PRINCE RUPERT - Ridley Terminals could be back on the market according to president and chief operating officer George Dorsey, who was speaking at a Platts Coal Properties and Investment Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 16 “The government understands the facility is, politically, becoming difficult,” Dorsey told those gathered at the conference. “There’s a variety of interests in Canada. But the value of the terminal has gone up rather substantially, so there’s a shrinking number of potential buyers.”

Dorsey said the terminal has $120 million of cash in the bank, and during a speech at the Vancouver Board of Trade on March 15 board chair Bud Smith outlined just how much the value of the terminal had changed since previous attempts to sell it. “Today Ridley’s enterprise value is not the $5 million it was to be sold for in 2005, but rather a projected $750 million at the 2012 year-end, and approaching $1.5 billion when our current expansion completes by 2015. At year-end 2012 that plus-$200 million accumulated deficit [at the end of 2006] will be gone, to be replaced by retained earnings...Our projected net profit for

the year ending December 2011, under new accounting rules, will be above $100 million,” he said. “By any measure, that is an extraordinary financial success story for taxpayers...Ridley has achieved that turnaround by requiring its users to pay full market price for service; provide minimum guaranteed throughput; and by preferring long term contracts to spot arrangements.” Talk of the sale also comes following an “asset review” conducted by the Government of Canada over a year ago that looks at whether or not crown corporations still perform a useful function, are still relevant to their original purpose and that they are

wise use of taxpayer dollars. MP Nathan Cullen also said it seemed speculative, but said making any movement on the matter at the subject wouldn’t make sense. “After putting so many millions into Ridley Terminals, why would you want to sell it when it is finally making money after so many years of not...We’ve seen a few iterations of wanting to sell Ridley. My worry is that it fits into the ideology of the current government to privatize everything and sell off crown corporations. I don’t want Ridley Terminals to fall victim to that.” With files from www.platts. com.

By Staff Reporter THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

NEW HAZELTON - During the week of March 12th to March 18th, the New Hazelton RCMP responded to 80 calls for service. Here’s a brief summary. On March 12, 2012 the New Hazelton RCMP stopped a vehicle for speeding as it passed through Gitsegukla on Hwy 16. The male driver was determined to not hold a valid driver’s license, and to be prohibited from driving. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver was issued a violation ticket for speeding. The male driver also now has an upcoming court date for driving while prohibited. On March 16, 2012 the New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of an intoxicated male on Hwy 62 near the Gitanmaax Food and Fuel. The male is currently on probation, including conditions to abstain from the consumption of alcohol. The male was arrested for breach of probation. Once sober, the male was released with an upcoming court date. CONTRIBUTED / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

Terrace tightens up its access policy TERRACE - If a wheelchair can’t get into a venue, the City of Terrace won’t host an event there – unless there’s an exceptional circumstance. This was made official by city council last week, when it revisited the issue for the third time since late 2011. It’s part of an accessibility policy created by the city, intended to acknowledge the importance of making sure people have access to places regardless of physical mobility. The policy, passed March 12, states the city will hold public city events and invitation only events “at venues that provide adequate accessibility for persons with physical disabilities.” A physical disability is described in the policy as any degree of physical impairment that limits a person’s mobility and therefore their ability to access venues without the use of a wheelchair or other mobility aids. Accessibility is defined as the removal of physical barriers that

prevent someone from entering a building without considerable assistance. Only if an event is not suited to a venue that is accessible will it be held elsewhere, reads the policy, and city staff will provide an explanation to council. Lastly, “notices of city events will provide information on the accessibility of the venue for persons with disabilities,” it reads. Council voted 5 -1 in favour of the policy, with Marylin Davies as the only councillor opposed. “I think that symbolically it’s very important,” she said. “(But) I’m not

sure that I think this is a good lead for council to take.” Davies said the policy lacked “teeth” and voiced concern that it sends the wrong message to the business community which has supported the city through tough economic time by paying taxes. “I can’t go there,” she said. And while councillor Bruce Bidgood voted in favour of the policy, he did express concern about making exceptions for certain events without council’s consent prior. “I’d hoped to see there’d be a rational,” he said.

