Dr. Cornel Barnard has traded South Africa for Canada and is practising medicine — and our national winter sport — in his new home. Dave Eagles/KTW
By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER

I
T’S A CRISP fall day in October as a group of men gathers in the Ice Box Arena dressing room for afternoon hockey. Player turnout has been low so far this season. But, those numbers are about to grow — from two of the most unlikeliest of sources. Dressed in trendy jeans and carrying newly purchased skates and sticks, in walk Cornel Barnard and Johan Van Heerden. They are two doctors from South Africa who are about to indulge in the most popular Canadian pastime. In Afrikaans accents, they ask the men if they are in the right place — to which they are told, “Yes.”
OUT OF AFRICA
Unfortunately, that particular dressing room is full, so they move to another room. Their look — which resembles something from a European popmusic duo rather than what a typical bluecollar hockey player might don — raises a few eyebrows in the dressing room. But, after a few weeks and some lessons on the finer points of Canada’s beloved game, Barnard and Van Heerden quickly make friends and become part of the group.
They are also part of a medical invasion of sorts. Barnard and Van Heerden are among five doctors from the same graduating class practising medicine in Kamloops and the region. Van Heerden is a general practitioner working out of the Aberdeen Medical Centre, while Barnard is a GP with a practice in Barriere. The two 30-yearolds met on the first day of med school, at the University of the
Free State in the central South African city of Bloemfontein, and have remained friends since. However, unlike South African doctors of the previous generation, who looked for work overseas to escape the violence and volatility of the region, Van Heerden, Barnard and their classmates left the country to see the world and experience something new. Barnard and Van Heerden chose Canada by relying on a bit of word of mouth from other doctors here —
Cornel Barnard and Johan Van Heerden are among five doctors from the same graduating class practising medicine in the Kamloops region and the possibility of playing in the snow. But, their journey to Kamloops wasn’t a simple one. When Barnard and Van Heerden decided on Canada, they had to do their own sleuthing. They registered with a provincial organization called Health Match BC, a government-funded healthrecruitment service. Essentially, Health Match BC assists health-care professionals like Barnard and Van Heerden who want to work in the province. The organization is the expert at dealing with immigration and partnering with doctors to find out how they can get accredited with the
College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. Health Match BC also works with the various health authorities in the province to fill positions in need. In Barnard’s case, he was interested in the Iron Man Triathlon and used Penticton, which holds an annual event, as a geographical refer-
ence point. Eventually, he was shortlisted for Osoyoos and Lytton, but ultimately chose Barriere and moved to Canada in June 2007. A month later, Van Heerden followed, accepting a position in the town of Princeton. X See JUGGLING A10

Kamloops teachers to stop volunteering No sports, no early-morning band practice, no after-school grad planning as part of job action By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
When classes resume after the upcoming spring break, the rules of the game will have changed. In fact, there won’t be any games — or band practices, graduation-planning meetings or overnight trips — because Kamloops teachers will not be doing any volunteer extra-curricular activities. Kamloops-Thompson Teachers’ Association president Jason Karpuk said the idea came from the membership, was overwhelming supported at a general meeting, was re-affirmed at a later meeting and will come into effect after the high-school basketball season ends this week. “We’ll be working to the letter of the contract,” Karpuk said. “Teachers are tired of being disrespected by government and, while it’s certainly not all parents, by some of the public. This is about showing what teachers do.” School District 73 superintendent Terry Sullivan said he had heard some teachers were already withdrawing from volunteer activities at schools and, during the past weekend, he received several emails from students worried about the withdrawal. Sullivan said it’s his intent to ensure as many extra-curricular activities as possible continue, “but the extent depends on getting community and parent support.” Because the withdrawal is for voluntary activities, the restrictions on job action included in Bill 22, the legislation now being debated by the provincial government, don’t have any impact, Sullivan said. One concern is upcoming graduations, but Sullivan noted much of the planning is done by parents. He said the school district has a good relationship with community coaches and he’s hoping they’ll step into the void, but other people will be needed for the non-athletic activities that take place outside of school instructional hours. Karpuk said teachers will be available during those teaching hours to provide consultation on graduations but, at this point, the plan is for teachers to not attend events later this school year. Karpuk acknowledged the withdrawal — which has spread to about five other school districts — will have an impact on students, but said “the kids will suffer under Bill 22.” The action is on the agenda to be discussed by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation at its upcoming annual general meeting, which is scheduled to run from March 17 to March 20. Among contentious aspects of the legislation is a proposal to pay teachers if they agree to larger class sizes — up to $2,500 per year for each student over 30 in grades 4 to 7 and $312 per student per year over the 30 limit in secondary schools.
Beattie School of the Arts teachers Kim Hindle (left) and Jennica Alpaugh hold signs in protest of Bill 22 as teachers rallied on West Columbia Street during last week’s three-day strike. The KamloopsThompson Teachers’ Association has decided to withdraw all volunteer activities outside of classroom hours, effective when school resumes on March 26, following the spring break. LOCAL NEWS Jeanette Carlson of Oamaru, New Zealand, displays a beanie, which she received from Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar. Carlson sent a letter to Kamloops City Hall as part of a class project in 1963, but never got a reply. The response finally arrived last month. Dan Tasker photo/Oamaru Mail

A letter from Kamloops — 49 years later By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
When Jeanette Carlson collected her mail on a busy February afternoon, she had no idea what she was about to open. Among the standard fare of bills and flyers was a package from Kamloops. “What’s this?” the Oamaru, New Zealand, resident asked herself. Too busy to open it immediately, the nurse put the package in her lunch bag and shuffled off to work. It wasn’t until lunchtime when Carlson realized what she had. The package contained a City of Kamloops beanie and pin and letter from Mayor Peter Milobar. “I had kind of forgotten about it,” Carlson told KTW from her home in Oamaru. What she had forgotten was that, 49 years ago, as a student, she participated in a class project that ended in a less than shining moment for the Tournament Capital. The project was to write a letter

9 GREAT MEAL IDEAS to a city in Canada. Instead of picking bustling metropolises like Vancouver, Montreal or Toronto, Carlson chose Kamloops. “I thought, what a cool name for a town,” she said. Like any good grade-school student, she wrote her letter and sent it off. But, as time went by, she didn’t receive anything in return. Meanwhile, all her classmates were opening beautiful packages with pictures, pamphlets and letters from mayors of various Canadian communities. “I was very disappointed, as you are when you’re a kid,” Carlson said. That disappointment turned to surprise and ultimately a good chuckle a half-century later. Last year, Carlson met Canadian Ron Blakely after joining a New Zealand motorcycle group. Blakely flies to the country for a particular bike race every year. Any time Carlson thinks of Canada, she thinks of Kamloops. Naturally, she shared her story with Blakely, who promised to fix
the situation. And, he did just that. Blakely contacted Milobar who, in turn, rectified the 50-year gaffe. In the letter to Carlson, the mayor apologized for the experience. “I can’t speak on behalf of the mayor of Kamloops 49 years ago, but I can assure you that we do our very best to protect and keep the reputation of Kamloops and that of Kamloopsians a positive and friendly one,” he wrote. “Please accept my apologies for the way the situation was handled. “I hope that you will give Kamloops another chance.” “I didn’t need an apology,” Carlson said with a laugh. She said she never harboured any hard feelings toward the city, noting she chalked up the snub to the size of Kamloops at the time. “I still like Kamloops,” Carlson said. Besides attracting attention in Kamloops, her story also managed to land on the front page of her local newspaper and was the talk of the town of 13,000 residents.

