Spring break halts local teacher job action BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff

It will be all silent on the academic front this week while spring break imposes a brief hiatus from escalating teachers’ job action. Unlike last week, there will be

no teacher job action planned for the two weeks of spring break in SD 20, despite a Labour Board ruling allowing for one day per week of demonstration. Last week teachers walked out of classrooms for three days and held a

rally Wednesday in downtown Trail with about 200 teachers and other union members in attendance. But by the time teachers and students head back to the classrooms it is expected legislation to end job action — known as Bill 22 — will

have been passed. The bill is still being debated in the legislature, and indications are the NDP will use procedural tactics to extend debate, but it could still pass by March 16. See TEACHER, Page 3

Japanese ‘quake anniversary felt from Trail BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

PUTTING SPRING IN THE STEP

A similar plan was undertaken in Rossland in 2005 but Trail’s digital result will enable the city to update its map continuously. “Having (Rossland’s) map has been great as an educational tool when I do public displays and people come and find where their house is and they can then look and say, ‘OK, I understand now why I have bears in my yard and here are some the things that I can do,’” said Wieder.

Relief efforts came pouring into Japan this time last year, after the powerful earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the country’s northeast triggered the world’s worst nuclear accident in 25 years. The first anniversary of the devastating event is a tragic reminder of what the Japanese went through – even from as far as Trail, where a 20-year relationship has kept the city connected to sister city, Sagamihara. “Many people in Trail and Warfield have family-type relationships with these people,” said Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs. “Certainly our city has done the best we can within the financial limits we have to continue the relationship.” To represent one dollar for each of the approximate 8,000 residents of Trail, the city donated $8,000 last year to Sagamihara, the Japanese city 40 kilometres south of Tokyo, with Trail Operations matching these funds. This gesture was done without question, said Bogs, noting the bond between the two communities has grown strong since a relationship was originally established in 1991 with the neighbouring community of Tsukui, which is now a suburb of Sagamihara.

Trail digitally maps out bear activity BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff

Trail will know where to greet its furry friends when they come out of hibernation this spring with a digital map of bear activity soon to be released. Barry McLane, a second-year student of Selkirk College’s Geographical Information Systems course, used digital data collected with a GPS unit while touring city neighbourhoods last summer to create a map that illustrates bear hazards such

as fruit trees and residential garbage along with wildlife corridors. The map will then assist in creating a bearhazard assessment report, which will provide suggestions for human-bear conflict management, according to Bear Aware coordinator Sharon Wieder. The approximate $5,000 project kicked off last year with funding from Teck, following a restorative justice agreement in relation to a mercury spill in 2010.

LOCAL Marijuana grow operation busted in Pass Creek

WEATHER Light Rain

TIMES STAFF Over 60 marijuana plants were seized in an RCMP grow operation raid in the Pass Creek area late last week. Police executed a search warrant on Thursday in the 2300 block of Pass Creek Road — 25 kilometres northeast of Trail — and arrested two suspects inside the residence.

Castlegar RCMP Cpl. Dan Pollock said the grow operation contained over 60 plants, some dried and packaged marijuana, as well as a loaded rifle without a permit. Cpl. Pollock said there was also evidence the grower was producing cannabis oil. Five charges have been made against a

Castlegar couple in their mid-40s, including production for purpose of trafficking, unlawful possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm. Both suspects were released by a Judicial Justice of the Peace and are expected to appear in court in Castlegar on May 23.

Seventeen-year-old Ian Walston, right, a grade 12 student at New Westminster Secondary School, holds a sign and cheers during a rally in support of striking teachers in Vancouver on Wednesday.

Teachers head to Vancouver for strategy session FROM PAGE 1 “We are relying on the Opposition to continue to debate vociferously against Bill 22,” said Kootenay Columbia Teachers Union representative Andy Davidoff. “There is nothing we can do over spring break.” He pointed to an amendment proposed by the NDP to appoint a mediator with the authority to resolve the dispute as a bright spot in the labour dispute gloom.

Many teachers will be in Vancouver this Saturday for the BCTF annual general meeting where they will plan their next steps. Bill 22 would outlaw any further job action by teachers until Aug. 31 and calls for the appointment of a mediator, although wage demands would not be dealt with. Teachers are asking for a 15-per-cent increase over three years, but the government has refused to consider any increases.

‘Quake called sister city exchange into question FROM PAGE 1 Described as a friendship that promotes cultural diversity and economic opportunities, the sister cities participate in resident exchanges where the host city looks after the visitors with a place to sleep, meals and recreational activities. A trip for local students aged 13 to 16 was cancelled last year along with a city officials exchange because Sagamihara was putting all of its efforts into relief. “They were living on limited supplies and they did not want to seem like they were spending money on

something that might be perceived as being frivolous when their country was in such dire need,” explained Rodlie, who co-organizers the Trail program with Diana Gonzalez. “Of course nobody knew what was happening with that nuclear plant and how dangerous it was or how much radioactive material was leaking so parents from here didn’t want to risk sending their kids over there.” But this year is shaping up to be different with the city expecting a couple visits from dignitaries this year, former Mayor Amato of

Tsukui potentially coming in May, and a trip planned for Greater Trail teens scheduled for this fall. Rodlie and Gonzalez are holding a meeting March 28 at the aquatic centre at 7 p.m., where students interested in attending the trip planned for Sept.12-24 can find out more information. Participants pay $1,870 for their flights but host families – who also show visitors popular sights like Mount Fuji, Tokyo Disneyland and local markets – open their homes free of charge. The tourists get a real taste of culture when they

Bear data will help with development of bylaws says expert FROM PAGE 1 While full details on what was discovered during neighbourhood tours last summer won’t be available until the map is released, Wieder said West Trail continues to be a problematic area with its covered stairways and green corridors. “There’s a lot of fruit trees and a lot of garbage cans that are just sitting in back alleys, those were the two big ones, which wasn’t a big surprise. At least this way it’s all mapped out so people can have the information and the city can show them how big of a problem it really is.”