“I don’t think council should be micromanaging,” responded councillor Brian Downie. Councillor James Cordeiro, who operates Blackstone’s restaurant in Thornhill in a building that is not wheelchair accessible, favoured the policy. “I would rather have an event at a venue that was accessible than carrying someone up my stairs,” he said, adding he has had personal experiences involving reduced physical mobility. “I would rather be discluded as a venue than discluded as a disabled person.” And according to

Cordeiro, sometimes business needs to be flexible to clients served. “That’s the cost of doing business if that’s the business you want to cater to,” he said about accessibility upgrade costs. The policy was first introduced after members of the Measuring Up Terrace Committee, a local committee focused on promoting accessibility, couldn’t attend the Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards Gala because there was no access to the banquet location downstairs at the Best Western Hotel.

Poll finds opposition to Enbridge pipeline By Malcolm Baxter THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - A new opinion poll commissioned by Skeena-Bulkley NDP MP Nathan Cullen shows more people oppose the Northern Gateway project than support it. The Mustel poll was based on 501 interviews completed by telephone (both land lines and cellular) between January 25 and February 8. It has a margin of error of +/-4.4 per cent. Those surveyed were first asked, “Have you read or heard anything about the proposal by Enbridge to build a pipeline that carries raw crude oil from Alberta to BC’s coast for shipment to Asian countries?” A total of 86.8 per cent said they had heard of the project, 13.2 per cent had not. The equivalent numbers for an Ipsos-Reid poll commissioned by Enbridge last December were 72 per cent and 25 per cent. Ipsos-Reid polled 1,000 BCers for a 3.3 per cent margin of error. The heightened awareness indicated by the Mustel survey is not surprising given the Joint Review Panel sessions on the project - particularly the January 10-11 one in Kitamaat Village - received blanket coverage in the media. The next question was, “Do you support or oppose the construction of such a pipeline?” Here the opponents outnumbered the supporters 46 per cent to 36.8 per cent, a reversal of the Ipsos-Reid poll which had 48 per cent supporting and 31 per cent opposing. Undecideds num-

bered 7.3 per cent (20 per cent Ipsos-Reid). “It appears that at the same time knowledge of the project is growing, so is opposition,” said Cullen. In the regional breakdown of the Mustel poll, the highest percentage opposed was on the South Coast/Vancouver Island (58.3 per cent) while the least opposition was in the Southern Interior (43 per cent). The North Coast/Interior result was 43.9 per cent opposed. The Southern Interior had the highest level of support (41.2 per cent) followed by the North Coast/Interior (39 per cent). The fourth question asked zeroed in on potential job creation by Northern Gateway. People were read the following statement: “Some people say that the Enbridge pipeline project will create many jobs, even after the peak construction years. Others say that most of the jobs are short-term and that in fact many longterm jobs will be lost because unrefined oil is being shipped to other countries.” Then were then asked, “Which view comes closest to your own?” The second part of the statement - most jobs will be short-term - rang true for 60.7 per cent of respondents versus 27.2 per cent with 12.1 per cent being don’t knows. Surprisingly, perhaps, Metro Vancouver scored highest in the ‘many jobs’ category at 29.8 per cent followed closely by the North Coast/Interior (28.9 per cent). The region that most agreed with the ‘few

jobs, lost jobs’ scenario was the South Coast/ Vancouver Island at 70.6 per cent. “People get that the project will not create permanent jobs,” said Cullen, adding, “We certainly want jobs in my riding, but people are not going to settle for short-term cash instead of long-term value-added jobs.” Northern Gateway’s communications manager Paul Stanway said the findings of the Mustel poll are so different from the Ipsos Reid because of the way questions were asked. “It seems to me that

the questions were quite pointed, which we tried not to do in the poll we did. We tried to present people with neutral questions, so that people weren’t influenced to answer one way or another,” he explained. As for the Northern Gateway Project only creating a minimal amount of longterm jobs, Stanway said he’s not sure where people are getting such low numbers from, estimating that 1,150 jobs would be created by the project - with half of that number being in BC - as well as potentially another 200 jobs in the ma-

rine operations of the project. Stanway added that once the Joint Reivew Panel process is over, people will be able to fairly make up their mind on the issue. Footnote: Eagleeyed readers will have spotted we went straight from question two to question four. That’s because Cullen’s office did not release question three, telling The Northern Connector that it was “for internal use only”. Requests made to Cullen’s office for an explanation for the missing question have so far gone unanswered.