Crime-fighting talk begins It’s the next step in the Kamloops RCMP’s ongoing efforts to reduce crime in the Tournament Capital — and it begins today (March 13). A meeting scheduled for this morning at the Mounties’ Battle Street detachment is expected to see various members of the community sitting down with police to discuss the future of Tournament Capital crime-fighting. “What we are hoping to get out of this is feedback from the community as to what is important to them in terms of public safety and what they would like us to focus on,”
A5
said Kamloops RCMP Supt. Yves Lacasse, adding issues will likely involve drugs, gangs and property crime. The meeting is the first in a series of public-consultation sessions Lacasse has slated for the coming weeks. On March 27, the detachment will hold a strategic-planning session with the City of Kamloops. At some point before then, Lacasse said, two public meetings will take place. Today’s meeting is not open to the public.

Call if you see a squirrel Due to an issue with Telus, a phone number in a recent story about grey squirrels in Kamloops had a wrong number to call to report sightings. The correct phone number is 1-855-4687077. There is also information online at introsquirrel.ca. The concern is that these eastern grey squirrels are not native to B.C. and
have, in other locales, already displaced local wildlife, spread disease, damaged and devoured other wildlife.

University ponders major parking-fee hikes By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER

Volunteers Twyla Lambert (left) and Tanya Friesen, both with Random Acts of Kamloops Kindness, survey the seven storage units full of donations for evacuees displaced by last month’s Copper Ridge Court apartment fire. The storage units themselves, at Ace Storage, are also donated. Tim Petruk/KTW
Donations keep rolling in By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
The donations are in and there are a lot of them. “It’s amazing, said Twyla Lambert, a volunteer with Random Acts of Kamloops Kindness. “I’m surprised by the amount we got. Lambert was one of the driving forces behind a collection drive to help residents of the Copper Ridge Court apartment building, which was devastated by a massive fire on Feb. 29. “We probably have enough to furnish every single home, she said. “We have seven stor-
age units completely full to the brim. Over the two weekends since the blaze, volunteers have worked to collect donations — mostly furniture — for the approximately 100 people displaced from the 52 suites inside the Sahali building. Lambert said the donation drive wrapped up this past weekend, with volunteers from the ASK Wellness Centre out on Friday, March 9, and employees from ABC Direct Moving and Storage volunteering their time on Saturday, March 10. The next step is figuring out how to connect the evacuees with the donations.
“I’m just waiting on a couple calls from the powers-that-be so we can organize a distribution date, Lambert said. “At this point, the fire victims are contacting me directly or contacting ASK Wellness. Lambert said Thompson Rivers University is housing all of its students who were living in the building, while 30 accommodations have been secured for non-students. However, she said, there are still a number of evacuees “couchsurfing. Lambert said she hopes to have a better idea later this week about when the donated goods
might be distributed. She is slated to meet today with representatives of the City of Kamloops, the Salvation Army and ASK Wellness Centre. In the meantime, anyone wishing to drop off donations can do so at the Salvation Army. As for victims of the fire looking for information about receiving donated items, they are asked to register with the Salvation Army by visiting 533 Tranquille Rd. Kamloops Fire Rescue is still investigating the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have started in a fourth-floor laundry room.
The price of a parking stall at Thompson Rivers University might be about to get much more expensive. In a campus town-hall meeting last week, two proposals were presented regarding potential hikes in parking costs. Right now, an oncampus parking space costs $3 per day or $150 per semester for students and visitors. Staff lots are also $3 per day, while staff permits cost $25 per month. The proposal contains two options, the first of which would see daily parking rates jump to $3.50 this fall and $4 in September 2013.
The price of a student pass would rise to $175 per semester in the fall and $200 a year later. The cost of a staff permit, meanwhile, would rise to $525 yearly this fall and $600 the following school year. That option, according to the proposal, would increase revenue by $175,000 next year and a further $175,000 in 2013. The second option would see daily rates jump to $4 in the fall and $5 in September 2013. The price of a student pass would rise to $200 per semester in September and $250 a year later. The cost of a yearly staff parking pass would increase to $600 this fall
and $750 in September 2013. According to the proposal, that option would increase revenue by $350,000 next year and a further $350,000 the following year. The proposal states on-campus parking rates have not changed since 2006, when daily rates rose to $3 from $2. Cliff Neufeld, TRU’s vice-president of finance and the author of the proposal, said it’s still in the early stages. “We’ll be getting suggestions from the campus community, he said. Neufeld expects the proposal will go to the university’s senate budget committee in April, then likely to the board of governors.
Above the Law; Notice to public servant trustees re. RCMP contract. You would never know it as main stream media has been mum on the issue, but the RCMP’s 20 year contract is up this year. Keep in mind the RCMP being a fictional “non entity corporation [person with the mentality of a psycho] in their own admission, and as any corporation, they are considered to be “persons under the “law {legislation} albeit an “artificial person with untold immunity, and a license to kill, bully, and extort. We the people know not every officer is a bad apple, but we do notice there has been no shortage of RCMP members in the news recently for dubious acts, both on and off the job, whether it be for drinking driving, physical or sexual assault, sexual deviancies on the job, or the case of the RCMP member caught with his hand in the cocaine jar in Merritt. Law of probability suggests this is just the tip of the iceberg as it were; how many other officers are on drugs, drinking on the job, or unstable and prone to unlawful actions is the question? Many in the public also find it insulting that Nazi road checks spring up like flies on crap in recent years with mandates such as phony legislation of .05 that says even though you’re not breaking the law, you will be punished. To add insult to injury, more recently there has been a push by oligarchs to force breathalyzers in schools in an effort to alter behavior, because their zero tolerance notion demands behavior control and obedience. There has been no precedent; no wild parties in the bathrooms, no drunk kids stumbling into class, just the perceived policy on paper computing zero tolerance requiring total compliance calculated by bureaucrats. Indeed untold taxpayer resources constantly feasting on an unlimited mandate in an effort to determine what is needed to keep our children in line with government corporate mandate. Clearly such an act is a breach of section 7. and 8. of the Constitution Act 1982, though such minor details are an obstacle easily overcome when there is total control through oligarchy government dictatorship. “The constitution is nothing more than a fairytale one public servant told me, another testified in court that he had never read the Charter, much less the Constitution. A public defender refused to serve a habeas corpus to prove their unlawful actions, telling me the Writ of Habeas Corpus was an “ancient theory even though it’s in black and white section 10(c) of the charter, needless to say I fired him there on the spot.

