to take a commanding 8 - 3 lead over Harvey Handley’s foursome. It’s Jewitt’s fifth win against two losses, to sit one point behind the Koyanagi rink in Retiree standings. Handley’s team fought back in the seventh end putting seven stones in the house against a single Jewitt stone. But Jewitt stole one, as he drew down

to the back of the house to sit shot and Harvey was unable to make the double take out for a possible 8-ender. The miss proved the end for Handley as Jewitt closed out the game 9-3 Cal McKerracher faced Stan Trozzo in a high-scoring, wellplayed game. Tied at 4-4 after five ends, the McKerracher rink with hammer scored four to take the lead 8-4 after six ends. Trozzo fought back with two points in the seventh and forced McKerracher to throw his last rock in the eighth. The veteran skip made sure of the point and took the game 9-6. The Primo Secco rink stole a point in the

first and second ends against the Tom Hall foursome but the front end for the Hall team, Fred Romano and Serge Peloso, had draw weight all game and pressured the Secco foursome. The Hall rink scored two in the third end and stole three in the fourth for a 5-2 lead. Primo came back with

one in the fifth but gave up three in the sixth. In the seventh, with Primo already sitting two on his final shot, Hall attempted a difficult shot for four. The takeout jammed, and the shooter rolled away, leaving Primo with a deuce. But with the score 8 - 5 for the Hall team, the Secco four ran out of rocks.

the deciding game. No. 6 ranked Yale will play No. 3 Harvard in the second round. Ivy Leaguers Brown University gave Quinnipiac a scare, defeating the Bobcats 4-1 in the first game of the best-of-three series. But the Jones’ twins, Connor and Kellen of Montrose, helped Quinnipiac to a 3-0 victory Saturday followed by a 4-2 win Sunday. Connor netted the winning goal in the

3-0 game while Kellen assisted on all three Bobcat goals. Kellen added a goal of his own in the third and deciding game, as the Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Brown mounted a thirdperiod comeback. TORONTO - James Reimer is looking to welcome Connor Crisp into the goaltending fraternity. After hearing about the Erie Otters forward being pressed into action as an emergency replacement in net Sunday, all Reimer could think of was wanting to send Crisp something to commemorate the performance. The Toronto Maple Leafs goalie was genuinely impressed. “Thirty-two saves - he could let in 20 (goals) but he still made 32 saves,” Reimer said after practice Monday. “That’s pretty impressive for that level of hockey. Being a forward, probably never really playing that position before, good for him.

“That’s a pretty cool experience.” Crisp was forced into action against Niagara when goaltender Ramis Sadikov was injured in a collision less than two minutes into the game. Erie’s other goalie, Devin Williams, had suffered a head injury earlier in the weekend. It was the first time Crisp had worn goaltending equipment since he was five years old and he ended up facing 45 shots in a 13-4 loss to the IceDogs. Making the situation even more unusual is the fact Crisp was appearing in his first game all season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Sadikov’s goalie skates were also a couple sizes too small for his feet, which made it difficult to even remain upright. Reimer believes a defenceman would have an easier time adjusting to the position than a forward. “I think if you were a D-man,

sometimes you’re used to taking a knee and blocking a shot, but as a forward I don’t think it really crosses your mind very much,” said Reimer. “When the puck comes at you, I think the natural instinct is to get out of the way. To fight that and get into the way I think that would be tough. Just the pressure of it all too. “I think he maybe kind of realized what a goalie goes through and how they can dictate the outcome of the game.” News of Crisp’s fill-in performance generated plenty of buzz in the Maple Leafs dressing room. The players were surprised he had to face so much rubber. “One of the guys said `They allowed 45 shots?’ Help the kid out a bit,” said Reimer. Now the Maple Leafs goalie would like to do that himself. “The first thing that crossed my mind is that I would (send him something),” said Reimer. “I have no idea what though.”

Siblings are being terribly unfair Dear Annie: My father is 87 years old and has congestive heart failure. I am the youngest of four siblings, two of whom live out of town. For some reason, everything falls on me. We pay for a caregiver to come in for four hours a day, but she leaves at noon. My brother sometimes takes over until I get home from work, at which point I stay until my husband relieves me. Then I go home to change clothes and return. I have not enjoyed the comfort of my own bed for a while. On weekends, my husband and I take care of Dad together. When my two outof-state siblings last came to visit, I told them this is too much for me and I have no time for myself or my family. One told me he didn’t care about my life, that all he cared about was Dad not being alone. I told him to ask the neighbor how

many hours I am with Dad. He became angry and said that after Dad dies, he never wants to see me again. I left my father’s house and decided if that’s the way it’s going to be, I’ll take the night shift and stay with Dad from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day, but no more. If they want additional coverage, they’ll have to do it themselves or pay for it. One of my brothers can fly here anytime he wants. Dad doesn’t know we argued, and I don’t plan to tell him. I took care of my mother when she was ill and don’t appreciate being treated this way. I think it’s time every-

While your suggestions are helpful if her claims are true, I was surprised you did not mention that one reason why her supervisor interrupts might be to keep her on point. I have supervised many

employees in my life, and it never fails that at least one employee in a group feels the need to prattle on endlessly about tedious details, sometimes totally unrelated to the topic. I suggest you add to your advice

Drawing exhibition opens Friday TRAIL –The Kootenay Gallery will be opening the exhibition season on Friday with The Language of Drawing, a show of works submitted by ten artists who live and work in the Columbia Basin. The Language of Drawing illustrates how ten artists interpret the practice of drawing, one of the oldest forms of visual expression that has played a crucial role in the work of artists throughout history. This exhibition runs from March 9- April 21 with an opening reception on Friday at 7pm. There is no admission charge and the public is welcome to attend. The artists and curator will be in attendance providing an opportunity to ask questions and learn about why they have chosen this particular form of drawing and how it informs their art practice. Drawing, whether used as a ‘means to an end’ or an ‘end in itself’

is a significant aspect of every art practice. The works that make up this exhibit will challenge our traditional definition of drawing. As curator, Helen Sebelius states, “All of these visual stories speak about the artists’ hands-on and highly personalized involvement with their subject matter and materials. Whether created with unconventional materials such as ball-point pens, gel pens, markers, recycled paper, or the traditionally accepted contĂŠ, charcoal, graphite, oil stick, gouache and pastel, their work is visceral in nature, at times obsessive, and always evident of an intimate engagement with their art.â€? On Feb. 28, the J.L. Crowe Secondary’s Outdoor Education Academy trekked to the big horn sheep feeding station on Kootenay Pass. Students observed and learned about the sheep before proceeding to the Kootenay Summit (Bridal Lake Park), for lunch in the cabin by the lake where local naturalist and biologist Toni Appleby explained the dire situation of the most endangered population of mountain caribou - the herd of Kootenay Lake.
