CHOOSINGTHE RIGHT

GRID SYSTEM for your permeable driveway/pathway project IDEAL DESIGN While plastic grid systems for stabilizing grass and gravel have been commonplace in Europe for decades, they are now becoming popular in North America with both developers and homeowners. These systems allow them to use grass or gravel to create stable, drivable surfaces for driveways, parking areas and paths. The increase in use of these systems in N. America has brought some excellent products to choose from as well as some which should be avoided. Failures have come in the form of fractured plastic, excessive gravel displacement and design failures that don’t withstand the specified use (e.g. turning tires)

An ideal design incorporates a connected pattern of closed cells, such as those shown here. These closed cell designs contain the entire volume of grass or gravel in a given application and provide sufficient strength to support both pedestrian and vehicular use. Turning tires (the ideal test for a plastic grid system) are no problem on these types of grids. There are many variables to consider when selecting a plastic grid system for your permeable and stabilized grass or gravel surface. Be sure to consult your local landscape architect/designer to ensure that the product you use is properly matched to your intended use.

The Pond Store …is now OPEN

EXAMPLE OF A FAILURE DUE TO POOR DESIGN FOR SPECIFIED USE This fine gravel has become compressed and the delicate shallow cells have been damaged by vehicle use. Product failure is as a result of: • incorrect product for project use – light duty plastic used in heavy duty application • product design only contains gravel in rings and not open areas around rings • incorrect fill (poorly specified gravel – no fines should ever be incorporated into a plastic grid system)

Preconception and Pre Natal Care WITHTRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE Traditional Chinese Medicine states that the health of both parents, physically and emotionally prior to conception is important in determining the health of the baby. Research shows that it takes at least three months for lifestyle changes to take effect. A healthy pregnancy is achieved when the body is balanced, creating an optimum environment for the baby to grow. MORNING SICKNESS The principles of traditional Chinese medicine attribute morning sickness to an imbalance between blood and qi in the vessels. During the first trimester dramatic changes take place as the mother’s qi, blood and essence nourish the fetus. If there is a constitutional weakness of the stomach, anger, worry or fear, or multiple pregnancies close together morning sickness may develop. Things that can help Eat small meals throughout the day and something before getting out of bed, never get hungry. Drink enough fluids. Ginger or peppermint tea sipped throughout the day is helpful to aid digestion and calm the stomach. Wear sea bands on wrists, these bands stimulate important acupuncture points for nausea. Research from Adelaide University Women’s hospital has found that acupuncture is an extremely effective treatment morning sickness in early pregnancy. 593 women who were less than 14 weeks pregnant were treated with weekly

acupuncture sessions; nausea was reduced as well as dry retching. MUSCULAR PAIN Many women experience pain during pregnancy as the ligaments of the body relax and the weight of the baby increases. Acupuncture is an effective, natural pain reliever for carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain or pelvic pain. The British Medical Journal in March 2005 found that acupuncture showed the greatest reduction in pelvic girdle pain from those receiving standard care. BREECH POSITION A breech position is when the baby’ ready to come out first. Often the baby will turn on its own without intervention but if this does not occur moxabustion, an herbal stick that is heated, is used on a specific point on the foot to stimulate fetal activity and help the baby turn. This treatment is most successful if performed at 32-36 weeks. The Journal of American Medical Association 1998 reported that moxabustion applied to 130 pregnant women with breech presentations significantly increased the number of head first births. PREPARATION FOR LABOUR Acupuncture can be used weekly from 36 weeks to delivery to help prepare the mother and baby for labour. Studies have found that a weekly acupuncture protocol leading up to delivery helps with cervical dilation and perineum

The first stage of labour is shortened by 125 minutes and a 33% decrease in medical inductions is required. Acupressure or acupuncture can be used during delivery to help ease pain and speed delivery. Often acupressure points can be stimulated by the birth partner to ease pain and shorten labour. BOOK CORNER THE GLOBAL FOREST by Diana Beresford-Kroeger $16.00 Heading into Spring Break last year I reviewed Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods – a testament to the rich rewards of spending time in nature. This spring I have been reading The Global Forest – 40 ways trees can save us. Drawing on her Irish storytelling roots and employing equal parts science and poetry, Beresford-Kroeger opens 40 little windows into the life of the forest –

the living, breathing, communicating, reproducing life force with its complex interactions of mammals, amphibians, birds and insects, fungi, lichens, bacteria and viruses. Diana Beresford-Kroeger writes passionately and compellingly about trees and forests. In forty short chapters, she guides us through different aspects of the forest, highlighting and explaining what we