If “they wanted to improve behavior in school, teach children the Constitution and its history, teach children the Magna Carta and its history that enshrines the fundamental principle of natural law that; if you want to get respect, you have to give respect. Society would be better if children were taught the roles and responsibilities of government, and how people are born to respect one another; it’s only through corporate manipulation that we have the environment we have today. It is an act of treason not to teach the Constitution and history of law in schools. Equally treasonous is current government unlawfully dictating “laws [that go against the Constitution] out of thin air, [as the true dictator it is] such as quashing the right for teachers, nurses, and paramedics to negotiate in good faith with its “employer. Maxim: no one is above the law, least of all a sworn officer of the law; therefore we give Public Notice; public servant Shirley Bond, the people demand you to negotiate the contract on behalf of the people. Public servants are required by law to uphold their oaths of allegiance by serving the people through ensuring there is consideration for the people in the new contract to alleviate public outcry for accountability of RCMP. To not address this issue is a breach of public trust, sections 122. cc. Any contract you negotiate that fails to provide considerations to the people is null and void. It’s only fair, if you demand it of us and our children, it is not unreasonable to require all public servants who have sworn an oath to serve the people, be required to; take a breathalyzer each day, pee/hair test randomly, psych evaluation, give blood, and DNA samples for the publics’ sake. This alone would root out many unstable corrupt troubled individuals from tainting the good name of Her Majesty. Brian Alexander, kamloopsbullshit.com

Ashton’s age an advantage By Jeremy Deutsch STAFF REPORTER
jeremy@kamloopsthisweek.com
Niki Ashton is the youngest candidate in the federal NDP leadership race to replace Jack Layton. However, the 29-year-old doesn’t believe her age takes anything away from her ability to lead the party. “I’ve heard from people how exciting it is to see a young person take this on,” Ashton said. The Manitoba MP was in the Tournament Capital on Friday, March 9, as part of a provincewide tour to gather support for her leadership campaign. Ashton said she is proud to speak up for
her generation — one she argued is being held back by the policies of Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, whether it be the high cost of education or affordable housing. “That’s my generation that’s going to be paying the brunt of it,” she said. The MP for Churchill, Man., suggested her message for “new politics” is the right recipe to gain support across generations and restore the orange flag in the KamloopsThompson-Cariboo riding. Ashton contends the Conservative government has been taking Western Canada
for granted. She said the party needs to “stand up for the economy,” noting that, under the Tories, the country has been losing value-added jobs in areas like the forest sector, along with having its say on issues relating to natural resources “I’m seeing how we’re not being heard, a kind of arrogance that doesn’t sit well with Western Canadians,” she said. Though Ashton admits Layton’s death last year, following a battle with cancer, left a void in the NDP, she contends the late politician would want the
party to carry on. “He would want us to keep going based on the direction he took and our principles tied to us as New Democrats,” she said. Ashton is the sixth candidate to visit the city during the leadership race to succeed Layton. Brian Topp was in Kamloops in October, MP Nathan Cullen visited in November, MPs Thomas Mulcair and Paul Dewar stumped in the Tournament Capital in January, while MP Peggy Nash was here in February. The race to replace Layton began in September and will culminate in a leadership convention and vote in Toronto on March 24.

The Kony 2012 movement has taken root in Kamloops, as this sign in North Kamloops indicates. Dave Eagles/KTW
Kony 2012 movement has already made an impact
K
ONY 2012 IS NOW ubiquitous, thanks to a slick social-media campaign by a charity called Invisible Children. Through a half-hour video on YouTube, the charity has shone the spotlight on Lord’s Resistance Army militia leader Joseph Kony, who in the past decade has kidnapped countless children to use as soldiers and sex slaves. The evil deeds of Kony are readily available (and have been for years) in any national and international newspaper and can be found right now online. The point of Kony 2012 is for the great unwashed throughout the world to rise up and, through a onenight event on April 20, pressure the powers-that-be to finally apprehend and place on trial the man who has committed such atrocities. However, as with any so-called do-good endeavour, critics and skeptics have been quick to pounce, calling into question the motives of Invisible Children and the charity’s ratio of spending relative to administration and actual work in Africa. Other critics have argued Kony is a shadow of his former dangerous self, that he is no longer in Uganda (as the video claims) and that there exists equally or more menacing international criminals who deserve to be brought to justice. Then there are the deep thinkers who argue the focus on Kony is disproportionate to the crimes he has committed.
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS These are the critics who take issue with comparisons of Kony to Adolf Hitler. These are the critics who somehow see a racist hue in declaring the movement is nothing more than a guilt-ridden white populace deciding to help Africa — a social crime, according to this group. While there is always room for skepticism (indeed, it is crucial to ask the questions and question the motives), I see this movement as being invaluable from a viewpoint through my daughter’s eyes. In fact, the first I heard of Kony 2012 was when my 13-year-old girl couldn’t wait to tell me about it when she arrived home from school. The fact she was excited and interested and compassionate and eager to right a wrong was, for me, proof enough the campaign has already succeeded. It matters little to me if Invisible Children is spending 32 per cent or 16 per cent of donations received on administrative costs; it matters little to me if details in the video are a bit
off; it matters little to me, in fact, if this global effort does not result in Kony’s arrest and trial before the International Criminal Court Tribunal in the Netherlands. It matters to me that a 13-yearold girl with no previous passion for news and current events is now engaged, is now reading news stories, is now doing research and, yes, is now seriously considering the questions posed by critics of Kony 2012. If a well-executed video campaign can propel millions of people — many of them kids with no previous interest in such serious matters, to act, even if that act is nothing more than plastering posters in little towns like Kamloops — it has succeeded, despite the naysayers and their heads shaking with their know-it-all dismissiveness. On April 20, a date shared with the birthday of Hitler and the mass murder at Columbine high school in Littleton, Col., the plan is for people across the globe to flood their communities with Kony 2012 posters, to make Joseph Kony as famous as possible. Whether this exercise results in anything tangible with respect to Kony is debatable. What is indisputable is the effect this campaign has already had on impressionable minds in Kamloops, across Canada and beyond. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com twitter.com/ChrisJFoulds
The full-scale strike last week by B.C. teachers was inevitable. After essentially working to rule for months while the government dug in its heels on its netzero wage-freeze mandate, tensions finally reached the boiling point and teachers were walking the sidewalks instead of imparting the Three Rs in classrooms. Working parents, accustomed to the workday routines, were left scrambling for alternative care and activities to keep children occupied. That the labour dispute was allowed to reach this stage is a gamble by both sides. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation says the strategy it had been employing since the beginning of the school year created little disruption on learning or the daily routines of schoolchildren and their families while still allowing its members to make their point. By escalating job action, teachers were hoping they would be able to drive home their stand that years of government cutbacks to education have strangled their ability to educate. Government, by introducing legislation that would impose its own mediator to settle the dispute once and for all and force the teachers back to their desks, was gambling the voting public is fed up with the teachers. Letting the teachers cool their heels outside for a few days, causing great disruption to students and their parents, may have only fed that impression. While most high-stakes gambits have a winner and loser, this one only has losers. Students lost three valuable days of learning. Parents lost sleep and likely a few bucks organizing alternative care. Teachers lost income and risked losing support. The government risked losing understanding for its hard-line stance. It’s difficult to see how the wounds from this dispute can heal.

