The B. C. Liberal government’s move to push Bill 22 through legislature has dashed the hopes of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) for a negotiated settlement. Cariboo-Chilcotin Teachers’ Association president Joan Erb says the passing of Bill 22 will be a “very dismal day” for all unions in the province. “I remain very concerned
about the abolition of Bill 33; that scares the daylights out of me. It means we have no control whatsoever over how many kids we have in our class.” The bill will authorize Education Minister George Abbott to appoint a mediator to find a settlement restricted under the net-zero public sector wage mandate during a six-month “cooling off” period. Theatre reschedules Barney Bentall Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The show must go on. That is the thought of Jacquie McKay of the South Cariboo Theatre, where musician Barney Bentall was booked to perform in concert on March 17, as part of the Slapback Music Production Blues Jazz Concert Series. Slapback cancelled the show last week due to poor ticket sales, but that did not sit right with McKay and she has arranged for Bentall to perform on March 31 at the
Barney Bentall theatre. “We had advertised this show was taking place, and when you say you’re going to do something, you should follow through. We’re concerned about our future. “It’s the reliabil-
ity factor. We want people to be assured that we will follow through with things.” McKay says she was extremely disappointed about getting news of the cancellation and is very excited about the turn-around. She adds booking Bentall for an alternate date was a bit difficult because he is also scheduled to be at the Juno Awards, which take place April 1 in Ottawa and will be out of the country following that. McKay says he changed his travel plans to make
it work. “He really wants to do this concert because he’s a local boy.” Bentall owns a ranch near Clinton. McKay says that pre-sold tickets for the March 17 date will be honoured on the new concert date, and if necessary, people can also get refunds until March 20 at the South Cariboo Theatre. New tickets are on sale for $40 at Donex and at the theatre box office, Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. “We’ll see how it goes, and if it does
Daffodils show support for CCS Heather Nelson Free Press
The daffodil is the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) symbol of hope in the fight against cancer. These cheerful blooms are sold every year and mark the beginning of the society’s annual doorto-door fundraising campaign in April. Today, the CCS is the world’s largest purchaser of daffodils and the growers in British Columbia
must arrange their plantings to meet the needs of the Society’s spring demand for live blooms. Daffodil Day is April 27, and the society wants people to support family members and friends who have been affected by cancer, by purchasing the flowers or pins. “I’d like to thank everyone who takes the time to purchase daffodils,” says local contact Heidi Meirer. “These flowers are
a symbol of hope and every donation takes us closer to a cure for cancer.” Another way to show support is by purchasing a daffodil pin, sold by donation and available at Pharmasave and the BC Liquor Store in the Cariboo Mall. Cut flower orders are available until
March 19. For more information, call Meirer at 250-3956039. For information on the society and daffodil day, visit the CCS website at www.can cer.ca/canada-wide/ how you can help/ cw-fundraising activ ities/cw-daffodil days, or call 1-800403-8222.

Jamboree will mark close of season South Cariboo Theatre Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The minor hockey season has all but finished in the South Cariboo except for a home tournament and a spattering of camps and special events that some players will be attending during the next few weeks. This weekend (March 17-18) will see the 100 Mile House Attitude on Ice Female Jamboree take place at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre with close to
90 female players between the ages of five to 16 participating. They’ll be coming from Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof, Prince George, Clearwater, Lillooet, Kamloops, Williams Lake, Quesnel and Kitimat for fun and female camaraderie on the ice. The jamboree-style format will see individual registrants, rather than teams, with girls placed on teams according to their age and skill level. While the young-
er players will only play round-robin games, the older ones will have finals on Sunday. Games start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and run until 10 p.m. On Sunday, the girls are on the ice from 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Sunday at the jamboree will see the results of the Crack the Safe contest where a lucky person who has guessed the four-digit combination to the game safe will win a $1,000 cash prize. Entries are $1
TEACHERS… from page 1 She adds the class-size cap for Grades K-3 is unchanged, and Grades 4-12 has a maximum class size of 30 students. “The maximum can be exceeded only if there is a band or a choir where it may be more advantageous to have a couple of more students, but the decision must be approved by the district superintendent, so it’s not something that can just happen. In the Cariboo-Chilcotin, I met with the school board and apparently we have no class size over 30.” It was time for the B.C. Liberal government to step into the negotiation stalemate, she adds.
“I support Bill 22 because we have to move on. This is not about teachers; this is about unions. This is about organizations that had 78 meetings and they couldn’t come to some conclusions.” Barnett says tax-
payers have told her unequivocally that “enough is enough” and they are not willing to accept any more taxation. “If we did not learn that lesson with the HST [Harmonized Sales Tax], then we all have a problem.”
apiece and will be available at the jamboree until the contest close.
Off to The Show On March 30, some members of both the Atom Free Press Sharp Shooters and the Primal Electric Shockers teams will travel to Vancouver to play exhibition hockey during intermission at the Canucks versus Dallas game. They were selected to play through the Mini Minor Hockey Program, which is open to Atom and Peewee minor hockey teams. The program is offered through the Canucks Centre for BC Hockey.