The Bamix’s specialty blades easily puree small batches of homemade hummus, veggie dips, smoothies, soups and homemade baby food. DRIED FENUGREEK

Dried Fenugreek leaves add a warm, grassy and nutty flavour and fragrance to curries, breads and crackers. Simmer with lamb curries and lentils and fry with greens (especially spinach). When fish is curried fenugreek is frequently included in the spice mixture. Many chutneys and pickles incorporate it and it gives a tangy aroma to fullflavoured vegetables such as cabbage. The leaves, both fresh and dried, are used in meat curries and dhal. The seeds are an ingredient of the Middle Eastern confection halva. Flour mixed with ground fenugreek makes a spicy bread. A refreshing tea can be made by infusing one teaspoon of the fenugreek seed with two cups of water for five minutes. The leaves are less bitter than fenugreek seeds. Among the oldest of cultivated plants, fenugreek is native to southern Europe and west Asia.

Use the Bamix directly in your own bowls or pots, or use the included hand jug. All components are easy to use and easy to clean.

QUALITY BRAS This summer’s trend: MAKEYOU LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST EVERY DAY Some consider bras to be like white tube socks – any old pair will do under running shoes. However, we politely beg to differ. A bra is not simply an item of clothing to be worn under others, of unimportance; a bra is a foundation garment that supportss everything you put on top. And when we say foundation, we mean it. A well-fitting bra makes you look younger, sleeker and can even make you look like you’ve lost weight.. And there is nothing like looking in the mirror and seeing the very best version of yourself looking back. But it’s not just the fit that matters with lingerie, it’s also the quality. But what do you get in a $99 bra that you don’t get in a $29 bra? As it turns out, you’re getting quite a bit.

HERE’S SOME OF WHAT YOU FIND IN HIGH-QUALITY UNDERGARMENTS: 1. Scalloped edging to prevent the elastic digging into you and producing a sharp line visible through clothing. 2. A back panel that is cut on an angle so when worn it will appear straight and properly distribute the tension and weight across the undergarment. 3. Straps that don’t stop at the bra but continue on to the hooks for stabilization and strength. 4. Wires made of the highest quality, nickel-free steel. Wires that are wrapped in layers of foam and fabric to prevent them from poking through the bra or poking into you. 5. Microfibre that wicks moisture away from the body and can be engineered to support you as well as stays and whalebones. 6. Fibers that have a lot of “kickback” and return to their original shape and size after wearing, providing superior longevity to the garment. 7. Hypoallergenic products with all elements tested for allergies and quality. 8. Adjusters on the straps that are welded rather than stitched to lay flatter and make them less noticeable under clothing. 9. Closures that are very comfortable and lay flat. 10. Superior fashion and fit. A bra better engineered to fit a woman’s shape with individual silhouettes in mind.

PRINT SHOES

You probably noticed print shoes in all the shoe store windows last winter. There was no shortage of geometric shapes and showers of shining stars, proof that shoe designers have been taking seriously the task of putting feet in the spotlight! Well, it looks as if they succeeded, because spring styles are showing our thirst for ever more innovative patterns. To celebrate the return of the warm weather, several es and collections are placing floral print brand names e stores. VALLEY LIVING FASHION & BEAUTY

New Season, New Hairstyle!

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

COMBAT INACTIVITY!

This spring don’t just update your wardrobe, update your hair! Get together with your stylist and get ready for a new fresh hair style and hair colour.

Physical inactivity causes millions of deaths every year and is one of the five main risk factors for death in North America. We are currently faced with a real crisis in physical inactivity and obesity, which could lead to almost unimaginable costs in the future due to an epidemic of chronic illnesses. Fortunately, all society has to do to change this depressing scenario is to exercise more! An adult should do 30 to 60 minutes of moderate physical activity every day. However, this is easier said than done, especially for adults caught in a busy routine of work, children, caring for elderly parents, domestic chores, etc.