B.C. Liberals are destroying education system Editor: Some questions for Education Minister George Abbott: How can spending millions of dollars on deceitful and inflammatory prime-time TV ads, which attack teachers, help children in classrooms? How can larger class sizes improve the learning conditions for children in those classrooms? How can removing
limits on the number IEPs/special-needs students in a classroom improve the learning conditions in that classroom? How can demoralizing and disrespecting teachers improve education? How can making teachers fearful of unjust evaluation and hiring practices improve education? How can making schools compete for a
meager $35 million a year improve education? More importantly, what happens to the huge number of schools that will desperately need those funds, but are beaten out by schools that are worse off? I have been teaching for about 14 years and thought things could not get any worse for B.C. students, teachers and families.
Boy, was I wrong. Due to the B.C. Liberals’ “education destruction agenda”, this province already has some of the country’s worst learning conditions for students and worst working conditions for teachers. The new legislation and proposed changes will make it far worse. Why would Premier Christy Clark care about improving public education?
SIMON SAYS — HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE! B.C. Lions receiver Geroy Simon shared some of his championship techniques with Logan Lake students when he visited the community on Friday, March 9. While at the elementary school, Simon shared his message that, while he was a talented football player, it wasn’t until he developed the right attitude and listened to his coaches that he succeeded in both sports and life. Simon’s visit was arranged by Black Bull Bull owner Chris Newman, who also took care of the hundreds of photographs the Lion great signed for his Logan Lake fans. Perhaps some teachers are in need of a career change Editor: Its interesting to read all the letters teachers are sending in, but the fact is, they earn more than $50 an hour. I know they will say starting teachers will make a little over $20 an hour, but what trade or profession doesn’t start at the bottom? I am a carpenter and I started at $12 an hour. I know teachers will say they spend lots of their own money on students, but that is their choice.
I know they will say they go for training on their own time to improve their teaching skills, but so do tradesmen — and we don’t get extra money for that. Teachers will complain about how much of their own time they spend preparing report cards. Well, perhaps they need to push it a little harder during the school day, like nurses, doctors, firefighters, police officers, tradesmen and truck drivers have to do sometimes. Maybe then teachers will get their
work done during the day. If that is not good enough, I guess they need to think of another career. I can’t figure out why kids have to go to school five days a week these days anyway. Why can’t they go to school for three or four days a week and spend the other day or two learning at home, on a computer? Think of the savings this would bring to the provincial budget. Juggling patient list of 2,500 X From A1
Shortly thereafter, he took up practice in Kamloops. Van Heerden said his initial move wasn’t easy. “It’s daunting but, when you come with people, it makes it much easier,” he said, noting the large South African community in Kamloops. Besides adapting to their new environment, the doctors also had to adjust the way they practise medicine. The South African health system is much like that found in the U.S. — if you’re willing to pay, you get top care. However, Barnard said, physicians in his home country will often do what the patient wants, rather than what is medically best, for fear of losing clients. That’s not the case in Canada. “You can have a conversation with the patient,” he said, a relationship he believes can result in a better outcome. Van Heerden also has his own views on the health-care system. He noticed doctors here tend to get overloaded with issues that
aren’t necessarily treatable ailments — an example might be a patient with a problem in school. Because it’s free to visit the GP, Van Heerden wouldn’t be opposed to having small fee tacked on to visits, simply to ensure people aren’t using the system unnecessarily for minor problems. It’s not hard to see why. Van Heerden has a patient list of 2,500, while the average GP might have about 1,500 patients. The story of the two South African doctors comes as no surprise to a physician recruiter for the Interior Health Authority. Shelley Wilson, the IHA’s physician community liaison and recruitment leader, suggested a couple of reasons why doctors from overseas are choosing B.C. She said the physicians are either looking to advance their career or they’re in pursuit of the lifestyle the West has to offer. “For lifestyle, we have a fabulous region,” Wilson told KTW. Once they get here, the IHA wants them to stay and has just launched a new initiative focused on recruitment called a “needs analysis.”

It is a strategy to ensure doctors from outside the province or country are matched with the right community to fit their longterm needs. “We also don’t want to waste their [physician’s] time by referring them to a site that is not a match — and we don’t want to waste the lead physician’s time to have a site interview if it’s not a match,” Wilson said. In the case of the South African doctors, they would not have undergone the needs analysis. Though the IHA has several recruitment tools, whether it be using Health Match BC or networking through medical conferences, the best may not actually come from the health authority. Wilson believes a lot of the positions being filled are done so through word of mouth, or by referral from an existing physician. She said it’s important new doctors have someone who they can speak with and share their experience as they get acquainted with their new country.

CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE The Problem: Advances in medical technology mean we are living longer than ever, but not necessarily healthier; it simply means if something happens to us, we are kept alive much longer than would have been expected just 25 years ago! These advances are also changing the role of insurance. We all want to have a retirement and be able to enjoy that retirement as long as possible. However, there hasn’t been a product available to us that would protect our retirement nest egg completely – until now. What’s wrong with existing products? • Life Insurance – Pays beneficiaries only when we die. Life Insurance wasn’t designed to pay you if you live. • Health Insurance, although imperative, presents considerable gaps. In fact, fully 50% of all bankruptcies in 2000 were due to critical health problems! • Disability Insurance – Covers only 60% of income, a challenging proposition for survival for anyone, especially now.
IHA has vacancies for 70 doctors X From A10
“They have a support system, which is so critical when you’re moving to a new area” Wilson said. There are 12 doctors from Barnard and Van Heerden’s class working throughout B.C. — and the influx of doctors is certainly welcome. The IHA has 170 vacancies for doctors across its region, evenly split between family practice and specialty positions. The need is greatest in rural areas. John Bierman is a longtime Kamloops resident and patient at the Aberdeen Medical Centre.
When his previous doctor retired, Bierman moved to Van Heerden, who took over the practice. It’s been a seamless transition. Bierman has no doubts about the young doctor’s skills and will recommend his 91-year-old mom, who is moving to Kamloops from Winnipeg, join the centre. He sees the stream of South African doctors as a positive, noting they help reduce the burden on the system, while bringing a fresh approach to medicine. “I wouldn’t bring my mom if I didn’t trust him,” Bierman joked. In fact, he considers his doctor to be a friend.
Besides getting a kick out of his accent, Ashley Dallas is also impressed with Van Heerden’s work. Other than the accent, she wouldn’t know the difference between Van Heerden and a local doctor. The 31-year-old, who is a practical nurse at Kamloops Seniors Village, previously drove to Salmon Arm to see her GP. “I think it’s good,” she said. “More [doctors] should come. There’s no doctors in Kamloops.” Dallas intends to stay with Van Heerden for as long as she can. However, Barnard and Van Heerden’s jour-
ney will soon take them down different paths. Barnard plans to give up his Barriere practice this month and become a locum (a physician who fills in temporarily for doctors who are away) in Kamloops for a year. He is the going to return home to concentrate on a specialty. Van Heerden admits it will be hard when his best friend of 10 years leaves. But, not only has Van Heerden found a new home in Kamloops, he’s also found love — something he never expected when he left South Africa. He and his Canadian fiance, Kellie, are plan-
ning to get married this summer at Sun Peaks, while the couple just bought a new home in Juniper Ridge. “I consider it [Kamloops] home,” Van Heerden said, adding he plans to stay in Kamloops indefinitely.
The Solution: Critical Illness Insurance – Simply put, this is a tax-free, lump-sum payout upon diagnosis of a covered illness.