The final outcome will help with future development or city bylaws, said Wieder, pointing to Rossland finally adopting a wildlife attractant bylaw last spring. Other communities in the province like Kamloops have already completed a similar assessment, which is one of the mandatory requirements needed to be recognized as a bear smart community under a provincial program, which could help with future financial support. For now, Wieder awaits the first sightings of the season and encourages residents to report

B.C.’s Liberal government is moving to end debate on its controversial back-to-work legislation targeting striking teachers. Liberal house leader Rich Coleman says the government is invoking timeallocation rules to ensure debate on Bill 22 will conclude Thursday afternoon. Bill 22, the government’s Education Improvement Act, would prevent any further strikes or lockouts and appoint a mediator, who will have until August to find a settlement. The province’s more than 41,000 teachers staged a legal three-day walkout last week to protest Bill 22 and press their demands for wage increases. Teachers were already on a limited strike that began in September, in which teachers refused certain administrative tasks such as filling out report cards.

Kids that have their heads stuck in a video game, suddenly discover there is a whole world out there that is much more interesting.” Those interested in finding out more about the student trip may contact Rodlie at 368-9227 or Gonzalez at 367-7325

PROVINCIAL Wind storm knocks out power to thousands

Pickton inquiry placed on hold THE CANADIAN PRESS The public inquiry into the Robert Pickton case has been put on hold until April 2 while the commission searches out a lawyer to represent First Nations. The independent lawyer appointed to represent aboriginal interests resigned last week, and commission Wally Oppal says he doesn’t want the hearing to proceed until a replacement is found. Oppal says it’s crucial the commission have counsel in place to represent First Nations during the hearings, which are looking into why Pickton wasn’t caught sooner as he murdered sex workers, many of them aboriginal, from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Robyn Gervais, the lawyer appointed to represented aboriginal interests, quit last week, saying the hearings were too heavily focused on police and not on the native women who were overwhelmingly Pickton’s victims. Commission counsel Art Vertlieb says they’ve identified a lawyer and hope to secure the appointment soon. Oppal’s report is due by June 30 and he planned to finish hearings by the end of April, but it’s not clear how that timeline will be affected by the three-week delay.

NDP leadership candidates Martin Singh, from left, Niki Ashton, Thomas Mulcair, Brian Topp, Nathan Cullen, Paul Dewar and Peggy Nash take part in a debate in Vancouver, B.C., on Sunday March 11, 2012. The debate is the last before the party elects a new leader to replace the late Jack Layton at a convention March 23 and 24 in Toronto.

Thirty-three-yearold man identified as avalanche victim THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - A 33-year-old Alberta man has been identified as the victim of an avalanche Friday near Sparwood in southeast B.C. The BC Coroners Service says Steven Burke Hall of Birchcliff was among a party of six snowmobilers. Three of them stopped for lunch while Hall and two others continued to ride uphill before the slide struck.

The avalanche came within hours of the Canadian Avalanche Centre issuing a warning that weak layers of snow presented a danger of large slides across much of B.C. Friday’s fatality is the second avalancherelated death in B.C. inside of a week. A man from Squamish died last Tuesday after he and four other snowmobilers got caught in a snowslide near Whistler.

VANCOUVER - The candidates in the NDP leadership race joined their efforts Sunday during the party’s final debate in Vancouver to halt the frontrunner’s momentum, warning Thomas Mulcair’s new vision will move the party to the centre. With just two weeks lefts before the party elects the new leader of the Official Opposition, and voting already underway, the attacks on Mulcair came fast and furious. “How can you inspire people to vote for our party when you don’t seem to be inspired by our party, how do you do that?” asked Ottawa MP Paul Dewar.

show that he has the support of the party’s rank and file. Answering questions about his new vision, Mulcair said the party should recognize some of its failures in the past. “I think at the same time we have to be cognizant of the fact that between the Ontario border and the B.C. border we now hold a grand total of three seats,” he said. Mulcair said the NDP has fought four federal elections in Saskatchewan, the province where it has its deepest roots, and hasn’t won a single seat. To change its fortunes, the party must consolidate in Quebec, talk to Canadians and unite progressives of all stripes, Mulcair said.

Toronto MP Peggy Nash, one of the leading contenders, asked Mulcair to provide details on his plan for party renewal and explain “what specifically did we run on in 2011 that you would change?” Another top-rival, Brian Topp, suggested Mulcair was attempting to move the party “backwards into a divisive and distracting debate about ourselves.” Churchill, Man., MP Niki Ashton continued the barrage, asking Mulcair if he planned to change the party’s language or direction and questioning why it didn’t make sense to just attack Prime Minister Stephen Harper. A confident and beaming Mulcair said his rivals’ attacks

VANCOUVER - A windstorm lashing B.C.’s south coast has knocked out power to roughly 90,000 people, forced the cancellation of several ferry sailings, and cancelled school for thousands of students. Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the region, with winds on Vancouver Island and in the Vancouver area expected to reach up to 100 kilometres an hour in some locations. The storm has knocked down trees and power lines in many areas, with BC Hydro reporting power outages on Vancouver Island affecting about 70,000 customers. Another 20,000 customers are without power in the Vancouver area and along the Sunshine Coast. BC Ferries has been forced to cancel several sailings on major routes between the mainland and Vancouver Island because of the choppy seas caused by the wind.