YOUR BEST STYLE: Face shape is a key part of a haircut. Wondering why certain haircuts don't look good on you? It’s usually your face shape that comes into play. Work with your stylist on this. OVAL: You are oval if the length of your face is greater than the width. Oval faces can really play with all types of haircuts depending on hair texture. Add a fringe and your face will become more square looking, while a midlength cut with some layers adapted to your hair texture adds movement.

An adult should do 30 to 60 minutes of moderate physical activity every day.

FIVE TRICKS TO HELP YOU SUCCEED WITHOUT TURNING YOUR SCHEDULE UPSIDE DOWN:

SQUARE: The width and length of your face is similar with a broad jaw line and forehead. You can go with harder lines in your cut, such as a shorter bob. Cut a fringe to accent the jaw line or go with longer hair and shorter layers to add texture and soften the face. Careful: very short hair can look hard.

ROUND: The width and length is quite similar, but there’s a circular feeling to the overall face shape. Short hair is for you! If short hair is not your thing, keep it all one length. Also stick to more classic cuts that are mid-length or long. Bobs can make the face look rounder and often are not flattering. HEART: If your cheekbones and forehead are wider and you have a delicate chin, you are heart shape. You are a candidate for a straight across fringe. This shape is close to an oval, so you too, have versatility when it comes to the styles you can pull off. Great look a shorter disconnected bob.

LONG: Your face is longer than it is broad – often narrow in width, and with high cheekbones. Long hair works with some shorter layers cut in to add shape and framing to the face. Bangs can also help in making your face appear shorter—adding width will create the perception of less vertical length to your face. HAIR COLOUR UPDATE: Very white blonde is coming back. You have to, of course, have the dramatic look and style to pull it off. For something more subtle, go with a blonde shade the colour of spun gold. For brunettes, ask your stylist to work in some caramel tones throughout your hair for a fresh for spring look. Ombre coloured hair is still wildly popular: keep your roots a shade of brown and have your mid lengths and ends light brown, copper or dirty blonde. Red heads should veer away from blue-reds this year and opt for copper reds. Note: adjust your makeup to go along with your new hair colour.

Remember a hairstyle is not just following a fashion trend but a matter of choosing a style that makes you look your best and is best suited to your lifestyle.

1. The idea is to get moving, not just to work out at a gym. So take every opportunity to shovel, dig, scrub, walk, climb stairs, etc. 2. After supper, don’t sit down in front of the television before going for a walk or a bike ride with your partner, your children, the dog... 3. Make the most of your lunch break to walk, bike, swim or work out. 4. Weight bearing or impact exercises, which are great for bone health, should always have a place in your routine: jump rope, garden energetically, etc. 5. Don’t neglect muscle toning exercises either. Exercises such as muscle pumping and abdominal crunches increase muscle mass, strength, and endurance. These exercises can easily be done at home without you having to miss your favourite TV series!

Spring Maintenance for your home

“Plant” Garden Art for Spring. Now that everyone has bought their new plants and seeds during Seedy Saturday, don’t forget to “plant” some garden art when planting your gardens. Consider the opportunity to add some fun in your garden by adding garden sculpture and artwork. A piece of artwork is what defines your personal style and adds artistic interest. Use a specific piece of garden art as a focal point or to complement your plantings. When picking out a piece of artwork, ask yourself these questions to help select the perfect piece. How much do you want to spend? Cost is the ultimate deal breaker when it comes to selecting garden art. Once you have decided on a budget, it is easy to select garden artwork as it is

available in all price ranges and sizes, so the pieces will start to distinguish themselves. Where will you place the artwork? Will this piece be scattered along a garden path or a focal point in a courtyard? Is your garden a grand space or a patch of dirt? Scale is important when selecting garden artwork… make sure the size will fit the space you have allocated. Also the space will help you to select a style. Perhaps consider some oversized spheres if you are looking to decorate your lawn. If you are accessorizing a formal courtyard, perhaps seek out a one- of-a-kind sculpture or ornament. For smaller gardens, wobblers are a great way to bring in

some artwork. Or, you can do something simple like hanging birdhouses and wind chimes throughout the yard. How to decorate with garden sculptures? Carefully collect pieces to create your sculpture garden. Choosing your artwork is up to your personal preferences and style and can even reflect the décor of the interior of your house. Don’t forget those bare fence panels and the outside walls of your house. These are perfect spaces to add metal art for a finishing touch. Now is the time to shop for your garden artwork while the selection is at its best.