Stats show theft of and from vehicles down Kamloops RCMP credit bait-car and prolific-offender programs for helping curb crime By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
Auto crime in the Tournament Capital is down — and local police say the reason is quite clear. “You’ve got to look at the bait-car program and the prolificoffender program,” Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned told KTW. “Those are a couple of things that have been extra beneficial.” According to numbers released last week by ICBC, there were
140 vehicles stolen in Kamloops in 2011. That’s down from 200 the previous year and 480 in 2003, when the bait-car program was introduced. Instances of thefts from vehicles were also down slightly in 2011 to 230, a five per cent drop from the previous year. In 2003, there were 1,080 recorded thefts from vehicles in Kamloops. Learned said the bait-car program has been a great deterrent. “It has thrown a higher degree of likelihood of capture into the
thought processes of criminals,” he said. “And, it’s not just us. It’s the Lower Mainland as well as other venues.” The bait-car program sees vehicles — “regular-looking cars and trucks,” according to Learned — fitted with surveillance equipment and GPS devices, then left in parking lots. If and when a crook breaks in, he or she is caught on camera. If they steal the vehicle, their whereabouts is monitored by the police until they are captured. Bait cars are even equipped
with devices that allow police to remotely shut down the vehicle’s power and lock the doors to prevent a suspect from escaping. The prolific-offender program, meanwhile, targets known criminals living in Kamloops. Learned said it has been invaluable in decreasing instances of auto crime. “When they get out of jail or move back into town, we’re targeting them with curfew checks and keeping tabs on them,” he said. “It’s to keep them honest and straight.”
Despite the lower numbers in auto crime, Learned said it’s still important for local motorists to take care in securing their vehicles and belongings. “We and ICBC and every other group, whether it’s BCAA or other auto clubs, we’re all saying the same thing and people just are not getting the message about leaving valuables in plain view,” he said. “That’s sort of the welcome wagon or invitation for somebody who’s predisposed. It’s a temptation that’s just in front of the nose of these people.”
FUNDING FOR STUDENTS, NOT FOR WAGE HIKES. The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases. It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.
BCTF CLAIMS AND DEMANDS
FACT
The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.
The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.
The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.
The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.
The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.
The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.
The union says that government refuses to negotiate.
There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.
The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.
Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.
The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.
2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.
It’s time to focus on what matters most in education – BC’s students. That’s why we are focused on per-student funding which is at an all time high, not on wage increases. We all want to do more to make BC’s education system even better. It’s the driving force behind BC’s Education Plan that teachers, parents and students are helping to shape. Teachers care about their students. Parents care about their children’s future.

Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Aird said a police cruiser was flagged down by a pedestrian in the 800-block of Victoria Street just after midnight. Witnesses apparently told police a man had been threatening a number of people with a knife in a nearby alley. Aird said police found a man who was high on drugs. He was arrested and a knife, which had been hidden, was seized. The 36-year-old suspect, who Aird said has a history of weapons charges, was held in custody until sober. He is expected to face charges. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call police at 250828-3000.

POLICE BEAT of his court-ordered conditions, according to Mounties. Aird said Mounties were alerted on the morning of Friday, March 9, after a 44-year-old man was allegedly seen breaching his bail conditions — which had been imposed by a judge the previous day. Aird said the man had apparently visited the home of his exgirlfriend, contrary to court-ordered conditions. Aird said the man was able to convince the woman to go with him. “Family members were concerned for her safety and noted she had been beaten up the previous day by someone,” Aird said. Police found the couple at the man’s trailer on G&M Road, but the suspect fled out a back window. He was tracked down by RCMP police dog Zak, “curled up hiding near a garden shed,” according to Aird. The man was held

Punch-up lands trio in the drunk tank The Kamloops men spent a night behind bars after a fight broke out outside a downtown nightclub early Saturday morning (March 10). Police in the area of Cactus Jack’s, at
Fifth Avenue and Lansdowne Street, were called at about 1:15 a.m. to a report of a fight involving three men. Three men were tracked down and arrested. The suspects — ages 19, 20 and 22 — were held in custody until sober. They will likely be ticketed for being drunk in public.

MP takes issue with NDP ‘survey’ Cathy McLeod says calls on pipeline proposal hardly scientific Cathy McLeod wasn’t too impressed with a telephone survey NDP MP Kennedy Stewart conducted in her riding recently. The survey asked people their opinions on Kinder Morgan’s proposal to double its Trans Mountain pipeline. “His survey was hardly scientific,” said the
Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo Conservative MP. “A robo-call is not a very scientific process. I had people call my office, asking what’s going on. Many of them just hung up.” McLeod is also unhappy with a comment in Stewart’s media release, claiming the
Conservative government has already decided to unconditionally support the second pipeline even before the proposal is submitted to the National Energy Board. “I think his comments were out of line,” she said. “He’s making comments even before the application is made. I
find it a little bit irresponsible.” McLeod said that, even though Trans Mountain runs through the middle of her riding, the pipeline has not been an issue until now. “It has not been on the top of the issues but, with the controversies over Enbridge and Keystone, people have
been wondering how it all fits together,” McLeod said. Many Kamloops residents are not even aware the pipeline runs through their neighborhoods, she said, although she doubted that was the case in the North Thompson. McLeod feels the process should be allowed to run its course.