Union has launched negotiations for a new four-year contract, asking for 2,000 more nurses across the provincial health-care system, but it’s not making any wage increase demands. Union president Debra McPherson says staffing is the No. 1 priority at the bargaining

Nurses are bargaining under a socalled co-operative gains model, which requires any pay increases to be funded by savings elsewhere in a department’s budget, such as through efficiencies or productivity improvements. A finance ministry spokesperson wasn’t

immediately available to clarify how the co-operative gains model would apply to demands for staff increases. The nurses’ current two-year contract, which expires on March 31, included wage increases of three per cent over each of the past two years.

NATIONAL House party that trended on Twitter falls flat

Crime bill set to pass despite NDP delay THE CANADIAN PRESS

THE CANADIAN PRESS Anticipation on social media about a Calgary teen’s house party turned to disappointment when the tweeted address ended up being a nightclub where no one under 18 was allowed. Police had already spoken earlier in the week with Grade 12 student Hunter Mills after the tweet about his friend Kris Morey’s party - with the hashtag #projectkris attracted worldwide attention. On Saturday night, Mills tweeted the address of the party but it turned out to be the Back Alley Night Club in Calgary. Police duty inspector Shawn Wallace says it was just an ordinary night at the club. Some on Twitter have been calling #projectkris the “letdown of the century. Wallace said police were following social network sites to stay informed. Mills told media earlier this week that he caught his friend by surprise with the tweet. Mills said he thought it was funny, and then it “blew up. Within 24 hours of the original #projectkris post, thousands of Calgarians were tweeting about the party, and it eventually it attracted hundreds of thousands of posts worldwide. Users as far away as Australia, Japan and the Middle East were talking about the event.

MONTREAL - Air Canada employees staged a noisy but orderly rally outside Montreal’s Trudeau airport to denounce the federal government Monday. Dozens of members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers blew whistles and plastic horns to protest the government’s decision to prevent them from going on strike. “We want to tell this government that it is antidemocratic, said Marcel St-Jean, president of the IAMAW Montreal local. “They were elected democratically and all we want is that same democracy applied to us (and) that we have the right to negotiate a fair collective agreement for the membership. The workers are upset that the Harper Tories have intervened several times in labour disputes, therefore weakening the position of employees as they negotiate new contracts. Several carried placards marked, “Lisa Raitt, you’re not right, in reference to the federal labour minister. There was increased security at the Montreal airport; the employees were confined to a small area just outside the departures area and were surrounded by orange traffic cones. St-Jean says that while workers are frustrated,

Labour Minister Raitt to introduce back-to-work legislation THE CANADIAN PRESS Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says she will introduce back-to-work legislation in connection with Air Canada and its labour dispute with its pilots and machinists unions. The bill follows a move by the minister last week to block a work stoppage at the airline by referring the dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board. Raitt says the move is to protect the Canadian economy with the legislation. they have no plans to disrupt operations and upset air travellers. OTTAWA - This time they mean it: Stephen Harper’s majority Conservative government is poised to pass its omnibus crime bill and make good on an election promise with a couple of days to spare. A vote in the House of Commons this evening will send the massive bill, which includes nine separate pieces of previous legislation, back to the Conservative-dominated Senate, where it could get its final rubber-stamp and royal assent as early as Tuesday. This coming weekend marks the deadline Harper set last April when he promised the Conservative criminal justice agenda would be enacted within 100 sitting days of a new parliament. New Democrats used procedural tactics last week to momentarily delay the final vote, spoiling a Conservative communications exercise in Woodbridge, Ont., where several top Tories had flown at taxpayer expense to tout the legislation’s expected passage. The bill increases sentences for drug and sex offences, reduces the use of conditional sentences such as house arrest, provides harsher penalties on young offenders, makes it more difficult to get a pardon and allows victims of terrorism to sue.

early to force them all out in a show of solidarity against the latest of many legislated settlements. And there were the BCTFBCGEU pickets that blocked entrances to government offices here in Victoria, harassing, threatening and physically blocking office workers in an effort to force them to join the thousands bused in for the traditional howling show of strength for Big State Labour bosses on the legislature lawn. In my 20 years of criticizing the policies and tactics of teacher union radicals, I have had my office windows smashed twice. I have seen a mob of selfabsorbed strikers push a senior off the sidewalk into the snow. My daughter has been subjected to hard-left environmental propaganda in elementary school. I’ve never seen anything quite like this. But hey, let’s be constructive here. First, I should emphasize I understand

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views that these incidents do not represent the vast majority of dedicated teachers, who wouldn’t think of intentionally abusing their position for personal or political gain. I mean that sincerely. And thanks to all the teachers who sent me lecturing letters, particularly those who insist that they don’t really want another 16-per-cent raise, because their first priority is improving classroom resources. Volume doesn’t permit individual responses to everyone. Authors who begin along the lines of “Sir,

you are an idiot” receive lower priority. If I don’t get back to you, please convey your willingness to accept a brief wage freeze to your union executive. They’ve scaled back some of their more egregious prep time and paid leave demands, but apparently your admirably altruistic message has not yet been absorbed. And yes, I’m aware that the Harvard study of class size and performance I mentioned last week examined charter schools in the United States. I understand that “charter school” is considered coarse language in B.C. As with health care, there must be no serious competitive dynamic or other dangerous experimentation permitted within the unionized state monopoly model. And thanks for suggesting I’m an agent of the B.C. Liberals, who invented poverty 11 years ago. East Van MLA Jenny Kwan touched on it in the

debate on Bill 22. Children coming to inner city schools hungry, inadequately clothed, with lice. Abused children. I can assure Kwan that these tragic realities are not confined to the hellish B.C. Liberal era of spending increases. Indeed, I witnessed all these things in my threeroom school in Tomslake, B.C. in the 1960s. Social Credit was to blame then. I remember the school more for its great teachers than its undrinkable water or alcoholic principal. And to all those who provide spelling-challenged advice on journalistic objectivity, here’s the thing. The first rule of opinion writing is to have one. I’m not looking for middle ground in the cold vacuum between Earth and Planet BCTF. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews. com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