Long-time drive thru shutting down

Malcolm Baxter

By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Port Edward and Prince Rupert are about to lose a much-loved local institution soon. Brad’s Drive-Thru is going to closing the nearly 50-year-old fast-food restaurant for good at the end of next month so that the owner, Phillip Wong, can have a much-deserved retirement. Brad’s was originally founded in the 1960’s by Gordon Bradbury – known to most as “Brad – who had come to Prince Rupert during his navy days before falling in love with the city and decided to stay. Brad had run a few restaurants when he lived in Vancouver and decided to open one in up here as well. The original Brad’s DriveThru was actually a small trailer parked at Rainbow Lake selling hamburgers to the workers who were building the highway at the time. Maybe it was the food or the lack of competition at the time, but according to Brad’s son, also named Gordon Bradbury, his father’s business was popular pretty much as soon as it started. “The hours were outrageous. Originally, they were open until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. It was ridiculous, says Bradbury. After the road construction was finished the restaurant changed places a few times including moving into the industrial site before Brad built it’s current location in Port Edward in 1967. Bradbury, who was barely a teenager at the time says that his father may have been forced outside

of Prince Rupert because of some conflict with the “City Fathers, but says that it could have just been a rumour going around town at the time. “So we ended up out in Port Ed because it wasn’t incorporated or anything back then, says Bradbury. Kicked out of town or not, Brad’s Drive-Thru was positioned right across the road from the pulp mill, the little burger joint became a popular lunch spot with the mill and cannery workers in Port Ed. While the restaurant is essentially a two-person operation now, Bradbury says that it used to be a popular place for teenagers to get a summer job. Bradbury himself

opened his own burger truck to go along with the business which lasted until Prince Rupert hit the slump that it is only now starting to crawl back out of. The Wongs have owned Brad’s since 1979 when Bradbury’s mother sold the business to them after his father died. The restaurant has remained popular destination for locals even after the cannery and pulp mill jobs disappeared from Port Edward. One customer said that he and his wife had been coming to Brad’s regularly since the 1970’s. Prince Rupert may be getting an A&W but it won’t be another Brad’s.

Warming device will save lives By Staff Writer THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Local search and rescue (SAR) members got the chance to use a new piece of equipment while on a call for help this winter. Terrace SAR used its new Personal Heatpac, nicknamed the “octopus,” to keep an injured snowmobiler warm so he could be taken to hospital after SAR was called by the RCMP at 2:40 p.m. Feb. 12. SAR was contacted after a distress call came in from a SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, said SAR president Dwayne Sheppard. “When we receive a call like this, we did not know if it was a medical emergency, mechanical breakdown or someone

buried in an avalanche,” said Sheppard. “When we respond to this type of call, we have to prepare for every scenario, this equates to a lot of safety and medical equipment,” he said. “By contacting the family, we can determine if the subject is skiing or snowmobiling but cannot determine the nature of any injuries.” The family of the snowmobiler sent a private helicopter to the scene and it was able to relay vital information that he had fractured his lower leg, said Sheppard. After receiving this information, Terrace SAR dispatched an additional helicopter with an avalanche technician and two SAR members to provide medical ser-

vices. “One of the primary pieces of medical equipment we carried was the new Personal Heatpac, recently purchased by the team with a private donation from a Terrace citizen. This was the perfect opportunity to test the new piece of equipment; this equipment was designed for

use in these types of rescue where the subject needs to be kept warm in a wilderness environment,” said Sheppard. BC Ambulance Service was also dispatched to the highway near the site to receive the subject once he was treated and ready to be transported by the helicopter. Once on scene, Ter-

race SAR treated the man’s injuries and with the aid of his friends, loaded him into the SAR helicopter (Lakelse Air). Due to limited landing zones near the highway, the SAR helicopter transported the injured snowmobiler directly to Terrace for medical treatment at Mills Memorial Hospital.

Foot patrols on HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY in Nass village WE ALL-NEW MAZDA CX-5 AND MAZDA3 WITH SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY By Margaret Speirs