Pack the barn Memorial Arena should be rocking this week during the BCIHL playoffs By Marty Hastings SPORTS REPORTER

ET’S BLOW the top off of Memorial Arena. That’s the message from the TRU WolfPack men’s hockey team, the host squad for the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League playoffs, which get underway on Wednesday, March 14, at the venerable Victoria Street barn. “I think the biggest crowd we’ve had was maybe 1,300 or 1,400,” said Cody Lockwood, a WolfPack defenceman known for his roughand-tumble style of play. “There’s nothing better. When you get 300 or 400, you can just tell the energy is not there.” Lockwood, captain Andrew Fisher, leading scorer Jassi Sangha and
standout forward David Gore have been with the WolfPack since the program made like Lazarus and came back from the dead three years ago. The last two years ended in excruciatingly similar fashion for the Pack — with a loss in the final to the Simon Fraser University Clan, a team the Pack cares for like Ryan Miller does Milan Lucic. TRU kicks its tournament off against the Okanagan College Coyotes — another bitter rival — at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A win would likely set up a TRU-SFU
Friday (March 16) night showdown at Memorial, with puck-drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sangha said some of the most memorable examples of WolfPack fandom came on Feb. 3, when SFU visited Kamloops. “We had the TRU baseball team here,” said Sangha, who finished the regular season tied for fourth in league scoring with 36 points, 18 of them goals. “They had signs and they were just going after them in the penalty box. “It rattled them. Some of the signs were probably not appropriate, but it worked out in our favour.” No word yet on whether the boys of summer plan on giving their vocal cords a pre-spring workout this week — but Sangha said he hopes to hear

them in full mid-season voice when the puck drops on Wednesday. With about a dozen local products on TRU’s roster, the stands will be littered with friends and family from the River City. Their attendance is a given — it’s members of the Kamloops community and the host university’s student body that Lockwood appealed to in an interview with KTW.
“We have a pretty good team and I think we have a pretty good chance of winning this year,” the 6-foot-4, 216pound blue-liner said. “For those people who have never watched before, this is a good opportunity to come down and check it out.” For the full tournament schedule, log on to bcihl.ca. on Sunday, March 18, at Memorial. All of the tournament’s games will be broadcasted live on playfullscreen.com. Getting to the championship game and falling short again will not be a satisfactory finish for any of the WolfPack’s players. For the foursome who have been here for three years — it would be devastating. Their focus, how-

ever, is on the prospect of a once-in-a-lifetime victory, the gravity of which would be amplified by its location on home ice. “It would be nice to hoist that cup with the three guys I started with,” Lockwood said. “And, in general, for the town itself and the university, it would be an accomplishment if we could come out and win it.”

Titans hold off Tigers, claim provincial gold
The South Kamloops Titans senior girls’ basketball team are B.C. AAA high school champs.
The South Kamloops Titans senior girls’ basketball team made history in Vancouver on the weekend. With a 65-61 win over the York House Tigers of Vancouver on Saturday, March 10, the Titans became the first South Kamloops/ Kamloops High team to win a B.C. AAA girls’ basketball title since 1964. South Kam was led by Grade 11 centre Emma Wolfram, who was the talk of the tour-
ney after the big win. Wolfram made two key blocks in the game’s final minutes to put the finishing touches on the Titans’ victory. She was the tournament’s MVP and top defensive player. Wolfram was not the only Titan who played well last week — not by a long shot. Maya Olynyk, Hailey Hamer-Jackson, Abby Grinberg and Madi Ellis were among the South Kamloops players who brought their best when
it counted most. Grinberg, who finished the final with 27 points and 11 rebounds, nailed a three-point shot with 1:16 remaining to break a 59-59 tie before Ellis and Olynyk padded the lead with free throws. Hamer-Jackson was instrumental in a 62-51 semifinal win over the Riverside Rapids of Port Coquitlam on Friday, March 9. She racked up 22 points and seven rebounds in that contest.
Bethany Del Begio, Ashley Lamoureux, Siena Aberdeen, Caitlin Runge, Elizabeth Anderson and Kierstin Landrie round out the Titans’ roster. Everyone contributed to the historic victory, South Kam’s head coach Ken Olynyk said after the victory. Olynyk was aided on the sideline by Jane Wolfram, Sean Lamoureux and South Kam athletic director Corey Yamaoka. There will be a celebration assembly at South Kamloops on Wednesday, March 14, at about 9:45 a.m.
Junior Titans second The South Kamloops Titans junior girls won silver at the provin-
cial championship in Langley on the weekend. South Kamloops lost 47-41 to Oak Bay of Vancouver Island in the tournament final on Saturday.
Sabres fall short The Sa-Hali Sabres senior girls topped the Wellington Wildcats of Nanaimo 60-52 to place seventh at the B.C. AA girls basketball championship, which wrapped up on Saturday, March 10, at the Tournament Capital Centre. Nicole Karstein led all Sabre scorers with 14 points, Shenise Sigsworth racked up 13, while Emily Hilton and Kiana Rainville each scored 11 points. The Britannia
Bruins of Vancouver beat Lambrick Park of Victoria 69-61 to win gold. Sa-Hali’s boys had a disappointing end to their provincial tournament, losing 74-54 to
Abbotsford Christian in the game that decided 13th and 14th place. Mission won the boys’ title with a 70-56 win over St. Thomas More Collegiate of Burnaby.

priate time for Spike to venture forward and pursue new opportunities.” The announcement came one day after Wallace was presented with the WHL Distinguished Service Award at Interior Savings Centre on Wednesday, March 8. “I would like to thank you, Spike, for everything you have done for the organization over the years,” former Blazer and current
City of Kamloops

reached for comment before KTW’s press deadline on Monday, March 12, but he thanked the Blazers and the club’s fans in the press release. “To our community, my thanks for your extended support,” Wallace said.
“A huge thank you to all our fans, members of the Blazers Booster Club, WHL, Kamloops Minor Hockey Association officials and the citizens of Kamloops.” Wallace began working for the Blazers in 1984.

Spring Cleaning Street Sweeping Notice
Please join us at the Parkside Lounge of the Interior Savings Centre: th,
Starting in March, weather permitting, City crews will begin spring sweeping of streets in the valley bottom and working into the higher elevations throughout the City. The Spring Sweeping program on average requires 6 to 8 weeks to complete. In an effort to reduce sweeping time and costs, signs will be posted in the areas that are being swept advising the public not to park on the street. Some high density areas will have parking restrictions posted and/or notices delivered in advance of sweeping, for example, downtown east. Residents who wish to sweep the area in front of their property are advised to remove the pile of sand accumulated as these piles can damage a sweeper, and operators are instructed to swerve around such piles. Your co-operation is appreciated. Inquiries can be made by calling 250-828-3461.