For the better part of three days I sweated over a pile of ‘rockery-sized’ granite boulders, pushing and pulling them out of their wedged positions, and unbelievably lifting them into my wheelbarrow. Each one seemed to weigh more than the last, and some had to be skidded into a tippedover barrow, because they were too heavy to lift. Once aboard, I had to right the wheelbarrow by straining on its opposite side with all my might. Then I wheeled the cargo up the path to my planned rhododendron bed, skillfully laid out around the buried tanks and pipes of our new septic treatment system. Time for a beer Half way to victory, I rested on the fourth day, and went over to my friend Keith’s for a beer. I told him my sweaty story, and he looked at me wisely and said two words: “fridge dolly.” He explained that this was the tool I needed to complete my rockery without breaking my back. “You’ve probably seen one before, stands upright on a single axle with two wheels, latticed metal back and two handles, insert the dolly platform under rock, tilt back, and voila – wheel to chosen site.” “Bugger,” I thought, “Why hadn’t I thought of that?” An hour and $98.00 later, I had one from Canada Tire in the back of my pick-up. I finished the rockery in three hours. As I struggle to master country life, “fridge dolly” wisdom becomes more and more evident and important. Simply put, it is ‘bush logic’ about the right tool or mindset for a task. The bush logicians who are my teachers have by virtue of age and experience acquired wisdom. Collectively Keith, Harvey, Tom, David, and Jim are a national storehouse of applied learning. They are the authors of my oral wisdom textbook. Harvey has contributed chapters on “fresh gas” and “diesel, not gas on the fire pile.” The concept of “fresh gas” is basic to operating chain saws, lawn mowers, outboards, weed-whippers, and log splitters. Old gas has lost its higheroctane segments and fouls spark plugs. You can pull on a starter

cord forever and not get a kick out of a chain saw filled with old gas. So don’t buy too much, and if you have to store it, add a high octane preservative. “Use diesel on the fire pile, not gas, because diesel doesn’t arc.” Classic Harvey. The last thing you need 10 kilometers down a lonely country road is an exploding gas can in your hands. Harv even showed me a YouTube video of a village idiot running around his meadow with a flaming stream of gas arcing out of a plastic gas container’s spout. “Don’t do this.” Enough said. “Use diesel instead.” Tom is the contributor of the two most important chapters about using a chain saw: “stable footing” and “a predetermined escape route” just in case the tree doesn’t fall where you think it will. Tom was a long-haul jet pilot, and he approaches every task with safety top of mind. Whenever he sets out his tools for a project, I watch him carefully, like an apprentice with a Zen master. Everything is ready to work, well maintained, works for the intended purpose, and is put away afterwards wiped down and oiled. David is my hunting mentor. He always knows where the deer are during the rut, because he thinks like the animals he hunts. “Watch what I do.” “Walk behind me.” “Do not talk or snap any branches.” “Be alert for sudden movement all around us.” Hunting deer with David is all about paying attention to laconic bush aphorisms. They are only stated once. The apprentice’s duty is to listen and copy exactly. Once the deer is shot, a new set appears: “make the kill shot,” “always carry a sharp knife,” “watch not

to puncture the bowel,” “the ravens will clean up those guts in 24 hours,” and “we’ll sling the carcass down here right to the truck.” Concise planning, concise execution and concise harvesting all run together in the hunt. Think, and plan ahead My now departed pal Jim was the captain of the Fairisle, an exCPR cedar lapstrake water taxi outfitted for cruising and fishing in the last phase of her career. Off Nootka Island’s west coast Jim stood for: “captain’s checklists,” “pitch sticks,” “wool,” “going early,” and “you can never have too much power in an outboard.” In Jim’s world the captain’s checklist forced you to think and plan ahead. Pitch sticks collected from a fir stump kindled emergency flame in an instant. Wool stayed warm when wet. Like when you fell overboard. Going early meant completing a trip before a serious south-easter blew up. Wimpy motors were for wimps. “You can run for cover with a big motor, and sometimes you’ve got to move.” I now realize my “fridge dolly” list actually started nearly 40 years ago. So far none of my bush aphorisms has worn out from use. I think that is because, mentally, I look after them better than the rest of my tools. And they’ve looked after me. Mike Robinson has lived half of his life in Alberta and half in BC. In Calgary he worked for eight years in the oil patch, 14 in academia, and eight years as a cultural CEO. Now back In Vancouver, he is still a cultural CEO, but also has business interests in a resource company and mutual funds. He is an anthropologist and lawyer by training, cuts his own firewood, and wants more time to write.

PEOPLE OBITUARIES BAINES, KENNETH JAMES — May 26, 1929-March 1, 2012 Ken was born in Trail, BC and spent summers on the Arrow Lakes where he learned and mastered fly fishing. He enjoyed spending time in the mountains; photographing scenery, hiking and cross-country skiing. He also loved boating with his family on Kootenay Lake, waiting patiently for the elusive “ Big One”. Ken worked as a mechanic his entire life. His patience was shown by the number of apprentices he encouraged. His greatest love was his family and spending time with them. Ken married Donna Davies in 1955 and they had a son Kim and a daughter Diane. In 1986 Ken and Donna moved to Edgewater to be closer to their children and so Ken could work as a mechanic in Kootenay National Park. Canadian star stylist leaves imprint on and off red carpet BY LAUREN LA ROSE THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - From styling Barbies to getting decked out as Madonna for Halloween, it was evident from childhood that Brad Goreski had a penchant for playing dress-up. The Port Perry, Ont., native now makes a living playing fashionable fairy godfather to the modern-day belles of the ball: Hollywood stars hitting the red carpet. After landing an internship and later working at Vogue magazine, Goreski eventually ended up as an assistant to Rachel Zoe. He was also featured on the celebrity stylist’s reality series “The Rachel Zoe Project.” Since parting ways with Zoe, Goreski has faced countless questions about a feud between the pair, after his former boss accused him of ditching her right before the Oscars and trying to steal her clients when he struck out on his own in 2010. He has denied both accusations in the past. “How am I dealing with it? I have no comment about it. That’s how I’m putting it to rest. I wish her all the best,” he told The Associated Press during New York Fashion Week last month. Since branching out, the bespectacled, bowtiesporting Goreski is assembling his own celebrity client roster. He helped dress a number of stars during awards season, including “Bridesmaids” star and “Saturday Night Live” alum Maya Rudolph for the Oscars and Jessica

