Submitted In 2010, Tembec Industries launched a Safety Recognition Program to promote safety awareness with the goal of injury reduction for its workforce across Canada. The Canal Flats Sawmill Operation, through a strong and concerted focus on injury prevention through risk identi¿cation, achieved a remarkable accomplishment by reducing the numbers of employees injured on the job signi¿cantly from the previous year. Canal Flat’s ultimate goal is to reach a goal of zero injuries. In recognition of the reduction of injuries to workers, Tembec made a monetary contribution to a Health & Safety Fund based on its number of employees.

The Canal Flats Health & Safety Committee was given the task to poll the employees and allocate where the funds would be disbursed. Suggestions offered included a donation to worthy causes and it was unanimously agreed to donate the funds to East Kootenay Foundation for Health and it’s A Clear View – digital mammography campaign. The Canal Flats Sawmill operation employees ultimately donated $7,500 this cause. Somewhat of a surprise for the Health & Safety Committee was when Donna Grainger and Brian Clifford of EKFH decided to come the Canal Flats Sawmill Operation to accept the generous gift. “It’s really important for us to show our appreciation

to our donors no matter which part of the East Kootenay they live in. I was so inspired by this group and for what

it means for them to choose something that not only affects their own health and safety but the tremendous contribution

By Annalee Grant After a turbulent and convoluted two decades, the proponents of a proposed yearround ski resort in the Purcells Âżnally got the government go-ahead to pursue their project. The B.C. government announced in Victoria Tuesday afternoon that it had signed the master development agreement for the Jumbo Glacier Resort earlier

in the morning. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett joined Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson to make the announcement at a press conference in the provincial capital. “The approval of the Master Development Agreement allows the project to proceed, Thomson said adding that the agreement needed a decision after

22 years. “I recognize and respect that there are differing views, he said. “After more than 20 years, it’s time for a decision. With the approval of the agreement, the proponents, Glacier Resorts Limited, will have to follow through on 195 commitments under a Environmental Assessment Act review (from 2005), and there will be further permits to be applied for. Thomson said there had been much consultation with the local Ktunaxa, and they have been fully informed on

the process. “We made sure the Ktunaxa had the Âżnal package on which the decision would be made,â€? he said. “We’ve reached out to them and told them we want to continue to keep the lines of communication open.â€? Bennett spoke to the ongoing process as well, saying he became interested in the project around the 2005 election. “It’s been a long road,â€? he said. 3 Facts You Need To Know About... Changes to DriveABLE 1.

Only 2% of all BC Seniors will ever have to take the DriveABLE assessment. If your doctor says you must take a DriveABLE cognitive assessment, you will now be able to do it closer to home, here in Cranbrook. I’ve been asking for this change and I commend Minister Bond for agreeing to make this improvement for seniors in the East Kootenay.

2.

I also understand how some seniors feel about computers! I know this method of testing is causing anxiety. Minister Bond has found a way to offer a second chance. People who fail the onscreen assessment will get a second chance with an on-road evaluation. The province will pay for the cost of both assessments.

3.

I understand this has been a difficult experience for some seniors and I hope these changes will make the DriveABLE experience easier. I encourage you to contact me if you any questions about DriveABLE or any other government matter. I’m here to help. Bill Bennett, MLA.

This festival consists of short and feature length ¿lms produced by professional and amateur ¿lmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of Ày ¿shing. From trout in British Columbia to giant pike in Alaska, the variety of ¿lms at this event are sure to peak the interest of all anglers. While the IF4 is certainly a popular event, it isn’t the only thing the Rocky Mountain Fly Fishers are up to. On March 31 and April 1, the club is hosting a display at the Tamarack Mall and on April 14 it will be helping at the Fish Hatchery’s open house. The display at the Tamarack Mall, the hatchery open house and the ¿lm festival are all part of getting the club’s message out. “I joined to learn more about Ày ¿shing, where to go, what to use, and it turned out to be very educational, but a lot of fun at the same time. Now I have a whole list of buddies I can call up to go ¿shing too,” said Marko. “We have the best population of wild westslope cutthroat trout in North America up here. We have some of the best Ày ¿shing streams around, unspoiled waters and scenery. Even if you don’t catch a ¿sh, you will see eagles, wildlife and amazing scenery. We live in the best part of the country.” Film Festival tickets can be purchased in advance through the IF4 Online Box Of¿ce at www.Ày¿lmfest. com and are also available through the Rocky Mountain Fly Fishers Club and Mountain Man Outdoors. Call 250-489-5856 or email rmflyfishers@gmail. com for more information about the club or to buy tickets for the festival.

BCTF elections brings familiar faces

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Cranbrook’s Wendy Turner was elected as a member-at-large for the BCTF Executive Committee. Burnaby teacher Susan Lambert has been re-elected for a third one-year term as president of the BC Teachers’ Federation. In addition, First Vice-President Jim Iker from Burns Lake and Second VicePresident Glen Hansman from Vancouver Elementary have also been re-elected to continue in their respective positions at the helm of the 41,000-member BCTF. Also elected to serve as members-at-large on the BCTF Executive Committee were: Denise Moffatt from Surrey, Joanna Larson from Prince Rupert, Mike Ball from Nanaimo, and Wendy Turner from Cran-

brook. They will serve along with the other currently-sitting members: David Komljenovic from Kamloops, Terri Mooring from Quesnel, Chris Stewart from Vancouver Secondary, and Paul Steer from Delta. Together, these executive members are charged with leading the 41,000 public school teachers of BC through the tumultuous days and months to come, during which teachers will work in a variety of ways to resist Bill 22 and all of its negative implications for teachers, students and public education itself. “Since 2001, this government has brought in 20 pieces of legislation on education, and each and every one of them has made conditions worse in our schools and classrooms,” Lambert said. “Bill 22, however, is by far the most punitive and potentially damaging. It further strips teachers’ collective bargaining rights – almost certainly in violation once again of the Charter of Rights. Even worse, it will further erode teaching conditions and learning opportunities for children across the province.”