Seasons change, new opportunity blooms
T
HE OUTDOORS BECKON. The trails in Batchelor Heights are dry. Sidewalks are finally ice-free. The roads are drying up even if there is still lots of gravel out there. The road bike came off the trainer and onto the pavement last weekend for the first time this year. At first, I felt a little overwhelmed getting back into the routine of watching for and pointing out potholes, glass and gravel during the group ride, but pretty soon I remembered why I like riding my bike. The wind pushed hard from the front and side no matter which way we went, but the sun was out and the conversation was great (obviously everyone else had more air than me since I did more listening than talking). Every year gets better. Fitness builds over time like adding more bricks to the evergrowing wall, making it more solid with each consistent month or year. The great thing about doing a sport or activity consistently is you can look back over the years and remember when a certain hill took twice as long to climb.
SHAWN WENGER Fitness For MORTALS There are always ways to keep it challenging. You never reach the end where you can say, “OK, that’s as good as I’m going to get at this. Time to quit.” Sometimes it’s hard as we age and we can’t do things to the standard we set for ourselves last decade or the one before, but then it becomes, “How well can I do at present with the age and body and skills I have right now?” I started cycling late enough in life that I’m not looking at how well I did it in my 20s and wishing I could still do it in my 40s. Pretty soon I’m sure I’ll start to see age reduce some speed and strength, but I ride with some pretty amazing people who don’t make any excuses, so I’m not thinking it’ll happen any time soon. So, as long as you have something you’re passionate and excited about, keep doing it. Keep building and growing and loving it.
When you start to lose that, find something else that will keep you focused for long enough to see the improvements. Often, you’ll go back to the past activities at some point and it will be like rediscovering an old friend. The skills will come back quickly and the break will make it seem new and exciting again. Spring weather can help motivate us to new beginnings or just change something existing to make it fresh again. In a few weeks, we should be rid of the mud and ice for good and our long and lovely
outdoor season will start. Find some local trails or a route around your neighbourhood. Walk the outdoor track. Water run or swim in the lake. And, for those out there who still prefer the winter sports, enjoy the last few weeks of skiing. Talk about the best of both worlds . . . THE PLAY’S THE REAL THING The Yacht Club is the scene of theatrical magic as students take part in the afterschool program put on by Western Canada Theatre’s Stage One Theatre School. Among those learning their way around a stage are Laurenne Ryan Willis (back left), Kora Vanderlip, Hannah Franes, Rylee Johnson, Maya Aird, Carter Grice (middle row, left), Jordan Rachynski, Rosa Marks, Kira Schmidt, Isaac Roberge, Sydney Preymak (front row, left) and Lukas Vanderlip. The program is now accepting registrations for its spring break classes. See story, page B2. Dave Eagles/KTW
WCT steps off the stage and into classrooms By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamlopsthisweek.com
Sometime in coming weeks, students in Kamloops schools will learn how to do a gumboot dance. It’s an African tradition and, like the name implies, it involves dancing in what many would liken to rubber boots. The lesson is part of the way Western Canada Theatre (WCT) takes what it does onstage into classrooms. The key piece of its school program is
student matinees, said WCT artistic director Daryl Cloran. One morning during each play’s run, students can attend for a reduced rate of $7, providing “as much opportunity as possible for students to get involved in experiencing theatre,” Cloran said. Workshops are another key — and new — component, with WCT staff and actors from the plays going into classrooms with study guides and activities, all designed to meet teachers’ educational goals. The first workshop was done in con-
junction with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. For the upcoming Ubuntu: The Cape Town Project, the study guide includes a question-and-answer session about the play, with Cloran explaining its development, history, what it contains that students might enjoy and how it will be staged. The gumboot dance is the activity connected with it. Cloran said the lesson from the workshop “is really about inclusivity and our connection to each other.”
The word “ubuntu” means “I am because we are” and it’s a collaboration with the Baxter Theatre Centre of Cape Town. Cloran said he went to South Africa to create the play and worked with the Cape Town theatre because its artistic director was the first white person in the position who put black and white performers on stage together during the years of apartheid. That political reality not only inspired him but inspired the direction of the play. X See PARTNERSHIPS B3

T’S A MOMENT THAT NEVER GETS OLD FOR TERRI RUNNALLS. That second when the youngsters in her class — many of them wondering what they’ve gotten themselves into — suddenly get it. “You can see it,” Runnalls said. “It’s a new world for them and their eyes brighten.” And, that’s when the head instructor with Western Canada Theatre (WCT) knows the connection is made, often one that will last through each child’s life. Every Wednesday after school, students leave their elementary and secondary schools and head to River Street — in particular, the the Yacht Club that is also the site of theatre class, an expansion of WCT’s Stage One Theatre School Stage One has always had
classes during spring break — and registration is open for the upcoming week away from regular school — as well as through the summer. The after-school program includes two levels: A beginner for those just discovering the theatre and an advanced for those ready to put their skills to work. In the spring, these students will present Stuart Little. “It’s just an absolutely wonderful group of kids,” Runnalls said. “A lot of the kids, when they first come in, they’ve never taken an acting class so it’s quite an experience for them.” They learn more than just being comfortable on stage, Runnalls said, because there’s so much more to acting than memorizing a script. They learn time management, for example, as well as teamwork and refining all their creative skills.
“These are hard-working kids and they’re amazing.” They tend to keep coming back, too, taking in the summer sessions of introductory, production and musical-theatre classes. Those areas are also central to the spring break week, with intoductory classes for eightto 12-year-olds and the teen fundamentals class at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre, 7 West Seymour St. and musical theatre for those eight to 18 at Nuance Dance Studio, 253 Victoria St. Runnalls will tech the introductory course, Seanna James has the musical theatre and a teacher has yet to be chosen for the fundamentals. Registration information and forms are online at wctlive.ca/ stageone.htm. Registration for the summer program will be posted later this year.

Ubuntu: The Cape Town Project is the next play in Western Canada Theatre’s season. It will also be the subject of workshops WCT staff will conduct at schools throughout Kamloops to educate students on the issues the play addresses, as well as providing them with an insight into the theatre itself.
Partnerships benefit students X From B1
While the workshops are designed to put the plays into a context for students and prepare them for the matinees, the Stage One Theatre takes it all another step. “It’s been growing by leaps and bounds,” Cloran said, taking students out of the audience and giving them the viewpoint from the stage.
WCT also offers internships and apprenticeships to students, with senior students taking on those jobs also able to apply their work experiences and hours toward their Canadian Actors’ Equity Association requirements. The association is the official representative of performers, directors and other posi-
tions in theatre, opera and dance in English Canada. WCT has also expanded on its partnership at the post-secondary level, working with theatre-arts students at Thompson Rivers University. For the first time, students who work with WCT can get course credit, Cloran said. One of the actors in
the The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which opens on April 19, is a TRU student and will get course credit. “We’re building a really great relationship with TRU,” Cloran said. “And, it just makes sense when you have a university with a theatre-arts program that you would work together.”