Stylist Brad Goreski attended the Prabal Gurung Fall 2012 show during Fashion Week in New York. Alba for the Golden Globes. “I get excited walking my clients to the car and putting them in their cars when they go off to the carpet. It’s such a beautiful thing for me,” Goreski said in a recent interview. “I always have that flashback to being a kid in my room in Port Perry looking through fashion magazines. Now I’m getting custom gowns from Gucci and putting them on beautiful women and millions of dollars worth of diamonds - it’s a fantasy come true.” While putting his fashionable imprint on the red carpet, Goreski is earning recognition in his own right. The Los Angelesbased stylist recently returned to Canada

for an appearance at a Target pop-up shop in Toronto. He served as a February guest editor for On The Dot, the U.S. discount retailer’s online magazine, creating videos and offering style tips on assembling looks from their collection. His Bravo TV reality series “It’s a Brad, Brad World” recently aired its first season, and Goreski has written his first book, “Born to Be Brad: My Life In Style So Far,” which he describes as a part memoir, part style guide. “It’s going into (the) fourth year now that I’ve been on TV and I thought, `You know, people have one picture and version of me that I really wanted to round it out because I’ve been through a lot in my life

- as we all have - and we all have our stories to tell,” he said. “I’ve been wearing bowties since I can remember.... At two years old I’m wearing a bowtie,” he added with a laugh. “But there’s also been a lot of fashion don’ts. “I’m here to tell people it’s all about experimentation, and also that if I can make it from Port Perry, Ontario to L.A. doing the job that I’ve always dreamed of doing that ... if you put your mind to it and work really, really hard that you can make dreams reality because that’s been my case. I’m still living it and it’s crazy.” Here are some of Goreski’s spring style trends and tips: WOMEN: From vibrant hues to florals, Goreski said prints are big for the new season. “What we’re seeing for spring is a return to the lady. There’s a lot of romanticism, lot of chiffon, lot of flowy fabrics, pastels; and I think that return to feminine dressing, but also with a bit of sexiness to it,” he said. MEN: Goreski said colour is one of the big trends for the new season, and guys shouldn’t shy away from incorporating it within their spring wardrobe. “I think designers are making things that appeal to men and I think taking that extra little time in the morning to make sure you look good will pay off.” Online: http:// www.whosay.com/ bradgoreski

Kerouac’s ‘Beat Generation’ to make stage debut THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Jack Kerouac’s (KEHR’-oo-ak) only full-length play will be staged for the first time this fall. Merrimack Repertory Theatre and the University of Massachusetts Lowell said Monday - on what would have been Kerouac’s 90th

birthday - that they will produce the three-act play called “Beat Generation” in the novelist’s hometown of Lowell, Mass. The world premiere of the play - staged reading for eight performances only - is the centerpiece of the 2012 Jack Kerouac Literary Festival, which will be held Oct. 10-14.

Kerouac wrote “Beat Generation” - which draws on his life and those of other Beat writers, including Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg - in 1957, the same year his classic “On the Road” was released. Online: http://www.uml.edu/ kerouacplay

Rebels stick around, win in OT BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor

It was crunch time for the Castlegar Rebels Tuesday night at the Beaver Valley Arena as they faced elimination and were looking to extend the Neil Murdoch Division series against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. The Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven KIJHL second-round series with a 5-2 victory Saturday in Castlegar so the game was a must win for the Rebels. And extend it they did – all the way to double overtime when Castlegar’s Arthur Andrews put in the game winner at 17:51 on a 3 on 2 break to win it for the Rebels 4-3. The visitors jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a powerplay when Scott Morisseau sent a wrist shot over the glove of a screened Mike Vlanich. The Nitehawks replied on a powerplay of their own when Dallas Calvin snapped a shot past Jordan Gluck at 11:10 to send it into the second period knotted at 1-1. The team’s played tight with few scoring chances until Craig Martin was hauled down six minutes in, sending the Hawks on another power play. Beaver Valley controlled the puck looking for an opening, when Dallas Calvin sent a low slap-pass to Jake Lucchini who redirected it in.

But less than a minute later, the Rebels’ Morisseau replied with a strange goal that popped up and over the glove of Vlanich to even it at two. The Hawks cycled the puck well midway through the second, but Castlegar countered and sent Tyler Robinson in on a breakaway, the forward made no mistake: 3-2 Rebels. Each team had chances in the final frame including the Hawks’ Max Flanagan who made a tremendous individual effort dangling around two Rebel D only to have his high backhand stopped. Moments later Vlanich came up big on a 3 on 2 stopping an Anthony Delong point-blank slap shot, then robbing Morisseau who swung and knocked the rebound out of the air. The Nitehawks finally caught a break, when the puck bounced and Rebels’ defenceman Erik Alden batted the puck with his hand into his own net, tying the game for the Hawks. The score would stay 3-3 in the third and first OT. Referee Jim Maniago put the whistle away until the Rebels Delong received a four-minute double minor for high sticking. But with eight minutes to go, the Hawks had trouble mounting any real pressure and when they did, they squandered too many opportunities. Game 6 goes in Castlegar at the Community Complex tonight at 7 p.m.