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

GINGOLX - Residents of the Nass Valley village of Gingolx are taking more steps to rid the streets of bad influences with a community nighttime street patrol. “What they struggle with is, you know, public drunkenness, general disorderly anti-social behaviour,” said Sergeant Donovan Tait, the commander of the Lisims/Nass RCMP detachment. There are also problems with dogs running loose, barking and scaring children, said the sergeant. The idea behind the foot patrols is that people like to carry out their bad behaviour in public and the presence of a patrol can work by letting people know they’re being watched so they stop their bad behaviour or take it indoors, said Tait. “I’ve seen neighbourhoods in bigger places with moms and kids and dogs and grandmothers and babies in carriages walking in the street,” he said of the example of other foot patrols. The foot patrols follow up on the successful youth march against drug dealers and bootleggers that took place earlier this month in the village. Foot patrols started this past weekend on March 16 and are set to go from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through March 26. “I think another opportunity unique to aboriginal people is the cultural side. No matter how bad the bad guy or rubberhead, you respect the culture, you respect the elders before you do the police,” Tait said of the patrols. He said while the foot patrol members can call police, a community member or an elder if anything happens, likely their presence will be enough to deter anti-social behaviour. “For some of the stuff they may not need the police,” said Tait. “It’s not Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s anti-social behaviour youths shouldn’t be seeing.” Foot patrol organizer Abby Stewart, who is the Gingolx Village Government Social Development Administrator, really cares about the health and welfare of the community, said Tait. While the seven members of the Lisims/Nass RCMP detachment plan to accompany the foot patrol when possible, Tait stresses that the patrol is a communityled idea. “There was a problem out there, a significant problem that I think the community just needed support and just to bounce some ideas off another agency whether it’s us or [federal] fisheries so we said ‘these are the things that work in other places,” he said about how the police are helping the foot patrol get started.

Outage left hundreds in the dark By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - At 8:39 on the night of March 14 an underground cable leading to to a one of BC Hydro’s transformers failed and 343 customers lost their power including many homes, the hospital, a nursing home, a day care and a preschool. BC Hydro says that they have restored power to 300 customers shortly after the outage, but it wasn’t until about five p.m. the next day that power was totally restored. Hospital administration say that they only had to switch to

their back-up generators for a few hours last night before the power returned. The nursing home, Acropolis Manor remains on back-up power for the moment but the generators will last for as long as they need them. Parent’s still dropped off their small children at Light House Childcare despite their being no heat or power. So the daycare’s staff took the kids to play at the Friendship House and have lunch at Rupert Square Mall. Dave Mosure is a spokesman for BC Hydro. He says that sometimes underground power cables will fail and not much can be done to prevent it. The reason some cus-

tomers will be without power for nearly 20 hours is that repairing and replacing cables underground is a labour intensive process. “It just happens sometimes,” explains Mosure. “It’s unfortunate with underground lines, although they do suffer less outages, when they do go out, they take longer to repair . . . It’s not as bad as it could have been, we were lucky that it happened at a junction, but you still need to run new cable.” Of course it didn’t help that BC Hydro workers had to drive in from Terrace to do the work because none are stationed in Prince Rupert.

A&W is coming to Prince Rupert By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - While rumours have been circulating, A&W confirmed last week that the chain will be opening a new location in Prince Rupert. “We have been in conversation with the Rupert Square Mall for a number of months about putting a

free-standing restaurant with the mall, and I am pleased to say that we have reached a conditional agreement to do so. I say conditional because there are a number of conditions that we need to satisfy first,” said A&W spokesperson Patti Parente, noting that the restaurant will be located in the upper mall parking lot. “I would like to say that it

could potentially be complete in late 2012, but it could go on into 2013.” This will be the second time A&W had a location in Prince Rupert, with the previous one closing many years ago. “We’re looking forward to coming back to Prince Rupert and bringing the great taste of A&W to town,” said Parente.

STEWART - Stewart World Port has signed an exclusive lease agreement with the District of Stewart. On behalf of Council, Stewart Mayor Galina Durant is pleased to announce that Stewart World Port signs exclusive lease agreement with the District of Stewart. It was with much excitement in late February that Stewart World Port signed an exclusive agreement with the District of Stewart to lease the old Cassiar (Arrow) dock.

Stewart World Port intends to expand the existing facility and provide a multipurpose port capable of supporting barge access, mineral concentrate loading, RORO, and break bulk cargo. A feasibility study is now underway and is on schedule to be completed by the end of August this year. District of Stewart will benefit from the lease, taxes, and through-put fees. Expected investment is $50 million dollars. Stewart is ideally located at the end of the deep water Portland Canal and within one of the most mineral rich areas of North America.