Scorpion on its way to Canada
S
MALL, BUT WICKED! That slogan about sums up the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth, the latest model in the 500 lineup that is slated to begin arriving at Canadian dealerships in the next few weeks. Since Chrysler decided to bring the Fiat brand back to Canada after a hiatus of several years, momentum has been growing month after month. More than 5,300 Fiat 500s were sold through the 70 Canadian Fiat dealerships in 2011 and the numbers keep rising, with strong sales in January and February to start this year. Volume has been especially strong in Quebec, where more than 45 per cent of all Fiats have been sold to LORNE DRURY date. What has excited company First executives the most is that 86 per DRIVE cent of the Fiat buyers are new to the Chrysler brand, helping them achieve No. 1 manufacturer sales status in Canada during the first two months of the year. The addition of the Abarth (pronounced ah-barth) model to the 500 lineup is seen as another important step in growing
the Fiat brand here in North America. “We don’t know what kind of volume we’ll get [with the Abarth], but we’ll sell every car we get,” predicted Ed Broadbear, vice-president of marketing for Chrysler Canada. While many people in North America may be unfamiliar with the Abarth name, it is a storied brand in Europe, with more than 10,000 racing victories, 10 world records and 133 international titles. The company was founded more than 60 years ago by Karl Abarth and, since then, Abarth and Fiat have a history of collaboration going back some 45 years, with more than 900 racing victories to their credit. It is this rich racing history that will draw driving purists to this new Abarth, a track-ready subcompact that is at home on city streets, highways and at the track. The Abarth logo, with its scorpion artwork, is well known to racing enthusiasts and is emblazoned on every Abarth model. Karl Abarth’s astrological sign, Scorpio, inspired the logo. It was the sign he lived and, ironically, died under, and one that reflected his feisty nature. Starting at an affordable $23,995, the Fiat 500 Abarth features state-of-the-art powertrain and chassis technology that, at one time, was only available on premium-priced performance cars. This is not just a cute little car like the base 500 — it can be a down and dirty driver’s car when you let it loose on the track.
Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-litre MultiAir fourcylinder engine that makes 160 horseppwer and 170 poundfeet of torque (the base Fiat 500 has 101 horsepower). Mated with a heavy-duty five-speed manual transmission, the Abarth is powerful, yet still delivers a fuel economy rating of 7.1L/100 km (40 m.p.g.) city and 5.7L/100 km (50 m.p.g.) highway. While the Abarth is unmistakable for a Fiat 500, numerous design cues set it apart from the base 500. The front and rear fascias are unique as are the dual chrome exhaust tips, side skirts, rear spoiler and functional air intakes and diffusers. All add up to more than just a pretty face. They aid aerodynamics and improve the car’s performance. Inside the cabin, the Abarth model features include performance high-back bucket seats, three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel, leather wrapped shift knob and parking brake handle, aluminum pedal pads and door sill plates and an analog turbo-boost gauge. These are all items you can see but, what you can’t see is what really makes the Abarth the performance-oriented car that it is. The sport-tuned MacPherson front suspension has a 40 per cent stiffer spring rate than the base 500 and the front end is lowered 15 millimetres. X See ABARTH B7

Abarth-designed front lower-control arms improve lateral stiffness, while the negative camber has been increased to -1.5 degrees and high-performance Koni FSD shocks help produce maximum roadholding grip. In the rear, everything is more heavy duty as well. Springs are 20 per cent stiffer and there is a 40 per cent more torsionally rigid rear axle with an anti-roll bar. Meanwhile, the electronic power steering has also been finetuned by Abarth for increased steering response and feedback. Fiat reports it is 10 per cent quicker than on the standard 500. All this sounds good on paper — but, how is it in the real world? We got a chance to
try it all out during a drive from Las Vegas through the scenic Red Rock Canyon to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch and its 3.1-mile road course. Unlike some other hot hatches we’ve driven in the past, the 500 Abarth lives up to its billing. By comparison, the base 500 is pedestrian in performance, selling the “cute” rather than the “wow” factor. But, start up the Abarth and the turbo four growls with a delightful exhaust note that is loud under hard throttle and then settles down at speed. I found the sound delightful; my wife might think otherwise. Cruising outside Las Vegas through some breezy mountain passes, a bit of wind noise was evident, but nothing out

of the ordinary. The sport seats are comfortable and supportive, however the seating position is quite high and anyone with a long upper torso might find headroom an issue, particularly in models with a sunroof. My driving partner found himself getting a scalp massage at times from the mesh sunshade of the optional power sunroof. The steering column tilts, but offers no fore and aft travel. Despite its small size, the cabin does feel roomy up front. There is a back seat with seating for two, but I wouldn’t want to spend much time in it. I’d prefer to think of it as an extension of the luggage compartment and its 269 litres of space (759 litres with the rear seats folded down). All in all, the cabin is nicely finished for a car in this price range. Our test car had the optional premium leather-trimmed bucket seats in a brilliant red colour ($800) I found most attractive. The unique Abarthdesigned steering wheel is thick and easy to grasp with a flat bottom and controls for cruise, audio and hands-free telephone. Behind the steering wheel is a large concen-

the car eats up the corners like no tomorrow. To dial up better performance, simply punch the sport button on the dash to firm up the steering and add a little extra dose of power. That gets the car from zero to 100 km/h in about seven seconds with little or no torque steer. The electric power steering does its job well as do the upgraded brakes with larger front rotors. A six-speed transmission would be ideal in the Abarth, but for now we’ll have to be content with just the five-speed manual tranny (no automatic is offered) that is a bit rubbery, but workable.

An optional TomTom navigation system is available ($495) and it affixes to the top of the dash. A six-speaker Bose premium audio system is standard. Sirius satellite radio is a $295 option. Chrysler turned us loose for the full 3.1mile circuit at Spring Mountain — and what a treat that was. Despite a 64/36 front-end weight bias,

Lorence Arthur James Klassen 1941~2012 Lorence passed away on March 4, 2012 with his family by his side. He was taken much too soon and will be greatly missed by his wife Brenda, sons Kevin (Cathy) and Darryl (Nicole), sister Anne (Frank), sister-in-law Urstla and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Abram and Annie Klassen, brother John and sister Lena. Lorence was born in Winkler, Manitoba on August 6, 1941. Soon after leaving school he moved to Vancouver with Cam Gard Supply. After a few years of rain, he requested a transfer to Kamloops. It was here that he met Brenda and the two were married in 1974. In 1980 he was hired at Cariboo College (now TRU) in the trades department where he enjoyed working for 21 years. He, his wife, and sons had many great times camping, skiing, and spending time with extended family and friends. In the early 90’s, Lorence and Brenda were “talked into” learning to square dance which was one of the best things that could have happened. They made many, many wonderful and dear friends with whom they shared many memorable trips and holidays. A highlight for Lorence and Brenda was their four month cross Canada trip in 2004. Since then they have made more great friends and enjoyed great camping trips with the Shuswap R.V. Club. Lorence loved spending time in his garden, woodworking, collecting hats, and sitting on the sundeck sharing a glass of wine with family and friends. He continued to be active in the community throughout his retirement; volunteering at Blazers games and driving the Cancer van to Kelowna. He also enjoyed golÀng and curling; appreciating the comradery as much as the game. Lorence had a great sense of humour and loved to make people laugh. He was an amazing husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Kamloops Alliance Church. In lieu of Áowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