The Smokies end season BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor

The Trail Smoke Eaters finished off a difficult 2012 season Sunday with a 5-2 loss to the Chilliwack Chiefs. After taking a 2-1 second period lead on goals by Tanner Clarkson and Riley McDougall, the Chiefs scored four straight to put an end to a dismal Smokies campaign, that saw them finish eighth in the BCHL Interior division with 11 wins and 42 losses. Playoffs have long been out of the picture, and a shorthanded Smokies team struggled in the final two months going winless in their last 15 games, including 6-2 and 5-2 losses to Merritt on Friday and Saturday. The Smokies will lose at least two of their leaders; 20-yearolds, captain Clayton McEwan and team top scorer Erik Cooper, played their last game in Junior hockey, still the team will build on a solid core of young players acquired this season. The team now looks ahead to next year and

will run their spring camp from Mar. 30 to Apr. 1. On the upside, the Penticton Vees streak came to an end, as the Prince George Spruce Kings scored three goals in the third period to take a 5-2 home win over the Vees, stopping the streak at 42. With the game tied 2-2 heading into the third, Myles Fitzgerald popped the winner at 7:16 of the final frame, before Michael Colantone added a pair of insurance markers, to hand the Vees their first loss since Nov. 5. The win earned Prince George the third seed in the Interior Conference. Also, the Spruce Kings’ Paul De Jersey added three assist to claim the Brett Hull Trophy with 98 points on the season, two better than Penticton’s Joey Benik who had one assist Saturday night. The Powell River Kings clinched top seed in the Coastal Conference with a 7-0 road win over the Victoria Grizzlies. Logan Proulx’s Cowichan Valley almost claimed the second

seed but came up short finishing a point behind Surrey to take third spot. Despite firing 62 shots at Langley Rivermen goalie James Barr, the Capitals lost 2-1 in OT at home. The Chilliwack Chiefs win over the Smokies and a 5-2 home win over the Westside Warriors leaves them one-point behind Prince George for fourth spot in the Interior Conference. The Chiefs play topseeded Penticton in the first round of BCHL playoffs. The Merritt Centennials’ two wins over the Smokies guaranteed them second seed in the Conference and will play P.G. The first round of the BCHL playoffs commence Friday. With files from BCHL

Mota stages dramatic comeback BY CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News

It was March Madness in Trail Thursday night as hot shooting and strong defence allowed Mota Automotive to rally from a 17-point half-time deficit to a victory in the Trail Men’s Basketball League final at J.L. Crowe.

Mota was able to build a 12-point lead in the second half over Castlegar Realty. However, the Castlegar boys weren’t finished as they went on a rally of their own to cut the Mota lead to two points. Mota was able to hold on down the stretch for an 82-76 win. After finishing fourth in the

regular season, Castlegar Realty beat Rossland in the 4th/5th game and then knocked off topseeded Northport from Idaho to advance to the final. In the third-place game, Northport came from behind to tie the score at 65 with a last second three pointer. There was no overtime.

HIGH SCHOOL CURLING

Crowe takes silver in B.C.’s BY TIMES STAFF The J. L. Crowe Secondary School placed second at the B.C. Boy’s Secondary School Curling Championship last week. The Crowe team made up of skip Kelvin Harper, third Justin Umpherville, second Spenser Soukeroff, lead Dakota Ravestein, and fifth Dylan Gach went 6 and 1 in the tournament in Dawson Creek. Thursday, the boys won handily over South Delta Secondary, 8-1 and Burnaby North Secondary 7-1. However in their third draw the team faced eventual champion Frances Kelsey Secondary. Down 2-1 in the fourth end, Kelsey counted two more to go up 4-1. Crowe would get

two back but lose it 6-3 in eight ends. On Friday, the team got back into the groove. The Crowe foursome made a brilliant comeback in their early draw over Centennial Secondary. After Centennial scored three in the first end and stole one in the second to go up 4-0, Crowe scored two in the third, then stole one in the fourth, before scoring in the sixth and seventh to tie it at 5-5. Incredibly, the Crowe team stole two more in the eighth end to take the game 7-5. The team rounded out their impressive 6 and 1 record with wins over last year’s champion Dawson Creek, 5-4, Salmon Arm, 5-2, and Smithers Secondary, 7-4, to take home the silver medal.

Montrose’s Spencer McLean, no. 27, is a true workhorse, making space for himself and his team mates, finishing every check and his speed strikes fear in defender’s eyes, an unsung hero.

No. 11, Ryan Neil of Fruitvale, is a giant whose moves are as silky as the icing on the cupcakes he loves so much. Keep an eye on him as he’s likely to break a game open at any moment.

No. 44 Blake Sidoni of Trail, nicknamed “Gunner” for his 18-inch guns he stuffs into his jersey but also for his unique ability to snipe at will.

Montrose’s Cole Gallo, no. 30, cleans the crease with vicious authority, scaring shooters to float pucks in from the blue line rather than face the wrath of this netminder.