MP says government is “gutting” environmental assessment By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Local MP Nathan Cullen is accusing the federal Conservatives of “gutting the environmental assessment process,” which he says is a Tory concession to Albertan Oil and Gas industry, to limit a project’s opponents ability to fight it at the regulatory level which is what is happening with the Enbridge Pipeline hearings. “The government has everything it is capable of to undermine this process, and this would absolutely kill any illusion in the public’s mind that this is a fair assessment,” says Cullen. Cullen’s remarks come in response to a parliamentary report that came out last week that6 contained 20 different recommendations for changes to how the Environmental Assessment Act could be “modernized.” The recommendations include allowing

Provincial environmental assessments to fulfill the requirement for a federal one, creating a list of projects that require a assessment instead of assuming they all do, giving more power to the Environment Minister to determine if a assessment is necessary and the imposition of “enforceable” time lines for assessments. While the recommendation is only for the assessments, the report floats the idea of imposing them on public participation and final approvals. This, says Cullen, gives a big advantage to companies who might be trying to get approval for a unpopular project. “The way they do this is make a deadline

on the process and if the company stalls and delays the government still has to issue the permit. So it’s actually to the company’s advantage to not come forward, have the conversations and bring the science to bear, and they’ll still get a decision,” says Cullen. While great emphasis is MP Nathan Cullen put on having “enforceable” time lines in the report, but focuses mostly on addressing the bureaucratic and governmental reasons for why assessments can become so drawn out. It doesn’t address Cullen’s hypothetical scenario of a company stalling because the committee says that companies are losing money the longer the assessments take, and just want them to be over with so they can move on to the next stage of the project.

“The government is cutting off its nose to spite its face.”

A smile helps foundation …

The report doesn’t really say what happens if an imposed time-line can’t be met, or if the government would be obligated to approve the project with an incomplete assessment. While the Conservatives are arguing that these steps will modernize the environmental assessment process, making it much more predictable, efficient and effective. But the government as opined in the past that the Enbridge Gateway Pipeline hearings have been hijacked by interest groups and “radicals,” and Cullen says this is a way for them to prevent a similar outcome when the next controversial project comes around. “The government is cutting off its nose to spite it’s face. We know the Conservatives don’t like environmental assessments, they don’t like the the ideas of them. But the factof-the-matter is that you have to understand the complexities of a project and what the impact might be,” says Cullen.

Sending welfare recipients here draws criticism by the NDP By Staff Writer THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A provincial Liberal plan to send welfare recipients up north to work makes no sense, says a member of the official NDP opposition. The province should instead focus on training people already living in the north, says Carole James, the NDP critic for social development. James was reacting to statements from provincial finance minister Kevin Falcon that his government is readying a program whereby southern welfare recipients would receive plane tickets and accommodation and training in the north. He said the plan is based on

the growing number of jobs coming open in the north thanks to large projects already underway or slated to start soon. “If the government does have the money for training, there’s plenty of people in the north, said James, adding that the aboriginal community would be a beneficiary of government programs. “What’s really needed is for people to access jobs where they are. There are people in the community already who need supports, James added. In any event, James said that while Falcon is talking about moving people north, a fellow cabinet minister is saying there is no money for a program of this kind. “I asked the minister, said James of social development min-

ister Stephanie Cadieux. “There is no money. There is no program. I’d be thrilled if this government would actually have a jobs strategy. As it is, the northwest has the highest unemployment rate of any region in BC, judging by the latest information published by Statistics Canada. According to Statistics Canada, the jobless rate as of February is 12.2 per cent, a clear jump over the 9.8 per cent in December 2011 and the 8.8 per cent for February 2011. The rate in the northeastern BC was 3.7 per cent in February, a large decline from the 9.1 per cent in February 2011. The provincial average in February 2012 was 7.1 per cent.

Government says employment to concentrate on locals ďŹ rst By Staff Reporter THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - A provincial plan to put welfare recipients to work in the northwest will first concentrate on people who live in the region, says the minister responsible for the project. And only when every attempt has been made to employ northwestern welfare recipients will the search expand to other areas of the province, says provincial jobs minister Pat Bell. Bell was clarifying comments by finance minister Kevin Falcon that the province was considering flying up

welfare recipients from the south for jobs in the north and provide them with accommodation and training. “There’s certainly the notion in the lower mainland that the north has got lots of economic potential, said Bell by way of explaining Falcon’s remarks. The prospect of BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line, mines, power projects, the rebuilding of Rio Tinto Alcan’s Kitimat aluminum smelter and liquefied natural gas plants has opened the possibility to the northwest having thousands of jobs available within a few years.

PAT BELL If anything, Bell said Falcon was indicating that unlike other periods in BC history, young people from the lower mainland aren’t as eager to come north to find

work. “I think what he was doing was sending a message, said Bell. He agreed that Falcon was acting as a parent would in speaking with a child. Bell wouldn’t go as far as to say he wants a new government jobs program, instead saying he wants his ministry to spend more time assisting individual welfare recipients or jobless people getting what they need in order to find work, “We spend $60 million a year on 100 different programs and many people fall through the cracks, said Bell. The effort should start soon.