Has harsh winter weather damaged your home? Has snow clearing ruined your flowerbeds? Has the wind torn off some of your roof shingles? Spring brings lots of little fix-ups that need your attention, but for most of them you don’t need to be an expert in renovations. The exterior of a home usually needs some preventive maintenance in the spring, once all risk of freezing has passed. A few simple tasks will be sufficient to improve the appearance and the value of your residence.

FOUNDATIONS Check to ensure that no new cracks have appeared and that existing ones have not increased in size. Call in an expert to fill the cracks and solve the problem once and for all.

WINDOWS If the paint on windows, outside cladding, or the patio has peeled, the wood is probably damp. Any rotten wood should be replaced before repainting.

DRIVEWAY Examine your driveway and other paved surfaces, including those of indoor garages. Identify all the potholes and cracks in the asphalt that will have to be repaired. Stepping stones in walkways that have broken, chipped, lifted, or sunk over the winter will also need repairing.

GUTTERS Once the blossoms from spring-flowering trees have fallen, clean the gutters even if you did them in the fall. Take advantage of this extra cleaning to make sure the anchors aren’t loose and that your gutters are draining efficiently. Use a garden hose to detect any leaks and ensure that water drains freely through the downspouts and away from the house.

Relax in your own home,

with a home theatre that surpasses most cinemas.

Movies are meant to be experienced.

RENOVATIONS inspired by spring This year’s decorating trends are inspired by the 1950s and combine lively colours with natural materials.

Because our mood is often influenced by the season, Bec it’s co common to get the sudden urge to redecorate when the colours of spring start to emerge after the winte Beautifying our surroundings is akin to carrying winter. natu nature’s awakening into our decor, to the renewal of life, especially as it centres around the pleasure of ente entertaining and living comfortably in our homes. T This year’s design trends are influenced by four key fac factors: cute, raw, refined, and a mix of these. All these inf influences are inspired by the 1950s, meaning they are a combination of kitsch and contemporary. The cute eleme element is found in carefully designed small objects, the raw in natural materials such as various types of wood

and natural fabrics, and the refined is represented in the care brought to elegant decors and in the choice of accessories. Once again this year, the colours of walls, accessories, and floor coverings create a lively atmosphere, springing from all these latest trends. Our decor becomes a tonic to draw us away from the winter blues. Among this year’s colours, candy pink and lemon yellow are definitely at the top of the list, along with turquoise blue, apple green, and all the acid tones. Neutral shades inspired by nature keep their role as a base colour to contrast with brighter shades. They are available in warm, cold, or metallic tones.

VALLEY LIVING INTHE HOME You’ve probably heard, “We’ve come a long way, baby” in reference to the changing roles of women over the past 40 years. But, the same can be said in the world of window coverings and old-fashioned décor trends. For most baby boomers, we had white window shades that we’d tug on to raise, and our mothers would warn us not to let them fly up or we’d wreck the spring mechanisms. We also had white or off-white walls; draperies were usually solid colors of some neutral tone that complemented the neutral-colored carpeting. Thank goodness decorating trends have changed. Not only has color and variety become a staple of modern decorating, but, technology has given us much more choice. Today’s window blinds and shades are vastly different than those of yester-year. Some are layered, with a light-blocking back shade and a decorative top shade, giving you flexibility in décor and lighting. A product growing in popularity is the top-down/bottom-up blind, so you can keep people from looking in, yet you can still see outside through the top part of the window. Most blinds and shades provide UV protection and serve as insulation from the cold or heat. Some even have remote controls. When you meet with a windowcovering specialist, you’ll want to discuss features and options to ensure the recommendations meet your objectives, budget, and taste.

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

WINDOW COVERINGS HAVE EVOLVED First, consider functional features. Are you blocking light from coming in or people from looking in? There are choices for the amount of light—from opaque to room darkening. Is your motive purely decorative? Do you care about UV protection? Are children in the house, so cord cleats are a feature you would like? Second, consider the look. Manufacturers, such as Shade-O-Matic, offer more than 30 styles of window coverings and hundreds of fabrics in a variety of colours and textures. Whether you prefer cellular shades, mini blinds, Roman shades, vertical blinds, panel tracks, bamboo shades, or just want drapes and curtains, you have many choices. If you are tired of the décor in one of your rooms, or even your office, window coverings may be just the change you need. But, if that’s not enough, consider accessories or complete ensembles that can be custom-made to complement the windows and make your room what you envision.