TRAIL REC REPORT

Manning market intensifies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals, for decades the laughingstock of the NFL, find themselves in the running for the services of one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks. Peyton Manning spent nearly 6 1/2 hours at the Arizona Cardinals’ headquarters and training facility on Sunday in meetings designed to lure the superstar to the desert. The session followed a meeting of nearly six hours Manning had at the Broncos’ facility in Denver on Friday night. The two sessions were evidence that, for the time being at least, Arizona and Denver appear to be the top two contenders. After his Arizona visit, Manning headed home to Florida, where he may or may not meet with the Miami Dolphins and return to his workouts as he comes back from a series of neck surgeries. Manning waved and smiled at cheering fans as he walked from the Cardinals’ facility to coach Ken Whisenhunt’s white SUV. With the coach at the wheel, Manning waved

again as the SUV pulled through the security gate and past the loud supporters. Titans owner Bud Adams told The Tennessean on Sunday that he has contacted Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, to express his interest and ask for the quarterback to visit the Titans. The 89-year-old Adams said he will be upset if he doesn’t land the former Indianapolis Colts star. Multiple reports on Sunday had Manning declining visits to Seattle and Kansas City. Cardinals President Michael Bidwill, son of owner Bill Bidwill, left immediately after Manning and Whisenhunt did. It has been under the younger Bidwill’s leadership that the franchise has shed its pennypinching image and found success on the field. Larry Fitzgerald, one of the best receivers in the game and considered a prime reason why Manning might choose Arizona, spent about three hours at the Manning sessions before leaving to make a flight to Australia for a vacation.

SASKATOON - Glenn Howard didn’t let the Brier Tankard slip through his fingers this time. Often a finalist at the Canadian men’s curling championship, Howard was building a reputation for losing championship games. He put that behind him as he led Ontario to a 7-6 win over Alberta’s Kevin Koe in the final of the Tim Hortons Brier on Sunday. Howard, third Wayne Middaugh, second Brent Laing and Craig Savill will represent Canada at the world men’s championship March 31 to April 8 in Basel, Switzerland. It was the sixth Brier final in seven years for Howard and his front end of Laing and Savill, but just their second victory. They won the Canadian title in 2007. Howard howled for joy when he met with reporters after his victory. “Little bit of a monkey off our back, I think.” Howard said. “The guys made everything and thank god. They brought it tonight.” Howard, 49, also won two Briers playing third for brother Russ in 1987 and 1993. They reached the Canadian final five times. “I just can’t believe I’ve won the Brier four times,” said the beer store owner from Tiny, Ont. “I’m pretty proud to be on some of the greatest teams that ever walked the earth as far as I’m concerned. “I surround myself with some of the best curlers and it feels great to win another one.”

Middaugh, who skipped Ontario to Canadian and world titles in 1998, joined the Coldwater Curling Club team at third prior to this season after Richard Hart retired. Middaugh earned the Hec Gervais award that goes to the most valuable player in the playoffs. Howard, Alberta’s Kevin Martin and Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton are Canada’s heavyweights in men’s curling. The odds are one of those three will represent Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics. But four losses in five Brier finals from 2006 to 2011, plus falling to Martin in the final of the 2009 Olympic trials, raised questions about Howard’s ability to finish the job. He dispelled the doubts in Saskatoon. Ontario played five extra-end games in the round robin and Savill was ill with a stomach ailment, yet they topped the preliminary round at 10-1. Howard then dominated Manitoba’s Rob Fowler 9-3 in the playoff game between the top two seeds. Ontario completely controlled the first seven ends of the final, making no errors and pouncing on Alberta mistakes to lead 4-2 after five ends and 6-2 after six. Alberta had Howard under pressure in the eighth, but the Ontario skip drew for a piece of the button and the point to stay up 7-3. Koe scored his first deuce of the game in the ninth, but Howard was still up two coming home with the hammer.

METS

Injuries hobble team THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LAKELAND, Fla. New York Mets reliever Tim Byrdak will have surgery Tuesday to fix a tear in his left knee and will be miss four to six weeks, while star third baseman David Wright has gotten a cortisone shot for his ailing rib cage. Byrdak was expected to be the Mets’ only lefthander in the bullpen when the season started. He was 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 72 games “Obviously this will impact our left-handed relief,” general manager Sandy Alderson

said Monday. “We’ll just have to evaluate things as we go forward. But I would suspect that Byrdak would not be available to us for some portion of the regular season. We’ll have to accommodate that.” Wright has not played in a spring training game this year. He’s been slowed by pain in his left rib cage and is in New York awaiting further treatment. Wright injured a muscle in his rib cage during an infield drill early in camp. He has not swung a bat yet.

Alberta set up to score two and force the extra end. Howard hit and rolled out, but could afford to give up a steal of one and still win. When Koe had hammer, he drew against three or more Ontario stones for single points in the second, fifth and seven ends. Ontario also communicated sweeping calls more precisely than Alberta. Koe sounded tense demanding feedback from his teammates. “It was a struggle,” Koe said. “They played great and we were off a little early. You just can’t make mistakes like that against those guys. “We just couldn’t get the rocks in the right place (during) the first half of the game while we were still in it. All our points were draws against a bundle. They played awesome.” Middaugh’s shooting accuracy was graded 98 per cent and Howard’s was 95. Alberta third Pat Simmons was rated at 78 per cent and Koe at 81 at the halfway mark. Simmons was ill for the entire tournament with a throat infection that worsened as Alberta entered the playoffs. Howard’s record in finals at the world championships is more impressive. In three trips two with brother Russ - he’s won all three. “I don’t know if you know, but we’re 34-1 in our last 35 games,” Howard said. “Bit of a run, so I hope we can bring that into Basel.”

