It was instinct, the automatic urge to lend a hand when danger approached. There was no time to think, just time to act. So that’s what Simon Grant did.
It has been more than two years since Warrant Officer First Class Grant acted, and last week he was rewarded by the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Grant, a member of the Air Cadet Squadron 861 Silverfox in Abbotsford, was presented with the Cadet Medal of Bravery. He received the honour for his “outstanding valour as an Air Cadet, involving the risk of his own life to save others and maintain their well-being.” The incident took place Oct. 10, 2009 in Fort Langley. cadets were helping with the local cranberry festival, unloading and loading trolley buses. The buses were parked on an incline and were filled with people. The bus Grant was helping to load suddenly began to roll on its own, with no driver inside. “The brakes failed. I heard a snapping, odd sound and suddenly the bus was moving,” he said. Knowing there were passengers on board, Grant moved quickly.
It appears Langley’s latest murder victim was shot multiple times while trying to rip off a marijuana grow up in rural Aldergrove on Friday night, said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. No arrests have been made so far for the murder but several people have been arrested for the cultivation of the grow operation, said IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound. Surrey resident Korey Kelly, 25, who has an extensive criminal record, died on the way to hospital. It was around 9:30 p.m., when police en route to a shooting were flagged Sgt. Jennifer down by two of the victim’s associates in the area of 16 Pound Avenue and 272 Street. They led officers to the victim who was in the backseat of a car bleeding and unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. It’s believed Kelly’s associates were trying to drive the victim away from the crime scene, when the driver pulled over when he saw a police car approaching. The victim’s associates, believed to have been with Kelly in the botched grow rip, were interviewed this weekend as were many other persons of interest, said Pound. IHIT is currently interviewing many persons of interest for both the grow rip and the homicide, she said. continued, PAGE 6