BEDS

First item, the crib - that and one of those fabulous Runner Buggies from Extreme Runner’s to help recapture your figure. Consider cribs with the “Built to Grow feature. These are designed to convert to a single bed when the child is older. Many have drawers to slide underneath or a trundle bed for a sleep-over friend. The initial cost may seem daunting, but the long-range benefits are worth it.

Children’s Rooms are a challenge they grow and their needs change. With a little planning, their rooms will be easy care and functional.

Professional OfďŹ ces Residential 3FUBJM t $PNNFSDJBM

CHAIRS A rocking chair to rock the child to sleep or for nursing is wonderful, I found myself having catnaps - a wonderful boost to my energy level. For the older child a pint-sized desk that has a drawer for storage. The desk must be big enough for a colouring book and a laptop. A sturdy table lamp is a must, as is a comfortable chair that fits under the desk.

(New and Renovations)

INTERIOR DESIGN

A storage place for everything and teaching our children to tidy up after playing makes everyone’s life easier. Wicker tends to unravel after a few uses - I suggest a wooden box with a removable lid rather than one with a hinge that can pinch little fingers.

SAFETY Cribs and/or beds with rails MUST have a locking system as well as spindles properly spaced so that little heads can’t get caught. Chests, hutches and tall bookcases must have restraint systems to prevent them from tipping. Drawers should have automatic drawer stops. Children under six SHOULD NOT be using bunk beds. Bunk beds must have guard rails on BOTH sides of the top bunk. A TV in the bedroom? make sure it is supported to prevent tipping. Cords for the TV, and everything electrical should be behind furniture and need to be bundled and/or concealed.

APPOINTMENTS RECOMMENDED

Yes!

THE FUN PART - Decoration Paint is the easiest and least expensive way to give a room personality. Use a paint that is easy care - one where the finger marks come off and the paint colour doesn’t. Whatever colour you choose, use the same paint finish and colour on the walls, ceiling and doors. Paint the baseboards, door and window trim white. Wall murals are exciting - but costly. Wallpaper borders are inexpensive, have many themes to please toddlers, preteens (and you) as they are easily removed. Children love to “remember their first rooms and decorating with favourite artwork, stuffies and colourful bedding makes it easy. For boys or girls bedding, try deep blues, yellows, browns and hot pink to give the WOW factor.

EXPERT ADVICE

Focus onVinyl Vinyl flooring is smart, practical and beautiful. It stands up to water, moisture, scuffs, scratches and indentations in a warm, comfortable and ‘it-looksgreat’ kind of way. In a class all its own, today’s vinyl flooring offers you a wide spectrum of exciting choices and unusual design options. Whether your décor is traditional, contemporary, or country, there is a large selection of vinyl flooring that will allow you to find the right style and colour to match your decorating schemes. The newest trend in today’s vinyl flooring is the reproduction of natural looking ceramic, slate, and stone designs, offering the texture, richness and the feel of real ceramic or stone tiles, but with a much easierto-maintain finish. Vinyl flooring also comes in a huge variety of beautiful wood grain patterns. Ranging from light to dark, and fine to rougher wood grain finishes, you can easily get the look of hardwood in your home.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN WITH CEDAR As spring nears, many of us are looking to our yards and gardens to plan our next project. When considering exterior structures such as decks, fences, gates, gazebos, railings, pergolas, arbours, stairs and furniture, Western Red or Yellow Cedar is the most sensible choice of wood. Because of a naturally high concentration of oils and resins in cedar, it will withstand the elements without any treatment. With the application of a quality stain and some care, it will resist decay for many years without worries that it will have to be replaced. A cedar structure will add a spectacular focal point to your garden. Covered structures can offer sun and rain protection for your family, extending your living space outside. Fences and arbours highlight your plants and flowers, offering complimentary structure to the design of your green space.

Finished stool with a coat of finish of your choice. Enjoy gardening!