Encourage husband to pursue new friendships Dear Annie: My husband, “Rick,” had been close friends with “Edward” for 30 years. We used to get together frequently, and Edward was always kind and considerate and someone we highly respected. Then, Edward got engaged to “Michelle.” I was pregnant at the time, and my doctor put me on bed rest because I had already been hospitalized once. I could not travel out of state for any of the festivities. However, Rick was gone nearly every weekend attending the engagement party, bachelor party and wedding. He said Edward was not acting like himself during these visits, saying he was uncharacteristically inconsiderate and strange. Two months later, I gave birth to a girl, and we invited Edward and Michelle to the baptism. Edward called to say they would not be attending because Michelle was hurt that

I didn’t come to the wedding. She said my absence meant I did not support their marriage, and they needed time to “heal” from this insult. Michelle also was offended that Rick’s wedding speech did not make enough mention of her. Rick and I were livid. Not only did my doctor forbid me from traveling to the wedding, but Rick spent a long time composing a thoughtful, funny and heartfelt speech and even delivered some of it in Michelle’s native language. Rick angrily confronted Edward and disinvited them to the baptism. Edward then claimed it was a mis-

communication. When Edward and Michelle announced that they were pregnant, we sent a thoughtful baby gift, which Edward and Michelle did not acknowledge. Rick is determined to rebuild the friendship. He calls Edward at least once a month, but the calls are often unanswered and unreturned. It’s been a year since “the phone call,” and I’m still furious, but Rick is grieving. Edward does not deserve my husband’s loyalty and forgiveness, but for Rick’s sake, I want them to reconcile. What can I do? -- Scorned and Angry Dear Scorned: We are so sorry that Edward’s marriage has thrown a wrench into his relationship with Rick, but these things happen. The only one who can fix it is Edward. Be supportive of Rick by sympathizing without being negative about Edward

or Michelle. Encourage new friendships by introducing yourselves to other couples with young children. The best thing you can do for your husband is to help him move forward one day at a time. Dear Annie: I am a skilled professional and have been unemployed for a year. I have applied for many positions via online postings that are often anonymous. After sending my resume and cover letter, I am frustrated that I never hear back. I have no idea whether they received my information or read it, and there is no way to follow up, as I have no idea who they are. I know they probably get a lot of applications, but a short courtesy note would be nice, even if it’s “thanks but no thanks.” -- Oregon Dear Oregon: We completely agree. Unfortunately, because these sites do not have a contact person, no one feels a personal

obligation to respond. Even an automated response saying your resume was received would be a step in the right direction. Dear Annie: “Sibling Support” said her mother is always asking for money for the younger

siblings, but spends it on herself. The next time she has occasion to talk to her mother, she should open the conversation by saying, “Mom, I’m a little short this week. Could you possibly lend me a few dollars?” I guaran-

tee this will nip those requests for help in the bud without having to refuse her outright. “Sibling Support” can then buy treats for the younger siblings directly, leaving Mom out of the loop. -- St. Maarten, Dutch Caribbean

NATIONAL Smokers have only themselves to blame: tobacco companies BY SIDHARTHA BANERJEE THE CANADIAN PRESS

MONTREAL - Tobacco companies embroiled in a historic civil suit kicked off the trial Monday by arguing that smokers who get sick or can’t kick the habit have nobody to blame but themselves. The landmark class-action case, with up to $27 billion at stake, kicked off in a Montreal courtroom where Canada’s three biggest cigarette companies began their battle against a group representing all of Quebec’s 1.8 million smokers. It is considered the biggest class-action case in Canadian history. It is also the first time tobacco companies have gone to trial in a civil suit in Canada. Two lawsuits are being heard together and they involve separate groups of Quebec plaintiffs - some who have gotten seriously ill from smoking, and others who say they can’t quit. The defendants - Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd.; Rothmans, Benson & Hedges; and JTI-Macdonald - were heavily armed with lawyers and pubic-relations staff as the

case finally came to trial, 14 years after an initial group of plaintiffs filed a suit. Imperial Tobacco called the case an “opportunistic cash grab. One by one lawyers made their opening statements, with the companies arguing that the public has known for decades that smoking can be harmful. Tobacco firms also tried shifting blame onto the federal government, which regulates their industry. The companies said they have always followed federal rules. In recent years, the government has ordered that graphic warnings be placed on packaging and has changed the visibility and marketing rules to curb smoking. One of the lawyers for Imperial pointed to a series of federal government memos from the 1960s that, she said, proved the government was aware smoking was harmful. “Those who decide to start smoking or continue smoking should assume responsibility for a choice they make - because no one can say they don’t know about the dangers associated with smoking, said lawyer Suzanne Cote, who represents Imperial

Tobacco, Canada’s largest tobacco firm. “Everything Imperial Tobacco has done is legal and in large part with guidance from the federal government. The smokers claim they were duped for years by big tobacco companies who misled the public with slick advertising campaigns, dubious marketing and skewed research. One of the lead plaintiffs told reporters Monday that she started smoking in the 1960s after being “programmed by industry TV advertisements that made cigarettes seem cool. Cecilia Letourneau started smoking at age 19 in 1964. Despite her repeated attempts to quit, she said she hasn’t succeeded. The Quebec case is being closely watched both in Canada and abroad, said Rob Cunningham of the Canadian Cancer Society. “The tobacco industry has repeatedly tried to postpone this trial but they have been unable to delay the inevitable forever, he said. Lawyer Bruce Johnston, who is representing Letourneau, said the industry’s attempt to blame the federal government is

a non-starter. Johnston said it’s the companies that are liable - not the victims or the federal government. He said nothing absolves the companies for putting out a product that, according to him, they knew was harmful but found ways to show otherwise. The case involving smokers who can’t quit seeks $10,000 in compensatory and punitive damages per plaintiff. Johnston said that figure had been carefully calculated. One other civil case that has been certified stems from a 2003 filing in British Columbia, involving light and mild cigarettes. A trial date hasn’t been set in that case and others filed elsewhere in Canada are nowhere near trial. The Quebec case took more than 13 years to make it before a judge after delays, motions and appeals. Separately, provinces are also seeking the right to pursue tobacco companies to recoup health-care costs. The Quebec civil trial won’t be over for some time. After the plaintiffs make their case, the defendants won’t start theirs until 2013.