Smithers Steelheads new Coy Cup champs By Allan Hewitson THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Five games in five nights proved one mountain too many for an injury-riddled Kitimat Ice Demons team which gave its fans something to cheer about by getting to the Coy Cup final and holding the strong Steelheads team to a 3-1 win. It was all the more exciting as Demons staged a late rally, down 3-0, in time to score a goal and storm the Steelies’ net for the final half of the third period. With the Smithers defensemen scrambling and the goalie showing why he was number one in the league this year, the Ice Demons came within inches of sending this game to O/T, but just didn’t have all the weapons they needed - including that extra burst of adrenaline - to achieve the onice target they had set for themselves when the tournament started. The jubilant Steelheads organization can take a bow for putting together a strong, freeflowing team with lots of fire-power, a team that was probably ready two years ago to challenge and couldn’t get past the reigning champs. So big congratulations to the Steelheads and a tip of the hat for their sportsmanlike demeanour throughout. Worthy winners in the best CIHL traditions. Still, the Demons may wonder what could have been with a fully-fit Craig Hewitson, Blaine Markwart, Chris Vilness and Rob Lafferty in the line-up throughout and the missing (injured) young guns like Jacob Pereira, Tyrone Thomson and DeLisser. And, bearing in mind this team had no competitive hockey for five weeks after an early bounce out of the playoffs, to see they could still persevere and make an impact in the tournament on guts, determination and skill is a testimony to their commitment to make it to the provincial final. But, that’s for another year. In this final game, Demons were visibly tired after four games in four nights, had many injuries, and fell behind to a withering

offence at the 18:54 mark of the first period on a goal by Matt Arnold, from wily veteran Stu Barnes. They were victimized also on the last shot of the period by Mitch Pedersen, which may or may not have gone in before the clock ran out. Refs consulted for a time before Eric Martens pointed to the face-off circle. Rob Millar was awarded an assist. It just clearly wasn’t to be the Demons’ game as they also took two of three pretty questionable penalties in what was essentially a good clean game, Smithers added the only goal of the second period at the nine minute mark to go ahead 3-0 and seemed to be cruising to a fairly easy victory as the Demons scrambled to put continuous pressure on Mike Wall, who was absorbing everything. Most of the excitement in the game was reserved for the final five minutes when the Ice Demons, clearly determined not to go down without a fight, came out of an early penalty kill and launched a more determined attack that had the Steelheads defense and goaltender working hard to preserve the lead. But they couldn’t buy a bounce until two minutes to go when Jeff Mildenberger, Wade Masch and Brent Mailloux combined for the nicest “east-west” passing goal of the night that saw Wall beaten by Mailloux’s accurate shot. Finding some new energy the Demons piled it on and with 1.02 left Brendan Hutchinson was forced to take a holding penalty and the wily pro Wall, who knows the rules pretty well, bought himself some breathing time but took a delay off the game penalty by removing his mask to get a whistle. A penalty shot was called on the same play but an exhausted Jeff Mildenberger had the shot slide off the stick, just wide of the top corner and the clock finally ticked down. BCAHA’s Mike Fraser and organizing committee chair, Wendy Kraft handed out silver medals to the Ice Demons, gold medals and winners’ hats to the jubilant Steelheads as well as the provincial championship banner and the coveted Coy Cup.

Former local hockey player shows his worth By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert Minor Hockey product Frank Slubowski continues to add to his accolades during his first year of play for the University of Western Michigan Broncos, taking home the Most Valuable Player award while helping lead his team through the playoffs to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship. Playing in the Joe Louis Arena against the rival University of Michigan Wolverines, Slubowski made 27 saves en-route to a 3-2 Broncos victory. “When you have a good goaltender you always have a chance to be a championship team. Bottom line is Frank gave us outstanding goalten-

ding,” said Broncos coach Andy Murray at the postgame press conference. It is only the second time the Broncos have won the Mason Cup as CCHA champions, the last being in 1986. The team will now enter the NCAA Tournament as the fourth seeded team in the country. They will face off with the University of North Dakota on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. pacific time, a game that will be shown live on www. ESPN3.com. The Broncos enter the NCAA Tournament on a five game winning streak and a six game unbeaten streak. As well as helping lead the team to the championship, Slubowski set a program record for goals against average and was a finalist for the CCHA Rookie of the Year.