Benefits of Birds, Bats and Butterflies Attracting winged creatures to your yard can be fun, functional, beneficial and add beauty to your yard. Who hasn’t stopped and admired a hummingbird feeding at a feeder, a butterfly flitting by a flower or a bird hanging out in a tree or a bat swooping in on insects and picking them out of the night air. At my house, it is almost a daily event, no matter the season, to watch the various winged wonders: from the nuthatches strolling down the tree head-first, stopping to pick at the bugs hiding in the bark, to the first hummingbird of the summer visiting the Monarda in the front yard to the butterflies flitting through the herb patch on the way to the lilies. Birds and other winged creatures are all attracted by the same things: water, food and shelter. They help out the gardener by feeding on insects, while creating a visual interest and being educational for children. Just as water is important to us to keep our bodies hydrated, it is the same for birds, bats, and butterflies. You can create a water oasis for them just by having a bird bath, a pond, pondless waterfall, or a large water tub in your yard. The key is to frequently change standing water so it does not become a mosquito breeding habitat or to have a pump to create moving water, and to keep it ice free in the cold winter months. Providing food and water for the winged creatures is easy and should be provided year round to keep your house on the foraging trail. If a feeder is hung out too late in the fall, the birds will have already established their path, so keep it filled all year long and you’ll see an increase in traffic. The high fats in sunflower seeds and nuts are very important to building up the birds’ layer of fat insulation. So in late summer, fill the feeder with sunflower seeds or Woodpecker, Nuthatch and Chickadee blend, which are both winter favorites in our area, and hang up a suet block. Hummingbirds can be attracted with a hummingbird feeder placed out early in the spring and filled with high quality nectar. The Hummingbirds are generally spotted early in May in our area, and will begin to leave for their winter hide out as early as August. They are here for such a short time span, but they are voracious eaters of the small flying insects, so it is worthwhile to attract them to your yard. If you notice numerous hummingbirds in your area, be sure to hang additional feeders as they won't wait in line for one feeder. As Hummingbirds are creatures of habit, they create a consistent path they follow year after year. Woody Trees and shrubs will provide a natural nesting spot for most birds. If your yard is lacking mature trees and shrubs hang up a few bird houses and a bat house in areas protected from predators. What you plant can attract different winged creatures to your yard. Some of the trees and shrubs that will attract birds are: Cedars and Junipers, Crabapples, Dogwoods, Grape and Honeysuckle vines, Virginia Creepers and Raspberries. A great way to attract bats to your yard is to plant flowers that release a scent at night that attract high flying insects that feed on nectar, such as moths. Some of these night scenting plants are: Sweet Rocket, Evening Scented Stocks, Evening Primrose, Nicotiana and Saponaria. Butterflies and Hummingbirds are attracted to plants such as: Rudbeckia, Goldenrod, Butterfly Bush and Butterfly Weed, Joe Pye Weed, Monarda, and Echinacea. These are just a few examples of what plants will attract which winged wonder. Stop in at Top Crop and our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you create a habitat so birds, bats, and butterflies can make themselves at home in your yard. It is a great trade off - feed the winged creatures and have fewer bugs bugging you in the garden. Till next time... happy gardening Submitted by Stacey

The three-day sold out performances at the annual Lilith Affair, an all women review, showcased some very talented singers and dancers but the even bigger highlight of the event is the impact all those involved are making for the journey of many breast cancer patients. So the next time you see the ladies of Steppin’ Out Dancer kicking up their heels applaud a bit louder because you just don’t know what wonders they will create next.

RCMP investigate house fire On March 12, 2012 at 5:50 a.m., the Golden R.C.M.P., and the Nicholson Fire Department responded to a residential structure Âżre at 1539 Campbell Road in Nicholson. The Âżre was fully involved upon their arrival, and the residence could not be saved. On March 16, 2012, a person contacted the Golden/ Field R.C.M.P. and provided information which identiÂżed a suspect. Golden/ Field RCMP investigators interviewed other individuals who surfaced in the course of the ensuing investigation and identiÂżed two additional suspects. According to the information gleaned from the investigation to date, the owners of the residence have been absent since the middle of February. In their absence, the suspects broke into the residence repeatedly to party, cause malicious damage and steal property. On March 11, 2012, two of the suspects entered the residence and set Âżres within. They left when the smoke detectors activated, and the Âżre then progressed to the point it was noticed by neighbours who contacted the Fire Depart-

College of the Rockies has been an awesome place to begin my post-secondary education. It is especially great because of the small class sizes and one-on-one time with the instructors. The East Kootenay Scholastic Distinction Scholarship saved me thousands of dollars in tuition.

Everyone should apply for scholarships!