The CaribooCentral Interior Poultry Producers Association (CCIPPA) will be holding a forum sponsored by Viterra ProForm, at the 100 Mile Curling Club Lounge on March 24. A full day is scheduled with panel sessions, display tables and keynote speaker Dr. Bill Cox, Ministry of Agriculture poultry health veterinarian. This is open to the general public, as well as producers, retailers and supporting businesses, says CCIPPA director Margaret Bishop. “We are looking for new members and this would be a good way for people to learn what we are all about. The day starts at 8 a.m. with registration and opening remarks are from 8:45 to 9 a.m. Then there are three scheduled panel sessions with topics ranging, including marketing to local commercial buyers, do’s and don’ts of bringing poultry to slaughter, and looking ahead at 2012. “One of the discussions will be on the mobile procession unit and docking stations that we are building in this area. There is a docking station at New Cal Rabbit farms where producers can bring their chickens or rabbits for example, unload them and have them dispatched.
Bishop adds the docking stations and mobile procession units are government inspected. The association is looking for pre-registration of $25, but will accept registration at the door, including dinner for $25, which starts at 5 p.m. The annual general meeting is scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information or registration details, visit www. ccippa.ca.

Get ready for the annual 108 Ice Off Heather Nelson Free Press
Folks are invited to guess when the ice will be gone from 108 Mile Lake and winner of the closest guess to the exact time wins $100 in cash. “As far as I know, the Ice Off Contest first started in 2002,” says 108 Lions Club member Jim Gellein. “Graham Allison, here at the 108, found the hull and built the cabin and the mast on the good ship for the 108 Lions.” Over the years, the ice has come off the lake from as early as March 25 to as late as April 29, says Gellein. Last year, the ice came off on April 24 at 6:45:49 p.m. “I measured the ice last year on March 3 and it was at 20 1/2 inches. This year, on March 1, it was at 16 1/2.” The Ice Off Contest is a special fundraiser for the 108 Mile Lions for their community projects. Entry enve-

The Cedar Crest Society (CCS) Saturday Program children recently attended a mini workshop hosted by Mardi Babcock of Selvedges. “Our children were treated to a Valentine’s craft,” says Rhonda Brown, CCS services for children co-ordinator. “[Babcock] not only provided all the materials for the craft, but also the candy that went inside.” Five children participated in the craft
Tanya Hammerstron. She adds the children were able to use
materials they don’t normally use. “They made a felt
pocket, with buttons and ruffles filled with candy. Mardi was
fabulous; she was so good with the children.” It was so nice of her, Hammerstron says, adding it was
a “community-inclusive occasion.” In appreciation, the children signed and delivered a thankyou card to Babcock.
Ideal and unique solutions for: real estate • property development • resorts • hotels • event photography • tourist attractions • restaurants • exhibitions • insurance documentation • unlimited possibilities •

FUNDING FOR STUDENTS, NOT FOR WAGE HIKES. The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases. It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.
BCTF CLAIMS AND DEMANDS
FACT
The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.
The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.
The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.
The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.
The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.
The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.
The union says that government refuses to negotiate.
There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.
The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.
Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.
The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.
2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.
It’s time to focus on what matters most in education – BC’s students. That’s why we are focused on per-student funding which is at an all time high, not on wage increases. We all want to do more to make BC’s education system even better. It’s the driving force behind BC’s Education Plan that teachers, parents and students are helping to shape. Teachers care about their students. Parents care about their children’s future.

HOCKEY POOL STANDINGS Balance of Hockey pool standings from the March 14 Free Press (as of March 11, 2012)
WEEK OF MARCH 18 TO 24, 2012
THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: GEMINI, CANCER, AND LEO.
ARIES
At the beginning of the week you will feel a bit drained of energy. It is important to take some time off to rest and build up your resistance to seasonal illnesses. TAURUS
You are surrounded by people you can trust. This is a good time to get involved in a long-term project that involves a lot of people. In fact, this is a wonderful time for you to initiate all kinds of things. GEMINI
You will be required to ponder a decision involving your home or your family. You are also in charge of a lot of people. Managing your stress in healthy ways will help you with this. CANCER
Either at home or at work you will have to negotiate with someone who has a little bit of difficulty speaking English. Be thorough if you plan on making purchases online. LEO
You may have to deal with some strong emotions from your life partner, especially if you are experiencing financial pressures. If you keep your calm, you will find a solution quickly. VIRGO
You might think things have been settled between you and another person, but you will find out the misunderstanding continues. Keep working at it and the record will be set straight once and for all. LIBRA

You are slightly preoccupied by your health, which you usually take very good care of. Don’t hesitate to take action and find some effective remedies or treatments. SCORPIO
You find yourself at the center of attention, even though you don’t usually enjoy that. Keep in mind that the love and admiration you receive is great for your self-esteem. HOW TO PLAY: SAGITTARIUS
Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.
Work on creating or improving a space at home where you can get your work done efficiently. You might also be thinking about starting a family business at home, since you have been feeling creative lately. CAPRICORN
You will be doing a lot of moving around this week, so make sure your car is in good condition. Express yourself as clearly as possible to make sure others understand you. AQUARIUS
You will have some unexpected payments to make. On a more positive note, you are getting closer to your goal of buying a property that will fill all of your family’s wants and needs. PISCES
This week is filled with unexpected surprises of all kinds, as people around you keep changing their minds. Thankfully you find it easy to adapt and go with the flow.

IF YOU DIDN’T READ THIS WEDNESDAY’S
Good things come in small packages By Lorie Chortyk Last year, a friend “gifted” me a furry little hamster that her downstairs tenants had left behind when they moved. While I wasn’t really looking to add to my menagerie of pets, Homer was clearly in need of a new guardian and he now happily makes his home in a spacious aquarium in my office at the BC SPCA. Like Homer, hundreds of hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and other small animals are surrendered to the SPCA and are in need of loving homes. Each year the BC SPCA designates March as Small Animal Month to draw attention to these wonderful pintsized pets available for adoption at shelters across B.C.
Small animals are often overlooked, perhaps because people don’t see them as “real” pets. However, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats and hamsters come with delightful and inquisitive personalities, fascinating behaviour and the ability to enrich our lives. While Homer ’s nocturnal habits make him a quiet and unassuming office-mate, he regularly rouses himself from sleep to greet colleagues or visitors who pop by – in the hopes they may have brought along a hamster treat or two. Small animals are great for people who have pet restrictions where they live. They don’t take up a lot of space or make much noise. But small animals do have unique
care needs and, as with cats and dogs, people should familiarize themselves with the animal’s characteristics to ensure a suitable match. So, before you head out to a BC
SPCA shelter to adopt, check out our pet care pages first to learn what you need to do to keep your potential pet happy and healthy. Then, should you feel ready to bring a small ani-
mal (or two) into your life, check our adoption listings (www. spca.bc.ca) or stop by a shelter to find one just right for you. Lorie Chortyk is the BC SPCA community relations general manager.
